Worst Advice Givers In The Bible And What They Teach Us
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
We hang out, swap jokes, and then get serious about how advice can derail your life when it’s rooted in blame, impatience, or a need to be affirmed. We walk through several Bible stories that show what bad counsel sounds like and how we can learn to listen better, speak wiser, and trust God’s timing.
• upcoming volunteer needs and ways to serve at the park and Kids Jam
• a quick Bible-character survival draft and why certain traits matter
• Job’s friends blaming suffering on secret sin
• Sarah urging Abraham to force God’s promise and the cost of shortcuts
• Saul offering David armor that does not fit and the lesson of well-meant advice
• King Ahab surrounding himself with yes-men and ignoring truth
• Adam and Eve showing how “go along with it” can spiral fast
• Job’s wife telling him to give up and how despair warps counsel
• Rehoboam choosing friends over elders and the fallout of ignoring wise counsel
• practical discernment for what to take, what to leave, and when to just listen

SPEAKER_03Oh, we don't have to do the obstacle course though. All of the people are in the shade.
SPEAKER_02They do have every station has cover. Yep. Okay. So you will all be in the shade.
SPEAKER_00Okay. All the shade.
SPEAKER_03No stress.
SPEAKER_00No stress.
SPEAKER_02And chairs. And chairs. We all have chairs.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, so that's our big event coming up. We uh and there's all kinds, there's like some food trucks you can get stuff there too. There's it's a whole shindig at the park.
SPEAKER_02Usually usually I bring out the griddle and I'll you know heat up some hot dogs for our volunteers and stuff just to give them kick songs. That was nice.
SPEAKER_00Thank God I'm a country boy. Anyway, that's what I think of every time I hear griddle. No, you don't know that song?
SPEAKER_02I knew she didn't know that song. I lived in Florida my whole life.
SPEAKER_00That does not matter. People in Florida listen to country music too.
SPEAKER_02Ugh. I did not like that.
SPEAKER_00So depressing. Cakes on the griddle.
SPEAKER_02Who wants to listen to music about ripping up people's cars and waiting my ex-boyfriend and what? I'm like, no, this is all horrible music.
SPEAKER_00It's all real life stuff. It's stories.
SPEAKER_03All country music? Yes.
SPEAKER_00It's stories. People love stories.
SPEAKER_03What other music is there? Worship.
SPEAKER_00Go listen to Billy Ray Cyrus. Icky Bricky Heart. That's what I grew up on.
SPEAKER_02Christian rap? Like, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_02Skillet.
SPEAKER_00Did not expect us to start out with dissing country music.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, this is a rough morning.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Oh.
SPEAKER_03Wow. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Volunteer sign up for Kids Jam. We have the booth out there if you want to volunteer for Kids Jam. Good times. We need lots of volunteers. We have lots of kids with different areas you can do. You can lead kids around in groups. You can volunteer to help in specific areas. Check the signups. Or no. You know, you just get to pick what you want to sign up for. Pick two. Yes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And just so you're aware, also, on June 28th, we will have a quick lead, a quick meeting right after second service for volunteers. So if you have any questions during that time, that's you know, we kind of explain what's going on, how the flow happens, you know, all that stuff. We can answer all of your questions during that meeting. And if you can't go to that meeting, just email me and let me know what you've got questions about. I've already had some people come up to me and say, Hey, can I have my kid with me? And like, of course, like it's you know, whatever.
SPEAKER_00Yep, we'll answer all your questions.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You even show up during the week here at the office and we'll talk to you and hang out with you. That'd be fun. Make you a coffee. Maybe Brittany won't be here, but me and Ashley usually are.
SPEAKER_01Rude.
SPEAKER_00Well, you only do Thursday, Fridays. Well, Tuesdays, you hear, but Sundays. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_03So I guess I'm here.
SPEAKER_02So three of the three out of seven, she's not here.
SPEAKER_00Oh. I'm here every day.
SPEAKER_02I know. We're like six out of seven.
SPEAKER_00No, I'm seven. What? I come here to take care of my bearded dragon on Saturdays. He's a nice guy. I have a bearded dragon named Barnabas Beardface. He lives in my office, in case you didn't know. He's cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Ashley doesn't like him. She thinks he's gross, but he's not.
SPEAKER_02Even just thinking about it.
SPEAKER_00He likes blueberries, he eats worms and lettuce, and he's cool.
SPEAKER_03I like when I walk into your guys' office and I can hear Beardface moving around, and I'm like, hey, Cody. I'm like, Cody. That's just beardface. That's not, he's not here.
SPEAKER_00Barnabas beardface. Anyway, why did I bring him up? I don't know what I'm talking about now.
SPEAKER_03I'm here on Saturday. Oh yeah, yeah. I'm here every day.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I came in one Saturday morning to feed him and turn his light on, and the power was out at the church. Yeah, you figured that out. I was like, guys, something's wrong. Anyway, announcements. Anything else I'm missing? If you want to know anything else, ask Brittany. Email her. She'll tell you all the announcements. Or check your bulletins. Or watch the screen before his services and it has announcement slides. All the good stuff.
Dad Jokes And Bible Wordplay
SPEAKER_00So do you got any jokes for us this morning?
SPEAKER_02Well, no.
SPEAKER_00I didn't.
SPEAKER_02However, my son gave me two jokes, and I'm gonna use them. They're horrible, but you know what? For him throwing Carter under the bus. Throwing Carter under the bus. Okay, first joke of the morning from Carter is why did the chicken cross the playground?
SPEAKER_00Get to the slide.
SPEAKER_02Get to the other slide. Nice. I was like, Carter, that's horrible. It's fine. Okay. Less next one.
SPEAKER_00Somebody just laughed just now. I guarantee it. Somebody listening is like, ah, ah, that's good.
SPEAKER_02What mall does Darth Vader shop at?
SPEAKER_03I'm only laughing because again, Ashley has a question mark at the end of this channel.
SPEAKER_00The Sith store?
SPEAKER_02Because I don't watch Star Wars. Apparently, the Darth Maul. Is there a character called Darth Maul?
SPEAKER_00That was a good one. I like that one.
SPEAKER_02He said Cody would like that one.
SPEAKER_00That was good. I was trying to think of where that was gonna go. Darth Maul. Anyway. Darth Maul was a could have been a cool character in Star Wars, but he was only in the one where like he's got horns all over his head and he's got a black and red face paint. He looks really intimidating.
SPEAKER_02I think I've seen it in pictures.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, pictures. Yeah. Because if you watch the movie, he's only in it for a total of three minutes, I think. So anyway. Oh anyway, that's it.
SPEAKER_02That would be me. If I was a character, I'd be like, I would make it.
SPEAKER_00They were all excited. He's like one of the key things that you think of when you think of the first Star Wars movie, the prequels episode. Anyway, you don't know what I'm talking about, so it doesn't matter. Any more jokes?
SPEAKER_02Nope. That's it for the joke.
SPEAKER_00Oh, Timmy has a joke.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00A Bible joke that he likes to tell people. Who's the smartest guy in the whole Bible?
SPEAKER_02Oh, I know it, so I can't answer it.
SPEAKER_00Oh, did he already tell you?
SPEAKER_02No, because I've seen it when I've researched jokes.
SPEAKER_00Oh, the smartest guy in the whole Bible?
SPEAKER_03Is this supposed to be a joke? Yeah, it's a joke. Yeah. Oh, okay. Then I don't know.
SPEAKER_00It's Abraham. Because he knew a lot.
SPEAKER_01Nice.
SPEAKER_00There you go. And if you don't know, Lot is Abraham's nephew in the Bible. So just a little Bible joke there for you. Good, good job. Got any icebreakers?
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna
Drafting A Bible Survival Team
SPEAKER_02steal the one you said this morning. I thought it was really cool. Oh shoot. I should have been thinking of it. Yeah, so you you why don't you go ahead and say the biblical draft? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Building the ultimate ancient team.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00What did you want to do? Like a sports team or like a survival show?
SPEAKER_02Survival. Survival show. Survival.
SPEAKER_00So if you had to survive like a you know, survive a quest and and or like survivor, the TV show Survivor or something like that, you can you pick you draft three Bible characters to be on your team to help you win this contest or this survival thing. Three Bible characters, who would you pick? Well so you gotta think about it, you gotta have somebody like I don't know. Well, just think of some Bible characters. Who would you like to pick? John the Baptist. That's the first character that comes to your mind.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because he literally lived in the wilderness, right?
SPEAKER_00Oh well, yeah, it's he lived out in the wilderness. He ate bugs, okay, and he made clothes from camel hair.
SPEAKER_03So he's like He's already pretty survival.
SPEAKER_00He's like, okay, I get that.
SPEAKER_03That's the first one that pops into my head.
SPEAKER_00Ashley, did you have anybody pop into your head?
SPEAKER_02For me, the first one was Samson.
SPEAKER_00That's me too. Samson.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, how strong he is. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You gotta have somebody that can just barrel through anything. Do something strong.
SPEAKER_02You know, use pick up that tree in front of me so I can get across the like a work mule.
SPEAKER_03Got it.
SPEAKER_00I'm on the same page. That's where I went too. Like I just picture a tree. Like doing stuff, I don't know. Like chopping wood with his hands.
SPEAKER_03Right. Build me a fire with your breath. What?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I could do the buttons.
SPEAKER_03You could explain that.
SPEAKER_00All right. All right.
SPEAKER_02Biblically, it's not correct. I get that.
SPEAKER_00He's not a dragon. He's just a guy. I don't want to do that. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Please explain.
SPEAKER_03Please explain.
SPEAKER_00That was weird. So Samson, John the Baptist, anybody else come to mind? I don't I'm trying to think about it.
SPEAKER_02Surviving. I was kind of thinking Peter. Like didn't he a lot of fishing, right? Wasn't he really good fishing? Fisherman. Fisherman.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he seems to be a leader kind of type guy. Take charge. Like he also just think about things sometimes. He'll just do it.
SPEAKER_03Just do it. That's I mean, if we're thinking of shelter, like building a shelter, Noah might come in handy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. He built a built a whole arch. Pretty good shelter for a lot of things. So he can build.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. So I'm trying to think if there's any women who like we would need on our team.
SPEAKER_00Grab that lady that put that tent peg together.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, don't we need like Deborah or Deborah? Deborah would be good. Somebody to protect us. Awesome. Forget Samson.
SPEAKER_00Let's pick a lady.
SPEAKER_03No, we want both of them.
SPEAKER_00What about Moses? He led a group of a million people through the wilderness.
SPEAKER_02That's yeah. They were lost quite a bit though.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's their own fault. Moses is like, guys, guys, give him a good group of people though. He can if he can do it with that.
SPEAKER_02Give him us three, and he'll be we'll get right through it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I like how we're like although we can't we would definitely be better.
SPEAKER_00He gets kind of he gets kind of frustrated sometimes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he's kind of a hothead.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he can be a hothead. So we got Moses, John the Baptist, Peter, some woman that we might pick. Okay, Deborah. Yeah, the temp peg lady is cool. Tempeg lady. I forget her name. Starts with a J. Ah. Oh well. It escapes me. Is it Jimmy? In the book of Judges. No, it's like JL or JL, I think, maybe. Something like that. There you go. You know who we don't want on our team? Jonah. Will abandon us and leave. What do you think? Judas, right?
SPEAKER_02He would betray us. He would go for the other team. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And David? No one picked David.
SPEAKER_02Oh. Well, yeah. Who who Jonathan.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you were a Janet.
SPEAKER_02You've just been learning about him. Yeah. He's like loyal and he's not gonna betray you. Nothing is said wrong about him. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's true. There you go. Jonathan would be good. So those are kind of some people that we thought of. I don't think I can't think of anybody else. I'm sure there's good people.
SPEAKER_02I'm sure there's lots of good people.
SPEAKER_00Well, Solomon, he's really wise. He'd make good choices. But he's a big three, so I don't know. Thought that was a good choice.
SPEAKER_02Those are good choices. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00There you go.
SPEAKER_02Who would you choose? Let us know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Tell us in the comments or Angel, I want to know. What does that mean?
SPEAKER_03She's talking to Angel Pain.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_03I know one person who listens to this podcast.
SPEAKER_00I was like, why is she talking to angels? I don't know what's happening right now.
SPEAKER_03Angels? Tell me.
SPEAKER_00I was a little I was like, what is happening? Okay. Angel. We know an angel. Anyway. She's named Angel.
SPEAKER_02It's fine. It's still early. Drink some more coffee. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh boy. All right. Let me
Setting Up The Bad Advice List
SPEAKER_00drink my coffee and we'll get into a little bit of this is kind of offhand podcast where we just kind of picked a topic to kind of talk about this morning. We're going to get into another series. Hopefully pretty soon we'll get a more consistent thing where you will tell you what's coming up. But for this one today, I thought it would be kind of cool just to kind of look at the worst advice givers in the Bible. Um like some people that you know just gave some not so great advice and and maybe we can help correct them. What should they have done differently? What do you think?
SPEAKER_03Anyone before I I mean we talked about a few already, but like Yeah, I don't think that we can do it this way, can we?
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_03Or do you want to?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. Just pick one. Alright. So the
Job’s Friends And Blame Talk
SPEAKER_00first kind of on my list of worst advice givers in the Bible. First, I had the story of Job. Job's life kind of takes a terrible turn. He loses a lot. He's been, you know, just being tested, and things are happening to him in the story. And his friends show up in the middle of it, and they just they're he's he's like, Why is all this stuff happening to me? There's gotta be a reason. And his friends come up and they're like, Well, the reason is you're a terrible person. You must have some kind of deep sin in your life, unless you're hiding from us. They're like, Tell us, Job, what have you done? What's your sin? He's like, I'm a righteous guy, I haven't done anything. And they just keep there's three of them, and they're just like berating him. They're like, You must have done something. Tell us what it is. And like the whole idea behind it is, you know, no, Job's a righteous guy. Sometimes bad things just happen in life. Sometimes we have to deal with challenges and struggles, and it's not God's not punishing people for for their sins. I mean, there's consequences to sins, there's things that you have to deal with on your own that you may you do something, there's consequences. But it's in Job's case, he didn't do anything, and all this stuff's happening to him. His friends are like, Well, you must be a terrible person, you must be it's all your fault. God must not like it. And sometimes life just happens and it's nobody's fault, and it's just we live in a fallen world and it's broken, and that's kind of what is his friends miss that idea. They're like, Oh, you must have done something terrible.
SPEAKER_03So I feel like that's kind of a common theme. Like I've heard not just with Job, but more stories that I've read that's like it's just assumed that if you're doing some or you have some kind of ailment or something terrible in your life, that you're just a sinful person. Right.
SPEAKER_00That was kind of commonplace though, like in ancient times and things like all the gods or the divines punishing you because you haven't lived the right way or whatever, right? And all these different things. And so it it that that's true to an extent of like God gives us things to do, like gives us a way to live, and if we don't do that, then there's you know consequences that you deal with and stuff, but it's not direct because of you're a bad person, kind of like yeah, and so Job's friends come in, they give him advice, and they're like, You suck. And he's like, I haven't done anything, I promise. And so that's the thing I thought of.
SPEAKER_02I imagine that's exactly how we act. Yeah, he's like, Oh wrong.
SPEAKER_00Sorry, that's my I don't know why I gave Job this voice of um it's fine.
SPEAKER_03It's not how I believe it. You gotta believe me.
SPEAKER_00Um sorry, he's like a Muppet. Let's see. The next one I had on my list of terrible advice givers. We go back
Sarah’s Shortcut And Impatience
SPEAKER_00to Abraham and Sarah in the book of Genesis. Oh, yeah. God makes a promise to Abraham and Sarah and says, You're gonna have a son, and he's gonna be like, you know, carry on this promise that I gave you of you will bless the entire world through your line. And Abraham's like, sweet, except, you know, Sarah's really old. And she laughs and she's like, that's not gonna happen. So and it goes to this whole thing, and so eventually we get to the point where like it hasn't happened yet, and Sarah comes up with this brilliant idea. She gives advice to Abraham and she's like, Why don't you sleep with my servant girl over here, Hagar, and she'll give us a baby? And Abraham's like, All right, I'll do that. It's a great idea. Should have said no. He should have said no. Sarah suggested Abraham sleep with Hagar to speed up God's timeline. So it was this idea of that's not very good advice.
SPEAKER_02No, that's a horrible advice.
SPEAKER_00When you know, God wants us to be patient, it's one of the fruits of the spirit. We need to work on patience, we need to work on, you know, trusting him, knowing that like if we ask for something or we think something should happen, sometimes it's not what God wants, and you have to deal with it.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00And you can't work around it in your own way.
SPEAKER_02It's not in our timing, it's in his timing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and sometimes he's like, no, that's not what you need. And we're like, I want it. And in this case, it was just not being patient enough, not trusting God gonna do what he said he was gonna do. And Sarah's like, I know how to fix this. We're gonna get a baby, one way or the other.
SPEAKER_03So right, and then she's mad. That's the other part.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then they and then you know it happens. I wonder why, and then she gets angry and she's like showing bitterness towards Hagar, and it's like it was your idea. Right. Right. So, this is you know, some of the bad advice that we see in scripture. That's pretty good. Let's see, some other silly ones that I have written down.
Saul’s Armor And Well-Meant Advice
SPEAKER_00We just did this one, the story of David and Goliath. Before David goes out to fight Goliath, Saul insists that David wear his armor. Saul's like, Here, yeah, I'm the king, I'm the one of the tallest Israelites around. I'm this huge guy. And he's like, Hey, teenage David, come over here. Yeah, take this armor to fight, you're gonna need it. And David puts it on, it's like he's like swimming in it, and he's like, I can't fight in this.
SPEAKER_03Um, every time we talk about this story, I think about little giants. Little giants, I think the kid with the bubble wrap all over him.
SPEAKER_02He's like, I can't see what this thing on. Uh you know what little giants is. That football movie, right? Ashley, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yes, it's she knows. It's a classic. I am I was getting there. She's trying to remember it.
SPEAKER_00She's trying to remember. She knows what we're talking about.
SPEAKER_03Well, now I do you know the scene? I think so. Okay, I'm gonna go. It's been a long time since I've seen it. I don't know either. I when you see it, trust me, that's all you're gonna think about now. Not that like David was like this little boy.
SPEAKER_00Saul insists that David wears massive, heavy royal armor, he puts it on, realizes he can't even move or walk around in it, and says, Yeah, I can't do this. So that was Saul's like, probably like, yeah, that wasn't a good idea.
SPEAKER_02So at least he came to the realization that it wasn't a good idea, though.
SPEAKER_00He's clanking around this armor, and so but like that's a good like that that that's a good lesson to like look at and be like, some people's advice is really well-meaning, like they mean it in a a good way. They're like, here, this take this, this'll help. And it's like, step back and think about it, and then be like, is this really good advice, or is this really what they need to hear right now? And so Saul's probably thinking, like, trying to help this guy out. It's well-intended advice, it's just not good. Yeah, and so you ever had that before where somebody gives you advice and you're like, I think they mean well, but that's not very good advice.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. Yeah all the time.
SPEAKER_00All the time.
SPEAKER_03I hope that I'm not.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I've done it before too.
SPEAKER_03Like, I'll look back and be like, I hope that I'm not on the other end, but I probably haven't. Oh, I'm sure we haven't.
SPEAKER_00I look back and be like, you know, I probably should have just said that a different way, or maybe waited to give that advice for that thing. But so, but yeah, in that shit gets good, good to keep in your mind when you're giving advice, be like, is this the right time for this? Do they need this right now? Is this the best way to put it kind of way? I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Kind of like Saul and David hearing this story. Let's see, what else do I have in here? King Ahab
Ahab’s Yes-Men And Real Consequences
SPEAKER_00wants to go to war, so he gathers 400 his personal court prophets and says, Should I go? They all chant in unison, go, God will give it to you. One get one guy uh even makes literal iron horns and prances around saying, With these you will gore the enemy. The one lone prophet who told the truth warned him it was a trap. Ahab ignored him, went away, and died. So this is the idea he surrounded himself with a bunch of people that he knew were gonna tell him Yes men. Yes men. Yeah. They were a bunch of yes men, so he made sure that he had people around him. He's like, Should we go to war, fellas? And he really wants to go to war. And they're all like, Yeah, let's do it. And one guy was like, It's a trap. It's not a good idea.
SPEAKER_03That's not funny.
SPEAKER_00No, it is. I mean, it's like that's why we're doing this. These are kind of, you know, they can be comical, but they're also, you know, practical. We can take these and be like, oh. Oh. That gives us advice on how to give advice, I guess, or how to listen to advice. Don't surround yourself with a bunch of people that just always think you're correct. Like some people like to have all the people around them be like, I have successfully done that. Good job, Brittany. No one tells Brittany no. Brittany just does what she wants. She's like, guys, is this good? We're all like, it's good, bro.
SPEAKER_03I've successfully done the other way that everyone's like, that's a bad idea. Yeah. Oh man.
SPEAKER_00But yeah. What was I talking about? Shoot. Anyway, he surrounded himself with yes people, and and you know, if you do that, you're gonna make bad choices. This one ended up, he's he he died. But I can't the one guy's probably like, told you.
SPEAKER_03Right?
SPEAKER_00Should have listened to me. And there's always, you know, I've been that person where I'm like, no, you you should probably not do that. And everybody else is like, it's great. And you're like, ah, dang it. There they go.
SPEAKER_02I'm pretty sure I've been in that situation with you. Where I've been like, let's do this. You're like, no, probably not, and I still did it. And then Cody's like, yep, should have listened to me.
SPEAKER_03Nobody died though, so that's okay. That's true. If it was life or death, he probably would be more animated with it.
SPEAKER_00That's true.
SPEAKER_02Person who used to be in our lives is no longer here.
SPEAKER_00I just thought of another bad advice giver.
SPEAKER_03Yeah,
Adam And Eve’s Follow-The-Crowd Moment
SPEAKER_03okay.
SPEAKER_00I just all the way back at the beginning where Eve eats some fruit and she's like, here, husband, have some of this. And he's like, Okie dokie.
SPEAKER_02Right? I'll listen to you because you know what you're talking about.
SPEAKER_00This will be good for you. Now eat it. Just because you're closest people in your life think something's a good idea, doesn't mean you have to follow along.
SPEAKER_02And you know, with that too, like I always think, would we have made the better decision? Like, I like in that situation, like right now, like I'm thinking, why are you guys like that? I would have done something so much more different, but then really, like, if that were us, were we would we have made the better decision?
SPEAKER_00No.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00Think of like right now, do you always do what God tells you to do?
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00Oh no. We would you know that was the whole point of the Adam and Eve thing, is they they were with God, they had him, and they decided to rebel and make their own decisions for themselves, and we do that all the time.
SPEAKER_02But if they knew that for all humanity would would fall because of that one decision, maybe they wouldn't have believed it.
SPEAKER_03True.
SPEAKER_00They wouldn't have believed it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. They probably I mean, you can talk yourself out of any consequences.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it'll be fine.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Especially when you have a all of humanity.
SPEAKER_03That sounds dramatic. Probably wouldn't happen. They're probably just saying that. Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_00But we do do that all the time.
SPEAKER_03We're like, it can't be that bad.
SPEAKER_02It can't really affect that many people.
SPEAKER_00It can't really affect that many people.
SPEAKER_03It's one piece of food. What's it?
SPEAKER_00Let's see. Oh, Job's wife.
Job’s Wife And Dark Despair Advice
SPEAKER_00We go back to Job first. Well, his friends and his wife, they're all just poor Job.
SPEAKER_03Like, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But he doesn't give in, though. He like ignores their advice, really. So like he did a good job of hearing advice and being like, nah, that's not that's not it. And so sometimes we have to be able to take in advice and be like, oh, thank you. But no, right, not gonna do that. And she was what what did she say? Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die, she said. So she's like, just give up. It's too bad. Everything's just too terrible. You should just give up your faith, curse God, be done with him, and then go and die somewhere.
SPEAKER_02That's so sad. It is really sad. Like, I can't even imagine saying that to my husband. Like, never.
SPEAKER_03Well, it was a pretty dramatic scene, I think.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Job had lost all his wealth, lost his children. He's got boils, and he's really sick, and he's like all of his everything they had together was completely gone. So he's sitting in a pile of ashes, scraping his sores with broken pottery. His wife comes out, looks at him, and goes, You're so you're so pitiful. She's yeah, but it's still not very good advice.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it yeah.
SPEAKER_03Not to say maybe I should clarify. Just because it was a dramatic scene doesn't mean that I would talk to my husband.
SPEAKER_02I'm still thinking, I'm like, it doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_00Brittany said you're trying to defend Job's wife. She's like, Well, you know.
SPEAKER_02I'm like, I'm gonna stand by his side.
SPEAKER_03I'm not defending Joyce. I'm just saying. Yeah, I'm trying to put myself in her mind.
SPEAKER_00It's like you have to feel for her because she lost everything, too. Um the sheer bluntness of her solution and advice, though, just to give up and kick the bucket is kind of like startingly, it's kind of dark, but it also makes me laugh when she says that. I don't know why. Right. Um it's you know, contrast perfectly with Job's friends, and she just dropped one sentence.
SPEAKER_02Horrible advice.
SPEAKER_00So that's all I have in my notes on bad advice givers. So there's probably many more if you have any bad advice givers. You know.
SPEAKER_03No, I'm trying to s in my mind trying to think of more.
SPEAKER_00But I'm trying to think if there's any more I can't off the top of my head though.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I think of things that even people like like you said have said to us, you know, or or in my own personal life, you know, advice or even just like I can see you doing this. And I you just have to discern. Like, that's great that you can see that God hasn't told me that, so I'll keep following. Yeah, that's what he has me on.
SPEAKER_03That's a thing that I think takes a while to learn.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That any kind of plan or advice, God was probably gonna come and tell you. Right, right.
SPEAKER_01So you can be sure on that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
Rehoboam Chooses Friends Over Elders
SPEAKER_00And it's just the the one other thing I had put down was Raya Bohm was a king and he rejected the advice of his elders of his council that he had built around him. And like they were just like the royal court, I guess you'd call them. They were like seen things, they'd been around for a while in the in the palace and stuff.
SPEAKER_02Is he the one who followed a witch or something?
SPEAKER_00No. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I don't remember the name of it. I thought it was something with an R.
SPEAKER_00All the witch of indoor?
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's not the same character here.
SPEAKER_00I think that it was Saul who did that, so Okay. Like he wanted to see, he wanted to he got so far from God and he went to the like even his own rules, like, don't talk to those kind of people. Right. And it says he was like, he's so desperate and he's so detached from everything. Like he and it's and Samuel's dead, and so he goes and he's like, bring me Samuel's ghost, and like it's a whole story. Yeah. We can talk about that sometime, but like we're gonna read about that soon, right?
SPEAKER_02All right, I mixed up your I mixed up stories.
SPEAKER_00This guy was just a king, and he was, you know, he had anyway, he rejected the advice of his counsel and his elders, and he listened to friends of his youth, so people that he grew up with. It's more of those, you know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes it's good to listen to your friends, sometimes it's good. But when you have you and your buddies from college, and then you have these elder like this wise council of people that have been around the palace for a while and they've seen things, they know things, and he's like, Yeah, I think I'm gonna go with my friends on this one. And it didn't turn out very well. I would so do that. It instantly fracturing fractured the kingdom of Israel and like massive fallout.
SPEAKER_03Sorry about that.
SPEAKER_00Sorry,
How To Weigh Advice Wisely
SPEAKER_00but so like this whole thing that we it was kind of fun to do this one, but the idea is like people there's no shortage of people wanting to give you advice in life. Yeah, people want to speak into your life and tell you what you should do, where you should go, what you should be doing, kind of what you're doing wrong, or all these different things. People are giving you advice left and right, you have to be able to take it and be like, who do I listen to? Who do I not listen to? Who means well, and who's trying to sabotage me. And so, yeah, just when you take advice, when you hear people trying to tell you different things, their opinions, it's good. You can listen to them, but be careful what you take and use. And so I think that's good that good advice.
SPEAKER_02That's good advice. That is good advice.
SPEAKER_00I'm giving you good advice, you should listen to this. This is you know, but all those examples that we have, there's different ways of of giving advice, when to give advice. Sometimes it's just better to listen when somebody just needs somebody to you know listen to them talk about things. And for me, it's sometimes it's been hard because I like to like hear something and be like, Oh, I know what to do. I know how to feel and like just kind of then I stop listening, and then they don't they're not ready for the whole they just want to talk about it or whatever.
SPEAKER_03So I'm sure you get lots of practice with that with us.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Anyway, all right. Well, this was a fun one. I liked this episode. This will be good, and so this will come out while I'm still at paintball camp next week. But hopefully you guys have a good week. Oh, Ashley, you come with me too. So Brittany will be here holding down the fort.
SPEAKER_03I'll be here. All right. I'm only here four days a week.
SPEAKER_00Nice.
Prayer And Closing
SPEAKER_00Well, let's pray. Lord, thank you for this day. Thanks for this opportunity to talk and just hang out with each other, discuss things, help us this week because we go to paintball camp, pray for the students that can be there traveling, and and and that you show up and they they grow, they get to know you more, they find opportunities to uh serve you. And as we go through life, there's gonna be people that try to speak into our life, different things speak into our life, and help us to discern, you know, if it's you speaking to us and and what advice to take and what to leave. And even when we give advice, the right way to do that to those around us. So uh thank you for this opportunity. Pray for those listening, all the things that are going on in our lives. Uh in Jesus' name, we pray. Amen. All right, good job, everybody. We'll see you next time on Rush Hour.
