Holy Spirit, I Need You

Good morning, Mission Orlando Church

In this message, we discovered that the greatest obstacle to experiencing the Holy Spirit is not a lack of knowledge, it is a lack of spiritual hunger. Just as our bodies need food to survive, our souls desperately need the presence of God.

Through Psalm 42:1–2, we learned that the Holy Spirit is not a force or an emotion, He is a Person who guides us, strengthens us, transforms us, and walks with us every day. The Christian life was never meant to be lived in our own strength, but through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.

In this message we learned:

✨ We need to develop a genuine hunger for the presence of God.
✨ The Holy Spirit is a Person who desires to walk with us every day.
✨ Self-sufficiency is one of the greatest obstacles to spiritual growth.
✨ We should seek God's presence more than His blessings.
✨ Spiritual hunger grows as we intentionally pursue God.
✨ We must remove anything that dulls our appetite for His presence.
✨ God always responds to hearts that are hungry and thirsty for Him.

👉 The greatest prayer we can pray is not, "Lord, bless me." It is, "Holy Spirit, make me hungry for You again."

Because revival doesn't begin with better programs, it begins with people who recognize how deeply they need the presence of God.

Alright, today I want to speak about Holy Spirit. I need you. Holy Spirit, I need you. And um I remember in January that we had our 21 days of prayer and fasting. Me and my husband, we decided to do one meal a day. So, you know, with the first week it was a little tough. Then we got to Sunday, because we started on a Monday, we got to Sunday, and as I was coming on my way here, I was like, oh, I'm gonna be so good because we're gonna be in church, we're gonna be praying, we're gonna be worshiping. I'm not gonna be hungry at all. But guess what? I was so hungry that day, and it didn't even work being in church, but I was feeding my spirit, but after church, I was desperate to eat, right? I don't know if you've if you've ever fasted, and it comes to a point where you're desperate for food. I've also done the three-day three-day fast, just water, and I remember that second day. Amen. Anyone has done it? It's so hard at night, and I'm like, I'm desperate, I need to eat. But just how we're desperate for food when when we've taken a couple days without food, we need to be desperate for the Holy Spirit. Look at what Psalm 42:1 says. It says, as the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you. My God, my soul thirsts for you, the living God. So that's how desperate we need to be. As the deer longs, as the deer pants for the streams of water. That's how we need to be for the Holy Spirit. We need a desperation for the Holy Spirit. And if you look at the book of Acts, that's when when the first church started. You know, you you have the four gospels, and it ends with Jesus giving us the great commission to go and make disciples. Then he ascends into heaven, but he tells the church, wait for the Holy Spirit. So the church had to wait. I mean, the disciples, you know, the 120 in the upper room, and they had to wait for about 10 days. And Jesus said, Don't go and start preaching the gospel, don't go and start the church without the Holy Spirit, because you need him, you need his power. And look at what Acts 19 says. It says, While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, Do you did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? They answered, No, we have not even heard of that there is a Holy Spirit. So it's interesting that that Apollos didn't ask, Did you receive Jesus? But he asked, Did you receive the Holy Spirit? Because that's how important the Holy Spirit is. So many people know about God, and we've always like heard about Jesus, but the Holy Spirit is extremely important. Many people think that the Holy Spirit is like a force, right? Or an energy or an influence. So he's not a force, he's not an influence, he is not feminine, as we've seen in some movies, perhaps. The Holy Spirit is a person. Who's the Holy Spirit? A person. He's the third person of the Trinity. So we have the God the we have God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. So we do not worship three gods, we worship one God revealed himself in three persons. Who is the Holy Spirit? He has a personality, he's a person. He thinks, he has a will, he has emotions, he can be grieved, he speaks, he teaches, he guides, he comforts, he gives spiritual gifts to the church, he transforms us to become more like Jesus. Look at what John 14, 16 says, and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever. So that's what Jesus said. He's like, I'm gonna ask the Father, and he's gonna give you the Holy Spirit. He's your advocate. So we we see that in Acts 2, as I was saying when the church was praying, and when they were saying, God, you promised us the Holy Spirit, we need him. And the Holy Spirit came upon them. It says, like a like a strong wind, and they were filled, and they started speaking in new tongues. So no one can live the Christian life without the Holy Spirit. You you need to start a relationship with the Holy Spirit every day when you wake up, you you need to say, Good morning, Holy Spirit. If he's a person, you need to start treating him as a person and as a friend. You need to start saying, God, I need to have a relationship with you. Many times we focus our eyes just on Jesus, and that's great. But that's the promise God gave the church. I am leaving, but I I leave you the Holy Spirit. So we need to really cultivate and have our relationship with Him. And we need to make space for the Holy Spirit. You know, we we live in a world of distractions. We need we we live in a world of noise, just pure noise. And everyone wants a little bit of your attention, of your distractions. So if you're not intentional and if you don't make space for the Holy Spirit, guess what? You're not gonna have a relationship with the Holy Spirit. So from the moment you wake up, don't don't just look at your phone or your notifications by saying, but say, Holy Spirit, I need you. You know, I try to turn off all my notifications. I don't look at my phone when I wake up. I go to the Bible and I get on my knees and I say, Holy Spirit, I need you today. Because your prayer from yesterday, that was great. But you need a new prayer today. You need to surrender yourself into the Holy Spirit. And you know, I have a conversation with the Holy Spirit throughout the whole day. And something that something that I've been practicing, uh, like I'm a person that likes to be doing things, I like to be learning, I like to be studying, I like to I like to have podcasts when I'm on my way to anywhere, you know. How many of you guys drive so much here in Orlando? Amen. Yeah, from my house to anywhere, it's at least 45 minutes. So I'm used to driving. So when I'm driving, I usually have a podcast or I usually have something. But something that I've been doing is that I've had nothing. Hallelujah. How many of you have ever done that? It's it's it's crazy, right? So I've had nothing, but it's so good. And I'm just talking to the Holy Spirit, and I'm just talking to God, and I'm just saying, God, you're so good. Look at those flowers, look at those trees. Wow, God, your creation is amazing. Thank you for what He did. I was thanking the Lord yesterday for what He did at Serve Day, amen. Thank you guys. Why don't you give yourselves a big round of applause? You guys are serving this whole week. Amazing. We had 21 projects the whole week. So I was just thanking, God, you're so good. You you brought people who love you and they're giving away their time. They're giving away, you know, they could be doing anything else, but they love you so much and they love this city so much. And I was just thanking the Holy Spirit, but why? It's because I was making space. I was making space. And I remember one time after church, my kids they they come and they we have breakfast really early because we we get here early, so they have breakfast right like at 7 or 7:30. And then they don't eat nothing till like 3 p.m. Hallelujah. They're fasting, right? It's good for them. I tell them fasting is good. So at 3 p.m. they're so hungry. You know, we go to a restaurant, they eat, uh, and I see one of my my girls, she ordered like pasta, then I we we had steak, she had some of my steak, she had she ate all of her pasta, and then we we go next door and they sell milkshakes, and I'm like, she's definitely not gonna have that milkshake, she can't drink that milkshake. And guess what? She did, and something she said, she's like, There's always time for dessert, amen. Are you are you are you one of those people who say that? That's me. There's always time for dessert. So, just how there's always space, I mean, there's always space for dessert. You gotta make space for the Holy Spirit, you gotta have marching throughout the day for the Holy Spirit. So I just want to talk to you about two things. Number one, recognize your need for the Holy Spirit. Recognize your need for the Holy Spirit, just as we were saying, as the deer, you know, as that animal, the deer, they long for the streams of water. That that animal can't live without water. That's how much you need to long for God, the living God. So the psalmist compares his soul to the deer, desperately searching for water. It's not a casual interest, it's desperation. You know, many commentators believe that the psalm was written by someone who was cut off from the temple. Maybe someone who was used to worshiping in the temple, and then he he's not there anymore. He's like he's like, How I long to be in the temple, how I long to be in the presence of God, just worshiping. And that's hunger. That's hunger when you realize I can't lead my family without him, I can't overcome temptation without the Holy Spirit, I can't fulfill God's calling without the Holy Spirit, I can't become like Jesus without the Holy Spirit. And I like this quote by Charles Spurgeon. He says, A person who has never felt their spiritual poverty will never seek spiritual riches. So you need to have that desperation. You need to say, God, I am poor in my spirit. It's what Jesus said. Matthew 5, 3, he says, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. So until you realize you you need that hunger, you need that thirst for the Holy Spirit, He's not gonna come into your life. Because the Holy Spirit, he is so sensitive. He doesn't come unless you ask him to come. Think about Jesus. And I'm so amazed by Jesus because he's our greatest example. Amen. So look at Jesus for about 30 years. He was just there with his family, working. We don't hear much about Jesus from the age of 12 to like the age of 30. Then we see him and he comes and he's baptized by his cousin, John the Baptist. So John the Baptist, he's he's like, here's the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. And he comes and he's baptized. Look, even Jesus was baptized, the Son of God. So, how many of you know that we all need that baptism? Alright? So, the what is baptism? Baptism is a public declaration of your faith. You say, I am a Christian, I am dying to my old self, and I am a newborn believer. That's what baptizing, but what being baptized means. It's not it's nothing else. So even Jesus says, I need that baptism. So John the Baptist, he baptizes him, he comes out, and it says that the Holy Spirit came upon him, and it says that a dove came to him. So it's like a representation of the of the Holy Spirit. When you think of the dove, what do you think of that animal? It's very gentle, very calm, right? If you kinda like approach a dove like fast, they're gonna run away, right? So that's what the Holy Spirit is, it's very gentle, it's it's very, very soft. So you need to treat the Holy Spirit like that, and that's why we always say, May the Holy Spirit come and comfort you, because that's what the Holy Spirit is. If you need a comforter, you know, when whenever someone loses a family member and they're grieving, the only one who can comfort you is the Holy Spirit. And I I always write people, I cannot comfort you, but the Holy Spirit can comfort you, so he's our comforter. Whenever you're you're being led into temptation and you hear a voice that's saying you shouldn't do that, guess who that is? The Holy Spirit, because he's the one who convicts us of sin. Imagine this: Jesus, he was baptized, right? And the first thing he did, you might think, Oh, he's gonna go and preach, he's gonna go and make the disciples and call his disciples. You know what the first thing he did after he was baptized? He went into the desert. He went into the desert for 40 days. And why did he go into the desert? Because the enemy had to tempt him. So he was able to overcome temptation because the Holy Spirit was upon him. So when you're baptized and you receive the Holy Spirit, guess what? You're gonna be tempted. The enemy is gonna try to come and tempt you, but the spirit of the Lord is upon you, and you're gonna say no to that sin, and you're gonna say no to that adversary that wants to take away your blessing. How many of you say amen? Give Jesus a big hand. So that's what you need. You need to be poor in your spirit. It's like Moses. He said, if your presence does not go with us, do not send us from here. He was not asking for miracles, he was not asking for a bigger ministry, he wanted presence. He was gonna go into the promised land, but he says, I do not want to go into the promised land without your presence. So, number one, recognize your need for the Holy Spirit. Number two, feed your hunger for the Holy Spirit. Matthew 5, 6, it says, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. So you need to be hungry and thirsty for righteousness. That's what you need. You need hunger for the Holy Spirit because this is a promise for you. If you're hungry and if you're thirsty, he's promising you that you will be filled. And it's weird sometimes. How many of you know that sometimes our physical bodies is weird or our our digestive system or the way we eat, it's so weird, right? Because a few years ago already, I I adapted a new habit, which is like I don't snack between meals. So I have breakfast, no snack, lunch, no snack, and a small dinner, and it's crazy, and I don't get hungry. Because I don't I'm not eating between meals. When I used to snack, I used to get more hungry. But when I go to a birthday party, or when I go to anywhere and I start snacking, right? Guess what? All of a sudden I get so hungry, and I want more snacking, and I want more junk food because it's it's weird. How many of you know that that's so weird, right? You're you're feeding yourself with junk food, and then you get more hungry because it's not real food, right? So that works in the physical, and and in the spiritual, you actually need to snack a lot out of the good things, right? In the spiritual, you need to eat the whole time. That's why I'm telling you. In the spiritual, you need to feed yourself with the word of God. Amen. You need to feed yourself with prayer, you need to feed yourself by attending a small group or a go group that we call them, because you're feeding yourself with the real food. Also, in in the spiritual, what is junk food? Junk food is just noise, right? Social media, all those, I don't know, series, and you can be filled with junk food as well in the spirit in the spiritual, but you're gonna say, God, I want the real thing, I need your presence in my life. That's what I need. And and how do you cultivate this hunger? Number one, spend time in his presence before asking for his blessings. Spend time in his presence before asking for his blessings. You know, imagine visiting a friend just to ask him for a favor or for money. Every time you you you visit a friend, you just say, Hey man, can I go visit you? And you're always asking for a favor or money. You know, and in a period of time, that's not really a relationship, but a transaction, right? So you don't want that with the Holy Spirit. You actually say, God, I'm here because I need you. Number two, remove whatever dulls your spiritual appetite. So, what's consuming your attention? What is competing with God's voice? You know, as I was talking to you guys about snacking, also, when my kids come home from school, the number one thing they say when I pick them up is I'm hungry. Amen. So, but I'm like, don't snack, just have something very small because I don't want you guys to miss your dinner. Sometimes they listen, sometimes they don't. And you know, when they when they eat something big, they come home from school so hungry, they eat whatever comes, a cereal or something. Guess what? It's dinner time. What's gonna happen? They're not hungry. So I'm like, great, because they didn't wait, but we we need to remove those little snacks, those little things that are just like filling us, and they're not allowing us to have the big thing. So remove whatever dulls your spiritual appetite, and you know, as we're coming to the 21 days of prayer, this is a great time for you to say, God, I'm gonna shut down the distractions from this world, and I'm just gonna come into your presence. And uh, and you might think of doing a fast, maybe like a soul fast, could be a social media or any type of fast that could be a soul. Maybe you could fast sugar, maybe you could fast chocolate, whatever the love the Lord puts in your heart for 21 days, just seek him. We're gonna be gathering in the mornings at 6 a.m. from Monday through Friday, and just be there. Say, God, I want to feed my spirit with your presence, with your power for 21 days. You know, Jesus did it for 40 days. No food, no water. 40 days, imagine that. And number three, expect God to meet you. Jesus said in John 7, 37, 43, it says, If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. He doesn't say if anyone's talented, if anyone has it all together, he says, if anyone is thirsty. So God responds to hungry hearts. So imagine like a campfire. How does it stir? How does it stay lighting? How does it stay burned? You have to keep putting wood, right? Because if you don't put wood, what happens? It's gonna go away. So, in the same way, you need to keep feeding your spirit, and the the Holy Spirit is gonna be filled, it's gonna fill you, it's gonna fill you with his presence. So, those two things. Number one, recognize your that you need the Holy Spirit, and number two, feed your hunger with the Holy Spirit, feed your hunger with the Holy Spirit. Don't just say, Lord, bless me, but say, Lord, I need you in my life. Can you say amen? Amen. Give Jesus a big hand today. Why don't you stand and say, Lord, thank you for your presence. I need you so much, Lord. I need you so much. I don't I don't just want your blessings, Lord, but I want you and say, Holy Spirit, I want to be filled with you. I want to be filled with your presence. I want to be filled, just how Jesus was filled, Jesus. Because you, Father, you promised us that you would send us the Comforter, that you would send us the Holy Spirit, and today we're here and we're crying out for the Holy Spirit. We need the Holy Spirit. We need your presence, Lord. Just tell him how hungry you are for him. I am desperate for your Holy Spirit. It's not like I want him a little bit, but I need a desperation. I need a desperation for the Holy Spirit. That's what I need today, Lord. I need a desperation. I need you so much, Holy Spirit. You are that third person, Father of the Trinity. I want to get to know you as a friend. I want to get to know you as a friend. From the moment I wake up, I want to be able to say, Holy Spirit, I need you. And I want to make room for you. And I want to make space for you. Come, Lord, come and move in my heart. Come and move in my spirit, Lord. You promised us the Holy Spirit. You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses. Lord, as Jesus promised, I will ask the Father, and He will send you the Comforter, the Holy Spirit. Thank you for the Holy Spirit. Come on, lift up your hands and say thank you for the Holy Spirit.

And we're just quiet. And you like honestly say, Holy Spirit, I need you. Just on your own. Have some time with the Holy Spirit to seek him in his presence. Perhaps as you as you seek him, he's gonna start convicting you of sin. Maybe he's gonna start comforting you. You're going through a hot difficult situation. You're just gonna feel his presence. If your presence is not with me, Lord, I do not want to go anywhere. Just be filled with the Holy Spirit right now.
