Tuesday in Holy Week. Our Liturgy is here:Morning Prayer 3.31.26, Tuesday in Holy Week | Daily Office Network
Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Roy, the vicar of the Daily Office Network. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis to pray morning prayer. We use the 1979 Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer as our guide. We mix in artwork and a news story. We have music at the end. We come from several different faith traditions and several different countries. All are welcome here, where we do our best to exercise tolerance and decency with one another. Now let's settle in and begin morning prayer. Today is March the 31st, 2026. In the life of the church, it is a Tuesday and Holy Week. If you're looking for our podcast, there's information here at the top of our document of how to find that on Apple and Spotify. Let's begin. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, was not yes and no, but in him it is always yes. Women and bishops from across the Anglican commune gathered at St. Peter's Anglican Church for morning prayer just hours before the historic March 25th installation of Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Malully. The start of a joyous day for women in ministry and church leadership. There were maybe 25 of us in the room, women from Africa, Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, all over England. Archbishop Linda Nichols, former Anglican Church of Canada primate, said the focus was on praying for Sarah in her role with the communion in her role with England as a mother and a wife. There was just a sense of the communion coming together, such joy that this is happening and people were rejoicing with her on this day. In the photograph above, Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Maluly, stops to pose for a photograph following her March 25th installation as the 106th person as the first woman to hold the office in its 1400-year history. Congratulations to Archbishop Maluly. Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow, which was brought upon me, whom the Lord has inflicted, afflicted. I'll lead us in the general confession, after which I'll ask Mother Angel to pronounce absolution, and Addie to lead us in the invitatory. First the general confession. God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior, Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen.
SPEAKER_09Almighty God, have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Lord, open our lips, and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
SPEAKER_11Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. Come, let us sing to the Lord, let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before God's presence with thanksgiving and raise to the Lord a shout with songs. For you are a great God, you are great above all gods. In your hands are the caverns of the earth, and the heights of the hills are yours also. The sea is yours, for you made it, and your hands have molded the dry land. Come, let us bow down and bend the knee and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For you are our God, and we are the people of your pasture and the sheep of your hand. Oh, that today we would hearken to your voice.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, Addie and Mother Angel. Our psalms appointed for today are Psalm number six and psalm number twelve. I'm going to ask Jill to start our psalm, and Martha, if you would join in, and the two of you would trade back and forth.
SPEAKER_03Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger. Do not punish me in your wrath.
SPEAKER_12Heal me, Lord, for my bones are wrecked.
SPEAKER_03My spirit shakes with terror. How long, O Lord, how long?
SPEAKER_12Time, O Lord, and deliver me. Save me where your voice is sick.
SPEAKER_03For in death no one remembers you. And who will give you thanks in the grave?
SPEAKER_12I grew weary because of my groaning. Every night I drench my bed and flood my crush with tears. For the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.
SPEAKER_03The Lord has heard my supplication. The Lord accepts my prayer.
SPEAKER_12All my enemies shall be confounded and quick with fear.
SPEAKER_03Help me, Lord, for there is no godly one left. The faithful have vanished from among us.
SPEAKER_12With a smooth tongue is speak from a double heart.
SPEAKER_03Oh that the Lord would cut off all smooth tongues and close the lips that utter proud boasts.
SPEAKER_12Our lips are our own, who is Lord over us.
SPEAKER_03Because the needy are oppressed and the poor cry out in misery.
SPEAKER_12Like silver refined from oil and purified seven times in the fire.
SPEAKER_03Oh Lord, watch over us and save us from this generation forever.
SPEAKER_12That which is worthless is highly prized by everyone.
SPEAKER_03Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Amen. Thank you, Martha and Jill. This is by Edward Benderman from 1932, Jews Mourning the Exile in Babylon. Our first reading is from Lamentations chapter one, verses seventeen through twenty-two. Chad, would you lead this?
SPEAKER_00Zion stretches out her hands, but there is no one to comfort her. The Lord has commanded against Jacob that his neighbors should become his foes. Jerusalem has become a filthy thing among them. The Lord is in the right, for I have rebelled against his word. But hear, all you peoples, and behold my suffering. My young women and young men have gone into captivity. I called to my lovers, but they deceived me. My priests and my elders perished in the city while seeking food to revive their strength. See, O Lord, how distressed I am, my stomach churns, my heart is wrung within me, because I have been very rebellious. In the street the sword bereaves, in the house it is like death. They heard how I was groaning, and with with no one to comfort me. All my enemies heard of my trouble, they are glad that you have done it. Bring on the day you have announced, and let them be as I am. Let all their evil doing come before you and deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my transgressions, for my groans are many, and my heart is faint. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_01Thanks be to God. Thank you, Chad. Our first canticle is a song of praise, Mother Unjell.
SPEAKER_06Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers. You are worthy of praise. Glory to you. Glory to you for the radiance of your holy name. We will praise you and highly exalt you forever. Glory to you in the splendor of your temple on the throne of your majesty. Glory to you. Glory to you, seated between the cherubim. We will praise you and highly exalt you forever. Glory to you, beholding the deaths in the high vault of heaven. Glory to you. Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We will praise you and highly exalt you forever.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, Mother Angel. Saint Paul, Timothy and Silas walk on a highway in Asia prior to Paul's arrest. Our next reading is from Second Corinthians chapter one verses eight through twenty two. Paul, would you lead this?
SPEAKER_10We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, of the affliction we experienced in Asia, for we were so utterly, unbearably crushed, that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death, so that we would rely not on ourselves, but on God who raises the dead. He who rescued us from so deadly a peril will continue to rescue us. On him we have set our hope that we will rescue that he will rescue us again, as you also join in helping us by your prayers, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many. Indeed, this is our boast, the testimony of our conscience. We have behaved in the world with frankness and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom, but by the grace of God, and all the more toward you, for we write you nothing other than what you can read and also understand. I hope you will understand until the end, as you have already understood us in part, that on the day of the Lord Jesus we are your boast even as you are our boast. Since I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a double favor. I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and to come back to you from Macedonia and have you send me on to Judea. Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans according to ordinary human standards, ready to say yes, yes and no no at the same time? As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been yes and no. For the Son of God Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Sylvanus and Timothy and I was not yes and no, but in him it is always yes. For in him every one of God's promises is a yes. For this reason it is through him that we say the amen to the glory of God, but is it God who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us by putting his seal on us and giving us his spirit in our hearts as a first instalment. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_01Thanks be to God. Thank you, Paul. Our next canticle is a song to the lamb, Mother Angel.
SPEAKER_06Splendor an honor and kingly power are yours by right, O Lord of God, for you created everything that is, and by your will they were created, and have their being, and yours right by right, O Lamb that was slain, for with your blood you have redeemed O God from every family, language, people, and nation, a kingdom of priests to serve our God, and so to him who sits upon the throne, and to Christ the Lamb, be worship and praise, dominion and splendor forever and forevermore. Splendor and honor and kingly power are yours by right, O Lord and God.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, Mother Angel. Jesus meets John. Deacon Diana, would you lead this one?
SPEAKER_04Again, Jesus and the disciples came to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to him and said, By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority to do them? Jesus said to them, I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come from heaven? Or was it of human origin? Answer me. They argued with one another. If we say from heaven, he will say, Why then did you not believe him? But shall we say, of human origin? They were afraid of the crowd, for all regarded John as truly a prophet. So they answered Jesus, We do not know. And Jesus said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_01Thanks be to God. Thank you, Deacon. And now the apostle's creed. Carol, would you lead us in the creed?
SPEAKER_02I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again, he ascended into heaven. He is seated on the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, Carolyn. And now the prayers begin with our Lord's Prayer. Marcia in Barbados, would you lead us in the Lord's Prayer and then we'll read the suffrages?
SPEAKER_08The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_01And also with you.
SPEAKER_08Let us pray. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily way. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Help us, O God, our Saviour.
SPEAKER_08Deliver us and forgive us our sins.
SPEAKER_01Look upon your congregation.
SPEAKER_08Give to your people the blessing of peace.
SPEAKER_01Declare your glory among the nations.
SPEAKER_08And your wonders among all peoples.
SPEAKER_01Do not let the oppressed be shamed and turned away.
SPEAKER_08Never forget the lives of your poor.
SPEAKER_01Continue your loving kindness to those who know you.
SPEAKER_08And your favor to those who are true of heart.
SPEAKER_01Satisfy us by your loving kindness in the morning.
SPEAKER_08So shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, Marcia. An Israeli soldier guards the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem's old city. Father Michael says the Israeli Defense Force is there to protect Jews and to harass Christians and Muslims, as he witnessed several years ago.
SPEAKER_07Grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ, that we may gladly suffer shame and loss for the sake of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory to serve you in freedom and in peace. Give to the people of our countries a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance that we may. Use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Amen. Thank you, Patricia. And now it's time for our weekly report on military news called They Have Names. It was started in 2007 by our late honorary deacon, Clint Gilliland. They have names. Our service members at home and abroad, they're in danger from the minute that they take the oath. We tell of their heroism, and if there are casualties, we speak their names. And here's where things stand this week. We have no casualties in war to report. However, we do have a story this morning. Thousands of Marines are headed to the Middle East as the United States weighs whether to deepen its role in Iran as part of a military buildup, leading to more questions about possible ground troops or missions tied to the Strait of Hormuz. About 2,500 Marines are deploying with additional warships as the conflict enters a more dangerous phase. It was also released, I think, on Thursday or Friday of last week, that the 82nd Airborne Division is also preparing to deploy. According to reporters Friday from Reuters and from the Associated Press, citing the U.S. officials, Military.com, we've reached out for comment to the Defense Department, U.S. Central Command, and the White House, but as of this posting have received no official word, Military.com said. The move comes as the war shifts beyond airstrikes into a broader fight over the shipping lanes, oil infrastructure, and regional deterrence. President Donald Trump's statement of I'm not putting troops anywhere, before adding, we will do whatever is necessary. Could it now include boots on the ground? Pray for all of our soldiers, our sailors, our airmen, all of those serving our country and our armed forces. We pray for all of those on active duty, and we just list a few here. Father David, a chaplain who is deployed. Logan, Arnold, Dudley, Raleigh, Janelle, Amanda, and Rob. Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care in keeping all of the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace. Strengthen them in their trials and their temptations. Give them the courage to face the perils which beset them, and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And a collect for peace. O God, the author of peace and the lover of concord, to know you as eternal life, to serve you as perfect freedom, defend us your humble servants, and all assaults of our enemies, that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And that's our report this week, for they have names. Let's remember to pray for all of our service members, those at home, those abroad, and support those who keep the home fires burning. Continue with the colic for the mission of the church. I'm going to ask uh Robert to lead this, and then I'll bless the Lord and bless us.
SPEAKER_05Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross, that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace. So clothe us in your spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you, for the honor of your name. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Let us bless the Lord.
SPEAKER_05Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_01Now go in safety, for you cannot go where God is not. Go in love, for love alone endures, and go in peace, for that is God's gift to those whose hearts and minds are in his Son Jesus. And the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, love of God, the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you now and remain with you always. And that is morning prayer on this Tuesday. Thank you for coming to pray today. Wherever you go, take that love of Jesus that lives inside of you, that Jesus that you hold in your heart. Share that Jesus with the world. Show that Jesus to the world. We need more Jesus right now. Hope to see you back with us tomorrow safe and sound.
