Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Roy, the Vicar of the Daily Office Network. I'm an ordained Episcopal priest in the Diocese of Minnesota. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis. We come from several different faith traditions in several different countries. We use the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer as our guide. We have a news story. We mix an artwork, sometimes a video at the end. All are welcome here where we do our best to exercise tolerance and decency with one another. Now let's settle in and begin morning prayer. Today is the 28th of April, 2026. It is a Tuesday in the fourth week of Easter. If you're looking for our podcast, search for us on Apple or Spotify by using the keywords Daily Office Network or clicking on one of the links that's provided here. Let's begin. Because our message of the gospel came to you, not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. In a former segregated school in Virginia, an Islamic college has been reconnecting its mostly African-American Muslim students with a legacy of faith and scholarship largely erased from mainstream history. IQOU Theological College in the town of Charlotte Courthouse for the past two years details a small borrowed collection of ancient manuscripts from the West African city of Timbuktu in Mali, a center of Islamic learning that thrived between the 13th and the 17th centuries. It's also a region where many Africans were kidnapped during the transatlantic slave trade. Hafiz Hassan Ali Quadray, a Quran teacher at the college, said that 17 manuscripts can offer African-American Muslims a concrete link to a part of their ancestors' history. In the photo above, women view centuries old manuscripts during a 2024 Muslim leadership conference in Charlotte Courthouse in Virginia. Addie, would you lead us in the invitatory and this altar?

SPEAKER_03

Lord, open our lips.

SPEAKER_01

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

SPEAKER_03

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. Hallelujah. Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. Therefore, let us keep the peace, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ being raised from the dead will never die again. Death no longer has dominion over him. The death that he died, he died to sin once for all. But the life he lives, he lives to God. So also consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruit of those who have fallen asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. Hallelujah.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you, Addie. Our psalm appointed for this morning is Psalm number 45. I'm going to ask Martha and Carol to lead our psalm. Martha, would you start?

SPEAKER_09

My heart is staring with a noble song. Let me recite what I have fashioned for the king. My tongue shall be the pen of a skilled writer.

SPEAKER_11

You are the fairest of men. Grace flows from your lips because God has blessed you forever.

SPEAKER_09

Strap your sword upon your tie, O mighty warrior. In your pride and in your majesty.

SPEAKER_11

Ride out and conquer in the cause of truth and for the sake of justice.

SPEAKER_09

Your right hand will show you marvelous things. Your arrows are very sharp, O mighty warrior. Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your reign. You love righteousness and hate iniquity.

SPEAKER_11

Therefore, God, your God has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows.

SPEAKER_09

All your comments are fragment with myrrh, alous, and cassia. And the music of strings from our palaces make you glad.

SPEAKER_11

King's daughters stand among the ladies of the court. On your right hand is the queen, adorned with the gold of Ophir.

SPEAKER_09

Forget your people in your father's house.

SPEAKER_11

The king will have pleasure in your beauty. He is your master, therefore do him honor.

SPEAKER_09

The people of Kah are here with a gift. The rich among the people seek your favor.

SPEAKER_11

All glorious is the princess as she enters. Her gown is cloth of gold.

SPEAKER_09

Any broader carol she is brought to the king. After her, the primaries follow in possession.

SPEAKER_11

With joy and gladness they are brought and enter into the palace of the king.

SPEAKER_09

In place of fathers, O king, you shall have sons. You shall make them princess over all the eyes.

SPEAKER_11

I will make your name to be remembered from one generation to another. Therefore, nations will praise you forever and ever.

SPEAKER_09

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_01

Amen. Thank you, Martha and Carol. It was a great reading. We see one here. Today's lesson from Exodus is one of three in the Old Testament referring to golden calves as idols. The others are in 1 Kings and Nehemiah, and they bear striking similarities while varying in who is the target of God's wrath. Patricia, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_07

Moses said to Aaron, What did this people do to you that you have brought so such a great sin upon them? And Aaron said, Do not let the anger of my Lord burn hot. You know the people, that they are bent on evil. They said to me, Make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him. So I said to them, Whatever has whoever has gold, take it off. So they gave it to me, and I threw it into this fire, and out came this calf. When Moses saw that the people were running wild, for Aaron had let them run wild to the derision of their enemies, then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, Who is on the Lord's side? Come to me. And all the sons of Levi gathered around him, and he said to them, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, put your sword on your side, each of you, go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill your brother, your friend, and your neighbor. The sons of Levi did as Moses commanded, and about three thousand of the people fell on that day. Moses said, Today you have ordained yourselves to the service of the Lord, each one at the cost of a son or a brother, and so have brought a blessing on yourselves this day. On the next day Moses said to the people, You have sinned a great sin, but now I will go up to the Lord. Perhaps I can make atonement for your sin. So Moses returned to the Lord and said, Alas, this people has sinned a great sin. They have made for themselves gods of gold. But now, if you will only forgive their sin, but if not, blot me out of the book that you have written. But the Lord said to Moses, Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot out of my book. But now go, lead the people to the place about which I have spoken to you. See, my anger shall go in front of you. Nevertheless, when the day comes for punishment, I will punish them for their sin. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_01

Thanks be to God. Thank you, Patricia. Our first canticle is a song of pilgrimage. Mother Angel, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_06

Before I ventured forth, even while I was very young, I sought wisdom openly in my prayer, in the four courts of the temple, I must follow, and I will seek her to the end. From first blossom to early fruit, she has been the delight of my heart. My foot is kept firmly to the true path. Diligently from my youth have I pursued him. I inclined my air a little and received him. I found for myself much wisdom and became adapted. To the woman who gives me wisdom, will I give glory? For I have resolved to live according to her way. From the beginning I gained courage from her, therefore I will not be forsaken. In my inmost being I have been stirred to seek her. Therefore have I gained a good possession. As my reward, the Almighty has given me the gift of language, and with it I will offer praise to God.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you, Angel. Saint Paul is called to Macedonia. The iconographer of this one is unknown. Paul, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_05

Paul, Savannah, Sylvanus and Timothy, to the Church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, grace to you and peace. We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father, your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers and sisters, beloved by God, that He has chosen you, because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit, and with full conviction, just as you know what kind of persons we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaea. For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaea, but in every place your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speak about it. For the people of those regions report about us what kind of welcome we had had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God, and to wait for his son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_01

Thanks be to God. Thank you, Paul. Our second canticle is a song of faith. Mother Angel.

SPEAKER_06

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. By divine mercy we have a new birth into a living hope. Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, we have an inheritance that is imperishable in heaven. The ransom that was paid to free us was not paid in silver or gold, but in the precious blood of Christ, the lamb without spot or stained. God raised Jesus from the dead and gave him glory so that we might have faith and hope in God.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you, Angel. Painting is called Sermon on the Mount. Deacon Elizabeth, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_08

Sure. Jesus said, Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you, and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who are before you. You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how can it how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything but is thrown out and trampled under foot. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_01

Thanks be to God. Thank you, Deacon. And now the Apostles' Creed. Robert, would you lead us in the creed?

SPEAKER_04

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

SPEAKER_01

Amen. Thank you, Robert. And now the prayers, excuse me, and now the prayers begin with our Lord's Prayer. Jacqueline, would you lead us in the Lord's Prayer and then we'll read the suffrages?

SPEAKER_02

The Lord be with you.

SPEAKER_01

And also with you.

SPEAKER_02

Let us pray. Our Father in heaven. Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial. And deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours. Now and forever.

SPEAKER_01

Amen. Help us, O God our Saviour.

SPEAKER_02

Deliver us and forgive us our sins.

SPEAKER_01

Look upon your congregation.

SPEAKER_02

Give to your people the blessing of peace.

SPEAKER_01

Declare your glory among the nations and your wonders among all peoples. Do not let the oppressed be shamed and turned away.

SPEAKER_02

Never forget the lives of your poor.

SPEAKER_01

Continue your loving kindness to those who know you.

SPEAKER_02

And your favor to those who are true of heart.

SPEAKER_01

Satisfy us by your loving kindness in the morning.

SPEAKER_02

So shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you, Jacqueline. I stop right there. It almost looks like a painting by Carl Bloch or somebody. It's actually a photograph taken by one of our parishioners. It's a beautiful sunrise. From Katrina Soto's vantage point. It is quite lovely. Now, four prayers. The colic of the day for the fourth Sunday of Easter. A colic for the nation. I'm sorry, two prayers. Had my days mixed up. Two prayers. Deacon Diana, would you take these two prayers?

SPEAKER_00

O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people. Grant that when we hear his voice, we may know who calls us, each by name, and follow where he leads. Who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns one God forever and ever. Amen. Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory, to serve you in freedom and in peace. Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

SPEAKER_01

Amen. Thank you, Deacon. And now it's time for our report on military news called They Have Names. It was started in 2007 by our late honorary deacon Clint Gilliland, a retired Navy medic. They have names, our service members at home and abroad. They're in danger from the minute that they take the oath. We tell of their heroism, and if there are casualties, we speak their names. We pray for all of them and we pray to God for peace in every nation. Here's where things stand this week. Thanks be to God. We don't have any names of any of our service members who have died, either in combat or from an accident that happened in training. But we do have a news story. It still brings me joy to not have to bring you someone who has died. The week that ends April the 28th today. A photograph of Senator Mark Kelly. 73 former U.S. admirals, generals, and service secretaries have submitted a legal filing in defense of retired Navy captain, Senator Mark Kelly, who has battled the Trump administration for months due to the controversial videos that spiraled into court battles. Kelly and a handful of other Democratic military veterans made and released a video in November of 2025 reinforcing active duty service members of their constitutional right to refuse illegal orders. The 39-page Amicus brief, which was filed Friday, April the 17th, was signed by retired military officers and secretaries of the Air Force, Army, and Navy, who are described as possessing extensive experience in leadership roles along with demonstrated along with a demonstrated commitment to an expertise in promoting a disciplined and strong military and ensuring the security of the nation. Mark Kelly is not standing alone. Other officers are standing with him now that if our service members feel they're given an illegal order, they can say no. They have recourse and they have people who will stand behind them for disobeying orders that are illegal. We pray for those that we love on active duty, all of them, but we name just a few. Father David, a chaplain who is serving overseas, Logan, Arnold, Dudley, Raleigh, Janelle, Amanda, and Rob, a married couple. Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care in keeping all of the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad, defend them day by day with your heavenly grace, strengthen them in their trials and their temptations, give them the courage to face the perils which beset them, and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And a collect for peace. O God, the author of peace and the lover of concord, to know you as eternal life, to serve you as perfect freedom, defend us your humble servants in all assaults of our enemies, that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And that's our report for they have names. Let's remember to pray for our service members at home and abroad and support those who keep the home fires burning. I'm going to ask Jill to lead this, and then I'll bless the Lord and bless us.

SPEAKER_10

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace. So clothe us in your spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you for the honor of your name. Amen.

SPEAKER_01

Let us bless the Lord.

SPEAKER_10

Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia.

SPEAKER_01

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all evermore. The blessing of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be upon you now and remain with you always. Amen. That is morning prayer on this Tuesday. Thank you for coming to pray today. Wherever you go, take that love of Jesus in your heart. You know that Jesus you carry right here. Share that Jesus with the world. Show that Jesus to the world. Hope to see you back with us tomorrow.
