Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Roy, the Vicar of the Daily Office Network. I'm an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Minnesota. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who come from several different faith traditions in several different countries. We gather together Monday through Friday to pray morning prayer at 7 and 9 Eastern time. We use the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer as our guide. We mix in artwork. We have a news story at the top, usually a video at the end. All are welcome here where we do our best to exercise tolerance and decency with one another. Now let's settle in and begin morning prayer. It's May Day. It's the first of May, 2026. In the life of the church, it's a high holy day, and then we recognize the saints Apostle St. Philip and also Saint James. If you're looking for our podcast, you'll find us on Apple or Spotify. Search the keywords Daily Office Network, and you can take this with you. Let's begin. Jesus answered, Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these. Wood's been accused of sexual harassment, bullying, and plagiarism, and faces three church charges for alleged violation of his ordination vows, conduct giving cause for scandal or offense, and sexual immorality. The Tuesday announcement also revealed that Wood filed a motion to dismiss this case. The court will hear their arguments on that motion beginning on May the 7th. Pray for the church. Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_03Lord, open our lips.
SPEAKER_06And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
SPEAKER_03Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia Alleluia, Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, my but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ being raised from the dead will never die again. Death no longer has dominion over him. The death that he died, he died to sin once for all. But the life he lives, he lives to God. So also consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord, allelujah. Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep, for since by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all shall be made alive.
SPEAKER_06Thank you, Jill. Our psalm this morning is a portion of Psalm number 119, verses 137 through 160. And I'm going to ask Robert and Martha to lead our psalm. Robert, would you start?
SPEAKER_07You are righteous, O Lord, and upright are your judgments.
SPEAKER_02You have issues your decrease with justice in upright faithfulness.
SPEAKER_07My indignation has consumed me because my enemies forget your words.
SPEAKER_02Your word has been tested to the utmost, and your servant holds it dear.
SPEAKER_07I am small and of little account, yet I do not forget your commandments.
SPEAKER_02Your justice is an everlasting justice, and your law is the truth.
SPEAKER_07Trouble and distress have come upon me, yet your commandments are my delight.
SPEAKER_02The righteousness of your decrees is everlasting. Grant me understanding, and I believe.
SPEAKER_07Early in the morning I cry out to you, for in your word is my trust.
SPEAKER_02My eyes are open in the night washes. And I may meditate upon your promise.
SPEAKER_07Hear my voice, O Lord, ascending to your loving kind according to your loving kindness, according to your judgments. Give me life. You, O Lord, are near at hand, and all your commandments are true. Behold my affliction and deliver me, for I do not forget your law.
SPEAKER_02According to your promise, give me life.
SPEAKER_07Deliverance is far from the wicked, for they do not stick, for they do not study your statutes.
SPEAKER_02Great is your compassion, O Lord. Preserve my life according to your judgments. I look with nothing at the flip.
SPEAKER_07See how I love your commandments. O Lord, in your mercy, preserve me.
SPEAKER_02The heart of your word is true. All your righteous judgments and you forevermore.
SPEAKER_07Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_06Thank you, Martha and Robert. That was a great reading. This is Job depicted as a king. It's an interesting way to think of him when you think about it. He had it all and then he lost it all. Our first lesson is from Job, chapter 23, verse 1 through 12. Chad, would one of you lead this?
SPEAKER_01Then Job answered, Today also my complaint is bitter. His hand is heavy despite my groaning. Oh that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his dwelling. I would lay my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments. I would learn what he would answer me and understand what he would say to me. Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No, but he would give heed to me. There an upright person could reason with him, and I should be acquitted forever by my judge. If I go forward he is not there, or backward I cannot perceive him. On the left he hides, and I cannot behold him. I turn to the right, but I cannot see him. But he knows the way that I take. When he has tested me I shall come out like gold. My foot has held fast to his steps. I have kept his way and have not turned aside. I have not departed from the commandment of his lips, I have treasured in my bosom the words of his mouth. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_06Thanks be to God. Thank you, Chan. Our first canticle is a song of Zachariah. Mother Angel, would you lead this?
SPEAKER_05In the tender compassion of Magad, the Madon from Anhama shall break upon us. Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel. You have come to your people and set them free. You have raised them from us, almighty Savior, born of the house of your servant David. Through your holy prophets, you promised above, to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us, to show mercy to our foreigners, and to remember your holy covenant. This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham, to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship you without fear, holy and righteous before you, all the days of our life, and you too shall be called the prophet of the most high. For you will go before the Lord to prepare the way, to give God's people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God, the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. In the tender compassion of God, the dawn from on high shall break upon us.
SPEAKER_06Thank you, Mother Unjo. As this is a high holy day, and we're recognizing the apostles, there are two readings. Our second reading, excuse me, our second reading comes from John and deals with Philip and Nathaniel. Jesus calls Philip and Nathaniel Nat is another name for Bartholomew. This is from pondering on a faith journey. Our reading is from John chapter 1, verses 43 through 51. Deacon Diana, would you lead this?
SPEAKER_00The next day, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him about who Moses in the law and all who Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus, son of Joseph from Nazareth. Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. And Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him. He said to him, Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit. Nathaniel asked him, Where did you get to know me? Jesus answered, I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you. Nathaniel replied, Rabbi, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel. Jesus answered, Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these. And he said to him, Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_06Thanks be to God. Thank you, Deacon. Our next canticle is the Todayum. Mother Angel.
SPEAKER_05We praise you, O God. We acclaim you as Lord. All creation worships you, the Father everlasting. Do you all angels, all the powers of heaven, the cherubim and seraphim sing in endless praise. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white robed army of martyrs praise you. Throughout the world, the holy church acclaims you. Father of majesty and bounded, your true and only son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and God. You Christ are the King of Glory, the eternal son of the Father. When you took our flesh to set us free, you humbly chose the virgin's womb. You overcame the sting of death and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God's right hand in glory. We believe that you will come to be our judge. Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting.
SPEAKER_06Thank you, Mother Angel. That was beautiful. And now the apostles' creed. Addie, would you lead us in the creed?
SPEAKER_10I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day, he rose again. He ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
SPEAKER_06Amen. Thank you, Annie. And now the prayers begin with our Lord's Prayer. Paul, would you lead us in the Lord's Prayer and then we'll read the suffrages?
SPEAKER_08The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_06And also with you.
SPEAKER_08Let us pray. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil, for the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_06Help us, O God our Savior.
SPEAKER_08Deliver us and forgive us our sins.
SPEAKER_06Look upon your congregation.
SPEAKER_08Give to your people the blessing of peace.
SPEAKER_06Declare your glory among the nations.
SPEAKER_08And your wonders among all peoples.
SPEAKER_06Do not let the oppressed be shamed and turned away.
SPEAKER_08Never forget the lives of your poor.
SPEAKER_06Continue your loving kindness to those who know you.
SPEAKER_08And your favor to those who are true of heart.
SPEAKER_06Satisfy us by your loving kindness in the morning.
SPEAKER_08So shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life. Thank you, Paul.
SPEAKER_06These are icons of our saints of the day, Philip and James. Philip and James are commemorated together because we don't know anything about them except what's in the New Testament, and even that is subject to the confusion and scholarly dispute. It's possible that James the Less was the author of the Epistle of James, or at least of the original source material for it. Philip may have been the companion of Paul mentioned in some letters. In any event, these two were numbered among the apostles. And now two prayers, the collect of the day for Saint Philip and Saint James, Apostles, and a collect for Fridays. Deacon Elizabeth, would you lead us in these two prayers?
SPEAKER_09Sure. Almighty God, who gave to apostles Philip and James grace and strength to bear witness to the truth. Grant that we, being mindful of their victory of faith, may glorify in life and death the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Almighty God, whose most dear son went not up to joy, but first he suffered pain and entered not into glory before he was crucified. Mercifully grant that we walking in the way of the cross may find it none other than the way of life and peace through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen. Amen.
SPEAKER_06Thank you, Deacon. We'll continue with the prayer for the mission of the church. I'm going to ask Patricia to lead this, and then I'll bless the Lord and bless us.
SPEAKER_04Oh God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your spirit upon all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
SPEAKER_06Let us bless the Lord. Alleluia, hallelujah.
SPEAKER_04Thanks be to God. Hallelujah.
SPEAKER_06Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing. To the only God, our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord before all time, now and forever. And like your apostles Philip and James, Lord, may we hear your voice, follow where you lead, ever keeping you in front of us in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And the blessing of God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be upon you now and remain with you always. Amen. And that is morning prayer on this Friday. Wherever you go today, take that love of Jesus that lives inside of you. That Jesus that you carry and hold in your heart. Share that Jesus with the world. Show that Jesus to the world. Hope to see you back with us safe and sound on Monday.
