Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Roy, the vicar of the Daily Office Network. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis to pray morning prayer Monday through Friday. We play pray live at 7 and 9 a.m. Eastern time. We come from several different faith traditions in several different countries. We do our best to exercise tolerance and decency here with one another. Let's begin morning prayer. Today is the 5th of May, 2026. In the life of the church, we recognize the martyrs of the Reformation error. The Daily Office Network is podcasting. You can find us on Apple or Spotify. You go there, search Keywords Daily Office Network, and download the podcast, and you can listen to us just about anywhere. Once it's downloaded, it's yours. Let's begin. The goat shall bear on itself all the iniquities to a barren region, and the goat shall be set free in the wilderness. Five men in a room on the outskirts of Boston believe they can change the world. It is described as American ingenuity in action, according to the team leader and CEO Canwar Singh, who's pictured above with the five. Singh serves as uh serves as country, whether as a captain in the United States Army, Massachusetts National Guard, or while leading the 100% American-owned Massachusetts-based company, Skyline Nav AI Incorporated. Singh saw during his own time in service that foreign threats were already becoming more sophisticated. Over the past 12 months, Singh had spent time with partners and allies in places like Ukraine, Taiwan, Latvia, Poland, and the United Arab Emirates, saying you can feel the future of warfare in the air. Specifically, his concerns were derived from the impact of the global positioning system or GPS, not just in warfare, but in everyday life. A technology used by billions of people has, like any other modern device or inventions, its drawbacks. GPS technology that can be easily manipulated by adversaries and nefarious actors. Excuse me. There's a story link there. It is a lengthy story, but it's nice to know that someone is thinking about those things. Christ has entered not into a sanctuary made with hands, a copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Addie, would you lead us in the invitatory in the Psalter this morning?
SPEAKER_03Lord, open our lips.
SPEAKER_01And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
SPEAKER_03Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. Hallelujah. Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. Therefore, let us keep the peace. Not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again. Death no longer has dominion over him. The death that he died, he died to sin once for all. But the life he lives, he lives to God. So also consider yourself dead to sin and alive to God and Jesus Christ our Lord. Hallelujah. Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruit of those who have fallen asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. Hallelujah.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, Addie. Our psalms appointed for this morning are number sixty one and number sixty-two. I'm going to ask Martha and Jill to lead our psalm. Martha, would you start?
SPEAKER_11Yeah, my cry, oh God. And listen to my prayer.
SPEAKER_09I call upon you from the ends of the earth with heaviness in my heart. Set me upon the rock that is higher than I.
SPEAKER_11For you have been my refuge. A strong tower against the enemy.
SPEAKER_09I will dwell in your house forever. I will take refuge under the cover of your wings.
SPEAKER_11You have granted me the heritage of those who fear your name.
SPEAKER_09Add length of days to our ruler's life with years extending over many generations.
SPEAKER_11Let our ruler set in tone before God forever. Wash over by your love and faithfulness.
SPEAKER_09So will I always sing the praise of your name, and day by day I will fulfill my vows.
SPEAKER_11From God comes my salvation.
SPEAKER_09God alone is my rock and my salvation. I stronghold so that I shall not be greatly shaken.
SPEAKER_11How long will you assail me to crush me all of you together? As if you were a leaning fence and a topping wall.
SPEAKER_09They seek only to bring me down from my place of honor. Lies are their chief delight.
SPEAKER_11But in their hearts they cut.
SPEAKER_09Truly, my hope is in God.
SPEAKER_11God alone is my rock and my salvation. My stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken.
SPEAKER_09And God is my safety and my honor. God is my strong rock and my refuge.
SPEAKER_11Who are your hearts before God, who is our refuge?
SPEAKER_09Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath. Even those of low estate cannot be trusted.
SPEAKER_11On his skills, they are lighter than a breath. All of them together.
SPEAKER_09Put no trust in exhortation. In robbery, take no empty pride. Though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it.
SPEAKER_11That power belongs to God.
SPEAKER_09Steadfast love is yours, O Lord. For you repay all people according to their deeds.
SPEAKER_11Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_09Amen.
SPEAKER_01That is a scapegoat or William Holman Hunt's depiction of a scapegoat in his painting. Our first reading comes from Leviticus chapter 16, verses 20 through 34. Chad, would you lead this?
SPEAKER_00When Aaron has finished atoning for the holy place and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat. Then Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel and all their transgressions, all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and sending it away into the wilderness by means of someone designated for the task. The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to a barren region, and the goat shall be set free in the wilderness. Then Aaron shall enter the tent of meeting, and shall take off the linen vestments that he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there. He shall bathe his body in water in a holy place and put on his vestments. Then he shall come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, making atonement for himself and for the people. The fat of the sin offering he shall turn into smoke on the altar. The one who sets the goat free for Azazel shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward may come into the camp. The bull of the sin offering and the goat of the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall be taken outside the camp. Their skin and their flesh and their dung shall be consumed in fire. The one who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward may come into the camp. This shall be a statute to you for ever. In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall deny yourselves and shall do no work, neither the citizen nor the alien who resides among you. For on this day atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you. From all your sins you shall be clean before the Lord. It is a Sabbath of complete rest to you. You shall deny yourselves. It is a statute for ever. The priest who is anointed and consecrated as priest in his father's place shall make atonement wearing the linen vestments, the holy vestments. He shall make atonement for the sanctuary, and shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the people of Israel once in the year for all their sins. And Moses did as the Lord had commanded him. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_01Thanks be to God. Thank you, Chen. Our first canticle is a song of pilgrimage, Mother Unjo.
SPEAKER_06Before I ventured forth, even when I was married, I saw twist them openly in my prayer, in the four courts of the temple I must firm. And I will seek her to the end. From the first blossom to early fruit. She has been the daylight of my heart. My foot has kept only to the true path. Diligently from my youth have I pursued him. I inclined my little and received him. I found for myself much wisdom and became adapted. To the one who gives me wisdom will I give glory, for I have resolved to live according to her way. From the beginning I gained courage from her, therefore I will not be forsaken. In my inmost being I have been stirred to seek her. Therefore have I gained a good possession. As my reward, the Almighty has given me the gift of language, and with it I will offer praise to God.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, Mother Angel. The thief in the night. Patricia, would you lead this for us?
SPEAKER_05Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you knew you do not need to have anything written to you, for you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say there is peace and security, then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor kings, labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape. But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief, for you are all children of light and children of the day. We are not of the light or of the darkness, we are not of the night or of the darkness. So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. For those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. And since we belong to the day, let us be sober and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live with him. Therefore, encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_01Thanks be to God. Thank you, Patricia. Our first canticle is a our second canticle is a song of faith, Mother Angel.
SPEAKER_06Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ. By divine mercy, we have a new birth into a living hope. Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. We have an inheritance that is imperishable in heaven. The ransom that was paid to free us, wasn't it paid in silver gold, but in the precious blood of Christ, the man with not spot to mistake. God raised Jesus from the dead and gave him glory, so that we might have faith and hope in God.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, Mother Angel. If you think that looks hard to read, or perhaps in a different language, you'd be right. That's the Lord's Prayer in Lakota. Deacon Elizabeth, would you lead this?
SPEAKER_10Sure. Jesus said, When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then in this way. Our Father in heaven, our Lord be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we also forgive our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your father forgive your trespasses. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_01Thanks be to God. Thank you, Deacon. And now the Apostles' Creed. Carol, would you lead us in the creed?
SPEAKER_07I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried, he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again, he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Amen. Thank you, Carol. And now the prayers begin with our Lord's Prayer. Jacqueline, would you lead us in the Lord's Prayer and then we'll read the suffrages? The Lord be with you and also with you.
SPEAKER_02Let us pray. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Help us, O God, our Saviour.
SPEAKER_02Deliver us and forgive us our sins.
SPEAKER_01Look upon your congregation.
SPEAKER_02Give to your people the blessing of peace. Declare your glory among the nations and your wonders among all peoples.
SPEAKER_01Do not let the oppressed be shamed and turned away.
SPEAKER_02Never forget the lives of your poor.
SPEAKER_01Continue your loving kindness to those who know you.
SPEAKER_02And your favor to those who are true of heart.
SPEAKER_01Satisfy us by your loving kindness in the morning.
SPEAKER_02So shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, Jacqueline. Our saints of the day are the martyrs of the Reformation era. This is a depiction of that. The martyrs of the Reformation era were individuals, both Protestant and Catholic, who died for their religious beliefs during the period of religious upheaval and reformation in Europe, particularly in the 16th century. These martyrs faced persecution and execution often by burning at the stake or other cruel methods, for refusing to renounce their faith, or for holding beliefs deemed heretical by the dominant religious authority. Heresy was often cited for the reason that they had to be put to death. Many of these martyrs are now recognized as saints by their respective denominations. Many of their names we recognize with their own feast days, like Thomas Cranmer, Hugh Latimer, etc. Now, two prayers the collect of the day for the martyrs of the Reformation era and a collect for the nation. Deacon Diana, would you lead us? In these two prayers.
SPEAKER_04Almighty and most merciful God, give to your church that peace which the world cannot give, and grant that those who have been divided on earth may be reconciled in heaven and share together the vision of your glory. Through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory, to serve you in freedom and in peace. Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Amen. Thank you, Deacon. And now it's time for our report on military news called They Have Names. It was started in 2007 by our late honorary deacon, Clint Gilliland, a retired Navy medic. They have names. Our service members at home and abroad, they're in danger from the minute that they take the oath. We tell of their heroism if there are casualties, and we speak their names. We pray for all of them and we pray to God for peace in every nation. And here's where things stand this week. We have no deaths in war to report. That's a good thing. Although we do have a story. We have a couple of service members that are missing. Two U.S. service members are missing in southwest Morocco after taking part in an annual multinational military exercise in the North African country. The United States Africa Command, AFRICOM, said Sunday, May the second, so just a couple of days ago, the service members are excuse me, the service members are U.S. soldiers who went missing while they were on a hike, a U.S. defense official told the Associated Press on condition of animity, as they were not allowed to speak publicly about the issue. They were not actively taking part in any training. The day's exercises had concluded, and from our understanding, they went out on a recreational hike, the official said. Their names have not been released and in the photo above, the U.S. and the Morocco, Moroccan military forces take part in the 20th edition of the African Lion Military Exercise in Tantan, south of Agjadir, Morocco, in 2024. AFRICON said the U.S. and Morocco and other countries participating in the African Lion Exercise have launched a search and rescue operation, and the instrument, the incident remains under investigation. The search is ongoing. It's unusual for a couple of our soldiers to just go missing. Sometimes they go AWOL, sometimes they're missing in action, but this was not action, and this was just a hike in the country that they were just visiting for a little while for training exercises. So pray for our military, pray for those two soldiers that are missing and pray that they are found. And so we pray for those that we love on active duty, all of them, the two above, plus we name these Father David, Logan, Arnold, Dudley, Raleigh, Janelle, and Amanda and Rob, a married couple. Almighty God, we come into your gracious care in keeping all of the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace, strengthen them in their trials and their temptations, and give them the courage to face the perils which beset them, and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be, through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen. And they collect for peace. O God, the author of peace and the lover of concord, to know you as eternal life, and to serve you as perfect freedom. Defend us your humble servants in all assaults of our enemies, that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And that's our report, for they have names. Let's remember to pray for our service members at home and abroad, and support those who keep their home fires burning. We'll continue with the prayer for the mission of the church. I'm going to ask Michael Brown to lead this, and then I'll bless the Lord and bless us.
SPEAKER_08Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross, that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace. So clothe us in your spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you for the honor of your name. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Let us bless the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia.
SPEAKER_08Thanks be to God, hallelujah, hallelujah.
SPEAKER_01The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all ever and more. Life is short, and we don't have much time to gladden the hearts of those that make this journey with us. So be swift to love and make haste to be kind. And the blessing of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be with you now and remain with you always. Amen.
SPEAKER_11Amen.
SPEAKER_01And that is morning prayer on this Tuesday. Thank you for coming to pray today. Wherever you go, take that love of Jesus that lives inside of you, that light. Shine that light into the world. We all need that light right now. Hope to see you back with us again tomorrow, safe and sound. And I just have to remember how to stop the recording because it's like four steps.
