Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Roy, the Vicar of the Daily Office Network. I'm an ordained Episcopal priest in the Diocese of Minnesota. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis to pray morning prayer Monday through Friday at 7 and 9 a.m. Eastern time. We use the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer as our guide. We mix in artwork, a news story, we have music at the end. We come from several different faith traditions in several different countries. All are welcome here, where we do our best to exercise tolerance and decency with one another. Now let's settle in and begin morning prayer. Today is Friday, it is the 8th of May, 2026. In the life of the church, we celebrate the Saint Julian of Norwich, a mystic and a theologian who died in the year 1417. The Daily Office Network is podcasting. You can find us on Apple or Spotify by searching our keywords Daily Office Network. Let's begin. The mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but only until the one who now restrains it is removed. And then the lawless one will be revealed. Photograph of Sarah Maluly, the Archbishop of Canterbury and Pope Leo XIV. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Maluly, preached on April the 26th during a choral even song at Rome's St. Paul's within the walls about what the church is called to be in an increasingly polarized world, a place where hospitality is essential to Christian witness, not simply an option. Malulli, the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, and the first woman to hold the office in its 1400-year history, met with Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born Pope on April the 27th. The pilgrimage's purpose was to strengthen Anglican-Roman Catholic relations through prayer, personal encounter, and formal theological dialogue. Moreover, it aims to deepen the bonds of communion, affirm a shared witness, and encourage ongoing collaboration at both global and local levels, according to the Lambeth Palace press release. Malulli's Philadelphia visit also comes at St. Paul's Within the Walls, the first non-Catholic church built within Rome's ancient walls, prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary next month in June. On this day the Lord has acted, we will rejoice and be glad in it. Addie, would you lead us in the invitatory and the Psalter this morning? Lord, open our lips, and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
SPEAKER_02Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning and now, and will be forever. Amen. Hallelujah. Christ our Passover. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore, let us keep the feast, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ being raised from the dead will never die again. Death no longer has dominion over him. The death he die, he died to sin was for all. But the life he lives, he lives to God. So also consider yourself dead to sin and alive to God and Jesus Christ our Lord. Hallelujah. Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruit of those who have fallen asleep. But since by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. Hallelujah.
SPEAKER_00Thank you, Eddie. Our psalm appointed for this morning is a portion of Psalm number 106, verses 1 through 18. I'm going to ask Jill and Martha to lead our psalm. Jill, would you start?
SPEAKER_10Hallelujah. Give thanks to the Lord who is good, whose mercy endures forever.
SPEAKER_08Can anyone declare the mighty acts of the Lord or show forth all God's praise?
SPEAKER_10Happy are those who act with justice and always do what is right.
SPEAKER_08Remember me, O Lord, with the favor you have for your people, and visit me with your saving help.
SPEAKER_10That I may see the prosperity of your elect and be glad with the gladness of your people, that I may glory with your inheritance.
SPEAKER_08We have seen as our ancestors did. We have done wrong and dealt wickedly.
SPEAKER_10In Egypt they did not consider your marvelous works, nor remember the abundance of your love. They defied the Most High at the Red Sea.
SPEAKER_08But you saved them for your name's sake. To make your power known.
SPEAKER_10The Lord rebuked the Red Sea and it dried up. God led them through the deep as through a desert.
SPEAKER_08The Lord saved them from the hand of those who hated them and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
SPEAKER_10The waters covered their oppressors. Not one of them was left.
SPEAKER_08And sang out songs of praise.
SPEAKER_10But they soon forgot the deeds of the Lord and did not await divine counsel.
SPEAKER_08A craving seized them in the wilderness, and they put God to the test in the desert.
SPEAKER_10God gave them what they asked and sent leanness into their soul.
SPEAKER_08And Era, the Holy One of the Lord.
SPEAKER_10The earth opened and swallowed Dayton and covered the company of Abram.
SPEAKER_08Fire blazed up against their company, and flames devoured the wicked.
SPEAKER_10Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_00Amen. Thank you, Jill and Martha. This is by Moritz Daniel Oppenheim from eighteen eighty. Shabbat or Pentecost culminating in the Feast of Weeks. Patricia, would you lead this?
SPEAKER_05The Lord spoke to Moses, spake, saying, Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, These are the appointed festivals of the Lord that you shall proclaim as holy convocations, my appointed festivals. Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work. It is a Sabbath to the Lord throughout your settlements. These are the appointed festivals of the Lord, the holy convocations which you shall celebrate at the time appointed for them in the first month. In the first month, on the 14th day of the month, at twilight, there shall be a Passover offering to the Lord. And on the 15th day of the same month is the festival of unleavened bread to the Lord. Seven days you shall not eat, you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall have a holy convocation. You shall not work at your occupations. On the seventh day there shall be a holy convocation. You shall not work at your occupations. The Lord spoke to Moses, speak to the people of Israel and say to them, when you enter the land that I am giving you and you reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest. He shall raise the sheaf before the Lord that you may find acceptance. On the day after the Sabbath, the priest shall raise it. On the day when you raise the sheaf, you shall offer a lamb a year old without a blemish as a burnt offering to the Lord. And the grain offering with it shall be two months of an ether of choice, of choice flour mixed with oil, an offering by fire of pleasing odour to the Lord. And the drink offering with it shall be of wine, one fourth of a hymn. You shall eat no bread or parched grain or fresh ears until that very day, until you have brought the offering of your to your God, the offering of your God. It is a statute forever throughout the generations in all your settlements. And from the day after the Sabbath, from the day in which you bring the sheaf of the elevation, sheaf of the elevation offering, you shall count off seven weeks. Then you shall present an offering of new grain to the Lord. You shall bring from your settlements two loaves of bread as an elevation offering, each made of two tenths of an ephire. They shall be of choice flour baked with lemon as first fruits of the Lord. You shall present with the bread seven rams a year old without blemish, one young bull and two rams. They shall be a burnt offering to the Lord, along with their grain offering and their drink offerings, on an offering by fire of pleasing odor to the Lord. You shall also offer one male goat for an offering, and two male lambs a year old as a sacrifice of well-being. The priest shall raise them with the bread of the first fruits of an elevate as an elevation offering before the Lord, together with two lambs. They shall be holy to the Lord for the priests. On that same day you shall make propagation, you shall hold a holy convocation, you shall not work at your occupations. This is a statute forever in all your settlements throughout your generations. When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest, you shall leave them for the poor and for the alien. I am the Lord your God, the word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_00Thanks be to God. Thank you, Patricia. That was a very long reading. It's well done. Jacqueline, would you lead this one for us?
SPEAKER_03I will take you from among all nations and gather you from all lands to bring you home. I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and purify you from false guards and uncleanness. A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit put within you. I will take the stone heart from your chest and give you a heart of flesh. I will help you walk in my laws and cherish my commandments and do them. You shall be my people, and I will be your God.
SPEAKER_00Thank you, Jacqueline. A stained glass window at St. Paul's in Brunswick, Maine. Our second reading comes from Second Thessalonians chapter two verses one through seventeen. Deacon Elizabeth, would you lead this? I'm sorry, not Deacon Elizabeth. Paul, would you lead this? That's what I get for thinking ahead.
SPEAKER_07As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way, for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so called God or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? And you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed when his time comes. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but only until the one who only until the one who now restrains it is removed, and then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will destroy with the breath of his mouth, annihilating him by the manifestation of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is apparent in the working of Satan, who uses all power, signs, lying wonders, and every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refuse to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion, leading them to believe what is false, so that all who have not believed the truth, but took pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned. But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit, and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. Now may your Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_00Thanks be to God. Thank you, Paul. Our next canticle is a song of our adoption. Jacqueline, would you lead this one as well?
SPEAKER_03Blessed are you, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. For you have blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. Before the world was made, you chose us to be yours in Christ, that we should be holy and blameless before you. You destined us for adoption as your children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of your will, to the praise of your glorious grace, that you have freely given us in the beloved. In you we have redemption through the blood of Christ, the forgiveness of our sins, according to the riches of your grace, which you have lavished upon us. You have made known to us in all wisdom and insight the mystery of your will, according to your good pleasure, which you set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather together all things in Christ, things in heaven and things on earth.
SPEAKER_00Thank you, Jacqueline. Ask and it will be given you. Search and you will find, knock, and the door will be opened for you. Now, Deacon Elizabeth, would you lead this?
SPEAKER_06Sure. Jesus said, Do not judge so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make, you'll be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbor's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, let me take the speck out of your eye, while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and when you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor's eye. Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your paths before the swine, or they will trample them under foot, and turn and mull you. Ask and it will be given you. Search and you'll find. Knock and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone, or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snack? If you then who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your father in heaven give good things to those who ask him? In everything do to others as you would have them do to you, for this is the law and the prophets, the word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_00Thanks be to God. Thank you, deacon. And now the apostles' creed. John R., would you lead us in the creed?
SPEAKER_04I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who is conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again, he ascended into heaven, and he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Amen.
SPEAKER_00Thank you, John. And now the prayers begin with our Lord's Prayer. Marcia, would you lead us in the Lord's Prayer? And then we'll read the suffrages. Marcia, are you with us? There we go.
SPEAKER_11The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_00And also with you.
SPEAKER_11Let us pray. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily pray. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_00Help us, O God our Savior.
SPEAKER_11Deliver us and forgive us our sins.
SPEAKER_00Look upon your congregation.
SPEAKER_11Give to your people the blessing of peace.
SPEAKER_00Declare your glory among the nations.
SPEAKER_11And your wonders among all peoples.
SPEAKER_00Do not let the oppressed be shamed and turned away.
SPEAKER_11Never forget the lives of your poor.
SPEAKER_00Continue your loving kindness to those who know you.
SPEAKER_11And your favor to those who are true of heart.
SPEAKER_00Satisfy us by your loving kindness in the morning.
SPEAKER_11So shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.
SPEAKER_00Thank you, Marcia. Nycon of our saint of the day, Julian of Norwich. Picture England in the Middle Ages. A young woman of 30 is stricken by a terrible illness, and she's given last rites to prepare her for heaven. Six days she suffers in agony. And then on the seventh day, she receives 15 visions of Christ's passion, and the illness leaves her. She goes straight to her parish church and never leaves it. They eventually have to build an extra room for her. She writes down what she's seen and then spends another 15 years trying to sort it all out. At last she does. Her writing uses he and she interchangeably. And now two prayers. The collect of the day for Julian of Norwich, a mystic and a theologian who died in 1417, and they collect for Fridays. Carol, would you lead us in these two prayers?
SPEAKER_09Julian revelations of your nurturing and sustaining love. Move your hearts like hers to seek you above all things for giving us yourself. You give us all. Amen. Almighty God, whose most dear son went not up to joy, but first he suffered pain and entered not into glory because he was crucified before he was crucified. Mercifully grant that we walking in the way of the cross may find it none other than the way of life and peace. Through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.
SPEAKER_00Amen. Thank you, Carol. We'll continue with the colic for the mission of the church. I'm going to ask Robert to lead this, and then I'll bless the Lord and bless us.
SPEAKER_01Oh God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you. Bring the nations into your fold. Pour out your spirit upon all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
SPEAKER_00Let us bless the Lord.
SPEAKER_01Thanks be to God. Alleluia, hallelujah.
SPEAKER_00Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing. To the only God, our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord before all time, now and forever. And the blessing of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be upon you now and remain with you always. Amen.
SPEAKER_08Amen.
SPEAKER_00That's morning prayer on this Friday. Thank you for coming to pray today. Wherever you go, take that love of Jesus that lives inside of you, that love that's in your heart. Share that, Jesus, with the world. Show that, Jesus, to the world. Hope to see you back with us safe on Monday.
