Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Roy, the Vicar of the Daily Office Network. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis to pray morning prayer. We use the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer as our guide. We mix an artwork, a news story. We usually have a video at the end. We come from several different faith traditions in several different countries. All are welcome here where we do our best to exercise tolerance and decency with one another. Now let's settle in and begin morning prayer. It is Friday, the 15th of May, 2026. In the life of the church, our saint is Pecomius of Tabanesi, a monastic who died in the year 348. It is also Police Officer Memorial Day in the United States. If you're looking for our podcast, you can find us on Apple or Spotify by searching Daily Office Network. Let's begin. We are what has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. Photograph of a mother and a baby. A miracle baby was born twice. After undergoing a groundbreaking surgery to fix a rare and often deadly condition, the family of eight-month-old Cassian, who is pictured above, is grateful. At 19 weeks pregnant, the Jaubert family received the devastating news that their second child had a rare condition called congenital high airway obstruction syndrome, known as chaos. It's characterized by a blocking of the airway, causing fluid to become trapped in an unborn baby's lungs. The lungs get bigger, tighter, more pressure. It begins to squeeze the baby's heart. Most of these babies die, said Dr. Emmanuel Velastos, director of the Orlando Health Women's Institute Fetal Care Center. But this miracle has a different ending. At 25 weeks, a C-section was performed, allowing just the head and the arms to be delivered so that a life-saving surgery could be performed. The baby was placed back in the womb post-surgery, and mom stayed in the hospital until the hospital delivery. It's an interesting story, and there is a story link. You can go there and read the story yourself. Addie, would you lead us in the invitatory and the Psalter this morning? Lord, open our lips, and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
SPEAKER_11Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. Therefore, let us keep the peace. Not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ being raised from the dead will never die again. Death no longer has dominion over him. The death that he got, he died to sin once for all. But the life he lives, he lives to God. So also consider yourself dead to sin and alive to God and Jesus Christ our Lord. Hallelujah. Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruit of those who have fallen asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all died, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. Hallelujah.
SPEAKER_03Thank you, everybody. Our psalms appointed for this morning are Psalm number 85 and Psalm number 86. I'm going to ask Jill and Jacqueline to lead our Psalm. Jill, would you start?
SPEAKER_09You have been gracious to your land, O Lord. You have restored the good fortune of Jacob.
SPEAKER_02You have forgiven the iniquity of your people and blotted out all their sins.
SPEAKER_09You have withdrawn all your fury and turned yourself from your wrathful indignation.
SPEAKER_02Restore us, then, O God, our Saviour. Let your anger depart from us.
SPEAKER_09Will you be displeased with us forever? Will you prolong your anger from age to age?
SPEAKER_02Will you not give us life again, that your people may rejoice in you?
SPEAKER_09Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.
SPEAKER_02I will listen, O Lord God, to what you are saying, for you are speaking peace to your faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to you.
SPEAKER_09Truly, your salvation is very near to those who fear you, that your glory may dwell in our land.
SPEAKER_02Mercy and truth have met together. Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
SPEAKER_09Truth shall spring up from the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
SPEAKER_02O Lord, you will indeed grant prosperity, and our land will yield its increase.
SPEAKER_09Righteousness shall go before you, and peace shall be a pathway for your feet.
SPEAKER_02Bow down your ear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and in misery.
SPEAKER_09Keep watch over my life for I am faithful. Save your servant, for I put my trust in you.
SPEAKER_02Be merciful to me, O Lord, for you are my God. I call upon you all the day long.
SPEAKER_09Gladden the soul of your servant for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
SPEAKER_02For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, and great is your love toward all who call upon you.
SPEAKER_09Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer and attend to the voice of my supplications.
SPEAKER_02In the time of my trouble I will call upon you, for you will answer me.
SPEAKER_09Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord, nor anything like your works.
SPEAKER_02All nations you have made will come and worship you, O Lord, and glorify your name.
SPEAKER_09For you are great, you do wondrous things, and you alone are God.
SPEAKER_02Teach me your way, O Lord, and I will walk in your truth. Knit my heart to you, that I may fear your name.
SPEAKER_09I will thank you, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and glorify your name for evermore.
SPEAKER_02For great is your love towards me, you have delivered me from the nevermost pit.
SPEAKER_09The arrogant rise up against me, O God, and a violent mob seeks my life. They have not set you before their eyes.
SPEAKER_02But you, O Lord, are gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and full of kindness and truth.
SPEAKER_09Turn to me and have mercy upon me. Give me your strength, give your strength to your servant and save the child of your handmaid.
SPEAKER_02Show me a sign of your favor, so that those who hate me may see it and be ashamed. Because you, O Lord, have helped me and comforted me.
SPEAKER_09Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_03Amen. Thank you, Jill and Jacqueline, for that reading. An icon of Saint Hannah. Her scroll says, My heart exalts in the Lord. Hannah, the mother of Samuel, Mary's song echoes her. Our reading is from 1 Samuel chapter two verses one through ten. Chad, would you lead this?
SPEAKER_00Hannah prayed and said, My heart exalts in the Lord, my strength is exalted in my God, my mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in my victory. There is no holy one like the Lord, no one besides you. There is no rock like our God. Talk no more so very proudly. Let not arrogance come from your mouth, for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry are fat with spoil. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. The Lord kills and brings to life, he brings down to Sheol and raises up. The Lord makes poor and makes rich. He brings low, he also exalts. He raises up the poor from the dust, he lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and on them he has set the world. He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might does one prevail. The Lord, his adversary shall be shattered, the most high will thunder in heaven, the Lord will judge the ends of the earth, he will give strength to his king, and exalt the power of his anointed. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_03Thanks be to God. Thank you, Chad. If you have wondered where our canticles come from, wonder no more. They come right from Scripture. Speaking of canticles, our first one is a song of Ezekiel. Mother Angel, would you lead this?
SPEAKER_06I will take you from among all the nations, and gather you from the lands to bring you home. I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and purify you from false gods and uncleanness. And in the heart I will give you, and a new spirit put within you. I will take the stone heart from your chest and give you a heart of flesh. I will help you walk in my laws and cherish my commandments and do them. You shall be my people, and I will be your God.
SPEAKER_03Thank you, Mother Angel. The cross is the medicine of the world. That's the sign above the guest house entrance at Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, New York. And our founding vicar, Josh Thomas, took this picture. Paul, would you lead this?
SPEAKER_07You were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. But God who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead through our trespass through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved, and raised up with him and seated us and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness towards us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing. It is the gift of God, not the result of works, so that no one may boast, for we are what He has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life, the word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_03Thanks be to God. Thank you, Paul. Our next canticle is a song of our adoption, Mother Angel.
SPEAKER_06Blessed are you, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for you have blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. Before the world was made, you chose us to be yours in Christ, that we should be holy and blameless before you. You destined us for adoption as your children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of your will, to the praise of your glorious grace, that you have really given us in the beloved. In you we have redemption through the blood of Christ, the forgiveness of our sins, according to the riches of your grace, which you have lavished upon us. You have made known to us in all wisdom and inside the mystery of your will, according to your good pleasure, which you set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather together all things in Christ, things in heaven and things on earth.
SPEAKER_03Thank you, Mother Angel. Two houses, one built on rock and one built on sand. Deacon Diana, would you lead this?
SPEAKER_04Then I will declare to them, I never knew you. Go away from me, you evildoers. Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house. But it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who heard hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was its fall. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_03Thanks be to God. Thank you, Deacon. And now the Apostle's Creed, John R., would you lead us in the creed?
SPEAKER_01I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he came again to judge, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
SPEAKER_03Amen. Thank you, John. The prayers begin with our Lord's Prayer. Carol, would you lead us in the Lord's Prayer? And then we'll read the suffrages.
SPEAKER_10The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_03And also with you.
SPEAKER_10Let us pray. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_03Help us, O God our Savior.
SPEAKER_10Deliver us and forgive us our sins.
SPEAKER_03Look upon your congregation.
SPEAKER_10Give to your people the blessing of peace.
SPEAKER_03Declare your glory among the nations.
SPEAKER_10And do wonders among all peoples.
SPEAKER_03Do not let the oppressed be shamed and turned away.
SPEAKER_10Never forget the lives of your poor.
SPEAKER_03Continue your loving kindness to those who know you.
SPEAKER_10And your favor to those who are true of heart.
SPEAKER_03Satisfy us by your loving kindness in the morning.
SPEAKER_10So shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.
SPEAKER_03Thank you, Carol. An icon of our saint of the day, Bacomius. As the cops copts refer to him in regard as the founder uh and he is regarded as the founder of Conobitic monasticism, in which members lived together in community rather than individually as hermits. He was the author of the first formal monastic rule of life. By the time he died, he attracted thousands of monks, men, and women within a generation. This form of monasticism spread from Egypt to Palestine to Turkey and into Europe. Our saint of the day. Deacon Elizabeth, would you take the first two? The uh collect of the day and the uh collect for Fridays, and then I'll take the police officer's prayer.
SPEAKER_05Sure. Set us free, O God, from all false desires, vain ambitions, and all that would separate us from you, that like your servant the cumulus, we might give ourselves fully to a life of discipleship, seeking you alone and serving those whom you have given us to serve. All this we ask through Jesus Christ, our only mediator and advocate. Amen. Almighty God, whose most dear son, went out to joy, but first he suffered pain and entered not into glory before he was crucified. Mercifully grant that we walking in the way of the cross may find it none other than the way of life and peace through Jesus Christ, your son, our Lord. Amen.
SPEAKER_03Amen. Thank you, Deacon. In our Law Enforcement Officers Prayer, today is Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Day, and this is Law Enforcement Officer Week when we recognize those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Almighty God, whose great power and eternal wisdom embraces the universe, watch over all the members of our law enforcement community, protect them from harm in the performance of their duty. Help them, we pray, keep our streets safe, our homes safe day and night. We commend them to your loving care because their duty is dangerous. Grant them strength and courage in their daily assignments. Heavenly Father, protect these brave men and women. Grant them your almighty protection. Unite them safely with their families after their duty has ended. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
SPEAKER_05Amen.
SPEAKER_03And now is our prayer. We'll continue with the prayer for the mission of the church. I'm going to ask Patricia to lead this, and then I'll bless the Lord and bless us.
SPEAKER_08Excuse me. Oh God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you. Bring the nations into your fold. Pour out your spirit upon all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
SPEAKER_03Let us bless the Lord. Alleluia, Alleluia.
SPEAKER_08Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia.
SPEAKER_03Now to Him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of His glory with rejoicing. To the only God, our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord before all time, now and forever. And the blessing of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be with you now and remain with you always. Amen. And that is morning prayer on this Friday. Thank you for coming to pray today. Wherever you go, take that love of Jesus that you carry with you, the Jesus in your heart. Share that Jesus with the world. Show that Jesus to the world. We all need a little more Jesus. Hope to see you back with us on Monday, safe and sound.
