Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Roy, the vicar of the Daily Office Network. I'm an ordained priest in the Diocese of Minnesota. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis to pray morning prayer Monday through Friday. We use the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer as our guide. We mix in artwork, a news story. We come from several different faith traditions in several different countries. All are welcome here, where we do our best to exercise tolerance and decency with one another. Now let's begin morning prayer. Today is Monday, the Monday after the Ascension Day. It is the 18th of May. You can find our podcast by going to Apple or Spotify and searching Daily Office Network. Be strong and courageous, for you shall put this people in possession of the land that I swore to their ancestors to give them. Supporters of President William Ruto, who is seeking a second term in the elections next year, uses the phrase to describe the political violence that authorities will not tolerate. Opposition figures use it to condemn what they see as Ruto's aggressive and underhanded campaign tactics. At times it can seem as if goonism is up against goonism, an unwelcome turn of events in this East African nation where the contest for political power is becoming ever more vigorous and tinged with a sense of danger. In the photograph above, Kenya's president William Ruto holds up a ceremonial sword as he was sworn into office at a ceremony back in 2022 in Nairobi. Pray for our brothers and sisters in Kenya. Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Patty, would you lead us in the invitatory and this altar this morning? Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

SPEAKER_10

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. Therefore, let us keep the peace. Not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened word of sincerity and truth. Death no longer has dominion over him. The death that he died, he died to sin once for all. But the life he lives, he lives to God. So also consider yourself dead to sin and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Hallelujah.

SPEAKER_05

Thank you, Eddie.

SPEAKER_10

The first fruit of those who have fallen asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. Hallelujah.

SPEAKER_05

Thank you, Addie. Our psalm appointing for this morning is a portion of Psalm number 89, verses 1 through 18. I'm going to ask Martha and Jill to lead our psalm. Martha, would you start?

SPEAKER_11

Your love, O Lord, forever will I sing. From age to age, my mother, we proclaim your faithfulness.

SPEAKER_03

For I am persuaded that your love is established forever. You have set your faithfulness firmly in the heavens.

SPEAKER_11

I have made a covenant with my chosen one. I have sworn an oath to the myself.

SPEAKER_03

I will establish your line forever and preserve your throne for all generations.

SPEAKER_11

And to your fruitfulness in the assembly of the holy ones.

SPEAKER_03

For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord? Who is like the Lord among the gods?

SPEAKER_11

God is much to be feared in the counsel of the holy ones. Great and terrible are all to circle around.

SPEAKER_03

Who is like you, Lord God of hosts? Almighty Lord, your faithfulness is all around you.

SPEAKER_11

You rule the region of the sea and still the searching of his waves.

SPEAKER_03

You have crushed Rahab in the deep with a deadly wound. You have scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.

SPEAKER_11

Yours are the heavens. The eye also is yours. You lay the foundations of the world and all that is in it.

SPEAKER_03

You have made the north and the south. Tabor and Herman rejoice in your name.

SPEAKER_11

You have a mighty arm. Strong is your hand, and high is your right hand.

SPEAKER_03

Righteousness and justice are the foundations of your throne. Love and truth go before your face.

SPEAKER_11

They walk, O Lord, in the light of your presence.

SPEAKER_03

They rejoice daily in your name. They are jubilant in your righteousness.

SPEAKER_11

For you are the glory of their strength. And by your favor, our might is assaulted.

SPEAKER_03

Truly, the Lord is our ruler. The Holy One of Israel is our sovereign.

SPEAKER_11

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_10

Amen.

SPEAKER_05

Thank you, Martha and Jill. It says holy and righteous. Joshua. Joshua, Moses' second in command, led the conquest of Canaan. Our reading is from Joshua chapter one verses one through nine. Chad, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_01

After the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord, the Lord spoke to Joshua, son of Nun, Moses' assistant, saying, My servant Moses is dead. Now proceed to cross the Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the Israelites. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, as I promised to Moses. From the wilderness and the Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the great sea in the west shall be your territory. No one shall be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not fail you or forsake you. Be strong and courageous, for you shall put this people in possession of the land that I swore to their ancestors to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to act in accordance with all the law that my servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, so that you may be successful wherever you go. This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth, you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful. I hereby command you, be strong and courageous, do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_05

Thanks be to God. Thank you, Chan. Our first canticle is a song of Hannah. Mother Unjell, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_09

My heart exalts in you, oh God. My triumph song is lifted in you. My mouth derides my enemies, for I rejoice in your salvation. There is none holy like you, nor any round to be compared to you, my God. Do not take up prideful words or speak in America. Only God is knowing and with his emotions. The bubble mighty hunger again. The little swan swam. The channel swam and humble swam and summon fall. God destroys and brings to life. Kill us down and raises a mouth. Gives wealth or takes it away. Humbles and dignifies. God raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the sheep to make them sit with the rulers and inherit a place of honor. For the pillars of the earth are gods on which the whole earth is founded.

SPEAKER_05

Thank you, Mother Ungel. A few years back. Paul, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_02

This is the reason that I, Paul, am a prisoner for Christ Jesus, for the sake of you Gentiles. Or surely you have already heard of the commission of God's grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations the mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. That is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant, according to the gift of God's grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that He has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. I pray therefore that you may not lose heart over my sufferings for you. They are your glory. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_05

Thanks be to God. Thank you, Paul. Our second canticle is a song of Christ's humility. Mother Angel.

SPEAKER_09

In heaven and on the earth and unto the And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

SPEAKER_05

Thank you, Mother Angel. This is a company commander leading his troops in Vietnam. I say to one, come and he comes, and to another, go and he goes. Deacon Diana, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_00

When Jesus entered entered Capernaum, the centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, Lord, my servant is lying at home, paralyzed, in terrible distress. And he said to him, I will come and cure him. The centurion answered, Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, Go, and he goes, and to another, come, and he comes, and to my slave, do this, and the slave does it. When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west, and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And to the centurion Jesus said, Go, let it be done for you according to your faith. And the servant was healed in that hour. When Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and began to serve him. That evening they brought to him many who were possessed with demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word, and cured all who were sick. This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah. He took out our infirmities and bore our diseases. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_05

Thanks be to God. Thank you, deacon. And now the Apostle's Creed. Robert, would you lead us in the creed?

SPEAKER_07

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

SPEAKER_05

Amen. Thank you, Robert. And now the prayers begin with our Lord's Prayer. Patricia, would you lead us in the Lord's Prayer and then we'll read the suffrages.

SPEAKER_08

The Lord be with you.

SPEAKER_05

And also with you.

SPEAKER_08

Let us pray. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. The kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Govern and uphold them now and always.

SPEAKER_05

Day by day we bless you.

SPEAKER_08

We praise your name forever.

SPEAKER_05

Lord, keep us from all sin today.

SPEAKER_08

Have mercy on us, Lord. Have mercy.

SPEAKER_05

Lord, show us your love and mercy.

SPEAKER_08

For we put our trust in you.

SPEAKER_05

In you, Lord, is our hope.

SPEAKER_08

And we shall never hope in vain.

SPEAKER_05

Thank you, Patricia. This is a kite with Jesus' likeness on it. I thought it'd be interesting if you could get a string long enough, maybe put it up in the clouds, and you could see Jesus in the clouds. It's called an ascension kite, up, up and away. Now, three prayers. The colic of the day for the seventh Sunday of Easter, the Sunday after Ascension Day, a colic for the renewal of life and the Anglican Rosary Prayer. Morgan, would you lead us in these three prayers?

SPEAKER_06

God, the King of Glory, you have exalted your only Son, Jesus Christ, with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven. Do not leave us comfortless. Send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. O God, the King Eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning. Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace, that, having done your will with cheerfulness during the day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Dear Lord Jesus, help me do the things I should, to be to others kind and good, and in all I do or say, grow more loving every day.

SPEAKER_05

Amen. Thank you, Morgan. And now our Monday morning prayer list. We're praying for the continued health and well-being of the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, Sean Rowe. I'm going to ask Marcia to lead this, and then I'll bless the Lord and bless us.

SPEAKER_04

Ever-living God, whose will it is that all shall come to you through your Son Jesus Christ. Inspire or witness to him, that all may know the power of his forgiveness and the hope of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_05

Let us bless the Lord.

SPEAKER_04

SPEAKER_11

SPEAKER_05
