Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Roy, the Vicar of the Daily Office Network. I'm an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church in Minnesota. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis Monday through Friday at 7 and 9 a.m. to pray morning prayer from the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer. We mix in artwork. Sometimes we have a news story. We have a video at the end. All are welcome here where we do our best to exercise tolerance and decency with one another. And we're from several different faith traditions in several different countries. Let's settle in and begin morning prayer. Today is Monday, the 25th of May, 2026. In the life of the church, our saint is Bede, a priest and historian who died in 735 and was really good at the history piece of this. You'll hear that in just a little bit. Some people refer him to as the venerable Bede. If you're looking for our podcast, we are podcasting now on Apple and Spotify. You can find us there by searching Daily Office Network as your keywords, or there's links on this page when you come back and it's not what I'm displaying. Let's begin. The wise of heart will heed commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin. Remembering U.S. service members killed in the wars is what Memorial Day is all about. Some think it's a day to thank living veterans, but that day is actually on November the 11th, Veterans Day. Memorial Day began during and after the U.S. Civil War, which claimed 600,000 lives in the 1860s. In the photograph above, a father and his daughter commemorate Memorial Day. I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord. Mother Gretchen, would you lead us in the invitatory and the Psalter this morning?

SPEAKER_14

Lord, open our lips.

SPEAKER_06

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

SPEAKER_14

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. Hallelujah.

SPEAKER_10

Come, let us sing to the Lord. Let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before God's presence with thanksgiving and raise to the Lord a shout with songs. For you are a great God. You are great above all gods. In your hand are the caverns of the earth, and the heights of the hills are yours also. The sea is yours, for you made it, and your hands have molded the dry land. Come, let us bow down and bend the knee and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For you are our God, and we are the people of your pasture, and the sheep of your hand. Oh, that today we would hearken to your voice.

SPEAKER_06

Thank you, Mother Gretchen. Our psalm appointed for today is Psalm number 25, and I'm going to ask Let me see here, we got so many people. I'm going to ask Cindy from our late service and Martha to lead the psalm. Cindy, would you start?

SPEAKER_05

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. My God, I put my trust in you. Let me not be humiliated, nor let my enemies triumph over me.

SPEAKER_09

Let none who look to you be put to shame. Let the treasures be disappointed in their schemes.

SPEAKER_05

Show me your ways, O Lord, and teach me your paths.

SPEAKER_09

Lead me in your truth and teach me. For you are the God of my salvation. In you have I trusted all the day law.

SPEAKER_05

Remember, O Lord, your compassion and love, for they are from everlasting.

SPEAKER_09

Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions. Remember me according to your love and for the sake of your goodness, O Lord.

SPEAKER_05

Gracious and upright are you, O Lord. Therefore you teach sinners in your way.

SPEAKER_09

And teach your way to the lowly.

SPEAKER_05

All the paths, O Lord, are love and faithfulness to those who keep your covenant and your testimonies.

SPEAKER_09

For your name's sake, O Lord, forgive my sin for it is great.

SPEAKER_05

Who are they who fear the Lord? The Lord will teach them the way that they should choose.

SPEAKER_09

They shall dwell in prosperity, and their offspring shall inherit the land.

SPEAKER_05

The Lord is a friend to the God fearing and will show them the holy covenant.

SPEAKER_09

My eyes are ever looking to the Lord, who shall pluck my feet out of the net.

SPEAKER_05

Turn to me and have pity on me, for I am left alone and in misery.

SPEAKER_09

The sorrows of my heart have increased, bringing out of my troubles.

SPEAKER_05

Look upon my adversity and misery and forgive me all my sin.

SPEAKER_09

Look upon my enemies for they are many, and they bear vile their hatred against me.

SPEAKER_05

Protect my life and deliver me. Let me not be put to shame for I have trusted in you.

SPEAKER_09

Let integrity and righteousness preserve me, for my hope has been in you.

SPEAKER_05

Deliver Israel, O God, out of all their troubles.

SPEAKER_09

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_06

Amen. Thank you, Cindy and Martha. That was a great reading. The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. Our reading is from Proverbs chapter ten, verses one through twelve. Mother Gwen, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_03

The Proverbs of Solomon. A wise child makes a glad father, but a foolish child is a mother's grief. Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death. The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. A child who gathers in summer is prudent, but a child who sleeps in harvest brings shame. Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rob the wise of heart will heed commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin. Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever follows perverse ways will be found out. Whoever winks the eye causes trouble, but the one who rebukes boldly makes peace. The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. Hatred stirs up strife. But love covers all offenses. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_06

Thanks be to God. Thank you, Mother Gwen. Archanical is the first song of Isaiah. Tom Welsh, would you read this one for us?

SPEAKER_01

Surely it is God who saves me. I will trust in him and not be afraid. For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, and he will be my Savior. Therefore, you shall draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation. And on that day you shall say, Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his name. Make his deeds known among the peoples. See that they remember that his name is exalted. Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, and this is known in all the world. Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Amen. Thank you, Tom. My joy.

SPEAKER_06

It is a true saying and worthy to be believed that Christ Jesus came in the world to save sinners, like this bank robber who was caught on video in Westminster, Colorado, a middle-aged man. He made his getaway on a bicycle. Tony, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_07

Born an apostle of Christ to Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope. Timothy, my loyal child in the faith. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and to Christ Jesus our Lord. I urge you, as I did when I was on my way to Macedonia, to remain in Ephesus, so that you may instruct certain people not to teach any difference of doctrine, and not to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies to promote speculations rather than the divine training that is known by faith. The aim of such instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith. Some people have deviated from these and turned into meaningless talk, desiring to be teachers of the law without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make assertions. Now we know that the law is good if one uses it legitimately. This means understanding that the law is laid down not for the innocent, but for the lawless and the disobedient, for the godless and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their father or mother, for murderers, fornicators, sodomites, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me. I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief. The grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that in Christ Jesus. The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. The Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, whom I am the foremost. For that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example, those who would come to believe in him for eternal life. The King of the Ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, the honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_06

Thanks be to God. Thank you, Tony. Wow, did I hear a lot of truth in that? Our next canticle is Song of the Redeemed. Jill, would you lead this one?

SPEAKER_04

O ruler of the universe, Lord God, great deeds are they that you have done, surpassing human understanding. Your ways are ways of righteousness and truth, O King of all the ages, who can fall to do you homage, Lord, and sing the praises of your name, for you only are the Holy One. All nations will draw near and fall down before you because your just and holy works have been revealed. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_06

Amen. Thank you, Jill. I was looking at this icon before the service today. It's Jesus healing the demon demoniac, but I didn't realize it, but there's a demon coming out of the demoniac's or the person's mouth. If you look at it. He heals a man with a with a demon, not a demoniac, sorry. But if you look at it, it's it's odd to see this demon, and it's actually backwards and upside down coming out of this person's mouth, but hey, there it is. It says Jesus heals a man with a demon. In Matthew's version, this healing brings criticism from the Pharisees, and in response, Jesus warns of an unforgivable curse. Deacon Elizabeth, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_08

Then they brought to Jesus a demoniac who was blind and mute, and he cured him, so that the one who had been mute could speak and see. All the crowds were amazed and said, Can this be the son of David? But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, It is only by Belzebu, the ruler of the demons, that this fellow casts out the demons. He knew what they were thinking and said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. If Satan casts out Satan, he's divided against himself. How then will this kingdom stand? If I cast out demons by Bezobu, by whom do your own exorcist cast them out, therefore they will be your judges. But if it's by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you. Or how can one enter a strong man's house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man? Then indeed the house can be blundered. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. Therefore, I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy. But blasphemy against the spirit will not be forgiven. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven. But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_06

Thanks be to God. Thank you, Deacon. And now the apostles' creed. Addie, would you lead us in the creed?

SPEAKER_11

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day, he rose again. He ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to church to living and the dead. Amen.

SPEAKER_06

Thank you, Eddie. Most of us know that Pentecost was yesterday. One of the things I remember most about when I was younger in church about Pentecost was the descending of the Holy Spirit brought people that could speak in different languages, and they brought them to church. This morning I'm going to ask Jacqueline to lead us in the Lord's Prayer in the language of her heart. And then we will read the suffrages. Jacqueline.

SPEAKER_12

The Lord be with you.

SPEAKER_06

And also with you.

SPEAKER_12

Let us pray. O chenash Joyesena Vesa. Neha sati Neha predesas for Two yeh Budavolya Two Nebitakina Zemli. Hlibnas Nasusni Prostinam provinashi. Yakimi proshajem ovinu Vasjam nashi Invedinasus Spokusu Ale visvolinas vidlukavo Boto ye satsu isila islava Osia Isina Isiato Hoduha Nini Ipovs inaviki.

SPEAKER_06

Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance. You muted on me, Jacqueline. I need you to do the responses.

SPEAKER_12

Govern and uphold them now and always.

SPEAKER_06

Day by day we bless you.

SPEAKER_12

We praise your name forever.

SPEAKER_06

Lord, keep us from all sin today.

SPEAKER_12

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

SPEAKER_06

Lord, show us your love and mercy.

SPEAKER_12

For we put our trust in you.

SPEAKER_06

In you, Lord, is our hope.

SPEAKER_12

And we shall never hope in vain.

SPEAKER_06

Thank you, Jacqueline. I've never heard the Lord's Prayer in Ukrainian. That was beautiful. Our saint of the day is Bede. Priest and historian. This is an icon by Brother Kenneth Howlesley Howesley of Bede, the righteous historian, with Saints Aidan, Hilda, and Cuthbert. Bede was the first scholarly historian to document and interpret events as opposed to earlier royal chronicles chroniclers who kept official records. Bede's church history of England covers the period from 597 to 731, and it remains a primary source even today. He also wrote scripture commentaries and translated the Gospel of John. Bede, our saint of the day. And now three prayers: the collect of the day for Bede, a priest and historian who died in 735, a colic for the renewal of life, and the Anglican Rosary Prayer. Linda Berry, would you lead us in these three prayers?

SPEAKER_02

Almighty God, who has enriched your church with the learning and holiness of your servant Bede, grant us to find in Scripture and disciplined prayer the image of your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ, and to fashion our lives according to his likeness to the glory of your great name and the benefit of your holy church through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O God, the King Eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning. Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace, that having done your will with cheerfulness during the day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Dear Lord Jesus, help me do the things I should, to be to others kind and good, and in all I do or say, grow more loving every day.

SPEAKER_06

Thank you, Linda. And now our Monday morning prayer list, our most recent. We're praying for the continued health and well-being of the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, Sean Rowe. There's nothing wrong with him. We just are praying for his well-being and that it continues that way. As well as the primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, Shane Parker, and the Archbishop of the Province of the West Indies, Philip Wright of Belize. Pray for those immigrants to our country who are being persecuted and pursued by ICE. Pray for our founding vicar, Josh Thomas, in a skilled nursing facility. Pray here for his continued improvement from a stroke. Sarah H is recovering from a fall. She's with us today, but she had a nasty fall on concrete face first and uh it damaged both of her kneecaps, and it's not going to be a quick recovery. It'll take a bit. Pray for Sarah's recovery. Pray for Ian and his struggles with mental health. He is out of the shelter, I understand, and back with his father, uh, just outside of uh Toronto. But he is still struggling with his substance abuse and maintaining a job and all the things that you need to function. So pray for Ian. Dawn has herniated discs and severe pain in her back. She slipped and fell in the bathroom last week. Some water was left on the floor by one of her granddaughters. So pray for Dawn. Reverend Elaine has had undergone multiple surgeries, and there's many more to go. Pray for Elaine. Linda also is undergoing multiple surgeries, so pray for Linda too. Patricia, pray for her for healing and relief of pain. She's in an assisted living facility. She joins us every day, and she's here today. Continue to pray for Yvonne, our Yvonne, who we know has been fighting cancer for at least seven years. She joins us occasionally. Keep praying for Yvonne. Thank you, Stephen. Thank you, Reverend Rhonda. That was wonderful. There's a lot of prayers there today. We'll continue with the prayer for the mission of the church. And I'm going to ask Beth Spell to lead us in the prayer for the mission of the church. And then I'll bless the Lord and bless us.

SPEAKER_13

Inspire our witness to him, that all may know the power of his forgiveness and the hope of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you in the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

SPEAKER_06

Amen. Let us bless the Lord. Hallelujah.

SPEAKER_13

Thanks be to God. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.

SPEAKER_06

Life is short, and we don't have much time to gladden the hearts of those that make this journey with us. So be swift to love and make haste to be kind. And glory to God, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God, from generation to generation, the church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever. In the blessing of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be upon you now and remain with you always. Amen. And that is morning prayer on this Memorial Day. Thank you for coming to pray today. Wherever you go, take that love of Jesus that lives inside of you, that Jesus you carry in your heart. Share that Jesus with the world. Show that Jesus to the world. Janet, will you greet those who will join us later in the day?

SPEAKER_00

All those who are gathered together here this morning and everyone who will join us throughout the day. Pache Ebene. Peace and good to all.

SPEAKER_06

All means all, all means you. We hope to see you back with us tomorrow, safe and sound.
