Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Royd, the Vicar of the Daily Office Network. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis to pray morning prayer from the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer. We come from several different faith traditions and several different countries. We do our best to exercise tolerance and decency here with one another. Let's settle in and begin morning prayer. Today is the 27th of May. It is a Wednesday. In the life of the church, it is Wednesday after Pentecost, and it is also an Ember Day. Edit out our personal prayers and the video at the end and post it so that those who listen to podcasts can pray along with us. One who justifies the wicked and one who condemns the righteous are both alike an abomination to the Lord. This smiling young person right here is Leon Nathir, an Anglican-Palestinian woman, and she's been released from Damon prison at Diliet al-Kamal in Israel, eight months after an Israeli court convicted her on what they called unclear charges. Joyful news today for the release of Lyan Nashir, Archbishop Hosem Naim, the Bishop of the Diocese of Jerusalem and the primate of the Anglican province of Jerusalem in the Middle East, said in a May 15th Facebook post. Nasir is a member of St. Peter's Anglican Church in Bierzett in the occupied West Bank. Typical of Land's personality, her primary concern was not for herself, but for the prisoners that are remaining, with whom she had shared a cramped cell, and others that were held in Damon Prison near Haifa. The very Reverend Richard Sewell, Dean of St. George's College in Jerusalem, said in an interview with the UK-based Church Times. Wasn't a lot of information on the story other than that she was released and that there were unclear charges. You serve time in prison, usually you know why you're there. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Addie, would you lead us in the invitatory and the Psalter this morning? Lord, open our lips, and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

SPEAKER_02

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. Hallelujah. Come, let us sing to the Lord, let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before God's presence with thanksgiving and rock and praise to the Lord and shout with songs. For you are a great God, you are great above all gods. In your hands are the cannons of the earth, and the heights of the hills are yours also. The sea is yours, for you made it, and your hands have molded the dry land. Come, let us bow down and bend the knees and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For you are our God, and we are the people of your pastor and the sheep of your hand. Oh, that today we would hearken to your voice.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you, Eddie. Our psalm appointed for this morning is Psalm number 38, and I'm going to ask Martha and Jill to lead our psalm. Martha, would you start? Excuse me.

SPEAKER_09

Oh Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger. Do not punish me in your wrath.

SPEAKER_07

For your arrows have already pierced me, and your hand presses hard upon me.

SPEAKER_09

There is no health in my flesh because of your indignation. There is no sadness in my body because of my sin.

SPEAKER_07

For my inequities overwhelm me like a heavy burden. They are too much for me to bear.

SPEAKER_09

My wounds stink a fester. A reason of my foolishness.

SPEAKER_07

I am utterly bowed down and prostate. I go about in the morning all the day long.

SPEAKER_09

Sharing peace through my inner. There is no help in my body.

SPEAKER_07

I am utterly numb and crushed. I wail because of the groaning of my heart.

SPEAKER_09

Oh Lord, you know all my desires. And my sighing is not hidden from you.

SPEAKER_07

My heart is pounding, my strength has failed me, and the brightness of my eyes is gone from me.

SPEAKER_09

My friends and companions stroll me back from my affliction. My neighbors stand afar.

SPEAKER_07

Those who seek after my life lay snares for me. Those who strive to hurt me speak of my ruin and plot treachery all the day long.

SPEAKER_09

But I am like a deaf who do not hear. And those who are mute and do not open their mouth.

SPEAKER_07

I have become like one who does not hear, and from whose mouth comes no defense.

SPEAKER_09

For in you, O Lord, have I fixed my hope. You will answer me. O Lord my God.

SPEAKER_07

For I said, do not let them rejoice at my expense. Those who gloat over me when my foot slips.

SPEAKER_09

Truly I am on the verge of falling. And my pain is always with me.

SPEAKER_07

I will confess my iniquity and be sorry for my sin.

SPEAKER_09

Those who are my enemies with our course are mighty. And many in a mock are those who wrongfully hate me.

SPEAKER_07

Those who repay evil for good slander me because I follow the course that is right.

SPEAKER_09

Oh Lord, do not forsake me. Do not far from me, O my God.

SPEAKER_07

Make haste to help me. O Lord of my salvation.

SPEAKER_09

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

unknown

Amen.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you, Jill and Martha. That was a great reading. Photograph of myself, my son Duncan, and our two my two grandchildren, Theo and Edison. Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their pres is their parents. Our reading is from Proverbs chapter 17, verses 1 through 20. Chad, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_01

Better is a dry morsel with quiet than a house full of feasting with strife. A slave who deals wisely will rule over a child who acts shamefully, and will share the inheritance as one of the family. The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, but the Lord tests the heart. An evildoer listens to wicked lips, and a liar gives heed to a mischievous tongue. Those who mock the poor insult their maker. Those who are glad at calamity will not go unpunished. Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their parents. Fine speech is not becoming to a fool. Still less is false speech to a ruler. A bribe is like a magic stone in the eyes of those who give it, wherever they turn they prosper. One who forgives an affront fosters friendship, but one who dwells on disputes will alienate a friend. A rebuke strikes deeper into a discerning person than a hundred blows into a fool. Evil people seek only rebellion, but a cruel messenger will be sent against them. Better to meet a she bear robbed of its cubs than to confront a fool immersed in folly. Evil will not depart from the house of one who returns evil for good. The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so stop before the quarrel breaks out. One who justifies the wicked and one who condemns the righteous are both alike an abomination to the Lord. Who should fools have a price I'm sorry, why should fools have a price in hand to buy wisdom when they have no mind to learn? A friend loves at all times, and kinsfolk are born to share adversity. It is senseless to give a pledge to become surety for a neighbor. One who loves transgression loves strife. One who builds a high threshold invites broken bones. The crooked of mind do not prosper, and the perverse of tongue fall into calamity. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_03

Thanks be to God. Thank you, Chan. Our first canticle is the third song of Isaiah.

SPEAKER_04

Already shine for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has dawned upon you. For behold, darkness covers the land, deep gloom enshrouds the peoples. But over you the Lord will rise, and his glory will appear upon you. Nations will stream to your light, and kings to the brightness of your day. Your gates will always be open. By day or night they will never be shut. Violence will no more be heard in your land. Ruin or destruction within your borders. You will call your law salvation and all your portals press. The sun will never not more be your light by day. By night you will not meet the brightness of the moon. The Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_03

The saying is sure, whoever aspires to the office of bishop desires a noble task. And for those that don't know, that is Bishop Michael Curry. Patricia, would you lead this?

SPEAKER_05

The saying is sure, whoever aspires to the office of bishop desires a noble task. Now a bishop must be above reproach, married only once, temperate, sensible, respectable, hospitable, an apt teacher, not a drunkard, not violent, but gentle, not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, keeping his children submissive and respectful in every way. For if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how can he take care of God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may be pulled up, puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace and the snare of the devil. Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not indulging in much wine, not greedy for money. They must hold fast to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. And let them first be tested, then if they prove themselves blameless, let them serve as deacons. Women likewise must be serious, not slanderous, but temperate, faithful in all things. Let deacons be married only once and let them manage their children and their households well. For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and a great boldness in this faith that is in Christ Jesus. I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these instructions to you so that if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth. Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is great. He was revealed in flesh, vindicated in spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among Gentiles, believed in throughout the world, taken up in glory. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_03

Thanks be to God. Thank you, Patricia. Our second canticle is Song of Zachariah. Mother Ungel.

SPEAKER_04

Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel. You have come to your people and set them free. You have raised up for us a mighty Savior, born of the house of your servant David. Through your holy prophets, you promised a hold, to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us, to show mercy to our forebears, and to remember your holy covenant. This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham, to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship you without fear, holy and righteous before you all the days of our life. And your child shall be called the prophet of the Most High. For you will go before the Lord to prepare the way, to give God's people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God, the dawn from unhigh shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen. In the tender compassion of our God, the dawn from on high shall break upon us.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you, Mother Angel. Jesus speaking to the people about an evil generation. Deacon Elizabeth, would you share this?

SPEAKER_06

Sure. Jesus said, When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it wanders through waterless regions looking for a resting place, but it finds none. Then it says, I will return to my house from which I came. When it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself. And they enter and live there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So will it be also for this evil generation? When he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers were standing outside wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside wanting to speak to you. But to the one who had told him this, Jesus replied, Who is my mother and who are my brothers? And pointing to his disciples, he said, He are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_03

Thanks be to God. Thank you, Deacon. And now the Apostle's Creed. Jacqueline, would you lead us in the creed?

SPEAKER_10

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

SPEAKER_03

Amen. Thank you, Jacqueline. And now the prayers begin with our Lord's Prayer. John R., would you lead us in the Lord's Prayer? And then we'll read the suffrages. The Lord be with you. And also with you.

SPEAKER_08

Let us pray. Our Father in heaven. Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_03

Show us your mercy, O Lord.

SPEAKER_08

And grant us your salvation.

SPEAKER_03

Clothe your ministers with righteousness.

SPEAKER_08

Let your people sing with joy.

SPEAKER_03

Give us peace, O Lord, in all the world.

SPEAKER_08

For only in you can we live in safety.

SPEAKER_03

Lord, keep our nations under your care.

SPEAKER_08

And guide us in the way of justice and truth.

SPEAKER_03

Let your way be known upon earth.

SPEAKER_08

You're saving health among all nations.

SPEAKER_03

Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten. Create in us clean hearts, O God.

SPEAKER_08

And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you, John. Excuse me. This is a photograph of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York. This was formerly an English-speaking congregation. It started as a Chinese ministry in 1993 with Chinese American priest Peter Lamb, who retired five years ago after 28 years in the parish. The parish, I'm sorry, after 28 years as a priest. The parish offers an 11 a.m. Sunday Eucharist in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. Beautiful building there. Now four prayers. The collect of the day, I think we get it down to four. The collect of the day for proper three, the collect for ember day, because it is an ember day today for all Christians in their vocation, a collect on racism and injustice, and a collect for grace. I guess we got it to five. And a collect for joy in God's creation. So let's divide these up. I'm going to ask our Deacon Diana to read the first two. Actually, let's make it the first three. And then Jill, would you lead the last two? So three and two. Deacon Diana, when you're ready.

SPEAKER_00

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified. Receive our supplications and prayers, which we offer before you for all members of your holy church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. O God, call us into a deeper relationship to be your church for the sake of the world. Help us to see with new eyes the injustices within church and society. Call us to have a loving heart that respects and uplifts the humanity and dignity of every person. Open our ears to listen and learn from the experiences of people whose skin is different from ours. Open our mouths to speak up about injustices. Join us with others to work for racial equity and inclusion for all people. Amen. Lord God, Almighty and Everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day. Preserve us with your mighty power that we may not fall into sin nor be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling purpose, the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SPEAKER_03

Amen. Thank you, Deacon. There may just be one more, but Jill's got it. For joy in God's creation, these are Baltimore Orioles that are visiting Minnesota. We've had several of those recently. We started feeding them with oranges and grape jelly, and it's amazing how they just come. There's also a blue jay in the bottom right of this picture, if you look, in full wing spread. Go ahead, Jill.

SPEAKER_07

O Heavenly Father, you have filled the world with beauty. Open our eyes to behold your gracious hand in all our works, that rejoicing in your whole creation, we may learn to serve you with gladness for the sake of Him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you, Joe. Looking back at those Baltimore Orioles, I was amazed when they showed up because they said they were here, but I've never seen one in Minnesota before.

SPEAKER_07

Really? Oh.

SPEAKER_03

And now our Wednesday morning prayer list for healing of body, mind, and soul. We start out by praying for the essential workers in our world, without whose sacrifice and toil many things would not get accomplished. We're grateful for all they do for us. Prayers for our founding vicar, Josh Thomas, in a skilled nursing facility after a stroke. Prayers for healing for Deacon Leilani and the health challenges that she faces every day. She undergoes dialysis once a week or twice a week. Laura's been in the hospital multiple times recently, and she's endured multiple surgeries. Laura's not out of the woods yet. Please continue to pray for Laura. Andrea with a brain tumor, and we've been praying for Andrea for a while. She has been moved to hospice. And Katrina Soto, she's Katrina's niece. Katrina asks that we pray for her peace in hospice. Pray for Beth and Jim. Beth is a member of our later congregation, and Jim has been losing his eyesight slowly, and it's been a long road for them. And he gave up his driver's license a while back, and it's just it's been a difficult path. I can only imagine how hard that must be. Stephen, Paul, Danielle, Peter, Jerry G, Robbie, and Zachary all have cancer. Pray for all of those who have cancer. Don and Shirley have dementia. Patricia, who read for us just a little bit ago, pray for her continued strength and wellness. She's in assisted living facility. And pray for all of those who are in hospice at comfort care. On Wednesday, we pray for the caregivers. There are many, and we're just going to mention a few. Jan, excuse me, Mary Ann, Cheryl, Beth, Judith, Tenna, Morgan, Pam, and Mark. Martha, would you lead us in the prayer for the mission of the church?

SPEAKER_09

Almighty and everlasting God, whose spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified. Receive our supplications and praise which we offer before you for all members of your holy church. That in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly save you through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

SPEAKER_03

Let us bless the Lord.

SPEAKER_09

Thanks be to God.

SPEAKER_03

Life is short, and we don't have much time to gladden the hearts of those who make this journey with us. So be swift to love and make haste to be kind. And may the blessing of the God of Abraham and Sarah, and of Jesus Christ, born of our sister Mary, who and the Holy Spirit who broods over the world is a mother over her children, be upon you now and remain with you always. Amen.

SPEAKER_09

Amen.

SPEAKER_03

And that is morning prayer on this Wednesday. Thank you for coming to pray today. Wherever you go, take that love of Jesus that lives inside of you, the Jesus you carry in your heart. Share that Jesus with the world. Show that Jesus to the world. Hope to see you back with us tomorrow, safe and sound.
