Good morning. This is Morning Prayer on the Daily Office Network. I'm Michael Hartney. I'm sitting in for Father Tom today, and I'm in the Diocese of Rochester, New York. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians of different faith traditions in several different countries. We come together to pray the Daily Office Monday to Friday live and use the Book of Common Prayer, 1979, of the Episcopal Church. Every day we highlight a new story and include art and illustrations for the readings and the day's commemoration. Everyone is welcome here and we are kind to one another as we pray together. Morning prayer on the 26th of June 2026. We commemorate today Isabel Florence Hapgood, an ecumenist who died in 1928. The Daily Office Network is has a podcast, and several people avail themselves of this during the day and read morning prayer with us. Moses said to them, Listen, you rebels, shall we bring water for you out of this rock? The Episcopal Church, after decades of discussions about the prudence of owning and maintaining a building in New York City as its headquarters, will test the market for a possible redevelopment sale or both, the presiding bishop announced on June 17th. The Episcopal Church Center in Midtown Manhattan, commonly referred to as 815 because of its street address, 815 2nd Avenue, rises 12 stories and contains 146,000 square feet of space. But in recent years, much of the churchwide staff has worked remotely in locations across the United States and Europe. Less than half the building is now occupied by church operations or affiliated organizations. After consulting this week with the Executive Council, church officials are hiring New York-based Denham Wolf Real Estate services to market the 63-year-old building for a possible sale. 815 2nd Avenue, just a few blocks from the United Nations. The hour is coming, and now is when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. Addie, would you lead the invitatory? Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning and now and will be forever. Amen. Hallelujah. Come, let us sing to the Lord. Let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before God's presence with thanksgiving and raise to the Lord a shout with songs. For you are a great God. You are great above all gods. And your hands are the cabins of the earth, and the heights of the hills are yours also. The sea is yours, for you made it, and your hands have molded the dry land. Come, let us bow down and bend the knee and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For you are our God, and we are the people of your pasture and the sheep of your hand. Today would hearken to your voice.

And shortened the number of my days.

And I said, O my God, do not take me away in the midst of my days.

Your years endure throughout all generations. In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth. And the heavens are the work of your hands. They shall perish, but you will endure. They all shall wear out like a garment. As clothing, you will change them, and they shall be changed.

But you are always the same.

And your years will never end. The children of your servants shall continue. And their offspring shall stand fast in your sight. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. Amen.

The first of the readings is from the book of Numbers, the twentieth chapter, verses one to thirteen. Michael.

The Israelites, the whole congregation came into the wilderness of Zinn in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh Kadesh, Miriam died there, and was buried there. Excuse me. Now there was no water for the congregation, so they gathered together against Moses and against Aaron. The people quarreled with Moses and said, Would that we had died with our kindred, died before the Lord? Why have you brought the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness for us and our livestock to die here? Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to bring us this wretched place? It is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink. Then Moses and Aaron went away from the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting. They fell on their faces, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Take the staff and assemble the congregation, you and your brother Aaron, and command the rock before their eyes to yield its water. Thus you shall bring water out of the rock for them, thus you shall provide drink for the congregation and the livestock. So Moses took the staff before the Lord as he had commanded him. Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, Listen, you rebels, shall we bring water for you from this rock? And Moses lifted up his hand, struck the rock twice with his staff. Water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their livestock drank. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, Because you did not trust in me to show my holiness before the eyes of the Israelites, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them. These are the waters of Meribah, where the people of Israel quarrel with the Lord, and by which he shows his holiness, the word of the Lord.

And he will have compassion unto our God, for he will richly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, know your ways, my ways says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, some are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts, for as rain and snow fall from the heavens, and return not again but water the earth, bringing forth life and giving growth, seed for sowing and permit for eating. So is my word that goes forth from my mouth. It will not return to me empty, but it will accomplish that which I have purposed, and prosper in that for which I sent it. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen.

We can't quite see all of Jesus in this depiction, but I'm sure the rest rest of him is above. The second reading is from the fifth chapter of Romans, verses twelve to twenty-one. Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned. Sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned with when there is no law. Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass, for if the many died through the one man's trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. And the free gift is not like the effect of the one who one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification, if because of the one man's trespass, death exercise dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Therefore, just as one man's trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man's act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all, for just as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. But law came in with the result that the trespass multiplied. But where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that just as sin exercised dominion and death, so grace might also exercise dominion through justification, leading to an eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. They said to him, Lord, let our eyes be opened. Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they regained their sight and followed him. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Yes. I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
