Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Roy, the Vicar of the Daily Office Network. I'm an ordained priest in the Diocese of Minnesota in the Episcopal Church. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis to pray morning prayer. We use the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer as our guide. We mix in artwork. We have a news story. There's a video at the end. All are welcome here where we do our best to exercise tolerance and decency with one another. Now let's settle in and begin morning prayer. Today is the last day of June. It is the 30th of June 2026. In the life of the church, it is Tuesday in proper eight. If you're looking for our podcast, you'll find us on Apple or Spotify. Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey and it said to Balam, What have I done to you? That you've struck me these three times. The Episcopal Church is breaking ground on a new facility to house its archival collections on a 3.5-acre property in Oakwood, Georgia, that was former home of the Diocese of Atlantis at St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church. The $4.5 million project is expected to be completed by the spring of 2027. The photo above is provided by the Episcopal Church. So Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the officials of Moab. God's anger was kindled because he was going, and the angel of the Lord took his stand in the road as his adversary. The donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand. So the donkey turned off the road and went into the field. And then he struck the donkey to turn it back onto the road. Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow place between the vineyards with the wall on either side. And when the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it scraped against the wall. It scraped and stood against the wall. So it scraped it against. Then the angel of the Lord went hidden and stood in a narrow place. Where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left. And when the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it went to Balaam. And Balaam's anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with his face. Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey. And it said to Balaam, you have struck me three times. Balaam said to the donkey, Because you have made a fool of me. I would have a sword in my hand. I would kill you with. The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it is not turned away from me early just now, I would have killed you and literally. Then Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, I have sinned, for I did not know that you were standing in the road to oppose me. The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you to speak. So Balaam went home with the officials of Balach. When Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him and irresistible. At the farthest point of the boundary, Balak said to Balaam, Did I not sin to summon you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you? Balaam said to Balak. I have come to you, Nalam. But do I have the power to say just anything? The words God puts in my mouth, that is what I must say. Do you not know, brothers and sisters? For I am speaking to those who know the law, that the law is binding on a person only during that person's lifetime. Thus a married woman is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is discharged from the law concerning the husband. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man, she is not an adulteress. In the same way, my friends, you have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. While we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. But now we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us captive, so that we are slaves not under the written code, but in the new life of the spirit. What then should we say that the law is sin? By no means. Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known the sin. I would not have known what is to covet if the law had not said you shall not covet. But sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died, and the very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, deceived me through though it killed though it killed me. So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good. The word of the Lord.

Amen. Thank you, Morgan. And now it's time for our report on military news that is called They Have Names. It is started by our late honorary deacon Clint Gillilan, a retired Navy medic. They have names, our service members at home and abroad, and they're in danger from the minute that they take the oath. We tell of their heroism, and if they are casualties we speak their names. We pray for all of them and we pray to God for peace in every nation. And here's where things stand this week. We have no deaths to report in war or training. However, we are going to talk about some deaths this morning. Soon after Marines gathered to remember Corporal Drew Mobley, command staff at the Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, or ARFF unit in Quantico, Virginia, reportedly collected everyone's phones, closed the doors, and began confronting criticism of the command. Several of the Marines reportedly told investigators they believed leadership failures contributed to deteriorating morale within the unit. The Marine Corps' suicide prevention procedures, updated just four days before the gathering, emphasize the importance of trust, active listening and creating a safe command climate after a suicide. The guidance warns that survivors often experience guilt, anger, and a desire to assign blame. Leaders are instructed to foster hope, reduce stigma, and encourage open discussion of stressors affecting Marines. Corporal Mobley's suicide was the third within the Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico in less than two years. A senior enlisted Marine assigned to that facility died by suicide in August of 2023, and another ARFF Marine took his own life several months later. A fourth ARFF Marine also died by suicide in February of this year. In 2024, 471 active duty military members died by suicide. Help is available by calling or texting, I'm sorry, and 17 veterans die every day. Help is available by calling or texting 988, or an online chat is also available for military 988Lifeline.org or by reaching out to the nearest VA hospital. This is a problem that can be overcome. This is a problem that people don't have to walk this path alone. They can reach out and have someone else to talk to about this. And so we pray for those in the armed forces of our countries. Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care in keeping all of the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad, defend them day by day with your heavenly grace, strengthen them in their trials and their temptations, give them courage to face the perils which beset them, and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And a collect for peace. O God, the author of peace and the lover of concord, to know you as eternal life and to serve you as perfect freedom. Defend us, your humble servants, and all assaults of our enemies, that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And that's our report this week for they have names. Let's remember to pray for our service members at home and abroad, and to support those who keep the home fires burning. We'll continue with the prayer for the mission of the church. I'm going to ask Patricia to lead this, and then I'll bless the Lord and bless us.
