Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Roy, the Vicar of the Daily Office Network. I'm an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Minnesota. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis Monday through Friday at 7 and 9 Eastern time to pray morning prayer. We use the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer. We mix in artwork. We have a news story. There's a video and a song at the end. All are welcome here where we do our best to exercise tolerance and decency with one another. And we're not all just Episcopalians. We come from many different faith traditions and we even come from several different countries. Let's settle in and begin morning prayer, shall we? Today is Monday. It is the 13th of July, 2026. There is no saint appointed in the Episcopal Church for today. Today is a Monday in proper 10. We are posting our edited service to podcast. Let's begin. Likewise, the spirit helps us in our weakness, or we do not know how to pray as we ought. But that very spirit intercedes with sighs, too deep for words. This is an interesting story about the use of AI. This is a scroll. The surviving part of an ancient scroll that was burnt to a crisp when Mount Vesuvius erupted nearly 2,000 years ago, has been virtually unwrapped and read with the help of artificial intelligence. Researchers uncovered 20 columns of previously hidden text covering more than a meter of charred papyrus without physically unrolling the scroll. The work discussed Stoic philosophy on ethics, art, and human behavior, and it dates to the second or late third century BC. This was a story that was carried in the Guardian Vesuvius Challenge 2026. Here's what the scroll looked like that they scanned. It's a charred scroll, and it was scanned to create that above image. Isn't that just amazing? I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord. Addie, would you lead us in the invitatory in the Psalter this morning?

Amen. Thank you, Jill and Martha. That was a great reading. An icon of Rahab the Just. It's by Carol Adele Jouet from 2011. Rahab, a prostitute in Jericho, was a woman of faith and discernment who recognized the Lord's work and hid Joshua's spies, asking protection for her family in return. Our first reading comes from Joshua, chapter two, verses one through fourteen. Chad, would you lead this?

Then Joshua, son of Nun, sent two men secretly from Shatem as spies, saying, Go view the land, especially Jericho. So they went and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and spent the night there. The king of Jerichos was told, Some Israelites have come here tonight to search out the land. Then the king of Jericho sent orders to Rahab, Bring out the men who have come to you who entered your house, for they have come only to search out the whole land. But the woman took the two men and hid them. Then she said, True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they came from. And when it was time to close the gate at dark, the men went out. Where the men went, I do not know. Pursue them quickly, for you can overtake them. She had, however, brought them up to the roof and hidden them with the stalks of flax that she had laid out on the roof. So the men pursued them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. As soon as the pursuers had gone out the gate was shut. Before they went to sleep she came up to them on the roof and said to the men, I know the Lord has given you the land, and that dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt in fear before you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond the Jordan, to Shannon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed, and as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no courage left in any of us because of you. The Lord your God is indeed God in heaven above and on earth below. Now then, since I have dealt kindly with you, swear to me by the Lord that you in turn will deal kindly with my family. Give me a sign of good faith that you will spare my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death. The men said to her, Our life is yours. If you do not tell this business of ours, then we will deal kindly and faithfully with you when the Lord gives us the land. The word of the Lord.

Amen. Amen. Thank you, Jackie. First thing that stood out to me about this piece of artwork was the lamb on the plate with the head on it. This is the master of Para from the fifteenth century, the Last Supper with a lamb. Our reading comes from Paul's letter to the Romans chapter eleven, verses one through twelve. Paul, would you lead this?

I ask then, has God rejected his people? By no means. I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? Lord, they have they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life. But what is the divine reply to him? I have kept for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the bowed the knee to Baal. So too at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace. What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened. As it is written, God gave them a sluggish spirit, eyes that would not see, and ears that would not hear, down to this very day. And David said, Let there be table, let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them. Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and keep their backs forever bent. So I ask, have they stumbled so as to fall? By no means, but through their stumbling salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous. Now if their stumbling meal means riches for the world, and if their defeat means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean? The word of the Lord.

Amen. Thank you, Patricia. And now our Monday morning prayer list. We're praying for our the continued health and well-being of the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, Sean Rowe. Sean was in uh Los Angeles this past weekend for the uh installation of the new bishop in LA. We're also praying for the primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, Shane Parker, and for the Archbishop of the province of the West Indies, Philip Wright of Belize. We're also praying for those immigrants to our country who are being persecuted and pursued by ICE. I know this is very much in the news right now, as a Mexican person was shot in Houston this past week, and there's a lot of dissent about what happened, and there's a lot of anger and pray for God's hand in this. First for Josh Thomas, our founding vicar in a skilled nursing facility for his continued improvement from a stroke. He's still waiting for a surgery date for the rather large kidney stone that has to be removed surgically as it has sharp edges. First for Josh. Sarah is still recovering from her fall. She had broken both of her kneecaps and landed on her face, and that's been over a month ago, maybe two months now, but she's still recovering. I pray for her recovery as she tries to get back to wholeness. Pray for Ian and his struggles with mental health. Carmen and her health challenges. Pray for her divine healing. Dawn has herniated discs and severe pain in her back. We're praying for Dawn. Pray for Jan for provision and employment. Her unemployment has run out. Patricia just read for us. She's in an assisted living facility. Pray for her healing and for relief of her pain. And continue to pray for Yvonne, our Yvonne, who's been fighting cancer for seven plus years.
