Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Royd, the Vicar of the Daily Office Network. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis to pray morning prayer. We use the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer as our guide. We mix in artwork. We have a news story. On Tuesdays, like today, we have a story about our military. We come from several different faith traditions in several different countries. All are welcome here where we do our best to exercise tolerance and decency with one another. Now let's begin morning prayer. Today is the 14th of July, 2026. In the life of the church, our saint is Arugula von Grumbach, a scholar and a church reformer who died in the year 1554. But if some of the branches were broken off and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place to share the rich root of the olive tree, do not boast over the branches. Pope Leo the Fourteenth pays tribute at the cemetery on little Joseph's grave in La Putisia, Sicily, in southern Italy, on Saturday, July the 4th, during a one-day pastoral visit to an island that has become a symbol of the risks faced by migrants trying to reach Europe by sea. In your hand are the caverns of the earth, and the heights of the hills are yours also. The sea is yours, for you made it, and your hands have molded the dry land. Come, let us bow down and bend the knee and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For you are our God, and we are the people of your pasture and the sheep of your hand. Oh, that today we would hearken to your voice.

Amen. Thank you, Jill and Martha. That was a great reading. Well, we saw Rahab yesterday. This is a different likeness of Rahab. Rahab of Jericho. Our first lesson comes from Joshua chapter two, verses fifteen through twenty four. Brother Tucker, would you lead this one for us?

Then Rahab let the Israelite spies down by a rope through a window, for her house was on the outer side of the city wall, and she resided within the wall itself. She said to them, Go toward the right the hill country, so that the pursuers may not come upon you. Hide yourselves three days until the pursuers have returned, then afterward you may go your way. The men said to her, We will be released from the this oath that you have made us swear to if we invade the land, and if and you do not tie this crimson cord in the window through which you let us down, and you and you do not gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers and all your family. If any of you go out of the doors of your house into the streets, they shall be responsible for their own death, and we shall be innocent. But if a hand is laid upon any who are with you in the house, we shall bear the responsibility for your death. But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be released from this oath that you made us swear to you. She said, According to your words, let it be done. She sent them away, and they departed. Then she trot tied the crimson cord in the window. They departed and went into the hill country and stayed there three days until the pursuers returned. The pursuers had searched all around the way and found nothing. Then the two men came down again from the hill country. They crossed over, came to Joshua, son of Nun, and told him all that had happened to them. They said to Joshua, Truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands. Moreover, all the inhabitants of the land melt in fear before us. The word of the Lord.

Thank you, Jacqueline. This is a grafted olive tree in Israel. Our reading is from Romans chapter eleven, verses thirteen through twenty-four. Paul, would you lead this?

Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I glorify my ministry in order to make my own people jealous, and thus save some of them. For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? And the part of the dough offered as first fruits is if the part of the dough that is offered as first fruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy, and if the root is holy, then the branches also are holy. But if some of the branches were broken off, and you a wild olive shoot were grafted in their place to share the rich root of the olive tree, do not boast over the branches. If you do boast, remember that it is not you that support the root, but the root that supports you. You will say Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in. That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand only through faith. So do not become proud, but stand in awe. For if God did not spare the natural branches, perhaps he will not spare you. Note then the kindness and the severity of God, severity towards those who have fallen, but God's kindness toward you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you also will be cut off, and even those of Israel, if they do not persist in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. For if you have been cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural branches be grafted back into their own olive tree? The word of the Lord.

For you created everything that is, and by your will they were created and have their being. And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain, for with your blood you have redeemed for God, from every family, language, people, and nation a kingdom of priests to serve our God. And so to him who sits upon the throne, and to Christ the Lamb, we worship and praise, dominion, and splendor forever and forevermore.

Thank you, Gwen. And we see some people on the right there with some things, and we see somebody digging a hole with a little pot there by them. This is English School's early 20th century parable of the talents. Talents are also called pounds. Our reading is from Matthew chapter 25, verses 14 through 30. Deacon Diana, would you lead this?

Jesus said, For it is as if a man going on a journey summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents, but the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, Master, you handed over to me five talents. See, I have made five more talents. His master said to him, Well done, good and trustworthy slave. You have been trustworthy in a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into joy of the joy of your master. And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, Master, you handed over to me two talents. See, I have made two more talents. His master said to him, Well done, good and trustworthy slave, you have been trustworthy in a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master. Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed. So I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you here you have what is yours. But his master replied, You wicked and lazy slave, you knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter, then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return what I would have received, what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and dashing of teeth. The word of the Lord.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered on the Pontius Pile, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again, he ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The likeness of our saint of the day, Arugala von Grumbach. She was a member of German nobility who became the first woman to publish theological arguments for Lutheranism in the 1520s. She famously challenged a university faculty in Bavaria where Lutheran works were banned for arresting a Lutheran student. And threatening to burn him alive. She wrote, What have Luther and Malchathon taught, save the Word of God? You have condemned them, you have not refuted them. Her intellectual attack was withering, and her being a woman caused a sensation. Soon her letters, her poems and her poems were being re republished by the tens of thousands. Arugala von Grumbach, our saint of the day. And now two prayers, the collect of the day for Arugala von Grumbach, scholar and church reformer who died in 1554, and a collect for the nation. Deacon Elizabeth, would you lead these two prayers?

Sure. Almighty God, who gave your servant Agula von Grompach, a spirit of wisdom and power to love your word and boldly to draw others to his truth. Pour out that same spirit upon us so that we, knowing and loving your holy word, may be unashamed of Christ and may not sin against the Holy Spirit that is within us. This we ask in the name of the same Son and Holy Spirit who live and reign with you, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory, to serve you in freedom and in peace. Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Amen. Thank you, Deacon. And now it's time for our weekly report on military news, which is called They Have Names. It was started in 2007 by our late honorary deacon, Clint Gillilan. They have names, our service members at home and abroad. They're in danger from the minute that they take the oath. We tell of their heroism. If there are casualties where we speak their names, we pray for all of them, and we pray to God for peace in every nation. And here's where things stand this week. We have no casualties in war to report, or as a result of war is probably a better way to put it. However, we do have a news story. The title on the image above says crew member missing after Navy helicopter crash in the Arabian Sea. The U.S. Navy announced Sunday, and that would have been Sunday, July the 5th, that an expansive search for a missing sailor had been suspended following a helicopter's emergency landing two weeks ago in the Arabian Sea. I'm sorry, that would be this last Sunday. Three crew members were recovered and were last described as being in stable condition aboard the carrier, though the extent of any injuries has not been disclosed. An extensive search and rescue mission for the missing crew member was led by the United States Navy and the United States Air Force and the U.S. Central Command Area of Responsibility. It lasted for more than 102 hours, and it spanned more than 14,000 square miles. The search was called off at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July the 5th. The Associated Press reported on Monday, the 13th, this was an update today, that the U.S. military officially official tally of deaths in the Iran War has risen to 14 service members with the death of a Navy pilot in a helicopter crash early in July in the Arabian Sea. And I believe they're talking about this incident. However, they're not specifically telling us this. Normally the name of someone who is considered to have died or is missing like this is released to their family. And then within 24 hours, they release it to the general public. That's not the case in this incident. We're not being giving any other information as far as this service member is concerned. So we'll pray for him. We'll pray for his family, even though he is unnamed. We'll pray for all of our service members who are in harm's way. We also pray for those that we love on active duty. And we specifically mention Father David, a chaplain who's serving, Ian, Logan, Arnold, Dudley, Gina, Raleigh, Janelle, and Amanda and Rob, a married couple who are both serving. Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care in keeping all of the men and women of the armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace. Strengthen them in their trials and their temptations, give them the courage to face the perils which beset them, and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And a collect for peace. O God, the author of peace and the lover of concord, to know you as eternal life, to serve you as perfect freedom, defend us your humble servants in all assaults of our enemies, that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And that's our report, for they have names. Let's remember to pray for our service members at home and abroad and support those who keep the home fires burning.
