And good morning. My name is Tony Vitaly. I am a lay minister and verger of Trinity Church in the Diocese of New Jersey. We are a community of Christians from several different faith traditions and several different countries who come together to pray morning prayer on a daily basis. We use the 1979 Episcopal Church Book of Common Prayer. We highlight a news story and we mix in artwork. All are welcome here, where we do our best to exercise tolerance and decency with one another. And now let us begin. It is a major feast day in the church's calendar, and it is Mary Magdalene's Day. I will save the lame, gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. Our picture today comes from Canada, the great city of Toronto, and the Church of Saint Mary of Magdalene. Serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Know this the Lord Himself is God. He himself has made us, and we are his. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving. Go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and call upon his name. For the Lord is good, his mercy is everlasting, and his faithfulness endures from age to age.

Amen. Thank you both so much. Our picture today comes from the 1500s and provided by the French Ministry of Culture. So we are guaranteed by them to be a wonderful example. The French are never wrong. Zephaniah addresses the people. He lived in the time of King Josiah and was a contemporary of Jeremiah. He predicted the destruction of Jerusalem because of the increased influence of the cult of Baal and Astarte and other fashions imported from affluent neighbors. Our first lesson today is from Zephaniah and Jacqueline, please.

Sing aloud, O daughter Zion, shout, O Israel, rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem. The Lord has taken away the judgments against you. He has turned away your enemies. Thank you so much. Our painting today is The Angel at the Tomb of Christ by Benjamin West. You'll find it maybe at the Brooklyn Museum, where we find all those works by James Tissot, but they also may be in storage, not an unusual thing. Benjamin West was born in 1738 and died in 1820. He was an American-born paint, British painter. He specialized in history paintings, such as the death of Nelson, the death of General Wolfe, and more. He was self-taught, eventually moved to London, where he came under the patronage of George III, who you may remember was influential during the American Revolution. So a traitor. Our painter today, Benjamin West. And now our gospel comes from Mark. And Deacon Diana, please.

Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Now when the centurion who stood facing him saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, Truly this man was God's son. There was also women looking, there were also women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Jabes the younger, and Joseph and Salobi. These used to follow him and provided for him when he was at Galilee. And there were many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem. When evening had come, and since it was the day of preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate wondered if he was already dead, and summoning the centurion he asked him whether he had been dead for some time. When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. Then Joseph bought a linen cloth, and taking down the body, wrapped it in the linen cloth and laid it in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. He then rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joseph, saw where the body was laid. When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James and Salome, bought spices so that they might go and anoint him. Very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb? When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. But he said to them, Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised, he is not here. Look, there is a place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you. The word of the Lord.

This looks like a very old painting, doesn't it? It is not done in the style of this is Sister Mary Charles McGough of uh Saint Mary Magdalene announces the resurrection. Called Apostle of the Apostles by the Orthodox, she was the first person to preach on Easter morning. If you're in San Diego, you'll find this at the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene. Almighty God, whose blessed son restored Mary Magdalene to the health of body and mind, and called her to be a witness to his resurrection. Mercifully grant that by your grace we may be healed of all our infirmities and know you in the power of his endless life, who lives and reigns with you in the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Oh God, call us into a deeper relationship to be your church for the sake of the world. Help us to see with new eyes the injustices within church and society. Call us to have a loving heart that respects and uplifts the humanity and dignity of every person. Open our ears to listen and learn from the experiences of people of color. Open our mouths to speak out about injustices. Join us with others to work for social equity and inclusion for all people.
