Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Roy, the vicar of the Daily Office Network. I'm an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Minnesota. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis to pray morning prayer. We use the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer. We mix an artwork. We have a news story. We come from several different faith traditions in several different countries. All are welcome here, where we do our best to exercise tolerance and decency with one another. Now let's settle in and begin morning prayer. Today is Tuesday, it is the 28th of July 2026. In the life of the church, our saint is Johann Sebastian Bach, a composer who died in the year 1750. The Daily Office Network is posting its service to podcasts Monday through Friday. I actually take this service, edit out our personal prayers, edit out the video and music selection at the end, and that becomes our podcast. You can find us on Apple or Spotify. Let's begin. Then the Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and worshiped the Baals, and they abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. When Abdul Wahhab talks about the proposed Crescent Garden Cemetery, Wahub, a dedicated Muslim burial site, he often returned I'm sorry, that is a re uh a dedicated Muslim burial site. He often returns to a simple reality. People are going to leave this world anyway, he said. We don't have a choice. We need the graves. Wahhab is a board member of the Muslim Mortuary and Cemetery Committee that the nonprofit that has for years tried to move the cemetery plan forward against some local opposition, primarily concerning groundwater contamination. We don't require caskets, but we require cement boxes for everyone, Mahab said, citing California burial regulations. Neighbors' concerns center around the erroneous assumption that bodies are just put into the ground with no container. Traditional Islamic burials generally involve ritual washing and burying the body in a shrouded white cloth as soon as practical after death. This tradition of burying the body without a casket has led some neighboring residents to raise concerns over water pollution. However, the Muslim Mortuary and Cemetery Committee said all burials, over all burials, it requires the deceased to be placed in a cement-covered box. And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Thank you, Jill and Martha. That was a great reading. This artwork is anonymous in nature. It's German, it's medieval. Shamgar, one of the early judges of Israel. These judges didn't interpret the law so much as they were consensus heads of government forerunners of kings in a way, but not call that, for there was only one king, the Lord. Chad, would you lead this?

Now the angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bakam and said, I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and brought you into a land that I promised to your ancestors. I said, I will never break my covenant with you. For your part, do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land. Tear down their altars, but you have not obeyed my command. See what you have done? So now I say I will not drive them out from before you, but they shall become adversaries to you, and their gods shall be a snare to you. And when the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the Israelites, the people lifted up their voices and wept. So they named the place Bakam, that is weepers, and there they sacrificed to the Lord. Then the Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and worshipped the Baals, and they abandoned the Lord, the god of their ancestors, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and bowed down to them, and they provoked the Lord to anger. They abandoned the Lord and the woo and worshipped Baal and Astartes. So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers who plundered them, and he sold them into the power of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. Whenever they marched out the hand of the Lord was against them to bring misfortune, as the Lord warned them and sworn to them, and they were in great distress. Then the Lord raised up judges who delivered them out of the power of those who plundered them. Yet they did not listen even to their judges, for they lusted after other gods and bowed down to them. They soon turned aside from the way in which their ancestors had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord. They did not follow their example. Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge, and he delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge. For the Lord would be moved to pity by their groaning because of those who persecuted and oppressed them. But whenever he the judge died, they would relapse and behave worse than their ancestors, following other gods, worshipping them and bowing down to them. They would not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways. So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he said, Because this people have transgressed my covenant that I commanded their ancestors, and have not obeyed my voice, I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died. In order to test Israel whether or not they would take care to walk in the ways of the Lord as their ancestors did. The Lord left those nations, not driving them out at once, and had not handed them over to Joshua. The word of the Lord.

Avoid them, for such people do not serve our Lord, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the simple minded. For while your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, I want you to be wise in what is good and guileless in what is evil. The God of peace will shortly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Timothy, my co worker, greets you, so do Lucius and Jason and Susapeter, my relatives. I Tertius, the writer of this letter, greet you in the Lord. And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means place of ice skull, they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall. But when he tasted it, he would not drink it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots, when they sat down there and kept watch over him. Over his head they put the charge against him, which read, This is Jesus, the King of the Jews. Then two bandits were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying, You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross. In the same way the chief priests also, along with scribes and elders, were mocking him, saying, He saved others. He cannot save himself. He is the king of Israel. Let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants to, for he said, I am God's son. Thank you, Marcia. A likeness of our saint of the day, Johann Sebastian Bach. J.S. Bach as a young man. He is today regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time, but it was not always so. He achieved fame as an organist while his compositions were mostly forgotten until the mid-19th century, when they were rediscovered, and in many cases published for the very first time. He was a devout Lutheran. Johann Sebastian Bach, our saint of the day. And now two prayers: the collect of the day for Johann Sebastian Bach, who died in 1750, and a collect for the nation. Deacon Elizabeth, would you lead us in these two prayers?

Amen. Thank you, Tucker. And now it's time for our weekly report on military news that's called They Have Names. He was started in 2007 by our late honorary deacon Clint Gillilan, a retired Navy medic. They have names, our service members at home and abroad. They're in danger from the minute that they take the oath. We tell other heroism, and if there are casualties as there are today, we speak their names. We pray for all of them. We pray to God for peace in every nation. So this one's this week's report was a little hard to get because we usually get our information from the source military.com, which is what it says right there. However, military.com did not release all four of these names. In fact, they were redacted shortly after they were released, and it was changed, and there's some stuff going on with our government as far as how they release casualty information. But I was able to garner the information nonetheless. The Pentagon website that informs the public about the dead and the wounded in military conflicts now lists four service members killed in Jordan and Iraq in July under what's called Operations, Overseas Operation Casualties. That's from CBS News. The dead who are pictured above from left to right are Private Isabella Gonzales, 19 years old of Carrollton, Texas. Sergeant Angel S. Rampsand, 28 of Queens, New York. First Lieutenant Tyler James Frehan, 25 of UA Beach, Hawaii, and Sergeant Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30 years old of Fayetteville, North Carolina. The U.S. casualties of the Iran War are mounting, and the Pentagon has recently updated its war database, but scrutiny over the recent fluctuation of numbers remains. On Saturday, this past Saturday, July the 25th, it recorded more than 140 additional wounded servicemen while re-iding the four soldiers above that were killed in Jordan over the previous weekend into a new category after it faced criticism over a lack of transparency. The details and the circumstances surrounding the release of information concerning these heroes killed above is being filtered, and as such, no information was dispersed through military.com. And nonetheless, these four heroes died in service to our country, and they should be remembered. We pray for those that we love on active duty, all of them, but we name a few here Father David, who is a chaplain who is serving, Ian, Logan, Arnold, Dudley, Gina, Raleigh, Janelle, and Amanda and Rob, a married couple who are both serving. Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care in keeping all of the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace, strengthen them in your trials and their trials and temptations, and give them the courage to face the perils which beset them. Grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, amen. O God, the author of peace and the lover of concord, to know you as eternal life, to serve you as perfect freedom, defend us your humble servants in all assaults of our enemies, that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And that's our report, for they have names. Let's remember to pray for our service members at home and abroad, and let's support those who keep the home fires burning.
