Good morning and welcome. I'm Father Tom Roy, the Vicar of the Daily Office Network. I'm an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Minnesota. The Daily Office Network is a community of Christians who gather together on a daily basis to pray morning prayer. We use the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer as our guide. We mix in artwork. You can find us on Apple or Spotify by searching Daily Office Network. In the life of the church today, it is the 4th of August, and there is no recognized saint for today. It's a Tuesday in proper 13. Let's begin. When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets around the whole camp and shout for the Lord and for Gideon. The Progressive National Baptist Convention president David Peoples ended his tenure, leaving the historically black denomination with a plea for members of its churches to do everything they could to get people in their churches and in their homes out to the polls for the November midterm elections. You ought to tell them that we have no choice but to vote, he declared from a ballroom at the Omni Shoreham Hotel on the last night of the denomination's annual session, which was Wednesday, July the 22nd. And then he said, it's a sin if you do not vote. He also said, he also suggested not allowing people to attend who didn't vote attend church. This pending election is a serious election, and everyone needs to have their voice heard. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Then Jerubabel, that is Gideon, and all the troops that were in with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Herod, and the camp of Midian was north of them, below the hill of Moray in the valley. The Lord said to Gideon, The troops you are you the troops with you are too many for me to give you the Midianites into their hand. Israel would only take the credit away from me, saying, Mine own hand has delivered me. Now therefore proclaim this in the hearing of the troops. Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home. Thus Gideon sifted them out. Twenty two thousand returned, and ten thousand remain. Then the Lord said to Gideon, The troops are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will sift them out for you there. When I say this one shall go with you, he shall go with you, and when I say this one shall not go with you, he shall not go. So he brought the troops down to the water, and the Lord said to Gideon, All those who lap the water with their tongues, as a dog laps, you shall put to one side, and all those who kneel down to drink, putting their hands to their mouths, you shall put to the other side. The number of those that lapped was three hundred, but the rest of the troops knelt down to drink the water. The Lord said to Gideon, with the three hundred that lapped I will deliver you, and give the Midianites into your hand. Let all the others go to their homes. So he took the jars of the troops from their hands and their trumpets, and he sent out all the rest of Israel back to their own tents, but retained the three hundred. The camp of Midian was below him in the valley. That same night the Lord said to him, Get up, attack the camp, for I have given it into your hand. But if you fear to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Pyrrh, and you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to attack the camp. Then when he went down with his servant Pyrrh to the outposts of the armed men that were in the camp, the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the east lay along the valley as thick as locusts, and their camels were without number, countless as the sand on the seashore. When Gideon arrived, there was a man telling a dream to his comrade, and he said, I had a dream, and in it a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell. It turned upside down, and the tent collapsed. And his comrade answered, This is none other than the sword of Gideon, son of Joash, a man of Israel, into his hand God has given Midian and all the army. When Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshipped. And he returned to the camp of Israel and said, Get up, for the Lord has given the army of Midian into your hand. After he divided three hundred men into three companies, he put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars with torches inside the jars. He said to them, Look at me and do the same. When I come to the outside of the camp, do as I do. When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets around the camp and shout for the Lord and for Gideon. One day, Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer at three o'clock in the afternoon, and a man lame from birth was being carried in. People would lay him daily at the gate of the temple called the beautiful gate, that so that he could ask for arms from those entering the temple. When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked them for arms. Peter looked intently at him, as did John and said, Look at us. And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, I have no silver or gold, but what I give you is the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Stand up and walk. And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong, jumping up. He stood and began to walk, and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. All the people saw him walking and praising God, and they recognized him as one who had used to sit and ask for arms at the beautiful gate of the temple. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. While he clung to Pete and John, all the people ran together to them in the portico called Solomon's Portico, utterly astonished. The word of the Lord.

Sure. This is a testimony given by John when he when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you? He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed. I am not the Messiah. And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? He said, I am not. Are you the prophet? He answered, No. Then they said to him, Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who send us. What do you say about yourself? He said, I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness. Make straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah nor Elijah nor the prophets? John answered them, I baptized with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me. I'm not worthy to untie the tongue of his sandal. This took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. It's a photograph I took when I was in Spokane. I'm sure it looks a lot different now with the fires and their mandatory evacuation of Spokane County, parts of Spokane County. These are the spires of the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lords in downtown Spokane, and they tower above the other buildings. Amen. Thank you, Jacqueline. And now it's time for our weekly report on military news called They Have Names. It was started in 2007 by our late honorary deacon Clint Gillilan, a retired Navy medic. They have names, our service members at home and abroad. They're in danger from the minute that they take the oath. We tell of their heroism, and if there are casualties, we speak their names. We pray for all of them and we pray to God for peace in every nation. And here's where things stand this week. We have no casualties in war to be reported this week. There may be some, but they have not been released. But I did find a story that I thought was worth talking about today. Transfers of sailors who are under criminal investigation for sexual assault must be coordinated with law enforcement. Seems like a normal policy, and approved by the receiving commander under a Navy policy change, which was prompted by the killing of a sailor. In other words, the policy was not in effect until someone died. In June, seaman apprentice Jeremiah Copeland admitted to strangling Rosendez in his barracks room at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. We reported on that sometime back. He concealed her body in a suitcase before dumping it at a nearby wooded area. He was sentenced by a military judge to 44 years in prison as part of a plea bargain that included guilty pleas to four other charges. This change to policy, the transfer policy, is an attempt by the Navy to prevent suspects under their investigation from fleeing or by transferring to another ship at sea or another duty station where they might be difficult to locate an interview, thereby impeding the investigations. Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care in keeping all of the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad, defend them day by day with your heavenly grace, strengthen them in their trials and their temptations, give them courage to face the perils which beset them, and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they be, wherever they may be, through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen. And a collect for peace. O God, the author of peace and the lover of concord, to know you as eternal life, to serve you as perfect freedom, defend us your humble servants, and all assaults of our enemies, that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And that's our report, for they have names. Let's remember to pray for our service members, their families, their friends, and support those who keep the home fires burning. We'll continue with the prayer for the mission of the church. I'm going to ask Marcia to lead this for us, and then I'll bless the Lord and bless us.
