SPEAKER_01

They came to the school.

SPEAKER_00

The battery boys?

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_01

What? Absolutely. Not even kidding. And performed. And it was like they had to have been like brand new.

SPEAKER_00

That was they just performed? Like they didn't have a motivational thing.

SPEAKER_01

No.

SPEAKER_00

Why the fuck did the school pay for that?

SPEAKER_01

Don't know.

SPEAKER_00

Welcome, everybody, to Comedyville Horror Podcast. We are your hosts. I'm Russ. I'm Tosh. So grab a libation, grab a coffee, grab a whatever you want.

SPEAKER_01

Whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Sit on down, because this week we're talking about Donnie Darko.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

The most emo fucking movie ever.

SPEAKER_01

OMG.

SPEAKER_00

But this week we're going to do.

SPEAKER_01

That's why I have my Jenko jeans on. Jenko jeans. Yeah, baby.

SPEAKER_00

But we're going to do it a little different than we normally do movie reviews. So since this movie, for one, isn't even like a horror movie.

SPEAKER_01

It's weird though.

SPEAKER_00

But we're going to just run through the movie instead of doing a scene by scene. We're just going to kind of glance over the movie and then we're going to get into what the movie is supposed to be about. Yeah, what the meaning behind the movie, the Yeah, because I have no flipping idea. Nobody does.

SPEAKER_01

Well no.

SPEAKER_00

But we'll get into that.

SPEAKER_02

But first, how you been?

SPEAKER_01

Good. I've, you know, it's been a pretty good start to April.

SPEAKER_00

Um how how was your Easter?

SPEAKER_01

Easter was good. Uh just kind of well celebrated the day before, which I know he was not risen yet, um, but had some family crud, you know, going on. And um, you know, for the Easter celebration, it was not the typical ham, we went to a Mexican restaurant.

SPEAKER_00

That's sacrilegious. Jesus would be turning over in his Middle Eastern grave.

SPEAKER_01

Well So to um my defense and our sister's defense, it was due to uh poor planing. No, one of the so one of the twins' girlfriends or whatever went through like the classes to go through like a confirmation and a communion or something.

SPEAKER_00

Was this late in life?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. That's strange. She was baptized, but like then wanted to go through like and do the classes and stuff to anyways. So this is like the adult like version of like the ceremony, and so it's all these people that have gone through these classes. It started at 8 p.m. What? And I'm like, no. Why it's like a three-hour ceremony. Why start that late? Yeah, they weren't done until like 11. And then they have like some sort of reception in the basement of the church with like booze and like is is this a Catholic thing?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, because for some reason, Catholics can't do anything in a timely manner. No, it has to take fucking forever.

SPEAKER_01

So I said, absolutely not. I will not go to that ceremony, but I would like to go for appetizers before.

SPEAKER_00

And then then they're like, no, you have to go to all of it.

SPEAKER_01

And I said, no, there's no way. So decided to go to a Mexican restaurant um where it like I felt like they treated it like it was a birthday or like a quincenata or something, and brought out like this freaking skull with a shot of tequila. There's like firecracker things, and like what is happening? It was wild.

SPEAKER_00

Was it called like uh El Diablo?

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. I don't know. It was it was insane. So, anyways, after that, I um actually tried to watch like a religious show on Netflix.

SPEAKER_00

What why?

unknown

I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

Because you need to say Jesus in your life?

SPEAKER_01

Probably. You're like, I should do something cheese.

SPEAKER_00

And then something with a bunny.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, which I don't know why. Why is it that we hide eggs? It's but it's a rabbit. Rabbits give live birth.

SPEAKER_00

It's it's fertility. It's all a symbol of fertility.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, and like rebirth and like resurrection.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's taken from pagans because Christianity they cannot come up with their own shit. Like the the whole this whole story of Easter is taken from other religions. Well, I feel like it's pieced together, and then there's chicks and things like the the Son of God, Jesus, uh, was the sun god.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm. And which is like the Mayan during like the winter culture, which is why the Mexican restaurant was appropriate.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

During like the the winter, is it solstice or whatever? Yeah. So you know how in the south the sun keeps going lower and lower and lower? Well, for three days it stops. And then it rises.

SPEAKER_01

Which is on the third day he rose again and all the things.

SPEAKER_00

Yep. Christianity can't fucking come up with anything. They have to steal shit from everything else.

SPEAKER_01

Well. Um, and then on Easter, I did I got to do a little fishing. So that was a little bit more. Did you catch anything? Yes, I caught so many bluegill that I couldn't even count. Which was not what I was targeting. Keep them and eat them or I mean I could have, but that wasn't what I I was like targeting a specific fish.

SPEAKER_00

Stupid. You like fish sticks?

SPEAKER_01

Stop it.

SPEAKER_00

What do you a gay fish? They're so ridiculous.

SPEAKER_01

Uh yeah, but anyways, how was your Easter?

SPEAKER_00

I didn't do anything for Easter, because fuck that.

SPEAKER_01

Nothing at all.

SPEAKER_00

Uh well, before Easter, we we went to a a show at a local bar and it was fun. Insert video here. Future me. And then also enter another video here feature me.

SPEAKER_01

Come on churros. That sounds also Mexican.

SPEAKER_00

No, they are very white.

SPEAKER_01

Oh. I uh cause that was maybe I'm thinking of churros.

SPEAKER_00

We uh I was talking to them and we might do we might try and like collab on some stuff like we'll be on their stream and then we can have them be on ours.

SPEAKER_01

I like it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they're down for it.

SPEAKER_01

Really?

SPEAKER_00

So sweet. Maybe in the future. We'll see. The logistics. I mean, I might have to fire somebody for constantly changing the schedule. You are replaceable.

SPEAKER_01

I am so not.

SPEAKER_00

I have other siblings.

SPEAKER_01

That's right. Well, not as fun as this one, I'll tell you what. So don't tell them that.

SPEAKER_00

So uh I'll keep a schedule. Why don't we get into Donnie Darko? Because it's Easter.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Everybody knows Donnie Darko and the fucking rabbit. Which is me.

SPEAKER_01

It's terrifying. I that is the most terrifying rabbit in that movie.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's freaky. Surprised I didn't have nightmares.

SPEAKER_00

So and because this came out in 2001. That was like prime, like just before like the emo stuff hit. Because I want to say, like the emo and scene kids were like like full throttle in like 2005. And I think this movie like fucking kicked it all off.

SPEAKER_01

Jake who's that Jake Gyllenhaal?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Or Gillen Hall. Because it starts with a G.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe? I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

And his sister.

SPEAKER_02

His actual sister, isn't it? As his sister. Oh, really? Yeah, you didn't know you didn't know they're fucking Oh no.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Now it's all coming back to me. Yeah, they're actual brother and sister.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, okay. Okay. His eyelashes are amazing.

unknown

Wow.

SPEAKER_01

They're just something. But wow, yeah, like 2001, crazy times.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, you know what I uh found out this morning when I was uh like just looking at like the cast and stuff.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

The Dr. Robbie in the pit was in this movie.

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_00

He was the the teacher that gave him the book.

SPEAKER_01

Really?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that was Dr. Robbie.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh, now I'm gonna have to go back and look.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I was like, wait, what? I just watched this last night. How did I miss that?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, don't tell me because I haven't watched that one. Mm-mm. I love The Pit.

SPEAKER_00

No, I mean, no, not the Pit, but I mean I watched the Donnie Darko last night. Oh, and you didn't And I didn't I watched it and I was like, hmm. He looks familiar, but I I think it's because he doesn't have the beard that I didn't recognize him. Instantly side-by-side picture here. Yeah, fucking uh 25 years younger. I know. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_01

I know. I want to look him up. Um okay, this movie, I like I what the hell is happening?

SPEAKER_00

Like, yeah, so so the movie starts out. Um, so shows Donnie Donald.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Uh Trump. I mean uh Tarko.

SPEAKER_02

Jesus. Here we go.

SPEAKER_00

Like he's like laying in the the road on like a a fucking mountain that's on a curve. If there was a single car that went through that, he would have been splattered.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But he fucking he wakes up and he starts riding his bike, and so it kind of sets up that he sleepwalks.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

That like he he didn't know how he got there, sort of shit.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, something or he was on drugs.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, well, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Uh I guess he kind of was, right? Psych meds.

SPEAKER_00

So here's here's what I didn't realize. I watched the director's cut.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, shit. Well, I didn't know which one I was supposed to watch.

SPEAKER_00

Well, but it was the DVD that I had was it happened to be the director's cut. So there's a part in it that isn't on the regular? Yeah, and that like kind of almost totally changes like the movie because the therapist says you can stop taking your meds, they're placebos anyways.

SPEAKER_01

Oh so that like kind of talks or f tells you like why hey, it stopped taking his meds.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Well, no, uh, because they doubled his meds, then he started taking them. So, but it wasn't doing anything, so it was still a placebo. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Well that makes a little bit more sense. Not at all.

SPEAKER_00

Well, okay, so October 2nd of 1988. Um then we have uh Donnie Darko. He's sleepwalking, and he's being led by a voice.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Right? So we meet the the Frank, which is a six-foot-tall bunny rabbit.

unknown

So scary. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

Um, and Frank tells Donnie that the world is gonna end in precisely 28 days. He tells him like the exact time. Twelve hours and 12 seconds. I don't know. I did not write that too. No, I didn't either.

SPEAKER_01

Uh he wrote it on his arm, though.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And I've seen people like they'll get that tattooed on their arm, and it's like it's a sad movie.

SPEAKER_01

It's real I know. That's really depressing.

SPEAKER_00

Why why do you want to be constantly reminded of a depressing movie?

SPEAKER_01

I mean, you do have the shining carpet on your arm, but yeah, but that's happy.

SPEAKER_00

The shining was a true love story of how he loved his family so much that he had to kill them.

SPEAKER_01

That is true.

SPEAKER_00

So, anyways, then uh then Donnie wakes up the next morning uh on a golf course.

SPEAKER_01

Uh, then he returns home and discovers that Did you also see that it's Patrick Swayze?

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I miss him.

SPEAKER_00

Well, this movie was um But anyway, so Donnie gets back to the house and finds out that a jet engine crashed through his bedroom, and if he would have been there, it would have killed him.

SPEAKER_01

Correct. Um and his older sister, Elizabeth Which is his real sister, I guess.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, tells him that the FAA uh don't know where the fuck it came from. Which it's kind of one of those things like I'm sure there there have been real like unsolved shit.

SPEAKER_01

Didn't they just lose a plane somewhere?

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'm like, I don't know. That's kind of a large item to just not be able to find.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because like uh just the engine off of a fucking plane, you would find out real fucking quick where it came from.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's pretty large.

SPEAKER_00

Uh so then like kind of skipping like a whole bunch of stuff, but then uh over the next few days, Donnie he keeps talking with Frank. So then his parents send him to a psychotherapist where he's been going for yeah, but like things are getting worse or something. And the whole uh dinner scene was so funny because he's he's like, What did he say? You're a fuck ass.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then his sister's why don't you stuck a fuck? And he's like, I just won't exactly stuck a fuck.

SPEAKER_01

The little the little sister, what's a suck ass?

SPEAKER_00

What's a fuck ass?

SPEAKER_01

What's a fuck ass or something? And I love that the dad's like smiling, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like the dad was the best one because like he didn't give it a anything that Donnie did the whole movie, he would just laugh about.

SPEAKER_01

Even when he got in trouble at school, he was like, okay.

SPEAKER_00

So uh yeah, so Donnie's uh seeing the psychotherapist, uh Dr. Truman. Truman?

SPEAKER_01

Something like that.

SPEAKER_00

Um and she believes that Donnie is detached from reality and he's having visions. Uh she calls them daylight hallucinations.

SPEAKER_01

So I guess the opposite of sundowners. I mean, I don't know. Uh I have those two sometimes.

SPEAKER_00

It's a symptom of paranoid schizophrenia.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, okay. Just kidding, I don't.

SPEAKER_00

But that's to me, that seemed like such a like a health thing is like instead of like finding out what's actually wrong, they just like blanket-try to label it. Yeah, like blanket statement, like it's probably this.

SPEAKER_01

Because it sounds more like like a dissociative disorder.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

Like you can like detach your like do you ever do you ever have like dreams where they're so vivid that you almost can like detach yourself from your body knowing that you're dreaming? Like, have you ever like had a dream where like you feel like you're like looking down on yourself sleeping?

SPEAKER_00

Not so much of like looking down, but like where I'm dreaming of like literally laying in bed sleeping.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but like do you see yourself? Like in your mind, you don't see yourself sleeping.

SPEAKER_00

No. Like I see through my eyes, like like I would. Like I I don't ever like see myself. I don't even know what the fuck I look like.

SPEAKER_01

Oh God. You should watch your podcast.

SPEAKER_00

I know I do. I'm I'm the fucking guy that edits it. I know.

SPEAKER_01

Oh gosh. I just fuck up the schedule.

SPEAKER_00

So um yeah. So uh where are we?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, the fucking So she it calls tells him like it's or thinks it's schizophrenia.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so and then this like plays into a lot of the movie was it's almost like he was trying to convince his family that he's not mentally ill.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, even though clearly there's something wrong with you, buddy.

SPEAKER_00

The uh the hypnosis scene was funny because the therapist uh hypnotized him and then he starts talking about like wanting to fuck girls. Yeah, and then the the therapist was like, What about your family? He's like, I don't want to fuck my family. As he's like unbuttoning his pants, and then she like claps.

SPEAKER_01

Like, no, please don't do it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. What a prude. Like, at least let him finish. Like, goddamn. He's gonna have blue balls.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I guess.

SPEAKER_00

If I were, I would have let him do it? Well, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Sick idea.

SPEAKER_00

Like, what I'm not a fucking Nazi.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you leave the room?

SPEAKER_00

No, I'm well, I mean, I'd have to watch to make sure he's doing it safely.

SPEAKER_01

Oh dear God.

SPEAKER_00

Uh so then uh he he talked to Frank some more, and Frank asked Donnie if he believes in time travel. And this this kicks off like what actually is going on, sort of thing.

SPEAKER_01

Because then he gets a book.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. So he yeah, he asked his science teacher uh about time travel, and then the the teacher gives him a book, The Philosophy of Time Travel, written by Roberta Sparrow, who was a former science teacher at that school.

SPEAKER_01

And a lady that lived nearby.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. Who is uh a super old woman that like uh keeps standing in the middle of the road because she keeps checking her mailbox. And everyone knows her as grandma death. So Frank begins to uh kind of coax Donnie to start doing uh just weird shit. Well, like illegal shit.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um like light shit on fire.

SPEAKER_00

But it's also because Donnie explained uh later of when he was young, he burned down a house. So it's almost like not that far fetched.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

You know, that he would be doing all these things. So like while he's sleepwalking, uh he's he broke into the school and broke the water main and flooded it. Right. And also like stabbed the fuck out of that bulldog statue with the axe.

SPEAKER_01

That bulldog statue is wild.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. Um so then uh then it's like we meet Gretchen, uh, who's a new kid, and her story was sad because it was like I know her fucking stepdad like stabbed the fuck out of her mom.

SPEAKER_01

And so then they had to like leave and hide and change their names.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um Who is she?

SPEAKER_01

What was she in? She's been in like a bunch of shit, hasn't she?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I don't know. Oh, probably.

SPEAKER_01

I know. I need to look her up too.

SPEAKER_00

So anyway, then we the fucking the goddamn gym teacher in this movie. Like that's like super religious.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

And 'cause they're it's a private school. Cause they they're all wearing uniforms and shit.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_00

But like for the gym teacher to be like this into like this fucking local author.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's kinda weird.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

The whackadoodle.

SPEAKER_00

Uh Mrs. What, Kitty Farmer?

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Um, yeah, so then she's she's having these weird like attitude lessons for the kids and like just fucking let them play basketball, you fucking cunt.

SPEAKER_01

Right? Like don't fucking nobody wants to like it's gym class.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, exactly. Like let out the energy. Don't don't be like telling them like fear and love. Like fucking throw them some dodgeballs.

SPEAKER_01

And then you've it's like, you think that's not it? Fear and love is the only I don't know. He like freaks out on her, which was fantastic.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because they they had to read like a scenario and it had to either be fear or love.

SPEAKER_01

Which what she was describing was neither one of those.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Or like what like little snippet they had to like that's stupid.

SPEAKER_00

And that's why because then he he starts like going off on yeah, cha-up. Cha-up. And I had the subtitles on because I'm fucking deaf and can't uh same.

SPEAKER_01

Cha-up.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, C-H-U-T.

SPEAKER_01

That's the little Asian gal.

SPEAKER_00

Um but then she's all involved with this motivational author. Uh what was his name? Jim, Jim Cunningham, who was Patrick Swayze. Yes. Yeah, because Cunningham has a school assembly for some reason.

SPEAKER_01

I know. I couldn't like was he like just like coming in as like the motivational speaker or something? Like it didn't really.

SPEAKER_00

When I was in high school, we had this weird, like uh religious thing. And I went to public school.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, really?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was weird. It was like like an abstinence thing where the lady was like, don't fuck until you're at least 45 years old.

SPEAKER_01

Really?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was strange. I I don't know why, and I'm sure our school paid a bunch of money to have this dumb fucking bitch talk.

SPEAKER_01

We had um gosh, was it sixth, fifth, sixth grade? I don't know, but it was like right when the backstreet boys like started when they were like really.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah, when all the teenage girls were just dripped.

SPEAKER_01

They came to the school.

SPEAKER_00

The backstreet boys?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, no, what absolutely, not even kidding, and performed. And it was like they had to have been like brand new.

SPEAKER_00

That would they just performed? Like they didn't have a motivational thing. No, why the fuck did the school pay for that?

SPEAKER_01

Don't know. Don't even know. I'm not kidding. I think I was wearing a Metallica ride the lightning t-shirt. That's right.

SPEAKER_00

The goddamn bleachers were just pouring with pussy juices.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah, there's too little for that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but that was yeah, it didn't matter. Like they did their dance moves and like boy bands were like the period of like the 90s, early 2000s, like just fucking like I think it was when they were like in like the Mickey Mouse Club or something, you know, like Oh really?

SPEAKER_01

Like, yeah, I don't know, whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Or no, it was only a couple of them that were in the Mickey Mouse Cup. But JT and Justin Timberlake.

SPEAKER_01

That's JT.

SPEAKER_00

Oh. Uh so anyways, back to the movie. So he has he has this assembly thing or whatever. And so then uh Donnie goes off on him uh and tells him that he's like, Well, I think you're the fucking antichrist.

unknown

Oh I know.

SPEAKER_00

Um, we'll skip ahead a little. Oh, and Donnie is walking down the street and he finds Patrick Swayze's wallet, like right in front of the guy's house, and then like you hear like Frank tell him, like, now you know where he lives.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. Then uh let's see. The uh oh, Gretchen and Donnie, they go to a movie theater, and then that bitch just fucking falls asleep right away.

SPEAKER_01

Like immediately. Yeah. Who does that?

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. And why is and they're watching fucking Evil Dead.

SPEAKER_01

I know, but why is nobody else in the theater?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's kind of weird.

SPEAKER_00

So then uh then he's talking to Donnie's talking to Frank in the movie theater while Gretchen's asleep. He tells him to like take his mask off.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then we see that it's a a teenage boy with like his eyes all fucked up.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

That's where I'm like, who are these people? Like, I it had been so many years since I had watched this, so it was Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's probably been like 10 years since I last watched it.

SPEAKER_01

Probably 15 or something for me. So then uh So he leaves the theater.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so Frank convinces Donnie, he says, uh, burn it down. So then Donnie gets up and just fucking walks right out of there.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And puts his fucking little tiny hood up, which is funny. Um then he goes to Cunningham's house and burns the fucker down.

SPEAKER_01

Just throws gasoline all over that bitch.

SPEAKER_00

Yep. Uh so then he walks back to the movie theater and just sits down and then boom, the movie's over.

SPEAKER_01

And all she wakes up, she's like, Oh, did I fall asleep? It's like, yeah, it's okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so then uh the firefighters discover that there was a um have to be careful with how I say it, uh, because of YouTube. Um a CP dens.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yes. Uh-huh. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Because he's crazy's house. Uh so then he's a bad guy, even though he's like all religious and telling people how to like live their life.

SPEAKER_01

You're kind of kind of a dirty man there.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. So the kitty farmer, the fucking bitch, gym teacher, she has to go and testify at his court. So then that means that she can't go on the girls' trip to the dance, like whatever it's something like that.

SPEAKER_01

No, it was like, um, oh god, what was it?

SPEAKER_00

Because this was in '88, so it would have been It was the Ed McMahon something star.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Dancing with the No, not dancing with the that was a big thing, though.

SPEAKER_00

Didn't they go all around? Every city had a gosh.

SPEAKER_01

And I remember mom wanted to watch it all the time. What the heck was it called?

SPEAKER_00

Star Search.

SPEAKER_01

Star Search, yes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. And we would watch it.

SPEAKER_00

Because that was like the first American idol. Yeah. Like before any of that.

SPEAKER_01

Pretty much. It was like a talent search thing and you like vote on them and then you'd get voted on.

SPEAKER_00

Like that was like a big scam.

SPEAKER_01

Was like Oh, I'm sure people paid money to like the win. Because you'd be like, Yeah, I think it was like fortune sucked.

SPEAKER_00

How much money you gave them determined how far you got.

SPEAKER_01

Because it wasn't let's see.

SPEAKER_00

So then that means that uh Donnie's mom has to go and chaperone the girls to this event. So the mom is gone, and also the dad was gone on a business trip. So what do teenage kids do?

SPEAKER_01

They fucking You throw a fucking dang at party.

SPEAKER_00

Because his sister Elizabeth got accepted in a Harvard, which is wild because she took a year off.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't think that can happen.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I think if it seems if they think you're real fucking intelligent. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So he's like, we're gonna throw a party. She's like, well, maybe just a few people. And it is a full-on costume house party.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So uh at the party, uh, Gretchen was all fucking horned up. Well, she was all fucking sad. Yeah, because uh she got home and her her mom was gone and the house was messed. She's like, I know my fucking stepdad is there fucking stabbing the shit out of her again or something like that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but I guess this is where I'm gonna come is to a house party.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, she's like, I I gotta go to a house party and get fucked.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Because her and Donnie.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. He takes her right upstairs.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. Yep. They bang.

SPEAKER_01

And then uh they make out outside even more.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so this was uh so Donnie realizes after this thing that it was like, oh fuck, the end of the world is it's coming. Yeah, it's gonna happen soon. So he takes Gretchen and two of his friends to go to the grandma death, the Roberta Sparrow's house.

SPEAKER_01

To go talk about.

SPEAKER_00

To because he needs to he needs answers for what the fuck is gonna happen.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, what's the time travel?

SPEAKER_00

So they get there, uh, and then the two high school bullies are there in the house fucking robbing her.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

And then they uh get into a fight outside, and Gretchen falls to the ground.

SPEAKER_01

I know.

SPEAKER_00

This this is the whole end of this movie is.

SPEAKER_01

It was I was like, what in the hell?

SPEAKER_00

Yep. And then a was it like a fucking Transam or something. Like a red transam comes fucking racing around the corner and fucking runs over Gretchen.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

And kills her. And then we see that it was Elizabeth's boyfriend, Frank, in a bunny suit. Mm-hmm, uh gets out of the car.

SPEAKER_01

Which is the dark Donnie Darko, suit.

SPEAKER_00

And then what happens to him?

SPEAKER_01

Well, Donnie has a gun and shoots him in the fucking eye.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

So kills him, but tells the other guy to leave.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he just says go home.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'm like, okay, well he was part of it.

SPEAKER_00

So then he uh Donnie carries Gretchen to the house, which it it was like daylight. Like I said, I know.

SPEAKER_01

I'm like, did you just lay there with her for a hot minute?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um so then he he finds that there's a vortex above his house forming. So he uh steals one of the parents' cars and puts her fucking dead body in it. Which so this was like strange to me. Like, why why was this because he he drives up to like an overlook.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I thought he was a dead body.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

And like he's just like looking at the vortex and then because when he's when he's on the the ridge, he's like, I know what I have to do now. Yeah, but And then he he goes home.

SPEAKER_01

Right. So where's her body?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, exactly. Like what did he do? Yeah, what was the whole point of him going out there?

SPEAKER_01

Uh to look at the vortex. Like he couldn't just go home and see it above his house.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_01

Like, I don't know, that was weird.

SPEAKER_00

Cause then he was like, I I know what I have to do. And then he like just goes and fucking like lays in bed.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Because he sees the uh the plane engine coming down, which was the engine off of his mother and sister's younger sister's plane.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

So this is where it gets real fucking sad.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

So uh the engine kills Donnie.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So comes right out of the room.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we're back to October 2nd.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Um and then uh like the kind of a lot of people are out and about in the town, like, you know, looking at like what the fuck happened. So then it it like kind of shows like like when he died, it was like everybody like felt something.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You know, like they didn't know what what it was, sort of thing. But they all like felt like something happened.

SPEAKER_01

Like something weird, like they had obviously crossed paths with him.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, in another dimension.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Okay, so I mean Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh because then it it showed like the Gretchen riding by on a bike and like uh talking to like a little boy, like what happened.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And she was like, What was his name?

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

And he's he's like, Donnie, Donnie Darko. And then Gretchen and the mom have like a where they wave at each other, like kind of deja vu, kind of a like I've seen you. Yeah, but I I don't know where.

SPEAKER_01

And then the little boy, suddenly at the end, I'm like after they had already waved, it was I'm like, okay, kid.

SPEAKER_00

Yep. And that's it. That that was the movie. So let's get into what there so this movie has the most of any other movie like I've ever watched, the most uh what do you what do we want to call it? Like theories on what actually it's about.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like film theory and all of that, and true meaning of the movie. Because there's a thousand different ways that this goes.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

Uh one of them is like a very religious one, because it they do talk about religion in it. And one that I saw was uh that Donnie Darko is a more human version of Jesus.

SPEAKER_02

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

Because uh so and Satan was the Bonnie Frank? No, the pedophile.

SPEAKER_01

Oh because he calls him the Antichrist. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh and in his speech that he's given to the kids, he says there's three uh sins or whatever. Uh drugs, alcohol, and fornicating.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

And Jesus was tempted by the devil three times.

SPEAKER_01

Oh. So But then there was something with 28 days, isn't it? I'm trying to think.

SPEAKER_00

Is that yeah, that movie 28 Days Later.

SPEAKER_01

What? Yeah, but it's like something 28 weeks? I don't know, but there's something No, shut up. There's something in the Bible, though. Isn't it Revelations is 28 days?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, probably.

SPEAKER_01

Or something like that. I don't know. I whatever. Depends on what version of the Bible you read. But so I could see that.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, so and then there's so there's also like theories on like, is it more about time travel? Or is it more on the tangent uh dimensions? Because there's so it kind of starts with like Well, those weird like vortex thing. They're the tunneling like coming out of the chest. Yeah, the liquid spear.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh where like Donnie had like a almost a special power of where he could see the future of what a person is doing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. It's super weird.

SPEAKER_00

Um so and then there's also so the grandma death, that's a theory of that not so this happens all the time, right? And it's like most people don't know because like the 28 days uh isn't known in our universe because it's almost like it loops around and starts a whole different future. Right? Right. So that it's constantly happening, but we wouldn't know it because it would just be like everyday life.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

Uh so there's been a bunch of people in this same situation, and one of the theories is that Grandma Death that wrote the book was one of the few people that lived through it, and that's why she wrote the book.

SPEAKER_01

And maybe why she keeps looping to go to the mailbox.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. That she she had lived or like time travel and like knew that something was going to, so she just kept waiting like her whole life.

SPEAKER_01

For something to happen. Weird.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. I mean, I there's yeah, there's so many theories. Cause then I was like, well, or is this just like all about mental illness?

SPEAKER_00

And like Yeah, that was you know, like, I mean And it's so sad because like in the movie, it was Donnie kept trying to like convince his parents, he's like, I'm I'm not sick. You know? He's like, my brain is okay, and it's sad.

SPEAKER_01

I know, it is really sad. Like in that the song at the end, oh fuck, it's I know it's like I was like, okay, well, I guess I'm gonna watch this and then try not to cry myself to sleep.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. But what what what do you think the movie was more about? Like, what do you think it was the dimensions or time travel? Or like how how do you I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I feel like there was a deeper meaning behind it and also like what you do every day and your choices that you make, and having that little right, like good and evil, like good and evil telling you, right? Like you know how to how you should, and society allows you, or states that you should act and do things, but then maybe you have the devil on your shoulder saying you need to do this, this, this, and this. And also like that that kind of um what choices you make, that's what your future Yeah, like the the predetermined like destiny.

SPEAKER_00

Like this is like your fate no matter what. And yeah, I think for that that 28 days, every single person was leading Donnie to this specific path that he had to make this.

SPEAKER_01

But ultimately at the end, it was his decision.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, to be sacrificed on the cross.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and like knowing where to go and what to do to like have the shit crash into your bedroom. You know what I mean? Like super weird.

SPEAKER_00

Because yeah, because in his mind it was I have to sacrifice myself to save the world.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um to save my town.

SPEAKER_00

And and that's another, like, is is it just about like destiny? Like, no matter what you do, it's your your fate's already written. Yeah. Because he like totally changed in that 28 days, you know? And either way, he would have still gotten to that same conclusion, whether he did things differently, right?

SPEAKER_01

Right. Yeah. I mean, I guess. I don't know. I I think I would I would lean more towards that, right? Like that it is like your this is your fate. It's already written. Like, I don't know. I'm a firm believer in like you have, you know, I don't know. Two paths. Two two paths.

SPEAKER_00

The righteous, the righteous path, and then the extreme.

SPEAKER_01

Extreme. Um, but like you have two uh true surprises in your life. The day you're born, right? We don't know, we don't remember. But like you don't know. You don't know when that water is gonna break and when you're it's a surprise for whoever whoever's giving birth, maybe.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Well, then that wouldn't be your life. That's not a surprise to be. To begin life isn't a surprise.

SPEAKER_01

But you you don't know, it's not like you're that's what I'm saying. Like you don't feel like I'm ready to go, and like flying out of your mom's who I know.

SPEAKER_00

I bet I fucking but I bet she had to staple it shed just to keep me in there.

SPEAKER_01

But also, then your second true surprise or fate is death.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I I understand the death part because it can happen at any time. Or you're just fucking waiting to die and you're like, God, it's Lord, please take me.

SPEAKER_01

Do you feel like your book's already written? Like some higher power like knows when your time is up.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe I should start going to church. I need some Jesus in my life. Oh no. I'm kidding. Fuck. Um So also I do want to say Don't put your finger in the holy water. I do want to say that this movie, there's a lot of fucking thinking.

SPEAKER_01

It was pretty it was pretty intense.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Like I had to like it was entertaining.

SPEAKER_01

I had to switch to water.

SPEAKER_00

But it was like, yeah, I just so I could like pay attention. I know I got real drunk last night when I was watching it.

SPEAKER_01

But I could hear the the clanking of the ice cubes.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But uh the problem too is uh Is this a horror movie?

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. I mean, I remember when I watched it about 15 years ago, maybe 20.

SPEAKER_00

Because like when I watched it, I was like I was scared. Oh, I don't remember. I don't know if this is technically a horror movie. For one, there was no tits in it.

SPEAKER_01

But it's I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

It's more of like a psychological thriller.

SPEAKER_01

I would say yes.

SPEAKER_00

On a darker side.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm. It was pretty dark. So we'll go with that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And the fucking rabbit was terrifying.

SPEAKER_00

So do you want to rate this movie or should we just skip it all together?

SPEAKER_01

I think we should just skip the rating because it's really it's really based on how you would view it.

SPEAKER_00

See, and that's the thing is why we can't take what you want out of it. Yeah, like we can't rate a movie where the interpret interpretation is the biggest part of the movie. So like I mean, we could we could rate it on like the film.

SPEAKER_01

Because it was a good movie. I think for 2001 and for it really truly making you like think and some of the effects and things.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I'd give it like a good like 85.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, just on like on the movie itself.

SPEAKER_01

But like also filming the little bit more of a explanation on a couple of things.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So like I kind of know where the But I think too, like the the director wanted it to be very which I mean it's kind of like, yeah, exactly. It's kind of like because of it being so ambiguous, uh everybody talks about it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

We're literally talking about it.

SPEAKER_01

Like you write your own ending, huh?

SPEAKER_00

Well, I mean, there was an ending. It's you write piecing together why and how.

SPEAKER_01

Right. But you write the conclusion of what truly this is about.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. An obstacle conclusion.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So I liked it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean, like just based on the movie, sure. I would totally give it I'd give it a 75.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

You know, like had a lot of uh great actors in it. Yeah. Um I know.

SPEAKER_01

Who there was another Seth Rogen.

SPEAKER_00

Or not Seth Rogen. Uh yeah, Seth Rogan.

SPEAKER_01

Is it? Who's the The Bully.

SPEAKER_00

The bully. Okay. That's I was like, uh because I saw it on on something that that was his first movie he had done.

SPEAKER_01

And I thought for like a young, like for Jake Gyllenhaal, whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, that was really great acting for a young actor.

SPEAKER_00

As like the movie progresses, like you see his like uh like his emotional distance.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, like his face.

SPEAKER_00

Where like he's like slowly like not caring about like anything.

SPEAKER_01

And when he actually does, you know, listen to Frank and like is like, yeah, we're gonna do this, like his whole face like just changes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Like the acting was great in it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh even the the goddamn dumb teacher, the gym teacher, where she's like, Hey told me to forcibly insert my curricular or whatever into my anus.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like that was funny.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, there were some pretty funny parts. Yeah, but anyways, it was worth a a watch. And if you haven't watched it in a while, yeah, give it a give it another world.

SPEAKER_00

Give it a spin on the old record player.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Uh but like always.

SPEAKER_01

And this was a request.

SPEAKER_00

Was it?

SPEAKER_01

It was for us to watch Donnie Darko.

SPEAKER_00

So all right. I think we solved it.

SPEAKER_01

We did.

SPEAKER_00

Um be sure to uh like, subscribe, uh all the all the jargony stuff or whatever. I don't know. I don't even know anymore.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

We're we're just doing it for funsies.

SPEAKER_01

We are, but we'll send you something.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we'll send you a sticker if you really want it.

SPEAKER_01

The picture of Russ's ass.

SPEAKER_00

Hold gross.

unknown

All right.

SPEAKER_00

We love ya. Please pretend to be kind to each other.

SPEAKER_02

Love ya. Bye.

unknown

Okay.
