This week, we're travelling to our quiet countryside of Cornwall, where a series of bizarre sightings would spark fear, fascination, and decades of speculation.
As reports of a large black cat stalking the moors began to spread, livestock were found mysteriously killed, witnesses came forward with chilling encounters, and rumours of a creature lurking in the shadows captured the nation's imagination. Was there really a deadly predator roaming Bodmin Moor, or was something else driving the legend?
In this episode, we'll explore the origins of the Beast of Bodmin, the eyewitness accounts, the investigations, and the theories behind one of Britain's most enduring mysteries.
So grab a drink, settle in... because sometimes the most terrifying stories are the ones no one can ever truly explain.
Okay. Ready? Yeah, baby. Welcome to Kill the Mood Podcast. We're here to talk to you about everything. Spooky dookie. We are not professionals and we mean no offence in anything we say. This is just us trying to make sense of the senseless. Without further ado, this week's case is the beast of Bob Minmoor. I just have to say something and I've already forgotten. Oh wait, no. I actually wanted to show I am the beast. I am the beast of Bob Min Moore. No, I wanted to show you this.
SPEAKER_02My princess!
SPEAKER_00Why is she looking like that? She looks like the meme of she looks like a Muppet, doesn't she? She does look like a Muppet. Yeah, she does. And then look at her. She was fast asleep. Oh sorry, that was a test I was doing. Oh I love, I love. She was just having the best time. Did she love Tom last time? Yeah. Not too much, I hope. No. She didn't do any humping.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. We looked after Wheelow yesterday, and she was just being a little cute. And she was just like driving about and then she was having a little nap, and then she was eating some sausage.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01She does love a sausage. And then she was just having a good time.
SPEAKER_00But the last time she saw Tom, she oh my god. She gripped onto him. Literally.
SPEAKER_01She went hard on the She like f lulled us into a false sense of security because she like slowly grazed over his leg.
SPEAKER_00She put her legs like either side of his fight, and then she just fucking gripped Don and she started going breath. And he was screaming and we were all screaming with laughter and she just looked like. It was so funny. It was so funny. And he was just like not impressed. And after that, we had to separate the two of them because Willow.
SPEAKER_01He's like can fucking troll herself around Thomas.
SPEAKER_00I know, and then now that she has been spayed, I'm hoping. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But everything we'll see.
SPEAKER_00Hoping is too much for her right now. But we'll see what happens when she bounces back.
SPEAKER_01But when she's all healed up, I feel she might give it a go.
SPEAKER_00I feel like this, I hope that it just chills her out with other dogs and with like obviously all of that, but like I hope she's just a little bit less protective of me and her. I think she's just very Get away from us strangers. Or she's hello, you in between at all.
SPEAKER_01It's so funny how protective she is though, but the fact that this week she's literally been to everyone's house and just been with loads of different people and she's other dogs.
SPEAKER_00She's not too with other dogs, she protects herself. Yeah. And with people, she protects me. Okay. But if I'm not not even really people, I think I don't know, just like sometimes if like I saw my dad and I was like, oh my god, hey, and then went to give him a hug, she'd be like, What are you doing? And then I'd be like, it's just a hug, and she'd be like, okay, don't we? No, I think she's but yesterday she just fucking ran out of the car straight into my house. She was like, okay, uh We'd parked far as well, not like far, but like Yeah, she f she found her way to me. Yeah, we'd pulled up both doors wide open. We were like, We're running late. She just flew out of the car and I was like, bye. She just like the house to the house. Hey girl.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and like my house is like my house is like actually walled off, like the garden's walled off, but she came straight through the thing and straight through the back, like French doors. Yeah, she just knew.
SPEAKER_00She knew straight onto the show. Curled up and she was like, I'm done now. I'll be here for the day. Yeah. Welcome back. Yes. This is a little bit of a different one because it's more folklore, urban legendy. Yes. It's not a murder. It's not a murder, it's just murder of life.
SPEAKER_01And that is murder.
SPEAKER_00So true. Murder. Thank you. That's what I've been trying to say.
SPEAKER_01I can say that now because I just ate one vegetarian meal.
SPEAKER_00So funny. I literally ate a fish early this year. Like, I'm not. I thought you were like early today. I was like, when? I've been with you all day. She caught a fish for lunch. She ate it.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_00Yes, this is a local Cornish one. I wanted to do it just because I like a little mythical little. I need to do one of these. I haven't done one in a while. I think the last one that we did was probably the Montauk project, like for an urban legend.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, yeah. And the Mfield Hawkin. Have I even done one?
unknownI don't know.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I did the Diatlov project. Oh, yes. And that's spooky. How spooky. Yeah, that is a lot of things. That's a mystery. That's a spooky mystery.
SPEAKER_00Whereas like an urban legend. This is probably the f Mothman. Do you know what Mothman is? Yeah. Who was talking to me about this the other day? Were you talking to me about it the other day? I don't think so. Do Mothman. Yeah, I will. I'll do Mothman. I fucking love Mothman. And I just got a Moth on my leg. Mothman just tried to eat you at the end.
SPEAKER_01And a Moth did try to eat me.
SPEAKER_00It's a sign. Do Mothman. Okay. That would be quite a funny. I'm gonna do Mothman next. No.
SPEAKER_01If we don't do my story today, maybe I will do Mothman and I'll save the other one.
SPEAKER_00It's not like this is just such a tame one, but I just thought it was fun because it's like close. And I have spent quite a lot of my time out on Bodman Moor. Have you? Foraging. Oh yeah. Yeah, you have. Foraging is for it. And I just every time I'm out there, I'm just thinking like, where is that? Where's he at? Yeah. Do you know what I mean? Why hasn't he got me at? Yeah, exactly. And then I just think, imagine if one day I just saw him, or like he got me. Yeah. Wild time. Have fun. Yeah. I would love it. You've always wanted to be a kid. This is just my skull.
SPEAKER_01Like this. I'll take a photo of Calvin. Yeah. And I'll be like, oh my god, beast of Bob Min Moore finally got her.
SPEAKER_00Just what she wanted. Just what she wanted. I was trying to explain this to someone the other day. Do you remember the Garfield? So there was like this it was like Garfield's Nine Lives or something. And it was this really freaky, like old school. It was like a video. So I had it on videotape. I think it was my auntie's or something. Okay. And it was Garfield, like as the cartoon, but it was his like nine lives, and he kept dying, and some of them he was in like the Egyptian times. Yeah. It was terrifying. Okay. One of them was like, he was in the Egyptian times at like the pyramids and stuff.
SPEAKER_01Can I just say Can I just say that on Netflix now is Scooby-Doo Incorporated? Have you seen it? No, I haven't yet. You need to watch it. It is so good. I'm so good. I mean, I love everything Scooby-Doo. I literally live for the films and for the live-action films and for the old casting. Greatest thing ever. Literally obsessed with Scooby-Doo and will be for the rest of my life. But Scooby-Doo Incorporated, it's so fucking the mysteries and it's it's interconnected. Oh it's fucking, it's so good.
SPEAKER_00I saw it the other day and I was like, sorry. Fuck with it. I'm like annoyingly watching loads of different things at once, which I just don't know why I've done that. But I think it's because one of them is the handmaid's tale. Oh intense. Yeah. And it is really intense. Like it's so well made, but I feel like I watched three episodes and I'm like, gosh, this is dark, so I need to break it up a little bit. And then I saw that and I was like, That's what you should break.
SPEAKER_01I've watched it so many times. I watched it back in the day, like when it first came out, because I'd love to say it was because I've got a little brother. I was about to say that actually, but it's a lie. I saw it and I was like, yeah, I'd like to watch that. Started watching it and like it was so good, and I don't think I ever actually finished it. So now that it's on Netflix, I will be restarting it.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. Oh my god, how exciting. I can't eat. I'll be doing that when I get home. Right, this is the cover. It was terrifying. I'll put it on the Instagram. Okay. But oh, maybe this was it. I don't remember that. What the fuck is that? That's horrible. It was like this, so this is obviously him being a caveman. Oh my god, I do remember. This is unlocked. This is him as a little fat baby, and he like eat I can't remember what happens in that one, but he eats loads of stuff. Then there's this I don't even know what that is. Shmeliken. Then there's a then there's this cartoon one and he gets hit on the head or something. That's some weird like magician show. There's a space one. But this one was terrifying.
SPEAKER_01That's like Fox and the Hound animation as well. And Bold Dogs Go to Heaven. I'd just like to know why whoever made films for kids when we were younger, why you do any of that. Why you did any of that.
SPEAKER_00And it is good, but and also I don't mind Disney slash Pixar stuff anyway, so like I'm not being like too sad. No.
SPEAKER_01Um Shiny. That's my favourite one.
SPEAKER_00Shiny. I don't know anything to do with it. I don't even know what happens with it.
SPEAKER_01Just like a big crab and he sings that song.
SPEAKER_00They were explaining it to me, and they were like, yeah, so like obviously the same as like with most kids' films, like the protagonist dies or something. And I was like, what? And then someone dies. Yeah. And I was like, okay, does that always happen in kids' films? And then I was like literally thinking about how many times they just like unnecessarily No, every time.
SPEAKER_01Just they just love to kill like All Dogs Go to Heaven is so do you know? Do you know the little girl who voiced that was murdered? All dogs go to heaven by her dad. I'm pretty sure it's her dad. And in the final scene where the dog is talking to her and he's going to heaven. Yeah. Sorry, spoilers. Um the guy that voiced it forgot forgotten his name. She'd already been killed and he was saying goodbye to her, and him crying is him actually crying, say goodbye saying goodbye to her.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, that was absolutely horrifying. And if that's not true, sorry. I have made that up. I s I saw it on social media, so uh Judith Yeah Barcy. Judith what's her name? Judith Barcy. B-A-R-S-I. Yes. Oh my gosh! Yeah. Both released Oh my god, that's so scary. Yeah, and she did The Land Before Time. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Also, devastating film. Devastating!
SPEAKER_00Ugh. Oh, someone just said it's a little matchstick match girl level of sadness. Okay, that's also a very fucking sad story as well. So just make something happy. Also, I remember Watership Down as well. Yeah, 12 minutes in and we've not once talked about the baseball no more. Other than him murdering the game. And I barely will be in. Yeah. Yeah, we probably Anyway, that if anyone's watched that Garfield, oh it's so scary, is the one where he like is in like a pound and then they inject him with something and then his eyes go red and then he turns into this scary thing and then runs through the forest, and then either he gets shot by hunters or he tries to kill someone or something. And it was fricking terrifying. And when I saw Oh, it's so scary, and it has like old cartoony vibes to it, which scare kind of scare me anyway, like quite easily. So it's just it's really scary, but we should it's really scary. But this when I was researching it, I was like, it's the thing from Garfield. Yeah. Yeah, I kind of thought this was gonna be dumb, but it's like there's some stuff in there that I'm like, yeah, okay, fair. Okay. But if you just pretend that the little beast looks like little Willow, okay. Okay, so basically this is about so-called sightings of a beast roaming about the moors of Bodmin, killing livestock, wild animals causing havoc. People say that they've seen it in their garden and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_01That's kind of crazy because I do actually on the way to Bodmin, I think from my house, is it Bodmin or is it on the I don't know. No, there's this cow, and we call it hench cow because it's fucking huge. Like it's built like a brick shit how and you we see it and we go hench cow! Anyway, and then I would say the beast of Bodmin more was real, he would have eaten hench cow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, this is the thing, he like kills some livestock and then doesn't kill that is so weird. Okay. I saw a horse kick a foot. Do you know what that's like when you said to me my first words were you are the weakest link goodbye? My first words as a child ever in my whole life. Apparently I didn't say anything for ages, and then one day I was at dinner and I just took a huge breath in. I went, one of you must leave nothing. You are the weakest link goodbye.
unknownWhat the fuck?
SPEAKER_00And then I just went back to just not speaking again. Apparently, my mum was like, save absolutely unhinge. But I was cycling this one time. Like, I'm not lying, but no one's ever believed me on this. I was cycling, I was coming out of the caravan site. I have no idea whether this has anything to do with the beast before before. Because beasts can be real, because I saw she saw a horse getting he had like this red deflated football in the field, and I was cycling past, and I was actually just staring into the field instead of looking at the road. And because obviously their feet go backwards, he just booted it really far, and I literally stopped the bike and went back and watched him for ten more minutes and he did nothing else. But I was like, Wow, I've just literally witnessed horse football. That's the good stuff. You can tell me which the real folklore is. So Bob Mimore is a granite. Bob Mimore is a granite moorland in Cornwall and it's known for its landscapes, ancient histories, and fun hikes, apparently. Oh, wouldn't that I have been there so many times. And this is about a sighting of a beast that roams around. So the it's apparently it's also got the two highest peaks in Cornwall, which is Brownwilly, Brownwilly, and Rough Tor, which I didn't know about.
SPEAKER_01Rough Tour I've heard of. I tried to climb Brown Willie and me and Tom did. And um we basically you have to go up a hill to go down to go back up Brownwilly, and we went up the first hill, and we were like, fuck this. Why would we do that? So then we fucked up.
SPEAKER_00That is so far away. So far away. Maybe it's from the river down the road. Yeah, so there's a little suspicion. My god. There's a little fucking hell, we got BTK over here.
SPEAKER_01I'm so judgy of something I literally haven't said. Sorry, if you can't speak or spell, you shouldn't be a serial killer.
SPEAKER_00To be fair, at least I'm not going to be a serial killer. Yeah, there's a little superstition or urban legend about a wild beast that roams here, and this is basically just a little bit about the history. So in England, 1976, the Dangerous Wild Animals Act came into law, and this law limited individuals from keeping exotic animals without a valid license. That's too late. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That is too So are you telling me before 1976 I could have had a tiger? Yeah. So if I could get one here, I was allowed it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00People would just like smuggle these things about and then just keep them on their land and then and then like loads of cross species.
SPEAKER_01They're like a rumour that there's like a panther somewhere in the UK.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, this is what they think this is. Yeah. It's like really weird because there is like sightings of it in Plymouth. Oh fuck off. He wouldn't bother.
SPEAKER_01He wouldn't bother.
SPEAKER_00He wouldn't have bothered bro. Yeah, so but and then I was looking into it and I was like, but I guess people could have just kept them as pets or smuggled them as and then they were just like, yeah, in 1976 it came into a law and it basically. So you're telling me my mother could have just kept it. Could have had a tiger at six years old. Yeah. Mad. Fucking mad. Yeah, mad. And I think like it also didn't just end there. Like people were just like being more sneaky about. Yeah, of course. People aren't just wake up, they don't wake up one morning and go, do you know what? I'll surrender my tiger. Yeah, exactly. And there was loads and loads of different animals everywhere, and I think the reason this is me trying to explain away the folklore is that even if there are animals like that out there, it might be because in 1976 a lot of people thought, I can't be fucked to get insurance for all of these animals. So release them. That's fucked. Yeah, and also it's like a mad thing that you're taking like exotic animals from like random climates and bringing them here and then being like they probably are struggling to adapt. Oh, but now I don't want to get them insured, so I'll just release them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And some of them are mad danger. But like wither and die. But yeah, they will have to make some quite like some adjustments to the temp.
SPEAKER_00I know, but then also like I've been around like I haven't been everywhere, but like you'd think that you'd see a tiger.
SPEAKER_01If there was a panther living in Cornwall, I'm sure we would know about it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, this is why I'm just like, what?
SPEAKER_01Unless it's really good at hunting. So like anyone that has seen it hasn't survived. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh, yeah. But then you'd find books. No more foraging on the moor, Amy. I know. What if I'm the sighting? It's just you every time you're out. Me with my head down and my coat on, and they're like, this wild cat, this feline that's been skulking about in the moors. Since the 70s. Yeah.
unknownI can't remember.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so basically, this was to monitor what animals were being held in England due to various issues with animals such as squirrels being brought overseas to England and then spreading diseases and then killing off other endangered species like the red squirrel or whatever. Do you know, like that whole saga? No.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Sorry, yeah. That's like kind of.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I do know that saga.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so it's basically being like these like things that were potentially gonna go extinct, and then something that like 'cause squirrels carry a disease that will kill other squirrels but won't kill us, I think. Yeah. So like now that's why there's just grey squirrels everywhere, and just like no one ever sees any red squirrels. Yeah, because I think in like the lake district and stuff, there are still some, so everyone's don't fuck with them if you see them. Like, this is a mad rarity. Yeah. So I think it was just to monitor all of that kind of stuff a little bit. Things are fucking long around. Absolutely crazy. And smuggling and stuff was still a thing, so I was obviously wasn't foolproof. Anyway, so towards the end of the 1970s, local reports started coming in of an animal that resembled a very large cat. Bro is over it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I told you I'm tired, I'm losing it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's fair. Yeah, so towards the end of the 1970s, local reports started coming in of an animal that resembled a large cat. These were all faint sightings and there was no evidence or proof, so people were a bit like, what do you mean a large cat? Was it just like a fat cat? Or was it tricky? Is it just a big cat? Were you tripping? Is it managed to someone just scuttling along? What if the beast of Bobman Moore is a furry? That would be the best outcome. Yeah, literally. From the 70s. Yeah, so now maybe it's a family tradition. Yeah. That would be the goddess. There's just nine people that just take it in terms of the stuff. Just go out there to be a beast. Just trying to promote this life. Yeah, so people said that the cat was too big to be a domestic cat, but not looking like any recorded English wildlife, hence the suspicion. The sightings multiplied massively in the next few decades, especially in the 80s and 90s, but there was still sightings into the late 2010s and super recent stuff as well, so that's what's like adding to the folklore.
SPEAKER_01Also, 80s and 90s, everyone was fucked up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01All the time. So let's not trust them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But now. Yeah. And like now there's like videos and stuff. And like paw prints and things like that, which we'll come to talk about. So like it does seem like there is something on the mall. Yeah. And bro is like not that much of a threat, so like. You do you, but.
SPEAKER_01What is a bear? No, that would be a threat. Panther would also be a threat. Unless it's learned to live off the land. Yeah. He's a vegan. He's a vegan. Yeah. That'd be fucking sick. Yeah. If I met a panther that was a vegan.
SPEAKER_00And it could just be your mate and it would be a big thing. Oh my gosh. I know. This is why I was like interested in doing it, because it is like a bit like nothing really happens. But it is just like that could just be chilling out there, and he could just be really good at hearing if people are around. And then just like But why be lonely? Now I'm sad. No, I there is suspicion that there's quite a lot of them. Oh, okay, great. But let's see. Okay, sorry, continue. No, it's fine. I have done a whole two parts since here, so I'm relearning this with you. But I do remember some bits. Yeah, so this is what's been keeping people on their toes and what's built to the like nostalgia or like the folklore of it is the fact that it's been like it was back in like the 70s that it was, but there's still like sightings, and there's so many like ghost stories, and some people are like, it was literally in my garden, and then other people are like bullshit. And everyone's just got some other little funky theory, which I thought was quite fun. So the cat was described as large and black, sometimes spotted. So from the late 70s, local farmers began discovering issues with their livestock that wouldn't be explained any other way, but like from other livestock or human traumas. Their livestock had been killed during the night, but then when the farmers found them in the morning, they'd have huge gashes across their stomach and throats, and the scene was like apparently something they'd never seen before. It was unexplained and unbelieved until later in the 1980s, when some new evidence from a man called Eric Lay in 1883 came in. He lived in Moulton in Devon, and he lived at Drew Stone Farm as a farmer, which is about 50 miles from Bob Minmoor. So most of the time now it's just been like they've come down in the morning, all their sheep are fucked. Like, I think it's like they're saying the gashes and stuff, like no human would just come in and just massacre a load of sheep like that in the night. So he lived around 50 miles from Bob Minmoor. There have been several sightings around this time of an unknown beast roaming about the moors and other large landscapes. One day he went to see his flock in the morning, and overnight he'd lost a significant amount of them, and in the space of three months he lost over a hundred of his sheep, all due to this like mysterious circumstance. Can you imagine coming down every single day and being like, oh, it's another five sheep gone? So, through inspection, it was confirmed that the deep cuts to the throat and stomach were the work of a larger predator, significantly larger than any other recorded local wildlife in the area. I see what it's saying, the work of a larger. Predator that's larger than the other local wildlife that have like claws. Do you know what I mean? This isn't like a cat. Yeah, so it's being like for something to be able to do that damage, it needs to be considerably bigger than a sheep, and there's nothing recorded here that can do it. Just got like a knife on the side of his mouth. He's just like He's got that fucking knife in between his hooves now. He just takes off his little like horseshoes and he's just like You don't know what it's like in these streets. Do that Bojack Horse. But there's a new It's called Pretty Lethal.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, okay. And it's a it's like a ballerina film. Yeah. And it's got fucking the girl from All the Boys I Loved before. Anyway, they're in it, and they're Maddy. Yeah. And they're all ballerinas. And they like get stuck in this place and they have to fight their way out to the death, and it's fucking hilarious. That's a good one.
SPEAKER_00But they put blades in their ballet shoes and just fucking No, that is so smart. Because it is like a Peaky Blinders thing, isn't it? Like looking dapper or looking to fit your like uniform and then just being like, Murder! Yeah. Surprise murder. Little horse saddle. Flip that off and it just Yeah, so basically they were being like, Don't know what the fuck this is. Yeah, that's fair. Neither do we. We have no idea what's going on. Um yeah, so due to this excessive amount of death, the locals um rallied up hunters, marines, police, and more, even pitchforks. But no one ever found anything. But sightings continue. It would usually be if people were walking alone with their dogs in the evening or just hiking by themselves. Obviously, because if you're running out with rallies. You do talk to your dog, but some people maybe don't. And then like on your own you're not really making as much noise. Exactly. And like I feel like if Willow's running along, she's probably just the same as like a rabbit. Yeah. It's a patter. Yeah. Whereas, like, you know, if you're going out, they're like, oh, let's go out with loads of hunters. And it's like, actually, this thing. Did they try going out one at a time? I guess as well, they're being like, what if this thing is fucking huge? Or did they try going out silently? Yeah, maybe not. I think it's men. I don't think.
SPEAKER_01Shut the fuck up. Stop having a natter while you work.
SPEAKER_00Us. Too funny. No, I just to be fair, that is like what we have to do because the amount of times I'm talking so loudly, and someone will come out and be like, Can you shut the fuck up? Or like, oh yes. When we were doing that wedding the other day and we were like fucking laughing, and like Jara was just like, Shh, I was just doing a speech, and you were we were like, you were like, That's an old woman, that's what it was a child. And then we were like, it's going on a bit long, isn't it? And he was like, Can you just you could just shut the fuck up? They can literally hear you, it's a tent. That was so funny. Yeah. Whoopsies. Yeah, we wouldn't be any good at it, but here we are, judging the hunters from shit. Yeah, so it would just be they were much quieter than a whole army and group of hunters, but obviously, if you're out on an evening walk, you weren't slaying a beast. No. And no one's gonna believe you. No. Like, I saw this tiger the other night. Hear me out. Yeah, so even though it's recorded that wild panthers or other large cats' territorial range is between 50 to 150 square miles, people had theories that it also could have been multiple beasts due to the slightly different descriptions. Okay. So it actually could have covered the whole base to like Devon and then like back down to like I guess St. Austral way, you know? Yeah. Like maybe even Truro, I don't know. But like they It's not called the Beast of Truro. He likes to travel, okay. He's not allowed off the mall. Yeah, he's just I don't know, I don't know where this guy is, but I kind of love him for it. He's just strolling, just staying out of everyone's way.
SPEAKER_01He's not killing anyone.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. How would we know? Just sheep. We wouldn't know though, would we? Because I bet they found a fair few bodies on Bobman Moor.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00And they Google it. Yeah. And if he likes to talk to people alone. We're asking for trouble by the way. How many bodies have been found?
SPEAKER_01It's like it's my burial site, and I'm just checking.
SPEAKER_00I know. The next time I forage there, I'm gonna boot myself right. Oh yeah, sorry.
SPEAKER_01There is no single official count of all the bodies discovered. The remote and rugged nature of the moor means it has been the site of accidental deaths and tragedies. Notable historic cases.
SPEAKER_001844 murder of 18-year-old Charlotte Diamond. Oh my god, we should do Charlotte Diamond. Do you remember that? No. That was horrible. But we should do it. It was 1844. You sure you don't remember that? And also there's loads of historic bones on there, apparently. Just saw there. It's my favourite phone, I don't know why, it just really makes me happy. Okay, so I think basically the fact that it was cited in quite a lot of different places, the fact that the descriptions were all a bit different, the fact that lots of people from all different like walks of life had said that they'd seen it was just adding to all of the suspicion, basically. Everyone had a theory and no one had an answer, so platforms obviously could just go as wild as they wanted. In 1995, the Agricultural Development Advisory Service completed an intensive investigation to determine the truth. This was a government-funded inquiry due to the loss of livestock and issues with the farmers making a living. Oh, that seems fair. I was about to say, what the fuck are you doing with taxpaying money? But that actually does seem fast. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And in like 95 as well. Don't know what I was gonna say. Yeah, what were you gonna say? They were getting ready for us. Yeah. They were preparing. They needed Cornwall to be in working order, so we could not be born there. Two more years and one of them shall arrive. Well actually technically not, yeah, not for 20 more years, but whoopsies. Yeah, so this was 26 days long. Twenty-six. And the findings were inconclusive. Right. Massive waste of money. But the adas, I didn't want to say it all again, did say that it could be a possibility. And if they were roaming free, they shouldn't be a threat to livestock. What? I don't think you can say that, can you? But the whole point of doing it.
SPEAKER_01What are they eating?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I just don't know. And also that was to see what was happening to the livestock, and then they're like, it's not conclusive, but if there is a beast, it shouldn't be eating the livestock. And they're like, but it is eating the livestock. But then what's eating the livestock? What's happening? I don't understand. Has anybody had a word with the aliens? Literally. So yeah, they said they found no evidence, but during the 26 days, there was actually other sightings and more deaths to livestock. So I don't know what they were doing for a whole month. Probably the same as this geezer. That just reminds me of you know the music that's the production. And they're running across the moor, and then it's like running after them, and then it's like picking off livestock as it goes. And it's just like and they're looking over this way and he's attacking livestock on that side. It's just the two guys from Detectorists just walking around in a field like opposite Dipney from Top Gat. Yeah, opposite. That's so funny. Yes, I don't know what the fuck the point in that was, sorry. So just after this, still in 1995, a young boy found a skull, the one I've showed you 500 times already. No. Can I see it again? He found this skull along the river Foy in Cornwall. This turned out to be a large feline skull suggesting a leopard. However, the National History Museum actually debunked this and said it could have been imported to the UK for different reasons, like a fur rug or something. So they're saying like it doesn't necessarily mean that there's animals that are living and dying. Can I just do some sort of like mineral test on it? Yeah. Like they do in bones and check its bones and just be like, but they're saying it's been drinking from this water its whole life. Do you know? Yeah, that's quite true. I don't know if that's real, but could you not do that? Yeah. Do it now. Like where's the skull? Where's the skull? Could you- If bones can do it, you can do it. Yeah, exactly. They're being like, it could have been from a rug, and they're like, okay, but how do it end up here? They're like, I don't know, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's like everything is just inconclusive. Yeah, tell me how it died. Yeah, exactly. Tell me something. So most people that were deep into the folklore now, that was they were just like, fuck the National District Museum. What do you know about fucking history and nature? Literally, they're like, we found a skull, this is a big deal. There were speculations in 2010 that there was a freak storm and it was really cold. I didn't write down what storm it was, but some storm that was like really cold and it killed loads of wildlife, so it's like everyone was like, Oh, when will the Moors recover? And actually that could have wiped out a lot of the beasts? Yeah, the beasts. Surely we'd find bones. But that's come from a rug. There's lots of there's also lots of animals around, and how often do you find bones? Yeah, so there was a big lol again after 2010, and they think it's because of Storm Burr. So then it all kicked back up again, and they think maybe that could have been like through them reproducing. Do you know what I mean? So it might have just been it's not like it's one beast that's been knocking about since the 70s. Because also cats they only like big even big cats, they only live till 15 or 15. How could we exist with big cats on the moor? Ha ha literally, mate. I just don't know. And like you're so rich.
SPEAKER_01And I wanna believe it. No, I don't actually. I'm so scared of big cats, it's unreal. The idea of being potentially eaten alive is not good, like even slightly. It's such I have such a visceral fear of it that every time I go to a different country, I Google how likely it is I'm gonna see a big cat in the wild. I get so scared.
SPEAKER_00More than how racist is this country. We're just saying. I'm more than likely to be attacked that way. Literally. But the innate innate fear is that I'm gonna be eaten by a big cat. Yeah. That is mad, isn't it? I have that with if I'm swimming in the sea and I think about it for too long. I think, what if something comes up underneath me and just chumps me? And then I start and I love the sea, but if I start thinking about that while I'm in the sea, I'll just have a panic attack in the sea, and I'll literally be like, oh my god, get it.
SPEAKER_01No, I feel I the moment my feet aren't touching the floor in the sea, I like there's something underneath.
SPEAKER_00I'm certain of it. Oh so scary. I remember on holiday and I was trying to swim out to a big like blow-up park that was like quite far out, and that was the first time it ever happened to me that I started getting scared like that. And I literally grew up on a beach, so I was like, I'm not scared of anything. Like, I've been diving and stuff, like it's fine. Literally out of nowhere. What if a whale just came up and ate me?
SPEAKER_01There's a film coming out about a man that gets eaten by a whale. No! And it's him surviving in the whale's stomach and trying to get out.
SPEAKER_00What's his name? Jiminy Cricket. Jiminy Cricket! That little lad, Jeremiah! Gibbetio! Gibbetto! Gibbetto! Jibeto! Doesn't he get eaten by a whale? Oh no, is it Pinocchio? Isn't it Pinocchio? No. Is it? I don't know, I feel like there's a whale in there. I can't remember now. Now I'm always thinking about him being turned into a donkey. Damn, does he? Get turned into a donkey. He's not elegant. He's also not a real boy. No, yeah. No. Or any of them. No. Yeah. Fucking. No, don't be chasing me. No. Don't be eating me in one ball. Don't be eating me. Don't be sick. And if you are, I suggest you take my head clean off. Otherwise, I am going to be a problem. Don't be doing in the hunger games where you take me off and then kill me. Take your time and take Do you know what I mean? Yeah. No. Don't be taking me into a little lair. Oh. Don't be picking at me. Yeah. I'm not Piggy Bits.
SPEAKER_01I'm not Piggy Bits. I want to be gone. I want to be gone. Yeah, just I'd like to make that very clear.
SPEAKER_00No. I need it to be fast. Yeah, but even if it was like a whale fast, it would still be.
SPEAKER_01No, no, that's not fast! You'll survive in its belly. And then probably be consumed by its stomach acids.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no.
SPEAKER_01Don't swallow me whole. I don't want that.
SPEAKER_00No. I was watching some YouTube video of a big whale, and then someone was like on a surfboard with it underneath them, and I was like, I can never surf ever again. I was like, because I just couldn't.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I would literally pass away. Yeah. I would pass away. Just on the surfboard. Yeah. You'd see cartoon style, my soul leave my body like above, watching and being like, oh I forgot I can paint through it so well.
SPEAKER_00You just yeah, no thanks. But even I'm like what we're talking about. This is just not a case, and I love it. So in 2013, Sid Yates was chilling in his home in Four Lanes in Red Ruth. This is also around 50 miles from Bobman Moors, but the other way than Bloomer. When he claims he saw a large black cat-like creature about 50 yards from his front door. He claims the size was big, was like a big dog, like a big labrador, but the features that were showing was feline looking. So it was like a big ass dog, but looked like a cat. So you know when it has rounded paws and like a rounded nose.
SPEAKER_01You mean like a panther?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I mean a panther. I'd shit myself.
SPEAKER_01Literally shit myself if I saw what I thought was a panther.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. What would you even like he's inside his house? I'd still be like, Roman's coming. Pass away.
unknownPass away.
SPEAKER_00Oh pass away. Take me away. Yeah, I'd be like, that is immediate heart start. Yeah. Territory. So this is where the idea of haunting comes into play. Okay. So people start speaking about the possibility that this is just something that some people see, whether it's in a protective manner or whether it's in a fishcraft manner. Yeah, there's like loads of different theories about it. But apparently Yates said that he'd actually seen a cat a few years prior in a different area, but he didn't want to come forward because he wasn't certain. But then he saw this one again, he said it was the same one. Now this just could have been a guy that just like sometimes gets confused.
SPEAKER_01So aren't they? Look quite similar. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'll be certain it's but he's like saying like so because some people are like, oh, it's like spotty, like a leopard. Oh, and then some people are saying it's like a black cat, but some of them are saying it's like spots, and some of them are saying it's like pumas, some of them are saying it's like panthers, some of them are saying it's like leopardy, and he was like, nah, it's the same one. Which is quite hard to believe.
SPEAKER_01Do you think he's ever considered mental illness?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because I feel like to say, oh, and I was I actually just to solidify my story, I did potentially see this two years ago as well. Yeah, I don't like that. You should have brought that up earlier. Yeah, and it's not like it wasn't a like the beast of Bob and Moore was the thing this whole time. It's not like someone he's not like the first person to have seen it twice, you know? But everyone started like being like, what if this is like something that's going along with certain people some people can see That's not fairly share around? Yeah, I wanna see. And he doesn't seem to be like that sketched out about it, he's just like, Wow, a feline.
SPEAKER_01I've obviously got a death wish because I literally was like, I'd see it and I'd pass away. I wanna see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you're like, don't leave me out. I wanna see it. Yeah, so due to this being for such a long period of time for the beast to have been roaming for, people started to spread that this cat was haunting people in the local areas and was a spirit in the form of a wild panther or other large feline. Then in 2015, a lady called Carol DeForges also claimed to have seen this creature. She was living in Plymouth at the time, and her description matches like this guy's description. Yeah. Which is not hard either, do you know what I mean? That's three there's two years in between this. Yeah, like the internet's a thing. Yeah, you could just have been like, yeah, I could just. And we'd love to go past her at that point. Yeah, exactly. And like they're being like, explain it. She's like, Well, it's just a big cat that's black in the case. Black cat's the same! Like, it's not like it's got like a scar across its eye, do you know what I mean? Fuck's sake, just like saying that. In 2016, a man named John Parkinson was out hiking and he found a set of paw prints in the ground near a clay pit in St. Austel. This photo was inspected and confirmed to be known of no wildlife that is that was insured. Hello, what are you doing? In the surrounding areas and look to be more panther-like. Here is a picture. Wow. I don't know why. Seven toes. It's huge. It does have seven toes. Or is it like a double no?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, is it like it stood over itself?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like a polite panther. Slit across his legs. Yeah, literally. Yeah, that's just a picture. They just said that it's too big to have been like with cat paws. That can't be a cat. You think? Yep. Yeah. Apparently, in this local area where this photo was taken, there's also a man named Henry Welch, and he said he was driving at night near this time before the prints had been found. And a wild animal jumped out in front of his car. He said after that he after he'd calmed down, he reported it because it didn't seem like any other animal that he'd ever seen before. Such as deers, foxes, or badgers or anything else that's usually in the road.
SPEAKER_01I do actually, when I'm driving at night, sometimes just stare at the bushes like as I'm driving and think, don't you dare. Yeah. Like I'm talking to like deer and stuff. Like, don't ever.
SPEAKER_00But also Don't you fucking dare anything that's out there if you can hear me, don't you dare. What would you do if like a person came out? Because I would leave them. Yeah. No. Alone at night. No. I'm sorry. I am so sorry. I know I really want to be a better person. I can't. But I can't. No, I can't. I literally can't. I couldn't. I you're a trap. It's a trap. Yeah. It is a trap. Or you're a ghost. Call me cynical. Yeah. I'm sorry. I value my own existence too much, which is laughable considering the way I talk about myself. But I can't. I know. I can't, and I won't. And I will call the police. I'm just not stopping. No. I'm just not stopping. I could not. I could not. But yeah, this guy. Imagine also it just being a fucking panther. If me and you were in the car, I'd feel brave. If we're doing it together, I would feel brave.
SPEAKER_01I'd be wearing your knives. Yeah. If I was alone, I've got a fucking tire iron in the back of my car, like I'd be getting it out, but no fucking way am I doing it by myself.
SPEAKER_00No way. There's just no way. No. So he'd basically almost hit something that looked like a panther and he's absolutely blown away. So he'd been like, I might have just almost killed an animal, but the reason why I'm calling it in is because I think it might have been a panther. And everyone's what? In 2016, a man named Benjamin Me, who when I was reading the article about this as well, it kept saying me, like instead of Benjamin. So it would be like B rote. And I'd be like, who wrote it at school? This calls his name. Benjamin.
SPEAKER_02Me!
SPEAKER_00Be Me. Mr. Beame. Yeah, so he used to run Plymouth Zoo. He admitted that he'd actually ended up having some evidence found that in the 1980s the lady used to own the zoo called Mary Chipperfield was forced to close the zoo for some reason. Because there was no like obvious signs of transport, in theory, she must have released the animals into the wild. Yeah. And pumas were the main, like a main thing that they just couldn't find like any record of any of these animals going back. Yeah, so that's also confirmation. And maybe there was like some things where they were like, send the elephants back or something. Not the elephants. I don't know. Send the elephants back. But not these fucking pumas. The elephants have taken up all the send them out in the wild. You've overshadowed. They have weight luggage. So the pumas have to go. Yeah, so that's like kind of the theory. Also, there's a lot of mythos of a beast out of Dartmoor, which is around 40 miles from Bob Minmoor, that has had the same sort of allegations as well. So it's like she could have just been like off you go, little pumies, and then they've all just like ran off in different directions and just like respawned and respawned. Reproduced.
SPEAKER_01I just I like I hope it's true, but I also really don't.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's weird, isn't it? Because it's like I love the idea of them just like for all this time just being some creepy little bit. And they're just actually just chilling. But like What if they're the reason we have missing people in the UK? Yeah. And they are just taking them off somewhere. Like a dingo. Oh my god. I don't want to think about week. Another huge deal that sort of swayed this story for some people was a lady called Gemma Smith in 2024. After Storm Noah, a creature appeared in the open like a little bit more, and she got a video that ended up on Cornwall Live. I've seen this. And do you know the amount that I had to watch without clicking on YouTube because I got scared that it was gonna do like that jump scare scary face pops up? Country right now. So it was like, look at this puma spotted in Cornwall. You know what? It does look like a puma. But that could also be a cap. But like quite big, don't you think? I can't tell. Yeah, why didn't you zoom in? Also, what is this like? This is the Puma Finder track. We've been saving this for when someone spotted the beast of ball.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it like satisfied the way it's tail flipping though. It looks like a cat. And like maybe just like a pump. Like, I don't know, that could be not that big. But I was like it could be quite big for a cat, but not like a normal that's not the one I was thinking of, so that's.
SPEAKER_00That was not why I'd thought that actually could be a cat. I watched it on a I watched it on a laptop and I was like, damn, that's that big boy on my phone. I'm like, oh.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then I saw its tail flick up and I was like, it might not actually be that big.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Also, like cats can be fat. Yeah. So this video evidence meant that people started deep diving into what the species could be. Some people think that it would be a Jaguarundi wild cat, which people think were held in captivity in some places in Cornwall, and they are significantly smaller than like and this escape wouldn't have been known to the public if they were doing this illegally and then just released them because they didn't want to have to get them deported.
SPEAKER_01Reformer trying to get rid of it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, literally. Oh yeah. Today's the day we have Keystama's cactus pants. Yeah. He's gone. How many is that now in ten years? Seven. Seven. Absolutely crazy. We googled it today and we haven't had someone go formal terms since David Cameron's first one. That was mad, bro. That's like when I first started even like paying attention to politics. I was just like a little bad. It's actually a joke at this point. It's like do you remember Rishi Sunag? Like, what today? We were trying to name all of them, and I was like fucking Liz Truss. Yeah, what the heck?
SPEAKER_01What the heck? Like, I'm not a massive fan of Keir Starmer, to be honest, unsurprisingly. Vote green. But I do think that there should be stability in the country. And we can't have stability when like we our leaders are resigning every five minutes. Me and Jack were having this conversation because we were saying, like, I think Labour has been quite spineless and gone back on so many things that they were saying in support of people's rights, actually trans rights.
SPEAKER_00It made me so annoyed because I watched it live when he resigned this morning and he was saying, I have changed lives. We've done so much. And I was like, I'm not saying that you haven't done stuff, but like sort of.
SPEAKER_01I do agree that there needs to be some stability. We won't see any like positive change until there is stability, and for a while, and like it is really frustrating because couldn't you just get to a general why would he expect anyone to have any faith in the political government, no matter who's running it?
SPEAKER_00It's just a joke now. Like we are a joke, we're a joke to ourselves, but also other countries think we're a joke, like we have nothing left. And even in his speech, he was like, instead of saying we've worked together to do this, he said at one point, and I did that. And I thought, oh, get a grid. You're resigning, giving up. Like you're not to tell us what you haven't done. To be honest, one of the worst jobs ever. Everything that's gone on in the last five-ten years, but like we have seen a crazy amount of stuff as a country and as a world, but don't try and get in there and then be like, oh hatchy, it's a bit much. Anyway, so we're sick of them.
SPEAKER_01Sick of them fucking waltzing on in and then resigning when the going gets tough. Even though you knew it was gonna be tough. It's a fucking mess. It's all a mess.
SPEAKER_00Some little theories that people have like it's just basically everywhere you look, there's like little tales and little stories, little books on it, like loads of people have like different theories and stuff, and I just think that's why I wanted to do it. So the first one is obviously escape to zoo enclosured animals from the 70s. However, there would obviously have to be more than one because cats and pumas and panthers, etc., only really low up to 16. But if they are discreet as fuck, then there could be loads and they could have been reproducing and just laying low this whole time. Because there are quite a lot of sightings, but no one's ever seen like a family or a baby or anything like that.
SPEAKER_01No one's like on I survived because they got attacked by a panther on Bob No Moore.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly. I feel like there would just be a bit more unless they have. I don't see anything in the wild wildlife documentaries.
SPEAKER_01They're not successful 100% of the time.
SPEAKER_00So But also maybe they're just like living they've just been living off the fat of the land and then they ate livestock for a bit and they were like, actually, there's too many people around people. Why don't we just eat plants? I don't know. Yes, this is a likely theory after Dangerous Wild Animals act, they could have all just been released. Some people say it's a remnant from prehistoric times, and it's just hanging around with people haunting, stalking, some sort of like prehistoric like thing that couldn't leave. It's time, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01No, but I do know what they're like they'd like accidentally bring dinosaurs back. Yeah, something like that.
SPEAKER_00Or like something like worst CGR you've ever seen, but loved it. I think I have seen a little bit of it. Some people say it's a sabre-toothed cat. That is prehistoric, isn't it? That's exactly people will just be like, that's exactly what's going on. I think we'd know if it was a sabre-tooth. Surely. It's that fucking thing off Garfield. A ghostly entity haunting the moors. I like that. I feel like also it doesn't have to be haunting. Like it could be like. What does she say in her box? The grip!
SPEAKER_02The grip!
SPEAKER_00I love her. Yeah, like I feel like it doesn't necessarily have to be haunting, like it could just be like it's protecting, or it could just be that it's just floating about. Yeah, he just like sometimes appears if you're feeling spiritual AF.
SPEAKER_01It's maybe it's Mother Nature, herself.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. Exactly. Maybe she just sometimes likes to roam about as a little cat. Like this little diva, just getting in people's faces. Like she's all up in my bum. She's too cute. Yes, Cornwall's history of witchcraft and folklore is also quite a big one that aids in some people believing this creature is a shape-shifting witch. Yeah. That I'm sold. Yeah. That's what I want it to be. It's Amy. It's me, bitch. That's why I did this. It's you.
SPEAKER_01It's me. It's me. That's why she's saying, I'm always foraging on Bob Min Moore. I'm there every day. I just shapeshift and just collect all my. I was there in 1877.
SPEAKER_00What would you do if I was? I was there in 2014. That'd be sick. Why haven't you revealed it already? You come to my house and I've got all my graduation pins like in Twilight. You've just got 600. You're just like Are they graduation pills? I was trying to sing the song by the muse. Yeah, so whether this animal is protecting the area or spreading bad spirit, that's also massively up for debate. Some people are like, No, and other people are like, why people no die? Yeah, no one's getting hurt. Yeah. And I don't know, I've never seen it. I've been there a few times. But it doesn't sound like you have to be in Bobmins or see it because it was in Red Roof in Plymouth. So do you don't go there either? Yeah. Don't go there either. I've been to Red Roof once or twice. Yeah, I have been there a few times to be fair, and I haven't seen it yet. But I've never seen it. Yeah, not the usual here, not that crazy, but also local and mystery and kind of fun and fascinating. Loved it. Yeah. It is big silly fun. Yep. That's us done, lads. Thank you so much for listening. Yeah, as you can hear, we're both fucking cream crackers. I know. We have got a few more, but another day. Yeah, it's fine. The real day. Bye, follow us on Instagram. Yeah, and all that good stuff. YouTube and email us and by
