Max, Pete and Ash are back again and this time it's all Irish breweries and a blind test to see if everyone's favourite Irish Stout is actually everyone's favourite Irish Stout.
Hello, welcome to Summerton. Welcome to the Etsom Arms and welcome to the Etsom Cast St Patrick's Day related special.
SPEAKER_05I can't believe we're doing a St. Patrick's Day special.
SPEAKER_04We're only nine days late. Yeah, but there's gonna be another on the agenda.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, here we are. Welcome.
SPEAKER_04So, um yes, St Patrick's Day was nine days ago.
SPEAKER_05I've had it.
SPEAKER_04Um so today we are tasting all beers from Ireland. Sharon, where where are we getting the beers from?
SPEAKER_06Uh three different brewers in Ireland. We've got Third Farrell Brewing in Dublin. Uh we've got Kinnegar Brewing from Tonnegal. I don't know what I'm pronouncing that right, and Luft Gill Brewery, which is a family-owned brewery in is it Sligo? Sligo? I don't know. Sligo. Sligo.
SPEAKER_04Sligo. Yeah, I think we should apologise in advance to the nation of Ireland in case we offend anyone during this podcast. I don't know who will.
SPEAKER_02It's alright, I'm 25% Irish, so it's fine. Very good.
SPEAKER_06The reason the reason why um we're doing a related centre capture part of the reason is because Pete wants to do a special segment involving some certain stamp that comes from Ireland.
SPEAKER_04So yeah, you've um I'm you're constantly mocking me a bit mentioned about Guinness. Yeah. So we've got is it three beers?
SPEAKER_06We've got a Guinness, and then you've got a London nitro uh water and a Bristol nitro stout to taste. And I wanna know which is which.
SPEAKER_04And we're gonna have a bit of a blind tasting. How exciting! Blind tasting. Blind tasting. Blinding the blind.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Max, I don't think I can hear myself very well. I can hear you perfectly fine. You're I can hear you. Okay, we'll leave it.
unknownWe were really lucky we were.
SPEAKER_04So we're um we we've we've obviously lost Sharon now, but I'm gonna introduce our co-hosts here, Ash and Max. Good evening. Hello, good evening. Um so before we start on the Irish festivities, yeah. What are we drinking?
SPEAKER_05Ash. Well, I'm done, you know, tradition is I've just gone for the uh the house the house lager. The house lager.
SPEAKER_04So to be changing, I've been told earlier.
SPEAKER_05Well, yeah, there's talk, isn't it?
SPEAKER_04I heard some of the there is no talk, by the way.
SPEAKER_03No talk what's the thing.
SPEAKER_05All I said was there's there's potential for other keg keg beers to feature. But I agree it's nice to have a a house lager, isn't it?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. And that's Gravity from Bristol Beer Factory. And I think we've had it at the start of every single episode. Yeah, you early early duels, you were going off piste and having 15 pints of arbor or something.
SPEAKER_05I reckon, yeah, because the first time we did ciders, we uh we were drinking beer before. Yeah. That's why that one's never been released.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I have this before every show now, it's good. It's nice, yeah. It's become a bit part of your rider, isn't it? Along with But it's refreshing, like two little bulls.
SPEAKER_05Just got uh just got in from work, it's just a nice refreshing pint to just kick just ease me into the uh the evening of casting. The cast cast.
SPEAKER_02And I do a um an unboxing of my uh pork pies. So this account is an email.
SPEAKER_05I've just been given uh it's a little letter. Oh is it what is it? News. Is it private and confidential? Yeah, private and confidential. The pizza's been handed an and Oh, you've dropped a bit. I've dropped a page. I'm surprised it's not in a brown envelope. What is it? Are you allowed to say?
SPEAKER_04It's um it's uh it's it's it's a voucher.
SPEAKER_05A voucher? For Cobbs for Cobbs whole shout out Cobbs Whole Food.
unknownNot Cobbs at all.
SPEAKER_05What are you eating now, Max? Pork pie?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, sorry, I just eat my pork pie. So you did crack it open. 47p. Oh, I thought it was tasted weird but because it's cheese and onion flavour. Is it still got pork in it?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Is it a vegetarian pork pie?
SPEAKER_02No, no, no, it's still got pork in it but it's got cheese and onion. I was like, why does it taste so funky? Because it's reduced as well. Maybe it's just funky anyway. No, it's because it's cheese and onion.
SPEAKER_04It's also an orange label rather than yellow. Yellow's traditionally the uh clearance. People who don't have jobs by.
SPEAKER_02Co-op is orange. Listen, this is a good way to save the environment and to get bargains.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. No, I I commend it. How well you you're saying zero landfill because you eat all the out-of-date stuff. Exactly.
SPEAKER_02Well, someone's got to eat it. Yeah, exactly. I actually prevent the home. Did you go there on the way here?
SPEAKER_05Was that like this evening? Just before, yeah, nice.
SPEAKER_04So, anyway, back to St. Patrick. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Who's it?
SPEAKER_04You got a lot to get through tonight. Well, you see, you might need this for your citizenship test. Yeah, I know. I shouldn't say too much.
SPEAKER_05Is there a citizenship test? For Ireland? You can't just nod, it's a podcast.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_05Takes bite of pork pie. Takes bite of pork pie. Yeah, that that will get you split. That was really good. That would get you said. Maybe you could get it. I tried one off air a minute ago and I won't be doing it again.
SPEAKER_02Well, I sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. I don't know which well like I can do an Irish accent, but I could I don't know what's going on.
SPEAKER_04Well you see, you've told us in the past what your relationship is to Ireland. Your grandmother?
SPEAKER_02My grandmother, my dad's side is Irish. Nice.
SPEAKER_05You're do you live in Ireland now?
SPEAKER_02No. I live in Somerset.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02Where's that? Well, it's where the Etsom Arms is.
SPEAKER_04Summerton's Premier Micropub.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Premier?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. That's what I'm going for now. It's a tagline. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05But I say you've gotten pretty premier over the years. Yeah. I saw those pictures of it when it first opened the other night. Yeah. You've come a long way.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we've had the seventh birthday. Didn't we do the seventh birthday in episode A?
SPEAKER_05I thought it was 10th birthday, wasn't it? Seventh. Wait, no, we didn't do the seventh birthday because we missed last week. That was last week, wasn't it? Or the week before? Week before, yeah.
SPEAKER_02We haven't done one for weeks. Three weeks.
SPEAKER_04Three weeks. Four weeks, I think. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Bloody hell. So it's good to be back.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, very good to be back.
SPEAKER_05I think I say that every time as well, but you know. I'm looking forward to this evening. I think it's going to be a good one. So what have we got on the agenda? So we've got the Irish beers, but how many have we got?
SPEAKER_04We've got um six beers, I think. So we've got we've got to keep moving, ranging from four percent to seven point five per cent. Big including two strouts. So we've got two what, sorry? Two stouts. So we've got four pails. Two stouts. Four pails, which we're gonna do blind tasting.
SPEAKER_05Irish pails. They're all pretty pale over there, aren't they? So we need to uh Irish pails. Irish pails in your area.
SPEAKER_04So we've done the extra. Yeah. We just need to we've got too many customers, we can't get a little bit more. It's good, it's busy.
SPEAKER_05That's right, we can fit it, fill a little bit. I'm really enjoying this lager. As always.
SPEAKER_04So so have you ever been to Ireland?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And where where have you been? Where are you native of? Um Dublin. Okay. I've been to Dublin. I don't know if I mentioned that.
SPEAKER_05Uh uh, you have mentioned it.
SPEAKER_02There's another there's another place, but I can never remember what it's called. That's where my grandma lived. I can't remember what it's called. Norval Island. It wasn't like no, no, Ireland Island. What's the capital of Norvell Island? Belfast. Belfast. That's the one, yeah.
unknown1600.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I knew you were. But my little guy lived in like a town. I can't remember what it's called.
SPEAKER_04Can't be more specific than that.
SPEAKER_02No, no, I know there's a castle there, so um Dublin Castle. No, it's not Dublin. It's another town.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, God rest her soul. Wait, is she dead?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Oh, you said you told me she lived in Somerset. What are you on about? I thought you said uh do where do you live? I know where you live.
SPEAKER_04She used to live in Sheffield, didn't she? Uh only for a short time.
SPEAKER_05Oh well, yeah, rest in peace. Sorry for your lot.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, she was wild. In what way? The Irish way. I don't know if I can disclose that on a people went out to the camp. I don't like the pork pie with cheese and onion in it. I'd rather it was just pork pie.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, well that neither does anyone else. That's why. No one else likes it either, that's why it's in the reduced section. That's why it always gets to the cell pack down.
SPEAKER_02And they have orange labels. I don't know why they mess with them. Just have a regular pork pie.
SPEAKER_05Well, you gotta you gotta change it up. But also, if you if you didn't add that, you wouldn't remember how good. Now you're gonna go back and buy normal pork pies so you can refresh your palate.
SPEAKER_02That might be next week. If it's reduced. Well, there you go. Beggars can be choosers. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Well, you wouldn't buy yourself a little couple of pork pies to treat yourself on the on the on a Thursday.
SPEAKER_02That's not bad. 70 P each. If I had bought that at full price, I'd have been like I don't even know if I want it now. It's 40.
SPEAKER_05They got jelly tool around them, they got jelly wrapped around them. Not really, they don't have jelly. You like the jelly. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I made a weird pay homemade pork pie once.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I like watching them being made where they fill them with the jelly, it's kind of satisfying.
SPEAKER_02That's not very vegan of you.
SPEAKER_05Why don't you eat them?
SPEAKER_02Easy pay or vegan. What do you say? What did you have last weekend now?
SPEAKER_05Don't worry about it.
SPEAKER_06Right, are you ready for your own?
SPEAKER_05We're ready for our ready. Oh, yeah. Um does Irish have their own language? Is that super question? Gaelic. You just gaelic. Yeah. Well you sorry, you can't. Is that is that a language? Yeah. Yeah. Do you know any? Again, apologies to the people of the island of Ireland. No, that's not an offensive thing to say, is it? Well, it's fairly ignorant now, isn't it? Yeah, I think that's my that's my that's my thing. Slante.
SPEAKER_02Ignorance is bliss.
SPEAKER_04Sla slange, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02Slant.
SPEAKER_05Slange.
SPEAKER_02Cheers.
SPEAKER_05Oh nice.
SPEAKER_06Slange. Right, do you want to know what the first beer is?
SPEAKER_05Yes, please, Sharon. Oh, sorry, I'm sorry. You can't.
SPEAKER_06Um this is from Third Barrel Brewing in Oblin. It was originally formed as a collab collaboration between two cuckoo bat um two cuckoo brewers called Stone Barrel and Third Circle in 2016. So your first one is called Daydrinking. It's a 4% IPA, and it's got an untapped score of 3.67.
SPEAKER_04Oh what's the ABV? Sorry, Sharon?
SPEAKER_064%.
SPEAKER_044%. Thank you, Sharon. And it's called day drinking. Yeah! You know what? That's one of my favourite, favourite things. Is it day drinking? Do you like day drinking? Oh love it. Oh yeah. I'd prefer to go out and get leathered at lunchtime. Leathered at lunch. Leathered at lunch than to have an evening session.
SPEAKER_05I know it's not really the daytime, but that's what I kind of like about the Etsom arms, is I can get pretty smashed and be home by ten. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well we're sharp, aren't we?
SPEAKER_05Well exactly, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Right, the um the blurb on this can is a bit small for me.
SPEAKER_05I'll do I can I can take the honours.
SPEAKER_04But shall we have a little sniff?
SPEAKER_05Do you want me to do want me to give um give you what was that word?
SPEAKER_02Smells like a hazy f fruity pear.
SPEAKER_05Bro, this is at my boulevard, I think. Barrel, day drinking, session IPA. Born and brewed in Dublin, Max, your ends. Are we are we gonna drink first or something?
SPEAKER_04And then I'll talk about the cuckoo brewery. Yeah, I'm intrigued. Get your cuckoo.
SPEAKER_05Get your cuckoo out. That's clean. It smells like IPA. Clinker drink.
SPEAKER_02It's a nice loud one, because it's not been picking up so well.
SPEAKER_04All that I like.
SPEAKER_02That's good. That's fruit skin. It's lively.
SPEAKER_05That is nice. That's smooth. Is that a bit too sweet? No, no. It's sweet, but it's not too sweet.
SPEAKER_02It's not a big thing. But again, I think I've desensitized that.
SPEAKER_05That's solid, that is.
SPEAKER_02That's really nice. That's a good idea.
SPEAKER_04Can we have some more blurb then? Yeah, of course you can. Well well, actually sort of pre-reading the blurb. Cuckoo breweries. So those would be brewers who go and sit in an existing brewery. And so don't have their own Like Glaston Rales. Well, but yeah, they would contract brew, but cuckoo brewers, the actual brewer goes in.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. So it's like say I was like a DJ on a on a DJ set in a club. Yes. Very much so. So then they get the deck on the mash.
SPEAKER_04Imagine his box of vinyl, if that is a thing nowadays. Yeah, is his box of hops. A box of hops and a box of mass.
SPEAKER_05What? Hops and mash. Yeah. Hops and mash. They've just got all these jars and tinct tinctures. Tinctures. An insatiable burst.
SPEAKER_06Let me know when you're ready for your next one.
SPEAKER_05Right, so. Born and brewed in Dublin, Ireland. Big on flavour. Lower on ABV. Oh, what's the ABV on this one? Four percent. This session beer is hopped. Sorry. Hopped a blend of American hops.
SPEAKER_04Do you think that's a typo?
SPEAKER_05What does that mean? Unless I'm just reading it wrong. This session beer is hopped. A blend of American hops. Maybe it says with it should be with. Blend of American hops for a proper hit of tropical and citrus fruits. Definitely getting tropical. Definitely getting citrus, definitely getting fruits.
SPEAKER_04I mean, this is of our style, isn't it? This isn't very good.
SPEAKER_05And also, just a little one. The carbon produced in the making of this beer has been offset by planting native Irish trees. Nice. What's a native Irish tree? The Irish pine?
SPEAKER_04The lonesome pine. Irish trees. What's a lonesome pine?
SPEAKER_02There's a um I went um Pen Ped Oh god.
SPEAKER_04Laurel and Hardy songs.
SPEAKER_02Cecil and Ped Ped Pedulate. Sorry about that. Ash, hazel, silver, and downy birch. Scots pine, willow, alder. Scots pine.
SPEAKER_04Wouldn't it be the Irish pine? Are you ready for your next one?
SPEAKER_02We're ready for our next one. There's a tree called Ash though. Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_06Right, this one is called Shut Up Juice.
SPEAKER_02Who?
SPEAKER_06Shut Up Juice. And it's a 5%. And it's again, it's from third barrel.
SPEAKER_05Shut up juice. And again, it's very What do you think it means?
SPEAKER_04It makes you shut up.
SPEAKER_05It makes you shut up. Why would you want to shut up? So we drink drink some quickly. But this is my job to not shut up these days. Okay, so this is called shut up juice. Right. Should we um Yeah we should. Drink and drink.
SPEAKER_04Drink and drink. I just read it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, sorry, we yeah, we've got to be Oh my god, that's so different.
SPEAKER_04That's dense.
SPEAKER_05I wasn't expecting that at all.
SPEAKER_04There's no citrus in there at all, really, is there? That's really nice though.
SPEAKER_05I've never tasted a beer like that.
SPEAKER_04It's not I don't it doesn't feel that juicy to me.
SPEAKER_02Nah, that's juicy.
SPEAKER_05You wouldn't say that's juicy. That tastes like I read what juices are in it. Not in it. Mandarin juice. It's got Vic Secret in it. Mand juice.
SPEAKER_04Do you remember the Vic Secret?
SPEAKER_05Uh Vic Secret? Fuck me, we spent far too long on the Vic Secret hop.
SPEAKER_04It's Australia.
SPEAKER_05The lingerie hop. Oh yeah. It's like a 10-minute segment. Yeah. But I think it was even longer than that when we've actually recorded it. We were obsessed. I still am. That's alright though. No, probably the opposite.
SPEAKER_02It's got some awards on there. Look, we haven't even mentioned that. Oh wow. World juice awards. No!
SPEAKER_05No, yeah, no. The World Beer Awards Island Gold. World Beer Awards Island winner. That's what they said. Wow. So you can get gold without being a winner. Well, I don't know. It says gold and winner. They've got two badges.
SPEAKER_04The winner.
SPEAKER_05The winner. That one got it? They got nothing for this. So the 24 World Beer Awards. Are you looking at that, Matt? Seriously juicy. Seriously fruity. Seriously crushable, hopped with Vic Secret and Citra. You can expect big aromas of pineapple and peach. Are you getting pineapple? I'm not getting pineapple. But I'm getting generic juice. Right.
SPEAKER_02The winners, they've got loads of categories though. This is what I mean. There's no definitive answer. And I suppose it wouldn't be fair to have one. There's world's best dark beers, flavoured beer, IPA, lager, no or low alcohol beer, pale beer, sour and wild beer, specialty beer, stout and porter, and wheat beer. Okay. There's a competition for for all of them. So I guess it's just whichever one you enter.
SPEAKER_05Whoever bothers to enter.
SPEAKER_02So I guess if we went into the world's best IPA.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But fair, it's award winning. Wow. This is interesting actually. But dead air at the moment. There's um the best in the world, according to the World Beer Awards, is one called uh Zomvol Brauard. German. Wolfgang. Oh, that's the name of the beer. That's the the brewery Zumvol Brauard. That's German. Welcome to um Yes and Carlskars. Ireland special. The second best is from Japan.
SPEAKER_04The third best is from you're writing another episode now. Can we get back to Ireland and the beers?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so all we need to know is this one is award-winning. England. Do you think it tastes award-winning?
SPEAKER_04China.
SPEAKER_05Get back to the beer.
SPEAKER_04Well, I think this is a whole podcast in itself, to be honest. Yeah, but that'd cost a fortune. We won't be able to import all that shit.
SPEAKER_05That is a nice it's a nice beer.
SPEAKER_04I like it. I like it. I don't it's not a citrus.
SPEAKER_05I very much like it. Pineapple and peach, you get pineapple and peach? Yeah. You are? Yeah. Okay, there you go.
SPEAKER_02I'm getting a big juicy peach in my mouth.
SPEAKER_05Are we stacking these and ranking them?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think so.
SPEAKER_05So I think it's fairly obvious though, isn't it? I think so, yeah. So we've got the day drinking session IPA on the bottom. Yeah. And the shut up juice, the juicy pale ale. So are we going to a brewery?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, we've got a different brewer this time.
SPEAKER_03This is Kinnaker Brewery.
SPEAKER_05So were these just the only two we got from this brewer? Yeah. Yes. Okay, nice.
SPEAKER_06And this and uh from a place called Letterkenny, which I think is a great name. Wait, I've heard of that.
SPEAKER_02Letterkenny.
SPEAKER_06Letterkenny. Um and the first one you're gonna have is called Scraggy Bay. It's a 5.3% IPA. And I'm obsessed with a can. The can, there's a running theme. You've got three from Kinnegar Brewing.
SPEAKER_05On the look of the Kinnegan, those last two, I wouldn't say they were terribly interesting. No, but I like them. The logo, I really like the logo, the third barrel logo is sick.
SPEAKER_02Perhaps understated. With that hot, but I like the minimum styling. Yeah, thoroughly impressed by the beer though. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I don't know if it's a shame though, because it would you pick that up if it was in the shop. I don't know. Which, you know, you shouldn't drink with your eyes.
SPEAKER_02No. But that was actually really good. We've definitely had nicer cans of worse beer in.
SPEAKER_05Can't you get you can get drunk through your eye, can't you?
unknownIt's not a big thing.
SPEAKER_05There's an eye eyeball pull in the Kevin and Perigo large where he pulls vodka in his eye. That's the fuck me.
SPEAKER_02I wouldn't want to, but this looks uh very nice and clear.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's clearer. Well the the other two were c were they weren't cloudy there.
SPEAKER_04Did you just take a sip of that? No, I had a sniff. Uh it smells weird. It does smell. A bit home brewery, don't you? I don't like the smell of that. It puts it. Uh it might have the old lady. I think this is gonna be I smell a bit home brewery, yeah. I think it would be described as hop forward. I think you're gonna get a lot of hop in this.
SPEAKER_05It smells like raw wet hops. Yeah, what is that that weird moist smell that you like some beers have?
SPEAKER_04Probably dry hop. I I I'd I'd venture that this might be dry hoped.
SPEAKER_05Because they always end up tasting alright, and I'll I'll probably be proved that point will be proven when I take a sip in a second. But uh there's something about the smell of some beer.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it smells like sort of like fusty nuts.
SPEAKER_05Fusty nuts, yeah, for sure. Betty swallows. It's um I would say this is. I just sipped it.
SPEAKER_04This is a practice. This is um quite an old style. Let's get to it, because there's a lot to talk about.
SPEAKER_05Clink and drink. Clink and drink.
SPEAKER_02Donegal.
SPEAKER_05Oh sorry. Donegal. Donegalway girl.
SPEAKER_02That is Yummy. It doesn't taste homebrewy. Strong. It tastes strong. I like it.
SPEAKER_05They're all really nice and fresh tasting. So far. Yeah, they are. So where do we go? What are you already thinking of thinking of where it goes on the pecking order? I like that.
SPEAKER_02Has no one else got anything to say about that?
SPEAKER_05Well, I mean, I didn't I said it tasted fresh, I said it's I said.
SPEAKER_02It tastes a bit musty. Yeah. Like it tastes a bit like if you get some dust in your beer. Dust? Does that often happen? What do you mean?
SPEAKER_05What does dust taste like? Depends where the dust comes from.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Space dust? Yeah. It's good. I like that a lot. I drink that happily, and it's a very nice colour. Again, there's another award on here. European beer star. Beer star? Yeah. The beer tasting gold.
SPEAKER_04Do you think we're not allowed to enter these European competitions? Probably not. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02We fucked that one for ourselves, didn't we? I don't understand why they need so many though. It just sort of defeats the whole point.
SPEAKER_05It's an odd one, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02Like there's like the only award it needs is the cast cost approval. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well maybe we we should start at the end of the year. We should collate our favourite beers. Independently brewed in Donegal. But we could I feel like we could go like the.
SPEAKER_04There goes back's passport.
SPEAKER_05Say it again.
SPEAKER_04Independently brewed in Donegal, I think he was saying at home lists. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02At Kinniger. We pair brewing tradition with a contemporary sense of adventure to produce clean, crisp, full flavoured beers. The river is named after the beach beside its birthplace.
SPEAKER_05That's brilliant.
SPEAKER_02Is it good? Is it alright?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, keep going.
SPEAKER_02Just north of Rathmullen in Co Donegal. On Ireland's wild.
SPEAKER_05Who does he sound like?
SPEAKER_02In Ireland's wild Atlantic way. Locks Willie's natural and cultural histories. Sorry, I'm so immature. Is captured by captured beautifully in Irish and English place names. They'd make its coastal features beneath the knocking at Nokala Hills by Strakey Bay. Giving us a local maritime name. Genuinely. It's got no speech. We won't be able to go back to Dublin next February. For a style of beer with great maritime past. Follow the hops. Yeah. So would you say I think that was quite good.
SPEAKER_05It was really good. I could listen to an audiobook of that. Yeah, see.
SPEAKER_02Irish 25% Irish.
SPEAKER_05Where do you learn your Irish accent from?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I don't this is why I think family guy is controversial.
SPEAKER_05Who's Irish in Family Guy?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Do you how many do you have an Irish mate? Because obviously it's very contentious sometimes. And I don't know whether that's like a northern accent or a southern accent or a what regional kind of regional.
SPEAKER_04If you're Irish and listening, please do email.
SPEAKER_05I'm sure you're sure you'll. I've got an Irish mate called Irish Harry. I haven't seen him in a while though. Remember Irish Harry?
SPEAKER_04Irish Harry.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he's yeah. Was he Irish? I think he's from Northern Ireland, though.
SPEAKER_04I lived and worked in Ireland during the Troubles. What year was that? Well uh recently. Is it still going, isn't it? No. Not really. Not really. Um it was in 1990.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_02But the trouble was like 40 years. Yeah. What were they about? Good Friday agreement. Every time we bring up a major conflict, and then I just has no idea what happened. Well, I don't. Anyway, we're here for the beer. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Oh. I like this. I don't think I do. You don't like it. I don't feel like we haven't really commented much on the flavour. I don't feel like you've been able to comment much on it. I wouldn't it's it's Is this what that's what you would describe as hop forward? Yeah. Yeah, it's not too citrusy. Can I say this far into the the the the cask cast that I don't really know I don't know if I know what a hop um tastes like. Or like what's hoppy and what's not.
SPEAKER_02I mean I probably do, but to be able to say oh the flavour is coming from the punchy citrusy flavour.
SPEAKER_04Well so I think this will be part of a voyage of discovery together with the listeners. Yeah. Because in three or four weeks' time there will be hot plants planted just no more than ten feet away from you.
SPEAKER_05Well, can you eat them raw?
SPEAKER_04Well we could do that, right? We could do that live on a probably they're part they're cannabids.
SPEAKER_05Well there you go.
SPEAKER_02You they won't make you high though. Well, I don't know, probably smoke anything if you ground it into a fine powder and um when they're when they're actually when they're ready to pick, you if you squeeze them, you get a hop oil out of them.
SPEAKER_04Uh okay. And uh the chinookhocks that we grow out there get really citrusy.
SPEAKER_05Is that named after the helicopter?
SPEAKER_04No, I think I think it's named after the tribe. Tribe or wind. The weakness of wind as well.
SPEAKER_05Wait, so is that why the uh helicopter's named as Chinook? Yes.
SPEAKER_04Well this is interesting. Aviation. Welcome to Aviation Today podcast. Yeah. Boeing helicopters, a lot of them are named after uh North Native American tribes.
SPEAKER_05Oh.
SPEAKER_04Okay. So you've got the Sioux, the uh Apache, the Chinook.
SPEAKER_05Apache, isn't that that song?
SPEAKER_02I've never put that two together on that. I know I feel really stupid. Yeah, Boeing helicopters.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, they were all named after No, this is what this top podcast does. It teaches teaches. Teaches and informed today. What else do you think? Listeners, my mind. Also, where are we putting that one then? I I'm I don't know if that's as good as the shut up juice. I like the can though. I'd be more likely to pick that up and try that than the other two. The can't old school. Oh, that's got a fanical.
SPEAKER_04I think definitely shut up juice.
SPEAKER_05Up the top?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I like that. I don't know whether it's just because I haven't been drinking much craft beer lately for like the last month.
SPEAKER_05Cra what have you been drinking?
SPEAKER_02Fucking Bud Light.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you yeah, fair.
SPEAKER_06Right, you ready for your next one?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I haven't been drinking any beer.
SPEAKER_06Six percent.
SPEAKER_05Oh, we're up there now.
SPEAKER_06East Coast style IPA.
SPEAKER_01Nice.
SPEAKER_06Uh called Big Bunny.
SPEAKER_01Big Bunny. And I like the biggest one.
SPEAKER_06Didn't he just do the Super Bowl?
SPEAKER_05Is that a Bad Bunny song? Isn't he like the most dreamed artist in the world right now? Yeah. Is it Bad Bunny? Is that just B A D Bunny?
SPEAKER_04Is he um he's Mexican, is he Mexican or South American? Spanish.
SPEAKER_02No, he's Puerto Rican.
SPEAKER_05There you go. He's they speak Spanish, though.
SPEAKER_02He's not Mexican, he's um Puerto Rican, I think.
SPEAKER_05Ego good, sir. This one looks nice. It's a license yellow. They're all um it's interesting here. They're all um pretorico. It's got a chocolate bunny on it. It's almost Easter. Yeah. Yeah, happy Easter. What? What did you give up?
SPEAKER_04Now we're um we are focusing on St.
SPEAKER_05Patrick's Day, remember we're Oh yeah, sorry, Irish special.
SPEAKER_02They like Easter. Do they some of them? What does that mean? Actually, they all like Easter, I think.
SPEAKER_04Everyone likes Easter, don't they? I thought everyone agrees on Easter.
SPEAKER_05Um, well no. Well who Christians do. Yeah, but don't Catholics do Easter Easter? That's still Christians. Yeah, yeah. That's what I mean. That's the only two in Ireland, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02Catholics and Protestants.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's still they're both still. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02We won't get into that. They all believe that Jesus came back on Easter Sunday.
SPEAKER_05There you go.
SPEAKER_02Or went away.
SPEAKER_05This one's for Jesus.
SPEAKER_02I can't remember how it goes now. Yeah, and then I think um he died, he died. We're better on helicopters than we are on. Religions, aren't we?
SPEAKER_05Isn't it? That's why it's called Good Friday. I don't I don't know why you're looking at me like I know.
SPEAKER_04No, yeah, Maund Day, Thursday, Good Friday. On the third day he rose. There you go. Big bunny East Coast style.
SPEAKER_05It says style, I don't like that term.
SPEAKER_02What's the description of the actual beer? East Coast style.
SPEAKER_05We'll drink it first and then I'll tell you.
SPEAKER_02I don't know what I mean.
SPEAKER_05Clink, clink, clink, clink. No one does, but it's provocative. Clink and drink. Oh, that's good. That's better.
SPEAKER_02That's lovely.
SPEAKER_05But then again, it's that it's that it's that fourth beer.
unknownSix percent.
SPEAKER_04I'm I'm slightly nervous and I'm calming myself. You're nervous. Well, because the big test is coming up.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh. This is why we're like we're sourcing you up. So to just wait, how many beers have we got more of before the biggest? How many beers more?
SPEAKER_04The big test is.
SPEAKER_06We've got a little segment of three, and then you've got two more after that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Okay, okay. So we got a little little it's like a guinea sandwich.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god.
SPEAKER_05I'm excited.
SPEAKER_02I'm excited.
SPEAKER_05But it's not to take away from these four lovely beers we've just tried for here.
SPEAKER_02I'm excited because the artwork on this is great. Big bunny.
SPEAKER_04So we nice and sort of like dun dun dun dun. As I said, might have mentioned Sharon and I were in Dublin at the beginning of January end of January. And we found a craft beer bar. I can't remember the name of it, can you, Sharon? Would you have described it as Premier or No, not as Premier as here. It was fancy though. Did they have dimmable lights? Uh no, and I couldn't see them being controlled by Alexa either. Isn't she good? When did we ever use that? He did it the other day. I did it the other day.
SPEAKER_02Where's the Alexa?
SPEAKER_04Hang on, have you got the controller, Sharon? He does it through his D TV remote.
SPEAKER_02I shouldn't say that. The totally legit USB stick that just so happens to be in the back of the TV.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Alexa. Anyway, this is a pointless segment. Turn down the light.
SPEAKER_02No, it's good though. I like this. It's like handing Kim Dong and the nuclear button.
SPEAKER_03Alexa bar lights off.
SPEAKER_04Most places you have a choice of when it's not.
SPEAKER_03No, it didn't work. Alexa bar lights off.
SPEAKER_06Try the um artwork lights off.
SPEAKER_03Try to please Alexa artwork lights off.
SPEAKER_05Has it been telling by that unanimous colour sounds darken here? Alexa artwork on. So why didn't it work with the bar ones then? I don't know, it's probably just Oh hang on, what was that? There's a dinger, boy.
SPEAKER_06Did you press the right button, Peter?
SPEAKER_05Right, do you want a blurb on this beer before we get too carried away? Big bunny is big and juicy. Big bunny spending a punchy hot wallop ding with a creamy wheat mouth feel. You get that queamy wheat mouthfeel? Queamy wheat mouth. Yeah, I've heard of queamy wheat mouth. We didn't we didn't say that the the logo for this um brewery is a bunny. That's why it says follow the hops. That's the pum there.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I see but the thing just seen on the crest. So it's all gonna all the magic is gonna happen behind the screen. Oh Sharon has erected a screen on the bar so that we don't see There's been an erection.
SPEAKER_05But if you're one of the campers, it's pretty big. Um my god. It looks like she's like perform preparing a D D campaign. We haven't we haven't ranked put this one on the ranking. Well I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Um I think it's at the top. Is it six percent?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it feels like it.
SPEAKER_04I think actually you probably go six up the top.
SPEAKER_05I just think that I think we're about to go. No, go at the top. Max? You agree?
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, they're probably I can't remember, honestly. I just think you just drank it.
SPEAKER_05I can't no, I can't remember what everyone's got. I just think it's it's quite a lot more interesting.
SPEAKER_02I know that I feel I felt like tonight a lot of it. But there's no substitute for ABV. No, I felt like all of them were pretty good tonight though.
SPEAKER_05They're all they've all been very similar to the thing. I think they're very good.
SPEAKER_04Really, if this is if this is a small sample of Irish brewing, yeah, for sure. Get me to Dublin.
SPEAKER_05I don't know what the water's like there, but I don't know why I always mention the water, but it like when I it tastes clean. Well and Chris. What's that one? 8%? 8% what? Water.
SPEAKER_04No, eight percent alcohol. Not eight percent, is it? Six percent. Six per cent? Yeah. So ninety-four per cent of that is water. Water. So water's important.
SPEAKER_05There you go. Oh. How's everyone's week been?
SPEAKER_04Well, I've been anxious about this test, because if I mess up on this test. Oh, just like that, the beers are here.
SPEAKER_05One. This is one, two, two, oh shit. Shit. Like you'd read a book, one, two, three. Left or right. They all look very similar. They do all look very similar. Although, I know which one's Guinness.
SPEAKER_02I don't know, don't be too sure.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I know which one's Guinness.
SPEAKER_04I think I know as well. I know which one's Guinness. So what the um I'm gonna write down, I'm taking notes.
SPEAKER_05So we don't have money paper.
SPEAKER_04We got Black Gates from Bristol Beer Factory. Have you tried all of these stouts?
SPEAKER_05I don't think I have. I don't think I've had black gates.
SPEAKER_04No. What's the um what's the other one called? The Nitro?
SPEAKER_06It's it's uh called London London Black from Anspatch and Hobday. Oh yeah, London Black. And they're from uh started in Bermansey and then moved to Croydon. So it's Paul Anspatch and Jack Hobday.
SPEAKER_05Hobday? Why do I recognise that name?
SPEAKER_04Anspach and Hobday.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_04I'm just gonna go straight to the taste.
SPEAKER_05Smack and you or before you go, do you think you're confident with this, Pete? Sorry? Do you do you think you're confident? Yeah. Like as in not not just from looking at it, but you think you'll be able to I think I think I know now which one's the Guinness. Interesting. So um, should we explain what we got going on to uh just for the listeners out there? We have three uh glasses of identical looking Guinness stouts. Pete's already gone in. And we're trying are we trying to guess the Guinness or are we trying to guess them all?
SPEAKER_04We're trying to guess them all. We've got to identify the Guinness.
SPEAKER_05How much was the Guinness?
SPEAKER_04What percentage is? It's expensive, we got it in co-op. I genuinely don't think I'm recording it. I can't hear myself. You definitely are. I can definitely hear you.
SPEAKER_06You're all looking really nervous. What's wrong with you?
SPEAKER_05That middle one. I've changed my mind. That one on the end is not Guinness. Just from a sniff.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow, the middle one smells really chocolate.
SPEAKER_05Oh, wait, what the hell? You've got the right you've got the right way around.
SPEAKER_02I have no idea. Sharon, give him to me.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_02I have no idea.
SPEAKER_04I'm pretty sure.
SPEAKER_05That's really nice. I'm This is so tense. We're not saying anything.
SPEAKER_03But I gotta go first then.
SPEAKER_05Well, just give me a second. That's Guinness.
SPEAKER_04That's Guinness! I'm I'm saying two is Guinness.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, wait, wait, whoa, whoa, whoa. Hang on, whoa, whoa.
SPEAKER_02I'm also saying that, but Yeah, if I was giving them in the right order, then I do think two is Guinness.
SPEAKER_05We should have actually done this so we can copy each other.
SPEAKER_02Wait, but it doesn't matter what order it was in, because two will always be in two. That's not true.
SPEAKER_06Which one do you like the best though?
SPEAKER_04Well we the reason I'm saying uh shall I can I show my workings? Yeah. Two is very smooth and creamy, but has no body, no taste. It's I'd say it's more bitter than one. But don't worry me heavy. But it's not there's there's no depth to it at all.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I agree.
SPEAKER_05Three tastes like a sound that you'd have here. Yeah. Like three tastes quite coffee, so let's take very like coffee sound.
SPEAKER_04Let's take two out of the equation, because two is the Guinness.
SPEAKER_05Guinness. Hold on a second.
SPEAKER_02No, I'm convinced that two is Guinness.
SPEAKER_05One and two are very similar.
SPEAKER_02One and three are similar. More similar.
SPEAKER_05It's so difficult.
SPEAKER_04I reckon that is one is Black Gates. Three is the Yeah, I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_05Hang on. See, I would argue, I would say two has got more flavour than one. I think one's deader than two.
SPEAKER_04So I almost want to say that Guinness is one, but that's Flatgate, that's Guinness, that's London. Fortunately, we have some customers at the bar, so the suspense is gonna go on for longer. I think Guinness is number one. Play the music.
SPEAKER_05I disagree with you then. I think Guinness is number one. Right, so as long as they're the round the right way.
SPEAKER_04I have one, two, and three.
SPEAKER_05What? Oh, am I writing it down? Okay.
SPEAKER_04How do I know which ones uh unless the Bristol Beer Factory lads? Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I think Guinness is one. Which one so I think the Bristol Beer Factory wants number three enemies? No, there's two.
SPEAKER_02No, I think I think Anspak and Hof Day is number three.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I think it's a good one. I'm gonna copy you as well. So I'm doing that. Are you agreeing with Pete Max?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think so. I think one is I just think one and two are the different way around then. I think one is Bristol Beer Factory, two is Guinness.
SPEAKER_05Should we taste each other's?
SPEAKER_02No, this is gonna get really confusing. But I will say they all do look very similar.
SPEAKER_05But two of them, would you argue that one and two taste similar?
SPEAKER_02I would say one and two taste more similar than the other.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I think I think what um This is so intense. What Bristol Beer Factory have said they wanted to do was really replicate Guinness. So I think but they've added a bit more flavour. This is is it's a different thing.
SPEAKER_05You say that, but I think that the one that tastes like they've added more flavour is number two. Nah. I need to know the answer.
SPEAKER_04Two is flat as it's just it's just there's nothing there. Would you agree, Max?
SPEAKER_05I say got two's got more bitterness to it and more bite and more like beery qualities. It doesn't taste like Guinness. I like Guinness.
SPEAKER_02Uh I think as it goes on. What my one is Guinness. The more desensitized I'm getting to it, the more I think one and two taste very, very similar.
SPEAKER_05My one is Guinness.
SPEAKER_02Three still tastes totally.
SPEAKER_05Right, what do we think then? I think. Well, Pete, you start.
SPEAKER_02Three tastes totally different.
SPEAKER_04Two is Guinn well, right. Two is definitely Guinness. Um and I think one is Black Gates, three is um London Black. London Black.
SPEAKER_06Uh you'd be right.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05When that came I'm glad I said that, because I thought that I liked number one more because it was three.
SPEAKER_06I like one.
SPEAKER_02I like I like one, yeah. I like one. Yeah. Three is almost a bit too much. Yeah, I was wrong. Too much.
SPEAKER_04Um did you get the nitrous count at all? You have no idea how relieved I am.
SPEAKER_02Have you really been stressing about it?
SPEAKER_04I've been stressing about it.
SPEAKER_05Wait, yeah, so that's a good the that's technically a porter. Does that make any difference to you?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but that's what you got that that well you got a bit of flavour in it.
SPEAKER_05Cool, I don't know about the Mat can on that.
SPEAKER_02There's a lot of flavour in it. That's very popular, that that um London. Yeah. Wait, so so I've seen it on tap in in London.
SPEAKER_04Sorry, um we're not our usual regular sort of bonhomme now, because we've all got a bit stressed about this.
SPEAKER_02I'm not stressed at all.
SPEAKER_05I just I just enjoyed all of them. I'm a bit annoyed that I didn't get it, but also I'm kind of glad that.
SPEAKER_04But you you we all said straight away two was the Guinness, and then you you wavered. Yeah, you're just playing contrarian.
SPEAKER_05Maybe. I just wanted to be right if you were wrong.
SPEAKER_02I I don't think I I tell you what I would say is that the com the comparison between the Bristol Beer Factory and the um the Guinness is not like otherworldly. No. There's no reason. They taste basically the same.
SPEAKER_05So what I was saying about that bitterness then, that was the quality I didn't like, and that is the Guinness. Whereas like the one is just fast mover though. But and and you know But that like that that Black Gates is the most Guinness non non-Guinness I've ever tasted. I've never tried that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So I recommend that whole heart wholeheartedly. But I will we'll have to try and find somewhere that has in Bristol, close to source, um Black Gates on tap. Black Gates. Because we'd be like having Guinness in Dublin. Um I'm in Bristol next weekend. Good.
SPEAKER_04Um, because you just disturbed my loin loin loin? Line disturbed your loins.
SPEAKER_03Line of thought.
SPEAKER_04Um if and and I know because I've spoken to the good people at Bristol Beer Factory, they were looking to have a Guinness substitute, they have nailed it. But by just produ by just producing something as bland as Guinness, was yeah, so would you argue that you still don't like the the the black gate?
SPEAKER_02Or like I would argue that I don't like the more flavourful one.
SPEAKER_05What, the porter?
SPEAKER_02Yeah I wouldn't want to drink more than one point of it.
SPEAKER_04I mean, and you're in you're in very good company because that's why Black Gates and um Guinness is such a magic.
SPEAKER_02I would have what I would have one pint of that in front of a fire. I'm not blaming the brewers with a dog. I'm not on my lap. How big pint. Yeah. Do you tell that look you gave me? That's the kind of that's how I see I would drink that sat with a handle glass by a fire with a little dog.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it has to be like winter as well.
SPEAKER_02A little dog. And outside it's like Yeah. Logs on the floor.
SPEAKER_05So um I don't know what what we've proved there. Well, it proves I know my big pro Yeah, it proves Pete right to be fair. But but if you would you would you still shit would you shit on that black gate? Because I feel it was so similar. Yeah, and um you just think that they've they they went out to create another another Guinness.
SPEAKER_04They've done it really well. But you're saying why'd you what's the point of that?
SPEAKER_05Because people love it, I suppose. Yeah. True, but it's the market in the brand or the actual beer itself.
SPEAKER_04I think that the the market uh we're getting into philosophy here, aren't we?
SPEAKER_02I think that there's enough people that can you split the bee in Bristol Beer Factory or what? There are enough people.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you probably can. Not in a can, you can't fucking see any. Oh well, niggas. Fucking hell. Oh, you'd have gone stuff.
SPEAKER_02Three quarters of the pint, by the way. Yeah. Yeah, I'll have another one now. Yeah, exactly. It's a genius market interaction. Um I feel like it that the only way they'd be able to do it, for in my opinion, is if they had it and and the they'd have to have a really convincing bar member that was like, it is exactly like Guinness, trust me. Well, this is what they fucking do. And it's like a pound cheaper. This is what they did to the other. Because Guinness is getting more expensive. That's why everyone's gonna be able to do it. Is another like mass-produced one though. The Abyssal Beer Factory is still more quite independent.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. This one even says independent on it, this London Black. Independent nitroporter.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I think there's a there's a huge subsection of uh m late twenties uh to mid-thirties men who are obsessed with stout. And they want to drink stouts and they'll get really snobby about it.
SPEAKER_04No, well I like a I like a stout and they're and we've we've I I like to think we've demonstrated.
SPEAKER_02We should have put the put the more beer with it. I mean the initial taste on my lips is like water.
SPEAKER_05But I was I drank those really fast. Like when I was tasting them, I I was doing this sort of weird sort of like psychotic thing of like sip sip sip sip sip. Just to really like uh get it all in round. Because it is refreshing. Um there's a little more body to the black gate. But it tastes more it tastes more expensive. As uh I think kinners tastes so cheap that it shouldn't be fucking 700 pint in the places, it's mental.
SPEAKER_02It tastes so sort of taste like darker John Smith.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Are you ready for your last your next line? No, we're not.
SPEAKER_04We're just coming down from a I'm I'm very relieved that I got it right.
SPEAKER_05Wait, yeah, how many more of you weren't Pete? Congratulations. Two more.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay. We're gonna have loads of material then. I'm not gonna be able to edit well I could do it, I could do it tomorrow afternoon, maybe.
SPEAKER_04Afternoon?
SPEAKER_02That's that's in daylight. Morning to him.
SPEAKER_05When he yeah, tomorrow afternoon when he wakes up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. With breakfast. Yeah, you know, I'm living with you know it's nice.
SPEAKER_05How's the job hunt going? It's not. You're fine, you're happy in your employment.
SPEAKER_02No, I need to uh find something else eventually, but I'm currently quite busy, so doing other things. He's a muse. Yeah, he's right in bass lines. He's a what? Muse. I mean like you were part-time, aren't you? I would consider myself a museo. Mine's just a paid hobby. Yeah. Yeah. What does it what does that mean? Musician is. Let's get an official definition up. Museo. Yeah, it's like someone who's sounds like a slur. Who's like obsessed with music. A muso is an informal British and Australian term for a musician, particularly a professional or highly knowledgeable one. It often refers to someone. Oh, hang on. Rethink. It often refers to someone obsessed with music technicalities, gear, or trivia. Oh. Sometimes used in slightly derogatory way to imply that they're pretentious and overconcerned with technique. Nailed it. No, I think you're No, I agree, yeah.
SPEAKER_05But you're quite contentious. You are as well. Contentious, is that the right word?
SPEAKER_02Contentious is negative.
SPEAKER_05Oh. You're a koffo. What does What does contentious mean?
SPEAKER_02Contentious means a barista bore. I don't know why that word is in the back of my mind. Uh the official definition is describes topics, issues, or people likely to cause disagreement, argument, or controversy.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that yeah, that's not what I was I was thinking of then. What I meant was you're quite Should I symbolically just leave the goodness? I'll have it. What I was gonna say is I don't think you're very um uh pretentious with the way that you do your music. You're you're quite to the point as in like Pragm not pragmatic.
SPEAKER_04Pragmatic is a better word than contentious.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you're not that was wrong.
SPEAKER_04They're just where are we where are we are we doing a separate stout tower?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, technique.
SPEAKER_02Why? I feel like we've made our opinions quite clear, yeah. Yeah, but I don't I also don't think they're totally different content.
SPEAKER_05Why have you done that then? I didn't realize that. Well, you reckon that the port was the top one?
SPEAKER_02That one technically flak tasted nice, but I don't think I'd drink that more than once. Yeah, I thought. Yeah, because it you can have six pints of water. Yeah, well you've got to stay hydrated in this world.
SPEAKER_05I remember drinking ten pints of Guinness and throwing up in a royal oak bin in the toilet.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, hell yeah.
SPEAKER_05He wasn't there then.
SPEAKER_02Russ. Russell had to clean that.
SPEAKER_05It wasn't even Russ, it was Darren, I think.
SPEAKER_02Old, you old fart.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that was fucking ten years ago. Right, you're ready to clean it.
SPEAKER_02My sick was black. We are ready for the next one.
SPEAKER_06So this one is from Kinniger Brewery again. It's called Flying Saucer. We got the rabbit export stout at 6.5.
SPEAKER_04Oh my god. Now we're gonna get into some property.
SPEAKER_06The stout that you just had were 4.1 and 4.4.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well serious one. So the the the the can describe uh d portrays depicts? Depicts? Yeah, that's better.
SPEAKER_05I'm good with my words. Um other than ten minutes ago.
SPEAKER_02Some bunnies being abducted by now, so how do we feel about aliens? Fuck aliens. Don't exist, do they? Fuck aliens. Wow. They've been all but confirmed. By who? All but confirmed. Who's confirmed? No, we just fucking drank it again. Yeah, because you you got a problem. No, because I keep forgetting that we have to wait to broadcast. Right, let's clink and drink.
SPEAKER_05Clink and drink. We were out why we ever we're always out of practice. We need to put it on more regularly. We can now. No excuse.
SPEAKER_02Wow. I mean that is that is more flavour than all of the stouts we just tried. Yeah. That's really good. That's lovely.
SPEAKER_05That's beautiful.
SPEAKER_02But again, fire dog rich. Yeah, fire dog. Yeah. Like Land Rover. What ABV is it?
SPEAKER_05Oh, 6.5. Whoa, whoa! Flying Saucer is a rich, full-bodied, strong, stout, original. Shall I finish this or yeah, yeah, you carry on.
SPEAKER_01I just I am to quote the Irish.
SPEAKER_04To quote the Irish on top of the world, basically, because I got the challenge right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02This is all I've been worrying about all day. Fair enough. Well, congratulations. Pete was gonna lose his job, to be fair. If he didn't get it right, I was gonna take over as general manager. Again.
SPEAKER_05Against you to yeah. So flying saucer is a rich, full-bodied, strong stout originally brewed by the participants of the first Kinnigger Brewing Academy.
SPEAKER_02What they got their own school.
SPEAKER_05That's sick. You want to go to brewing school?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, why not? Let's go to government funded brew school. Um maybe in Ireland, I don't know. Probably. They pay uh they pay Musos a a living wage. What about in Ireland if you're like a professional musician, um you can get it's essentially like benefits, but you just get like paid a standard like because sometimes you have like busy months and sometimes you have quiet months, you can get you can get like a like a like a full-time wage.
SPEAKER_04Sorry to interrupt, but it's quarter past nine in on Thursday night. So at this point, I am legally obliged to say last orders at the bar, thank you!
SPEAKER_05Last orders last orders at the bar. Last order. So what are we drinking?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05What's our last orders at the bar? I think we've got one more to come, though. We get one in anyway.
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, we ought to probably do that then. What do we think of this? Lovely, nice.
SPEAKER_05Very tasty start. Alright. No, I like this. I think this is better than the um the other one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, no, I agree. I think it's better than the unspotten hobdough.
SPEAKER_01You have got one more.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so can you pour it up, please, shall we? Thank you. Pour it up. Because then we need a little postample.
SPEAKER_05This is more chocolatey, this one.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, chocolatey, it's very it's almost like dark chocolate.
SPEAKER_05Dark chocolate, 80% lint.
SPEAKER_02Like dust.
SPEAKER_0580% cocoa. It tastes like dusty beer. Dusty beer. No, this is nice. This is way better than that. This is top of my own.
SPEAKER_02Oh, Dusty Springfield.
SPEAKER_04No, Dusty Bin. 321. Don't you mean Ted Rogers? Who's Ted Rogers? Every time, every show I have to educate you. Am I looking it up? Yeah. What's that? Ted Rogers. Ted Rogers 321.
SPEAKER_02321 Hand.
SPEAKER_05Hand?
SPEAKER_02321. Wait, what? The video in slow motion.
SPEAKER_04Game show. What the fuck is this? It's a game show and they had a um they had adroits on. We're just on YouTube at the moment and you've not got an ad blocker.
SPEAKER_05No, well I have a V VM.
SPEAKER_01It's a 7.5.
SPEAKER_047.5.
SPEAKER_06And this one has got the highest rating on all of them.
SPEAKER_05Uh yeah, of course it still lasts. Wait, hold on, is it red? What is it? Is it like red? I guess it's red, isn't it? That's a good thing.
SPEAKER_06It's uh called shamrock, and it's an Irish breakfast doubt.
SPEAKER_05Oh shamrock. Is it what is a shamrock? Is it a four-leaf clover? Is that yeah, I was about to ask that.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_05Have you ever plant a four-leaf clover?
SPEAKER_02No, I don't.
SPEAKER_04Well, shamrock's not a four-leaf clover, it's a plant, isn't it? It's got four leaves.
SPEAKER_02This is a very stouty evening. I need a dog and a fire.
SPEAKER_04Either will do. I like this. It's got a little bit of port about it, isn't that?
SPEAKER_02Wait, is this a new one? What it's fruity. Shit, I didn't know we clinked and drinked, actually.
SPEAKER_05We didn't clink anything. It's a small can.
SPEAKER_02Uh so this is what? Like fucking three and a half million percent?
SPEAKER_057.5 actually. Well it smells like it's uh it's a breakfast stout, apparently. We love breakfast stout. Yeah, day jump.
SPEAKER_02It smells like compost. Do you remember Rubadinggy Rapids? It smells like Rr Rubadingy Rapids. It smells like the um It smells like compost.
SPEAKER_05What do you mean?
SPEAKER_02It smells like it smells like the whole, like the rooms that you weren't allowed to go into at primary school.
SPEAKER_05Which what do you mean? Do you remember that? Did you go distinct to me? What rooms are you not allowed to go into?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Yeah. See? What rooms you're not allowed in in the primary school? I don't know, like the where the where the stuff is, like the where the end where all the crap is, like not a tip from a classroom. The gym benches. Ping pong table. Yeah, you're not allowed. It smells like that.
SPEAKER_05That's such a that's worse than my squash reference.
SPEAKER_02Maybe there was someone in there, boozer.
SPEAKER_05I think it smells like berries.
unknownSome of the episodes really like it.
SPEAKER_05Berries? Yeah, berries go chits. It smells like it smells like the back seat of the berry super fast. I wouldn't sniff that if I were you.
SPEAKER_02I've sniffed so many people shit themselves on their accent.
SPEAKER_04To be fair, we both got berries back from London. And it never stopped. And the bloke just he was a maniac.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he's gotta be.
SPEAKER_04Literally overtaking on blind corners and things like that. I respect it.
SPEAKER_02Um I've got a few.
SPEAKER_05That's fucking good.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna sneeze.
SPEAKER_05Sneeze nerds? That's Gadim.
SPEAKER_02That's really good.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that was a really good sneeze, to be fair. There's no blurb, but don't need one. Do you not think that there's a little bit of port in there? I think there's that.
SPEAKER_05Well, like a sherry is it. Sherry's a better one. Fucking strong.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Including Guinness.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, um, so Guinness is a 3.77.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_06And the only one that beat that is the one that you're drinking now, is a 3.79.
SPEAKER_04So Guinness scores 3.77 amongst 3.7. But to be fair, it's the most mass voted on. What are we gonna do about it? How are we gonna change people's minds about Guinness?
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, live and let live.
SPEAKER_04What do you mean?
SPEAKER_02Just let them enjoy it if they want to.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, I d I know, but they won't find it here in the Etsom, will they?
SPEAKER_05No, they won't. We could have um That Shamrock though is we shouldn't s we shouldn't sleep on that's so nice. That's good, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02We could have black gates on it on keg.
SPEAKER_04Well why would you do that? Because we've just proven that it's it's just a Guinness substitute.
SPEAKER_05I wouldn't, yeah. I think it's a bit it's a bit um when you do I think I think what I forgot on there during that test, when I was going, oh what's the Guinness, what's there I've forgotten in this um Irish breakfast stout, Shamok is it's reminded me that it's I would much prefer a darker beer to have more flavour. Yeah, because if I'm opting for that. If I wanted a lager, if I wanted a a a lighter beer, I'd have that.
SPEAKER_02So the way I've always the way I've always viewed Guinness, whether it'd be right or wrong.
SPEAKER_05It's a diluted stout, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02No, no, no. The way I've always viewed it is that it's the only like real beer option available in some a lot of places, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05To be fair, a lot of the time I will have it because it's like still. It's somewhat not.
SPEAKER_02For a long time, and now I think it's changing because there's usually like an IPA on on keg in a lot of places. But like for a long time when I was 18 or whatever, there'd just be lager or there'd be Guinness. Yeah. And then it wouldn't, if they didn't have cask, then there just wouldn't be anything crafty.
SPEAKER_05Sometimes a cask in a lot of places is shit. Well yeah, rubber.
SPEAKER_02Precisely, so that's where Guinness comes into its own for me.
SPEAKER_04That's why Guinness wins is because it's consistent, it's rubbish, but it's consistent. I wouldn't say it's rubbish, I just say it's rubbish. It's bland. Potentially, yeah. Yeah. But that's when when I used to when I was a young man, everything was black and white. Still bombing the workplace. Even the beer was black and white. But you used to you used to go for the standard keg bitter because you knew it was safe. Yeah. Okay, yeah. Yeah. Because you couldn't rely on the quality of the cask house. Fortunately, you come to the Etsom Arms.
SPEAKER_02Which is why it's a premium, premium place to drink. It's a premium place in summer. It's the premiere place. That's the word that's the word, yeah. So not to be confused with actual premiere up the road, which is uh cou can.
SPEAKER_05They do cans here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Could you do cans? Could you do cans? Do you sell buzzballs in the office? Yeah, Magnum Tonic White. Um Sharon, can I please get a pint of Mustang before last orders? Because we're still gonna be here packing down, and I want something to drink before I'm told I'm not allowed to.
SPEAKER_04Well, that's a good shout. Yeah, so um we are still in Last Orders territory. I'm looking at my it's 2129.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you better hurry up. Sharon, can I have a pint of of stout, buy more beer, please? I'm just gonna well, we wanted to try it, and it's been a very stouty evening. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I suppose that I'm in that mood now. It fits with the Irish theme, yeah.
SPEAKER_04The St. Patrick's theme. Yeah. Are we allowed to vape in here yet? No, not yet. So um the only question the only question left to ask is what country are we gonna offend next week? Oh Wales, I think.
SPEAKER_05USA? Ah they'll attack us. Yeah, we have better stay friendly with those guys.
SPEAKER_02Um Wales. Yeah. Well we've we we've we've we talked about well, we talked about Newcastle.
SPEAKER_05Uh that's not in Wales.
SPEAKER_02This is sort of Scotland. North, very north. Can I have a high?
SPEAKER_05Wait, where's Hadrian's wall? That's that didn't they say?
SPEAKER_02That's the border between England and Scotland.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but it's also in Newcastle, innit? In the the border between Newcastle and Scotland.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, because if Newcastle is like right up there.
SPEAKER_05What was that mainly put in there for?
SPEAKER_02I did read this, so I'm currently reading to keep this Scottish out.
SPEAKER_05I'm currently reading um Sting's Autobiography. And he did tell me. Thank you, Sharon.
SPEAKER_02Why is that relevant in Sting's autobiography?
SPEAKER_05He's a Geordie. So you're talking about Hadrian's Wall? Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well Hadrian's Wall starts in the centre of Newcastle. When was in Wool's End. And I think he was from Wall's End, was he? The teacher at Wall's End, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_05He's from Wall's End. Oh, that's lovely.
SPEAKER_02By the way, I've just been handed a Mustang by Yeah, but it's got a shit glass. Dark Revolution. Ash is just uh mentally challenged. Look at the glasses. The glass is lush. The glass is cool. So, we've had a lot of fun today, haven't we?
SPEAKER_05We discovered the um I'd be really annoying and go for a bit for right now.
SPEAKER_02No. Because we're about to like we're about to close up. Alright, fine. I like how he waited for my permission.
SPEAKER_04Um I don't mind admitting that the stouts have been brilliant. Um They've almost overshadowed the pale ale.
SPEAKER_02I feel like I'm so trout treated by stouts, trouted by uh. But I've also Yeah, but I don't really like stouts. I mean that's uh I think that's a clear uh path of uh my um how I portrayed myself on this podcast. I don't like I don't really like stouts. I don't know. You say you finished What did you say?
SPEAKER_05What did you think?
SPEAKER_04I'm not sure we've um I I'm a bit I'm a bit giddy because I I won the competition. I'm fucking punished and I've now sort of relaxed and I've had the 8%. Is it 8%? 7.5 7.5. Uh I'm slightly lightheaded then.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, same.
SPEAKER_05I'm a I'm a I'm looking at loyalty. I think I'm a I'm a bit of a stout guy. I'm an alien. I'm a legal alien, I'm an Englishman in Ireland. Oh wait, I'm yeah, I forgot I've got this on.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's a fucking nerd.
SPEAKER_05I'm a Muso. He's a Muso, yeah, you are. I'm an I'm a Geordie Muser. He's a Poliso. Um no, I think I'm one of the first albums I bought was Outland just. Was it? Bought it in Antwerp. I've got a uh a uh an original pressing of that.
SPEAKER_02Why was one of the first albums you bought in Antwerp? I was on a cruise. How old are we?
SPEAKER_05Why are we buying fucking records on a cruise? Do you not think how am I taking it home? I was about Well, I was on a boat! No, but still, you still got to carry it. I only buy stuff if I know that I'm like 20 minutes from the air. Yeah, but look, you couldn't put it in a rucksack, could you? We had suitcases. You put it in a suitcase? Yeah. What if it warped?
SPEAKER_02Shut up. I'm more interested as to why Pete was on a cruise. How old were you?
SPEAKER_04It's one of these school educational cruises. Where's Andrew?
SPEAKER_02I've never heard of that before. We never went on any educational cruises. I went to CERN. It wasn't a cruise though, was it? No, it was a flight.
SPEAKER_04To be fair, the ship that I went on a cruise of was retired after the Falklands War. Okay. The SS Uganda, Google it. It's it's not glamorous. Yeah, but Ugandese. SS Uganda. SS, they've they they I thought they were. Where did you buy it from?
SPEAKER_05Uh Antwerp. Where's that? Belgium. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02Was it so why Incredible Story of the US of the USS UK? Was it new? What, the album?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Yeah, that'd be 1979?
SPEAKER_05I can't remember what when it was released. 78, 79? Yeah. And it had just come out and you heard of it. Had you heard of any of the songs on it? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it was down with the kids. So so was that your first ever vinyl album?
SPEAKER_04First ever album, vinyl album. My first ever vinyl. Have you still got it? Doubt it, no. Why wouldn't you still have it? Because uh we sold a lot of stuff at car boot sales.
SPEAKER_05Well, and you think, fuck it, I don't want that anymore.
SPEAKER_04No, not that we don't want it, we've just sold it for other we just Fair, to pay for the wedding.
SPEAKER_05No, after we were married, that's what we needed about it. Outlanders de Moore.
SPEAKER_04Outlanders de Moore by the police.
SPEAKER_05Oh, great album.
SPEAKER_04I don't know how we've got that.
SPEAKER_05Sharon can't remember.
SPEAKER_02I might have bought I might have your copy.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Yeah, it's got subtitles.
SPEAKER_02Um in 1970, SSU Gander was used in the children's film foundation film All at Sea.
SPEAKER_05There you go.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but wait, what's that got to do with war? I was on a cru it it was used as an educational cruise ship.
SPEAKER_02It was a hospital ship in the Falklands War. Oh there you go. Calls on Mother Hand. What did you learn? Mother Hand, Mother Hand.
SPEAKER_04We w we we cruised through the North Sea oil fields and we had lessons about oil.
SPEAKER_05Is that oil that we're not drilling? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we should probably get drilling that.
SPEAKER_02Don't drill.
SPEAKER_05What yeah, but we just rely on the the fucking Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Depends who you ask. I thought you were vegan.
SPEAKER_05Have you really seen the prize of diesel?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but that's only because it's only well, no, I it's not it's not part of our remit here. Is it not? We're all about the beers here.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but then you've got to use oil to make beers. Liquid gold. I d I drove here.
SPEAKER_04But have you seen colours? I bet you're not driving back. You bet not be driving back. I've seen the graph about the variations in the s US stock market between Donald Trump announcing he's in negotiations and 15 minutes beforehand. Oh, I did see that. The anonymous people lump on.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Surely that's got to be looked into, right? Oh yeah, well that'll happen.
SPEAKER_02It's like the the the e the clearest cut case of insider trading I've ever seen. Yeah. Like there's no.
SPEAKER_05It's literally like glitching GTA 5 where you fucking invest in Yeah. No, you can invest in something and then you shoot the guy. You shoot the guy, and then the stock market's go through the room.
SPEAKER_04To be fair, I watched a lot of Channel 4 news and they've not explained that.
SPEAKER_02No, it is it it actually is that. And then you have to wait until you finish the game because then you have loads of money, you can put it all into the stock of that company, of the rival company, and then you shoot the CEO of the company.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. And you can literally just like fucking rig the system.
SPEAKER_02So how do we stop that? Uh there'll be a tribunal for the next eight years, I expect.
SPEAKER_04We've moved over from the rest is beer to the rest of his politics now.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but it's interesting, because we're all living it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I guess.
SPEAKER_05Like we can't ignore it. Blatant, it's insane. We can't ignore it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but it's blatant, but then whilst we've been on air, he's just given a ten-day extension to the obliteration.
SPEAKER_03We turned into Saturday Not Live.
SPEAKER_05Your fucking your impressions are on point this evening. Have you been practicing it? Go on. I've been thinking about some cash, cash.
SPEAKER_00We were gonna ban them, but uh I don't think we were anymore.
SPEAKER_04So, right, we've had a great night tonight. We've had um four pails. Uh four stouts. Four pails, four stouts. Top of the top of the pails. How are you feeling? Because you don't like stouts, Ash, do you?
SPEAKER_05I like stout. That's Max that done like stouts.
SPEAKER_04It's impossible.
SPEAKER_05I think I'm a big stout guy. I was trying to say that. Uh every time I come in here, I often will end on a stout of a night.
SPEAKER_02I wouldn't do that. I'd only ever feel like having a stout if there was like uh a cold wind outside.
SPEAKER_04So, how are you feeling about stouts now? Have you changed your mind at all? No. Okay. I've just ordered a whole pint of a stout. Yeah, but you like stouts by your own admission, even though I got it wrong.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. Stouts to me is like a one and done situation.
SPEAKER_04One and done.
SPEAKER_02If I'm in the mood for it, I'll have a go and I'll have one. But did you not know. I could spend a whole night drinking sours, I could spend a whole night drinking pails, I can spend a whole I'd I'd I'd quite happy I'd want a six pack of these.
SPEAKER_05I like the shamrock. Uh as in these holding up listening. I'm not alcoholic. I want a six pack of this shamrock 7.5%. Six pack of that, and you're you've got a good night in your hands. How much is one of them retail for? Do you sell these in the outfit?
SPEAKER_04£7.30.
SPEAKER_05That's not bad. And there are eight available. What'd you say?
SPEAKER_04Eight available.
SPEAKER_05So you could get a six pack.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So if you had six of them, you'd be like. I think I'd buy that. I think I would buy that after tasting it. It's only a small can, but it's all you need for £7.5%. How big is that can? Like 3.30? That cup can? Yeah. Doesn't even say that it's a couple. Do you know what I can't it doesn't even say that on it.
SPEAKER_04So, anyway. We've enjoyed our stouts tonight. We've enjoyed our pails. We've enjoyed the Irish brewing.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, to be fair, there's not been a bad beer tonight.
SPEAKER_04No. Um we're really, really impressed. Um I am super, super pleased that I got the Guinness test right. Yeah, I'm happy for you. Good. Thank you. But I'm also I would despite his protest is enjoying the cheese and onion cheese and onion port boy.
SPEAKER_05I'm astounded by the similarity between the Black Gates and Guinness. Which I don't know if is it is a diss on Bristol Beer Factory or credit to them. Because they did what they were trying to do. Yeah. If that is exactly what they're trying to do. Because I don't think I don't think they've made a better Guinness. I get more yeah, maybe they have. As in, like, I don't know if they've done anything. At that point, would you just buy the Guinness?
SPEAKER_04It's all about lowest common denominator, isn't it? So I don't I don't know.
SPEAKER_05But yeah. Guinness cans bigger. I think I'd rather support Bristol beer factories. So I'd buy that. Well, I think that's a good one.
SPEAKER_02Even though they're not Irish, that's what it comes down to.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, why are we drinking that? They're not even Irish.
SPEAKER_01I've got three packs of skinny or two Guinness done.
SPEAKER_05You've got three guinness? Wait, you bought a four-pack? That's all we could do. Do you know you know why I invested in the Peter own Avon, Willie? Have you got a nitro surge? No.
SPEAKER_02I've got a nitro surge. The biggest con of all time.
SPEAKER_04That's good. I'm glad. Right. We're gonna wrap it up now, aren't we? Yeah, let's wrap this up. It's been a lot of fun. Um big, big applause to Sharon tonight because she's coached very busy bar.
SPEAKER_05As well as pouring out the most beers she's done.
SPEAKER_04Kept us in beer all night. Thank you, Sharon. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER_02Hey Sharon.
SPEAKER_06You're welcome.
SPEAKER_02My Sharona.
SPEAKER_04Not heard that a million times before. And um to my co-host. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER_05I've been Ash. Max. To my co-host What?
SPEAKER_01To my co-host.
SPEAKER_02Uh thank you.
SPEAKER_04You're good. Thank you. Thank you. We've had a great evening. We've been the Etsom Castcast. We will be back in a couple of weeks. And I think we might have an Easter special.
SPEAKER_05Fuck me, get your eggs out. Good night. Good night. Love you. Bye. Thanks, love you, bye.
