move, uh, you know, a place where you've made a lot of memories, neighborhoods where you've walked, normal routines and patterns, favorite coffee shop or restaurant or store. 00:02:23.120 --> 00:02:28.479 But usually what we find most difficult is leaving people we love. 00:02:29.439 --> 00:02:35.120 Maybe it is from moving or a job or other things, but to leave family or friends. Lord does not come. 00:05:23.199 --> 00:05:27.040 That to me is probably not the experience of most of us. 00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:31.759 That we are daily disappointed that our Lord has not come. 00:05:32.399 --> 00:05:41.439 We are not very often, like Spurgeon encourages us to be, to be on the tiptoe of expectation, always longing for the return of Jesus. 00:05:41.519 --> 00:05:51.839 And I think the reason is because so often our longings are more frequently and fervently for the things of this world and not for Christ. 00:05:52.079 --> 00:05:57.600 See, Revelation and 18 is gonna show because your merchants were the nobility of the earth, because all the nations were deceived by your sorcery. 00:10:39.200 --> 00:10:45.360 In her was found the blood of prophets and saints and of all those slaughtered on the earth. 00:10:45.840 --> 00:10:49.679 First point that I want us to see this morning is the fall of Babylon. 00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:57.759 Some ways is what we've been working up to for many, many weeks in Revelation, this fall, this judgment on Babylon. 00:10:57.840 --> 00:11:00.080 And there are two clear halves in our passage. 00:11:00.159 --> 00:11:05.279 Maybe you notice the first eight verses talk about the fall of Babylon, its destruction. 00:11:05.440 --> 00:11:09.919 The last 16 verses give us the funeral of Babylon. 00:11:10.159 --> 00:11:13.519 Now, remember, if you haven't been with us, Babylon is a picture. 00:11:13.600 --> 00:11:15.120 It's not a literal city. 00:11:15.200 --> 00:11:18.639 In some ways, it encompasses all cities, all cultures. 00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:24.559 It is everything that is wrong with this world pictured as a city. 00:11:24.879 --> 00:11:29.039 It is all those who oppose God and his ways. 00:11:29.279 --> 00:11:35.919 And this city, this fallen system, look at what Revelation 18, 2 says. 00:11:36.240 --> 00:11:38.159 It has fallen. 00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:41.600 Babylon the great has fallen. 00:11:41.840 --> 00:11:44.320 Now, friends, think about this picture for a moment. 00:11:44.559 --> 00:11:50.000 Not just this one individual city, but think about how monumental this is. 00:11:50.240 --> 00:11:55.840 This includes all cities, all cultures, in some sense, all of civilization is fallen. 00:11:56.000 --> 00:12:01.519 All that is sinful and wrong and opposed to God is fallen in a moment. 00:12:02.399 --> 00:12:12.320 Scripture is adamant that one day this sinful world and its fallen systems, sinful systems, will fail. 00:12:12.480 --> 00:12:14.720 They will be punished and judged. 00:12:14.960 --> 00:12:17.200 And this judgment of God is deserved. 00:12:17.279 --> 00:12:24.159 We've seen that in weeks to come, but it's highlighted again here because their rebellion against God is rich in sin. 00:12:24.240 --> 00:12:25.519 Look at verse 5. 00:12:25.840 --> 00:12:27.039 So telling. 00:12:27.360 --> 00:12:31.120 For her sins are piled up to heaven. 00:12:31.440 --> 00:12:36.399 Babylon, this sinful, fallen world, her sins are piled up to heaven. 00:12:36.480 --> 00:12:42.799 If you remember, the way the first origin of the idea of Babylon goes all the way back to Babel. 00:12:43.279 --> 00:12:45.600 This is an allusion to the Tower of Babel. 00:12:46.159 --> 00:12:52.240 When the people of the earth tried to build this glorious tower all the way up into heavens. 00:12:52.320 --> 00:12:57.200 They wanted to show that they were like God in some ways to take God's place. 00:12:57.600 --> 00:13:03.440 And what we see here at the very end of the Bible is that ironically, they see they succeeded. 00:13:03.759 --> 00:13:08.320 They did build a tower to heaven, but not a glorious one. 00:13:08.799 --> 00:13:12.480 They built a tower of sin and of shame. 00:13:13.200 --> 00:13:16.399 And what was at the very heart of that pile of sin? 00:13:16.559 --> 00:13:17.840 Well, look at verse 7. 00:13:18.159 --> 00:13:26.720 It says, She, Babylon, glorified herself and indulged her sensual and excessive ways. 00:13:27.840 --> 00:13:38.320 See, sin and this sinful world is filled with self-glory, self-worship, self-serving, self-exaltation. 00:13:38.480 --> 00:13:40.559 This is the way of our world. 00:13:40.720 --> 00:13:43.360 And verse 7, the end, makes it particularly clear. 00:13:43.519 --> 00:13:44.399 Look at what it says. 00:13:44.639 --> world thinks it's invincible. 00:13:55.840 --> 00:14:00.799 And a quote like this might seem a little bit weird to you, but it's actually directly from Isaiah 47. 00:14:00.879 --> 00:14:04.639 And I think in context, we can see something a little bit even more clear. 00:14:04.799 --> 00:14:06.960 Here's what Isaiah 47 says. 00:14:07.279 --> 00:14:11.120 You said, This is Babylon, the sinful system of our world. 00:14:11.360 --> 00:14:13.360 I will be queen forever. 00:14:13.600 --> 00:14:15.200 And then here's what the Lord says. 00:14:15.360 --> 00:14:24.000 So now hear this lover of luxury, who sits securely, who says to herself, I am and there is no one else. 00:14:24.320 --> 00:14:28.799 I will never be a widow or know the loss of children. 00:14:29.120 --> 00:14:31.200 Do you see the pride in that statement? 00:14:31.919 --> 00:14:34.159 I mean, it's incredible pride. 00:14:34.639 --> 00:14:39.039 I will do what I want, and nobody will do anything against it. 00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:40.639 That's the statement. 00:14:40.720 --> 00:14:42.879 And friends, we need to see that this is the spirit of sin. 00:14:42.960 --> 00:14:46.879 In fact, this is the spirit that lingers about that? 00:14:56.559 --> 00:15:09.919 I mean, realistically, if you think of even maybe a way in which you've sinned, even this morning or this past week, or if you see sin or battling sin in your life, is it not so often the sort of sin, when we sin, what we're saying is, I am and there is no one else. 00:15:10.080 --> 00:15:12.960 I care about me and no one else. 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:16.080 See, the Bible is very clear. 00:15:16.320 --> 00:15:17.679 There is an I am. 00:15:18.559 --> 00:15:21.679 But the only I am in Scripture is God Himself. 00:15:22.080 --> 00:15:33.840 And every single time that we sin, what we are doing is we are professing to be the I am, to be God, to stay up in the place of God. 00:15:34.480 --> 00:15:37.039 See, Babylon will fall. 00:15:37.279 --> 00:15:52.879 It's a long section, these last 16 verses of chapter 18, but we're gonna look at two primary points. 00:15:53.039 --> 00:15:57.039 We're gonna look at what their grief looks like and what their grief says. 00:15:57.440 --> 00:16:00.559 First, let's think about what their grief looks like. 00:16:00.879 --> 00:16:03.360 Their grief is deep. 00:16:03.759 --> 00:16:04.879 Look at verse 10. 00:16:05.200 --> 00:16:10.480 Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the mighty city. 00:16:10.720 --> 00:16:15.120 If you read through this section, if you remember, there are just woes after woes. 00:16:15.440 --> 00:16:17.039 This is repeated throughout. 00:16:17.120 --> 00:16:18.480 It's almost a refrain. 00:16:18.879 --> 00:16:21.200 Woe, the great city. 00:16:21.600 --> 00:16:32.000 The word woe is a word that is almost the most profound sorrow and even despair that we can feel. 00:16:56.960 --> 00:17:05.359 Verse 15, the merchants of these things who became rich from her will stand might, and glory of Babylon. 00:18:00.720 --> 00:18:02.160 Why do the merchants lament? 00:18:02.240 --> 00:18:09.039 Look at verse 11, because no one buys their cargo any longer, because all their splendid and glamorous things are gone. 00:18:09.279 --> 00:18:11.359 Why do the workers, the sailors, lament? 00:18:11.519 --> 00:18:15.359 Verse 19, because they became rich from her wealth. 00:18:15.920 --> 00:18:21.599 I don't think it's difficult or hard to see what is the driving attraction of Babylon. 00:18:21.839 --> 00:18:25.359 What is the driving attraction of this fallen world? so clear to us. 00:19:04.319 --> 00:19:16.640 I think why Paul is so adamant in 1 Timothy 6 10, he says this for the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, not money itself, but the love of money. 00:19:16.880 --> 00:19:29.440 And by craving it, wanting it, having to have it, some have wandered away from the faith, some have denied God and pierced themselves with many griefs. 00:19:30.319 --> 00:19:35.279 They've so craved wealth and money that they've actually pierced themselves with many griefs. 00:19:35.440 --> 00:19:39.599 What Paul states, Revelation 18, is showing us. 00:19:40.480 --> 00:19:44.559 That's what their grief looks like, but let's consider what their grief says. 00:19:44.960 --> 00:19:56.720 Because you might wonder why is there such a long and lengthy explanation, detailed explanation of the laments and mourning because of the demise of Babylon? 00:19:57.279 --> 00:19:59.119 Well, I think the reason is simple. 00:19:59.200 --> 00:20:02.799
