Have you ever come home from a tour and felt… off? One day you’re in the rhythm of shows, surrounded by your cast family, and the next you’re back home wondering what to do with the sudden space. That “in-between” can either drain you — or it can become one of the most rewarding parts of your career.

In this episode, I’m breaking down how to turn the gap into a season of rest, growth, and possibility — instead of uncertainty.

Here’s what we’ll cover:
✨ Why transitions after a big project or tour can feel so unsettling.
✨ What we can learn from athletes like Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles, who talk about the importance of having a plan for what comes next.
✨ Simple, practical ways to create structure in the in-between — from workshops, new training, and creative projects to rest, travel, and reflection.
✨ Why staying connected with your cast and community can help you move through the shift with more support.

Because without a plan, the gap can feel empty. With one, it becomes an opportunity to recharge and refocus so you’re ready for what’s next.

Welcome to the Artist Behind the Art, the podcast that lifts the curtain on what it takes to thrive as a professional performer. I'm your host, Jennifer Pierce, artist coach, creative strategist and lifelong advocate for performers who are ready to go from unsure to unforgettable, whether you're a circus artist, dancer, or singer, navigating auditions. building your brand or crafting acts that actually get the Yes. This show is your insider pass. I'll be bringing you candid conversations, industry insights, and real world tools to help you get castable confident and creatively aligned. This is where the gatekeeping ends and your journey to thriving in the industry begins. Let's dive in. Welcome back to the Artist Behind the Art, and today we're talking about something every performer faces, but not enough people talk about the gap between contracts and there are so many shifts that happen between when you move from life on tour to life back at home, and it can feel really unsettling if you're anything like me. You thrive on routines and having a rhythm to life, and some of the hardest seasons I faced have been those transitional times when a big project ends or a show wraps up and suddenly there is this gap of time that you really just don't know what to do with. And I can definitely say coming home after tour without a plan can go one of two ways. It can be a season of rest and awesome experiences. Or it can become an unexpected low point. So in this episode, I want to help you start thinking about the opportunities that you can create. So this in-between season becomes a time of rest, growth, and possibility. Instead of a place you get stuck. So while we're talking today about the gap that can sometimes feel uncomfortable. And most of us may have a week or two of an adjustment period that we just feel off. I want to take a moment though, to be sure you always keep this in mind if what you are feeling is more than just being down or in a funk. Take it seriously. And if you need to seek support from a mental health professional. And recently guys, we have seen athletes coming forward like Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles, and bringing attention to mental health. Sports and several athletes have said the most crucial thing for their wellbeing is having a plan for what comes next after that big moment, like the Olympics or a championship. And for us, that is a tour because we don't do these things alone and they come with different schedules and just. Different energy. And when we go from that shift, we go from having a team around us and a cast and our tech team and all of these things that just hold a different space. And if you're an artist, this shift can feel really, really just unsettling. And we have to have a plan in place so we can thrive. Guys, I've been there. I remember when I came off my first tour, I just hopped back into my old routine and while I was super excited to be home and have a bowl of craft, macaroni and cheese, I hopped back in. And honestly, I felt like an outsider. I went out with friends. I went back to my classes, and while everybody was excited to have me home. Things just felt different, and honestly, their lives had moved on. So that shift just felt really odd and I just didn't know where I fit in. So with that being said, let's connect on a few ideas that will give you both inspiration and permission to embrace that uncomfortable gap of in between contracts. Alright guys, if you do not have your next opportunity locked in before the tour ends, we want to make sure that you don't fall back into old routines that don't serve you anymore. So for me, once I got clear on how I wanted to fill my time. I lined up teaching workshops, started connecting with peers in a new way that felt good, and that really changed everything for me. I created a space where I reached out to new coaches I was excited to learn from and planned a small getaway, and that completely shifted my perspective. Suddenly instead of dreading the gap, I was looking forward to it because that's the key guys. If you have something that lights you up and you can look forward to it, it changes the in-between season into something you look forward to. For me, it was connecting in new ways and traveling. And for you it might be creating new material or something totally outside. Performing and you guys, because your body and mind need it. Here's your reminder. Make time to slow down and actually rest and get really clear on what real rest looks like for you. And then give yourself permission to rest, sleep, and reflect. And something else you can do is think about what you loved. What drained you and what you want more of or less of on your next tour? So I want you to remember this. The point is to choose something because without a plan, the gap can feel empty, and with a plan, the gap becomes an opportunity. So how do you start? Ask yourself what would make you feel energized? If you had a few free weeks right now, who could you connect with? Or what skill or project have you been wanting to pursue, but having given yourself the space, time, or permission to do so? So take a few minutes, write down three to five ideas because when you have these small anchors in place, you are in charge of the in-between. And here's what I want you to remember, most stay connected to your cast. Staying connected to them can make all the difference when you feel down, they understand this shift better than anyone else, and those connections can help you bridge the in-between. Thank you so much for listening today. I'd love to hear what you're navigating right now and what topics you want me to cover because this podcast is all about serving you and helping our community thrive.
