Presence That Connects: Four Ways to Stand Out Without Saying a Word
In this episode, we’re breaking down the often-overlooked skill that separates solid performers from unforgettable artists:
the way you show up before you ever speak.
Choreographers, casting teams, and directors aren’t just watching what you do — they’re paying attention to how you enter the room, how you engage, and what your presence communicates.
Inside this episode, you’ll learn:
1. Why appearance isn’t about being “perfect”—it’s about signaling readiness
Your clothing, grooming, and outward presentation are visual cues that communicate respect for the space, confidence, and professionalism.
2. How posture becomes your first introduction
You’ll hear how your physical stance can shift your internal state — and why standing with presence actually changes how others experience you.
3. The power of expression & eye contact
We explore how micro-moments of connection build trust, show engagement, and set you apart during notes, auditions, and collaboration.
4. Why acknowledgment is your secret collaboration skill
Energy isn’t one-directional — it’s an exchange.
A nod, a smile, or a thoughtful response says:
“I see you. I hear you. I’m with you.”
And that is what casting remembers.
If you want to elevate not just your talent but your professionalism, your impact, and your presence — this episode is your roadmap.
Thanks so much for listening to The Artist Behind the Art.
This podcast exists to support performers in building sustainable, aligned, and castable careers — beyond just the skills.

Welcome to the Artist Behind the Art, the podcast that lists the curtain on what it takes to thrive as a professional performer. I'm your host, Jennifer Pierce, artist coach, creative strategist, and lifelong advocate for performers who are ready to go from unsure to unforgettable. This is where the gatekeeping ends and your journey to thriving in the industry begins. Let's dive in.
SpeakerWelcome back to the Artist Behind the Art, and today we're talking about something that completely changed the way people see you before you even say a word. This is your cheat code to elevating your experience, the energy you bring in every room, rehearsal and audition. Here's the truth, choreographers, directors and casting teams don't just notice what you do. They notice how you show up. Your presence, your posture, your expression, and your energy speak long before you do so. In this episode, I'm breaking down the four ways to position yourself with great energy. The small but powerful cues that tell people I'm ready and I belong here. So if you've ever wondered what separates a solid performer from a memorable one, this episode is for you. Alright guys, so one of the most easiest way and obvious is your appearance because when you take the time to show up, put together, you are sending the message not just to others, but to yourself. You're saying, I respect this space and I am ready to be here. And. I know if I wake up and I put on something that makes me feel amazing, I step forward and I present myself in a completely different way. So how you show up on the outside directly affects how you feel on the inside. So. This is your permission to go shopping and to find something that makes you confident, capable, and fully you. Alright? The next thing is your posture. And your posture is your first silent introduction and people can just look by your posture and see how you're feeling. Are you feeling confident or are you a little unsure? Here's the key. Just like your posture affects and reflects your mood, it can also change. So in each situation, take a step back and scan your body and remember who you are and where you want to be. And then from there, set your posture from there. When we stand tall with our shoulders back and confident in our space. Our brain actually starts to believe that you are more confident and we feel like we belong and we show up in a different way. The next thing is expression and eye contact. And this one may take a little bit of practice if it's not something that comes naturally to you, but when you make eye to eye contact with someone, and when your face shows your listening, you're saying, I'm here with you. And that is so powerful because your expression is how you show empathy. Curiosity and engagement. And when a choreographer is giving you notes or if casting is addressing you, they want to see that you are connecting with them and that you are with them, and you are gonna be an artist that is gonna show up and be able to acknowledge that you know what they're asking for. And connection is what makes people want to work with you again and again. All right. This last one is acknowledgement and engagement. Energy is not one directional. It's like a conversation. There's an exchange, and if someone is speaking to you. The moment that you nod and smile and respond, you are saying, I see you and I am in this with you. And that's what choreographers, directors and teammates remember. Not just your skills, but your presence and your ability to syn with others match their energy while still bringing your own is what turns you from a great performer. Into a great collaborator. So while you can't always control the outcome of every audition or interaction, you can control your energy, how you show up, your intention and your impact and the energy you bring consistently builds your reputation. Faster than talent alone. And that's really what sets professionals apart from everyone else. And I don't want you to miss opportunities by being afraid to develop these skills. And this is something that you can practice in spaces that you already have a level of comfort with. When you practice eye contact and acknowledging someone, giving you notes, it builds in those reps and this is gonna become. How you naturally show Up, because on the other side is a version of you that has ownership of their talent and ability to connect on and off stage. How you show up on the outside changes how you feel on the inside. So when your presence. Body language and energy align. That's your cheat code for getting noticed, making connections, and becoming the person people want to work with again, again, and again.
