announced the coming of the kingdom of God. 00:05:07.199 --> 00:05:11.199 The first week we saw the king of the kingdom. 00:05:11.439 --> 00:05:15.120 Last week we caught a glimpse of what that kingdom is like. 00:05:15.439 --> 00:05:19.040 Today, how do you become a member? 00:05:19.279 --> 00:05:21.600 How does one get into the kingdom? 00:05:21.759 --> 00:05:25.199 What kind of person do members are defined not by their riches, but by their poverty, not by their brilliance, but by their neediness. 00:05:54.480 --> 00:06:00.240 Jesus is going to show us what kind of people get in and --> 00:06:39.759 We're talking skin lesions, nerve pain, loss of sensation, eye problems, breathing problems, a pretty miserable life, and certainly in Jesus' day, basically untreatable. 00:06:40.639 --> 00:06:46.639 But the pain of having leprosy wasn't just physical, it was relational and spiritual. 00:06:46.959 --> 00:07:03.120 According to Leviticus 13, if you were to go back to the New Testament, a leper had to wear torn clothes, leaving his hair unkempt, and he was to go everywhere crying, unclean, unclean, as a warning to anyone who might cross his path. 00:07:03.439 --> 00:07:08.560 He had to live apart from everyone else and wasn't even allowed to worship God at the temple. 00:07:09.680 --> 00:07:14.959 By Jesus' day, it had even become illegal to so much as greet a leper if you saw them. 00:07:15.040 --> 00:07:21.839 The ancient historian Josephus said that those with the disease were treated as if they were in effect dead men. 00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:27.600 Now this poor man, verse 40, is shut out from the fellowship of the people of God. 00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:30.959 He's shut out from the temple, he's shut out from society. 00:07:31.199 --> 00:07:34.160 He everyone feels about him. 00:08:02.639 --> 00:08:06.240 On this day, something is different. 00:08:07.360 --> 00:08:14.800 And he feels somehow the boldness to approach one person, to approach the Lord Jesus. 00:08:15.040 --> 00:08:19.759 And look at what he does and what he says as he comes to Jesus. 00:08:19.920 --> 00:08:23.920 He throws himself onto his knees before Jesus. 00:08:24.240 --> 00:08:25.839 He implores him. 00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:28.720 This is earnest and urgent. 00:08:29.120 --> 00:08:37.759 He's bold and sincere as he pushes his case and he says, If you will, you can make me clean. 00:08:42.639 --> 00:08:48.799 That cleansing wholeness lies entirely in the gift of Jesus for this man. 00:08:49.120 --> 00:08:52.240 At his will, this man can be made clean again. coming to Christ on our knees, as it were, in acknowledgement of his kingship, imploring him for the help only he can give, acknowledging our desperate needs, the uncleanness that we have. in his day and in ours. 00:10:03.519 --> 00:10:06.720 But is there nothing like leprosy among ourselves? 00:10:07.039 --> 00:10:07.759 He asked. 00:10:07.919 --> 00:10:09.759 And he said, Yes, indeed, there is. 00:10:10.720 --> 00:10:19.840 There is a foul soul disease which is ingrained into our very nature and cleaves to our bones and marrow with deadly force. 00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:22.720 That disease is the plague of sin. 00:10:23.600 --> 00:10:31.600 Like leprosy, it is a deep-seated disease infecting every part of our nature heart, will, conscience, understanding, memory, and affections. 00:10:31.759 --> 00:10:39.039 Like leprosy, it makes us loathsome and abominable, unfit for the company of God and unmeet for the glory of heaven. 00:10:39.360 --> 00:10:48.480 Like leprosy, it is incurable by any earthly physician, and is slowly but surely dragging us down to the second death. 00:10:49.039 --> 00:10:54.720 Worst of all, far worse than leprosy, it is a disease from which no lepers in our hearts. 00:11:26.960 --> 00:11:35.759 But after the shock of the lepers' approach, there was perhaps an even greater shock coming, and you probably know the moment, verse 41. 00:11:50.639 And immediately the leprosy left him and he was made clean. 00:11:50.720 --> 00:11:52.159 Now, just break that down. 00:11:52.399 --> 00:11:55.679 First of all, Jesus was moved with pity. 00:11:56.399 --> 00:11:58.720 That would mean uh compassion. 00:11:59.120 --> 00:12:01.039 That is something we've seen uh already. 00:12:01.200 --> 00:12:06.480 We saw his compassion last week as he raised Simon's mother-in-law, who was ill with her fever. 00:12:06.639 --> 00:12:11.360 Here is his compassion, and that is what animates the heart of Jesus. 00:12:13.039 --> 00:12:14.240 Friends, know that. 00:12:14.399 --> 00:12:20.559 When he looks at you, he does not look at you with disdain or reproach. 00:12:20.960 --> 00:12:24.320 He looks at you with eyes full of compassion. compassion with the leper. 00:12:58.080 --> 00:13:00.720 He reached out and touched the man. 00:13:01.919 --> 00:13:06.639 And just think, if you were that leper, what an amazing moment that must have been. 00:13:07.039 --> 00:13:17.679 Having lived for so long without human contact, cut off from society, perhaps years in isolation and pain without the touch of another single human being. 00:13:17.919 --> 00:13:20.080 Can you imagine what that would have been like? 00:13:20.559 --> 00:13:25.519 But then the touch of Jesus, it changes everything. 00:13:26.559 --> 00:13:30.320 And notice in the story how Mark sort of slows everything down, doesn't he? 00:13:30.480 --> 00:13:33.279 The camera zooms in and we see it unfold in slow motion. 00:13:33.440 --> 00:13:40.159 Jesus, filled with pity, stretches out his hand, and the eyes, man, the man's eyes grow large, wondering, what is he doing? 00:13:40.320 --> 00:13:41.360 Doesn't he realize? 00:13:41.600 --> 00:13:43.600 And then the moment of contact. 00:13:44.480 --> 00:13:51.840 It might actually be that the word Mark uses here when he says Jesus touched him, it might actually mean more than just superficial contact. 00:13:51.919 --> 00:13:55.919 Actually, it means that Jesus took hold of him, he clasped him. 00:13:57.759 --> 00:14:01.840 The first time in years, a moment of extraordinary tenderness. 00:14:02.240 --> 00:14:07.200 You hear his compassion enacted as Jesus communicates to him his love. 00:14:07.360 --> 00:14:09.600 But think about what Jesus is doing. 00:14:10.159 --> 00:14:14.960 When he says to the man with his lips, I will be clean. 00:14:15.519 --> 00:14:18.240 He's saying something extra with his touch. 00:14:19.600 --> 00:14:26.399 What he's saying is, Not only will I make you clean, but I will become unclean. 00:14:27.279 --> 00:14:32.000 I will become unclean, so that you can become clean. 00:14:32.399 --> 00:14:35.039 That is uh 2 Corinthians chapter 5, isn't it? 00:14:35.279 --> 00:14:45.120 But for our sake God made him who uh made him to be sin, who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 00:14:45.279 --> 00:15:05.759 Here is the shocking sight of this man riddled with the appalling effects of this skin disease, coming to Jesus, shattering every stigma and social taboo, and here is Jesus still more shockingly reaching out in love to touch him, being prepared to become unclean, to help this man, to make him clean. 00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:12.000 Jesus' selflessness, his compassion, his grace, his generosity is on full show here, isn't it? 00:15:12.320 --> 00:15:16.159 He identifies with the unclean that he might make him clean. 00:15:16.320 --> 00:15:19.679 And it's actually a lovely picture of the cross, isn't it? 00:15:20.159 --> 00:15:41.200 That there at the cross, the holy, the blameless, the harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, Savior, the Lamb of God without spot or blemish, is fully identified with wretched rebels, with unclean sinners, with lepers of the heart, like you and me. 00:15:42.320 --> 00:15:44.080 Galatians 3:13. 00:15:44.240 --> 00:15:50.960 It says, Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. 00:15:51.360 --> 00:15:58.480 He took our dirt, our sin, our uncleanliness that we might be delivered from it at the cross. 00:16:00.799 --> 00:16:09.840 And then if you look down at verse 44, you get a taste of the consequences for this man, a glimpse of what is possible now that he has been made clean. 00:16:10.399 --> 00:16:20.320 Leviticus 14 required anyone who'd been cleansed or healed of leprosy somehow to show themselves to the priests, and the priest was the sort of certified that it was true. 00:16:20.559 --> 00:16:24.559 And then you would go back to the temple and worship in gratitude and thanksgiving. 00:16:24.639 --> 00:16:40.000 And Jesus sends the man back to the temple to perform what the law required as a testimony to the priests, as though to say to them, What you couldn't do, what the law couldn't do, Jesus has done. 00:16:40.399 --> 00:16:46.799 All the law said to me in my these years in my suffering was unclean, excluded, down, and then we get to this weird moment when we expect Jesus to say, I fix your legs, and he doesn't. 00:18:00.559 --> 00:18:12.079 Instead, in verse five, he looks at this paralyzed man who cannot walk, who can't get there on his own, and he says, Son, your sins are forgiven. 00:18:12.480 --> 00:18:19.519 Now Jesus, he does go on to fix his legs, but again we get this idea that there is this to fix life and our own have finally proven futile. 00:19:25.599 --> 00:19:33.759 You know, when the reservoir of our own resources is finally empty, and as a last resort, we plead with Jesus to get
