My name is Adele Derbyshire, and this is my poem called Enough. Even though I am fully grown and feel I really should know better, inside me lives a little girl. I doubt you've ever met her. I've learnt to hide her well, you see, and rarely let her speak, or she worries far too much about what other people think. She's always scared and full of doubt and wants so much to please. She never stops, she just keeps going even when she's on her knees. Being perfect all the time is such a heavy task. Never making one mistake is far too much to ask. And though she tries and tries with all her might to always get it right, it's far too much for her to bear this constant daily fight. So today I reached inside and gently took her by the hand. I sat her down and smiled at her and hoped she'd understand. Every day you do your best, I said, and that is always good enough. On days you feel productive, and on those days that feel so tough. Stop trying so hard. It's okay. Relax. Stop for a while and rest. Put down the load. Breathe in. Breathe out. Feel your belly, then your chest. It's okay, I said, to say no sometimes to all of their demands. You didn't know, it's not your fault, but your life really is in your own hands. You get to choose, you have the power, you had it all along. You just need to be brave, my child. You may be sensitive, but I know that you are strong. Just be yourself, have some fun, and stay true to who you are. Let go of all that pressure, and you will see that you really are a shining star. There will, of course, be times when you doubt yourself and feel afraid that that is normal and to be expected, for you are human, not man-made. But remember this, my little one. Whatever you go through, your best will always be enough. You're perfect just as you are, just for being you.
