When Your Identity Outgrows the Environment | Career Evolution & Alignment
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Sometimes the problem isn’t the job.
Sometimes the problem is that you’ve grown.
In this episode of She’s BEYOND Elevated, Dr. Kimberly Dunlap dives into a powerful but often unspoken experience among high-achieving women: the moment when your identity evolves faster than the environment around you.
You may still be successful.
You may still be respected.
You may still be performing at a high level.
But internally… something has shifted.
This episode explores the emotional and strategic realities of outgrowing the spaces that once fit you.
Inside this conversation, we discuss:
• The quiet signs that your identity has expanded beyond your environment
• Why high-achieving women often stay too long in places they’ve already outgrown
• The tension between gratitude for an opportunity and the need for growth
• How identity shifts impact income potential and career direction
• Why elevation requires environments that match your expansion
Outgrowing a space doesn’t mean you failed there.
Sometimes it means you’ve completed the assignment.

Yeah.
SpeakerBeautiful. Welcome back to She's Beyond Elevated. Today's episode is called When Your Identity Outgrows Your Environment. Now, I want you to lean close for this one because this isn't about being better than anyone. This isn't about being arrogant. It's not about being impatient. It's about evolution. It's about recognizing truly the moment when the version of you that once fit in somewhere no longer does. My mother used to always say, you will never catch chickens mingling with eagles. An eagle has no business associating with chickens. One walks and eats from the ground, and one soars. I want you to soar. We all know that tension, that not being able to find commonality in the people that have you've known your entire life, not being able to have a conversation with people that you used to talk to for hours on end, right? Spiritually, we know what that feels like. Intellectually, you've seen it. And emotionally, you've seen it. You start asking deeper questions, right? So the conversation goes over some people's head, right? In in those environments, right? You start seeing patterns that you once tolerated, and you realize I'm unavailable for that. Like I do not have the patience to deal with this any longer, right? You start wanting conversations that stretch you, not just entertain you. You no longer have the desire to be the smartest person in the room. You want to be the dumbest person in the room. When there's a quiet tension that happens, and then one day you truly realize the room hasn't changed, but you have. So you start seeing patterns that you once tolerated, and then you start wanting conversations that stretch you, not just entertain you. Right? You start you start having interest in things that you have no knowledge of. You start thinking about retirement funds and and and um stocks and bonds and and and all of the things that you've never been exposed to. It's not that the room has changed. The room is exactly the way that it was, but you've changed. That's what's different. Now, how do you know when you've outgrown a space? Now, let me give you just a few signs of how you truly know that it's time to change the room that you're in. If you start to feel understimulated in conversations that used to truly excite you, we have all experienced this. Where you, if you're anything like me, like I grew up in a very small town, right? And and as I started to elevate, the things that looked so normal to me in my process of elevation, they looked extremely trivial to me. Right, you're shrinking your thoughts in these spaces so that you don't disrupt the dynamic of what you've always known. Right? You feel restless, you but not dramatic, right? Just like I want more, I know that there's more. Let me dip my toe in the more, right? Just misalign more than more than anything. It's it's just a true misalignment. You no longer are learning anything inside of these rooms that used to stimulate you, right? You're just managing the room, you're just there, right? That's usually the first clue. Outgrowing an environment isn't really a loud type of disruptive type of movement, it's subtle, it's a quiet awareness of you expanding beyond where you've ever been or a space that you've ever held, right? Because what usually happens when you've expanded, then that's when the the guilt starts to come in, right? So you start to again self-sabotage, you start to think maybe this job gave you an opportunity, okay? Um, because as you start to expand, the people who supported you once are the things that you're expanding past. So you feel guilty, right? Maybe this community felt like home at one time, right? You start to negotiate with yourself. Maybe I'm just being ungrateful. That's you know, that's my trigger word, ungrateful, right? Maybe I just need to adjust my thinking, right? Maybe I just need to change the things that or or lower my standards based on where I currently am.
unknownRight?
SpeakerMaybe it's just a phase I'm going through. Won't last always. But growth is not betrayal, it's not you owe it to yourself, your children, the next generation that you leave a legacy. The evolution that you're going through is not arrogance, it's your desire, and you get to have the desires of your heart. Okay. Now stay with me, beautiful, because when we come back, we're actually going to talk about why you stay too long in environments that no longer fit and what it's really costing you. Stay right there. Before we get into today's episode, let me share something with you that I use personally in my business.
SpeakerToday's episode is sponsored by Go High Level. And yes, I am a proud affiliate because I don't recommend anything that I don't use myself. If you're a coach, consultant, service-based entrepreneur who's tired of juggling five, six, seven different platforms to try to efficiently run your business, then Go High Level is for you. Go high level helps you centralize your systems, CRMs, emails, text messaging, calls, um calendars, webinars, even automation. All in one place. For me, time freedom is non-negotiable. Legacy doesn't require burnout. And Go High Level helps me build a business that works with my life and not against it. If you want to explore for yourself, you can learn more by using the affiliate link in the show notes. Now let's get back to that.
SpeakerNow, why do we stay too long in these environments? In that space, a space that you know all too well is familiar, and that familiar space feels safe to you. We stay because we don't want to hurt people's feelings, right? We stay because starting over feels exhausting. You know what comes along with that. It feels heavy to even think about moving in that space. But here's what's rarely talked about. When your identity outgrows your environment, staying becomes self-brayal. Because you have to start editing yourself, you have to soften your insights on things, you delay your next move because you're shrinking in the space that you are already in, and you no longer get to be stagnant. The longer you stay in a space that no longer fits, the more disconnected you become with the version of you that you are becoming. Now, exiting doesn't have to be explosive. Like I said earlier, like you don't have to make a big grand interest and slam walk out and slam your badge down, and you don't have to do any of those things. It doesn't have to be a dramatic speech. You know, you don't have to talk about it 10 minutes and explain how you feel and how you want to be there. You don't have to do any of that. Sometimes it's simply reducing access, not answering the phone when they call, right? Redefining your boundaries, declining invitations, updating your resume, changing your LinkedIn profile, subtle, small things, right? You don't owe anyone an explanation for your expansion. You can honor what a space gave you in that moment at that time and still outgrow it. Now, how do you move forward without shrinking? When you leave an environment, you've outgrown something interesting happens. At first, there's usually silence, right? So no applause, no validation, no immediate confirmation that you've made the right choice, none of that, just space, right? So everything's quiet, every single thing looks different, but space is sacred. Space really truly allows you to breathe differently, it allows you to think differently, it even allows you to imagine your life differently, and in that space where thinking and imagination and all of those things are blossoming, your next level finds you because the distractions and the noise that was once there is gone. So space is good. Now, let me say this gently. You don't have to make yourself smaller to maintain proximity. Now let me break that apart. If someone can only love you as the old version of you, not who you're involving in, to what you're doing with your life, they're not aligned with who you're becoming. And that is perfectly okay. I have a saying that I say all the time, I'm a lot to deal with. And I'm not for everybody, and that's okay. It's okay. Not everyone is meant to grow with you. I want you to sit with this question. Where in your life are you shrinking so you don't have to leave? And what would it look like to trust your expansion is not a mistake. Growth feels lonely before it feels aligned. But alignment, being aligned with your purpose, with the mission, is always worth it. Well, beautiful, if this episode resonated, share it with a woman who knows she's expanding, but hasn't yet given herself permission to have more or to be in a space of movement. So, so until next time, you weren't born to blend in. You were born to break ceilings, break out of boxes, and break generational curses.
SpeakerStay bold, stay brilliant, stay beyond elevated. Until next time. Well, beautiful, thank you for tuning in to She's Beyond Elevated with Dr. Kimberly Dunlap. If this episode spoke to your soul, share it with another woman ready to rise. Remember, elevation isn't a destination, it's a decision.
SpeakerKeep shining, keep walking in purpose, and I'll see you in the next episode.
