We took the podcast on the road! In this mini episode, we’re recording between stops as we were invited to speak at an event about all things podcasting. Come along for the ride as we share behind-the-scenes moments, a few laughs, and what it’s really like talking about our podcast journey. Buckle up—it’s a short, fun episode you won’t want to miss!
Hey guys, we were asked um something that we thought was a pretty cool opportunity to highlight some podcasting uh tips and and tricks and things that we do for our podcast, and we recorded it. So we're hoping that you guys can uh join in and watch that at some point.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so we're just at a little conference and we presented, so we're gonna share our presentation with you guys too. Thanks for being here. Check it out soon. It's just us being friends in a public space. Uh so we're gonna just play that real quick, and then we decided to present to you in the form of how we would actually record our podcast. So after the little clip, we're gonna get right into it, and um hopefully you enjoy. Thank you for being here again. We appreciate your support. Do we just not clean up our messes anywhere we go in public anymore?
SPEAKER_01And leaves all her trash. Oh, that's it. All over the floor and the chairs. I never understood. What are we doing with personal responsibility here? Well, I don't actually have vacuum the theater. Oh, you can't get your own popcorn bucket and throw it in the garbage.
SPEAKER_00Do you think you tell me? Uh-huh. Do you think that we are worse humans today than they were back in the day because of our social media and the ability to just say anything at any time?
SPEAKER_02We know so many dads that are like that, like our own husbands included. I'll say my father too was definitely not one of those, like, I go to work, I come home, I sit in my easy chair, like he played with us. I can definitely remember him like rocking us to sleep. That instinct to me is like that's a father.
SPEAKER_00It's so important and the same thing. What you are doing internally, you're gonna see you know, externally, and I felt like another way we don't take care of ourselves. I got to see a softer side. He would come into my room after I would get in trouble, and I'd be like laying in my bed, like and he would like come and like lay by mom. Like I loved seeing that like softer side, because usually he was the one that was like uh hard, like disciplined. Right, but he allowed her that and he supported her, but he came and silently like you know comforted me. Just like I'm here with you in the trench. It is really cute. I love it, especially knowing you're dad. The one MM song where he like says op in it. I was like, no, we don't. And then I'm like, yes, we don't.
SPEAKER_02We do.
SPEAKER_00Like when I run into somebody in the grocery store, I'm always like, oh, sorry.
SPEAKER_01Oh, why do we open? The op for me is like cute. The hearing that strong, like Michigan accent.
SPEAKER_02Remember, when we met kids from other states and we were like, you guys have a crazy accent. And we were like, we don't have one. And they're like, you hundred percent real.
SPEAKER_01We had it saying their names. Oh gosh. Oh, I really feel like we sound like the broadcasters on CNN. That's what we thought. Yeah. No. Now when I hear myself, I'm like, oh, it's so bad. You sound like the mom from Bali's world.
SPEAKER_00I still think we sound like everybody.
SPEAKER_01We sound more neutral than some of the like distinctive zones, like southern accent, even I feel like Pittsburgh accent. Well, I never thought we had an accent.
SPEAKER_00Uh intonation. Like even my nephews, because my brother-in-law is from Pennsylvania. Instead of saying like, I'm not going, they say, I'm not. Not gonna go. And I'm like, ah, Pennsylvania. That's pretty strong. We're from Michigan, it is what it is. It is what it is. Oh hi Heather.
SPEAKER_02Hi, Gina.
SPEAKER_00How are you? I'm good. I'm here. How's your week been? It's good. I've been, you know, getting good quality sleep, sleeping on an air mattress.
SPEAKER_02A lot of highs, a lot of lows this week. Sleep is definitely suffering.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02Can I also just say, too, that we've put ourselves out there for the whole of the world, the internet, but this group is making me extra nervous. The most nervous I've ever been. Never been worse.
SPEAKER_00So uh let's get right into it. And uh yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so our podcast topic today is what about our podcast? Why did we do it? Why are we doing it? Uh, what motivated it? So I'm gonna send the first question to you. Why did I say you slash we decide to start a podcast and what goals did we have for it?
SPEAKER_00So initially it was me dragging Heather along with me, um, but I am a big fan of podcasts. It's one of my main things that I listen to. And um above that, I also felt like there was a space for me as a mom, um, kind of, you know, going through middle age and my kids being busier, and you know, my husband owning a business, and just feeling like there's something more for me, and we are in this, you know, day and age of sharing and and all of this. And I feel like there's got there's got to be a space that I'm able to share some thoughts, maybe that I have, but nobody wants to just hear me. So I thought, what better I'm I'm authentic with you.
SPEAKER_02Which is why when you asked me, I said, nobody wants to hear us. Like, what do I have to say that isn't already out there? This is a growing space. Yes. And I feel like whatever we have to offer, it's probably already out there. But that is uh something I had to just get over because I do feel like uh it's kind of a project for us personally to just have something that we love and it's creative. But I also do feel like there's a space where there's a lot of great podcasts, a lot of funny ones, a lot of women, a lot of faith. Uh, some of the women podcasts are very uh not something I would listen to personally. I'm just gonna say that. I'm on no judgment. But uh we're not overtly a faith-based podcast, but I feel like that's a little space where we're interjecting and just being authentic from start to finish about our whole life.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we're sprinkling in things that we're getting, you know, positive feedback and comments about that have encouraged us to feel like, you know. Right. Yeah. So I will ask you, what does our podcast cover? And who is the intended audience, which we found out is not Josh Gailey. No, not Josh, she told us.
SPEAKER_02But there have been several brothers from camp this week who said, Oh, I listened to your podcast. And I'm like, Really? Are you? Have you heard the whole thing? Like, it does tend to be, I will say, I feel like our intended audience was women at our stage of life, or maybe a little younger, older, fine too, but going through similar things. And the name is Life Out Loud. So it was more about something generationally, maybe it's social media. I feel like we do want to hear more people being authentic, and even when it's like the the icky stuff or the hard things, because then you feel seen, you say, Oh, them too. So I feel like we did definitely think our audience was going to be primarily women and hopefully some younger women, if we could offer them any hope about how hard motherhood is and there's transitions and stuff. So I certainly wouldn't discourage anybody from listening. We love the people who listen because they love us and tolerate us, but I definitely feel like that was our imagined audience or who we thought we were reaching out to. For sure. And as far as what does it cover, I think you saw from the clips, it's um week to week we might have a really important topic that we feel like we want to talk about, something that's coming up and like cultural or whatever. Sometimes we're just chatting like friends, and that's kind of the approach we've taken. Is sometimes we'll call the episode like it's like having brunch with a friend. Yeah, we want to be here. If you're stuck in your house with little kids and you don't have brunch with your friends right now, listen in. And then if you want to talk to us, like find us on the socials or whatever, so we're there for you.
SPEAKER_00I think we forget we're recording sometimes too. I think we spent like 35 minutes talking about the perfect jammy egg.
SPEAKER_02Like a hard boiled, a soft-boiled egg.
SPEAKER_00Some things are important, some things aren't.
SPEAKER_02Right, not so much. All right, so let's transition to the next question. So this one's gonna be funny. I can't wait to hear what you say about it. What is our process? What does it look like from the time we brainstorm or plan an episode to when we're publishing something on all the different outlets for a podcast?
SPEAKER_00So um that question is interesting because as similar as we both are, we're also different in certain areas. Heather likes a little bit more of a plan and a process. I'm a little bit more fly by the seat of my pants, but we um it's different week to week. And as far as our process goes, a lot of times it'll be um a hot topic that week that we've seen in the news, or it'll be something that we've discussed, or if it's leading up to Mother's Day or Father's Day, or it might just be the minute we're getting ready to record. We're like, you know what? No, let's talk about that. Yeah. Um a lot of back and forth over text. And as far as the um recording and and all of that, that's um where's our where's our studio? Our studio is in my basement, and we record on a uh card table. And most times I'm cleaning up water bottles and socks that Gianni left behind. And uh, this last episode we recorded the card table like collapsed on us mid-air, so it by no means is perfect, but it's our little project, and week to week it's something that we've you know committed to each other to carve out that space for ourselves. So the process is pretty flexible being yeah, ours.
SPEAKER_02Boy, we got some husbands in the audience too who need a shout out because the brainstorming, the talking, we're very, very good at that, clearly. Then it's a raw piece of messy footage, right? Yeah, and thank God for our husbands who are both very tech savvy and they do all the editing, but we've also learned new skills through this. We've learned how to make clips for ourselves. I feel like this is like bringing on new skills that I can see how I can apply them in different places in my life. But uh, so then pushing things out on social media so people know we have a podcast. Thank God for our tech-savvy husbands who help us with all of that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So, what are, and I might have just given one away, what are some of our interesting, funny, surprising, challenging moments that we've experienced along the way?
SPEAKER_02Okay, so for sure, we were me and Chris were just looking back. We've done 40 episodes and we've done one a week. So that is three quarters of the year. I think we're like nine months into this, which pat on the back, I'm surprised. It feels like it's been faster than that. But that was the first time our table fell mid. We were just working with a Costco, some nice equipment thanks to Brother Ryan and Smash Create. I'm sorry, I think that's me. Uh some nice equipment, yeah, but also we're just in your basement. So that was a little fun to deal with. And we told Chris maybe he can make an outtake of it sometime. Because you know, if you know me and Gina at all, the table falling was like a drama, but the 20 minutes of giggling that followed, like we could not get back into the like what was that? And we're both at an age in our lives where we thought maybe we just hadn't drank enough water that day and our equilibrium was off because when the table started slanting, we were like, Do you feel spacey? I mean, literally, it was collapsing in front of us. But um the mouse on the wall. That's a silly one. Oh, or we were recording in Gina's daughter's bonus room, and there was scratching and the walls, and all I could think about was like, Do you have mice? Should we stop in the dress? Is this a squirrel? Is he gonna be on the podcast? So it's not glamorous, no, but a heartfelt thing that I think surprised me is because I had such a hard time going into this, thinking that there was a space or a need for my voice, your voice on the internet anywhere. And a lot of our supporters are our friends and family from church or extended, you know, neighbors, people who are they love us, so I feel like they tolerate us or endure it. But this was just, I wanted to double check with Gina before I said it. Just a random Mary Catherine something. We do not know her. Just sent us a message this week, which really bolstered our, you know, why are we even presenting at camp? What do we have to say to anybody? What are we doing? I just started listening and I love this podcast. I'm always on the hunt for some girls hanging out and just talking. It's still clean and I love it. So excited to have found it. So we responded, thank you so much. That's why we're here. This is exactly what we were hoping. And then she also replied, and I appreciate your references to your faith. I can't wait to bidge them all. So, like Brother Josh said, like, uh, we certainly did not set out to be an overtly faith-driven podcast, but we're really hoping that there's opportunity there just to show people a cleaner, you know, authentic podcast that also we're sprinkling in those things that maybe they're curious about, you know, or they don't have. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00There's a space to live out loud, live your life out loud, like we carefully.
SPEAKER_02Carefully if your family in the room, we're careful.
SPEAKER_00We're super careful. We have given some Cindy.
SPEAKER_02We're not giving that away any dirty, yeah, any dirty business.
SPEAKER_00But there is space for that to be able to show that you know life can have a balance. You can be busy, you can have be a mom and running all around and and living authentically and doing things that you love, and also remembering, you know, it is about the Lord and it is about living your truth, and you don't have to hide that. So that is, you know, very much sprinkled in what we say.
SPEAKER_02So, next question Has there any ever, excuse me, any ever been anything that surprised you about doing a podcast? Is there something different or better or worse than you imagined it would be?
SPEAKER_00I think I would probably say, you know, it started with like, hey yeah, we can do that too. Why not? Let's give it a shot. And it ended up, you know, being a lot of a lot more work, a lot more um time spent. And sometimes it can feel a little like, you know, like what are we doing? We're so busy.
SPEAKER_02It's like a part-time job that we've given ourselves.
SPEAKER_00It's a part-time job. But what I think the important lesson from that, while that has been surprising, it's also been important to remember that we do deserve to carve out time for ourselves and our little passions. So it feels good to know that while it's been way more work than you know intended, it feels amazing to know that we're sticking true to no, this is something we're excited about and we wanted to do, and that's important, I think, right now in our lives.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I feel like early on, one of our um podcasts was about like adult friendship, how difficult that can be, like transitions and how you're making friends as an adult or keeping friends. We talked about like raising daughters, and I feel like we end up hitting on all of this stuff. Like we do deserve time as women to make sure that we're doing something that like lights us up and makes us happy, but also we deserve time to dedicate to our friendship. It's been we've spent so much time together lately, and life just gets really busy, and that wasn't always a it wasn't always a priority, or you know what I mean. I love you dearly. But we just didn't have the time as women, moms, busy moms, to say, like, well, I'm spending time with Gina today. It's almost like it forced us to say, you know, this is important.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, we would say it's worth our time.
SPEAKER_02Like a random brunch, yeah, and it would be every few months, and now it's turned into and then we had to like apologize and keep tipping our waitress because we were there for hours, and they just I mean, the eggs were so far gone. It was like they were closing, and we were like, but we haven't caught up.
SPEAKER_00It's been three months. Yeah, what we were there for four hours once my mom tracks every move I make, and she was concerned, she thought I got kidnapped, and I was like texting our entire family because I wasn't responding. So this prevents that too. My mom knows where I'm at because I'm at home.
SPEAKER_02In your basement, safely in your house.
SPEAKER_00I'm in my basement. Um, so I the last question that I have is what have you learned and what advice would you give someone who might be interested in starting their own podcast?
SPEAKER_02Okay, so I feel like why on earth would I give anybody advice? We have no advice. Nine months. But what I do wish I had done sooner, and I would say to anybody, is if this interests you at all, don't overthink. Don't say no, there's no space for that. Nobody wants this. Try it. Worst case scenario, it was a lesson, or you tried it, you have no regret. In best case scenario, you stumble into something that you really enjoy, or it gives you a new avenue to share something that you're passionate about. And I feel like for us, we were pretty fortunate. The equipment, that kind of stuff was not, it was like low barrier to entry. We didn't have a lot to but I don't think it takes a whole lot to get started. Like one, maybe one microphone, your camera, your cell phone, and then uh if you're loving it, you can always build on from there. You know, if it's successful, you keep going and you add on.
SPEAKER_00And believe in yourself.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I will say my biggest advice is just don't just don't just automatically know anything. If it's podcast, if it's anything that you think could contribute, don't automatically know it. You don't know who out there is looking for something to listen to or share.
SPEAKER_00So and you never know where your next connection can be. You know, you're obviously a place where some people have found a comfort in, and who knows what that can open up to or hopefully, that would be wonderful. Yes. So that's all we got for today. Thanks for being here with us, Gina. Thanks for joining us.
SPEAKER_02And thank you all for being there.
