Wylie:

All right, this is Blunders and Dragons, and I am your host, Wylie Sloane.

Kipo:

I'm your host, Kipo.

Mimir:

I'm your host, Mimir.

Brad:

I'm not your host, Brad.

Wylie:

And uh today for our behind the scenes episode, we're gonna be chatting about our personal experiences with DD, how we got connected with DD, and some of the things that we enjoy about it. Um so who let's roll to see who goes first. Oh gosh.

Kipo:

What do you want? Oh 20.

Wylie:

It'll be our initiative order.

Kipo:

That's not good. That's not good. I got a net one.

Brad:

I got a net one. I'm gonna roll a net one.

Mimir:

That's first. I rolled a natural nine. So there's that.

Wylie:

Well, I rolled an eleven.

Brad:

It's gonna be a great start.

Wylie:

You know, it's good for getting those bad rolls out right now. Um I rolled an 11, so two natural ones put together. So I think that means that I am destined to start us off.

unknown:

Makes sense. Okay.

Wylie:

So my uh my first experience with DD was I was on a road trip with my husband. It was a long road trip across multiple states. And he was like, Here, I found something to play. I think it'll be, you know, to play in the car. I think it'll be fun to listen to. And I at he at the time that podcast was called Drunks and Dragons. It has now changed to Greetings Adventurers. Um, but he put that on and we played it in the car. And I didn't really know anything about DD at the time, maybe just a little bit of exposure from Stranger Things and some other media. Um, but I really enjoyed it, and I thought that it was a really fun way of storytelling and having adventures together. So that's where it started. And I listened to a lot of DD podcasts um over time. Um, I love listening to DD podcasts when I'm doing my chores, um, you know, driving for long distances. So that's been um, you know, a really fun way to fill up the time and keep it enjoyable. And then uh during COVID, I had a group of friends that had started playing DD and they started playing remote and they invited me to join. And I was really, really excited, and it was great because it was during COVID. So we were playing remotely, but we had the opportunity to play together consistently because it was COVID and we didn't have much else to do. And uh for me that was it was really great to have a group of friends that I knew I was gonna get to see every week and to have those friendships, not just the game, but to have that consistency of like friends to to keep you going and that you were gonna see. And um, so it wasn't just about the gameplay, but definitely that was a big part of it.

unknown:

Nice.

Wylie:

All right, um, I guess our next one is Mimir.

unknown:

Yes, I'm Mamir. Um I started uh watching, so I I did improv uh in high school, but I was a jock, so it was like my like side hustle basically, is doing uh improv in high school, starting an improv club, things like that. Um, and then I started watching uh DD Critical Rule, episode uh I think like five or six, um, and I was like, what is going on here? Like on Twitch that I saw it pop up and I was like, alright, I'll I'll watch this. I saw Travis Willingham, this big jock dude, and I was like, alright, this guy can play DD, that means I can too. Um and it's not all nerdy and stuff. So I was like, okay. Um, and so I was like looking around for DD people, and I heard one of my friends uh played, um, and I saw her in the store, and I was like, hey, like just in public in the store, hey, do you like still play DD and stuff? I would love to join. She was like, no, but I know this person uh that plays, and so I r went over to this random person's house and started. He's like one of my best friends now, started playing DD. That was in 2015. I've been playing for about 10 years now. Uh I've been DMing also for like five uh probably six or seven years. Um memorized all 5e um very much. Uh yeah. Love, love DD, love the chaotic nature of it, the storytelling um aspect of it. Um yeah, love everything about it.

Wylie:

Awesome. Alright, I think we need a roll off between Brad and Kipo.

Brad:

Fifteen? Eleven. For the wedding. Uh yeah, I'm Brad. Um, let's see. I think it's mmm. What? How long has it been since I started? What would you say?

Kipo:

Um was it winter time?

Brad:

No, it was winter? Yeah, I think it's been about like four or five months. Yeah. Maybe it's six months by now. I don't know. It's somewhere.

Wylie:

I think it was March or April that we had our first session together.

Brad:

So um, yeah, so Kippo over here, um we we become friends and we uh introduced each other to each other's hobbies. Uh I introduced him to disc golf because that's what I love to do. Rip it and rip it. Yeah. And uh so he introduced me to D D. Um yeah, for me, I've always been curious about D D. Um, but I I was never really had the chance to play or anything. I had been invited to play one time, but just schedule-wise, I wasn't able really to commit. Um greatest killer of all DD is schedules. And so um when Kippo had invited, he said, Hey, we we just uh you know um schedule as we can play. And so I was like, Yeah, that that works for me and my schedule. So uh just started getting into the world of DD, listening to podcasts, trying to figure out how to play. Um got to play a few sessions. Uh how uh met a lot of these guys. So yeah, I'm somewhat new to it, but enjoy and uh it's been a lot of fun.

Wylie:

So you've played like two or three sessions, right?

Brad:

I think it's just two.

Mimir:

I'm so ready. Yeah. I'm so ready.

Wylie:

That's okay. That'll be fun for our listeners who are newer to the game as well, for sure. But you also have listened to some DD media, right?

Brad:

Correct, yeah, yeah. Uh I listened to a lot of uh what, Tales from the Stinky Dragon. Uh, I've listened to uh Dungeons and Daddies, um, a little bit of critical role. Yeah, just a little bit here and there been checking out.

Wylie:

Nice. Alright, K ipo.

Kipo:

That leaves me. Yeah. Um, so kind of like Mimir, I was introduced around uh 2016. Um back in college. So my roommate and and best friend, um, we were kind of watching Stranger Things, and that kind of inspired him to get into it, and so I uh was just doing what a friend would do and support him when he said, Hey, I really want to play DD. Like, okay, like I love games and stuff like that, but I had never played um any tabletop RPGs or anything like that. So yeah, we uh we got started and all newbies, all five of us, uh had never played before. We played for about two semesters um weekly. So we had some nice uh experience growing there, but um we uh we just kind of disbanded after about a year, people started moving and graduating, and so we had to stop. And so I didn't pick it back up until we moved uh to here. Can I say where that is? Okay, yeah, in Alaska, so um I didn't know if we were doing locations. Uh so yeah, once we moved up to Alaska in 2020, um I had not played since 2016 and made friends with uh Mamir's friend, and they invited me into their group uh to just play a session, and it just re-ignited my love for this game and the the worlds that you can be in and create and the characters and yeah, so just on and off over the past five years. Uh just been pla uh playing a bit, learned a DM, and I uh I'm very excited.

Wylie:

Yeah, as Kippo mentioned, we are all in Alaska right now. Um, and I think Alaska is a perfect environment for playing DD because while the summers are amazing, the winters are cold and dark and long, and that's you know, you're not missing outside. So it gives you a nice way to go on adventures, uh, but still just stay in in your house at your kitchen table or in your basement, like we are right now. Um I'm gonna ask a really divisive question. Critical role or dimension 20. Oh man. What is your preference?

unknown:

Preference. Goodness gracious.

Wylie:

It's just what you personally prefer. We we all acknowledge that they're both fantastic, right? Nobody hates either one. They're we love Dimension 20, we love critical role, but personal preference.

Mimir:

I think for the storytelling aspect, um Dimension 20 has more fun, has more fun moments, and they do have very serious moments, um, but they have more fun moments, and I love um the way uh Brennan Lee Mulligan uh does his style of like fun, encouraging, and things like that. On uh the reverse side, um, so I won't give you an answer, but on the reverse side, uh Critical Role does a fantastic job of like drawing you in, um, making you want to play DD and just being like, oh, I am living the moment, living the time. Um, and so uh I love them both equally. Um and I love I love the way Matthew Mercer just uh you you feel in the world during the moment and the time and things like that that's happening. So good at that. Yeah, yeah. Both of them do a fantastic job. Um, and they're about to start uh their fourth session or fourth uh campaign at the time of this recording. Um and so Brennan I I'm so excited to see, like I love the them talking to each other and stuff, and that's awesome. It's been so cool. Yeah. Yeah. Did you pick one? Or did you just I refuse to pick one? I love both of them equally for different aspects. Um yeah, yeah, love them.

Kipo:

I agree with you wholeheartedly. My introduction was uh through critical critical role, but specifically through DN Diesel, where it was Matt Mercer and Vin Diesel. Oh, I love that. And they did just a little one-shot, and that is just what's cemented in my brain. Um but as the years have gone on, I've just become a huge fan of Brennan Lee Mulligan and just the way he that he does things. But they're both great. Uh but if I had to pick one, I would pick Dimension 20.

Wylie:

Have you heard uh Critical Rolls um one-shot Crash Pandas?

Kipo:

Yes. No, yeah.

Wylie:

Oh, you gotta listen to Crash Pandas is fantastic. Anyone who's on a road trip, that's great. One shot to listen to. Crash Pandas is really, really, really funny. Um, and it's fun. I think Sam Regal DMs that one actually, and so you get to hear Matt Mercer actually playing as a player. And it's so fun to get him, to let him, you know, get that opportunity to be a player.

Kipo:

Yeah.

Wylie:

Um and there's lots of they do lots of great voices in there and stuff too. Um, so that's definitely a really fun one.

Mimir:

Kipo's already uh taking notes over here. And it's the session hasn't even started.

Wylie:

More things to listen to on the way home. Brad, you want to go next?

Brad:

Yeah, let's see. Again, I'm new to the world, so so there's that.

Wylie:

Um have you been listened to both or seen both?

Brad:

I so I've seen clips uh from Dimension 20, so and it looks hilarious, and it looks like it's really good. Uh so I definitely want to start listening to it. Um, so but what I've listened to majority-wise has been critical role. So I'd probably have to go critical role at the moment, mostly because that's what I've gotten into to start. So but yeah, for the for the moment I'll say critical role.

Wylie:

Yeah.

Brad:

Um, I definitely enjoy uh Matt Mercer's uh his NPCs are some of them are just crack me up and are hilarious. Specifically is uh I can't remember the the NPC's name, but it's the one where he basically does uh black powder. Yeah, and I was literally thinking about the same guy because people swing!

Mimir:

Yeah, he's like every time you see him, he's missing fingers. Oh, it's so good. Oh, it's brilliant. Yeah.

Brad:

So yeah, so that's I have to sit with critical role for the moment, yeah.

Wylie:

Yeah. I think critical role is really great when I haven't gotten to actually play in a long time, and I'm just really itching for that real sitting down at a table campaign experience because I think uh Critical Role is more traditional. Um so I definitely and they have so many great players, and Matt Mercer builds such a great world. So I really enjoy listening to it. But I think um, like, especially if I'm you know going around doing stuff, I think that Dimension 20 is just a little bit more playful um and not as strict to the rules, um, in in a way that makes sense, right? You gotta have the rules, you gotta follow the rules. But I think um Brennan Lee Mulligan's style of DMing um is very much a style that I want to emulate in my DMing and enjoy. But I love it when Dimension 20 and Critical Role get together because that's just like greatness upon greatness. Um and I I remember uh Brennan Lee Mulligan was DMing for Calamity, yeah, and um there was just these great moments that he painted. I think someone got a nat 20, I think um Travis got a Nat 20 trying to spot somebody who happened to be invisible. And the way that Brennan Lee Mulligan described that as you know the light reflecting off the back of that that little bit of iris that you still need to capture the light and be able to see, and it was just such a really good way of describing it, or as a character is walking through their home and and seeing the marks of like their their kids' fingerprints on the walls and and things like that, and it just really painted a really beautiful, emotional um and captivating picture while still you know following the rules of D & D and being really fun at the same time. So if I have to pick, I'm I'm picking Dimension 20, but they I'm really excited for this mashup that's coming for them in season four, too. So um, so what is everybody's favorite either character that they've ever played, which Brad does not have many. I think he's got one choose. One or um or your favorite class, or if you don't have a favorite class because you haven't played many, a class that you'd really like to play. So I'll go I'll go first with my favorite one. Um I got to play um, we were playing um Rime of the Frost Maiden, and I got to play a changeling rogue, and that was such a fun, fun character for that adventure. Rogues in general, I think, are just gonna be my favorite class, but also getting to be a changeling. Um we just had some really epic moments um of using that ability um to infiltrate places and stuff. And uh yeah, I just love I love some of the the tricks about a rogue. You have to really pay attention with a rogue, I think, to really take advantage of all the stuff that they can do, but that was a favorite for me.

Mimir:

Um yeah, I it's hard because I DM more than I play. Um and I love DMing. I love the story uh aspect of DMing. Um I I know my favorite like class is Bard, um, but I don't know if I have a I I I love, and this is maybe just pridefulness on on my my end, but I love um playing uh any of my characters. Like I have a character double double O Savon, who is a Bard that is like uh mobster, old man that's trying to retire but he can't because he you know all that jazz. Or I have like a paladin, which is high charisma, but he actually has a low charisma and he uses his wisdom instead of his charisma um as a spellcasting modifier. Um yeah, and they're like all those. I just love the story aspect of DD, and so I can play any character, um, and uh I love uh playing any kind of that. But yeah, I would say Bard is my uh I love the utility of Bard. I love being able to be like, alright, like I see a circumstance and I can do five different things and just make it happen and use something that's not uh normal or original and be like, oh, instead of I hit somebody, I can actually go and like make an illusion and then get advantage because they think there's two people uh attacking them, but they're not. So something like that. Yeah. Yeah, that's true.

Wylie:

Because Bard, you don't you're not straight combat. Yeah. You know, you can you can do combat, but you can also use your charisma. Yeah, and like you use utility, yeah.

Mimir:

And I think I think it's awesome to have those like story pools. So I always any class that I I ever play, any character I ever play is always has a negative stat. Um and so it's your guys' job to figure out where my negative stat is. Um in this character. Um but yeah, yeah. So every character has a negative stat in in my games. So yeah. Nice.

Kipo:

It is tough to pick after you've done so many characters. Uh my first thought was just, you know, your first character is always just close to your heart. Uh usually something that you've been uh holding on to for a while. And the fun part with mine, so uh Montel Dallas was his name.

Wylie:

That's such a good name.

Kipo:

It it really is. It's uh I don't know if he'll ever listen to this, but it was uh some dude that I uh s had in my English community uh college class, and his name was Oh, that was someone's real name. Montel Dallas, yeah. And and just this big uh black dude with dreads and wore the largest belt buckle I've ever seen uh on his jeans, and I I just thought he was such a character in that class, and that his name was so epic that I had to name my first DD character after him.

Wylie:

Um his parents knew what they were doing. They didn't like it. Yeah, no, no, they really did. They were locked up.

Kipo:

Shout out to Montel Dallas where wherever he is, I hope I hope he's doing well. But uh the fun part uh with that character is that I got to bring him back five years later after um after I had first played him and uh kind of got to level him up a bit and and just have another uh shot at playing with him. So that was that was really good. I I'm looking looking over at Mimir here because for one of his campaigns I had a barbarian orc um named Bonkin Thuck. Yeah. Bonkin and uh probably just another just he's just a big softie. That's all he is. He's just a big softie. Uh his wisdom and intelligence really aren't there, but he, you know, close to my heart, that guy.

Mimir:

Bonken be bonken.

Kipo:

Bonken be bonken. That's all he did. That's all he did.

unknown:

And he's good at it.

Mimir:

No joke, man. He's good at it.

Wylie:

Makes him pretty simple to play, huh? Sometimes it's nice not to have all the options, and you're like, literally, all I can do is hit the problems.

Kipo:

Very different.

Wylie:

Uh door won't open, hit it.

Kipo:

I'm excited to hear Brad's first character again. I just I love him so much.

unknown:

I love him so much.

Brad:

Uh so yeah, so for me, yeah, I've got so many to choose from. Um yeah, no, I'm just kidding. I've just got the one and only. Uh his name is Mobo Beans. Um, he's a bard. Um, but he's also a 400-year-old gnome uh who is three foot tall. And uh most of the weapons that he has are as tall, if not taller, than him. Um but yeah, he was kicked out of the house at like 350 years old from his mom, who's like, you need to do something with your life instead of just playing music at home. So come on, Mobo. So yeah. In this economy, maybe that's um yeah. So good old Mobo.

Wylie:

Can you uh say something to Mobo's voice?

Brad:

Hey, I'm Mobo B. I'd like to say it's just a great place. Uh I would like to adopt him, please. That'd be wonderful. Uh but he's he can be a little shady at times, but not not too shady. But uh, you know, he might steal like a paperweight off your desk or something like that. But uh for the most part, he's a lot of fun. Um but no, uh so yeah, with playing playing as a bard has been fun, kind of getting to do um, I don't know, you just kind of a jack of all trades, but not you because you can't come in too heavy with like like a barbarian or anything, but I I had to learn that at first when I first started playing, because I was like, just attack, and it was like, oh, I just took a lot of damage. Oh, it's a bad out here, yeah. I can't play this way. This is rough. And so then I learn like sit back, throw some spells, like, oh, okay, kind of that mid in in the middle, right?

unknown:

Yep.

Brad:

Um, but yeah, I I think um, I don't know. I honestly with any of the classes I'm excited to play. Um, just to try, you know, new characters and different uh Do you have a specific one that you want to be like?

Mimir:

I I can't wait to play this like this class.

Brad:

I will say I am excited to play Barbarian. Um just because uh sometimes in like video games and other games I've played, it's just that tank. Just tank. Just run in, throw something hard, you know. Like there I don't have to fear of getting hit as much. Bonking be bunkin'. Yeah. But um, I don't know. I'm also curious of doing something a little more on the magic side too, just very like I don't know, throwing a lot of spells. Kind of kind of almost like sniping for you know, like that's kind of like I'm I'm kind of curious about that too. So nice. Yeah.

Wylie:

Awesome. I appreciate you sharing some of MOBO. Yeah. Because I just met you for the first time back in whatever it was, March, April, when we started playing for the first time, and you know, sat down at the table, you know, getting to know each other at Kipo's house. And uh, you know, as soon as you started speaking in that Mobo character, I was like, oh Brad, I already had this idea for the podcast, and I was like, you're gonna be a good fit. I didn't even know your DD experience, but I was just like, a voice like that, a character like that, that this is gonna be a lot of fun. Um so that was super fun sitting down and playing for the first time and and uh getting to know Mobo. What a great little character. Um, I think we've all mentioned that we all have played video games. So I think for our last question today, um, let's talk about some of our favorite video games.

Kipo:

Yes. You can't we're gonna be here in another half hour talking about this.

Wylie:

You can only talk about three. Three max. Three max, and I'll I'll share some of mine uh first. I think uh one of my favorites that I enjoy for gameplay is Assassin's Creed. Um I I love the open I love the choice in that game, how you can be stealthy, you can be guns blazing. Um there's so many different options, and I love how they're based mostly off of real cities and real environments. Um so it can be really fun to explore um, you know, England in the industrial era and things like that. Um lots of fun, you know, gameplay in that. So I really, I really like Assassin's Creed. I think my very favorite video game, if I have to pick number one, I love The Last of Us for their storytelling. Um I like gameplays that again has has stealth. There's a lot of choices in your gameplay in that one as well. Um, but I really appreciate the storytelling, particularly in the first one, and how they use lots of little pieces of the environment to contribute to that story, the notes that you can find, the pictures you can see on the wall, um, the dialogue as the of the characters is there exploring and the actual character development. Um, I think that's something rare that we don't see in a lot of video games. And the whole progression, you know, of the story and even switching, oh, spoiler alert, if you haven't played, if you haven't played last of the game. I haven't been there. Have you gotten have you gotten through the first season?

Mimir:

No. I have so many other games that I've played.

Wylie:

It's not burned. So many games. Well, I think I won't spoil it. But um I think that they do some some really creative choices um to tell the story. Um and it's still good gameplay. So um, ooh, thats top two . Um okay, um, Honorable Mention, I love Horizon Zero Dawn, but I'm not gonna talk about that one too much, but that's fine. Um Baldur's Gate is obviously great, Baldur's Gate 3. Uh, but I actually really like a similar game that Larian came out with earlier. Um, they had a previous game that wasn't DD licensed, but they did Divinity Original Sin. And that one actually came out on consoles, which was really fun. I liked being able to play it with a handset. So um it's very D coded, but without the actual DD spells and stuff like that. Um so those um Baldur's Gate and Divinity Original Sin are pretty fun to play if you're if you're itching for some DD, but you don't have a group to get together with. So alright, I broke the rules, but I was fast about it. So I broke my own rules.

Mimir:

I have my three. I have my three, and I'm I'm good. I'm ready to go. Okay, yeah. Um so Mass Effect 2 is my favorite game of all time. Um and I love that. I love the Mass Effect series, I love everything about that game. Um, love the uh freedom of choice, things, all that jazz. Um I've played professional video games. I played Call of Duty and uh Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, and Monofort 2 all professionally, but I currently play Rainbow Six Siege professionally and coach a team, college team, um for that. Um and then my third one is Halo 2 Campaign, which is it's so interesting because I'm a multiplayer, I love playing like multiplayer games, but um the uh like my top two are single player games. Uh except I guess technically um Halo 2 is a multiplayer game, but I played it for hours. I like grinded that game, legendary, lasso, all that jazz. So yeah, love that. So that's easy, quick, and that's my my stuff.

Kipo:

I already love how diverse the video games are.

Wylie:

We're gonna have to do a whole episode where we just talk about video games. Yeah, we'll have a gamer corner at some point.

Brad:

Alright, I'll I'll I'll jump into mine. So I'll keep it old school real quick with a couple. Number one, in 64, there's a game called Wave Race, uh, where you race jet skis. I have it. Yes, absolute favorite. Like always randomly just hear the theme song in the back of my head. Just playing on the loop.

Wylie:

How can you not have fun with that game?

Brad:

So good. That's like a family one, like my dad's really into it, and so that was like a as a family, that was like our thing we always did. Uh, and then of course the other one ha has to be mentioned is any of the Mario Kart's absolute favorites. Yeah. Uh from there, trying to get into a little bit newer games. Uh you know, I think I think I'm just gonna run with uh Legends of Zelda, Breath of the Wild. I'm currently working through, although I know this is super late compared to everybody that's probably already finished it, but I'm currently working through Tears of the Kingdom. Nice. But I've never played a Zelda game. Oh, they're fun.

unknown:

Never. I enjoy the soundtrack too. Yeah, yeah. The soundtrack is great. I listen to it, but I don't play the game. I haven't played it. I don't I have too many games to play.

Wylie:

So you prefer Breath of the Wild over Tears of the Kingdom so far. So far?

Brad:

Maybe. Maybe. I don't know. There are some fun things that they added into it. The building feature in uh Tears of the Kingdom is a lot of fun. So I am enjoying that. Just slowly figuring things out as we play. So it's good. But I mean, I think it's because I finished Breath of the Wild and like went through it. It was just like, that was so much fun. So yeah. And I've not fully gotten through Tears of the Kingdom yet. So we'll see. But it's I mean, they're very similar though, too. So yeah.

Kipo:

I'm a bit more mainstream. I've never played just about any game that most of you already said. Except for Brad. Uh I played Mario Kart and Zelda. Um But kind of starting the same place is my favorite like game that I think of that's super fun multiplayer with all my friends at home growing up was called Battle Tanks Global Assault. Oh, I've played that on N64. Uh graphics are N64, but it is so fun. Uh just a great multiplayer game. Great for its year, for the for its time. Um and then moving up, kind of chronologically, I'm gonna I have to put it at a tie for both one player and multiplayer. So big Nintendo person. Uh Mario Sunshine was the first one player game that I got to play on GameCube. And soundtrack, everything, mechanics, love it. Still play that today. Um it's really good. Yeah. Um and then with that multiplayer, Mario Super Strikers is the best game of all time, in my opinion. That's crazy for multiplayer. I know it's crazy take, but it has been endless fun for for years. My my last one, and this is my favorite game of all time, it is newer, it is Red Dead Redemption 2. Wow. Uh, if you can make me cry while I'm playing a video game, then you get a lot of credit. Um it has a really good story? It is. Oh, yeah. Yep. Yeah, I can't say enough good things about that game. Uh, just the detail that is in it and everything. So I've not played that game.

Wylie:

I haven't had time for it yet, but I do want to.

Kipo:

Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2. So good. There you go. That's it. Awesome. Yep.

Wylie:

Sounds good. Well, I think we're gonna stop this recording and get on with actually playing some DD today. Um, so this is our first recording of Behind the Blunders. I don't know, we don't have a name for this yet.
