We are back from holidays and lots has happened, we talk about the recent trades and contracts that have been signed. Football is discussed and Pete has a meltdown over players penalty techniques, as well as the performance of his baseball team. And finally we head into the last two weeks of the UFL season, Kerry has to dig deep into his pockets to buy his Dallas Renegades shirt

SPEAKER_04Over to you, Pete. Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, and welcome to episode 27 of the Mostly Football Show. It's another OG episode with myself and Matt, both fresh faced and back from long holidays or partial holidays, in someone's case. Matt, how you been?
SPEAKER_00Really good, thanks, mate. Good to be back. Nice to see you. Um you're clearly a happy camper wearing your Cambridge United garb.
SPEAKER_04Oh yes. Yes. And obviously uh the same for you wearing your Aston Villa garb, although they did let the whole side down by losing to Tottenham. But I think we've already gone over that.
SPEAKER_00Well it's good that it's good that the winner, the foot, the football winners are on the call, and um Mr. Butler noticeable in his absence again.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, look, uh he's he's called off, and I I think I know why. Uh and so we'll we'll touch on that briefly before we go around the grounds on the NFL because there's a lot of news to get through. Um let's just start with a quick UFL update. The season is over, they're heading into the playoffs. Um the Birmingham Stallions uh failed to fire and finished mid-table five and five, did not make the playoffs, but the breaking news is the Dallas Renegades sat alone in last place with a three and seven record. Ironically, two of the two of those wins were against the Battlehawks. However, that that's all by the by. Mr. Butler, put your hand in your pocket and buy that shirt. I think we'll give you a two-month deadline to be sitting here on camera wearing a Dallas Renegades playing shirt.
SPEAKER_00And I think he needs to wear it at the Super Bowl party next year as well, Pete. To be fair, there are way too many silly Dallas Cowboys jerseys in our party at that event. So it'll be good to see him wearing a Dallas Renegades jersey instead of that Tony Romo jumper that he's been wearing for the five years.
SPEAKER_04So um Well, you you obviously didn't pay attention this year because he was wearing a one dollar Micah Parsons.
SPEAKER_00I was I was kind of snowblind. There was too many white jerseys with blue stars in, so it all melded into one horrible mushy vision for me.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Yes. So so we will track through the next two weeks of the UFL um just to see who does come out on top. Um semi-finals of are um Orlando against the Kings and Louisville Vatical Hawks against the DC Defenders. So we'll just see uh how we come up with those. But uh yes, definitely uh Mr. Butler, hand in the pocket shirt needs to be purchased. Right, let's move on to the NFL. Uh old man Rogers is coming back for one final hurrah. Of course he is. A 25 million single season contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Good news, bad news, expected news.
SPEAKER_00Oh, look, expected. Um, you know, I I didn't. I think I think we're at a juncture P where it was highly unlikely that there was going to be any outcome other than this one. The Steelers were stuck with him. All the other teams in the league had already, you know, made their plans and were set fair. Um, you know, barring some weird, you know, weird last-minute Atlanta Falcons move. I think we joked about that when McCund was on. And um, you know, with McCartney going to the Steelers, I I think, you know, what's he got to lose, really, Aaron? You know, 25 million, you know, one more sucker the South. I'm not in the slightest bit surprised. Whether it's a good move, I don't know. I think I said, you know, in one of our earlier episodes, I think the art of of really being a legend in the game is knowing when to to quit. I think that time was not last season, it was probably the end of the season before. So I've got mixed views on that. But um, yeah, I think unsurprising from from my standpoint. What about you?
SPEAKER_04Uh well, uh I'm not surprised to see it. I do think if Pittsburgh had not made the playoffs, uh that might have persuaded him not to come back for another year. But I I think as soon as the coach turned up, um, I think there was a massive amount of pressure for them to try and sign him for one more year. Uh, 25 million at 43 for a whole season long, uh probably on a par with what Tom Brady was being paid or or there or thereabouts. Uh you know, he's obviously needs it in his back pocket for some way, shape, or form. But it could be interesting. Um they made some good moves in the off-season, Pittsburgh. We'll we'll see how they go. But I think uh one last hurrah, uh one last shot at the playoffs, and and we'll see where we go. But if they can't get him any pass protection, it's gonna be a long old season.
SPEAKER_00I suspect I know somebody who's probably sitting on the sidelines smiling wryly, and that would be one Mr. Matthew Stafford looking down the um into his crystal ball and thinking, oh 43, 25 million, maybe I keep on sticking around. But yeah, look, that's just speculation on my behalf. I think, you know, he's he's a giant in the game. Let's hope he, you know, his um his standards don't drop and he's able to produce this season because we clearly want to see the best players performing at the best of their ability. But 43 is getting rather old.
SPEAKER_04Yes, yes. Uh uh 43 with a decent pass protection is probably manageable. 43 without any pass protection is gonna be a long old season. But as you say, we're a hundred days away from the first game, so let's get the countdown clocks on and and start uh start limbering up for the long season ahead. Uh speaking of which we will touch at some point in the next few weeks on everybody's well, mostly Green Bay's, Chicago's and Dallas's fixtures. They are out now. Uh and we'll we'll take an in-depth look at uh what they probably mean uh in the next few weeks. Still more news to get through though, and and and bringing it back to the Rams. Uh big move just today. Uh very thank you, very thank you very much to the Rams for doing this before we record it tonight. Um big move for Mars Garrett. So a couple of questions for you, Matt. Um, is smart move for the Rams, uh giving up a lot a lot for him, and what the hell is going on in Cleveland?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, look, uh, I mean I think when you you know, this is this is a complete blockbuster. So, you know, Mars Garrett, two-time defensive player of the year, that probably doesn't come any, you know, any bigger. Um, there are not many bigger players in the game than him, um, certainly outside of the quarterback position. So I think once you kind of sift through the wreckage of this, in many respects, I think this makes sense for both teams. And I'll I'll go on to explain why, but let's let's just pull all the deal apart. So Miles Garrett, 30 years old, he's gone to the Rams for Jared Verse, who's a very, very good player in his own right. I think he's been to two Pro Bowls in his first two seasons in the league. He was defensive rookie in the of the year in his rookie season. So Jared Verse, a 2027 first, a 2028 second, and a 2029 third. Now, there was some speculation. Obviously, we've talked in previous episodes that Garrett had asked for a trade. There was some speculation that the Browns would move him at the end of last season. They didn't. They gave him a big contract. Um, um, they modified his contract and upped his money and deferred $29 million of bonuses that were due in September of this year over the next three years. And I think that's the sort of that's been the trigger really for the Rams to act now when they did. Having said all of that, um the Browns will still carry a heap of dead money over the next two seasons. 15.53 million of dead money in 2026, 25.56 mil of dead money in 2027. Let's have a look at it from the Browns side. So look, Rams side, we've I think we've been saying they're a complete and utter powerhouse. Oh. I think their window is so far open, it's not even funny. You know, Stafford's on an expiring contract. They've just traded up, uh, traded with New England a few weeks ago for the all-pro corner. You know, this makes an enormous amount of sense. And I was kind of thinking, gosh, you know, if I was an LA Rams supporter, I would be delighted that they're going for it to this level. You know, they've gone right to the top of the pile and they picked the best defensive player available to them. In terms of the Browns, you know, really this is a case of what Miles Garrett wanted and the Browns' timeline just didn't match up. You know, the Browns are a million miles away from winning anything. You know, Miles Garrett wanted a win now. And the athletic wrote an unbelievably insightful story around the impact. So despite the fact that we've talked about Garrett being, you know, a massive player in the game, the impact of defensive ends versus the impact of quarterbacks is unbelievably different. So the Browns have only won eight games in the last two years, and we were talking about Miles Garrett, he had five sacks in the game against New England. The Browns still lost that game by 19 points. Player near and dear to your heart, Mika Parsons. The Cowboys were seven and ten in games with him in his last season with them, and they were seven, nine-one without him last season. So I'm, you know, my thinking here is the Browns and Garrett's timelines didn't match up. The Browns have accumulated another first-round pick. Now that'll probably be very late in the draft given how strong the Rams are likely to be, but it's it's another asset. And next year's quarterback draft is much, much deeper than this year. And I suspect we'll see the Browns give Deshaun Watson one more chance to claim the starting job. And if they don't like what they see, and let's be honest, you know, he's been injured. There have been allegations, and he's been a you know, $230 million disappointment, if we're completely honest. I think the Browns will start packaging picks up and move up significantly to try to find their face of the franchise for the future. They're about to move into a new stadium, I think, at the end of the um decade. You know, Miles Garrett was the face of the franchise, but you know, just talking about the difference that defensive end the impact that they have on the game versus quarterbacks, the Browns have got to solve their quarterback problem. So they've traded away their best player, but I think what they're doing is positioning themselves to take a serious run of what they believe will be their franchise quarterback in next year's draft.
SPEAKER_04You're saying Shadur Sanders is no longer the face of the franchise.
SPEAKER_00In the OTAs, I read um in the in the Browns' um optional uh workouts, um Deshaun Watson's been working with the with the starting offense, and Sanders has been coming in for secondary reps. So it looks as though, without saying anything, the Browns uh moving Deshaun back into pole position to start next season.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and given his contract, right, you've got to. You've got to you've got to see if it's there because if they have to trade him or move him on, uh like you say, and and then go to another young quarterback coming out of the next year's draft, th th they've got to put him in the shop window. And people have got to see how good he is or how good he can be, but with his background of injuries Yeah, it's gonna it's gonna take a a desperate franchise, maybe the Jets, that someone might take a chance on him rather than someone younger, but yeah, you know, who knows? Um I just found it uh I I mean you know how I feel about teams from LA um that just want to buy their way to success um and just spend ridiculously large amounts of money. So when no one's talked about the cap, what does it look like with Miles Garrett with the cap at LA? So I'd be very interested to see what that looks like. I mean it's it's a smart move for them. Absolutely smart move for them. Their pass rush will be absolutely fearsome. Um next year, the question is can they get over the Yips uh and and go to the next level? This has to put them as as possible Super Bowl favourites next year.
SPEAKER_00I think I saw the odds they're eight dollar favourite um and Seahawks at $8.50. And then I think the next two teams hold on to your hat, mate, are the Ravens and the Bills in the uh Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I think they're they're ten and eleven dollars a piece. So even worse, what I looked at was the Kansas City Chiefs. Um they were the fourth or fifth favourites. Uh and uh what's changed? Nothing I yes, they've in in improved the running back and they've they've added a couple of people, but what has changed from last year? Not much. So uh it it's interesting. I mean, I guess it's the market because you know, favourites to win the NFC North. Detroit.
SPEAKER_00I think they've got a last place schedule, though Pete.
SPEAKER_04Th they do, yes, but they still have to play Chicago twice, Green Bay twice, and Minnesota twice. So the last place schedule doesn't really ha you know come into effect. And that's the problem with the NFC North. And always has been when all those teams are playing well, um you've got six tough games a season, whereas anybody else finishing bottom, you know, will will get an even eas easier schedule. So but it is what it is. I I still think, you know, realistically, it's it's probably gonna be a uh Green Bay Chicago fight it out one next year. Or hopefully, anyway.
SPEAKER_00And you've got to you've got to imagine, Pete, that you know, once the NFC North teams have beaten one another black and blue, the NFC is gonna run through Seattle and and L. Uh uh. And uh, you know, I I get your point about you know, LA teams, but this is a trade. LA have given up a lot. It's not that they just spend money in free agency.
SPEAKER_04No, that's that is that is true. They have given up a lot.
SPEAKER_00They've given up, you know, first, the second, and a third. They've kind of mortgaged the future. And as I said, Jared Verse is a heck of a football player. So, you know, I think there's value in this, you know, there's I I completely see why the respective franchises have done what they've done. But as I said, you know, if I take a step to one side and I'm objective about this, and I take, you know, my bears fan hat off and I temporarily put an LA Rams hat on, I'm like, well, I I my franchise is going for it, and I'm here every second of the way.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well, take your LA hat off and put on your Cleveland Browns hat on. If you're a Cleveland Browns fan, what are you feeling right now? Well, look because for years you've been hearing we're rebuilding, we're rebuilding, we're rebuilding. Well, I and I think that's And we're here again, right?
SPEAKER_00Well, I think that's the crux of it, Pete. You know, I think this is this is the biggest step in, you know, in rebuilding um that franchise. You know, I I I think they need a quarterback. You know, they need a face of the franchise given where they are and the you know, this new stadium that's come in. They needed to do something different. They haven't been winning with Miles Garrett. Um they've got an enormous cachet of draft picks over over the next two to three years. And what I think they're actually doing is saying to their fan base, our time isn't now. We knew that, you know, it's very obvious it hasn't been now or the past four, five, six, seven seasons. But I think this is a definitive move to say, okay, we've we've cashed in our biggest chip and we're going to maximize it. I think they've been flirting around the edges. You know, they had an opportunity to move miles last season, didn't. They've been trying to, you know, retool rather than rebuild. And I think this is the Browns saying we are rebuilding. Now, I also read a very interesting article about their general manager who's presided over quite arguably the worst signing in their history, 230 million on to Sean Watson, and has just traded away arguably the greatest player in Cleveland Browns' history. We can debate that. You know, Ozzy Newsom, OJ Simpson, whatever, whatever. Did OJ play for the Browns or was that the Bills? Anyway, there's been some mighty fine old players that have played for them over the years. Um, but that you know, he he this is a general manager who's blown a massive wadge of cash on a broken quarterback with a very, very chequered personality history, and he's now just traded away his the you know the greatest player, certainly in the modern era of the Cleveland Browns. Now, any one of those two things would get a general manager in the NFL sacked, and he's done both of them.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Let's see what happens there. Now, I I'm less concerned, and I I think it's it's less interesting about what the Browns will do in terms of rebuilding. I'm now more interested in who they are going to trust to um own and manage that rebuild. Is it going to be the same person who's just made these two enormous moves? We could argue the merits of you know the the the Garrett trade, but it's more the timing of it. Uh I mean last season is just a massively lost season for them. They messed around with Shador, they were useless again, you know. They could have tried they they could have started this rebuild a year earlier.
SPEAKER_04Uh oh yeah, absolutely. Uh and it kind of they could have even uh cut their losses a little bit this year uh and stuck with Miles because their defence was never a problem and maybe gone for a Kirk Cousins or something like that just to fill the gap. Because now what they've got is a season of inexperienced quarterbacks. Uh I'm sure they'll beat the Packers, they generally do when we play them, because uh you know we we kind of drop down to their level. However, you know, uh I I would be so despondent as a Cleveland fan now, seven seasons of rebuild and and we're going back, you know what, guys, it's time to reset again. So you've got to stop drafting rookie quarterbacks and start thinking about logging some experience in there. I mean uh I guess we'll find out, you know, with how Michael Penix does with that Kirk Cousins to nurse made him along now and then we'll see how you know the Raiders do with Kirk Cousins working with Hernandez. Uh i it's it's gonna be interesting because I think that's the way to go. That may be even what uh Pittsburgh should be looking at. I mean the Rams have certainly done it by drafting that young quarterback to to play uh um back up to Stafford. Right? But uh and you know, as as with most of these trades, uh and as Green Bay found out last year, you're an ACL away from losing a boatload of money on a very good player. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00And we've got to we've got to remember, Pete, it's not just Michael Penix of the Falcons. They've got Tua as well this season.
SPEAKER_04Uh they do, yes. Yes. Well, yes. Yes, they do. Yeah. Very good. Very good. I had forgotten that. Um and and that's probably because you tend to forget Tua. He's uh uh uh not not not the world's greatest. Anyway, let's uh let's move on from that and then talk about the other team who uh have gone from a position of strength to strengthen themselves and to put together the long-running soap opera of AJ Brown and the Philadelphia Eagles. Yeah. He is finally, it looks like he's being traded to the Patriots.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and as well. Yeah, I think we kind of called this one, you know, a month or so ago, the first of June would be, you know, would be the the the date in question for this. So I think that you know, this is finalization of probably one of the worst kept secrets in modern NFL history. So AJ Brown to the Patriots for a 2028 first and a 2027 fifth. Um let's just have a look at the Patriots for starters. You know, they signed you one of your players. Uh Romeo Dobbs, yeah. Yeah. Um so the building, you know, they're giving um Drake May some weapons. We know that they've got a holy offensive line. I think they went out and signed a um uh uh a prominent free agent guard to begin to do a makeover of that. But you know, certainly Drake May's now got some some weapons. The interesting thing about AJ Brown is you know, he's getting older. Um his average yards per catch have been going backwards quite significantly over the last sort of um period of time. Last year he caught 78 catches for 12.9 average yards. That's the lowest of his career. Um, having said that, he's reunited with Mike Rabel, who he worked with um very successfully at the Tyson, uh the Titans, but I think the Ryan's been on the wall here. I mean, we saw back in January he had a very, very um demonstrative um sideline spat with um head coach Siriani. He did, yes. You know, AJ's been, you know, kind of edging himself towards the the uh the trapdoor there, I think, for a while. So yeah, look again, big weapon for um for for New England. I again take my hat off. I've I'm a Patriots fan, they ain't missing around. I don't know if they're addressing all of their needs, but they're certainly making a splash. And they're a stronger team in my mind than they were last season when they made it to the Super Bowl. So that was going to be interesting to watch as well.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I think I made the bowl call uh uh uh a few episodes back that they won't even make the playoffs this year, um uh based on the easy schedule they'd had this year. So uh I may have to backtrack on that major claim, uh given that their investment in two really strong, good wide receivers. But I I think for me it will be Ken Drake may actually back up with another stellar performance this season. Uh so we'll we'll wait wait and see on that one. But at least uh Eagles fans will be happy that Brown's moved on, or they'll be furious that uh he's been moved on. But the at least either way, the saga comes to an end. Um and and speaking of sagas, uh uh Green Bay are are uh about to hit one with uh Josh Jacobs, so he's been allegedly a bit of a naughty boy. So uh five charges against him. Nothing has yet been formally filed, so we have to be clear on that. But battery, disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property, intimidation of a victim, and felony strangulation slash slash suffocation allegations. Now, his legal team are uh saying that there's nothing in this. Um they've denied the allegations and they are going to uh display evidence that uh will um exonerate him. However, he currently sits with these over his head. So what does that mean? Well, even if these are charges are reduced or dropped, the NFL can still investigate under the league's personal conduct policy, and there is a real risk of suspension there. Um you look at what the the breadth of depth of Green Bay's running backs, you've got Chris Brooks, who's okay, Michal Lloyd and Pierre Strong Jr. Um none of them have really set the world alight. And the basis to Jordan Love being able to hit the targets of Christian Watson and a et al. in the wide receivers, Matthew Golden is establishing a running game which Josh Jacobs is very good at. So what does this mean? Well, we're kind of wait and see. Um because i you know, i i it's uh it's gonna be up to the the judicial system and then up to um the NFL about whether they want to take things uh further. So yeah, as Packers fans, we're probably all um hoping it's not true, um condemning him if it is, and then um seeing where we move from here. But I imagine there's a few uh scouts running around and making a few phone calls to see what running backs may be available for a trade in the course of the next uh 100 days.
SPEAKER_00Correct me if I'm wrong, Pete, but this feels most ungreen bay-like. I can't I can't think off the top of my head about too many non-playing sagas that have been attached to the patterns. It does it, you know, there are franchises that regularly, you know, seem to attract negative publicity for the off-field exploits of their players. This just doesn't sound very green base. So um, yeah, look, uh, I think you're right, double-edged sword, you know, there's the there's the you know, the legal and um you know the legal implications, and then obviously there's a there's sort of double jeopardy there because the NFL might step in. And I I believe there's a precedent for the NFL stepping in and taking action against players in the past. So um, yeah, watch this space as a as a Bears fan, great news, because I I really do highly regard him. Um he, as you say, been a fundamental part of all things good on the pitch for Green Bay um over the last uh few seasons. So um yeah, I think this one's gonna hurt your team, mate.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, look, I I think so. But but ultimately, if if if found guilty and and uh proven on those charges, and again they are alleged charges at the minute, then you know that's something we're gonna have to wear. It it like you say, it's not it's um very un-Green Bay. Like I I can't remember anything. In fact, the only thing I can ever remember in in my history of following Green Bay was way back in the eighties. Um and I don't even know if you remember this, but uh one of our uh defensive tackles um made the latest of late hits on McMahon.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I do, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And when he came off the pitch, he was discovered to have a hit list of all the quarterbacks that he was going to late hit written on his uh on his uh wristband or something, and McMahon was top of it. So that's the only thing I can remember that's that's uh that's sullied the Green Bay name. Uh let's think of something a little bit more pleasant, or maybe not pleasant uh for you, but pleasant for me. We talked about new stadiums with Cleveland. Uh everything coming down the wire today, and Adam Schefter on ESPN is reporting that the Bears are likely to be leaving and moving to a new stadium other than Soldier Field. So we are one step closer to the Gary Bears. Yeah, look. Uh what's your thoughts on all of this? It seems to be a bit of a debacle, uh admin nightmare.
SPEAKER_00Look, we heard from Maddie in Chicago last week, and I I should I did get Matt's permission to disclose this. So um Matt does a lot of work personally for Kevin Warren, um, and obviously Kevin Kevin Warren is the CEO of the Bears, and um um is the man who's effectively uh entirely in charge of the process of finding uh um the new stadium. Now, I I think it's a no-brainer that the the horses bowled, which you know, Soldier Field's just not an option, the Bears don't own it. Um and you know, that's probably the reason why you know they went and bought the land at Arlington Heights. What has happened is so the the Illinois Senate passed a bill in the final hours of the spring session, um that um, however, the Municipal Stadium Authority Act stalled inside the House of Representatives, and that's left the Bears without legislation to launch the stadium project in Ill Illinois. Um so rather than the politicians' vote on that bill, um which legislators did craft at the 11th hour very late on Sunday, um, the House adjourned and barring a special session over the summer, um, state legislature will not return to session until November. So I'm not sure whether this is just a timing thing. And the implication there is that both Chairman George McCaskey and Kevin Warren um went on the record in March to say that their goal, uh the singular goal was to have a stadium site selected by late spring or summer. So um as Maddie pointed out when I interviewed him last week, this is a very, very, very complicated process. Um and it was just not discussed before um the House of Representatives um broke for you know their summer. Um so look, I don't know if it's dead, I don't know if it's I hope it's delayed, um, but it's certainly more unnecessary drama in the whole, um, you know, the whole affair. So um the Bears paid 197.2 million for Landa Arlington um high uh heights um back in February 2023. But the team's major misstep at the time was entering into that purchase agreement without getting clarity on all the funding obstacles, all the government hurdles, um, and the particularly around the property tax situation. So that seems to be at the center of um, you know, this whole affair is the property tax certainty, um, and then passing this meg mega project bill. So very, very complicated. I'm hoping it's a delay. Um, I still would be utterly aghast if the bears were allowed to leave Illinois. Um and I'm very confident that we still don't need to be having conversations about the Gary or the Hammond Bears.
SPEAKER_04Well, we'll see. They will forever be the Gary Bears until such time.

SPEAKER_04Hmm that's that's a really good question. Uh I because I know there's a lot of uh because I watch Parks and Wreck a lot. There's a lot of people that that came out of there. Um I put you out of your misery.
SPEAKER_00Is it Janet Jackson? Very clever. Well, yes, she the Jacksons, Michael Jackson is from Gary Um, Indiana. So um yeah, you did well there, mate.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I was running through Greg Evergun and a few other the uh there's an episode of Parks and Wreck and the Nerdy Sides coming at me where they where they do a uh a mural or or propose a mural of all the famous people from Indiana in in to Christ's Last Supper. And Greg Evergun is in there, um Michael Jackson is in there, uh Janet Jackson, etcetera, etc. So um I I erred on the side of caution and went for Janet rather than than Michael. So very good. Um one more thing for us to cover in the NFL before we move on, and it's back to the future, as they say. Uh uh O DJ has signed for the Giants on a one-year deal.
SPEAKER_00He has signed a one-year deal. Um he um yeah, he the the man is back. Um, so um somebody for Jackson Dart, um Trump supporter um and uh Trump rally host to um to throw the ball to. So uh let's see how that all works out.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's uh and that's been a really interesting story as well. I've never uh seen anything quite the like where someone's had to apologize to his teammates for something they believed in. Um and like it or not, right, uh it's just another reason to hate the Giants. Um but, you know, he he stuck by his convictions and and now he has to deal with the consequences of doing it. Of course, um, you know, he has also been uh told by by the president, or the president did say that he, you know, was the the greatest quarterback ever and all that stuff, and if how come he if he is, how come he isn't, and all of that good stuff. So yeah, interesting times. Uh it'll be interesting to see how well received he is in other stadiums uh going forward, because there is uh uh no love lost between the NFL and uh Donald Trump.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and just to just to put some colour around that, it was Jalen Carter, um Jackson Dart's teammate, who I think he tweeted, or did he put an Instagram post out saying, you know, what the heck, man, or some, you know, come on, man, or something like that. So there's a little bit of internal uh angst there. Yeah, just on um more broadly, um the president um in early May um uh criticized the NFL um, particularly around the cost of uh of watching games. He said the cost of watching the NFL is ruining the sports. And as a consequence of that, um the Commissioner Roger Goodell um is now has now been asked to testify um to Congress on June 10th um about the Sports Broadcasting Act, which was written in 1961. So essentially, Pedness all surrounds growing concerns over the number of companies to which broadcast rights are sold. Now, clearly back in 1961, cable and streaming didn't exist. Yeah um, you know, a quick off the top of my head um Liszt CBS, Fox, MBC, ESPN, ABC, Netflix, Prime Video, and YouTube all now have um rights to broadcast um NFL games. And the Athletic um did a study on the cost of watching major games, you know, big games and holiday games last season was over 600 US dollars. So this is going to be an interesting one to see. Um I'm very uh intrigued to hear what the Commissioner has to say when he stands up in front of Congress on June 10th. But uh again, as you say, um that sort of presidential NFL um back and forth is um alive and kicking um as we speak.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, if I was him, I'd be uh just marching in there with FIFA's World Cup prices and saying, What the hell are you even talking about, guys? Um because uh uh I I don't know if it's whilst you were away, but uh there is a you know, the t the FIFA resale site came up for a reselling of tickets. Uh tier one ticket to the final came up at one point one million dollars.
SPEAKER_00Yes. A single ticket. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04It is. Uh and mysteriously, and I'm uh again, I'm not saying there's any subterfuge in uh in FIFA, but mysteriously a number of the unsold tickets that were advertised disappeared off their site today um just moments after Donald Trump claimed the whole event was sold out and it will be the most successful World Cup and best World Cup ever. So um it won't be simply because of where it's being held. It will be a nightmare. Anyway, uh that's uh that's the view of me, not necessarily the view of the mostly football show. I should clear that one up, right? So we'll we'll see how that all goes, and we'll do um because it kicks off in about uh two weeks. So we probably next week we'll do a bit of a look into um England's ridiculous choices of Ivan Tony and and Jordan Henderson, and is Tuchel a sleeper agent? Look out look forward to that uh that discussion next week.

SPEAKER_04Well well Dan Byrne I can all next week. Dan Byrne I could almost expect, right? Uh and uh because he's been floating in around, but Ivan Tony playing Mickey Mouse soccer. I don't care if he scored 25 goals in 23 games, you could score 25 goals in 23 games over in that bloody league.

SPEAKER_00Yes, they have, and what a time to be an Aston Villa fan. Look, it was awful the the game I went to, just my luck. Um, but um they certainly um regained my love. Uh you know, great result against Liverpool. Second half, Liverpool were terrible in in that game, and I'm I'm not at all surprised that they've made the coaching change that they have. That's a spectacular fall from Grace for Arnest Lot, but I believe really?
SPEAKER_04I mean they they've still finished Champions League. Um, you know, but it's it's it's not it's not like they're they're they were setting the world alight, but it's not like anyone has set the world alight. So I I I think it's a particularly hard anyway, let's get back to Villa, but yeah, I think it might be a bit of a harsh firing.
SPEAKER_00Look, I think a lot of Liverpool fans had come to the end of their tether, and all I'm really speaking on is two two points of reference. My stepbrother and nephew um massive Liverpool fans, and they've been very unhappy with slot this season. And secondly, you know, me watching the Villa play them, you know, the week before last, um they were terrible second half. The body language of their players, you know, they they had very they had 11 very talented players out on the pitch, but they were 11 individuals. There was just no cohesion, there was no teamwork, there was no fight, there was no gumption, and they literally rolled over in that game. I mean, we beat them 4-2, I think they scored a goal late, and we were easily good value for that. Um, you know, Liverpool teams don't get thumped, you know, heavily in, you know, in games at the point of the end of the season. So there's definitely something wrong. And you know, if if if we're again objective and balanced about if you go back to really what I think the pivot, there were a couple of pivot points they spent an awful lot of money on Isaac. Did they really need him? And then slot spectacularly and very publicly fell out with Mo Salah, and everything slid from that point onwards. So um, you know, the conduct of the Liverpool players was was poor. Um, you know, they just weren't a team. So look, 4-2, we'll take that over a you know top six side energy of the week. Unfortunately, I was on a plane flying between Chicago and LA when the final was on, couldn't drop into in-flight Wi-Fi. I knew I wouldn't be able to stream it, but I just wanted to see if I could get text updates. Four hours into my flight, which was, you know, two hours after the game finished, obviously dropped in, my phone blew up, you know, lots of congratulatory messages. So I knew before I'd seen the result that we'd won. Um, but what a great performance. I mean, Friedberg didn't seem to really be up to much chop, but um, the goals that we scored were spectacular, and I think we played the game in the right way. You know, we didn't try and look after it, we still kept we were progressive, and I was super proud of that. And then to round things off, we spoiled Pep's going away party a little bit with three points at the Etihad last weekend. But look, you know, if you if you think where we were under CVG, um, you know, we got to the semi-finals of the Conference League two years ago, quarterfinal of the Champions League, we won the Europa League this year and finished top four. And teams that, you know, go far in European competitions generally don't finish in the top four. And when you consider our net spend last year, because the PSR was 28 million, Emery is doing a heck of a job. Um, now I could argue the toss that you know some of the players that he signed haven't really worked out and actually signed a lot of players and then let them go. Danielle Marlins had an unbelievable season at Roma. Um, it looks like Gesson isn't going to be picked up by Crystal Palace, where he's been on loan. Sounds as though Andreas Garcia's going out the out the door. So, you know, a little bit of a checked history. Harvey Elliott didn't work out. So he's really working with a bunch of players that were signed by previous managers, but what a job he's doing. And I am incredibly proud of my club, I must admit, watched some highlights, I have shed a tear. What a time to be a villa fan.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. Look, you know, I boldly predicted he'd leave the end of this year, and I and I still think if if you hadn't won the the or qualified for Champions League in some way, shape or form, he would be looking to uh feather his nest somewhere else because he is uh he is a good coach. Um he's a specific type of coach. Um you could argue he's uh a villa coach, if you like, having taken Villa Real and now Aston Villa to uh Anseville. Anseville to uh to the same uh trophy, uh the the uh whatever it is, not the Conference League, the Europa League. Um leagues going on. Yeah. It's it's it's a hell of an achievement. Um and you kind of look at next year and go, well, how do you replicate that? Uh well and with the best will in the world. I mean, I think Yeah, Villa aren't gonna win the Champions League, so their their route back into it becomes more of gotta finish top five, but playing in the Champions League Finishing top five, like you say, that's a hell of a hell of a task for anyone with that level of budget.
SPEAKER_00So yes, it's some jeopardy to it, Pete. And you make a very good point there. It will be challenging for us, particularly with the financial constraints that we're under, and you know, the fact that he's clearly going to have to strengthen and deepen the squad. So, you know, I think part of what keeps him going is the challenge. And um, you know, we've been you know, we've been considering the downside of the constraints that he's been acting under. But I think really what Emory is pro he's always been recognised as a very good coach. I'm delighted that he's come back to England. I think he had a bit of a rough arsenal. I'm delighted he's come back and proven people wrong. But what he's actually showing us is he's a very, very, you know, I wouldn't swap him for anyone. I honestly wouldn't. But I, you know, I would say he's one of the top five coaches in the world. But what he's also showing us, given the, you know, the the control that he has at Villa, is he's a very smart administrator. He is making things work in very, very difficult circumstances. And I just wondered, um, Pete, you know, great for him to have picked up the fifth um Europa League um title, but I'm just wondering how much he's enjoying showing people what a good all-rounder he is and how he's proving people um wrong and enhancing his reputation both on and off the pitch as uh an owner of football operations, an administrator, and clearly a superlative tactician.
SPEAKER_04Yep. Yep. I I g uh there's nothing I can say that will uh that to counter that. He's he's clearly a very good manager and very misplaced at Arsenal. Well I mean he was one of the guys that followed Arsen Wenger, and that was always gonna be hugely difficult to follow. Always gonna be a a problem, as David Moyes and others have found out at Manchester United. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00We should quickly talk uh while we mention Arsen Wenger and Unay, we should quic quickly talk about Arsenal and the Champions League final. Did you watch the game, mate?
SPEAKER_04Uh uh fortunately I missed it, um, which which is good. Uh uh again, it's uh I don't think anyone set the world a light. I did watch the highlights. Um disappointed in in the way Arsenal approached their penalties, the two guys who missed. Um I don't understand, and and you know, you and I have played football to a level. Um I uh clearly not that level. But just run up and hit the fucking thing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's not.
SPEAKER_04What's all the pissing about for? You're put you're putting more pressure on yourself by dicking around than you are by just going up and hitting him. If you someone strides up to him and wellies it over the bar, well that's that's it. When someone dances around and takes five little steps and then hosses it over the bar, yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's we've we've been seeing it coming in more and more, and I think there's an awful lot of you know, penalty kicks is fifty percent about technique and fifty percent about mental application. You know, players go through a process, they practice these things. If they feel it works, what are they gonna do out on the pitch? But um, yeah, I thought I'd got Sam Allardyce on the uh podcast then for a minute, Pete. You were you're you know or or are you Neil Warnock in disguise?
SPEAKER_04Well maybe I I I just the penalties are hard enough to take, right? And there's enough jeopardy in it that that you know you you can miss one. But genuinely speaking, if you walk up and leather the ball as hard as possible, the keeper's gonna find it hard to save it. When you muck around and sit and wait and dance and stare in the eyes and go, well, you know, well, I'm gonna wait for you to move before I kick it in.
SPEAKER_00You know, they're waiting for the keep it to show up and I'll know, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So uh well, let's stay on soccer and and because one of the things that came out from the Champions League final was Arsenal's time wasting coming back to bite them on the ass. Um they are gonna cut down on that uh in the in the upcoming World Cup. So for substitutions, players will now have ten seconds to leave the field and must use the nearest touchline. This could result in a delay of up to a minute of their other substitute or the substitute himself being allowed on. Um so they'll be temporarily down to ten men. There'll be a restart countdown for throw-ins, goal kicks, and other restarts. Um any delays can result in a turnover of possession or corners being awarded to the opposition. Um VAR will have more power. Um VAR can now intervene on mistaken identity, incorrect second yellow cards, because obviously VAR cannot intervene on a yellow card now. Wrongly awarded corners, um, and fouls before set pieces come active. This will obviously reduce some some obvious errors, but uh I'm not a fan of the VAR thing now, because we're gonna end up with games lasting 120 minutes. It's gonna be hard enough in the heat and the breaks are gonna have to take, but if VAR is gonna be looking at every bloody corner that might be contentious, we could be here for a very, very long time.
SPEAKER_00So um Yeah, look, I mean the games changing. Um you know, in theory I applaud some of those things because I think, you know, one of the less appealing things for me as the game has evolved is gamesmanship, time wasting you know, um tactical you know, the tactical acceptance of a yellow card. And then, you know, and four I love Emmy, but you know, if he didn't play for the villa, I I wouldn't be able to stand him. He's one of the worst in a number of these things. So it you know, it has become part and parcel of the game, and it's uh it's unappealing. And you know, in practice I I applaud some of these endeavours. It'll be uh sorry, in theory, uh it'll be interesting to see how they all shake out in practice. But um but this is gonna be a very different World Cup for myriad of reasons for many, many reasons, yes. So so honestly had have no idea how far away from it I'm distinctly disinterested in it. I'm sure I'll get more interested in it as we uh get closer. But it yeah, it just feels it just feels the game that I, you know, is that you and I were bored up playing. The last World Cup that I think was a proper World Cup was 1982, Pete. And I'm 12 years old, and the Brazilian team was the greatest football team I've ever seen that hasn't hasn't won a major trophy. But yeah, look, I mean, uh as I said, I'm sure I'll I'll start to you know um get more of an appetite for it when things kick off. But at the moment, it just feels like you know, World Cups for over three countries, really.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you know.
SPEAKER_00So if I say to you, uh you know, 48 teams or how you know, come on, it you know, what are we doing here, guys? Clearly, we're just trying to make as much money as we possibly can out of the rank and file fan. It's not good enough. Um and yeah, this has got every possibility of being a massive damp squeep.
SPEAKER_04Yep. Feels like I poked the Gary Bear a little bit there. So uh so so very good. If I said to you this time more than any other time, uh would you get the reference?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we're gonna find a way.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, very good. So um touching on what you said about Emmy Martinez, goalkeepers who have a tactical injury, um, players will not be allowed to go to the sideline while the goalkeeper is treated to get any instructions from their coaches. That's a new one. Um players covering their mouths in any altercations will be given a red card. Um and uh players receiving injury teet treatment must stay off the field for at least one minute before returning. So if you're gonna uh throw uh uh an injury in the 88th minute, you're gonna have your team down to ten men uh for at least a minute. So it'll be interesting to see how on earth they can police that, because the fourth official's gonna probably need about 15 stopwatches to uh to get through it all. Anyway, it all starts in a couple of weeks, and I'm sure like you I'll be a bit more excited and have a wall chart of some sort, but right now um I'm I'm as indifferent as you are about it, and probably not as impassioned as the speech you just gave. So let me become more impassioned and let's move on to baseball. Because while Chicago lost their lucky mascot when you left the country and went on a 10-game losing streak, um the Giants have just been atrocious this year. Uh and I I well, as we speak, despite putting 19 runs on Colorado, they still lost the series 2-1 to potentially the worst team in baseball. They rocked up the Milwaukee today after scoring 19 runs and promptly conceded 16, seven of which came in the second innings. Um they've called up a player from AA, the Flying Squirrels, um, to come and join the team. Uh there's a lot of reek of desperation. Traded the best catcher by far and away in terms of catching to the Cleveland Guardians for uh you know, a couple of other things and a a bit of bobs here and there. Um, you know, the writing was probably on the wall for for Patrick Bailey. I I love him, he's a clutch player. And I you know what I think about clutch players, trading them is is not always the best thing, but he was not producing the kind of batting that we need him to. Um Buster Posey, first year is proper GM, is looking out of his depth. Tony Vitello as coach watching the game today, way, way out of his depth. He's burned a couple of pitches today that he didn't need to do. Um you know it's it's a hard season. Especially when you look at the the the Giants have the toughest June schedule in all of M MLB. They're 13 games under 500 already. Um Rafi Devers has started firing. Adamas has started to get start hitting the ball and fielding. Chapman's defensive duties are uh top-notch still. They're just not getting it on offense. There's some bright sparks with Bryce Eldridge, but their starting rotation when Logan Webb's taken out on the injured list, which is is again quite damning. Um Robbie Ray is having a shocker of a season. Atlanta Broops had a shocker today. Trevor McDonald's been a bright spot when called up, but you know, and their bullpen has has materialized into what we all thought it was, which is very weak. No strengthening done in the off season. Um the first game against Colorado four days ago, they gave up five in the ninth innings to to get walked off. You know, it it's just hard to look at this and go, Yeah, I feel for you why can't we put a ten-game winning streak together? We've got the badders, we've got the offense, but the defense and everything else is just not working out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you're fifteen games behind the Dodgers and challenging the Rockies and the Angels and the Tigers for last place.
SPEAKER_04You know, I I guess. Not the Chiefs, uh the Royals. So the Royals are pretty crap as well this year. Yeah. Despite having Bobby Whipp Jr. Yeah uh lot lining it up. But yes.
SPEAKER_00Um Yeah, look, I mean, I guess, you know, at least you know at least you've got a good idea of what you are. Um, you know, it it feels as though this is a season where you're gonna be sellers of the trade deadline, you potentially Well th so so let yeah, let's I I've got to get passionate about this.
SPEAKER_04That's what everyone says. Well, let's offload some contracts. But why? I mean, both uh Adama's uh as far as I'm aware, Adama's Devas and and Chapman all have NTCs. So who's gonna want them with some of the way they're playing at the minute? And everyone says we've got to lose the contract, we've got to do this, we've got to do that, we've got to rebuild. But why? They are very good players. They're starting to demonstrate they're very good players. Young Hu Lee, um uh Louis Arrias is one they're saying to get rid of. He's only on a one-year contract, so you'd think about it, but he's the got the second highest batting average in all of baseball at the minute. We should be that's to me, we should be looking at this and going, well, all right, this might be an anomaly this year. You know, everyone started slowly. Um everyone's saying, well, you know, it's the coach's first season and we should give him a break, but yeah, he he looks out of his depth. Now, if you're gonna change things, why not l why not look there? You know, uh you know, we we probably will sell i if the guys on the NTCs are prepared to go. But then what does that mean for next year? Are you writing off next season already?
SPEAKER_00Well, I I mean I think uh by accident you've stumbled upon quite an anomaly in you know, so normally yes, what happens next season is a very fair question, but I think you know we've seen in American pro sports when there's a lockout is actually quite a pivotal point. Um so you know, let's make an assumption that there's either not much of next season or not a next season at all. Um you you know, you've an opportunity to retool, you potentially have an opportunity to rebuild if you know if some of those players are on expiring contracts or you know, are on contracts that wind down to a you know to one year left because you're burning a year um, you know, because of the strike. So look, um very hard. I'd hate to be in your position, mate. You you're a good team that's uh playing badly. Um it's it's oftentimes difficult to put a finger on, you know, why that is is the case. But um at the same time, you know, I'm sure the brass, uh the Giants will be you know working overtime to think about what does this mean for the rest of the year, what does it mean for next season if it's an abridged season or the season afterwards if next season spheres into thin air, and how potentially, you know, you guys as a team bottoming out this year can take advantage of you know an unnatural break in in the normal order of things.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, uh you you're way more optimistic. I mean it's it's hard, my my ever optimistic attitude still still says there's a hundred and three games left in the season. If we win 70 of them and uh lose 30, then you know we'd probably be knocking on the door of um a playoff contender.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but who's gonna be hard to see when you're looking for seven people that's not that's not something the teams do, right?
SPEAKER_04No, it it's hard to see where where we would get our next um well well, uh any kind of streak going. And we've got three more games against the Brewers this week before we go out to Chicago to take on your boys. I think um we did beat the White Sox in a series two to one, but we're the not to be sniffed at, 'cause they're playing well. They're playing well, but we're the only team this year who hasn't swept a series. Um so it just goes to show we we just can't string games together. So uh and when we do have a fifteen hit night, the next night we have two. Yeah. So but we've got to look for the positives. Zhang Hu Lee and and uh Lewis Arise's batting is great. I think in sh in Colorado, uh Jianghu Lee came off the injured list, he hit eleven of fifteen, um which is just phenomenal work. Um but if you watch the Milwaukee today, they're not big hitters. They they don't aspire to be big hitters, they just put the ball in play and and run you run you into the ground. So um let's see how well they do. Um although I I suspect you'd would you want them to you kind of want the Giants to step up for the next three games and and and beat them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, look, I mean it it's a tough old season, isn't it? And you know, I I kind of half joked, you know, at least you know what your team is. I mean, it's it's almost impossible to work out what the Cubs are. You know, they've had two two ten-game winning streaks before June, which is historical, and then a ten-game losing streak, and then you know, the bats are on fire two nights ago against the Cardinals, and then they're the same old rubbish um you know, last night against them. So two ten-game win streaks, ten-game lose streak. We haven't we haven't won a series in May. The last actually, I tell a lie, the last series we won was the card uh the Reds series, and that was when I first arrived in Chicago, you know, on the 4th of May. So they've lost the series to the White Sox, to the Brewers, to the Texans.
SPEAKER_04Um and and all that time PCA regained his crown as big as prick in baseball as well. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh well he he did uh he did to the tarts off crew in in St. Louis the other night. But uh yeah, you know, the it yeah, I mean I'm not feeling the same pain as as you are, P, but you know, Dansby Swanson's banner 183. What's that what's going on there? You know Ian Happ's banner two thirty, Michael Bush at two forty-three. But but you're winning games. The Giants We're fourth in the division, Pete. Yeah, we've gone from being about four games out in front to fourth in division, five and a half games back from the Brewers. But you're still four.
SPEAKER_04Four games above five hundred, right? Which is so you're in contention, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. We're in I think we're in very close to or in one of the last world card spots. So uh but yeah, we've got the A's series kicking off tomorrow, and then we've got you boys uh following that. If if you know if we're coughing up coughing up those series to to the athletics and to to the Giants, I think it's um it you know the team that we thought we were in those two ten-game win streaks is probably in the rear view mirror, and we're much more the team that's been struggling through a ten-game losing streak and then win one, lose two through the month of May.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Yeah, well, um let's check back in, but uh with the NFL season only a hundred days away now, I I'm starting to look more forward to that than I am watching a hundred games of PSP. I'll keep over the course of the next uh I'll keep you focused on mate.

It's this is the opportunity to trade him up. Um get himself a few draft picks, get themselves a few um decent players. And uh uh but who's who's gonna be willing to trade? What who's gonna be willing to give anything?
SPEAKER_00Well, um athletic produce an article, guess who the number one favourite be the Dodgers.
SPEAKER_04Correct. Yeah, but they're gonna have to give something up for him, right?
SPEAKER_00Oh yes. I mean everybody's gonna have to give a lot up for him. But yeah, um Dodgers are the favourites to win the Scubles Sweepstage, Tampa Bay Rays in number two. Uh Cubby's at number three. I mean, it you know, it's the worst kept secret in baseball. Uh we need pitching help, and you know, this guy's as good as it gets, but we'd probably have to give up a lot, you know. Um definitely match or probably Kevin O'Contera, probably Jackson Wiggins. Um yeah, if if not if not more. Yankees Yankees are fourth favourites, Padres fifth.
