I'm Mike, joined as always by Charlie and Justin, and tonight we bring you another horror movie draft, and this time we're focusing on the year that Charlie graduated high school, 1987. We briefly covered this year in an early episode we did where we covered some horror movies from the years that we all graduated high school. I was 02. What was yours, Justin? 99 and Charlie for 87. And we realized during that one that 87 was a pretty awesome year for horror movies. Would you agree? Yeah, I'd agree.

87 was a year that I feel like was almost the end of the golden age of the slasher. We we did have a big slasher in this year that is still held in high regard with some fans. But by this point, we're up to like, I don't know, Friday the 13th, 6 or 7. I think 7, then we're, or no, it's six, I think. We're up to the Halloweens are up to like number four or five by now. So, you know, some of these are just a little bit like we're getting into that part of the 90s where digital, you know, digital effects are starting to take over in some of these movies, and it's there's there's a changing of the guard almost. But they're like chopping mall digital effects, they're not like, yeah.

But so I feel like there it's it's definitely like a transition kind of year, the late 80s going into the 90s. There's definitely a a change coming in a couple of years, and it starts slowly creeping in around here. But Charlie, your thoughts on 1987. It probably means the most to you.

We lost. Yeah. So 87 horror movies. We talked a little bit about some of the years that we do, we always pick three, but one of the years we've done we picked four because there were some good ones. Are we gonna pick three or are we gonna pick four for 1987? I feel a lot more comfortable with nine with three each. Because I was six years old.

I mean, Arnold, maybe my favorite actor of all time, just because of all the movies he's done. I mean, Predator and the Terminators, all just so good. And I just love everything that he does. And I just love his I love his whole story. Just the the pumping iron documentary, even before he was an actor. Like I just love that as a documentary. It's so fucking good. Just his whole story and his whole life, and just everything's just kind of awesome about him. And I mean, this is a movie, like it's just big dudes in the jungle having to fight a bigger dude. It's crazy. A dude playing a dude. I mean, you got Apollo Creed in this, uh, Carl Weathers, Jesse the Body Ventura. You got sexual tyrannosaurus. Yeah. I mean, you got him carrying around painless, just mowing down the jungle with a goblin gun. It's funny. There's some good jokes in there that thankfully Atticus isn't here to repeat. But yeah, that turned a couple people off that we know. A little bit. I thought it was funny. It was just a callback to a joke in the show. But dude, Predator's so fucking good. And anyone that's like it's not a horror movie, it's an action movie. Bro, there is gore. There is a dude hunting you in the woods, which that's freaking horror. People getting hunted in the woods. I mean, shit. Yeah, just because these are bodybuilding, muscle-bound dudes, you know, doesn't make it not horror. Yeah, their spines ripped out, their skulls, there's head exploding into the camera lens. It's it's fucking good. Predator, I love predator. Number one pick with a book. I think you should marry it. I'm I might.

So like I'm not saying it's not in the category, but I often forget what I'm thinking of it, right? It's a it's a group movie, it's a elite team, it's an action movie, but you're right. That's it's a slasher film in its own way. If he was using those just the claws that he had, it would be a slasher. Right.

Dude, that was what turned me on about it was seeing this box at the video store, and you turn it around, and the picture on the back is this is Arnold face to face with the Predator, and the dude is taller than Arnold by a foot. And it's like, holy shit, nobody's bigger than Arnold, and this guy is, which is why like I had to see it when I saw that box. And it's it's just a great movie. And and the more I learn about it and like read about this movie, and like just the shit that went on on set, like the the weightlifting competitions they would have and the fucking with each other, the ball busting, it's like it was a it was a horrible shoot. Like everyone got sick and everyone got diarrhea from dirty water and like raw food and stuff, but like the way they would just fuck with each other like the Oregon Trailer. Daddy dysentery. Yep. So yeah, Predator, number one. Charlie, you're on the clock.

Oh, yeah. But I mean I like the first one better. I know a lot of people probably disagree with that because the second one was shot much better, with you know, better actors, better acting. A little bit better script, maybe. I would say the first one was better. I mean, it's it's got everything. It's got budgets. It's got decapitations. Cutting off limbs. Cutting off your own hands. Stabbing your own hands. Your own hand coming back to try to kill you. And coming goddamn really close to pulling it off. And then with the ending, the ending just you know nails it. No step, no stumble, 10-10 performance, and just sets up the sequel so perfectly.

Yeah. It's a tour de force solo performance by Bruce Campbell most of the way. And it's athletic filmmaking by Sam Raimi. It's it's just it's amazing what they were able to do on such a small budget in basically one location for the whole time for 90% of the movie. Just so good. And and just the effect, the practical effects of it all, a little bit of comedy in there. I mean, it's just it's so good. It's just so, so good. We just talked about it a bunch on the pod, but yeah, so good.

I mean, I'm gonna echo what you guys said. It's it's it's obviously seemed like a fun shoot. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell knew each other from back when they realized that Bruce Campbell had something about him in the first one, and they said, you know what, let's let's turn this up to an 11. Let's turn Bruce up to an 11. And then Arm in Darkness, they turn him up to like a 15. But it was great. So they had they had to walk a tightrope of making a sequel, but still acknowledging and catching up the audience, you know, from what happened in the first, but they had to retell it because you know they didn't own the rights, which you'll learn about in our episode that we did, which might have come out by now. I'm not sure.

We're gonna go a little wider than we are deep on Freddie just terrorizing the same people over and over. It's like, okay, you can do extra things in your dreams. He can do it, you can do it too. And Nancy comes in, teaches a new crop of kids how to like avoid Freddie, beat him in his own game. I mean, spoiler alert, it doesn't work for most of them. But she still tries. She still tries to educate them. Heather Langenkamp back, obviously, Robert England back. Wes Craven did this one. Pretty sure he did, didn't he? He did three rent.

It's gonna be Clive Barker's Hellraiser. I obviously liked it enough to do the podcast. You guys remember I was a little disappointed by it not living up to the fondness that it held in my heart. But still, when I think of all the pieces to it, no pun intended, because there were a lot of pieces in this movie, but it was gooey. It was gross, setting was disgusting. They started they started sketching out a fantastical different dimension realm with these creatures that are amazingly designed. The centibytes are have a great design to them. The box, the Hellraiser Lament box, or whatever it's called, is still something where it's like, I think I'd fall for that trap, man. I'd be like messing with that box and I'd be in there. I think it should have a warning label on it, though. I think it'd be have a warning label. Like, and see in the first movie though, it seemed way too easy to open that box. We talked about this. Yes, they shook it like just like an etch a sketch, and they'd open up. I'm like, what the hell?

I have the same feeling about it. It it just did not have lived up to what the memory of it was. But I've seen it much more recently than I guess you had, because it it has slowly deteriorated over time.

So I I do want to say that I think the movie worked the best for me because the age I was at, I couldn't have been more than 10 when I saw this, maybe 11. And it was just like there were so many things being thrown at me that were like taboo, right? The the sexual stuff to it, the even the even the idea of sleeping with your husband's brother, whatever, this is all like, how could they, you know, in my mind, but it doesn't hit the same as an adult. Unfortunately.

Really great makeup on the Centibytes, really good makeup on Frank as he goes through the stages of like coming back to life. The gore, the chains that pull him apart at the end. Love that scene. I still don't know what Jesus wept means, why he says that right before they kill him, but but yeah, it was it was it's if you like gore, you like gross stuff, it was good. There's a lot of gross stuff.

So after Prince of Darkness, the next one on my list is Angel Heart, which is Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro. Robert De Niro plays Lou Cypher, very clever, Lucifer. And Mickey Rourke plays Detective or like a gumshoe detective Harry Angel. So there you go. I don't know where they came up with these names. Somebody else is called like you know Clubfoot or something. That's not right, but Cloven Foot. Well, I think the musician, the musician that goes missing, his name is Johnny Favorite. Like, I don't know where they came up with these fucking names, but anyway, right? It's like a copy Niro playing Lucy Lucifer hires Detective Angel to find his missing musician, Johnny Favorite, to track him down, and everywhere, everywhere Mickey Rourke goes, he in the interviews, they are defensive, they're aggressive, and then they turn up dead throughout the process. And so it's it's it's just a really good like thriller detective flick, and there's also some gore involved. There's some you know raining blood at one point that was pretty controversial in one of the scenes here, but yeah, Angel Heart. Not much else to say about it. You guys like Angel Heart? It's another one that's yeah.

Created this film, and it is not the best film. It's not great by any means, but it is gross, it's gory, there's some crazy like practical effects. Not Sam Raimi good practical effects, but still like you they're going for it with the you know, the title bad taste, so you can get it, you know. But you can also see where even on this small, small budget and shooting in this place, like you can tell that there's something there that Peter Jackson's got a vision that he can do, that he he will try to do bigger things. And weren't like just something small that that I remember sticking out to me was like a scene where one of the guys they do like all the characters do a ton of running in this movie, they're always like running away, right? Gotta run. And they they show a guy like running towards the camera and he ducks behind like a shed, and then the camera pans up from the shed, and you get a view of like a vast view of like the coastline and the water and like a mountain in the background. It's like, wow, that is some like you know, Spielberg level, like showing you the world, like real quick for this really shitty low budget movie. So it's like you could tell there was something there, and obviously Peter Jackson turned into something, but it did a couple. I love I love gross out stuff. This is in the gross out category, so yeah, bad taste. That'll be my final pick.
