SPEAKER_02

Coming up next, I can't think of another film that made people absolutely terrified to go into the water. Can you? I mean, maybe one and piranha, maybe. Nope. Just this one. Like no other film. What's that one with LL Cool J? Yeah, that one. The goat. Not even a film that came out five years before this. I can't think of another film that made people never terrified to go in the water. Well, this is the most believable thing that could happen when you go in the water, too. Right. Definitely. How about if I I can't think of another film about Native Americans trying to protect their land along the shoreline from an incoming corporation while sea monsters murder and rape the town's people and dogs? Is that better? Did you say rape the dogs?

SPEAKER_01

Kill the people. Isn't that a movie? Remember when we raped the horses and run out of town on the people?

SPEAKER_02

Anyway, three amigos. All guts so gory presents 1980s Humanoids from the Deep.

SPEAKER_04

Humanoids from the deep. They're not human, but they hunt human women. For killing.

SPEAKER_02

And for Justin, this was a first watch. So right out of the gate, I'm going to start with you. What did you like about Humanoids from the Deep? And why is it now on your Mount Rush Gore of Horror Films? Next to PC. That was a little bit of a trick to say it's on there. It is not on there. Alright. So this is obviously not, I'm not going to say garbage. It's it's it was a fun watch from a you know, harken back to, you know, yesteryear, right? A long time ago, where exploitation ruled and you could get away with still rules. It rules. You could get away with four sets of boobs for, you know, and not necessary. I would say not necessary. I mean, I'm not but relevant to the story, so I'm not an editor or anything, so I wouldn't recommend they cut them because you know you don't want to mess with the craft. But yeah, it was 80 minutes long, it was very little drag to it. So I mean, I'm glad you recommended it because you know I get to see what's it's like an insight into Mike's mind when he makes these things. And you you said before we came on the pod that you wanted to see another 20 or 30 minutes of that it was not long enough for you. I feel like there was more to do with some of the full frontals, right? Always right. Maybe a little close-up on the uh on the sexual assaults from the from the green monsters. That's a hot take. Oh, it was it was what we call in the biz sarcasm. Okay, I didn't need that. You know it. Sure. Stop looking at me like that. Charlie, 1980s horror flicks. That is your wheelhouse. Yeah. You said you saw this one in the theater, right? I did. I did see this one in the theater.

SPEAKER_01

With your mom. It may have been with my mom. I'm sure it was very uncomfortable for both of us for a couple scenes. But I did see this one in the theater. I don't remember. You know, I was I was 11 years old. It was a long time ago. Sometimes I can remember like the first two that I saw at the drive-in theater. I remember where we were when we saw it. This one I don't remember. I know where I was living at the time, but I don't remember the going in and watching it. Well, I mean, I remember going in and watching it in a theater, but I don't remember exactly you know the circumstances and who was there and blah, blah, blah. But yeah, I like this movie. And when it started coming, it was a B movie. I think that's the word you were searching for, where it was still good, is there something? Is there something that's after the B movie on the real Martyrs is a C movie?

unknown

Oh, come on.

SPEAKER_02

You guys keep going to that well, man. You guys love it. It's a deep well. It's a de well. No, Martyrs had some art to it. Shit. So did this. So did Humanoids from the D. So was my butthole. Wow, the burber. That's where martyrs is. So I wanted to know. Like, I thought it was just me that had a seduction ventriloquist dummy. Apparently, they had one in this movie, too. Like they had everything in body. There was a lot in this movie.

SPEAKER_01

I'll say though going out early with this, my biggest problem was they broke the cardinal rule of a monster movie. You don't show the monster in full light. They were real good with this monster. I mean, whoever put this together, I mean, it was even in full light, it was gooey, slimy. I didn't see any seams or anything like that. But come on, guys. Full light.

SPEAKER_02

I just watched an interview with Roger Corman. Well, it was like a three-minute one. Don't I don't want you to think I was doing too much homework on this, but he basically hinted at what Mike was about to say. They they held off. They did hold off and make you, other than the arms and show the hand in the made you kind of put it together. But the movie's so short, if the monster's visible for 40 minutes, that's more than half of the movie, right?

SPEAKER_01

Five minutes of combined, two one minute of combined monster. Yeah. I like the monsters. They would have been the much scary fight scenario if it was darker.

SPEAKER_02

Well, that's probably part of the budget constraints that they had because you know Corman makes these low budget films, and this one is low budget, but he likes it to feel like a big budget film. So they had like one one of the humanoids was a full suit that somebody was in. And other suits they had like partial like partial suits for like two other ones. So they could never show more than three humanoids at a time because that's all they had the money for to build. And then some of the ones had like longer arms than others. That was like tougher to maneuver, but then it was like in some scenes you'd see like just from the waist up because they didn't have the bottom done or something. Like because they were fully wrecked, and you couldn't show that back then. Oh my god. Sorry, were no inappropriate.

SPEAKER_01

I think they could have used uh the extra 20 minutes to build like some kind of lore of the island, something where you know this happens every so many years, and the Native Americans they had Native Americans, they could have made that too. But in the story, like it just it just didn't.

SPEAKER_02

So even three minutes three minutes of more exposition on what the experiments were and stuff. Three minutes would have been nice. Yeah, but the acting.

SPEAKER_01

I'm a professional scientist, trust me. She sucks not an amateur, not no, not a semi-pro. Yeah, not a semi-pro.

SPEAKER_02

She's a professional bullshit artist, is what Susan was in this movie. But we're gonna get into a lot of that. I wanted to go back real quick since Charlie saw this in the theater. I want to hit on what was in the theater. This came out May 16th, 1980. If you went to the movie theater the weekend before Humanoids from the Deep came out, you got to see the opening weekend of Friday the 13th. If you went the weekend after Humanoids of the Deep came out, you went to the opening weekend of The Empire Strikes Back. Wow. If you went to the if you the same weekend, if you didn't like Empire Strikes Back, if you're like I'm definitely into horror, I'm not into Star Wars, you went and saw The Shining. Right. So you're talking about four all-time great movies to pick from. What did you just say? If you went to the movie theater on like on like Memorial Day weekend, you had your choice of four would-be all-time great films. Yeah. Including humanoids, is that he said including yeah, he's counting humanoids. Empire Shrikes Back, The Shining, Friday 13th, Humanoids from the Deep. For the record. Yeah. You I mean, is there a better time to go to the movies, guys? Not in that type four week. I mean, stiff period. Yeah. I mean, obsession, backrooms, okay. Friday the 13th, Empire, Shining, and Humanoids are like, hold my beer. Hold it. I don't know. Did you go see any of those other ones in the theater? Or were you like, I'm gonna see humanoids?

SPEAKER_01

I saw Empire Strikes Back in Memphis at a drive-in with my dad, my uncle, and my brother. Did not see Shining when it came out, and did not see what was the other one? Friday the 13th. Friday the 13th when it came out of the theater. Too scary.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was probably too much for my mom. The humanoids from the deep. All good. Yeah. That's funny. I feel like this is the one you would see at a drive-in, not Empire Strikes Back. Yeah, I don't know. This, yeah, as a second part. Yeah, as the B. The universe, man. Yeah. So let's start with let's start with talking about Roger Corman real quick. New World Pictures. This is a new world picture. He takes a lot of pride, like I said, making low budget films, making them feel bigger. We're gonna talk about a lot of the scenes and some of the stuff and some of the techniques they use to make this feel like a bigger budget flick than what they had the budget for, especially probably the most explosive Molotov cocktail we've ever seen in a movie. Don't you mean Fangoria Hall of Fame, Robert Garmin? He is the Fangoria Hall of Fame. I mean Lifetime Achievement Award winner in like every award show, every award contest. He's a lifetime achievement award winner. Like and he's he he's been directing and making movies since the 50s, recently passed away, I think in 2024, worked all the way up through 2024, never retired. And he he's been an inspiration to a lot of filmmakers. He a lot of people got their start in a Roger Corman film. I mean, if I read out the names, it's ridiculous. It is directors such as Jonathan Demi, Francis Ford Coppola, James Cameron, Ron Howard, Joe Dante, Martin Scorsese, actors such as Robert De Niro, Charles Bronson, Jack Nicholson, Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Talia Shire, Diane Ladd, Sandra Bullock, all got their start in a Roger Corman film. You know, and some of them, like Jonathan Demi, put Roger Corman in their movies. Roger Corman's in Silence of the Lambs as the FBI director uh for a short scene. George A. Romero is also in that as a cameo appearance in the background. But so he he shows up in like Apollo 13, he shows up in Scream 3. Corman produced 489 films, directed 56 films. He's just he's a legend, even though a lot of his stuff is B movie, exploitation, schlock. It's where a lot of people start until they get, you know, nowadays you would just start on YouTube, it sounds like, but back in the back in the day, this is how you'd have to get started. I would have tried to make 10 more movies, even 500, you know. That's my own. 489 in 70 years was not enough. Has anybody seen Piranic Piranaconda?

SPEAKER_01

No, no, no.

SPEAKER_02

And and Charlie knows about camel spiders. They did a TV movie called Camel Spiders. Exactly.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think I saw it, but and I never saw one when I was in the desert. Are you serious? I'm serious. Never saw one. Thankfully, never saw it.

SPEAKER_02

Are you really there? So, one of the controversial things about this film, it was originally titled Beneath the Darkness. Okay. The main cast thought they were making a psychological thriller. They knew about the creature feature aspect of it. Roger Corman hired Barbara Peters to be the director of this and told her two things. She said, I want the creatures to murder the men and rape the women. And he said when he got the cut back of the film, that she got the first part great and basically omitted the second part. Why would he get that? I mean he wasn't happy about that, hired a second unit director, had a second unit crew, and they made more scenes that had all of the nudity and all of the sexual assault and had all of more violence, more gore, and you know, spliced these things into the original movie. So Cynthia Weintraub, who plays Carol in this, who's Jim's wife, you know, didn't know that this was the film they were making. Ann Turkle, who plays Susan, didn't know that this was the film that they were making. They were shocked when they saw the final cut and saw all the sex involved. Weintraub even said that they asked her if she would in the scene towards the end when she goes to get in the shower, they asked her if she would be nude for the shower scene. She said, No, I don't do nudity. They didn't pressure her. They were like, No problem. Like, yeah. So they got like, you know, after they were done filming that, they had a double do like a shower scene. Oh, okay. And it's noticeably, and even she said, like, it's noticeably clear that the double they used has like a much larger rack than her. I didn't notice anything. So it's like almost comically bigger. Kind of is like how she put it. And so she was shocked to see that when she saw the final cut of the film. So they took a they took and made like a lot of stuff that the cat original that the casting crew like didn't know they were gonna do, and they put it in the final cut with this like second unit director, second unit's kind of a shitty thing to do. Oh, it's awful, yeah. It is because you're consenting to be on a certain type of movie, you know, and your name and reputation's gonna be but right, yeah. So yeah, so Barbara Peters wanted her name like taken off of this, was like, This is not my final cut, and apparently has since come around on the film. But there's also been it sounds like interviews where or at conventions where people ask about it, and she's like, I don't talk about that, or whatever. So, you know, it depends on what side of the you know, whose story you want to believe and whose story you want to go with, but definitely very controversial in in that regard. Roger Corman puts a lot of social commentary into his films. Did that work for you here, or is the exploitation so much that like the social commentary gets lost in the mix? All I noticed really was like the environmental stuff and the you know, obviously the America's history with the Native Americans and things like that. Was there other shows?

SPEAKER_01

No, no, I was just gonna say that that was the time. I mean, like we do a lot of stuff now, like everyone puts stuff in the movies now. That's that's fine, and I understand that. And it's time whatever's timely when you're making the movie. And but I feel like the the environmental thing's fine, right? Whatever, nuclear and it's not new, it's still been going on the whole time. But the whole Native American thing was was at the time it seemed woke. At the time it seemed like the right thing to do. But but but by 1980, I mean there were a lot a lot of movies throughout the 70s that kind of did that thing where they included or focused on a Native American, like the Prophecy with um I can't remember. Chris for Walken? No, no, no, not that one. Uh Prophecy, where there's like this logging company in Washington or Oregon, and there's a fight between the Native Americans, the the they have a reservation, and then the logging company, which is about in this movie is about the same time, but uh it it's uh it does that thing where it's like the noble savage, which is like the exact opposite met like you want to portray Native American, you want to portray everybody who they are and the way they are. Like when you you know, back in the 40s and 50s, they took a bunch of white people and you know darkened their skin and they were the Native Americans, they didn't even use Native Americans. Uh this guy, I don't know if he's Native American or not. Johnny Eagle? But it wouldn't they like surprise me if he wasn't? He was on the ATM in Chip, supposedly. Anthony Pena. But it's kind of like Pena sounds it's not Native American. But it could be, you know, it could be, you don't know, but um it's unnoble. But at this point, it just seemed like they had gone with the whole full-on noble savage thing, like Native Americans don't have their own problems, and it's an unrealistic portrayal, and it's kind of counterproductive.

SPEAKER_02

Well, they got enough problems without the white man's problem, that's what they're trying to say.

SPEAKER_01

You know, I get that. And you know, it does have a message, and the message is good, and then but the portrayal is where the issue is.

SPEAKER_02

If they made this again today, it would also you know focus on that GMO stuff, too, like genetic genetically modified things, I'm sure.

SPEAKER_01

Like in the how bad they're but the Native American portrayal would be realistic, it would be Native Americans playing those those roles, and it just is what it is. It's a good movie, it doesn't go too far. It doesn't go too far with the the rape and sexual assault and all that kind of stuff. Not easy, but every cool it does not it did not ate well.

SPEAKER_02

Didn't you say this is on your Mount Rushmore of sexual assault movies? Almost I spit on your grief. That's I spit on your grief. Yeah. There you go. That's the fourth one. So this movie took a little bit of inspiration from Jaws, obviously. A little bit of inspiration from Aliens when they get to the end, swamp thing, creature from the Black Lagoon, all that kind of stuff. The tagline here, they're not human, but they hunt human women, not for killing, for mating. They do other things, but that's also a way too long. A tagline. Way too long. Way too long. I saw a tagline. You know, I mean, this might be wrong here, but it between life and death, there's humanoids from the deep. Like, that doesn't fit in this at all.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, what would have fit the time and be a lot shorter is you know, look at the way she's dressed, she had a cone. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, that's that's what they're saying, right? Like everybody is here's what they've said scene or scantily clad to begin with.

SPEAKER_02

So they're wearing bathing suits. Here's what it should have been. It's not like they're wearing bathing suits while they're at like a ski lodge. I got a good one. I'm not chilling this one. Which has been hide your women from humanoids from the deep.

SPEAKER_01

Just you know actually, that's that's not too bad.

SPEAKER_02

Or like just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, since it's taking a playoff jaws, or is that the tagline for Jaws? I don't know. Sharks aren't the only thing. I've heard that somewhere. Yeah. Have I talked to you about mutated salmon people? That's what that should be the yeah. Stay out of the water. There you go. I mean, how hard is that? I mean, when we're getting when we get into the conversation about could we survive this? There it is. Boom. Yep.

SPEAKER_03

Get away from that water. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So I talked a little bit about Barbara Peters. You know, after after this film, I mean, she made a few B movies in the 70s. After this, she switched into some television. She has not been working for quite some time. Some of the cast here, Jim is played by Doug McClure, most notably, most notable for his 249 episodes of The Virginian, which Charlie's dad probably watched. We did Gunsmoke and Bonanza? Bonanza. Yeah. Bonanza. Oh how old did you think he was during this movie? Jim? Like 50. 45-year-old man. Holy shit. That's a that's a Wilford Brimley kind of situation. Right. But he was in a lot of. I mean, he looks younger than Wilfred Brimley.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. 60s, 70s movies. Like he was in this one called, I think he was in Lords of Atlantis, which is another B horror movie. Yeah. He's in that really recognition, at least for me, really recognizable. He was in Disney movies. He was he's a ton of stuff. The land that time forgot. I saw that at the Earth's Core.

SPEAKER_02

Things like that. Yeah, Warlords of Atlantis.

SPEAKER_01

Is that what it is?

SPEAKER_02

Warlords or Lords of Atlantis? Probably both. Was he well cast as the toughest guy in town and the best shooter in town and the the most virile in town?

SPEAKER_01

I have a lot of issues with the cat the male cast.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, just checking. The male cast. So I'm like, man, he pulled. He got it. She seemed like she was 25 years old, too. And he's like, Carol? Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, go for it.

SPEAKER_01

Um I mean, I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

He kind of he strikes me as someone you're gonna cast if that's gonna be like a fisherman or you know, a for a captain of a boat or something, but you know, that's been doing you know, living his life on boats and on the shore for a while. He's got that money probably, he's got that blue collar look, you know. Enough, yeah. Looks good in a flannel, is what you're saying. In a puppy vest. Yep, exactly. Vic Morrow played Hank Slattery in this. I know seeing this movie, I was like, I've seen that guy before, yeah, and it was Bad News Bears. He's the other coach, like the Yankees coach, the one that slaps his kid on the field. He's a good jerk. He's a good jerk.

SPEAKER_01

He's plays the best dickhead ever in the in movie history. Really? Yes. This guy is like a piece of shit. And you can just he isn't this one. He is. I haven't seen them in the movie that he wasn't a piece of shit, and you could tell it within like the first five seconds of him talking in his man right now.

SPEAKER_02

He's got that RBF, you know? He's got that, you know. Yeah. He's got something like that's let's drink some beer and make fun of the Native Americans' face. That's what he's got. Yeah. So Who wants to tell the terrible story about Vic Morrow and their life? In that movie, he was a shit bird, too. He was. He was. In 1982, he tragically died on the set of Twilight Zone movie when a Bad decision by the director to have a helicopter float fly too close to the set went wrong. Rotors flew off the helicopter and killed him, and the helicopter landed on two children that were with him in the scene. What actually led to Jonathan Landis, the director, and four other people that were associated with the film being charged with manslaughter. They were let off the hook. But yeah, tragic. When I was looking them up, I was like, Oh, that was him. I knew I always knew somebody died, but I didn't have the name attached to it. But yeah, it's it's it's wild. Led to huge reforms on safety on the sets, but still shit happens, like the Alec Baldwin thing recently. Just you know Brandon Lee Brandon back in the day. Yeah, so it happens. Did they say this was that it was just like an accident or like it wasn't like a careless thing? It was I mean, the shot didn't yeah, the shot didn't look right with how the helicopter was flying where it was, so they you know basically brought it in closer to the set. And the pyrotechnics and the cable lines got snaggled up after that. Yeah, so leading to that's wild, some bad stuff. Yeah, way to pick a downer movie.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but a good actor. I mean, like he he sells, like I say, for me, I'm not talking about like the best bad guy, I'm not talking about the best villain. I'm like, this is the biggest piece of shit that's ever been on, and that just shows how good an actor he was. If you want a dick in your movie, wait a minute.

SPEAKER_02

Wait a minute. We're not talking about Bone Temple. Damn. So, I mean, a lot of the other actors in this, like, either if you look up their IMDB, it's like best known for humanoids from the deep. So, like, didn't really do much else or had small parts on a lot of things, but well, we can talk about them as we go through the movie. I mean, let me talk about Lin Linthiel for a second. All right, go ahead, this is Miss Salmon, right? No, that's the no, that's not Miss Salmon. You said it wrong. It's Miss Salmon. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_01

No, she was the on the beach to got the first essay. Kfish would have got punched, that guy. Salmon, damn it. She worked as a cabaret singer in Germany and a horse groomer in California. Became the playmate of the month in July 1975, issue of play. Grooming's been in the news a lot lately. Oh, she's and dated like was it Joe Walsh? One of the guys from the East. Joe Walsh. Okay. I can't remember. I think it was Joe Walsh. I can't remember for sure. But anyway. So who's the thing? I mean, like a bit part, never say anything again, but it's not like she was a nobody. Like she's Peggy in this one. Peggy. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

She's like the first girl we see. In the lingerie? Yes. That one, okay. Yeah. And the one that's a mama at the end.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Kind of. I mean, she kind of has a a bit apart that is kind of important. A part that got bit through.

SPEAKER_02

All right. So let me totally stole that from alien. No. Borrowed. Homage. Homage is the charge. We'll get there. This is a film where the below-the-line contributors really shine. Alright. What'd you guys think about the score? Did it stand out at all? No. Not really. Oh, I but it wasn't stand out for being bad either. Freaking Polka Band at the end there. No. No, I don't remember. The composer here, this movie was scored by James Horner. This was the second film he did the music for. His later works included some films you may have heard of: Aliens, Glory, Field of Dreams, Braveheart, Legends of the Fall, Apollo 13, Titanic, A Beautiful Minds. Avatar. Just a few. God damn. Oscar nominated for all of them. He won two Oscars for Titanic, one for score and one for original song, which I guess he shares with Celine Dion. Like, because he didn't sing the original song. Will it go on? What's that name of the song? My Heart Will Go On. Yeah. Or I guess it's like if you win it too, if the person you put in there for the song. My Heart Will Go On. Yeah, if it was written.

SPEAKER_01

If the stay off my boat. Stay off my floating table.

SPEAKER_02

Stay off my door that I'm he does a great job with boat movies, I guess. Yeah. This one. This one and Titanic. Yeah. This one's going on his tombstone, though, right? On the headstone. It's on humanoids from the deep. Yeah, then Avatar and then Titanic. Right. Yeah. Another big takeaway here is the special effects. You remember the name Rob Bouteen from the Thing? Poutine? That's the Canadian. Robine. No, I do not know him. Yeah. Well, he did the special effects for the thing. We talked about that on the Thing episode, which is our first one. He's the one who lived basically lived on set doing those special effects for the first time. He did that at 22 years old. This movie came out two years before the thing. Okay. He designed the humanoids. He he made the suits. He broke into the business when he was 14 years old. Rick Baker, who's another legendary makeup artist who won like seven Oscars, he was a fan of Rick Baker stuff, and he sent him a picture, like a drawing of monsters. Nice. And was just like, What do you think? Could you could I get an autograph back? Because that's how you used to get autographs back in the days. You'd mail, yeah. Yeah, through the mail. You'd find their address. Yeah, I guess so. I don't know. I mean, if they did cons in the 70s or 80s, I don't know. But I remember like I remember hearing tales of like, you know, my dad would like send a baseball when he was a kid, like, sent a baseball to like Nolan Ryan or something. And like he said he never got it back. Nolan was notorious for stealing baseball. But you know, you might get like the wrong address or some shit. I don't know. Yeah. But so he sent a picture, a drawing of some monsters to Rick Baker when he was 14 years old. And instead of getting an autograph, Baker was so impressed he asked him to be an apprentice for him. So Bouteen got to be an apprentice for Rick Baker in a little film from 1977 called Star Wars. Holy shit, man. Wow, it's fucking wild. So this was this was 80, right? Yeah. I thought it looked great. I thought I think the design for the like we talked a little bit at the beginning. It's like you can't spend too much time with action shots with those designs because the arms don't swing naturally. There's no bending elbows and things like that, but it looked slimy, the face looked creepy, the brain was well designed. Like I thought it was good. Some of the decapitation scenes and like and the blood and gust.

SPEAKER_01

Even though this was you know, full light monsters, even in full light, the monsters look good. Look good, right? It looked plenty slimy, no seams, no buckles, and all that was hidden. And I like the the dark green, slimy color of it. Everything was really good. Right? Even the long arms, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So he did this, he did the fog, the howling, the thing, inner space, Robocop, Total Recall. He won an Oscar for Basic Instinct Seven. So I mean Basic Instinct Seven. No, Basic Instinct, oh yeah, two of them. Uh yeah, the film seven. Yeah. So I mean, another guy it's like Lifetime Achievement Award Oscar, winner. I mean, design the suit for Robocop. That's fucking iconic as hell. I mean, short list hall of fame. Let's do it. Yeah, right. Yeah, if we if we do that, it's gotta be a very short list because not all the makeup artists get on there. But anyway, a good a good flick for the below the line actors. I mean, it's just a I mean, Roger Corman, I guess, knew how to pick them, right? He did. I did af this morning, after watching this yesterday, I went back and watched the trailer for the first time for this movie. Did you guys go back and watch the trailer? I did watch the trailer for that time. The trail, like when I watched it, I was like, oh yeah, these these are definitely creatures that are trying to, you know, kill at the fishing town, just territorial and stuff. But the trailer digs in, it leans in hard to the it's going, they're gonna take your women, right? They're gonna kill your men and take your women. So it's like they're really exploiting that part of the the movie, too. So just want to throw that out there. Yeah, yeah. This movie's a gem. I can't say anything else about it. Made on a two and a half million dollar budget, gross 2.1 million dollars, so didn't make the money. But like I said, look what was out. Empire Strikes Back. I mean, yeah, that's like you know, right now with the Odyssey and Toy Story 5 and all that shit, like Evil Dead Burn not making anything in the box office, all that shit going on. But anyway, it's when you make 490 movies or whatever. I think you figure out the hey, let's make it for this price. You you brought this up, the budget wise, you make it for this price. We're gonna do not much more in the theaters, but then we're gonna sell it on cinematics, we're gonna sell it on these things, and that we're just gonna churn it out. On the back end, trade the rights, exactly. So, like we're gonna make money off this. Yeah, you can buy a steelbook of this, pillows, contraceptives, metacritic score 48 out of six critics. So, not many critics, but but still right in the middle. For this movie, it was a respectable score for sure. For a B movie, that's great. Yeah, Rotten Tomatoes 45%, audience score 41%. So, right in line. Yeah, that's a little low on the fan side. I feel like the fans would have liked it more than the critics.

SPEAKER_01

It is a cold classic.

SPEAKER_02

I mean it's it's definitely a call classic. Anything you guys want to hit on before we jump into what this movie is and the scenes? Oh, wait, no, I think I'd like to hit on Dr. Susan Drake. That's what I was going for. Hit on she's dumb. Go ahead. No, I'm just joking. She uh shoot scientists. We'll talk, yeah. She's a professional scientist, and she's tall as shit, and they even make a joke about it in the movie a little bit, or Jim stands on his tiptoes. Did anybody else feel like they were trying to make his wife, Carol, jealous of this tall, beautiful scientist?

SPEAKER_01

We didn't cover that. How old is Carol? Like 24? It feels like we don't know. She looks younger than him by a half his age. I just tried to pick up the couple of things.

SPEAKER_02

And they have a toddler. Yeah. So he picked her up in high school. He's not human blanks, buddy. So he's got that money for that at late in life, baby. Yeah, it felt like when she wanted to go on the boat with him, like there was a look from Carol, like, oh, trust her. Yeah. So this movie, you know, the long and short of it is that there is this fishing town, and the fishing's not going so well, and there's also a cannery that's going to be moving into town, and the cannery is supposed to bring money, which brings jobs, which makes towns more prosperous. The Native American and also puts a strain on the natural resources, right? But also puts a strain on the natural resources. But then they so this fishing town, there's these something happens that makes some of the fish turn into these humanoids, these monsters, which start attacking the townspeople, and then they have to figure out what it is and why they're doing it. Well, what happened was they were they were experimenting on these salmon, and then a lot of those salmon got out, right? And they were eaten by other people. Vic Morrow was more more primitive fish, and that turned the primitive fish into monsters. Yeah, from the deep. Don't know how fish get to be humanoid, but I mean, don't because DNA five was put into the salmon, okay? To make them bigger, stronger, faster. Number five. Oh, number five. Oh, I forgot about number five.

SPEAKER_01

Not DNA four, because DNA four would have been fine. Six would have been too much.

SPEAKER_02

You're talking crazy now, buddy.

SPEAKER_01

So it's stitch level.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So this movie, if you fire it up, you're automatically thinking you're watching the wrong thing because the title comes up, it says monster, which is the jap what they called it in Japan. And then it says humanoids from the deep in like two-point font. Like you almost need a magnifying glass to see where it says humanoids from the deepest production's fault. They reference monster later when the cannery guy's trying to reel in that it's a monster.

SPEAKER_04

It's a monster.

SPEAKER_02

This movie opens like jaws. You get a POV of something swimming under the water. The opening credits set the scene, like we're in this fishing town. Did you get the did you see like the one-legged seagull? It was sticking its leg behind me. I stared at us. It was holding it back. Oh, it was stared at us. I was like, I got a one-legged seagull.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. It was a one-legged seagull. Obviously, the cameraman thought it too, because he's like, hold on, guys, I gotta get him, gotta get some some uh reel of this one-legged I have to shoot this. Keep it rolling seagull.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so it's this fishing town, looks like the Pacific Northwest. Within the first two minutes, you get a little Alaska. No, it wasn't yeah, yeah. Within the first two minutes, you already get a you people from Hank towards Johnny. It's like, oh, we're going there already. People don't understand how important this would be. Oh, what do you mean? Yeah, we meet Hank, Jim, and Johnny, they're local fishermen. You can tell Hank and Johnny don't get along. I mean, Johnny is at least part Native American, if not full, and they're complaining about like there's no fish, they're gonna open a cannery in a couple years, and like, you know, if you open that cannery, there ain't gonna be no more fish. Hank's like, well, that cannery means progress, progress means money, and that's something you people wouldn't know anything about.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, see, yeah, like was he the only Native American whether any of them I don't remember seeing one?

SPEAKER_02

Just one guy, just him, I think the reservation that lived in that area, but they got firebombed. So I mean, he has a lawyer, but they don't show it because there was a group of them. You hear him clear as day, but like they don't show them because they show Hank sneaking up to his house. There was a group of them discussing that action, right? That legal action. Yep. Yeah, it's it's about to be a bad day for Deke, right? Deke, he's one of the fishermen. A real bad day. It's gonna be a bad day for him. His beard was coming. Bad parenting. Oh, yeah. He makes a comment about like, oh, it's gonna be a great day. Like, my beard is scruffy, and I'm like, that you don't even have a beard, dude. He did later, he had like more of a five o'clock or like an eight o'clock shadow.

SPEAKER_01

I knew when the first kill was a kid, it was gonna be a bad movie.

SPEAKER_02

Right. Yeah. Oh, a bad parent. Like he leaves his like you didn't put any gas for the winch. I'm like, stupid song. You and your job. The kids there playing as Game Boy, man. Reading a copy of the I was playing Tecmo Bowl. Whatever the little football-baseball hand nails were at the time. So they go out there, they catch something in their net, they need the winch to pull it up, and all you see you see this giant hand, which is the humanoid hand, and it looked pretty good. You know, give you a little glimpse of it, they don't show you all the things. Yeah. Engine won't start, and then I guess his first mate or the guy driving the boat, he's like says something about what the engine won't start. He's like, I guess the oil pressure finally went out. And Deke's like, ah shit, why me? Why me? All right, so those nets, right? Let's talk about those nets and the winch, right? Like, those are meant to bring up like hundreds and hundreds of pounds of fish, right?

SPEAKER_01

Thousands of pounds of fish. One how heavy is this humanoid? 200, 300 pound humanoid from the deep three gonna stop. Maybe it was supposed to be like a swimming against the net, but they don't show that. So you don't know. You just don't know. You just have to assume that this is a shitty wedge, too, probably an amateur net.

SPEAKER_02

Not a professional scientist net. Nope. Jackie, the little boy, he spills the gas. Then they have him lean over the boat to pull the line in. They have him lean over the boat to pull the line in. Yeah, we'll say bend over further or something like that. Further, grab deeper. Anyone has ever been on a boat, worked on a boat? Like, you don't just grab line with your bare hands that could get yanked. You just don't. And we've never been on a boat, and we were like, that's a safety issue. Like, you're gonna get your hands ripped to shit. I don't want to brag with Charlie and I have both reeled in a shark before.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Cool. Me too. And the three of us are shark hunters. Shark hunters. Yeah, uh catch and release, though. You know, when Jackie falls in the water because something pulls him in, he falls off the boat, and then you see the blood. That was a cool shot. That camera shot. It's like the the blue of the sea, and then the blood starts just filling this filling the frame. Rest in peace. Um, you know, and then yeah, and then dude, dude with the flare gun comes out to help and trips and falls, and the flare goes off right where the gas was spilled. Right. And the boat exploded. The boat exploded like it was hit with a missile. Like tomahawk. Tomahawk. It wasn't like, oh, it's on fire. This thing went like a mushroom cloud. Yes. Everybody's like, what was that? Not a good day for Deke. Not a good day for dogs. No days were good for dogs in this movie. Or dog. Yeah, if you like dogs, if you're if you go to that website before you watch a movie, like Does the Dog Die? Like it's gonna be a uh it's gonna be like a three-page document. Yes, I hand like so. Actually, now that you bring up the thing, like that the the dog kind of what the gooey dog that it shows on the beach or whatever. I okay. I can see the fingerprints. Maybe Rob Oteen hated dogs. Unknowable the thing, dogs, and then like there's nine of them in this. Well, they show three, they show four, but he they commented that like seven of them were called the dock, plus there's two that don't they don't count to those shows. If we talked a little before we start, don't we think there would have been a town hall meeting or something about all the dogs that were murdered on the same day?

SPEAKER_01

That's where the they could have done the extra 20 minutes. I mean, there's a lot they really leave out that is classic horror movie, monster movie stuff. Like it jaws. I mean, there's a reason why it's the all-time best water horror movie ever. Wait, better than humanoids from TV. Slightly. Only because they lost the 20 minutes they should have done with more creeping around, more darkness, more town hall meetings. More warnings about like something's going on in town. So can you get that on a swivel? Build the mood, build the atmosphere, guys.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So at night we see Jim's Jim's dog gets it from one of the humanoids, pretty brutal. Oh, yeah. When with the next morning when Jim and Jim and his wife Carol are going to look, they're looking around the beach, they're looking around the woods. And this is where we get well, they see the slime, and then they start tracking the slime. Oh, yeah, they see this yellow slime on the trash can, and Jim like puts his fingers in it and then just like wipes it on his pants like it's no big thing. And I'm like, ew, that's like yellow slime, man. You know what that is? And then I turn it. It's on a trash can. I turned to Atticus. I was like, and then he's leading her through the woods like she is not free to leave. The way he's holding her arm, I was like, man, you might need to talk to somebody. What do you think about so that while they're looking, they cut to Hank, who's Vic Morrow, they cut to him and his boys, like unloading cases of beer. Lots of beer.

SPEAKER_01

Where did they go with all that fucking beer?

SPEAKER_02

That was a literal truckload. It was either maybe they're getting ready for the or they were taking it to the party that they're going to. Yeah, the cannery. That wasn't like five percent of what was in that trick. He was holding 36 beer. Well, did you notice Hank had a beer can in his coffee mug and he was drinking the beer but holding the handle of the coffee mug, but like drinking the beer like he's drinking a coffee? That's a problem. We should normalize that. I heard uh I got my cup of coffee, but it's really a beer can in it. And if you work remote, I hear the way to do it is like you every once in a while you just have to blow on the mug, like to pretend that you're not drinking that. That's good. But I was like, that that's a nifty move there, just the the beer can in the coffee mug. Like it's I don't know, it's the 80s, bro. Something I noticed. Then they notice all the other dogs on the dock, they show two of them that are that had that had died and a little bit of blood on them, and then we get you know, racist Hank again. He's like, the only one, the only dog still alive is the engines, right? It's like God come John Eagle, Johnny Eagle something. We gotta do something about this, and you what do they do about it? We'll find out in a minute. Yeah, so you know, this is where I think the director was probably like or or at least Roger Corman, because Barbara Peters, I don't think, put this part in there, but was like, sorry about the dead dogs. Here's a busty blonde and an eglige getting ready for bed, right? Right, and we meet Peggy, you know, there's some jump scares, she hears some noises, whatever. Her boyfriend comes in the door, like comes in the side door, but scares her. But she's getting ready for this like little meeting, the town meeting, right? Yeah, it kind of felt like she was like getting ready, wrapping down for bed. This meeting's full full of plot holes, and it's probably one of them. Right. She looks like she's getting ready for bed. Then they're like, Jim's coming soon, and then they all leave together and go to the Yeah, because she even said, He's like, if you would have stabbed me, we couldn't have done this, and like makes his move. They're gonna be stabbing later, but yeah, and then she's like, not really feeling it. Like, I'm gonna go to bed, whatever. But then they go to this party instead at the town at the minute community center. They lay down in the bed of the truck, and yeah, but then so they're in the back of the truck and they don't even go into the party because what's what's the boyfriend's name? Jerry? Jerry, right? Sure, sure. Jerry. I think he he's he brought his brought a flask. He's like, Hey, I got this. And she's like, What's this, gin? Oh, you remembered. You man, how sweet. Who's drinking warm gin out of a flask? Who's drinking warm gin just a body flask? Body temperature gin. Ugh, gross, man. I mean, I like gin and tonic, but I'm not drinking warm gin. There now is not much worse than that. But yeah, so they get in the back of the pickup with the truck bed on top, which is really fun when the fight scene happens, and yeah, he opens the window to the bed of the truck and catches a fist and falls back. Yeah, it's so good. So this town meeting is to introduce the cannery. Yeah, this is too. Yeah, the the the people from the the they're coming in town, and we meet, I guess, the guy who is the head head of that or the owner of that, and then we meet his like number two, who looks like a prick. And what's the little fucking thing he does when they introduce him? Like my hand in the air, he's like, hmm, look at me. Like it's It's weird and not natural, but it's not as weird as Dr. Susan Greg or whatever. Susan, she's look she looks stare. She looks high as a kite and is like, do they know I'm high as a kite? Because she stares, she's staring into space. Everybody knows they introduce her. She's frozen and she just is like nods, like, right.

SPEAKER_01

Guaranteed. Guaranteed there was a cocaine budget on this film. Guaranteed. It was called something else, but there was a cocaine budget on this film. A writing.

SPEAKER_02

It's a writing. Oh my god. She looked like what you look like when you're high and you're trying to hide it. It was like, dude. They call her, they they even like what is what do they say when they introduce her? Like, she's a great little scientist. Like, just more misogyny. Oh, yeah. She's like, like, they might as well just said she's a great little scientist for a woman, is what they were trying to say. Don't let the breast fool you guys. She's a professional scientist. And then the mic's too good for us to have a second drink. No, I just I've been talking a lot, so I haven't finished my first. I'm sorry. I'll get there. This is humanoids from the deep. It's not the Odyssey we're reviewing. You gotta drink suburban, buddy. I am. I'm just yeah, I've been talking about it. This ain't gone with the wind, bro. You sure? I like I like this more than Gone with the Wind, not gonna lie. But anyway. I forgot to mention the uh there was a remake of this, but we'll talk about that later. Yeah, I didn't watch that one. It was a TV movie. Yeah, they made a TV movie of this in the 90s, but it's a TV movie, so never been. It's not gonna have anything you want. It's not gonna have the there's probably no gore, it's probably no nudity. Like there's nothing you want to do. I don't I don't see nudity. I don't I don't I don't want to watch that.

SPEAKER_01

This could be a series on Max.

SPEAKER_02

It could be on Max for sure.

SPEAKER_01

This could be a series.

SPEAKER_02

So what they're what they're I don't know what the cannery has to do with like salmon and their studies and what they're trying to do to make.

SPEAKER_01

We want to have more salmon, so you can sell more cans of fish, right? Is that what it is? They're gonna package tuna package and export, right? Although I've never had salmon in a can. I've had tuna.

SPEAKER_02

I know that's so they that's an expensive fish to put in a can. Yeah, so they explain that they've found a way to make salmon grow bigger, faster, and twice as plentiful. And no questions, let's all right, let's dance, let's get this party going. It's like what the how how? Like nobody like everyone's like, Oh, that's great. No questions, great news, whatever. I believe it when I see it, and then like that's what I'm talking about. She he says, I believe when I see it, and she goes, Oh, you'll see it. And like she's like turning on some charm with uh with Jim. I get it though, he's quite the cat. I could show you in the back right now. So Johnny he shows up to the party and he he carries his now dead dog into the party. That's a buzzkill. Yeah, don't kill somebody's dog. Which now he they mentioned that there were seven dogs killed on the dock. We saw Baron, Jim, and Carol's dog get it, and now Johnny's dog. So that's nine dead dogs. So they don't this movie. They do not say we would never do something like that to your dog. They all but say, Oh, it's funny that all our dogs died. Right. Yeah. So Johnny says to Hank, he's like, We want all of the Indian land along the river given back. We're gonna stop your cannery slattery, is what he says. Cannery slattery. Make things out of clay, play down by the bay. I just may. What do you say? Like, you know, that'll be a little piece of shit for breakfast. And then it turns into a brawl, right? They're like, take this thing outside, and Hank acts like he's not gonna hit him, and then Pimp slaps the shit out of him. The fake out backhand. Yeah, he like turns away, like, ah no, and then just backhands. Backhand the shit out of him. I saw his like ghost leave his body for a second and come back in. It was like Yeah, so there's a brawl, and then real bad edit where some gunshots go off, and the the deputy. You hear the gunshots, they show the deputy, but he clearly did not just shoot the gun. He's just like, All right, break it up. He's like holding the gun down by his side. That guy, that sheriff seems about as competent as a like a toad. Nothing, right?

SPEAKER_01

They're gonna use one of those dead dogs that have done a better job.

SPEAKER_02

So at this point, Hank Slattery, he's gonna sneak up on Johnny, right? Johnny's talking to his advisor or his lawyer or his team or whatever about how we're gonna acquire our land. Let's know what they're gonna do next. And what how like what can we do to stop this or whatever? Except they don't show any of those people. But as Hank is sneaking up on him, which he goes like the slowest route possible by taking his boat up the river, climbing up the bank, doesn't really tie his boat off. He like grabs the rope and like sets it on a branch and like goes on like that's gonna be. Your getaway is gone, bro. He was dressed for covet covert operation, though. He had that little beanie on, and so he and then he sneaks like behind someone's pickup and then sneaks up to his house. And I'm like, dude, you could have driven up there and like parked 100 feet away and like walked up there, but yeah, so he takes the longest route possible to get there, sneaks over, and he can hear from the outside. You can hear this discussion clear as day from the outside shouting about about their plan. Do you think that was a reshoot? It had probably was a reshoot. Had to be, had to be something they added. You have to explain. There's there's definitely some of these that are you can tell they spliced it in that was like not a part of the doesn't make sense that you would just firebomb a house. Let's add a scene, maybe. Well, that's later, right? I'm saying, but like how do we get from there to there? They're probably like, let's explain a little bit about what they were gonna do. Yeah, because obviously Johnny wasn't on set, you know. Like he was cut to like Susan goes out with Jim on his boat, and they're they're trying to find you know some fish, and she's gonna take some pictures and stuff like that. And and so he he's reeling something in, and she takes a picture of it. You can't really see it because it's really close to the shore. Close, like comes up to the water line, but you can't really see what it is. Yeah, and then he's like, Did you see it? And she's like, I won't know till I developed the pictures. I'm I'm thinking like your eyes are better than what a picture's gonna show you, right? Like, look like a humanoid from the deep tomato. I thought it was gonna be Jackie. Yeah, I thought it was gonna be the little boy. I mean, but like the line, the line breaks, and we don't get to see what it is. But you know, especially a 1970s camera, 1980s camera. Like, your eyes are better than that. Had the hornballs already gotten attacked yet? Or not yet? Okay. This is this is where Jerry and Peggy go swimming. And their cutshit a partner. Yeah, they they go swimming and they you know playful swimming, you get POV as something under the water. Now it's now it's about to happen. And so so Jerry gets pulled under and struggle, struggle, struggle. Peggy finds like flips him over half his face ripped off. Pretty good. That look awesome. Oh, he's he's teasing her, pretending to drown. You know, that's teas teasing her first, but then actually. Private the 13th, you know. Yeah, and then you know, and then he loses half his face, and then the pe the creature pulls Peggy up on shore and mounts her mounts her, yeah, straight up just raw daylight, just like the tagline says, you know, we we're here to mate with your women. Yeah, he kill your men and mate with the women, right? That creature was like a missionary mounting. The other one, though, was even rougher, though. We're gonna get to that in a second. The tent-based one. That one was the they went for it. Yeah, Peggy did not give consent on you know, to that creature to mount her. No, it's bad. You can take away consent anytime you want to, right? So even if she did. Exactly. Uh that was illegal even in the 80s. Even in the 80s, that was bad. Slattery, him and his guys are at the bar, and they're like, we gotta take out Johnny and his people. Do you think like this kind of stuff inspired like Taylor Sheridan to do Yellowstone? Like, which is about like, you know, land and taking land. I see Yellowstone all over this, yeah. Yeah. This is where so after they come up with this plan in the bar, they're gonna take Johnny's land. This is where they insert the they definitely insert a scene that was not in the original cut of the couple in the tent with the ventriloquist. What the ventriloquist dummy? What the fuck are we watching here? Whatever he was saying to her was good, it was working. She was working before you see there's a dummy, you hear her, she's like, Show me just the head. The head's the best part. And then they show the ventriloquist who's like, you see his head, and like he's like, You want to see my woodpecker? I don't know. Will I get splinters? Yeah, don't worry, I've been sanded. Oh bet you haven't been with two dummies before. Oh my god. Yeah, so yeah. Well, yeah, he's the only one. It's a mood killer. Like I said, I thought I was the only one that like used that as like to set the mood, right? Like a little bit of dad jokes with my ventriloquist doll, and the and the tits fly out, you know, just like I can't control it. I had to hang it up though. You know, once I put the ring on, I had to hang up the dummy. Jesus.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_02

Uh yeah, they definitely this is not part of the original movie. You can definitely tell. Like, even the film stock looks different, like it's it looks it just looks different. So without it though, it would have been 70 minutes long, right? It's the same 75 minutes.

SPEAKER_01

Like the first cut was probably 62 minutes before they're like, Hey, or was it longer and they just cut it all, cut out stuff that would probably have made the movie better, just so they could have boobs and rape scenes.

SPEAKER_02

They cut out the parts where it's like blah blah blah. They cut the blah blah blah out. They're like boobs, we need boob boob boobs. Yeah. I mean, originally they they wanted to have the the rape stuff because that was the what the creatures do. So yeah, the trailer was she didn't put it in later, so Corman's like, well, I'll make it and I'll put it in there. And then she did her full front frontal run. Don't forget the full frontal run. Um, right towards another humanoid. How does she not see it? This thing was ripped broad daylight. This thing rips the tent apart, rips the guy. I don't even know who the guy's name is, rips the like rips his back open. You see a big gory gash, like where his back's been ripped apart. And then she gets out of the tent and goes running full frontal up the beach. And but like right into the arms of another humanoid that's like sitting there waiting. So no coming. Is this the first time that we realize it's more than one humanoid? Yes, okay. So maybe that was the goal there to show hey, it's not just one humanoid, it's not just Fred the uh Fred the Flipper guy, but done so badly. Fred the flipper guy. Fred the flipper guy. Oh my god, is that a fucking flipper? One of them one of them flipper people. Um so yeah, right into the hands of another one of these things. Yeah, man. And then now we get to cut to back to the real movie, where Hank and Hank is going towards Johnny's place, and Johnny's people are following Hank. They're going, they're both in their boats going up the river in the slowest boat chase possible. Yeah, or no, it's maybe it's Hank following Johnny's people. So in a state of the city. I just realized what they spliced in this tent scene. Yeah, that makes sense too, because it didn't fit the end of the movie. Because obviously, there would have been two expected expectant mothers of these humanoids, right? I guess. They just look completely, you know, didn't even give her a little baby at the end. Unless that humanoid was shooting blanks. I don't know. Too much rain. Yeah. You know, John, they get to Johnny's place, and this is the Molotov cocktail that Hank's buddy throws at Johnny's house. Nitroglycerin. Oh my god. This thing blows his shack to smithereens. Like we thought the boat explosion was crazy. This was like, what the fuck was in that bottle? Yeah, there's nothing. Nuclear uranium. What's in a Molotov cocktail? Newtonium? It's alcohol in a breakable bottle and a flame, right? So it's a catalyst delivery system. Yeah, and then an explosive. Not a bomb is way, way too in.

SPEAKER_01

It's like, okay, there's no C4. I'm thinking Roger would put four sticks of dynamite. Roll a Molotov, boom.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. That's this thing. It's that's the worst special effect. Well, not the worst. It's not a bad fire. Yeah. Cool. Exactly. Like they it looked like they literally blew this shit up. How about least explainable special effect? And then the next one's coming up too. Yeah. Yeah. Johnny happens to have you know a fire hose standing by, which is great. Linda, she runs down to the dock and gets like half a bucket of water. Like she's gonna put this fire out with that. Like Linda, you didn't even dump that whole bucket in. You just got a little bit. A little burn on top of the water. Yeah. You know, Johnny's got a little fire hose standing by conveniently, starts spraying the thing down. But who's the other? Is it Tommy? Yeah, Tommy's the other guy that's with Johnny. It's Johnny, Tommy, and Linda. And Tommy goes down to the dock with a rifle. He's kind of got a Luke Skywalker look to him. That's what I thought. I'm like, is that Mark Hamill? He could have definitely looks like Luke Skywalker. He's death, the same hair. He's definitely looks like him. And he goes down there with a rifle thinking, and he's looking, he's just kind of shooting in the darkness. Like who, like I think you son's bitch is basically shooting. Get some a bolt action just shooting randomly into the and then one of the humanoids gets him. But we don't, I don't think they explain if he dies or not. Because they they find him and they they get him. He's not responsive, like he he's stable, but he's not awake yet later in the like they get him, Johnny gets him in the boat, and the next morning at the docks, like Johnny and Linda bring him in. Again, I don't know why they didn't just bring him by by road. Isn't Linda the other one that's up in? She does like she drove her truck off that bridge, remember? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Use my truck, get to town, you know. Right, that's right. Yeah, Linda's supposed to go into town, and her shirt while she's driving, she gets attacked by the humanoids. Who I guess were sitting on the roof at some point because they reach down and smash the windshield. Show them, it showed a view above the thing and it did not show them, but yeah. And then her truck goes off a bridge that must have been carrying a metric ton of C4 in the back because it goes off a bridge and when it when it falls, like I don't know, four stories and lands like no head first. There's no water there anymore. Again, explodes.

SPEAKER_03

All I see is hits water and then explodes.

SPEAKER_01

Another missile hits this truck as soon as it hits the ground. What was the movie where they're filming the Vietnam movie? Oh, Tropic Thunder. Tropic Thunder. What's his name? The the pyrotechnic guy. All I see is that guy left. Come on, guess.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, that's probably what it was. Way too enthusiastic. Oh my god. So many explosions are unexplainable. Like that wouldn't happen. I know you take liberties with movies and stuff, but and but Jesus Christ, this is this truck would not explode like that. Way too calm for somebody who just like got a humanoid from the deep off the roof. She's just driving, like, okay, back to my mission here. Yeah. What level of Lexapro is that?

SPEAKER_01

Some beta blockers and shit. That's some balium. That's some old school Valium. They didn't have that back then. That's like four Valium.

SPEAKER_02

So this is where we get like Hank's Hank almost gets off the hook. I guess he's off the hook here because Johnny starts telling the story that it was like sea monsters attacked Tommy and he saw them. And Johnny's like, yeah. Or Hank's like, Yeah, yeah, sea monsters. They they probably are the ones that blew up your house. Sea monsters, yeah. That's what it was. This is like Norm McDonald in 30 days. That's kind of what he sort of sounded like. He's like, I bet it was the ones that blew up your house, too. Like, motherfuckers have got dynamite now. We gotta do that. I thought he was trying to be like, I thought like the delivery was supposed to be like, Can you believe this shit he's trying to tell us happened, right? Like I think he was trying to like he must have killed Johnny. Is that Johnny that we brought in? He must have done that to him. What's going on? Locked Tommy, yeah. Tommy. Tommy, yeah. Tommy. Not Johnny Eagle. Not Johnny Eagle. Yeah, it must be them sea monsters that blew up your house. Yeah, so then we get to think a little bit like where we get back to the Dr. Susan, and she's trying to like explain that she knows what this shit is when she really doesn't fucking know. You forgot homeboy being like, I'm gonna go out there and get a search party, or like he's immediately like Johnny's coming with me, you know. Yeah, and the sheriff's like, I don't know if that's okay. Yeah. This is where she's like, I'm a scientist, you know. I'm a professional scientist. She says these things are nocturnal, but we've already seen them in the daylight. That's when they do all their raping. From what you're describing, so you're already wrong. From what I'm hearing for the first time ever, these are nocturnal things. She's she, I mean, she's a scientist in this blue-collar town. She's probably got this already in her mind, like, I'm the smartest person. English literature, I can bullshit these people, and no, you can't. You're stupid. So she's blue, blue, she's bullshitting these blue-collar folks, she's drawing sketches, and she says these are intelligent creatures, all this stuff, and so they're gonna go out and try to find these things. She she lets it slip that she's oh, it's way further developed than I would have expected or projected. Like she's not playing her cards too close to the you know, the vest there. Yeah, and so it's is it her and Jim and Carol go out, or is it her and Jim and Johnny? Johnny's go out and they they find the caves, and they're like, We're gonna go inspect these caves. Maybe there's the creatures are in there. Yeah, let's do that. That's the bay, right? They're on like a bay, right? Yeah, they're like it's like an inlet from the ocean. They go to one spot and drop a line and think they're gonna catch a humanoid from the deep, and but it was just a salmon. Never thought I'd be so mad at a fish. I was like, that that plan was both out of here. Right. They catch one fish. Someone actually catches a fish in this movie, these professional fish. Then they notice the caves. Then they notice the caves, and then they go in and and it they find the creatures, and it turns into a gunfight. The creatures don't have guns, but they they bring their guns.

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna say A, every teenager in that town knew about those caves. B, that those caves are full of beer cans and beer bottles. You scott them?

SPEAKER_02

Probably.

SPEAKER_01

Probably.

SPEAKER_02

Charlie could have benefited from some of that.

SPEAKER_01

There's some essay going on in those caves, and it probably wasn't no humanoids for decades.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and they weren't even trying to hide, they're just laying on that, like just gooing on the beach. There was the thing called that Hugh Hefner had like the cave at his swimming pool. The blue grotto. The grotto, yeah. The grotto grotto's in Italy. The cave. He had a swimming pool with like the cave, and like the cave was like the grotto, or like if you go in that cave, like there's sex going on, basically. Don't go in with the blue light, and you'll blind yourself. Black light, black light, you'll blind yourself. Oh man. So it turns into a gunfight. I guess we learned a little bit about the creatures that you did. You kill them with a gun. Yeah. How many how many villains are we gonna do? Or a two by four later work? Not many, you know. I love it. Yeah, they whenever there's plentiful, whenever there's a lot of villains, you can kill them with guns. Yeah. Like whenever there's one, nah, you can't kill them with a gun. They find so they find them. Peggy was actually having a spa day, a nice seaweed wrap. They they find that she's okay. Peggy. Is she though? Well, they they they pull apart all the seaweed and find that she's still alive. Not alive. I wouldn't say in a spa thing, don't you go get wrapped in seaweed? Yeah, they did.

SPEAKER_01

If you're I don't think it's the same thing, not that kind of spa day. No, she didn't have that.

SPEAKER_02

But doggy style girl did not get found on the beach. No, she's just missing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, just gone.

SPEAKER_02

So Peggy, Peggy's still alive, thank God. And then and then at the autopsy scene where one of the creatures that they've killed, they bring in and Dr. Susan is I want to use doctor loosely because she's a scientist. Hey, professional scientists terrible. She's got a master, she doesn't have to. She gets paid to be a scientist that she is a scientist. Some of the worst acting you'll ever see, ever see in this in this. Oh, you mean the little dude that had the windows? Oh my god, the little scene the that dude. Your theory could be wrong. I hit him. I hit him. He's like, Your theory could be wrong, Dr. Susan. Like, just what are we doing? And uh, she's like, calls him a stupid ass, like you stupid ass. I got this green seven-foot piece of shit on here, and you're saying I'm wrong.

SPEAKER_01

You know, it would have made that seem better if she had pimps left. Like the fake out back backhand, yeah. Some ring scratches on his face, and he goes, and then every time we see him later, he's flinching.

SPEAKER_02

So this is where we find out like what created these things. And so what the cannery company was doing, and what Dr. Susan was doing was implanting DNA 5, as we mentioned, into salmon to make them grow faster, bigger, twice as plentiful. I don't know how you make them twice as plentiful, like human double. They have more babies. I guess they squirt out more eggs, and then another fish comes along, you know, does his thing. But wherever they were doing this, they got out, and then some other fish ate them, and those fish are now humanoids from some prehistoric era. I think was that I think they used the w the term prehistoric era. Yeah, unless more primitive fish more primitive fish ate it, and now they've turned into this mon these monsters. So that's how we got to Tenuous at best. Because everybody knows that things you eat can affect your DNA. Right. Everybody knows that. Yes. Right. Exactly. You just ingest it and now you turn into it. I was told that if I ate too many potato chips, I would turn into a potato chip. So I mean it's that theory. Yeah. Right. I think we've all been told that at some point. Or before the ages. And then so now they don't know how many are out there, and they they're explaining this, you know, in a very Jurassic Park kind of style, explaining how the DNA worked and how what whole the whole thing that happened and genetic modification and all that stuff. And then they realize, like, oh my god, a festival. The festival is going on. The salmon festival. Must have brought in just ringing the dinner belly bounties worth of people. Yeah. Because you would think that the important people would have come to the town hall meeting where they were having that like original polka dance. They must have got out about the uh the old band that was playing. They must have been like, oh, we gotta see that. The festival down by the docks. You got c fish was there. Yeah, you got the radios there, you got the Ferris wheel going, the merry-go-round, you got a marching band. Yeah, Miss Sam's. Those docks stink like shit. Parade. Nothing out of the docks. Miss Solomon was there. Miss Solomon, the world's worst radio DJ. Hey, I bad, bad Mike Michaels coming to you from the big Salmon Fest. You know what? He took his duty. Like he took it seriously because he kept recording. It's like, you know how they say the band played on on the Titanic? He kept recording.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you for your service.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly. He says something like, if you got a free hand, give me a call. I may have my hands full as he like pulls Miss Salmon's sash out of the way to show us her boobs. Like, but Miss Salmon is probably a high school senior award.

SPEAKER_01

Like, you know, you know her boyfriend stinks of fish and could probably fight.

SPEAKER_02

Got one of them fish hooks from my what you did last summer. Huh? Oh man. Everybody's got one of those in that town. Some Michael's about to get his ass whipped. They they we cut to Jim's house, and Carol, Jim's out there, obviously, but Carol's there with the baby. And we're like, oh shit. The toddler's still in this movie, right? And then Jim and the gang, they bring a humanoid and a body bag to this festival. For what? Why you know you had like why are they bringing this to the festival? To dump on the docks in front of a hundred people and be like, look, I'm in their corner. I'm in their corner. They were like, they did the mental math. They're like, they're not gonna believe this shit. Nope. So let's skip that part. Let's skip the 10 minutes where they don't believe us and let's just dump this ugly, stinky ass thing on the thing. Yeah, y'all need to go. Okay. That's you have to. It's a shocking audit. Don't stop it. But does that like lure the other ones in? Like, oh, we smell our dead brother. Like, you must be on shore. Let's go up there. Because as soon as they bring this thing and dump it, the other ones start jumping out of the fucking floor, jumping through the docks, and then shit's hell breaks through. Unarmed monsters, right? So that's my biggest concern. Oh, they got arms. They got they got armed, they got a right to bear arms. They got some bear arms on them. But yeah, my thing is like anything could have been like chairs could have been used as weapons. Anything could have been used as weapons against. But what does genius Dr. Susan do? We're just gonna pour gasoline all over the fucking like there's 50 gallons of gas in the thing. All over the water. Just dump it in the water, we'll light up fire. I'm like, they're on land. Now they're staying. Thanks. Idiots. Well, they got like seven of them in the water. We're gonna chase them fire spots. Man, and then once hell breaks loose, I feel like the rate the DJ starts calling it like he's calling a football game. That's what I'm saying. He had a tone like he was calling a football game, though. He's like, it's a scene of panic. One just got open 15 yards, 10 yards away. Number 52. And he snatches through the boot. I just saw an arm ripped off. Folks, this is crazy. Now it's going after a young woman. Yes, it's coming at me across the table. Good. Bang. He definitely is playing it like he's announcing a sporting event. Right. Like five minutes into just people running for cover and running for their lives, like the Ferris wheels still rolling, like the music's still playing.

SPEAKER_01

Why did they not show one up in the fair up in one of the seats in the fair missed opportunity?

SPEAKER_02

The ones on the carousel were funny. That was funny. Yeah, like they're on the carousel. That's still someone's still operating that. Well, I think you have to stop it with the button, right? So they just it's probably a dead man switch. So if the operator has a heart attack. I have never seen a dead man switch. On a carnival ride? Definitely not a fair one.

SPEAKER_01

Hell no. They push a button, they just look.

SPEAKER_02

They got no safety things.

SPEAKER_01

How to runaway, too. Hell. Kids can fit for themselves.

SPEAKER_02

They have small hands. They smell like cabbage. Anyway. Anyway. So it catches, you know, one of them comes through and bad Mike Michaels. He he bites it, he gets his chest ripped off. You see his rib cage. He had a hero moment, though. He stood in front of the city. Yeah, he tried to save Miss Salmon because he wanted to get some later. He wanted to get his hands full later. Somehow her top comes off. Bad move, Mike. Somehow Salmon's top comes off. Yeah. Well, somehow is the the humanoid rips it off. Because, you know, even though it's a humanoid and all it wants to do is mate, it you know, you gotta take that top off first. Right. A little foreplay. It's all about blood flow. Yeah. Never mind. God. Jesus Christ. If you're not in the mood, you're not in the mood, guys. But you know what? You know what Miss Salmon does is grabs a rock and fights and bashes the humanoid skull in. Unskulled brain in. And it works. They literally have the biggest targets of any monster. Like they have this giant brain that's like, that's the weak spot. If you're playing a video game, you know that's the weak spot.

SPEAKER_01

With no skull, no bone over it, just exposed.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. So yeah, we re we've already realized you can kill these things with guns. Now you can kill them by just with a two by four. Somebody rips a board off of one of the games or one of the food stands and just smashes the creators that one's head in. Johnny earlier, Johnny. I think with an I think Johnny with an axe kills one of them earlier. That was pretty cool. From the gang of people, just like I felt sorry for the get out of there, bro. Nope. Too late. Dude, there's some good kills at this festival. There's a dude that gets his head like just ripped off, like twisted and twisted, and just pulling it. That was great. There's another dude that's like on the ground, they like bending backwards and they're just ripping at his neck and blood and ribs or rib cage and one of the dudes like getting bear hugged so hard that his gut starts spilling out. Like that it was good shit. It was a lot of gore here. They should have had him shit out of his head. That's part of the movie.

SPEAKER_01

Shit is guts out. Just have it oozing out through his pant leg. Just cut to the foot, cut to the foot. Make him shake his leg. Make him shake his a little bit harder.

SPEAKER_02

And then it turns into a slasher for a minute because one of these things ends up at Jim and Carol's house. Right. For no reason. Everything else is going on. They're like, oh, we gotta get we gotta go get Carol.

SPEAKER_01

They're like, Ronnie, come on, man. We're all going to the party. We're gonna get some people there. We're gonna get those chicks, there's food. We'll go to the party. And Ronnie's like, I don't know, guys. I'm not feeling it. All the while. He's sneaking over to Carol's place.

SPEAKER_02

He's got his eyes on one. And yeah, Carol traumatizes the kid probably by locking it in the closet. He doesn't know what's going on. Smart move, though. Smart. But that kid's gonna be pissed. You run around with the kid in your arms. Now that's a bad move. Glass, all that stuff. Put it in the protected room. This thing breaks into Carol's house and she stabs the ever-loving shit out of it. Loved it. She's a stab. Jim almost got it in a minute. Yeah. Sprays it with like some cleaning solution. Drain cleaner. You know, to blind it and then just stabs the fucking shit out of it over and over and over and over again. I want to say when Jim comes home, so actually, then like there's another there's something comes in the door, or she there's something at the door, and she opens it and almost stabs Jim. Like that would have been a good stuff. Jim stops her. And then I think they get the baby. And doesn't Jim say something? Does he call the baby Johnny? No, he's that the baby's name. He said, Where's so-and-so? Yeah, he did ask. He said something like where's Johnny? And she's like, Oh, he's safe. Like Jake. I think it could have been. I didn't know if this was a uh like Diana Russini, Mike Frabel situation where Carol's really been getting it with Johnny. Oh, I don't need it to be and they named their baby after its real father. Like King in the Hill? King of the Hill. Yeah, John Redcorn. Definitely. Yeah. I I I didn't know because we commented like, how did Jim land Carol? You know, did you get Johnny Jr.? Well, Johnny's Johnny's really the one landing Carol. Yeah. Jim's the biggest cuck in town, I guess. So after the festival movie ends, where the next day it looks like a battlefield. There's the smoke machines. Somebody let the smoke machine off late because there's like no smoke. The merry-go-round just emits like pink smoke out of nowhere that they walk through. He ran back to push the pink smoke button. Exactly. He tried to hit the stop, but he hit the pink smoke. And then, you know, that we think that's about it. You get this overhead shot of all the carnage and all the shit left behind, but then there's one more scene, and it's oh, yeah. There's a reference to, oh, I need to talk to Dr. Drake. Oh, she went back. She left. She's dumb. She's she's part of it. She's part of that machine that's kind of bringing it up. She's part of that corporate machine. Big cannery. Big she's big cannery coming in. She didn't want them to shoot the monsters at first. Remember, she was like on the when they found him in the cave, she's like, Don't shoot them. I'm like, I'm shooting the shit out of this monster.

SPEAKER_01

I'd side-eyed her and just shot me blind.

SPEAKER_02

Oops. Oh, oops. Just went off. I aim for his knee. In case you, Dr. Susan, in case you don't know what happened to Peggy and the other girl, the tent, that's what it wants to do to you. So we're gonna shoot this thing. Yeah, Peggy's at the hospital about to give birth. Is this the same day? Is she growing more humanoid baby inner tuterus in 48 hours? I think it's within a week. I think it was just like they're not like they're like they're not like nine months later. So I just assume no ultrasound, no, but they do grow faster. That's the thing that accelerates the development of the salmon. Right. There you go. So she yeah, just things growing inside of her and then you know burst out. She's about to give birth, except it comes out of her belly and not. Did you see her eyes like turned yellowish gray too? It's like the whole thing. It's a chest burster, man. Just like just like alien. This thing comes out of its hurt chest. It's a uterus burst. It is fucking gross and bloody and squealing. It's nasty looking, but really well done effect, though. It looks practical effect on it. It was great.

SPEAKER_01

Townsfolk in the background, you don't see them there waiting with their two by fours and random sticks.

SPEAKER_02

So that is humanoids from the deep. And now we have to have. You would think that they would have. It was right there. Yeah, like Peggy with her newborn, and like the townspeople want to kill this thing, and she's like, It's my baby, you can't have it. Oh no, it's it's in secret.

SPEAKER_01

And like the 20 years later, Peggy's off in the woods near the river or something, and her son is uh Oh no, Peggy.

SPEAKER_02

Oh Peggy dead, Peggy died during this. Okay, so what happens is this thing grows in one year, how much how much it would grow in 20 years. It overpowers its captors and it escapes. That's what happens, and it's right there. Back to breeding easiest writing. Right. Yeah, you know, we could fly you could do flashbacks to the other stuff that you guys wanted to see in this movie that we didn't get. Right. Anyway, that's it. That's humanoids from the deep. It's like species, basically. It accelerates, you know. Yeah. Or splice. Anybody see splice? Anything else? Any other scenes of note? Anything I missed? Quotes? Anything that you liked that I didn't mention? Nah, you got it. Nah. For an 80-minute movie, we packed a lot of this episode. It's a monster. It's a monster. Sounds like our friend when he's playing poker about his whole cards that he has. What did you think about the the end? Did it stick for you? I liked it. It was a fun, it was it felt very in tone with the movie, right? It felt like it had to have this like, okay, we're gonna give you one more shock at the end, right? Right. Yeah. Is this movie more topical today if it were to come out than it was in the 80s? Because we're so much more environmentally aware now. No, like if they made this movie today, it's like a data center wants to be built on the shoreline. That's true. And people no, you can't feel like late 80s and early 90s were the times where you heard about these spotted owls and like like it was bigger on like we can't cut down the rainfall. Environmental stuff nowadays it feels like it's gone out of 70s, 80s, 90s. Like so, like I feel like we hit the plateau, and we're now like, eh. Yeah, yeah, but it's me, snuff. Like we're we're past the point of no return, like yeah, you know you used to be like we need to leave it better than the way we found it for our children, and now we're like, yeah, fuck our kids. We had to deal with it now. They can. Fuck them kids. Here's a question for you guys. I'm sorry, I didn't prep you guys for any any questions um for this, but you're forced to spend 30 minutes in the water at one of two places. Are you picking the beach of Noyo here in Humanoids from the Deep or Amity Island from Jaws?

SPEAKER_01

How far in the water? How far from shore?

SPEAKER_02

How far in the water, that's a good question. And counterpoint, there's one Frank. There's only one Jaws. You have to stand, you have to stand waist deep in water. Are we by ourselves or for 30 minutes? Can I say on Amity Island? Jaws is too big coming in. On Amity Islands, most shark attacks happen in three feet of water or less.

SPEAKER_01

But this was a 40-foot shark.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, you gotta be neck deep in the water. Neck deep. Are we alone? Jerry Jerry gets attacked like he's in knee deep water and gets yanked under. Yeah. Are you what, Justin? Are we alone? Yes or no? Are we with everyone else? Do we have cover? Because I'm cutting somebody and running. Well, that's the thing. Like with jaws, when they like all get in the water, like it's only the kit and their boy gets it because there's so many odds. You're playing the odds. With if you're like you and you and your girlfriend are in the water, like it's gonna be one of you two or both. Yeah, I'm playing Amity. I'm doing Amity. I'll know. I'll know what's gonna be. Oh, that kid needs help. I'm out of here. Just me, my girlfriend. Yeah. But like if a humanoid gets you, you know you can bash its brains in and get away. That's true. But Great White Shark is like But you're in its element. I've heard of people being like a shark bit me and I punched it and it went away. Like, no, it's that's true. You punch it in the nose. No, but yeah, uh yeah, but I mean, that's I'm not taking chances. How many people really surviving that versus just get bit in half by a big ass shark? A lot. No, I don't know. I don't know. Unknowable. Unknowable. Did the fire in the water at the end of the festival like did that kill the ones in the water? Because we hear a lot of squealing. Or is it like every other action movie where there's like fire in the water and our hero swims under it to get the bigger?

SPEAKER_01

Realistically, I think they would have gotten away, but I think it's supposed to show that.

SPEAKER_02

They're lit up and they can't get the yeah, the gasoline off them because you know. Okay. Unanswerable, unknowable question, I thought. 50 gallons of gas isn't that much when it's on the floor. It wasn't like the whole inlet was on fire. It was like just patches. I'm like, if you swam like 20 feet to the right, you're you're fine now. Shake it off.

SPEAKER_01

Stop dropping swim. Dump back under the water.

SPEAKER_02

Right? That's what I do when bees are flying at me in the pool.

SPEAKER_01

I'm like the top on fire.

SPEAKER_02

What kill was best? If you say any of the nine dogs, I will end you. The head rip off. Yeah, that's what I got. The decapitation was so good. Really, really good. That was that was easily, I think, the best one. Could you escape this? Where did our victims go wrong here? They didn't run far away from that water when that like you gotta get away from that pier. You don't like did it feel like nitpick here. Did it feel like they were just looping the same screams over and over at the end? Because it was annoying. It felt like the fucking carnival music was still playing the whole fucking time. Like, it would be it would be. I say like that that played for like 12 straight minutes. I'm like, fuck it. I would totally survive. If I knew some shit like that, whoever this Oscar-winning composer is needs to turn that shit off. So people were missing, dogs are dead, people are dying, like known to be dying. Would you go to the fair at the end? Like, or would you be like, I'm gonna sit this one out?

SPEAKER_01

Something but no one knew. There was no part in the movie where we're like, okay, guys, there's shit going on. We're gonna trick it.

SPEAKER_02

There's been a shark attack on the beach on 4th of July weekend. Are you still going to the beach? Hell no. All those motherfuckers and jaws still went to the beach. Yeah, not going to the beach. But nobody was in the water and they're like, hey, why don't you get in the water? Get in. And one guy gets in and then all of them get in. I just put on some sunscreen, man. I mean, people are creatures of habit. If they if they've been living in that town and that's their annual, their big annual event, like for 75 years, like those people are going. All right. Yeah. But if I was at the fair, I'm getting out of there totally with the city. I'm grabbing a weapon. Yeah. Making something. I would have fucking ran. Fuck that. I'm bringing my gun. I'll always remember you. I'm bringing my gun. I think, I mean, obviously, if if if the if the word got out that, like, hey, you can shoot these things and they'll die, like, all you need are you needed the townspeople from Dawn of the Dead, and they'd have killed all these humanoids. The ones like in Dawn of the Dead, like after they leave Philly and they go out in the suburbs, and all the all the hill people are armed up and they're just mowing down zombies in the open fields. Drinking beers. Drinking beers. And like, I mean, those these are the guys you needed here at the festival. Oh, they're there. They're there. Well, they're not sure. Yeah, well, they should have brought their dogs. Did you like it when Hank and Johnny had like a connection at the end there? Johnny saved his life, yeah. Yeah. Hank was about to get pulled under from one of those. Because Hank was trying to save a child. So you try to give Hank his hero. They try to give Hank like, hey, he's not a total shithead. He saved a kid.

SPEAKER_01

Fuck you, Hank. Did kill the dog. At least in part, kill the dog. You jumped me and whip my ass. Fuck you. You're on your own, man. You backhanded me once. You pimp slapped me one time.

SPEAKER_02

Who was the dumbest character? Everybody. A lot of dumb characters. I think I think it's Susan. She claims to be a genius, the scientist. I think she's living in the city. So like if you live, you're not going to be able to do it. But she inadvertently caused this. She works for big cannery, like you said. She comes up with the technol the genetic modification thing to put DNA in fish to make them bigger. It's just like probably putting steroids in chickens to make them bigger, right? This is like the earlier version of that. Yeah. And people frown upon that with the chickens and stuff and the unsafe living conditions and chicken coops. This is like the earlier version of that. Except they turn it. Except what if the chickens turned into fucking humanoids and started killing everybody? I'm gonna say Deke. Deke was the dumbest character. Yeah. Making his kids, reach down into that netting, yelling at his kid about not putting gas in the winch motor. Bro, this ain't my boat. Yeah, that's your job. What do I look like? Why am I out here? Ah shit, why me? Right. That's my boat. Alright. Yep. Yeah. Deke's a good one. Susan? You ain't eye for Susan? She's so many. So many people chose from it. That makes her on paper smart, not in real life smart. Okay. Gore score. Scale one to ten. What's your gore score for human oil? At least eight. At least I was an eight. Yeah. I mean, there's heads ripped off. There's huge parts of faces ripped off.

SPEAKER_01

There's shoulders ripped off. Essays, kids getting it, dogs getting it. No one's safe in this movie. There's a gooey dog pile. Goo.

SPEAKER_02

Goo. I I got you got the kid that gets killed and all the blood that fills the screen up. Yeah. Totally mangled dogs, blood from other dead dogs, half a face ripped off. Guy in the tent with his back ripped out ripped out. Multiple gunshot wounds throughout with the humanoids, which are blood, not like some fake green shit. Stabbing a bag. Real blood. Big old butcher in a big thing. Axe into the humanoid's head. Guys gets his guts ripped out while being bear hugged. Head twisted off, decapitated. Dude on the merry-go-round just going around the merry-go-round with his neck, his throat slid open, his head halfway ripped off. Another guy being bent backwards with his back and the side of his neck and his ribs getting ripped out. Bent over. DJ gets his chest ripped off, exposing his whole rib cage. One of the humanoids with their head bashed in with a board. The one Carol stabs about 40 fucking times. Chest burster at the end. I was thinking nine. I could go to a nine. I was almost like at least an eight. I was thinking like I was like, all right, is this a ten? It's a lot. It does not have terrifier cutting a girl in half from taint to teeth. And it's cutaway. It's the cutaway stuff. Like it's not like let's go. Like Dog Soldiers was we have three tens. We have Terrifier, Dog Soldiers, and Planet Terror. And Planet Terror is a ton, a ton, a ton of stuff, but also it's cartoonish, but has a ton. Dog Soldiers, I think, is the closest one to this, where it's a ton, a ton, a ton, a ton of blood. It's a ton of like you know, stabbings and like real stuff. Okay. Terrifiers is a completely different level. Like I think if we get if we had like Terrifiers, the ones like you gotta top that one. This one's closer to Dog Soldiers, but we did give that one a 10. Because Terrifier was like two, like a two minute scene of somebody sawing somebody in half, right? Right.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And then they should they cut back to that. Or they walk past that thing like five years.

SPEAKER_01

My only thing is that this movie wasn't goofy. A little too goofy. It was too goofy. Yeah. It wasn't and it just wasn't good enough. I mean, there's a lot of blood, guts, and gore. Where do you land? Eight, eight and a half. I'll do I'll do a solid eight. If you guys both do nine, I was thinking talked into a nine.

SPEAKER_02

I don't think it's a point. There's just a lot in it. Yeah. So nine? Yeah. Alright.

SPEAKER_01

Nine it is. Nine's high. Nine is very high considering all the other movies we've done where someone sawed her own head off while looking dead at the camera.

SPEAKER_02

But that was like one of the three violent things that happened in that movie, though. But yeah. Let's see here. So I don't think I had to. I think we talked about a lot of the fun facts. And the not so fun facts. And the not so fun facts with this one. One that I didn't mention yet, Steve Johnson is one of the stunt men in the humanoid suits. He was very, very good at reacting to being shot that he's the one they used for any scene where a humanoid is shot. So it's like the same one, just gets in a different suit. He got paid an extra $25 a day, probably for that. And Joe Dante of Gremlin's fame, he turned down the opportunity to direct this movie. Not a bad move. Barbara Peters wasn't the first choice, but Gremlins, I mean, gets kind of gooey and you know gross at that point, too. So I could see him doing a well good job with that. I think it would be better as far as like Sirius goes. Yeah. It'd be a family. Horror Hall of Fame. Barbara Peters know. Second unit director, maybe though? No. The call in. Just kidding. Killer. Are these humanoids mortal Hall of Famers? Mortal monsters, mortal buildings. I don't yeah. I think if if they would have made a series out of this, we'd have a case. Yeah. If there's some lore they should have made like if it turned into like Predator or something. We need to look it up, like why they didn't just like run with the ball. Maybe it didn't make enough money and they're like not enough interesting. Scared everybody off. Yeah. Yeah. Or maybe they're like, you know, if we take all the sex and violence out of this, it's not gonna be good. Right. I mean, but like seriously, there was critters and ghoulies, and there's all kinds of things that didn't deserve like four sequels that got them. So I'm like, what happened here? Yeah. Are there any are any of our heroes or protagonists Hall of Famers here? Jim, Carol, Hall of Fame Chip player. No, not definitely not Hank. No, none of them. No. All right. It can be it can be a fun movie without any award accolades. It doesn't need the accolades. Yeah, no, not everything has to be a hall. I mean, we hall of fame's a high bar, but any props that you want for them from this movie? Anything that's kind of cool to have? Anything that could be Hall of Fame worthy? I couldn't really nothing to me really stuck out, but I'm you know, I I could see myself starting to drink a beer out of a coffee mug. Not pouring the beer in the coffee mug, but putting the can in the case. And just drinking the can like it's got a handle on it. What about the salmon video? Could that go in our video room?

SPEAKER_01

I I don't remember that part, but in the 80s there were these things. I don't know if you guys have ever seen one, and I I have one at home. And it's like a leather, it's leather, and there's a like a tube on top and a tube on bottom, and you put the beer through there and it has this leather strap, so it has like a mug type thing to it. But you see, yeah. Well, no, it's like a leather cousin, because it's not it doesn't, it's just the the two loops, so it doesn't really keep the can warm. Oh, it's like you a handle, yeah. It's like a weird sex strap. It's got a red rubber ball in the middle of it.

SPEAKER_02

It keeps getting caught on my nuts. See? Stealing Mike's joke. Let's see. That's that's it for the categories, guys. All right. Final thoughts on humanoids from the deep. Charlie, I'll start with you. Classic.

SPEAKER_01

It's cool. Classic. I like it. It has always been a pretty bad movie, but I like it. It's a fun ride.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Justin? All right. Let's do a letterbox style. So there's five stars here. Rewatchab. It's I could see this being something I'd want to show someone else, right? Like I can't sit with this in my own head and just, you know, not. So it's got a little bit of rewatchability. Let's go two out of five on letterbox style. But it was fun. So a four out of ten. Yeah, four out of ten. Which is that's low. So you're like with the popcorn. That's what that's the pop tomato, you know. Right.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I had fun watching it, but not every not is it great. Some crappy movies are just rewatchable. I can't explain it. There's magic there. Right.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Fave shit. I like I like when movies can check off a number of boxes. So that's like why the thing is probably it's definitely my top four, but is maybe my favorite or number two favorite. If I if I had to split hairs, it's up there. But the thing checks so many boxes. And this one, it's a call classic, but it's like if you like creature features, check that box. If you like body horror, check that box. If you like exploitation, check that box. Like, there's a lot of different if you like social commentary, environmental movies. If you're against you know, big cannery, check that box. Is that what we're calling? That's what you're calling. That's the girl. That's what they call it. Big cannery. No, that's the lady in the tent. She had some big canneries. Oh, yeah. Rest in peace. Oh, wait. Oh, wait. That's the cannery that was. Yeah, that's what I was talking about. Oh, big can big cannery. Well, I'm on the wrong side of that discussion, then. I'm out. I'm resigning. I'm resigning. Pro cans. Pro cans. Yeah, you're gonna get me in trouble. Why are you hanging out with those guys? Vote yes on prop cans. But yeah, I mean, but it checks a number of boxes. Like if you like a like if you like any of those things, like you can check those boxes. So I I think that one is why I like this one so much because you get a little bit of variety of a bunch of stuff. It's definitely a cult classic. If you haven't seen this and you've listened this far, well, sorry we spoiled it all, but go watch it. Go watch it. This is it's a fun watch, it's an easy watch. It's 80 minutes, and like I don't know, 10 of those minutes are credits. So it's an easy, fun watch. Pretty underappreciated. Like, like we said, they didn't make a sequel of this, they made a TV movie, but there's no sequel, there's no franchise, there's you know, it's just underappreciated. It's not one that's mentioned a lot, it's not one that's in the you know, horror lexicon or that's brought up all the time. But we fix that. We're fixing that one movie at a time, guys. Yeah, I mean, Jaws walked so humanoids from the deep could run, you know.

SPEAKER_01

You're welcome for our service. Exactly.

SPEAKER_02

We're out here doing the lower sport. So all right, that's it. Humanoids from the deep. Anything else, guys? No, no. Do we want to let's like compare these guys to like the what were they called? The crawlers from the descent. Like, what are these like what kind of what advantages and disadvantages? Obviously, big disadvantages, exposed brain, right? Giant, giant weak point. But these things are strong as shit, right? So these what we give is seven out of ten on strength for these things.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You're building a class D and Well, what's a 10? What's a 10 on the strength meter? Would you say they're stronger than Jason? No. Okay. I would say yes. Jason takes an axe to the head. He takes Manhattan. He takes a well, he's just not killable. There's a difference. I mean, Jason gets a machete through his head and then still goes on his killing. He does squish some heads too, like Jason does, doesn't he? I mean, these things you can shoot them and they die. He definitely like as far as like vulnerability, they got a high like their yeah, their vulnerability is like a one. The constitution level is like protection or something, but I mean, but their aggression level or whatever is is high. All right. So this is Jason never tried to rape nobody. That's true. Jason was asexual. So it was Michael, I think. A sexual what? Tyrannosaurus? Yeah, well played. Thanks. Good callback. That's it. I mean, I got nothing else. But yeah, they're stealth-wise. They're not like they're kind of clunky and stuff. But yeah, when they when they went to the caves and they find the one that's they didn't even go in the caves, and the ones on shore, is that one just chilling? It's just kind of good. He's like kind of naked, and he was taking a nap. You see like the head pop up, like hey.

SPEAKER_01

I think he was supposed to be on guard duty. He fucked up, fell asleep.

SPEAKER_02

You just see that one's head like pop up out of the sand. He's like, Oh, hey, I guess I gotta fight you now. Like he just did seem very uh Power Rangers-y, where it was like they're fighting this big old thing after he gave you know Peggy her spa day with that seaweed rap. And then he's like, I'm a I'm on, I'm going on break. One of these mini episodes, I'm gonna bring in like a DD like character chart where you have to build a class or whatever, and we're gonna go through and like maybe ranks 10 of these like monsters and whatever.

SPEAKER_01

You can't see my face, but I'm looking at Justin like nerd, and don't make me do homework, nerd.

SPEAKER_02

You guys know I like ideas, but I don't like to execute, so I think you're pretty safe. You're not gonna don't worry, guys. It's not gonna happen. We'll workshop it. Okay, workshop. That's it. All right, whose turn is it next? Next turn is Charlie.

SPEAKER_01

Uh my turn.

SPEAKER_02

All right.

SPEAKER_01

So the toughest thing about doing this podcast for me, other than homework, which isn't tough at all since I don't know it, is there's so many good movies out there. So many movies I want to do.

SPEAKER_02

That's that's a blessing. I know I've been waiting to do this one for like seven months. Really?

SPEAKER_01

We had to earn, we have to earn the deep cuts, is what it is. Like, I don't want to miss out on picking this one because somebody else picks it. But I wanted to stay in the same vein as Humanoys from the Deep. Okay. 80s, Monster, People Disappearing, and I went with 1984, Chud.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's on my list. That was gonna be like I'm a room. I was gonna do that like two movies from now. It's Daniel Stern. Yeah, Daniel Stern. Daniel Stern, it's on Prime, I think, right now. Chud was it's out. I have my next pick, and then Chud was my pick after that. Yeah, but that's your pick.

SPEAKER_01

Like if you want to see before they were stars movie.

SPEAKER_02

This is a good one. This one is full of loaded. Okay. It is loaded, yes. Now this is called Chubb. Chud. Chud Duh. Chud Duh. Right? Duh. The H is for humanoid. Oh, it's like cannibal humanoid. Cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers. Underground dwellers. It's an acronym. Everybody loves a good acronym. C dot H dot U dot D dot. Yep. It's an acronym. It's fun. Nice. Rated R 128 Minutes. John Hurd. John Hurd is a John Hurd, the dad from Home Alone. Oh, I think. And Daniel Stern, one of the bad guys from Home Alone. John Goodman's in this movie. John Goodman. All the Johns are in this one, apparently. Yeah. Patricia Richardson, she's the mom on Home Improvement. Okay. We'll see a lot of faces you recognize. All right. We'll talk about it in a week. In a week. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Chud is next. Is H for Humanoid? You said? Yeah. Cannibalistic humanoid underground compeller. Yeah, humanoids. That's putting pressure on me to come up with a humanoid movie for my next movie. There is one, I think, from like the 60s called The Humanoid. Yeah. Come out. So you can pick that. Okay. There you go. All right, guys. Thank you for listening to the All Guts So Gory podcast. If you like what we do here, please leave us a rate and review wherever you get your podcasts from. SPEAKER_01

Ten.

SPEAKER_02
