 There's a difference between honesty and cruelty — and the people who taught me that weren't therapists or coaches. This week on Thin Wall Diaries, we talk about Principle 5: Protect Connection.

You ever watch somebody tell the truth and completely destroy a person at the same time? Like, they weren't lying. Every word was accurate, but by the time they were done, the other person was smaller than when they walked in. I grew up watching that. I grew up inside that. And for a long time, I thought that's just what honesty looked like. That if it didn't sting, it wasn't real. That directness meant you got to skip the part where you gave a damn about the other person. I was wrong. There's a difference between honesty and cruelty, between directness and humiliation, between leading people and just needing to be right. And the people who taught me that difference, they weren't therapists. They weren't leadership coaches with a TED talk. One of them was a man we call Uncle Maybe Illegal. And the other one, the one who taught me by doing the opposite, was my mother. Welcome back to Thin Wall Diaries. I'm your host, Trailer Park Oracle, raised in chaos and built for connection. And today we're talking about principle five. Protect connection. Now let me tell you about Uncle Maybe Illegal. He got the name for reasons nobody ever fully explained to me. I could guess though. And I learned early not to ask too many questions. What I can tell you is that he was the kind of man who filled a room without trying, big laugh, bigger opinions, and absolutely zero patience for nonsense. He would tell you the truth every time without apology. But here's the thing, and this took me years to understand. He never told the truth at you. He told it to you. Like there was a difference in direction. Like the words were aimed at the problem, not at your chest. Now, I remember one time I was maybe 12, maybe a little bit younger. I had done something stupid. I don't even remember what it was. I do remember I was bracing for it, because in my house, getting caught doing something stupid meant getting taken apart, piece by piece, in front of whoever happened to be around. That was my mother's style. She had this gift for finding the exact thing that would make you feel the most ashamed. Not just about what you did, about who you were. She could take a single mistake and turn it into evidence of everything wrong with you, your character, your future, your worth. And she'd do it calmly. It wasn't rage, it was precision. I spent a lot of years thinking that was strength, that being able to cut someone down without raising your voice, it was some kind of superpower. But back to Uncle Maybe illegal. He found out what I'd done before my mother did. And instead of letting it play out the way it always played out, instead of letting me get dismantled, he pulled me aside. Just the two of us. And he said, You know that was stupid, right? And I said, Yeah. He said, You gonna do it again? I said, no. And he said, Good, now go fix it. That was it. No audience, no dissection, no making me feel like a stain on the family name. He told me the truth. He held me accountable, and he did it in a way that left me intact. I didn't have language for it then, but what he did, what he was doing every single time, was protect the connect the connection between him and me. Between me and my own sense of self, between the mistake and the person who made it. And I don't say that with hate. I've done a lot of work to get to a place where I can say it plainly without it utterly destroying me. But the truth is, she used honesty as a weapon. She used directness as a way to control. The difference between these two people wasn't how much they cared. I fully believe that my mother cared in her own way. The difference was in what they were trying to protect. Uncle Maybe Illegal was trying to protect me. She was trying to protect her position. Here's what I've learned from carrying both of those experiences into every room I've ever led. The most dangerous leaders aren't the ones who lie. They're the ones who tell the truth without caring what it does to the person on the other side. Because here's what happens when you lead that way. When you're brutally honest and you lean into the brutal part, people stop bringing you the real stuff. They start managing you. They tell you what you want to hear. They hide the problems until the problems are too big to hide. You think you're building a culture of accountability, you're actually building a culture of fear. And fear looks like compliance right up until the moment it doesn't. I've been in rooms where a leader have said something honest, and I've watched three people quietly decide to leave the company. Not that day, but the decision got made in that moment. I've watched a parent say something true to a kid, and seeing that kid start building a wall that took decades to come down. Honesty without care isn't a virtue. It's just aggression with good PR. So, what does it actually mean to protect connection? It means you understand that the relationship is the infrastructure. Everything else, the feedback, the accountability, the hard conversations, the growth. All of it runs on the connection. If you blow up the infrastructure to deliver the message, that message doesn't land. It just leaves rubble. Protecting connection has three moves. Move one, separate the person from the behavior. What Uncle Maybe Illegal did instinctively, what took me years to learn consciously, is that you address what someone did without making a verdict on who they are. That was a bad call, is different from you always make bad calls. One is feedback, the other is just a sentence. Move two. Choose your audience. My mother's corrections were always public in front of others. Not always, but most of the time. And that wasn't accidental. Public correction isn't about helping the person, it's about signaling to everyone else. Real accountability happens in private. Recognition happens in public. If you've got that backwards, you need to check your motive. Move three. Leave them with the agency. Uncle Mabel ended every hard conversation the same way. Now go fix it. Not I'll fix it for you. Not you're too broken to fix it. He handed the agency back. He said, in effect, I believe you're capable of handling this. That belief, that small act of returning someone's dignity, is what makes the difference between feedback that builds and feedback that breaks. Protecting connection doesn't mean you go soft. It doesn't mean you avoid hard truths. It means you deliver hard truths in a way that keeps the person in the game. That keeps them wanting to be in the game. Now, leadership without ego means you're not delivering feedback to feel powerful. You're delivering it because you actually want the person to grow. So let's make this practical because I know some of you are sitting with a hard conversation you need to have. A team member who's underperforming, a kid who's going sideways, a partner who keeps doing the thing. And you're either avoiding it because you don't want to hurt them, or you're dreading it because you know you tend to go too hard. Here's the framework in action. At work. Before you give critical feedback, ask yourself one question. Am I trying to help this person? Or am I trying to relieve my own frustration? If it's the second one, wait. Not forever, but wait until you can answer the first one honestly. Then, when you do have the conversation, private setting, specific behavior, clear impact, and end with what you need going forward. Not a list of everything they've ever done wrong, not a character assessment. One thing. What happened, why it matters, and what needs to change. And then this is the part that people skip. Ask them what they need from you. Because sometimes the underperformance isn't about effort, it's about something you can actually fix at home, especially if you were raised the way I was. The hardest thing about breaking a cycle is that cycle feels normal. My mother's way of correcting me felt like love because it was the only version of correction I knew. It took me a long time to understand that love doesn't require humiliation as proof of its seriousness. If you're a parent or in a relationship or just trying to show up differently than the person who raised you, here's the things to hold on to. You can be honest and kind. You can be direct and gentle. These are not opposites. The people who told you they were opposites were usually people who wanted permission to be unkind. Directness without cruelty means you say the true thing and you stay in the room. You don't drop the grenade and walk out. You say the hard thing, you stay present from what it does to the other person. You let it land. You hold the space where it lands. That's not weakness. That's the hardest thing a person can do. For those of you who are on the receiving end, if you grew up with someone who used honesty as a weapon, first, I see you. That kind of damage is real and it's specific, and it just doesn't go away because you understand it intellectually. But here's what I want you to know: the fact that you're listening to this, the fact that you're thinking about how to do it differently, that matters. You are not your mother's patterns, you are not your father's defaults. You get to choose what you protect. I think about Uncle maybe illegal a lot when I'm in hard conversations now. Not because I'm trying to be him. I'm not. I'm my own person with my own mess. But I think about what he understood that took me so long to learn. That the goal was never to win the moment. The goal was to keep the release the relationship alive long enough for the person to actually change. He wasn't soft, he wasn't a pushover. He would look you dead in the eye and tell you exactly what you did wrong. But he did it in a way that said, I'm not going anywhere. I still believe in you. Now, go handle your business. My mother's corrections ended conversations, and his, they started them. I think that's the whole thing right there. Are your hard truths ending conversations or starting them? Are you protecting the connection? Or are you just protecting your need to be right? Because you can be right and still lose the person. You can be accurate and still do damage. You can tell the truth and still be cruel. Protect connection means you choose the relationship over the moment every time, even when, especially when the moment is hard. Well, that's principle five.
