Brett Hull is up at Gozzer Ranch hanging out with Russ Courtnall and Sheldon Souray this week. The guys talk with The Hammer about the first time they each met him, and what drew all of them to Gozzer. Hully talks about some of the top players in the league now. Hully and Rusty talk about how they met their wives while playing hockey and Sheldon tells the guys what great influences they've been on his life. The guys talk about getting to play for an original six team, and how lucky Rusty was to play for three of them. Hully also shares with Sheldon why he stayed in St. Louis as long as he did. Sheldon tells a few stories about how his dad got him into hockey as a kid and how it led to his dad reuniting with his siblings later in life. The guys talk about the difference between the teams flying commercials and flying charter.

The first time I met Sheldon, um, he won't well, you might remember this, but when we had the first outdoor outdoor game was in Edmonton, and I was on the alumni for Montreal. Yep.

Jesus. It was the first ever outdoor game. Yeah. It was the first ever. So Montreal first class, all the way, obviously. The McDonald's, I think. And it's steak and lobster and all the old timers. We're there, and then in comes the Montreal Canadians, and this stud walks in with his ex at the time or time, yeah. And my wife went, Holy shit, who is that? But that's the first time I met Sheldon, and then later on we met in LA.

I mean, another guy, Hall of Famer, who took me under his wing when I met him. We still play in Chicago with Reed Simpson. Yeah, Rito is an awesome guy, yeah. And um, and I met Holly, and I just remember like this is Brad Hall, man. And um, you're just so good to me, dude.

Isn't it unreal? Incredible, and it's all over the world now. Yeah, it's not like it's just like hey, oh, we got a place here in uh Idaho or Vegas. No, we were it's all over the world.

I went with my younger brother, Bruce. We're at the member guest at Sherwood, and and one of the Gauzer members. Hold on.

But the eyes. Yeah, the eyes. Uh so we go to this party at Sherwood, and they've got this board up with the map. And Gretz is like looking at this board with Janet, and he's, whoa, how about this? How about that? And later that summer we went to Kakyo, which is a just another discovery property. Absolutely, in Hawaii, the big island. And I still had the business card in my pocket. I called the guy, and uh the next week we were up here and we bought, and that was back in 08. And I think Wayne had already bought in in uh a couple months before us, and then Doug Waite was here first. Yeah, uh Gretz. You was here first, yeah. Dougie Waite was first, and then it was uh it was Gretz, then me, then I think you.

Yeah, and so Wayne. When was Carbo? Carbo Carbon came with Brandon. My wife and I had just started dating, and Wayne goes, Holly, you gotta you gotta come up to this place, Goser Ranch. In Idaho and play with, yeah, he goes, play with me and the uh member guests. And I'm like, okay. And uh so I go up, and uh I had already uh ditched my ex-wife, and I was with my upgrade future wife, the best woman I ever met. And so he goes, Come on, we'll play in the member guests, and we finished second.

Anyway, so then I I call my wife Darcy at that point, and I go, Can can you get a couple days off? And she was a Dallas firefighter working for the Dallas Stars, working for the uh in the tent. Remember that tent? No, yeah. And uh that's incredible. And so I go, Can you get a couple days off and come up? And she goes, Yeah, and so she gets and she drops off at the at the lake, and they bring her across at night. And so we have a uh some cocktails, shocker. And uh in the morning I wake up and I go, Come on, let's go. And so we grab the cart and I go, Hey, what do you think about this uh lot? And she goes, Oh my god, this is unreal. And all of a sudden, these horses start running across the field down across, remember across from where I lived?

And she's like, Oh my god. I go, Well, I go, what do you think? She goes, Oh, I'm a I love it. I good because I bought it yesterday. Yeah, I go, you had nine months to build a house.

Well, when Sheldon came up, yeah, he was I was trying to mentor him a little bit and said, just buy a cottage, just buy a cottage. And before he got on the plane, he bought it. Also a little scary thing. When he bought the best place on property and uh stand craft.

Well, he also he took me on my first uh he introduced us to a business guy, introduced me to a business guy. And God bless right. I gotta say that Rusty first invited me to a dinner um in California where Wayne was at. And and we'll talk about dark in a second, but uh all your buddies from Sherwood and Wayne were there, and he invited me as around Christmas. And um I think I was playing for the Oilers at the time, maybe just signed with the Oilers.

And um Yeah, I used to fucking get out of the way of your shot all the time. Like, oh, you got to block shots. I'm like, I'm I wouldn't block it. I was blocking that.

My dad met Gretz at this at this dinner, yeah. And uh, I remember getting in the car, we were driving away, and my dad, you know, a big truck driver, he he goes like this and had a tear in his eye. He goes, Son, he goes, That's the greatest thing that's ever happened in my life. I met Wayne Gretzky. And that's because of this guy.

It was uh it was we used to have this really we used to have this gentleman's lunch uh for Christmas, like we do every morning here, right? And everybody brought a bottle of wine, right? And we'd all and you you invite your friends, and we'd sit around, drink wine, uh, and have a great Italian meal at that place. It was like a four-hour lunch, and Gretz was there, and we all know Gretz is the greatest human being ever, ever, right?

And and you know what the greatest part about Wayne is is that there's more than one Wayne. Like we now we're friends with John Elway, yeah, who is also one of the greatest human beings ever. You got Coach Peyton, yeah, one of the greatest guys ever. But even like us, right? We're like, we're not, we are who we are, and we did great, and we had we had great careers, and we did, but like we are like like I love Sheldon Soray and Russ Cournell as much as I love Wayne Gretzky. I mean, we are our alum, I guess us a brother, it's like a brotherhood. Yeah, like I and I talk to my wife all the time. I go, I love fucking Sheldon Surrey so much. Thank you, buddy. Oh my god.

I know this. When I was going through like my problems that when I was up here, I mean, you were two of the guys. It was the hockey family who said, yo, dude, you you know, smart enough. We see we see what we see. And you know, I like I owe our group so much because uh I think we were close enough at the time. Look, we all have a good time up here, right? Absolutely. There's no question, this is where we come and this is a safe place for us, and we absolutely love it. Um but there was also in my situation where you guys sat me down and said, Hey, buddy, like this ain't working, it's not working for you. I'm worried about you, right? And so we had that relationship where I wasn't like, you know, Brett Hall's telling me that it's like, man, he's on to something. When Wayne's telling me that, when Russ is telling, and and it just it meant a lot. It helped me change my life, you know, for um as much fun as as we have up here. We are really are a brotherhood. And Wayne told me to come up here originally, and I was living in Malibu. Remember, I seen him at Chelly's Cup Party, and he's like, Shelly, you're playing with the orders now, you got to come up to Court Lane. I go, that's right below Alberta. Like, no, I'm in Malibu. He's like, Oh no, come on. And then I met Melbourne at a party with Randy. He said, I'm going up this weekend. Russ had already told me about it. And I came up on Friday and on Sunday I bought, and I'll tell till the day I die, I will say it's the greatest investment I ever made. Not because we and we've done good in real estate, whatever in our career, whatever, but it's the greatest investment I made because I have the best friendships with the best people. My world has really opened up besides hockey. Yeah. Um, this place is just has it's it's magic.

It's home, right? It's home. I uh I I just want to interrupt. I so I'm selling real estate. I start working after 08. Um around 2014, I start working for Discovery selling real estate. And so when I'm touring people up here and they see all these families, I said most of us met here. I mean, the hockey guys knew each other a little bit, you know, whether we played together or we didn't, but we have that. But it didn't matter though. We were like it. But we all have these lifelong Gauzer family friends. Yeah, like Tyler Johnson. I never met Tyler Johnson before.

And it's the most incredible place. Like you walk into a room and you're never alone. Ever. Ever alone. It's it's starting a place.

You you you you got great stories, but if you just take what we're doing now and you think of Chaser when he came with Hully, the the heartbeat of the club when I was here and and for many years after was the hockey guys.

And it was because Brendan Morrow, Ray, Brittany, Whitney, Wiz, Jack, Wait.

And it's because um we know what a locker room's like, so it didn't matter if it was the Moors or or this, it didn't matter. Everyone was kind of in because that's how we made it feel.

And I I feel and we brought everyone else in, even if they went, they they weren't in the hockey world, right? But it's like like the parellas and the yeah, dog balls. I mean, every it's like you're you're a part of our family.

You're allowed in until you're dick. Yeah, and you're and then you're out. It's literally one rule, and and we've had a couple who have them last yeah.

Every club has them, but this place you've created a culture which starts with, I think, a guy like Holly Wayne, Holly, and Chaser, who who are funny enough to give you a give you a you know a slap in the right way.

Right, and then the kids grow up, and now you got Chaser's kids, you got Luke, Will, Ben. My kids, I mean your kids six foot five, and like someone'll be uh some outsider will be like hitting on somebody's daughter, yeah, and it'll be like uh no no no. Hey Luke, yeah, put an end to that, and he'll go right up and he'll go, and yeah, we're not we're not doing that, dude. No, I'll slap the piss out of you.

When he looked up ready to shit Eric here for the first time, he was in college, he was running out in the baseball field. Yeah, yeah. I remember like this this kid's like he's got a pretty good workout. He ends up being one of the best, you know, one of the best linebackers ever in years, yeah.

He's stuck, it's so cool. Seattle Seahawks. Yeah, I am a Seahawks, I am a Seahawks gang because I grew up in Vancouver, yeah. So I was all I got was the uh Seattle Seattle Seahawks, and and then now down in uh El Dorado, I got uh Linda Nordstrom and who used to own the Seahawks, and now I'm like, oh my god, this is the greatest thing ever.

It's so cool to watch the kids grow up here. Isn't it unreal? And now they're young adults like my kids, Crosby and Jade, Jews, and when they come back here, they're like they're just instantly they have what we have forever together. It's so great.

Scarlett picked Oregon College because she grew up basically in the Pacific Northwest, right? So she was gonna, you know, Colorado and all these other places, uh Texas, and she chooses Oregon because she's like, Dad, this is how I like this is the simple life I felt like I've had. And it's not simple, don't get me wrong, but we we have it's a different life than L. It's different than LA, it's different than you know, New York or LA's.

Although I'll tell you what, you know, the the new owner of Edmonton, there he's doing a good job. You know, you got you you got the greatest player. I don't know. I get I if I was afraid to say you've you've got Wayne Greske, Mary Lemieux, and then you've got to meet uh McDavid and uh the German kid Dreisidel, and they're on the same team. But that uh that I to me Crosby is yeah, yeah, I think he's unreal, but McDavid's obviously sick, yeah. And then you got uh Colorado, you got uh McKinnon, McKinnon, Michael in Vegas, geez, so many good players. Good, yeah. It's the best sport. I mean it's so good, like I love watching them, yeah, right? Like I like we grew up and we were playing, and it was just like free for all. It's like and then all of a sudden 95 hit, and uh and uh Jacques Lemaire came across, you shut it down, trap, left wing lock, but the the trap.

I'm like, oh really it's I played in Montreal and we played the trap, and God we tied a game against Washington and we got booed. Zero zero.

Yeah, that's the overtime. I used to say that to Ken Hitchcock. I go, oh, zero zero, what a great game. What the hell? I re my ah I remember uh my first game. Well, I'll tell you, I'll my my my first practice day one training camp, and for some reason uh Ken Hitchcock moved the the guys over to the far left wall. And I'm like, that's weird. You you know, usually it's at center ice, right? And the stars had the you you were there, Russia, right? They had the the glass, all the uh people that worked for the stars were in the glass. And uh I stand and I'm standing there and I looked at Garbano, right? Well, one of my best buddies ever.

And I looked and I looked up and my wife was up there and never didn't know who the fuck she was. Like and I go, Carbo, I love her.

I love love at first sight. No way, I go, I love her. And I chased her for four years, and she's been my wife for 20 years. Yeah, best, and uh that's a great story. Yeah, and she ran the the stars club, the the tent, right? And and so she had no idea who I was, and so uh we we were told to go up into the stars club, you know, to you know and make us you know popular.

And so I I go up there and uh I go, hey Darcy, uh I we need some more beer. And she goes, get your own fucking beer. Now you love her even more. I go, I go get beer and I grab them all for the guys, and that was the first time she goes, yeah, you see, he's a dick. No way, 20 years later, she still loves me.

I met my wife in LA, and uh she didn't know I wanted to marry her either. So we were friends over the course of a season. I was playing in Montreal talking on the phone, and we had a mutual friend who was telling her house line, was that house line?

Uh what's that? Like, did they have cell phones? Yeah, but look at how funny rusty is like how when he did not like him.

And then all of a sudden I was sitting with my wife and I was about to uh I had just got off the phone with Jean Bellivo. Wow, and I'm like, okay, I'm gonna sign with uh the Montreal Canadians, and and my wife looks at me and she goes, let's do it. She goes, Well, it'll be awesome. And the phone rings and it's Chris Chelios, and he goes, Hey, Holly, you want to come to Detroit? I go, Yes. I'm like, I dude, I was already, I'm ready for Montreal. Yeah, but I go, really?
