Texas Tech just called Steve Sarkisian’s bluff.

After Sark took a shot at Texas Tech’s Big 12 schedule and claimed Texas could go undefeated against it with its “twos and threes,” Joey McGuire fired back with a real offer: Texas Tech vs. Texas in Week 1. McGuire says he talked to Abilene Christian and Texas State about moving their games, Cody Campbell has explored AT&T Stadium as a neutral-site option, and Texas Tech is even willing to help cover the buyouts to make it happen.

In this video, I break down why Texas Tech’s response is such a smart move, why Texas probably won’t accept the challenge, and how Joey McGuire, Kirby Hocutt and Cody Campbell turned Sark’s comments into a PR win for the Red Raiders and the Big 12.

Texas and Texas Tech are going to play each other this year if Joey McGuire has anything to do with it. Texas Tech is called Texas' bluff, and more specifically, Steve Sarkeesian's bluff. Will the Long Warren's accept and actually make this game happen? It's a brilliant chess move by Texas Tech, either way, and I'll explain here in this video. It is open for business. This is where the Big 12 just means more. Like and subscribe, all that helps. Steve Sarkeesian, Texas head coach, got us started down this road last week when he included Texas Tech on his list of enemies this offseason. He's been taking shots at everybody, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Sark, apparently pretty confident in his squad this year. The Texas Tech comments were at the Houston Touchdown Club. Okay, so he's speaking to folks at the Houston Touchdown Club, and he said, quote, this is a Steve Sarkeesian, still very scorned-lover about missing the college football playoff last year because, in his eyes, they played at Ohio State and were punished for that loss. Never mind the fact they lost to Florida and went nine and three. Quote, there's a team in our state that plays in another conference that has a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and our threes, we could go undefeated, and they'll probably make the college football playoff this year. Well, everyone knows who he was talking about there. Clearly a shot directed at Texas Tech. And there are a lot of things here. One, clearly exaggerated with the twos and threes comment. That's what really blew this up and digs at everybody involved, right? If you just say, hey, we could go undefeated against their schedule, yeah, everyone would know it was talking about Texas Tech, and it would have generated some headlines. But it's going over the top of the exaggeration of the twos and threes that really put the spotlight on this. Because now you're really inviting harsh words back, especially when you're as flawed a messenger as Sark is, because he went 17 and 10 in the Big 12, lost 10 league games in the Big 12 while he was the head coach of Texas. Uh he's also got a pretty flawed logo on his chest to be talking about this, namely, Texas went 13 years without winning the Big 12 with their ones. By the way, Sark was playing with his ones uh when losing 10 Big 12 games, just in case you were wondering. Um, Texas went 13 years with their ones without winning the Big 12 before finally getting it on the way out the door. Uh he does have a point about Texas Tech's soft schedule, though. Being a flawed messenger and a flawed school, to talk about it, Tech does have a pretty soft schedule. They miss BYU, which is not their fault, but the non-con is Abilene Christian, same Houston State and Oregon State. So it's it's not exactly a murderous row. And Texas this year is going to play Ohio State at Tennessee, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, at LSU, at Texas AM. It's a tough schedule. I would not dispute any of that from Steve Sarkeesian. But hitting them with the twos and threes comment really took this up a notch. And Texas Tech has responded beautifully. The actual university football program, they have responded in the perfect, perfect way. Please do subscribe to the channel, push into 35k subs. One click really helps. Thank you. Uh look, I'm reading the seven habits of highly effective people right now, okay? There's a lot of talk in there about being proactive. Don't get just upset about something and sulk and blame other people. And, you know, if Texas Tech wanted to, they could sit around and just say, well, this is not fair. Texas, they're being mean and blah, blah. Instead, they're doing something about it. Texas Tech is being proactive about it. We'll be about solutions. Okay, fine. We don't have a tough non-conference schedule. You think you could come witness league with your twos and threes? Well, play us. Why don't you play us? And we won't just say play us in perpetuity, of which they have all they have also made that point in fairness. Like, we've been trying to play Texas and they won't give in, they won't do that. But Joey Maguire, Kirby Hokut, Cody Campbell have all stepped up to put forth an actual offer here. Okay. And wait till you hear this audio. Uh Joey Maguire talked to the head coaches of Texas State and Abilene Christian. So not only Texas Tech's week one opponent, but Texas's week one opponent, Texas State, and talked to both of those coaches and said, hey, would you guys play each other if we can get Texas to agree to this game? And they're down, they're on board. That's some pretty good stuff from one Joey McGuire. Then the next step of this is all right, where are you going to play the game? Well, Texas Tech doesn't want to give up a home game, right? So they're saying come to Lubbock, but they've also said Cody Campbell is working on Jerry World. So we could get Texas Tech, Texas at ATT Stadium. We're not just going to say, yeah, you got to come to us. We'll go play to neutral. We'll go play at Jerry World. All right, let's do that. And by the way, Texas Tech is offering to pay for it all. They'll pay the buyouts of both games. Texas Tech will pay whatever Texas would have to pay Texas State to get out of that game. Pretty good stuff, my friends. Listen to this clip. This is Joey Maguire explaining some of this, and some of this has evolved since he said this, namely the uh the finances part of it. We now know Texas Tech would pay for all of it. Listen to Joey Maguire, man. This guy is about that action.

Said, there's no way they're talking about us because Sark's a pretty tough guy. His teams are really tough. And I would think that if he was talking about us, that he would call us out. Like he wouldn't just say, you know, just kind of this comment of, well, there's another team in our state. And uh, so I guess he was talking about us. So I've actually talked to Keith Patterson and I've talked to GJ Kenney, and they're willing to take our games, and Abilene Christian will go to Texas State. We'll buy our contract out of Abilene Christian. Um, I'm sure because Texas got a lot of money, they can buy their contract out. But I do know there's a lot of Red Raiders that will help them buy that contract out if they don't want to, and they can come to Lubbock week one, and you know, we can figure out if their twos and threes can win this conference. And you know, I'm not a lot, I know a lot of people are gonna say a lot of stuff about me or about us. We didn't score in the playoffs. That's obvious. You can take a shot at us for that. We didn't score in the playoffs. Last time we played Texas, we got beat 57 to 7, and he played some of his twos and threes. They kicked the crap out of us. But you know, I know he feels really good about his team if he's making those comments. And man, we would love to play the University of Texas week one in Lubbock. I do know that Cody Campbell reached out to Stephen Jones, so they don't want to come to Lubbock, and we're gonna work on trying to get uh ATT week one. So if they want to play week one, then we're ready. We would love to play the University of Texas.

Woo, baby Joey, man. All right, first of all, can we just appreciate in that clip Rich Rod like nodding and laughing the whole time? Like Richrod sitting next to him, like just with this smirk on his face, nodding and laughing. I love that. That was a great addition to the video. But look, this is a brilliant move. Texas is not going to accept this. I mean, look, if they do, that'd be awesome for college football. Like, not just for Texas Tech and Big 12 fans. It would just be awesome for college football, period. That'd be a great game to get, and especially with this buildup to it, right? I mean, this is kind of like some WWE stuff. We're cutting promos, and then you want the payoff, you want the match at WrestleMania. Okay, well, week one could be WrestleMania here. Uh, but I don't think that Texas is going to do this. But now, if you're Texas Tech, you've shown like, hey, we are willing and able. Like they are Texas Tech talks a lot, right? The fans talk a lot. It's a very, very aggressive environment around Lubbock. They are clearly willing with their actions to do whatever it takes to get big games and take their shots, man. You have to respect that. Okay. There are things you may not respect or like about Texas Tech. You've got to respect that. And the brilliant piece of it here is if Texas doesn't play the game, they come away from this looking a little weak. Like, hey, man, you're going to go run your mouth about them, but you won't actually step up to the plate and play them. That's going to create more conversation about it. It puts some actual heat on Texas. Now, you know, does it ultimately matter that much in the grand scheme of things? No. But like it here in this moment, this is the best way you could respond. Take action, clear the path so that it could actually happen, totally call their bluff, and then, hey, if they do happen to play the game, you got your shot. By the way, Texas Tech is doing this while having no idea who their quarterback would be in that game. I mean, it is highly unlikely that it would be Brendan Soresby. I mean, even Joey McGuire was suggesting a three-game suspension for him, right? Um, it is highly unlikely it would be Brendan Sorsby and Will Hammond. I mean, ah, maybe 50-50 at best. They were talking about week three for him coming back in that Houston game. For him to be ready for a week one game against Texas. I don't know, man, coming off that injury, his knee injury. So it might be the Tulsa kid, the Tulsa transfer. Is it Kirk Francis? I'm sorry, I can't remember the dude's name. And that's the point. Like, Texas Tech is willing to step up to the plate and do that when that might be its quarterback situation. So, man, I love this. Uh, it's great theater, it's great PR. Hopefully, it's a great football game. Look, why did Sark make those comments in the first place that sparked all this? It is actually deeper than what you see on the surface.
