LEAKED: SEC Slams BYU and Texas Tech in Private Meeting w/ Playoff Committee
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The SEC reportedly used a closed-door meeting with the College Football Playoff selection committee to question how BYU and Texas Tech were evaluated last season. Why is the SEC suddenly so focused on the Big 12?
In this live stream, we break down the SEC’s complaints about BYU and Texas Tech, the obvious flaws in its argument and the bigger reason the conference keeps taking shots at Big 12 programs. The SEC has every financial and structural advantage in college football, but after another disappointing postseason, it appears to be looking for someone else to blame.
We also dive into the NCAA’s explosive new response in the Brendan Sorsby lawsuit. The NCAA says the Texas Tech quarterback placed thousands of impermissible bets during his college career, including dozens involving Indiana football while he was a player. Is there any realistic chance Sorsby plays this season?
Plus, we discuss the biggest updates from the Big 12 spring meetings, Brett Yormark’s stance on a potential 24-team College Football Playoff, the possibility of a 10th Big 12 conference game and the latest fallout from Steve Sarkisian’s comments about Texas Tech.

This week, man, I tell you what, the SEC just cannot keep the Big 12's name out of its mouth. It is, it is not just contained to Steve Sarkeesian, it is now apparently the entire SEC. All right. So we're going to talk about it. Uh, my apologies for being a couple minutes late here. I was out mowing. All right. I'm a little sweaty. I was out mowing, trying to get it in before it rains more. And uh I just so happen to be a little bit late. Okay. Thank you. It is the Open for Business Big 12 podcast. Welcome in. I'm John Kurtz. This is, of course, where the Big 12 just means more. Please like and subscribe as you enter. You can see on the outline tonight, we are just filled to the brim. I tell you what, it was feeling really slow there in like late April, early May, out of the NCAA tournament, heading into the doldrums of the college football offseason, and now stuff just won't stop happening. We've got a Brendan Sorsby update, which is basically just the NCAA dropping a bomb. The NCAA has really come down on Brendan Sorsby, unfortunately, for Texas Tech fans. They've got some evidence, they've got some receipts. It does not look good. Uh, the Big 12 had its spring meetings. I it did get some level of coverage. There was much more coverage of what was going on in the SEC this past week, but one really interesting idea to come out of the Big 12 that I think is great, and I think actually solves the biggest problem that most Big 12 fans have with Brett Yormark's Big 12. So that should be good news for everybody. We've got anonymous coaches talking about other programs they think are going to explode in the Big 12. And doesn't look like that Texas, Texas tech game is going to happen. That's the lineup for tonight. I appreciate everybody who is uh filing in here. I'm sure it will be a busy one tonight. Make sure you keep that chat lively. But if you want to guarantee that you get on the show tonight, you can do so by clicking the dollar sign below the chat box. Submit a super chat. Obviously, it supports the channel, and I appreciate all of you who do that, but it will also ensure that your question or comment makes it on the show tonight. Uh so you can do that. You can hit me up on Venmo at John-Kurz-4 as well. If you have a question or comment, you're not watching the show live. That's a great way to do it. It's actually where we're going to start tonight with my guy Irwin. Erwin, thank you for your support of the show. Just says great show. Uh, very nice and easy message there. Erwin, thank you. We were emailing back and forth a bit. Uh, Erwin and open for business, Big 12 newsletter subscriber, OFBnews.com. To get signed up for that. That is OFBnews.com. Join 6,300 other Big 12 fans who do subscribe. Get it twice a week for free to your inbox. Are you guys ready to go? I say we should do it. Uh well, let's let's address this real real quick here. I see the eye patch. The eye patch, Texas, Texas Tech, not going to happen. Who thought it was? Look, I'll be honest, I did not really think that Texas, Texas Tech was going to happen. Okay. Uh, I think that's part of the brilliance of this move from everybody associated here, Cody Campbell, who we're gonna hear from, because boy, he sure took some shots, uh, as you might expect. But also Joey Maguire. I thought this was very calculated by Joey Maguire and a uh a smart, smart move by him. So anyway, the eye patch. We'll get to more on that, okay? But we do uh have not like official official confirmation, but some sort of official confirmation on that front. Thank you to those listening on the audio platforms as well, by the way. This is a YouTube live show. Hangout Sundays at around eight, Wednesday or Thursday at around eight every week if you want to be here for the live shows. But I appreciate all of you who listen on Spotify, Apple, wherever it is that you get your podcasts. All right. The SEC took blatant shots at BYU and Texas Tech behind closed doors. And it was behind closed doors with the selection committee. All right, they got a private meeting with the college football playoff selection committee, and they used it to blast BYU and Texas Tech. And it's yet another example, just weird this week, that the SEC has been really preoccupied by the Big 12 of all things at SEC spring meetings. I'll tell you what was said, why it's pretty easily proven wrong, and address the real issue here. Like, okay, why can't the SEC stop talking about the Big 12? There's there's one clear thing that I think is what's happening here with the SEC, and I'll tell you what it is in this video. Okay, so the SEC did get a meeting with the College Football Playoff Selection Committee at SEC spring meetings. Now, full disclosure, this may happen with all conferences. I don't know that for sure. I did not see anybody reporting about that. It's we've just heard about this now two years in a row, the SEC meeting with the selection committee, because guess what? The SEC has been whining about the selection committee for two years straight, even though last year you may remember they had more teams in the college football playoff than any other conference. Uh they also spent all of last season complaining about the selection committee, and they underperformed both years in said playoff. Of course, in 2024, it was about SMU getting in. It was about Arizona State and Boise getting buys, and they got the rule change, right? So no more uh automatic buys for the the conference champions and the best G5 team. None of that happened anymore. All right, they got their way there, but they spent the entire offseason complaining again here after getting five teams into the playoff, none of whom advanced beyond the semis, only one of whom beat a team that wasn't from the SEC. I it's crazy, man. I the coaches just spend the offseason complaining. I do get that, but it the SEC just has it bad right now. And I will get to more on that because if you can kind of pick up what I'm laying down there, I think that's the clear reason why they continue to talk about the Big 12 here. They're down pretty bad. This is basically an extension of the exact argument that Steve Sarkeesian was making at the expense of Texas Tech earlier this week, right? That's all about the college football playoff. The SEC, specifically Steve Sarkeesian in Texas, think that Texas should have gotten more consideration and been in the playoff. Not more consideration. What am I saying? They think Texas should have been in the playoff, and their complaint is, well, they played Ohio State in week one on the road and went nine and three. Had they not done that, they would have been in the playoff. That's the frustration there. So then you see Sark pop off by lobbing out Texas Tech, and now behind closed doors. I'm going to get to the reporting from Pat 40. It's a lot of complaining about both BYU and Texas Tech. So Pat Forty, as I mentioned, who's now with SI, longtime college football reporter. He reported it was basically a like show your work meeting for the playoff committee. So I mean, think about this. Again, I don't know if the other leagues get this same opportunity, but it feels like this is like a school teacher. Like we're in we're in class, and the teacher is like suspicious that you cheated on the math test and you didn't show your work. You just like wrote down the answers. And so the teacher's like, hey, you need to stay after class and you need to work out this algebra problem. All right. You need to work out this trigonometry problem and show me your work because I don't believe that you actually know how you got here. It included executive director Rich Clark. He was involved in the meeting. And once again, remember, this meeting happened after the SEC had as many teams as anybody, five, and got nobody past the semifinals, only beat one non-SEC team. All right, so what was said? Please do subscribe to the channel, by the way. Push into 35k subs really helps. One click. Thank you very much. Uh this is a quote from Pat Forty's article. At particular issue, for some reason or for some in the room, was the explanations for the ranking of Big 12 teams, Texas Tech and BYU, in relation to several SEC squads. Penalties for losses were a particular frustration. Per sources in the room. One league coach whose team was in the playoff mix but did not make the field said he felt worse after hearing the presentation than he did when his team was excluded on selection Sunday. Do we think we know who that is? One coach who was in the mix but did not make the field said he felt worse after hearing the presentation than he did when his team was excluded. Sure sounds like Sark. Whatever. You get the idea. Uh man, I just like what they were upset with with tech getting a bye. If you read through the article, they were upset with tech getting a bye. Okay, so that's the Texas Tech piece of this. They're upset with BYU, if you will recall, BYU did not even get into the playoff. They're just upset with them getting as much consideration as they did, which wasn't even making it on the graphic. You'll also recall at the end of the year. But yeah, they're upset about that. They're upset with tech getting a bye. And the issue with tech specifically, we'll get to BYU here, but the issue with tech specifically was that they got bumped too big for blowout wins over teams that they don't think are any good, and they weren't punished enough for the Arizona State loss. Never mind that. I mean, hey, they did not have Texas Tech, it didn't have its starting quarterback. I know I'm the I'm the I'm a bad messenger for that one because I was such a Will Hammond guy last year over Barron Morton, but I will just say there is there is some reason to perhaps cut them a bit of slack for that. Um BYU, according to Pat Forty, which was the second team out of the 12 team bracket, was penalized less for two blowout losses to Texas Tech than some SEC teams were for closer losses, both within the league and in non-conference play. SEC coaches push back against that. Well, if we're gonna use the example of Texas, let's just listen here. Let's think about this. If we're gonna use the example of Texas, yeah, Texas lost by a lesser margin to Florida than BYU did to Texas Tech. Florida was four and eight. Four and eight last year. Okay, like yeah. Yeah, it's it's a little bit different. Texas Tech was a much better football team than Florida last year, okay? And I know I hear all the swamps, tough to play in. Okay, it's not exactly easy to go to a college game day fueled Jones ATT stadium in Lubbock either. Like, I just come on, but that's not even the and just wait, George's AD is gonna make that same point that I will push back on later. But there's a very, very easy counterpoint on BYU here. Like, honestly, I feel like the Texas Tech argument I would listen to more from the SEC. Not that I would agree with it, but we could have a better back and forth. BYU, man, they're frustrated about BYU having two losses to Texas Tech. Well, one of those came in the conference title game. You're not supposed to get punished for losing in your conference championship game, for making it to the conference title game because it sets a pretty bad precedent. And oh yeah. Do we remember what happened in the SEC championship game? Alabama lost by 21 points, three touchdowns, thoroughly dominated by Georgia. And yet Alabama did not drop. Alabama was not punished. BYU was punished for losing in the conference championship game. What are we doing here, SEC? Like what it's just you're like, what more do you want, especially at the time when your stock is the lowest it's been in 25 years as a league? Like what do you want here? By the way, Alabama also lost to a five and seven team, Florida State, last year, which both of BYU's losses came to Texas Tech. And on BYU, if we're BYU is getting some sort of unfair treatment here, in the college football playoff era, no power four team that finished 11-1 or better at the end of the regular season had ever been left outside of the top 10, and BYU was left outside of the top 10 of the playoff rankings. Shout out to Casey Lundquist from BYU Cougars on SI who pointed that out. In the college football playoff era, no team that finished 11-1 like BYU did or better at the end of the regular season had ever been left outside of the top 10. So BYU was historically disrespected. They got dropped for losing in their conference championship game when the SEC champion did not, and yet here the SEC is still upset. And BYU did not make the playoff field. BYU did not make the playoff field. What are we doing? The SEC stock is as low as it's been in a generation. They have all the advantages fixed in their favor. They stole the Big 12's best brands. They make way more money, they control the playoff decision making, and yet still here they are acting like the victim, like they deserve more out of the committee at the expense of the Big 12. And I look, I'll tell you why it's a there's a very simple reason why this is happening. Okay. But before we do that, the Georgia AD. Let's hear from the Georgia AD, Josh Brooks. I feel like this is pretty indicative of like where they're at. If you're trying to understand, like wrap your head around where is the SEC coming from on this? Josh Brooks says, Look, I'm biased. I've spent a lot of time in the SEC. I was part of the mock selection exercise a number of years ago. And one of the things that took me back is when people would say things like, that was a bad loss or that wasn't a great win. And to me, that's hard to say when you go to some of these venues, especially at night, when you judge Texas on the loss at Florida last year and say that's going to be a massive hit to their resume. Well, Florida's a really tough team, and that's a really tough place to play. Florida was a four and eight team. Like, this is just if we're going to do this, this is if we follow this out to its logical conclusion, then we just put the entire the SEC is the playoff every year, and we don't do anything else. Like we you the games have to matter. You have to win games. You got to play the games. We can't just look at Florida and say, well, DJ Lagway was really talented, and the swamp has historically been a very difficult place to play. So you can't penalize anybody for losing that game. We can't we have to play the games. The results have to matter. Like, what are we doing? And it would be one thing if the SEC were continuing to dominate, if they were on that stretch of like nine of 13 years winning the title. They're not. They haven't even played for one in three years. It's it's insane. It's insane. And I like, I know I get labeled an SEC hater because I have to be in the position of defending the Big 12, but like I'm not, I respect that the SEC is a great conference. I they they are going to win national championships again. They're not done forever. I'm not anybody that's saying anything like that, but to request this level of special treatment when you're not even performing is unbelievable. That's that's it's just not accurate. It's not appropriate. And we cannot be giving in to that or rewarding that. Why is this happening? Because of just what I said. The SEC has not experienced this in a generation. You literally have a generation of SEC fans who don't know what this is like. They don't know what it's like to not be able to wave that SEC flag vociferously and not have everybody be like, oh yeah, yeah, they are the best. They don't know what it's like, and so they can't handle it. And so what do you do when you're lashing out? Well, you look at the Big Ten, and I mean, like, yeah, you could lash out against the Big Ten, but they've been drilling you in the playoff, and they've won three straight titles. So you can't really credibly do that. So what's the next move? You punch down. You punch down, and they're punching down right now on the Big 12. It's easy target. We can do that. We already took their two best teams. They've got this one big brand that's a big story that you know we all hate because in this NIL era where other people can pay players, it there's been a dramatic difference in our performance, and Texas Tech's the poster child of it, we'll punch down. We'll punch down at Texas Tech. You know, Josh Pate, I heard Josh Pate talking this week about SEC coaches complaining about how they were promised if they went to nine league games that the playoff would then expand. And now it hasn't, and they've gone to nine league league games. And Josh Pate's uh response to them was deal with it. Deal with it. You already have every advantage you could possibly have. And there are probably, he said, a lot of teams in the Big 12 that would tell you, hey, here's XYZ advantage you have over us that we don't think is very fair either. And he was like, look, at worst, it evens out. And it's just like, yeah, man, if anybody had an ounce of self-awareness here, you would say that you have every advantage in the world. You still got more teams in than anybody else last year when you haven't performed in three years. What are you doing attacking the Big 12? It is punching down, and it's what happens when a bully starts getting cornered and needs a little pick-me-up, man. Needs a little pick-me-up, not commanding the playground like he used to. Now, another thing the SEC does not really like is this new Senate bill that's been introduced and is a big deal. Click here to find out why the SEC does not like it. Thanks for everybody watching the clipped version. Those of you hanging out live, I appreciate you, my friends. Uh, thank you for being here. Thank you very much for being here. Uh, please do like the video, subscribe to the channel, make sure you sign up for the Open for Business Big 12 newsletter. OFBnews.com to do that. It is OFBnews.com to do that. We say hello to Pacific Northwest Ute, who leaves a super chat, which you can do by clicking the dollar sign below the chat box. Uh Pacific Northwest Ute, best puns in the game. He says SEC equals summer Eeyore Conference. Sanky Hanky. That's pretty good. That's pretty good. That's one of your best ones in a while. Pacific Northwest Ute Summer Eeyore Conference. Is pretty pretty damn good. Can we can you get AI on that? Can somebody put that through uh Chat GPT? Give me like change the SEC logo to just Eeyore. I don't know if you could make like three like warped Eeyores, like you know, there's like the S and the E and the C. Uh somehow, someone figure that out. Make something good for me. I appreciate it. If you do, if you do and you tweet it to me at JL Kurtz, I'll I'll put it on the next show. I will I will put it on the next show. Uh okay, we've got Brendan Soresby news. Maybe some are sick of hearing about this uh by now, but this is an evolving story and it's a huge story. Uh because I continue to say, like, hey, this is arguably the most high-profile player in the Big 12. And I say that before all this happened, he was still arguably the most high-profile player in the Big 12, best quarterback on who people perceive to be the best team. It is a big deal. The NCAA dropped a bomb on Brendan Soresby and his chances of playing this year in uh its official response to Soresby's lawsuit. And the biggest reason, guys, it was more than just one little bet on his own team. It's not looking good. In this video, I'll show you the smoking gun. We're gonna break down if there's still any hope at all that he plays. And we now know actually exactly what Cincinnati knew. Okay, so we got the scoop on whether or not the Bearcats are very culpable here. And has this been a bad look for Texas Tech the way they have responded to all of this? Okay, tackle it all in this video. All right, so Brendan Sorsby, he got caught gambling, tons of pro sports. You guys know this by now. What one of the things that came out of the NCAA's response was that it was like at least $90,000 in total bets. There were thousands of bets, including Turkish basketball, the Nathan's hot dog eating contest, which again, that part I will say sounds kind of fun. Uh, but most importantly, a ton of college sports and even bets on his own team at Indiana in 2022 when Soresby was playing for the Hoosiers. So the NCAA has now ruled him officially permanently ineligible. Right? Texas Tech tried to appeal that. The NCAA has ruled him officially permanently ineligible, much like Hunter Deckers of Iowa State. And so, in kind, Brendan Sorsby has hired a super attorney who's beaten the NCAA on the House case and Austin and some high profile ones. He's filed a lawsuit seeking an injunction that would restore his eligibility for 2026. What do you really need to know about that? Well, on Monday, we get the first hearing for that. So it doesn't mean we'll get a total decision necessarily, but we could uh tomorrow get a decision on that. The injunction would allow him to play if he gets it, but then of course, appeals can be made. So billable hours. I don't know where exactly this road ends, but that's where we're at with it right now. And it's it's not looking good for Soresby. The more information that comes out, the worse and worse it looks. Despite the fact that Texas Tech really stepped up and stuck its neck out to support him. Uh, the NCAA made its case public, push back against the lawsuit. And man, I'm telling you, they brought the big guns. You ready for this list? I'll save the big one for last, which is the real reason that things are looking bleak for Soresby. The rest of this, to me, is just kind of fodder for people to gack at. Well, there's one real killer smoking gun here. But the NCAA says Brendan Sorsby admitted to betting $90,000 on over 9,000 bets over the course of his college career. He plays $6,500 in bets on college football and uh on 300 bets. 300 bets for $6,500 on college football, unrelated to Indiana, okay, separate from the Indiana bets. He also was transferring money to friends uh out of state to make bets for him. He transferred at least 60 grand to two friends to make bets for him. He bet a lot on Indiana basketball while he was in school there. So 40 plus bets for $1,400 plus dollars. You know what I mean? That's the kind of thing where you start thinking about it like, okay, does he have inside information on who's playing or who's not? Because he's an athlete there. He's friends with those guys. Like, that's that's not great. Uh, all told, he made 8,600 impermissible bets. Bets at Indiana for over $30,000 and 500 impermissible bets for $38,000 at Cincinnati. Okay. But that's not the killer. The killer here, because we're not if we're talking about, hey, you've got a gambling problem, betting on professional sports is not great. It's against the rules, but the real, real bugaboo is betting on your own team. We got an update there. Please do subscribe to the channel, pushing to 35k subs, getting closer and closer. Thank you, everybody. One click. A lot of you watch. Give me one click. It would help me a lot if you subscribe. Brendan Soresby, here it is. He made at least 44-0, at least 40 bets on Indiana football in September and October of 2022 for at least $850. Hunter Deckers, quarterback at Iowa State from a couple of years ago, who was declared permanently ineligible. He got the permaban. He made one bet on Iowa State. Brendan Soresby made 40 on his team when he was playing for Indiana. Now, the article, the athletic article that I was reading, does say that Soresby claims at least a couple of those Indiana bets that came from accounts associated with him, he was not aware of. I mean, okay. So he said, but it said a couple. It was like it listed two specific ones while also saying in the article there were 40 that happened betting on Indiana while he was at Indiana. That that ain't good, man. That ain't good. You betted you bet 40 times on your team that you're playing on, even if you're just a red shirt, you're not playing. That's the NCAA can't have that, man. And the NCAA has argued, and I agree, that it really sets a bad precedent if you can't punish somebody for betting 40 times on the team that they play for. And I guess you would say, well, John, they can punish him. Just don't make it the entire year. Texas Tex even said, Soresby said, I'll take a two-game suspension. Okay. Terrible precedent if that doesn't mean you're out. What do you have to do to be out if that's not getting you out? Like I agree with the NCAA wholeheartedly on this. I would, if you told me in a vacuum, like I would rather have Brendan Soresby play than not for the Big 12's sake, for college football's sake, for our entertainment value's sake. But I the NCAA's right here. I can't argue with that. I can't argue with that. Now, Texas Tech tried to make a really compelling case. I'll address that in a moment. But what about Cincinnati? Remember this whole Cincinnati issue. It was, well, what is what did Cincinnati know when he was playing there? We did get an update on that. And I got I got to admit, you know, Cincinnati fans were giving people some grief that were talking about the reporting that said, hey, Cincy actually did know before the 2024 season. And then the Cincy reporters' reports were like more like, well, no, Cincy really didn't know and they wouldn't have played somebody unknowingly. I actually think the documented info that we got on that kind of backs up both cases. Okay. So if it's possible to say both are right, here's what we got. On August 19th, 2024. So before the season, August 19th, 2024, the University of Cincinnati's compliance office received a prohibit alert related to Mr. Soresby's activity on prize picks. Mr. Soresby stated that he was denied access to prize picks and had not placed any wagers on anything, but was potentially looking to wager on the University of Cincinnati compliance staff interviewed Mr. Soresby. There's a weird typo there. He was potentially looking to bet on Cincinnati compliance staff interviewed Mr. Soresby and provided sports wagering education, after which the matter was resolved in the Prohibat system. So Prohibat is the program that everybody signs up for. It flags when student athletes have signed up for a gambling app or are making bets. So that happened since he was aware of it. They bring Soresby in and he said, Hey, I didn't bet on anything. If it stopped me from doing that because of this Prohibat thing. And so Cincy was like, okay, they gave him some gambling education and bada ping bada boom. That apparently is what happened at Cincy. So that actually could satisfy both of those reports that were coming out about Cincy early on in the process. Now, I get if you're going to say, hey, I'm a little skeptical of that, John, did they really not know? And they didn't dig any deeper based on that. You can be skeptical of that if you want. That at least right now, it seems like in the NCAA's eyes, Cincinnati has at least plausible deniability there. Okay. Now, for the Texas Tech side of this, they came out hugely in support of Brendan Soresby. A big letter. Uh, Lawrence uh Skubanik, the university president, big letter of support for Soresby and saying, like, hey, you know, we got to support a guy with a problem here. I even I saw some people pushing the narrative like, hey, if you if you put the hammer down on Soresby and don't let him play, you're gonna have so many guys that develop gambling problems that don't come forward about it until it's too late because they'll be afraid of their career. And it's gonna to all of that. I just want to say then, why do we have sports betting just widely legal? If it's just inevitable that we're gonna have 18 to 24 year olds developing these crippling addictions to it that they can't speak out about. Like, why are we why are we doing this? But that's that's a totally different show, okay? Um anyway, again, it's it's all about the integrity piece of this. That the NC, it's a slippery slope. The NCAA cannot go down that road. But Texas Tech stood up and rocked really hard for their guy. I'm not gonna, I don't think it's a bad look or anything. Like I understand tech doing that. It's your guy. You you certainly, for recruiting purposes, would want to be seen as somebody supporting your player to the end. And beyond that, this is a guy who is going, I mean, he went through the 35 days or whatever of treatment. He made a bunch of bets. He clearly is going through something here. And, you know, if then the school and the program's kind of turning up, turning their back on him, like, yeah, it's you don't want to do that. And you develop a personal relationship with the guy. I've got no problem with what Texas Tech did. I agree with the NCAA here. I side with the NCAA here, but I don't I don't have any issue with what with what Texas Tech did here. But the the bottom line for tech is just like, I guys, you better get Will Hammond ready. You better get Kirk Francis ready. Uh you better figure something out. Especially if that Texas game happens, because that would be week one. But hey, you got to get something figured out and figured out pretty pretty fast there. So let me know in the comments what you think. Are you in support of Soresby here? I'm sure there are probably still some out there who feel that way. Um, but this is not the only battle Texas Tech has on its hands right now, as I mentioned. Red Raiders are trying to get Texas to play them this year. Click here to find out if that's going to happen. That's for those watching the clipped version. Everybody hanging out live. I'm still here. We're gonna talk more about that, the Texas, Texas Tech situation uh later on. Let's let's pop in for a couple super chats. If you want to uh be on the show tonight, click the dollar sign below the chat box. That is how you do it. I appreciate everybody who's here. Let's talk to uh Lewis. What's up, Lewis? BYU has a lifetime record of uh three games over 500 versus current SEC teams. Commissioner Stinky and Patootie should have more respect for BYU. All right. Well, we've got we we the name calling is out in full force here, okay? I would just like to point out Greg Sankey, Mr. Sankey, sir, Overlord, uh liege, whatever I'm supposed to call you. This was not me. These are the lovely patrons of my show tonight. But uh, we've got Summer Eeyore Conference and Sanky Hanky, and now we've got Commissioner Stinky and Patoe. So uh Lewis. Yeah, I mean it's predictable. It's predictable because what do we, I mean, what do we see on the internet? You know, I mean that it really is like the SEC acts and behaves like it's most online fans do behind closed doors when they're meeting with the selection committee. Like that's really what it feels like here. We see how they respond. It's a meme for a reason that the SEC just won another hypothetical game and they're unbeaten in hypothetical games. It's a meme for a reason. Again, the SEC is a great conference. And if they were doing this seven years ago, it would carry a lot more weight and have a lot more merit. But it is not 2018 anymore. It is not 2019 anymore, if I could do some math. All right, it's 2026, man. Things have changed. Uh, thank you for being here, Lewis. I appreciate you. Kim. Kim, what's up, Kim? I Kim, I get I get your standpoint on this. If I were a tech fan, I feel like I would feel it probably the same way because even as an outsider looking at the story, uh, I feel sort of the same way. As somebody who, as I said, agrees with the NCAA, but ultimately I do wish that Brendan Soresby were playing for Texas Tech this year. Kim says, as a tech donor and alum, I'm so damn sick of this story I could puke. I don't think we need Soresby to win, so I prefer prefer we move on without him. It's a good I think that's a good attitude to have. Texas Tech can definitely still win the league without him. You guys know my thoughts and feelings on the the ceiling of Will Hammond. I I, you know, I I've been told, I mean, Chris Level came on this show and said if Hammond would not have had the knee injury, like he would have been the guy, they would not have gone to the portal. That's an interesting one to me. Um, but if you take that, if you take him for his word, and I mean he's as plugged in as anybody with Texas Tech. It's a big statement on Will Hammond. And yeah, man, roll with your guy. Spot the ball, roll with your guy. Let's go play. Uh, I totally understand because this story continues to drag on, Kim. And I will just say the good news is that the supplemental draft is on June 22nd. We're less than a month away from that. Or that's the deadline for the supplemental draft. It seems like that's it's probably gonna die after that. I think it will be done by then, but who knows with all the legal processes and stuff. That would be my uh my silver lining for you there. Uh, appreciate you, Kim. What's up, David? David says, uh, how does Dark, how does Darth Sankey eat in his Vader helmet? All right, I mean, listen, I get it, guys. This is all I'm I'm laughing along with you. I am I am not a massive Greg Sankey fan, even though I mean, obviously I like I respect what he's done for the SEC. He's obviously done a good job for the league. He is not my favorite guy. But I I will continue to point out, I know in this instance, it's like, okay, really, guys, like stop with this. But also, like Tony Petiti is the bigger, the bigger problem here. Tony Petiti is the one that is more frustrating. But now as I say that, he's kind of throwing you an olive branch with the 2014 playoffs. So I I don't know. We can just be mad at both of them. If anybody has more petiti puns and petiti jokes, I welcome those as well. But uh, David Darsenke, I don't know. I have not seen him eat. Okay, I cannot confirm or deny that he eats. I don't know if he takes off the mask. I don't know if there's a feeding tube involved. I really have no idea. Um, I'll have to do some extra reporting on that and try and get back to you. But I appreciate you, David. Uh, thank you, my friend. Okay. Well, hey, Big 12 had some meetings. All right, the SEC can have spring meetings, so can the Big 12. Rejoice, Big 12 fans. The biggest problem that many of you have with Brett Yormark's Big 12 is going to be solved if the latest Big 12 idea comes to fruition. Okay, sounds like it's about to be fixed. Plus, the Big 12's biggest mistake, according to BYU fans, uh, was kind of fixed this week by Brett Yormark. All right. So we'll talk about that. Plus, the other big bullet point out of here is Brett Yormark spoke on the 2014 playoff. And I gotta be honest, it sounds like he listens to the show. He sounds a lot like me. Me and Brett Yormark, two P's in a pot. Uh, in this video, we'll break down all the updates from uh Big 12 spring meetings. Uh John Wilner, who I think maybe I shouldn't speak until I have this all lined up. I think I'm gonna be able to get him on the show next week. Uh, but John Wilner, Wilner Hotline, he's still doing a great job covering all things football on the West Coast, which, you know, now with the former uh Pac-12 teams includes the Big 12. He was out there covering all this. And he writes this on the 2014 playoff, the Big 12 favors a 2014 playoff field directionally. That's in quotes, according to Brett Yormark, directionally. The Big 12 favors a 2014 playoff field, he told reporters at the conclusion of the conference's spring business meetings. Beyond that level of support, more information on both the economics and unintended consequences of expansion is needed. Quote, we haven't had a lot of discussion around 24, Jormark said. Uh now we have to do the work and see where it takes us. So, as opposed to the SEC who's being totally against this, like, nope, get this out of here. And the Big Ten, who is completely for this, like, let's just keep going. Why stop at 12? Let's roll it out to 24. Brent Yormark is like, hey, uh directionally, we like this, which is basically saying, like, hey, I get that it gives us more access if there are 24 teams. Even if you think it wouldn't be proportionately enough, we would literally have more access. But we need to stop and see what this is gonna do. Like, we can't we got to be careful, like what unintended consequences are here. That's more or less what I've been saying, guys. I'm like, hey, I get that it would be good for the Big 12. I do like that, but I also like college football's regular season. I want it to have meaning and I don't want to squeeze too much toothpaste out of the tube that can't go back. Because if you go to 24 teams, it's not getting reduced. Once those checks start coming in, they're not gonna take less money to go back to a different system. Like it's you're gonna be stuck with it. So I think this is a totally fine stance, and I can appreciate it because it's basically exactly where I'm at. I'm actually a little bit surprised your mark is not more gung-ho for it because most of the commissioners, Mike Elko said it this week, Texas AM head coach. He said, Hey, I want 40 teams in the playoffs because I want job security, but we're all just making decisions, or we're all giving you the opinion of like what I want, not what's best for the sport. Everybody operates from that, from that position. And so for your mark, I would figure he would just be like, Yeah, let's do it. It gives us more access, but he's being more measured here. I certainly appreciate that. Okay, I promised you BYU's biggest beef getting fixed, and most Big 12 fans, biggest beef getting fixed. Please do subscribe to the channel, by the way. Uh, one click, it helps a lot. If you watch and don't subscribe, I would really appreciate it. Uh, well, BYU fans were really upset with Brett Yormark last year that he didn't campaign for the Cougars soon enough. And I said at the time, and I will still say now, like, I get that frustration. If you think your mark should have been campaigning harder for BYU's playoff resume, I totally get it, man. Um, he basically waited until the final week. You know what I mean? The strongest that we heard Brett Yormark speak up, at least in the most visible way, was literally the press conference right before the Big 12 championship game. I was sitting in that room at Jerry World in Dallas where he finally was like laying down some facts and some support. He had done it, I think, a day or two before at the Arizona-Arizona State game, or maybe I guess it would have been the week before then, right? The week before it, the Arizona-Arizona State game. But it was on a broadcast that I don't know that a lot of people really saw. So you just didn't have a whole lot of support from the commissioner as BYU's getting left off the graphic. They are in the SEC's eyes, apparently getting way too much credit for where they were at, but in everybody else with a brain's eyes, not enough. And Yormark was just not saying a whole lot. Well, he offered some real support this week, okay, because Brett Yormark was asked if he felt the league was disrespected last year with only one team in the playoff. And Brett Yormark said, quote, in some respects, we are disrespected. BYU should have made the CFP last year. Okay. Does that satisfy you, BYU fans? I know I was a little tongue-in-cheek when I said earlier it's all fixed for BYU. That's not going to make you look. You you need, if you're a BYU fan, you need and want the response. When it's in the moment and it matters, it doesn't matter at all really anymore. It's just going to be noise. And the SEC is making way more noise and way more of a stink about all the playoff stuff right now. So it's going to get totally lost in the shuffle. I will just reiterate, I mean, I what I was basically told, it's like it was kind of some chestnut checker stuff with playoff negotiations and where things were going with that and dynamics in the room. I'm not saying you have to like or like accept that, but that is, I believe, what was going on there with your mark last year. Big 12 fans, though, I've heard all the complaining about protected rivalries. Okay. Protected rivalries. And I think this is easy to get, speaking of lost in the shuffle, very much so lost in the shuffle. But the Big 12 is considering playing a 10th conference game in football. And when you see that headline, you're like, oh wow. There are a lot of different ways to go with that. I think a 2014 playoff could get the SEC and Big Ten to like some sort of scheduling agreement. You already have the SEC and ACC both going to nine conference games now. So there's less, there, there are less opportunities to play teams from other conferences. Like that is a fact. It's already been happening. And we're moving closer and closer toward even fewer. Like, look again at Alabama dropping Oklahoma State when they went to a nine-game schedule. Like you've been having Arizona State, I think, has gotten dropped from a schedule or two. It's Texas Tech. I mean, like Mississippi State, NC State, Texas Tech has been dropped by a couple of schools as well. As all this has happened, it's going to get more difficult to get good non-conference games. All this complaining about Tech's non-con schedule with the Steve Sarkeesian comments, it's hard for tech to schedule games right now. Like there are not that many opportunities out there. So from that standpoint, it makes sense. Like 10th conference game, that guarantees at least a solid opponent, you know. Luck of the draw on who it is in the league, but you're going to get an extra good opponent there. It's better for selling your TV inventory because they don't have to worry about that being Tennessee Tech when instead it could be Texas Tech, right? So a lot of ways that that makes sense. But one of the best things I think here for Big 12 fans would be: hey, if you're playing 10 league games, bring back K-State, Iowa State as a protected rivalry. Bring back Baylor, Texas Tech as a protected rivalry. Like it's going to, I think, satisfy a lot of those complaints, which combine that with taking games out of Rivalry Week andor playing games on Friday night. Like it's it's scheduling at large that has been the biggest complaint. And within that, the one I think people feel strongest about is not having enough protected rivalries or not protecting the correct rivalries. That would help satisfy a lot of it. So I I think that would be a pretty wise move and a pretty smart thing. You know, do I ultimately love it? Do I ultimately love it? I I would rather have the Big 12 be able to get regular games against teams from the ACC, Big Ten, and SEC. But based on the circumstances and where everything is going, I think that's about as about as good as anything you could do. Part of it is like we're already having the SEC talk about breakaway and self-governance and only playing themselves. And like I do sort of hate moving another step toward like everybody just playing themselves. But it is what it is, and you have to respond in kind with what's going on in the atmosphere and the environment. So I do get it. I definitely get it. Let me know if you're on board with that. You on board with the 10th conference game? Hit me up in the comments. Let me know. Uh, the Big 12 should be on board with the new Senate bill. Click here to find out why. That's for everybody watching the clip version. Those of you that are hanging out here live, I appreciate you. I've got a couple of uh quick ones, quicker topics before we get out of here. If you have a super chat, you've got like 15 more minutes to get it in. Click the dollar sign below the chat box to do so. You can uh hit my Venmo up at Venmo up at John-Kurtz-4. If you are not watching live and you want to leave a question or comment, you can do it that way. I'll kick off the next show with it. Liking and subscribing is totally free and helps a lot. So does signing up for the Open for Business Big 12 newsletter at OFBnews.com. All right. This one will be fun. Okay. The other Texas Tech story that won't die, along with Brendan Soresby, is this battle with Texas, which is more or less a PR battle. It's probably not going to turn to a battle on the field. We have some confirmation that Texas, Texas Tech is not going to happen this year. Despite Texas Tech throwing down the gauntlet and challenging the Longhorns, it looks like it is not going to happen. But that does not mean that Texas Tech has put the gun back in the holster. There have been more shots fired from well, one Cody Campbell very publicly at Steve Sarkeesian, and another one that sort of slipped through the cracks from uh Kirby Hokutt, the athletic director at Texas Tech. So we're going to take all this in and go through how Texas Tech really is the PR winner in all of this, even if the game is not going to happen. All right. And I'll give you the reporting on the game and whether or not that's going to happen, which is not. Okay. So Steve Sarkeesian, again, this all goes back to Steve Sarkeesian talking to the Houston touchdown club. And he said, quote, there's a team in our state at another conference with a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and threes, we could go undefeated. And they'll probably make the CFP this year. All right. So apparently, first of all, one angle we have not taken on this, uh, Sark, big Well Hammond guy, apparently. Big Well Hammond guy. He still has tech in the college football playoff, even without Brendan Soresby, apparently.
unknownUh
SPEAKER_01So there you go. That's Will Hammond. Take that as a feather in your cap, man. Steve Sarkeesian believes in you. Um, yeah, look, comments that are very sour grapes because of what happened with playing Ohio State at the beginning of the year last year, losing that game, getting left out at 9-3. We all know this this is coming from that place. This is coming from a place of the SEC not being able to really punch up at the Big Ten, so they're punching down at the Big 12. Uh, it is what it is. Well, Texas Tech responded, not only with Cody Campbell firing off some tweets, but Joey McGuire saying, Hey, I talked to the head coach of Texas State and Abilene Christian, each of our week one opponents, and said, Hey, would you move this game if we can get them to play us? And they said, sure, we'll play each other. And then Texas Tech said, Come to Jones ATT Stadium in Lubbock, or we'll even have Cody Campbell talk to uh Steven Jones, I believe it was, with the Cowboys, and we'll play at Jerry World. All right. So let's go play. Put your money where your mouth is. We have an update now on whether or not that's going to actually happen. Uh, unfortunately, according to the athletics, Chris Fanini, it is not going to happen. Uh, he reports, he said Maguire later confirmed to the athletic that he did text both coaches at Abilene Christian in Texas State ahead of his comments. At least one of those coaches took it his tongue-in-cheek, according to another person familiar with the exchange. So, all right. So, one of the coaches was kind of like, yeah, okay, right. Which is a fair response. I understand everybody being cynical about whether or not Texas is going to play the game. Uh, namely also because they have Ohio State in week two. So, do they really want to go play Texas Tech? Which is kind of the funny part of all this. They don't want to go get beat up by Texas Tech, they don't want to play a good team. There's all this talk about Texas Tech not being worthy of respect, but yet you don't want to play them because you don't want to get beat up and play that team before you go play Ohio State. I digress. Uh, but the other line from the article such a change is not expected to actually happen this late in the year, though Texas Tech officials would certainly welcome it. So change is not expected to actually happen, according to Chris Benini of The Athletic and his reporting. Look, it was probably never going to happen. That's a part of why it was such a brilliant PR move from Joey Maguire. Because look, first of all, I like Sark started this. You know, I I've seen most people, tech has definitely won the PR war here. Even when it happened, there were a lot of people being like, Sark, like you guys won't play them. Your athletic director won't take their calls anymore after you they tried to get you to play them when you left the league. That's not a great look. You're not the best messenger for this. You lost 10 games in three years in the Big 12. Like, what are you doing? And then when Joey Maguire fired back and said, Yeah, well, play us. Play us at Jerry World. And then it's still like, well, they're not going to play that game. Then yeah, they have definitely lost the PR war. But I have seen some people being like, well, I mean, tech should just schedule better. Like, Joey knows he can say this because they won't actually play the game, so that's not fair. That's stupid from Joey. No, it's absolutely fair. Joey Maguire didn't go out of his way to do this unprompted. It was Steve Sarkeesian that did this unprompted. Like, what do you mess with the bull? You get the horns. And speaking of bulls, did you guys hear Cody Campbell go on the Pat McAfee show? Did you hear Cody Campbell on Pat McAfee? Because he gave a really good analogy about steers and bulls and the difference between those two and what is lying in Austin. If you don't know the difference, I would just Google what is the difference between a steer and a bull. And I would actually say I mean there's it's really like two big differences there. Okay. But here's what Cody Campbell had to say about it.
SPEAKER_00Physical difference. And this is a family show, so I'm not going to lay it out to you, but I think a lot of your viewers know, and you got you might maybe have some of your guys look it up. But Bebo, the the the Mark Horns mascot, is a steer. And it's become very clear that there are quite a few steers down in Austin and not very many, very many bulls. And let me tell you something. When Spark opened his mouth and he picked a fight with a bunch of West Texas boys, he should have known that he better get ready to pack a lunch. Because we're ready to strap it on. We're ready to spot the ball and we're ready to go. So September 3rd, September 5th, you name the place, we'll be there and we'll go at it.
SPEAKER_01Alright, now pay close attention there at the end because I do see SWB 1989 in here. Says if tech had balls, they would have said play anytime anywhere. Well, that's literally what Cody Campbell just said. Now, I know that that isn't that wasn't like officially decreed by Joey McGuire, who was saying play at home or play a neutral. Cody Campbell just said play anytime anywhere. So it sure seems like Cody Campbell is saying, yeah, we'll we'll go to Austin fine. Play anytime anywhere. I understand why, as a Texas fan, you would bristle at that a little bit. I think if there's one criticism of the way Tech has handled this, then maybe that would be it. I think ultimately for tech, it's not nearly as much about being worried about playing in Austin as it is they don't want to give up a home game because they're already looking at this as a year where they're having to play two non-Saturday home games. We know about that whole deal with the Houston thing. So they don't want to give up another home game at the at the beginning of the year. That is that is definitely a part of it. Um but you gotta admit, man, like that's that's a pretty good wrestling promo. It's a pretty good wrestling promo that Cody Campbell just cut there. Joey Maguire gave a really good one, too, with Rich Rodriguez laughing next to him. Go watch the last live show if you want to see that. Um but the the other thing I would say to the the comment, like, hey, Tech should be saying anytime, anywhere, if they're really gonna be serious about this. Well, another thing from the Chris Manini article is that Joey Maguire brought up recent comments this week from Chris Del Conte, the athletic director of Texas, that implied Texas's 2028 and 2029 games against Notre Dame were only tentative. Quote, we'll take that game against Notre Dame if they want to get out of it. So Texas Tech is giving Texas plenty of chances here to put their money where their mouth is, right? Sark ran his mouth after Texas already said no, we won't play you. Now Tech has come up as a program. They have offered to play this year. They're offering to play in 2028 and 29. And to this point, Texas is is still balking at that. So I don't think it's really fair to say that they're uh the Red Raiders are not putting their money where their mouth is. I would say that they are. Uh, by the way, the Kirby Hocut shot. Let me make sure I get this in. I said it had kind of gone overlooked. I basically overlooked it here in this segment. My my apologies to K-State legend Kirby Hocut. Um Kirby Hokut said, quote, we were in the CFP last year, and I forget who Texas had in the first round last year. That's pretty good. That's it's very uh it's very like basic reply guy stuff there. We might need to, you know, pizzazz it up a little bit for Hokut, but he is an AD, I get it. You know, that run that one through the the burner filter a couple times and you'll get something much stronger there, but that is your basic like internet comeback there from from Kirby Hokut. I it did it did make me laugh. It did make me laugh. Uh hey, if you're wondering, like, why was Sark doing this in the first place? Why'd he start all of this? Click here to find out why Sark did this in the first place. That's for everybody watching the clip version, those of you hanging out live. I've got one more topic for you, and this is something we're gonna be able to work our way through. Thanks to the great folks at Athlon. Okay, the great folks at Athlon always do this anonymous coaches. It's not a poll, really, but they ask anonymous coaches in the conference about other teams in the league, and it produces some great stuff. So we're gonna get to who the coaches in the Big 12 think is going to blow up here very soon. But let's talk real quick to uh Campi. What's up, Campy? Uh John, well, I am not a big fan of the 2014 playoff. How is it not inevitable with destroyed bowl games? What are we playing for? A nice season? Well, Campy, you're you're doing a good job pulling at the string that Bud Elliott was from the cover three podcast, which I thought was the best explanation for a 2014 playoff, the best justification for a 2014 playoff of anybody that I've seen, because he said, Look, used to be that if you finish nine and three and you're a programmer like that means a lot, which it means a lot to a bunch of programs, you'd have a nice reward by going to the Citrus Bowl or the Outback Bowl or the Holiday Bowl or something like that. And now that's just that's not a reward anymore because we don't care about the Bulls. That's not an appropriate reward for that type of season. So you expand access to the playoff, and that becomes the reward. We're now in a world where all anybody cares about is the playoff because we've had it shoved down our throat for over 10 years by ESPN since they bought the rights to the original playoff, and it's just over time it's developed into like that's all anybody cares about instead of the regular season. I think that's sad. I don't like it. I think it's dangerous for the long-term health of the product, but here we are. So I get it. I get what you're saying with that. I totally, totally do. Um, I don't think it the reason I would say it's not inevitable is because Greg Sankey exists and the SEC exists. They have one half of the decision-making power, they have 50% of the decision-making power in this. And so, yeah, the Big Ten is in favor of it, the Big 12's in favor of it, Notre Dame's in favor of it, the ACC is in favor of it, but what truly matters is what the SEC and the Big Ten think, and half of that group does not want it. So I would love to sit here and say, like, yeah, man, I the Big 12 does have real authority here. Now, I think they have more authority than some lead on, just because we saw, I mean, Brett Yormark turning against Brett Yormark and Jim Phillips turning against the 16 team proposal that was the 4422. They did basically kill that by deciding to be against that. Some of that was through the work of public perception. So, you know, maybe maybe if you want to say, hey, uh they could help info, but here they're swimming against they're they're swimming upstream, I think, with public perception. So I don't see it having the same level of impact. Um Greg Senke is the reason it's not inevitable. If the SEC really wants to put its foot down, I don't think it will happen. So we'll see. We'll see. But I don't disagree on your point of like, hey, this is this has to be the new reward. I do, I do get that. I definitely do. Okay. There are two Big 12 programs that are about to take a huge jump out of the seller of the league, and that's according to Big 12 coaches. Not according to me, but according to Big 12 coaches. They gave anonymous quotes and anonymous opinions that are gonna shock you if you're not paying attention to the bottom of the Big 12. Uh, I'll reveal the teams, I'll give you the quotes, and I'll tell you if the coaches are right or if these are guys just, you know, sucking up to their friends in the coaching uh fraternity. So you'll get my opinion too. All right. But shout out to Athlon, first and foremost, who provides these anonymous quotes from coaches every offseason about this time. They get included in their preseason magazine, one of the great preseason mags. I mean, I've been buying Athlon since I was like a 10-year-old, you know, back in the early 2000s. Um, I love the anonymous quotes. They just get quotes from other coaches in the league about what they're seeing from each team, and they're usually really, really insightful. Certainly some of them are. Um, so let me start with this one. Let's start with this one. I'll see if you can guess who this is talking about as I start to read it. All right, that's a fun game. Quote: Remember, this is an opposing Big 12 coach, not necessarily a head coach, could be an assistant coach, an opposing Big 12 coach talking about one team in the Big 12. Quote, I think that once they get the quarterback situation figured out there, they're going to skyrocket. Coach Blank knows how to win there. Every head coach has won there except for Blank. But before that, every coach won big. From blank to blank to blank, they've all won and had a lot of success. And finally, Blank has a really good offensive scheme, and there are certain players down there in state that fit his scheme. Once he gets a quarterback at the level he wants, watch out for them. I'm high on Coach Blank and I'm high on that program. All right, that's pretty strong stuff. Basically, everything in the bottom two quotes can be distilled down to that first quote. I think once they get the quarterback situation figured out there, they're going to skyrocket. Any guesses here? I haven't checked the chat yet. Any guesses here? I see someone says Oklahoma State. That is not correct. Good guess. I see how you got there. But it is not Oklahoma State. It is not Houston either, Fongway. It is not Houston. That is the UCF Knights. We're talking about Scott Frost and UCF. That quote was coach uh Scott Frost knows how to win there. Every head coach has won there except for Gus Milzon. But before that, every coach has won big from George O'Leary to Frost to Josh Heipel. They've all won and had a lot of success. Frost had a good off has uh a really good offensive scheme, and there are certain players down there in Florida that fit his scheme. Uh Lewis, I see what you have in the chat. Keep a hold of that one real quick. This was UCF. Keep a hold of that one. It really makes it seem like coaches saw good things scheme-wise from Scott Frost in year one, which would make sense. Like, I I don't I don't really know that like the the beef at Nebraska did not seem to be that like Frost schematically was not good enough. I don't I don't really think that that's what was going on there. I think it was much more like big picture organizational stuff, not being ready for a lot of the responsibility that came along with that, certain pressures eating at him of being you know back home, quote unquote, maybe some things going on in his personal life, lots of stuff like that. I don't think it was like the scheme part of it. And if we're if you look at their season last year, like I do kind of think they won five games, you start to break it down. It's like, all right, it was Jacksonville State, North Carolina AT, Oklahoma State, who was horrible, West Virginia, North Carolina. But I mean, they they waxed West Virginia and North Carolina. Not saying that they were great teams last year, but they did whack them pretty good. And that was all with not great quarterback play, right? They were having to play multiple different quarterbacks, Taven Jackson for most of the year. You know, you got some Jacurry Brown running the football there, but it was it was not great quarterback play. And this year they're they're bringing in Alonza Barnett, who we saw him in the college football playoff, laying it down pretty well for James Madison. I mean, Barron Morton certainly would kill to have had the day against Oregon's defense in the playoff that Alonze Barnett did. So we'll see. But that I think it will be a step up. I think it will be an improvement. And there are, there's no arguing that there are players in state in Florida that can be very good. Even, I mean, shoot, Gus Malzon was like, at least on paper, recruiting pretty well for a lot of his time at UCF. Like it can be done. So I get where they're coming from here. You can sell me on Scott Frost maturing and getting away from the hometown pressure at Nebraska, getting back to his roots, that he's gonna rediscover something here. Now, I don't think it's ever gonna be 2017 national champions. Shout out to the real 2017 national champions, UCF. Um, I don't think it's gonna be to that level, but would it shock me if UCF went seven and five or eight and four this year? No, it would not. That would not shock me. So I can understand the optimism here. Now, this other team that, according to the anonymous coach quotes, is on the precipice of blowing up, is one that I've actually already talked about here. Okay, I've I've gotten fans of this channel who have who have talked about this and kind of pushed back on it. So let me read you some quotes here again. Quote, literally, the first quote says, quote, it's very similar to UCF. Once they get a trigger man, watch out for them. So the same thing. If they get a quarterback, they're gonna be good. Coach Blank wants to get the speed. Those offenses excel when he's got legit speed at quarterback, at running back, and receiver. I think he's solving that problem through the portal with JUCO recruiting and with high school recruiting down in Florida. Once he gets the speed with the gun run and the quarterback plus one in the run game, they'll have a chance. They didn't have that last year. We played them and they didn't have any team speed. At least not what Coach Blank is used to having. Who do we think that's about? Who do we think that's about? Let's go find it. Let's go find it. Because Lewis already guessed it. Lewis earlier said West Virginia. That is West Virginia. We are talking about West Virginia and UCF here. That is who these anonymous coaches think will blow up once they get good quarterback play, basically, and get faster. Yeah, this is where I'll mention that yes, West Virginia is turning over a huge portion of the roster again. 69 new players this year. Nice. But they've gotten much more talented if you pay close attention to it. Like the talent level has upgraded on paper from what it was before. So it kind of, you know, if you have a bad team and you turn over a bunch of the roster, you can look at that like, oh boy. But you can also look at that like, well, yeah, yeah, they needed to get rid of some of that. And as this coach is saying, like, hey, we played them, they didn't have a lot of speed, they didn't have a lot of talent. It would make sense that Rich Rod is flipping that roster over again. I mean, they've got Cam Cook coming in at running back. I think that'll help a lot with the speed at running back. I mean, Michael Hawkins, you know, he's fast. Michael Hawkins is definitely fast. He's definitely fast. We saw that at Oklahoma. If it's going to be he or Scotty Fox, I think they can be more dynamic and more consistent at quarterback this year. My Big 12 power rankings the other day, I had West Virginia at 10, right? So I was already thinking that they're going to be making a move up, certainly from where they were at last year. Uh, I buy it. And and Rich Rod has a track record of being a very good power four head coach before it crashed and burned at Michigan and then did great things at Jacksonville State, right? Like I think there's there's reason, there's more reason to trust him than there is Scott Frost based on track record there. So I get it. I buy it. I understand where these coaches are coming from. I don't think I would take either of these, uh, either of these coaches to ever replicate the success that they once had at each of these schools, but can they get back to being like eight, like we'll say like seven to nine win programs? Yes, I think that's definitely within the realm of possibility over the next three to five years for sure. And could they this year jump up and win seven to nine games? It would not be a totally shocking development, no. Guys, we I mean, we saw you get the head coach right, we saw Arizona State go from three wins to uh damn near being in the semifinal of the college football playoff and winning the Big 12. So in this league in particular, yes, yes, it is possible. Keep your eye out, keep your eye out on Rich Rod and Scott Frost at UCF in West Virginia. Not just me saying that, it's coaches saying that in the Big 12, all right? No, yes, anonymous coaches, but coaches nonetheless. Thanks for hanging out tonight, guys. Uh, let me make sure. Am I missing a super chat here? I am, Alan. Thank goodness. All right, Alan, I appreciate you, my friend. Great to see you here. Alan says, John, if the whole Big 12 would replicate the Texas Tech Challenge with Texas, what matchups would be the most intriguing? I'd like KU Mizou, Colorado, Nebraska, West Virginia Pit. Would be a bold move by your mark. Rockchalk Jayok Allen. Alan, we are on the same wavelength, my man. I literally had the thought earlier this week, I almost texted it in my Three Maw group chat to Derek and Cole, who do the Three Maw podcast with me. When I saw when I saw that Joey Maguire did that, I was like, hey, could we get um could we get Colin to like say something like that about Nebraska? Can we just get him to be like, hey, Matt Rule, put your money where your mouth is. Come play us week one, anytime, anywhere. You know, forget Tulane. We'll throw Tulane off the schedule this year. Let's play Nebraska. Nichols, go away. We don't need you. We're gonna play Nebraska. That's what I want. I would also love for K-State to play Missouri every year. I that like those are just two regional rivals. I grew up with them, obviously, but they're, you know, they played each other for a hundred years. It's just that I've seen K-State play Mizzou. They've done that non-con series fairly recently. So the one I'm really itching for is Nebraska. I want, I that was the that was the UK-State rivalry in the 90s when I was growing up as a child. And I missed that game dearly. And if it were being played, I mean, the thing that kills me, like if it were if that were played over the last, they left in what, 2011? Taylor Martinez ran all over them in 2010, 2011. If you had played that game the last 15 years, man, I mean, K-State would probably be like, here you go, SEC hypotheticals, K-State would probably be like 12 and 3. You know, I mean that Nebraska program's been so bad. Could have been the era for K State to totally dominate the series. So that's what I would want. But yes, outside of that, you Alan, you know how much I love KU Mizzou. Total travesty that that game's not played every year. Now we're gonna get it this year, of which you know, for that I'm stoked. Colorado, Nebraska, another one that I love. We have I've also seen that recently, and we have seen West Virginia Pitt, but like West Virginia Pitt and KU Mizzou, slightly above Colorado, Nebraska on that in games that just like have to be like you're not doing college football right if you're not playing those games. Full stop, end of sentence. Those games have to be played. They need to be played. Speaking of that, like UCF conversation earlier. UCF's playing Pitt this year. We don't look, no offense, UCF. I don't need you to watch, I don't need to watch you play Pitt. I need to watch West Virginia play Pitt. ESP. That's what I needed every year. So those are good ones. Let me think. Well, you know, I mean TCU, Texas, um, well uh and bedlam. Bedlam. We've got to have Bedlam. That's the other one missing from the list. Throw that on the list of like if you're playing a college football season without KU Missouri, West Virginia Pitt, or Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, you're not playing a college football season. It shouldn't count. It should all be rescinded. We should all just go home. So that's the other one, Alan, would be Bedlam. We gotta have Bedlam. Uh Alan, thank you for being here. Great stuff. Great question. Great mind. Great minds think alike. Great minds think alike. Okay. Uh please like the video on the way out. I would appreciate that if you subscribe to the channel.
