Ever been denied a promotion—then asked to train the person who got the job? That gut punch isn’t just disrespectful, it’s a warning sign. In this episode, Big Slick breaks down a listener’s story that exposes one of the most common workplace traps: unpaid training disguised as “shadowing.”
We unpack why being asked to train someone above your pay grade is about control, leverage, and free labor, not development. You’ll learn how vague language like “help them get up to speed” quietly expands your role while shrinking your value—and why teaching a higher position can actually put a target on your back.
This episode gives you real scripts and strategies to protect yourself:
- How to say no without burning bridges
- What to put in writing to define your role
- When to ask for extra pay or a formal trainer title
- How to spot when the issue isn’t skill—but politics, preference, or bias
We also lay out a step-by-step exit plan if it’s time to move on:
Keep your income while you interview. Update your resume with measurable wins. Secure off-platform references. Create a paper trail that protects your reputation. And when the right offer comes, leave clean—with momentum intact.
If they want your knowledge but not your promotion, that’s your signal to level up elsewhere.

SPEAKER_00Now let's talk about it. What up, what up, what up, what up? Welcome to Talk Your Shit. And I'm your host, Big Slick. We got another great episode for you today. But first, I want to give a shout out to all my listeners out there. Whether you're at home, at work, in your car, all the truck drivers on the road, I appreciate you tuning in. Look, check this out. We got another great letter in. I'm about to read it off right now, jump right into it and give you my honest, uncut, unfiltered opinion. Because that's what I do, man. Let's jump right into it. I didn't get the promotion I wanted, but they want me to train the person that did. Should I quit or train them wrong on purpose? Y'all, this right here is crazy. This this is about to be fun. So you went out for a position, right? They shut you down, right? You apply for the position, you had a job, you like, yo, cool. Well, they're gonna promote within. You didn't get the promotion, and now they want you to train the person that did. What type of shit is going on here, man? First of all, if you training somebody that got the promotion that you wanted, that means that that person is over you, right? Because it's a it's a promotion. You went out for a promotion. So that means that person is over you already. So that means they want you to train your boss. Where the fuck do they do that at? I can't even get the words out. What the the crazy thing is about this that a lot of people fall into this trap and they do this shit. Don't do it. First of all, you don't supposed to train up, you don't supposed to train up. Why would you train your boss? That shit makes no sense to me. No, no, do not train this person that just came in. Don't don't do it because first of all, you're not a supervisor. Now, if you were a supervisor, then that's in your job description. You supposed to train on a job. If you're a manager, that's in your job description. You're supposed to train on a job, and you're supposed to know every position on a job. You know what I'm saying? That's what you're supposed to do. But if you're not one of those, you shouldn't be training nobody. And a lot of jobs out here is pimping people, man. They in the pimping business. Let me tell you this. I know everybody heard this shit before. Check this shit out, man. Just listen, pay attention, come in closer. Pay attention. Have you ever heard this on a job? Hey, we got somebody new that started today. I want them to shadow you. You know that's cold word for I want them to, I want you to train them, right? You know that's a cold word for you to fucking train them for free, and you're not even a supervisor. I want them to shadow you. I don't need a fucking shadow. I got my own shadow. What the fuck? I need a shadow for. I don't need that. People start saying no, man. Stop training people for free. It's not in your job description, man. If you're not a supervisor, you shouldn't be training no fucking body. Don't do it. And you like, should you train them wrong? Fuck it, go for it. Why not? Why not? It's not your job, anyway, bro. And then for them to go, look, we want you to train this person for the job you went out for. It's crazy. That shit is crazy work. And you know what's gonna happen after you finish training this person to be your boss, they're gonna fire your ass. You know why? Because you're a threat, you know too much. You know my job. You train me. Obviously, you know my job. Why would I keep you here? Why would I keep you working under me? You a threat to me. So once I learn everything, you know, I'm gonna get your ass up out of there. That's another reason why you don't train up. That's why, man. A lot of people gotta realize this shit. Train the motherfucker wrong. I train them in reverse. The shit you supposed to do first on the job, I had a motherfucker doing that shit last. Yeah, I'm saying I do everything backwards for this dude if y'all want to play with me like that, or I'll be doing and real quick so he can't see it. What you just did, don't worry about that. That's not important. Have him blowing the job up or something. Listen, people, stop it. Don't don't don't do it, man. That's it's advice out there for all y'all, man. Don't fucking train somebody if you're not a supervisor, bruh, and don't quit. Not yet. If you don't got no job, don't quit. If you don't got another job, don't quit. But once you get another motherfucking job, just don't come back to work, don't show up, don't do a two weeks notice. I don't believe in two weeks' notices. Fuck that shit. Just leave, have them looking for you the next day. Where you go? Is he is he here? Nope. I ain't coming back. Fuck all of y'all. Fuck that job, man. That's my advice to you. Don't train this guy or whoever it is, don't train him and find another job, man, because they don't appreciate you there. And another thing on top of that is this if they want you to train the person that got the promotion that you wanted to get, that means you have the skill set for the job. So they just don't fucking like you. It's just what it is, bro. They just don't like you. It's not that you don't have the skill set because they want you to train the person. They just don't like you. You know what I'm saying? So I would leave. That's what I would do. This is another easy one. It's another easy one for me, man. This is what I do, man. This is big slick. Go talk your shit. You know what we do around here, man. Listen, if you want to send a letter in, just send it to talk your shit daily at gmail.com. That's talkyour shit daily at gmail.com. Or we can make it real quick. Just throw it down in the comments, man. Any topic you want me to discuss, throw it in the comments. I snatch it up, I fuck around and put it on the next show. You already know this is what I do is big slick and I'm out.
