How to Grocery Shop Like a Pro
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The weekly grocery shop: somehow we all do it, and yet somehow we’re still buying too much, forgetting what we already have, and watching half of it go to waste.
In this episode, we’re talking about how to grocery shop more efficiently and sustainably — from planning what you actually need to avoiding those impulse buys and making the most of what you bring home.
Less waste, less money wasted, and hopefully fewer sad vegetables at the back of the fridge. 🥦

Attention, all shoppers. Today's episode is 50% off.
SPEAKER_03Please make sure to follow your shopping list and definitely listen to the end of the episode if you want to hear some funny stories. Wanna find out how long it took Lydia to unlock her bike today? Any guesses? An hour? Two hours? Listen to the end to find out.
SPEAKER_04What's up, Ace Judas?
SPEAKER_01On the microphone, you've got Amy and Lydia. Woop woo! We're back with another Thursday episode as always. We're back with this will be on the test. Will this be on the test? Some of it might.
SPEAKER_03I mean, like you listen to this, maybe. So make sure to grab a notebook and a pen. Because this will be on the test. Well, you just got back from a trip. I did. And I'm a little sleepy because I just had my first day of school.
SPEAKER_00Fun. But Oh, today was your first day of school. Somehow I thought it was last week.
SPEAKER_03No, today was the first day.
SPEAKER_00How was it? How are you?
SPEAKER_03And I'm a l I have a bit of a cold too, which is fun.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's fun. Why not have it all at once?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. First day was good. There was I got a new student and I went to well, I so I kept the class, so all my students are the same, except for one kid came new. And I went to go say hi to his mom. And she was like, Yeah, he's very shy until he's not. I was like, okay. He was not shy. Like he was shy maybe for 20 minutes. And then afterwards it was like it was good. How was your um solar eclipse in Spain?
SPEAKER_01It was really cool. Um I I think we once saw a solar eclipse when we were kids. I'm not sure if you were born yet, but I remember sitting in the bayou and like the sky going dark. Um but it was really cool. I really underestimated how cool a solar like a full solar eclipse would be. Because I've seen like partial, but the moment where the moon actually fully covers the sun is like insane. Because you can actually take off your glasses and look at it, and like everything's dark, and it's just like this ring in the sky. It's really cool. It only lasts like a minute and a half, but it was so worth traveling for, which is surprising, I think.
SPEAKER_03You guys slept on a racetrack, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we slept at a parking lot, but it was on the racetrack, and like on it's a Formula One racetrack, and like in the middle of the racetrack, there's this hill. And okay, so like from that hill you had a really good vantage point because it was the sun was setting in Spain when the solar eclipse happened. So, like, we had a great view of it happening because we were up on this.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. That's nice. Yeah, it was really cool. That's very nice. It was very cool. You guys tented on the parking lot, yes.
SPEAKER_01But it was like a gravel parking lot. We we brought our own tent, and uh Mike and Annabelle gave us their inflatable mattress, so it was great. Oh, nice, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Would you rather pay double the amount for groceries, but it's done for you and delivered, or get your groceries for free, but you have to do the shopping for your whole building?
SPEAKER_01I feel like this is unfair because I live in a big city. I live on the seventh floor of a building which has multiple floors, and I did the math. There are over 32 apartments.
SPEAKER_02So I would have to quit my job just to be able to do the shopping or at least reduce down to 50% like this. But I also like I wouldn't want to pay double the amount of groceries. I think I would still go for the free groceries and just reduce my my work percentage.
SPEAKER_03Wow. In your building. There's so see, because I would definitely go for that. Yeah, because you have like three apartments.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, exactly. That's that's such an easy choice.
SPEAKER_03Like a no-brainer. But you would go for it.
SPEAKER_01That is I mean free groceries.
SPEAKER_03I would get you need to get a car though.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But I would save so much money. You know how much money you spend in a year for groceries? And I would buy bougie shit for that.
SPEAKER_03How much money you spend in a year on a car?
SPEAKER_02Definitely not more than groceries.
SPEAKER_03I mean, free groceries would be dope. But some people in not this building, but the one across, they ha do the whole deliver it to your home. I mean, same spread to mass.
SPEAKER_01I mean, can I order in bulk? Do I get to decide what my neighbors eat?
SPEAKER_03Oh. No.
SPEAKER_01I get a shopping list from 32 different apartments.
SPEAKER_03I don't know. Let's say you have to do 10 other apartments.
SPEAKER_01Okay, yeah. But you do as well then.
SPEAKER_02You have to do it in it for everyone in your neighborhood, and I do my apartment building.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. I mean, yeah. But then I would just order it. No, but that's not allowed.
SPEAKER_01I think you're not allowed to, yeah. You would need a car.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I guess. I don't know. Honestly, no, I'd probably end up working less and just go grocery shopping.
SPEAKER_01I think so. Right? Like, if I made a lot of money. Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Like, I don't save any money through this because I'm working less, but I work less and I go grocery shopping and all my groceries are free free. Yeah. Yeah. Having said that, if ten of my uh neighbors came up to me and were like, we'll pay from your for your groceries from now on if you go grocery shopping for us as well. That would seem weird to me, and I might say no to that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah, that's fair. That's how the question is. That's from the Magic Fairy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, definitely Magic Fairy. Would you rather have a salesperson follow you around the store or have a security guard watch you from the distance while you shop? But like watch you.
SPEAKER_03I I have a thing about being followed.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03Like also when my students walk behind me because I have a c they have a question. I hate it. So I think I would have to be watched by a security guard. Also because I don't look dangerous or scary. That's what you think. I wouldn't assume. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You look like a shopping guy.
SPEAKER_03I do?
SPEAKER_01Maybe.
SPEAKER_03Once I got checked at the airport and they were so thorough about it. And then this random guy looked at me at the end of it and he's like, oh yeah, because you look real dangerous. Oh, that's adorable.
SPEAKER_04So I guess that's a fair point.
SPEAKER_03Um, so I think the security guard like I wouldn't be too worried about it because I would think I don't know, I wouldn't assume that he thinks that I'm doing something wrong.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I would pick this thing.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Blonde hair, white female for sure. Yeah. I think as well.
SPEAKER_02Also, like if I see a security guard eyeing me, I usually like smile because I like I don't know why you looking, why are you checking me out? And they're like, what do you have in your bag?
SPEAKER_01Um like why you think my phone is in here? Um, no. But having a salesperson follow you, like I walk out of shops if salespeople are like, I'll be here to help you, and are just like lingering. I'm like, okay, I don't need anything from the shop.
SPEAKER_03I hate it.
SPEAKER_01Do it.
SPEAKER_03I don't I don't need an emo emotional support human. Yeah. Goal one.
SPEAKER_02I put my AirPods in, but I can still peel them around.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, yeah. No, it's the worst. Leave me alone. They're just waiting for you to have a question. Yeah, no, I can't do it. I'm going with the security guard.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Okay, I think we both are. I found a Reddit post for this week's episode that I thought was fitting. Um, so hey guys, I'm a 26-year-old female that sucks at grocery shopping for myself. I go down I go down every aisle and never seem to buy things that make actual meals or things that sustain me. This results in me eating out way more than I care to. I'm not really on a strict diet and I'm not picky, but I'm trying to eat clean. Do you guys have like a universal slash basic grocery list that I can use as a starting point?
SPEAKER_03Nice. I love this one. Um, I do have a basic grocery list that I can share with this person. I think we should do that at the end though.
SPEAKER_01Ooh, or yeah, we could like share it on our socials.
SPEAKER_03That we can do too. I can make an Instagram post. Noise. Yes.
SPEAKER_01Okay, but we do have some basic grocery shopping tips before we go get into like a basic grocery list, right? All right. Yeah, I would do that. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Um, I wrote down that guys, guys, don't shop when you're hungry.
SPEAKER_01And I wrote down yuff.
SPEAKER_04Amy wrote down Y A S S in caps exclamation voice.
SPEAKER_02That happens to me way more often than I want to admit that I go shopping hungry and eats like I buy such random shit.
SPEAKER_03And when I random.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's such a waste of money. But that can be like a vacation avoidance.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Like you can still do it. Because I do think it's a little fun, because you buy a lot of random snacks and then you get to try a lot of random snacks, but not on an average week.
SPEAKER_03And if you can't avoid it, then maybe you can be like, okay, this is the one thing I'm getting because I'm hungry, and the rest I'm gonna try to be rational about it, you know? Like this is the one treat I'm gonna get for myself.
SPEAKER_01Or go into the store, buy that one treat, and eat it while you're shopping. And you buy your oven.
SPEAKER_03You can't do that.
SPEAKER_01No?
SPEAKER_03I feel so illegal doing that.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I have the receipt in my pocket.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you go, you buy it?
SPEAKER_01Oh, yes. I actually like I go buy it and then I continue shopping while I'm snacking. And if anybody's like, what are you doing? I'm like, no, no, I just bought this. I just I'm very hungry. I can't wait.
SPEAKER_04I needed to do a round one. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's a weird thing to explain to someone. But like I could not wait these 10 minutes that it takes me in a grocery shop.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But it makes me feel less uh ma'am.
SPEAKER_03This is 1129 and it's 1130 now. What are you thinking?
SPEAKER_02Chipmunks cheeks, and you're like, Yeah, I mean that's that's one idea.
SPEAKER_03Um don't go when you're hungry though. You can avoid it. Just don't. And then what Julia and I do, and I don't know if even you wrote this down or I did, is we make a rough plan for the week, but this is also because I have a roommate, and then it makes sense to like ask when are you home for dinner? What should we cook? And so it's kind of aligned. I think but I think even if I wasn't living with a roommate, I would plan it out either on paper or in my head, what do I roughly want to make this week?
SPEAKER_01I think that makes sense. I think Tarek and I tried to do this and realize it's not really our style, but what we do have is like our key meals that we go to and our key ingredients. So it's never like sometimes one of us is like, I'm gonna cook this meal and I need these ingredients, but usually we just have like a a basic stock in our fridge that you can make different meals with. But it is like a rough plan. Yeah, that would be my next thing is like have your go-to items slash meals. And if you live with someone to also know what their go-to items and meals are, and like which brand, even like on the top of our shared grocery list, uh Tarek has a like his preference of brands because he's particular about like which corn we buy and stuff. And I was like, you just have to tell me which shop it's in and which brand, and then I won't get the wrong one anymore. I still do, but like less often.
SPEAKER_03I won't. I will, but I won't. I think on that note, when you're starting your grocery journey, I think you get into like these rhythms very easily. So in the beginning it's gonna suck a little bit or it's gonna take a little more time, but it's worth it to check where your products come from and how they're produced before you start buying something regularly that might be really bad for the environment because it's coming from a place far away or the animals aren't treat being treated well or stuff like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So, like when it comes to fruits and veg, I would check where it's coming from.
SPEAKER_01And which season it's grown in.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I have a cutoff in my head. We live in Switzerland, and I don't I try not to do like anywhere further than Spain. That's just I I don't like that might not make sense, but I like I feel like okay, that's a distance that is still okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think for me that's like a 24-hour travel, right? If it's traveling by truck.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I also have Spain in my head.
SPEAKER_03But then if if if I can get stuff from Switzerland, I do, obviously.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But but sometimes I will say that's difficult for me when I see like Spanish avocados that are four francs and the Peruvian avocados are one franc, and I'm like, ugh, damn it. Yeah, I agree. It's not always a fun choice, but I also wrote down to have a shared grocery list if you live with someone. Like Tarek and I have a shared grocery list, and we started on notes, and now we have reminder, and on the top we have our favorites, like I said, of like staples.
SPEAKER_03I'm so glad you brought this up, guys. Reminders is so cool. It is cool. You can set up a grocery list and then it'll sort it by produce.
SPEAKER_01By like category.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Dairy, starch.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's great.
SPEAKER_03It's so cool. It makes shopping so much easier because usually you have the dairy area, you'll have the fruit supporti area, and like this is the best.
SPEAKER_05It is. It is very good.
SPEAKER_03The only thing is, whenever you put in a new item, depending on what your settings are, it'll notify the other person that you put in a new item.
SPEAKER_04Yes. So Naomi, when we lived together, she hated that I used reminders because she would always get notifications of me adding to the grocery list.
SPEAKER_01Also, like if you're not adding, because I will think about it and be like, oh, and we need this. And then like three minutes later, oh and we need this, and Tarek will just get reminders every few minutes.
SPEAKER_02But he does the same thing. So we're just like we both ignore them.
SPEAKER_03We said this on the roommates. So many things are coming back now. We've done so many episodes. Um Living with the Roommate, we talked about how Julie and I we go shopping once a week.
SPEAKER_01Together.
SPEAKER_03I know this is together. This is very like, depending on your personality. I love it. And I would recommend it. Especially if you don't like if you feel like grocery shopping is a bit of a hassle, if you can like plan it out and then buy just the bulk things once a week. Like we go and buy our milk and cottage cheese and stuff that we eat every week that we know for sure we need a lot of. And then if I realize, hey, I want to make this meal, I'll go and get that, but then it's a five-minute trip and not a 20-minute trip every time. I can really recommend that.
SPEAKER_01Also, it's a fun bonding thing to do. Like I like going grocery shopping with Tarek.
SPEAKER_03So nice. Yeah. And then sometimes she'll get something that she wants, but then I'll get something that I want. And if we go shopping together, it's just easier to divvy that up to right away. Makes it less complicated.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I wrote down a few random things. Like I wrote down from to familiarize yourself with a few stores in your area. Yeah. Because I do think there are like certain products I buy at Aldi, certain products I buy at Migro, and certain products I buy at Cope. And like I can buy them all at Cope, I can buy them all at Migro, and I can buy them all at Aldi, but I do have like my go-to in each shop.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, and I think that takes a little time, but it's nice.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Yes, I was gonna say that. And I think also that it's not necessarily the shop that your parents went to that's gonna be the shop that you go to. And it's expensive, guys.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you can try out a different shop. Like I realized I don't we're in Switzerland. I don't go to Denner. Like ever. No.
SPEAKER_03And I realize maybe I should try it. Denner has dope falafals in the frozen area. Best falafels I have had.
SPEAKER_01This was gonna be one of my tips that I forgot to write down is buy frozen vegetables. Especially if you Oh, you did? Nice. Oh, cool. Perfect. Okay. Um I think what for me also goes into the don't go shopping hungry is I try not to go shopping at the end of a work day if I don't have a list. Because decision fatigue at the end of the day for me is at its peak. And then I will just kind of walk through a grocery store and one of two things will happen. I will get overwhelmed that I don't know what I'm buying and just kind of freak out in the store and like be super tired and walk out with like I don't know, cauliflower and that's it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Or like cauliflower and chocolate pudding, and I'm like, I don't even know what made me buy these two things.
SPEAKER_01Um or I just like over purchase as if I'm hungry. So I feel like if you're gonna go later in the day, which is realistic for most people who work nine to five or whatever your work hours are, I think then having a list and having a plan ahead of time saves so much stress and energy.
SPEAKER_03I completely agree with that. I love having a shopping list. I'm like somebody who loves structure. And so this is why I also love that Julie and I go shopping on Mondays usually. Like this Monday is a bad example because we're recording, we couldn't go, but I went to one store and she went to the other, and so we kind of that's also good. And since we know we're going shopping on Mondays, we make the list on Sunday or on Monday after work. And so you kind of like start thinking about what you'll need also. I agree. Make a list, guys. It's great. Yeah, I love having a shopping list.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think also just like I mean, like share your we're gonna share our basic shopping list now. And I think week to week my basic shopping list does not change that much.
SPEAKER_03No. Yeah. Is a fair point? Yeah, if you have it on if you have it on notes, you could just have the same list every week.
SPEAKER_01And then or like on any note-taking app that you use Notion or Reminders or I don't know what all of them are.
SPEAKER_03What we actually have, I didn't write this down, but this is actually pretty nifty. Um we have a piece of paper and a pen, like a like sticky notes and a pen in a drawer next to the fridge.
SPEAKER_05That's a great idea.
SPEAKER_03And so if something runs out, we'll jot it down there quickly. Yeah. And then when we make the list, it's not like oh, what ran out this week. It's more like what do we want to make? Oh, and this ran out.
SPEAKER_01Nice. That's smart. Especially for bulk out items.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah, like dishwasher tabs or like dishwasher salt, which we had to replace recently. You don't think about that if you don't write it down right away.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Okay, do you want to share your list? Because I it looks like we have very similar lists. I might just like add it.
SPEAKER_03Um I try to do it based on how the store is structured that we always go shopping in. And this is how I'll post it on Instagram too, guys. So I thought I had for you listeners.
SPEAKER_01I totally also do so.
SPEAKER_03So when you walk into the store. I only do this since um um since dating Dumeney.
SPEAKER_01That makes sense.
SPEAKER_03That's how his brain works. Yeah. And I remember we went shopping once. Oh, and you know shopping with mom is so chaotic, right? But I love it. But like our mom, she usually there's no well there will be a list sometime, but it's more of a suggestion that it is a list, really. And I remember we went grocery shopping with her, and it's like, oh, we need eggs, and then we'll walk back to the eggs, and then like, oh we need this, and then we'll walk back to the veggies. And we don't go like in order. And for him that did not like cooperate with his brain, he's like, Why wouldn't you guys make a list? And why wouldn't you order it based on how the store is set up? This is not making any sense.
SPEAKER_02That sounds like to me.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so this is why I did it. Um, anyway. Every week we will buy fruits and veggies. And the veggies will always consist of zucchetti.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_03Is that the same in English?
SPEAKER_01Uh zucchini.
SPEAKER_03Zucchini.
SPEAKER_01For me it's broccoli.
SPEAKER_03Zucchini? Okay. And cauliflower.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Sorry.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_03We don't really buy broccoli and cauliflower so much.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03But because I think it's because um zucchini doesn't go bad as quickly.
SPEAKER_01It does in our fridge.
SPEAKER_02Sometimes broccoli and cauliflower get eaten super quick. I think you have to figure out your veggies. Like Tarek and I eat broccoli and cauliflower, like there's no tomorrow. Zucchini has gone bad in our fridge multiple times.
SPEAKER_03Crazy. Yeah. Okay, no, for us it's the other way around. Okay, so we'll buy zucchini, bell peppers, um, and tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes. And onion if we don't have any, but usually we'll just stock up on onions. And those I feel like are like basics for uh tomato sauce with veggies in it or some kind of like curry sauce you can throw it in. Just it goes with most things. And then we'll also buy lettuce and cucumber for like a snack or a salad or something.
SPEAKER_00I would add carrots.
SPEAKER_03And then fruits. Carrots are a good one. Thank you. And then fruits, I always buy bananas because I like to make a banana smoothie with some protein powder. And apples because I think apples is a great snack and it holds for quite a while.
SPEAKER_01I'm with you on the apple train.
SPEAKER_03If you put apples in a keep them in a dark space. So if you have like a cupboard that you can put them in, then they hold for quite a while.
SPEAKER_01Also, apples just hold forever. Um, I would add seasonal fruits, depending on what's in season, and I buy frozen blueberries because I like to put blueberries in my smoothie.
SPEAKER_03Yes, but that's in the frozen section.
SPEAKER_01Oh sorry. Right.
SPEAKER_02I forgot we were. Okay, okay, okay, okay. Sorry about that.
SPEAKER_03No, but frozen berries for real. Just check where you buy them though, because in some places they're so expensive. And then other places it's a very fair price. Like, I wouldn't get the frozen berries at co-op, but anyway. Um, just because they're really expensive, they're delicious. Then going to like dairy products, we always buy cottage cheese. Yes, like cottage cheese is super healthy and goes with a lot of things. And then we'll always buy some cream because cream holds for a long time. And you can use it in a lot of sauces like pasta. Sometimes we'll put it in a curry sauce.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. Can I add coconut milk?
SPEAKER_03We don't have any. Yes, we often buy coconut milk.
SPEAKER_01I feel like those are I usually tend more towards coconut milk than cream for some reason. I don't know why. Fair enough. But we always have cream because Tarek uses it to bake. So like I always have that option.
SPEAKER_03And then what else is on my list is pasta. And what I what I recently discovered through a friend of mine, shout out, you know who you are. Tender wheat. What the hell is tender wheat in English? It's ebli in German. And it's like this whole grain. It feels like rice, but more healthy when you eat it. It's like a whole grain kind of thing, kind of like Gerste. That it cooks so fast. It cooks in 10 minutes in water. And I started making that with my curries. Durham wheat. Delicious. Durham. Durham wheat. Okay. Ten out of ten. I can recommend. You get it at little. You can probably get it in other places, but I don't usually get it at little. So good.
SPEAKER_00Never tried it.
SPEAKER_03It's very good. Alright. It's also very inexpensive and quite healthy. Yeah. And then I also have yogurt. I usually go for Greek yogurt because I like it better.
SPEAKER_01I am more on the regular yogurt, but yes.
SPEAKER_03Both are fine. And then moving to the frozen section. We always get the frozen Thai veggies. Because those have like nice veggies that I wouldn't buy otherwise. Okay. And frozen veggies are very healthy and they're just so easy. They're just so easy. If you don't feel like cutting up veggies, you can just put those in a curry again. I make a lot of curry. That's just so simple. 10 out of 10. Would recommend.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I wouldn't get the seasoned ones.
SPEAKER_00No, I've done I've made that mistake before.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it's not a mistake. It's also like I think they're totally fine. I just don't love the seasoning on there. Like it's not my taste profile that I would go for. But it's not bad per se. Like if you don't know how to season your food, I do think it's a good like step in the right direction.
SPEAKER_03It's a good step in the right direction, but this person said that they just want don't want processed foods. That's a lot of things. I would go with the unseasoned. Yeah. Yeah. Um and then you would get your frozen berries in the frozen section also. And what I always have in my pantry is peanut butter.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I think this like this is a good basic go-to shopping list. It's not like the bulk items. I mean, pasta, yes. I also usually buy pesto. And if I'm very honest, I usually have at least two packs of ramen in my cupboards because I know myself. Eggs, but that's not a weekly purchase for me because I don't eat enough eggs, but I do like having eggs around. Um, but this is a good basic list for like what I need in a week: milk.
SPEAKER_03And with the ramen, if you have the Thai veggies and the coconut milk, guys, you can cook up some ramen, put some veggies in there so you get a bit of nutrition. Coconut milk just makes it even better. And if you have an egg, crack an egg in there.
SPEAKER_01Or cheddar cheese. Or like any kind of cheese in ramen.
SPEAKER_03I've heard this. Oh, it's so good.
SPEAKER_05It's so good.
SPEAKER_03I need to try it. But I think you told me about this before.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think Anna and I were talking about it on the Bachelorette trip quite often.
SPEAKER_04That's possible.
SPEAKER_02We also went home that night and sent each other pictures of our because she was like, guys, I totally recommend and you send a picture of like shredded cheese and ramen. I was like, dude, that was my dinner.
SPEAKER_01All right. So we will, or Lydia will post a comprehensible list on our Instagram if you wanna like, if you want something to start off of. Um, I think the homework for today though, actually, if I can change it from what we wrote down, is to make your basic list. Like just write down your recurring list, your go-to. So when decision fatigue hits, when hunger hits, you have your basic ingredients that you know how to cook a meal out of, I would say. And snacks. Funny schnorries. Was that not on purpose?
SPEAKER_04I thought that was a perfect one and the laughed. I wouldn't have noticed.
SPEAKER_02I'm sorry. Don't know what happened.
SPEAKER_03Sure. My funny story is actually something else. It's from today. Funny enough.
SPEAKER_02I got a great time. I got a voice note.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Amy already kind of knows what happens because she got a voice note. Guys, I have this really old bike lock that I got from Naomi. Very kind that I got it from her because it's like a heavy-duty bike lock. Like, I'm never scared that my bike's gonna get stolen with this one. Um, you know it's not gonna get stolen. I know it's not gonna get stolen.
SPEAKER_02Even if someone has a key. Sorry.
SPEAKER_03It was raining a little bit today. I was already annoyed because I went to my second dentist appointment and I went there and they're like, um, yeah, we need to do this next time, so you have to come again. Where I was like, guys, I've been here twice already, like, do something already. Anyway, not part of the story. And then I went into the grocery store, came out, and I couldn't open my fucking bike lock. I could not, it would not go. Like, sometimes I have to turn it because it's an old lock, and you know you kind of have to like do it with love and care. Nothing. No love, violence, nothing was working. I tried for 20 minutes, did not work. Went into the store, it's like, guys, do you have WD 40? Do you have like some kind of lubricant for this lock? She's like, she checked, she's like, no, but I can give you I can give you this tool, just like random tool that she got out of drill, a drawer. I was like, no thanks.
SPEAKER_04Went back, tried for another 10 minutes, wouldn't budge, went to a different store, had to wait there for 15 minutes because this guy was taking his sweet ass time ordering a random coffee filter and nobody was free at the desk.
SPEAKER_03And it was this kind of thing where I was like, okay, I don't I think he's almost done. I think he's almost done. I think, you know, because otherwise I would have walked back out. They didn't have WD-40. And this kind man was willing to come out and help me, but he was swamped, and I was like, no, you definitely don't have to do that. So I ended up walking back to my apartment, going to my car to get WD-40 that I had in my car for emergencies, walking back to my bicycle, spraying the shit out of the bike lock, and then trying again for another five minutes, and then it worked.
SPEAKER_01And you got your 10,000 steps in.
SPEAKER_03I was so pissed. I've never wanted to. That's not true. There have been a few moments where I wanted to teleport more than that moment. And I was like, if I could just be at my bicycle right now, yeah. So that was my grocery shopping experience today. That sucked.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01To be fair, the grocery shopping went okay. It was the biking.
SPEAKER_03Imagine if I hadn't had a list.
SPEAKER_02Especially you come out and you're like, what have I bought? And then you try to open your bike and you're like, no.
SPEAKER_01What have I done?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, my funny story goes more into the tips because I was writing down tips and then I started chuckling to myself of like, this is what ideal Amy does. And ideal Amy is around some of the times and not all of the times.
SPEAKER_02Tarek and I have a shared list that he definitely uses 100% of the time because he, I don't know, doesn't fluctuate his hormones once a month. Uh, I don't know what it is, but he is able to stick to this list.
SPEAKER_01And I honestly get into the store and sometimes forget that I have a list and I walk around and I buy the basics because I know what the basics are.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But then I'll come home and he'll be like, Did you get this?
SPEAKER_02And I was like, no, how was I supposed to know you needed that? And he was like, 'cause it's on the grocery list.
SPEAKER_04So now. How is that supposed to reach your mind?
SPEAKER_02We have a grocery list, but we also text each other before we go to the store because we know I'm not reliable enough to write the We know I'm not reliable. So just before this episode started, he texted me. What do you need from the story?
SPEAKER_01So you know. I am still a work in progress as it comes to adulting. I've realized.
SPEAKER_03Aren't we all? Aren't we all?
SPEAKER_01Let's wrap it up. Have fun shopping.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Have fun shopping. Make a good list. Don't be an asshole.
