SPEAKER_01We have big goals. We have big goals. Like we said from the beginning that we have a good feeling about this, yeah. And I think the the goal is that this does become a thing, like that we grow listeners, like we grow listenership, and that we can also make some money off of it so that we can maybe work less in the job that we have now and start a little community of helping each other and learning together. I mean, that would be so cool if like if I can if I can share my dreams, which I think sharing dreams is like a very vulnerable thing in a way. Yeah. But if one day we could like have camps or something where we meet out up and we share skills, like I teach how to make bread, somebody else teaches this, and it's like a week vacation where you go and learn skills from each other. I think that would be so cool. So that's uh yeah, I think that's my dream.
SPEAKER_00If we can get our funny because I've been making my Pinterest manifestation board, and there are so many of like people sitting in a circle. A lot of the times it's mainly women, and I was like, how cool would it be to just have like this group come together where you get to learn life skills as an adult, which is what we're trying to do, but like build this community so that we can help each other out. And this has been like so much in my head, so hearing you say it is kind of funny. Um so yeah.

SPEAKER_01We're gonna deliver. So obviously. Would you rather have to borrow tools from your friend every time you want to hang a picture or try to hang everything in your apartment with a um sticky tack. Sticky tack. Um, I feel like I don't know what a sticky ta is.
SPEAKER_00Uh you know, like that, the sticky stuff. Oh, put on the wall. Oh, I choose that. See, this to me, that's when you are in university and you have like a room to decorate. Yeah. Like you put sticky tayw. That was definitely how I like everything with sticky tech. I find sticky tech so annoying though, because if you have to take sticky ta off, sometimes it ruins the walls. That's true. And like it is a bit when you move off. And then if you try to, like, you have to put everything with sticky tech. So if you want a hanger on the wall, you have to try to do that with sticky tech, which never works. Even those like they they're so adhesive, they can hold 20 kilos, and then you hang like a piece of string and it falls down, and you're like, wow, okay, you're full of shit. Um no, I 100% make friends with tools.
SPEAKER_01Could I like no, I was gonna grab my phone. Could I use something else than other than a hammer to we've all been there? Could I get a rock from outside and just kind of have at it? Or is that not allowed?
SPEAKER_00What's your most creative thing that you've ever used as a hammer?
SPEAKER_01I tried a shoe, didn't work.
SPEAKER_00I tried a snow globe. That's a horrible idea. Not the glass part, the base.
SPEAKER_01Oh, still a horrible idea.

SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's you got me beat. I've never tried anything that stupid. Look. Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna make friends.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I see what you see, what you mean with the sticky tech. Also, I don't need tools that often. No. I'm not hanging up pictures very like when you move in. Yeah, then that's fine. You get to know your neighbors. Exactly. Yeah. Okay. Would you rather have to build all your furniture like IKEA furniture or have it all come assembled, but you have to get it into the correct room. Now, I'm not quite sure what you mean by this.
SPEAKER_00So, like your bed is delivered, assembled, but you have to get it up the stairs and into the room. By yourself. You can do it with a friend or whatever, but Oh.
SPEAKER_01I had this with my couch, and it was just Domane and I, and we were so overconfident. We're we didn't even think that it would be hard. And we carried my couch up, just the two of us. And it was so hot that day, it was over 30 degrees. And the couch was wrapped in like this cellophane plastic, so it was slippery and sticky. And sounds fun. It was fun. I choose the building the furniture. A hundred percent. Hate carrying furniture.
SPEAKER_00Also, if you like, if you're slightly off with how big the door frames are and then it doesn't fit and you're like so annoying.

SPEAKER_00If you have the right tools, if you don't have the right tools, it has maybe led me to cry maybe before. But you know, would you rather your hands be replaced with hammers or tongs?

SPEAKER_00Would you rather have a hammer hand or like a tongue hand? I mean, the answer is so obvious. Tongs. You have to have tongs. Can I have one of each? But if I had hammer. I had hammer in the morning. It's just teacher coming back, you guys.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, I don't know that there's any the hammer like has the wrench on the back, I'm assuming. Like you have a hammer with the with the crowbar on the back, kind of.
SPEAKER_00It's not a wrench, it's a crowbar. It's not, no, it's the I don't know what it's called. Crowbar. It's not a crowbar. A crowbar is a very specific tool. It's like the nail remover. Google this. Because a wrench is like the. It's not a what's on the back of a hammer? A nail remover. What is it called? Nail pullers.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Well, nail pullers. Wow. Yeah, the tongs are of choice, but I thought it was a funny question. I just I just thought the picture your hands as hammers. I don't know. It's a funny image. It is. And then you you know sometimes when you swing around too quick and you actually accidentally hit somebody. You would become a murderer very quickly. Yeah. I don't know when it's an advantage. When you need to hammer a nail.
SPEAKER_00When you even something up, no, no. So you can't even hold the nail. Although, you know that the the back of the thing. Yeah. It holds nails perfectly.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.

SPEAKER_01But still, you have to get that somehow in there. Yeah. And then yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Definitely tongs. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Let's get into it. Yeah. Very short Reddit question. If you were to start from the beginning and buy all new new tools, which would you buy and how would you organize them?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So we grew up in a wannabe handy household, I was like, we grew up.
SPEAKER_00She's not wrong. We're all handy-ish.
SPEAKER_01We're all handy-ish. Like not wannabe handy is like too demeaning. We are all handy, but we were never very precise about how the handy was. So we can build shit, but it might be a little crooked. There you go. There you go. But due to this, we know when you can use a bit of duct tape to get things to stick. Yes. And so we're not the people to say go and buy all the fancy tools. It's more like this is what you need so that you get by.
SPEAKER_00And I wrote down, like, okay, I love having tools in my apartment. Yeah. The tools that I wrote down are specifically apartment tools. I think if you have a house, it's probably very different. I love that you wrote what you wrote in the show notes. A house may be a different list, but I wouldn't know that list because I'm a millennial.
SPEAKER_02Like, what is a house?
SPEAKER_00How do you want to quantify? I thought that was a mythical thing. Hammers are expensive. How the fuck am I supposed to buy a house? Um, okay. Um I just wrote down a list of tools that I think are like we'll go through the go-to tools and then the nice to have tools. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um I'll let you guys know which ones I have because I don't have an excessive like an excessive, I don't have a very good toolbox at my apartment right now.
SPEAKER_00I found out today that the first one I wrote down we don't actually own, which is a hammer hammer?
SPEAKER_01No. I have a cute little Domini hates the hammer that I have. I bought a cute little hammer.
SPEAKER_00Like I hate little cute little hammer. I think no, I think we do have one of those like little ones that's like, yeah, I love it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, oh no. If I could, if I uh had the spare time, I would like dress them up, I think. But it's just a like uh hmm, how tall is it? It's about as tall as it's about twenty centimeters 20 centimeters.
SPEAKER_00You have changed your hands so often. It's gone between like 10 centimeters to 50 to it's like like this.
SPEAKER_01It's um maybe like 20, 15, 20 centimeters long. You don't have a hammer.
SPEAKER_00We have a shitty hammer. No. Um yeah.
SPEAKER_01I think if you get a hammer, get one with the nail pulley thingies on the back, which is not a crowbar, apparently, but the things to pull the nails out.
SPEAKER_00Also, I would like to preface this by saying I had to look up what some of these tools are called. We also don't know what the nail pulley thing is called. You don't need to know the terminology. Like it was very cool and fine, but like you everybody knows what a hammer does. It hits shit.
SPEAKER_01It's a conspiracy that you need to know that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Okay. Um, the next thing I wrote down was screwdrivers. Yeah. A few different types of screwdrivers, some with like the stars, some flat bed or flat um Phillips head. Phillips head, totally. Throw the terminology out there. No, but actually, there are some that have like the magnetic holds that you can get the different bits and change them out. Those are quite cool.
SPEAKER_01Um and you don't need you don't need a drill gun. Like those are then the nice to have. But you uh like one by hand does help even for like IKEA furniture, especially the one where you can go.
SPEAKER_00You're talking about a wrench now?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's not the same thing.
SPEAKER_00No, screwdrivers are like the this what you put a screw in.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00A wrench?
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, no, no, no, no. I'm talking about the screwdriver, but it has the cool thing where you pull, you go one way and it doesn't turn, and then you pull to you and then you can see it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but you're maintaining the movement of a wrench.
SPEAKER_01A screwdriver is like But there's there are these ones too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but that's like a fancy screwdriver. Sorry. Okay. She has fancy tools.
SPEAKER_01I don't, I don't own that, but I really want to.
SPEAKER_00Another fancy screwdriver that I found out about today is if you are doing electrical work, yeah. There's one that has a little light that will light up when it gets to a current. So if you are doing electrical work and you're working on something, it'll light up and like warn you that there is an electrical current there. That's really cool. So you know to turn off the fuses. That's really cool. Um, which I think if you're trying changing a light fixture, which is not that difficult, yeah. You totally can. That tool's pretty cool, but that's like a fancy tool. Um, the other tools that I have are Allen keys, those like L-shaped ones. I have like a key set of different sizes. Same.
SPEAKER_01PSA, you don't need a toolbox. Just get a plastic box and put it in there.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Or a cardboard box.
SPEAKER_00We just have like a little random box. Yeah. Um, WD40 duct tape.
SPEAKER_01WD40 is so underrated. It's so underrated. Oh my god. If I didn't have that in my life, I would have not have I would not have a bicycle anymore because I wouldn't have been able to get it.
SPEAKER_00One of the recent episodes. This is what made me think of it. Yeah, WD40's the best. The saying is if it moves and it shouldn't, use duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should use WD40. If it creaks and it shouldn't, WD40. It's crazy. Like the doors that creak, you can just like a little bit of WD40.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. A little bit goes a long way, guys. Yeah. Just yeah.
SPEAKER_00Duct tape. Yeah. It's the best. Um, I also wrote down zip ties for like cords and stuff to zip tie them together. String also to tie stuff together. I also use string to like hang up the peppers we're growing to hang up the peppermint to dry them out. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01I feel like I've used sorry, I feel like I've used string to hang up pictures, but I can't remember how.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you use it to like it helps um level it. Yeah. Yeah. So if you put it on a string, you can level it more easily. Oh, okay. Visually. Yeah, maybe that's it. There's also one where like you hold a piece of string and then it like it helps visually like show if it's level or not. Okay. Um, but that's also a tool that I think everybody should have is a leveler. Yeah. You have it on your phone, but if your phone is tilted one way or another, it's not as accurate. And honestly, levelers are fun. And they're not bubble, I think. No.
SPEAKER_01You just need like a little one. Yeah, they are very fun. But oh my god, Domini and I were doing a home project at mom's house, the and we laid out these different, what do you call them in English? Blackley? Tiles. Tiles, thank you. My brain is breaking.
SPEAKER_02I don't know what she was.
SPEAKER_00She was she was drawing a square. She's like, what do you call it?
SPEAKER_02What does this call it a square?
SPEAKER_01We were laying down tiles, and Dumani would have me put the level on the tiles and then move the tile so that the level would broke my brain.
SPEAKER_00Thank you. Thank you, Dumeney. Dumini grew up in a household that did not build crooked shelves.
SPEAKER_01No, he yes, he did. But like if I see the bubble somewhere, my brain could not compute what way the tile needs to move now so that the bubble is more centered. I was so it's okay.
SPEAKER_00And it's a learning process. Yeah. It is a lot easier if it's at eye level.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because it was beneath me, it was a bit anyway.
SPEAKER_00It's beneath me. Um really. I think my favorite tool is a tape measure. Yeah. And I like the ones that like roll up. Yeah. It's like shoot. Yeah. Super fun. And super handy. The amount of times that I have done the women measurement of like this is about the length of my elbow to my elbow, and then bought something and I'm like, oh, it is way bigger than elbow to elbow.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, also, when you're going to look at an apartment, I know it might seem awkward, but just ask if they have floor plans. And if not, ask if you can measure it out real quick because it makes a difference how big the rooms are.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, will your stuff fit? Yeah. Um I also have super glue on here. That's an important one. And nails to hang stuff up if you have a hammer. And then I have some nice to have fools. Do you have any other like go-to tools? I mean a pencil. Yeah. Yeah. No, that's a great thing to have in your toolbox, actually. That's a great idea.
SPEAKER_01It's so underrated, but like also hanging up pictures and stuff. A pencil is so useful. So recommend. Yep. And maybe um like the masking tape also to hang up pictures. Then you can like or if you're painting, yeah. Yeah. Then you can um put the tape where you want the picture to be and you can kind of visualize it better. Yep. Very smart. That's would be mine. Yeah. Nice to have.
SPEAKER_00Nice to have a drill gun.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's very nice.
SPEAKER_00If you don't have a drill gun, make a friend that has a drill gun.
SPEAKER_01Honestly.
SPEAKER_00There are different types of drill guns and different types of bits and different types of like drills. There's an impact drill, and if you actually want to hang something, you need an impact drill if there's a concrete wall. Because I have been in situations where I've tried to drill into a wall and gotten very frustrated and thought I was too weak to drill a hole into this wall, but it was actually a wrong kind of drill, and you need a special type of drill to drill through concrete. Um, it's just FYI. Drill gun is nice.
SPEAKER_01Drill gun is a nice to have, though. Yeah. And a lot of people have one. Yeah. And honestly, like at the school I work out, work at, they also have drill guns. So sometimes I've just borrowed that one.
SPEAKER_00Also, if you have a dad, he probably has a drill gun.
SPEAKER_02And if you don't, I mean my boyfriend has a drill gun.
SPEAKER_00Like, what can I say?
SPEAKER_01If you don't, you made a friend.
SPEAKER_00Um then I okay, this is a stupid one, but just because Naomi, Ian, and I were talking about it, a staple gun is so fun. Is it? Oh my god. What do you use it for though? It's just like a giant stapler. So like No, I know what it is, but what would what would what scenario would you use it in? Um Naomi had these chairs that the cushion was kind of falling off, and she re-like attached it with the staple gun. Oh. So, like to just fix things or like fixate them again. Okay. It's also just a very fun tool to use. It sounds fun. It feels powerful. A crowbar.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so what is a crowbar then if it's not the thing that I thought it was?
SPEAKER_00It can also get out nails, but you can also use a crowbar because it's like a longer tool, and you can use it to take out walls and like I've taken it to like take off plywoods and stuff. It's not plywood, it's not just for nail remover.
SPEAKER_01It's also if I owned one, it would be the thing I would grab if I felt like I was being robbed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's a heavy duty tool.
SPEAKER_00That is a heavy duty tool.
SPEAKER_01It's what our mom grabbed famously. Love you, mom. Gotta put you on blast real quick. Um, famously, our mom grabbed this when there was a hurricane coming to town, and they had to go up. I wasn't born yet. They had to go up into the attic. I think you were. I don't remember those. No, this wasn't the one that I've experienced. Yeah, it was. How small was it? Schmall?
SPEAKER_00No, no, it was the one you experienced. It was Hurricane Rita. We put stuff up in the attic before we knew we were going to the church. Oh, I missed it. We boarded up the windows and then we put two cans of tuna, three bottles of water, some beans, and for eight people. A crowbar. Which looking back now, maybe should have brought a hammer as well.

SPEAKER_00But a crowbar is not the worst idea because you can get out nails. You can like, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, honestly, yeah. Go to if there was an apocalypse. I might grab a crowbar. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um pliers. Those are like it's kind of like the tongs. Yeah. To remove nails and stuff. I think pliers are super helpful. A wrench. How is that different from a what is that? The wrench is like the if you have like a bolt that you need to tighten, you use a wrench. Oh, then I was talking about a wrench.
SPEAKER_02You knew it. I knew you were talking about a wrench, and you're like, I'm talking about a screwdriver.
SPEAKER_01Why would you need a wrench and a screwdriver? Just use a wrench to put the screw in. You can have wrenches with like screwdriver bits on it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I like a screwdriver.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um whoops. Sandpaper. Yeah. I like sandpaper, especially if you're like refurbishing wood.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I feel like for old tables, like I have an old table in my kitchen, it would make sense to just sand it down, but I'm lazy and I don't want to. Oil it. That does a lot for you definitely need to sand this one. It has like old stains. Because it's a really old table. Yeah. But yeah, oil.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah. A dolly. I know. You haven't said anything about anything else. You were like, yes. The like thing that you put boxes on and it has two wheels that you can push around.
SPEAKER_02There's really big boobs and nice plots. Really amazing voice. Really talks about Julian a lot.
SPEAKER_01And apparently a really funny podcast, Naomi said. Yeah. Um, but not Dolly Parton. A dolly to put things in.
SPEAKER_00I mean, if you have a dolly parton in your partner, you might need not need tools.
SPEAKER_01Um you left out tire pump.
SPEAKER_00I did forget tire pump. I have this. I think this is me too. I have a small one. Oh yeah. Like a little hand pump. That's good. I have a I have a full-sized one. Um a ladder?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I thought I think of this as like a house tool. Because when you have a house, you have like gutters that you need to clean up. Yeah. But honestly, the amount of times I've needed a stepladder and just like climbed onto something.
SPEAKER_01A lot of stupid accidents happen doing this, guys.
SPEAKER_00I know it seems mundane, but just a little stool or something that doesn't spin.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Or where you don't have to balance something on something else so that you make the height. Like maybe not.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah. I think there are a lot of good toolboxes that have basically everything you need in them. Um, but I wanted to make this list because setting up an apartment is a little daunting, but you totally can do it. Yeah. Like you can fix certain things, you can hammer into the wall, use a screwdriver or a wrench, whichever is your preference. Um and honestly, like my top tools that I use are probably WD40, zip ties and duct tape, and Allen Keys.
SPEAKER_01I think um there are good toolboxes that you can get with tools. It makes sense to not get the cheapest thing. Yeah. Because it's so annoying if then you use it once and the tool breaks. And so if you see a toolbox and you're like, oh my god, this is so cheap, maybe, maybe it's a good toolbox, but just do maybe a little bit of research. Because if it's not, then you'll start the project and think this is so annoying. I hate doing DIY projects when actually this is so annoying with shitty tools.
SPEAKER_00Especially, I think, screws and bits. Yeah. Because if you have a bad screw or like it doesn't fit per properly. Nobody likes a bad screw. Nobody likes a bad screw. You need a good screw. Life lesson. Um, no, but you can like you can start to strip you can start to strip the screw head or the bit, and then it's impossible to get it in or out.
SPEAKER_02My god, this turns so sexual. I'm so glad we have a video on this one. And we just kept red, more red.
SPEAKER_00I get red so easily, and I notice when it happens when I'm talking to someone, and I'm like, stop. Uh I hate having the stripped screw head.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Okay. Moving on. Whoo. Take off my jacket. It's kind of warm in here.
SPEAKER_01Um, I also wrote down this is not what you what tools you should have, but I have found when building something, so Domaney's dad is very good at building things, and I've noticed something that he does, and is he takes a lot of time before he starts to build it to think about what the best way to build it would be. Sometimes there's sketching involved. A little bit. Sometimes it takes a few hours before he starts if it's a really complicated thing. And sometimes him and Domini will discuss what the best way is to do it. Now, I don't think you should procrastinate or anything, but maybe take a beat. Think about how you want to go about this before you jump in. That's a good idea. Look through the IKEA instructions before you start.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um also if you put together an IKEA furniture, I'm going to say nine times out of ten, you're gonna put on something backwards. Oh my god. It's part of the process. Oh yeah, this yeah. You're like, how is I oh it has four holes and not three holes like the other side. Okay. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00To Lydia's point of you don't need to buy or don't buy cheap tools. I think a really good website or there are really good websites. One of them in Switzerland is called Shirley, and people rent out their tools for a day. And then you can try it out and see if you like the brand. See if you like to do it. Yeah. SPEAKER_01Um, so I'm really good at building things. And Ian was Ian was renovating an apartment and he had to he had to hammer through a wall. So fun. Yeah, like Miley Cyrus and Wrecking Ball kind of thing. And I was helping him, and um, I like used the hammer and everything, and then I it was a sled hammer. It was a sledgehammer, which was a big ass hammer. Yeah, and I'm not a very big person. And so I use a sledgehammer and I swing, and the sledgehammer kind of slips, and I slip, and so I the weight of the sledgehammer caused my hand to knock against the wall full on, which hurt a lot. Um, and then I fainted.
SPEAKER_00And that's why we don't let Lydia use big tools anymore.
SPEAKER_01I fainted in the middle of the set, and yeah, it wasn't the best. So if you haven't fainted before while doing a job, you're already better off the job.
SPEAKER_02You're already a step ahead of me.
SPEAKER_01So uh no, what's the worst that can happen? Um I was fine. My finger was fine, by the way.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, you also just had like you had low iron, so you fainted easily.
SPEAKER_01I fainted easily. I mean it hurt like a bitch, but yeah, I also fainted easily.

SPEAKER_00So I moved into a new room and I like my boyfriend at the time helped me move my bed up, and I was of the understanding that he was going to help assemble my bed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But he just helped me pick up the bed and then was like, I have to go and left. And I was like, okay, I guess I'm assembling this bed by myself. It was like five o'clock in the evening. Um, I asked Ian for his drill gun. He wasn't around. I didn't have the right tools, so I just started like, however, I could, and then it started getting darker and darker and darker. And then I realized I didn't have a light bulb in my room yet, and I didn't have a bed. And I just started crying in the room. And at that point, Ian lived across the hall. And eventually he knocked on my door because he realized I had trying to be like contact him, and he was like, What happened? And I was like, I can't even put together a bed. And he looked at what I had and he was like, Yeah, obviously.
SPEAKER_01Um, putting a bed together alone, that's a hard one.
SPEAKER_00That is a hard one, yeah. And I like I can I can do it, I know I can do it, but I really like I didn't have an Allen key, I didn't have a drill gun, like I didn't have the right tools. Um, it went so quickly as soon as Ian helped. Uh, and I got the frame together. It was just about like the the inside of the bed. Oh damn. Yeah. Uh and a second funny story was if I can tell a second one, I was a camp counselor and we had like this toothbrushing station that was a little wonky. And so it was also moldy, like it needed to be replaced. But I just went and like kind of leveled it out. But I did a very Mackenzie job of it. And at one point, another counselor came out and it was really a language barrier thing. And he goes, I was like, Oh, look, I fixed it. And he goes, Oh, that's really good for a girl. And I looked at him and I was like, Excuse you. And he's like, Don't worry, I'll fix it. And I was like, No, I'll fix it. Back off. And he backed off. And then eventually he came and helped me and he was like, Did I offend you? I'm really sorry. Like it was, you did a really good job. I was really impressed. And I was like, You said it was good for a girl. And he's like, Okay, yeah, no, like you did a really good job. Like, I'm impressed that you can do this as a woman. And I was like, Why? And he was like, Well, oh. And he realized his mistake, and he was like, Okay, and I was like, either compliment me or don't.

SPEAKER_00Like, but I would like chop wood and stuff, and he was like, Wow, you're doing that as a girl. And I was like, Yes, I don't know how to turn into a man when I do this. Sorry, let me whip out my penis. Um he was a really cool guy, and we got along really well. It was just like some cultural differences. I think it was also a bit of a language barrier.
