STAYtalk Episode 28 11/17/2025: Celebrating SKZ & Confronting Westernization in K-Pop

Tonight’s episode was packed from top to bottom as we celebrated Stray Kids’ five big KGMA wins, including their well-earned Daesang. We broke down every highlight: the performances, the fits, and especially Bang Chan being the consummate gentleman, stepping in to help UNIS when they were being pushed to sit in front of AHOF. A small moment, but one that spoke volumes about character, respect, and leadership.

From there, we shifted into a deeper conversation about the growing trend of colonizing K-pop - how newer fans, especially those entering the fandom through K-Pop Demon Hunters, have been injecting Western expectations, norms, and mindsets into an industry built on Korean cultural context. We unpacked why this is harmful, how it erases the “why” behind traditions, and how projecting Western interpretations onto concepts like gender, sexuality, and identity flattens nuance and turns behavior into labels that simply don’t apply in the same cultural framework.

We lightened the mood (and feral levels) with a dive into Felix’s Vogue teasers and I.N’s Cosmopolitan teasers, because those releases demanded immediate discussion, gasping, fanning ourselves, and possibly reevaluating our life choices.

And as always, we wrapped with the Feral Agenda, because nothing, absolutely nothing, can stop STAYtalk from spiraling in style to end the night.

StreamYard recently rolled out this new thing where especially on YouTube, you can have it set up for both laptop and for mobile, which is why everybody last time had the problem where there were some of you that were on the mobile side, but not in the laptop side. So when I deleted one of them, you got pushed into the other one. Um I tried to set it up that way today and it messed it up. So we are just on the laptop side now.

So anyway, yeah. Uh anyway, um, yes, so the KGMAs and the divine teasers. So, okay, let's start with KGMA's, the straight, the straight kids. Let's start with KGMA's first. Yeah. Um, because I I watched all five hours of that. So I watched literally the whole red carpet. I watched the whole entire show. Of course, they put them at the end. Because, yes, let's get all the views. It's still an awards show, even though they're straight kids. It's still an awards show.

Um, so there was that aspect of things. I actually did enjoy it though, because I need to go check out P1 Harmony now because I really liked their performance, so I need to go check them out as well. Um, Kickflip is adorable. So there I I want to try I and I and I kind of saw their debut, but I've not been because they're kind of on the younger side. I've been I try really hard not to go to the younger groups only because I don't want to get all the Lulu over anybody underage, essentially. So I you know, even though it's like you look at them differently because they are, it's still that aspect of things. So yeah, same. You're trying not to be mad. It's like you couldn't do it, yeah. You had to do it twice. Um, so yeah, so yeah, yeah, so it's that so it's that aspect of things, but um the Christina Aguilera chick. Christina, the Christina um Dayon, Dayon, yeah. If I'm not if I'm pronouncing it correctly, because again, my code is not great. Um, but yeah, we were Tip and I are like, we were watching her performance and we're like, dude, this is like dirty era Christina Aguilera, like outfit and everything, just right up on stage. Um, so we were we were joking. Hair. So we were joking about that. Um, but I uh close enough. Thank you. I I'm I'll learn eventually. Um, but there was there was quite a few groups I want to go check out now because I haven't ever actually sat down and really paid attention. I mean, yeah, I I listen to ATs and I watch AT stuff and whatnot, but it was kind of nice to see some other groups um and to kind of get an idea of okay, okay, I might actually like this too. So that was an awesome experience for me at least. Um, but yeah, the the the all the flowers, all the freaking flowers earned completely and and and well-deserved flowers. Um so it it's I I don't know about UJC, but I know like when they were watching uh Kickflip do the cover of Maniac and whatnot, it was just like oh I watched a fan.

There was a fan cam that showed them watching the entire set that entire section from the beginning to end, and it was so cute to watch because you see all of them doing the big bang, you know, choreography because they did it before and singing, and then you see them doing the BTS thing, and then when they're came on immediately to their feet kind of thing. So that was that was really sweet. So there's that aspect, yeah.

You know what I mean? Instead of he turned his back so he couldn't see who just random and just swung it. I was like, Good boy, Felix. I'm like, that was smart, smart man.

I knew as soon as bang bang bang started that you were gonna have didn't see my jump, the one off the stage or the one back on the stage. Yes, that was like kangaroo jack, can kangaroo. Um, but the uh as soon as bang bang bang started, I'm like, they're not gonna sit still, like they can't sit still anyway to save it.

And that's me because it bothered me that everybody like the rope behind him, the girls were moving a little bit, and then like there was a girl group, there was a bunch of guys behind them, and then there was a girl group behind them, they were doing the bang bang bang choreography, which I was like, I'm thinking I could never sit still. Don't make me sit on stage and tell me you have to sit still and behave if there's good music on. Don't do that, yeah.

Um, I had a little this, I have this one tiny little piece of hair that is just sticking straight up and it's making me go berserk. There was somebody else that walked by. Uh Chen was sitting next to one of the guys. I think I don't know if he was sitting next to Steven or not from one of the other groups. But somebody like one of one of the one of the girl, one of the other girl groups walked by and they did something to like Chen just went like stick straight, hands on his hands on his thighs, looking straight forward, like, don't see me, don't see me. Like it was it was hilarious because it was like she was walking over to talk to one of the guys in the other group, but it was just like, I'm not here, I'm invisible, you can't see me, don't talk to me.

And I can't it was I and I don't know what those emoticons are because they don't show up on our sides. It's him high it's him hiding like Felix was when they talked about his voice. That was cute. That was very and then when they were talking, and all of a sudden that the camera fixed it on Felix, and Felix is like, Yeah, yeah, and Felix's little pout when no one was no one sat next to him.

He's like patting the chair. Well, it was them returning to their seats. So it was I would have sat my ass right next to um I just being hungry, so I decided who oh okay. Um, so so yes, there there was a bunch of unbelievably sweet, adorable moments throughout the whole entire thing, not mentioning the whole the the awards acceptance and like staying as low to the ground as human life.

Nobody was sitting next to him because you know there was two. That was the worst part. There was two chairs, it wasn't even just one. Um, no, when when they were all coming, and then you see so Chan, Han, and I don't know who else shrunk, and then the rest of the guys were kind of lollygagging, and Felix just wanted to get to to woonsack, you know, like he kept going, and Han kept getting in his way, and I almost said, Han, get out of the way, you know what I mean? And then to go for the hug, and he's on his tippy toes, he's on his tiptoes. In his defense, in in woo so uh by in woonsack's defense, he is super tall. So how tall is he? Oh, he's like if Rao Ramun's six three, he's six four. Oh damn. Yeah, he's tall, he's tall, tall. Um he's tall, tall. I I love him. So he's listening we're trying to hide our height because that guy's a giant. He is a giant, I know. Yeah, yeah, we get it. Okay, it was just I got all right. It was don't get mad. I gotta say this joke. So somebody was on threads. Okay. I have to find the exact thing because it was so freaking funny. I almost choked laughing. So I'll find it. But hold on, let me find out how tall Musak is first. Who'sak height? Hey, that's the third most Google thing, six three. So he's the same height as Raun. Okay, okay. But anyways, great. There was there was something else I also realized too, toward the end of the KGMAs. Um, and I don't remember. I'm pretty sure I messaged it to Valkyrie. I don't remember if I'm pretty and and Valkyrie, correct me if I'm wrong, but um, or I posted it on threads. I don't know. I everything's kind of a blur lately, so just excuse me for that. Um, but one of the things I definitely stated at the end of the KGMAs was that you know, for all the talk about how the industry is as it is, they are they stray kids are changing the industry. Oh, the industry changing because of what they are doing. Um, not just with all of the awards and the accolades and the flowers that they got that night, literally and figuratively, um, but just because of the fact that you can see you can see how, like you know, like case in point, you were talking about how everybody was just kind of being stoic on stage, but you still had the groups that were starting to loosen up and starting to kind of they should because like I'm thinking what they're the now, maybe this is wrong trying to at least, yeah.

Maybe this is uh a cur a K-pop thing or a Korean award show thing, but they don't always sit on the stage, it's just KGMAs they sit on the stage, the rest of them they sit in the audience, correct? Okay, because like that got like I in my pageant days, there was some pageants where you sat on stage, they would sit you on all the girls on stage, and you couldn't get away from it. They constantly watch you, and that's like when I'm saying you have to sit prim and you can't do this, and you can't scratch your face, and it's like you have like and I do not have a poker face, so that's hard anyway to not want to, you know what I mean? Yeah, to not want to, yeah, to not want to make it like make a face when you like somebody you don't like or somebody you know you it's yeah, yeah, and then the and the one fan cam of um I literally just got smacked.

Um, but you have this group of the and from what I from what I have seen, they're a group of underage girls. So they're under you know, they're under the age of like 18, right? All of them, and they're and they're wearing these cute little Lolita dresses, which were cute and adorable and gorgeous, and they're wanting these girls to sit on the ground. Yeah, I know. And they're telling A Ahof to go stand behind them, and um and Shan stopped them and said no, they're and moved them to why, like, like let's just do this. Um, so again, that's another one of those things where it's like how somebody acts when the camera's not on them, like because yeah, the camera's on, but the camera's on it wasn't focused, it wasn't focused at that point, um, is is imperative. Um yeah, exactly. I mean, it's because it's make the guys sit down. No offense, the guys are in pain. Then not to mention they're guys, uh no sit, um, and let the girls stand up because that way the dresses don't get messed up. There is no war, no issue with you know indecency or impropriety or anything like that, and they can just you know enjoy the thing. So yeah, massive kudos, not that we should have to give kudos, but massive kudos um to to to Chan for doing that, because it's it's important that like eh, again, changing the industry. Um, because there actually was a I think it was a TikTok edit um that juxtaposed that particular incident with one of the and I don't know if it was a I don't know if it was a um charity event or something uh something else where they had a bunch of idols and or actors. Well, you know, you can't make everybody happy all the time. Um, but there was a they juxtaposed that particular incident of of you know of Chris redirecting traffic essentially on stage with um a I'm pretty sure it was a charity event just by the way it looked. So you had the these girls, these women in their you know gorgeous dresses and whatnot, and they're kneeling on the floor while all of the guys in their suits are standing behind them. I remember that, yes, I know exactly what you're talking about. And it was like it was that aspect of like, okay, this this is what the standard is, this is what ends up happening standard wise, and so to see that be thrown out the windows, and you know, to have have Chris stand up for them and be like, no, this is what here. Um kudos, just kudos. We shouldn't have to give kudos, but kudos anyway. And and again, it's one of those examples of what people do when the camera's not on, right, is is important, and people do pay attention. So, um, so there is that aspect of things to it, which was pretty awesome. Um, and they didn't do many things on threads. I'm still scrolling, and then also the fan cam, and I think it was the last award of the night with the fan cam, and they somebody did a fan cam of them waiting to for the announcement of who won the award, and like Felix's little anticipation face, his yeah, I know big eyes, and just trying not to, you know, trying not to have a reaction while still having a reaction. So it that was that was that was cute. That was just cute, but thank god. Like I'm I'm so glad that they got the flowers that they got because that was well five awards, five awards, well erved, well erved and well deserved. So and then there had been rumors that it was gonna be halftime that was performed at the KGMA's, but it ended up being in my head, so yeah, it was even better, yeah. Like exactly, even better. I I um the honor, I believe it was so. Yeah, so it's it's that it was just a good award show overall, so and it it seemed to run fairly smoothly with the exception of that one little incident.

So I love that I recognized half the actors that were the MCs on stage. I also liked the fact that I'm halfway through watching it, I shut off the subtitle the subtitles, but I could like understand like like most of it, like I could follow to a point where I wasn't like duh, I don't know you know what they're talking about. I sort of follow it. I was like, oh, five years of listening to Korean may actually rub off on me. I will get there. Korean biosmosis, I will get there eventually. Hey, that's how people learn English over here.

No. So when I when I watched K pop Demon Hunters the first time, I I did see that. Right. I I looked, I loved Derby immediately. Obviously, I'm a cat person. So for me, like any kind of thing with cat or lion or tiger or you know, I'm in. But, anyways, I did my research because I kept looking because I knew his eyes were not just like that to be funny. I knew I had seen it, and of course, I've seen manwah. So, no, there it is nothing like it. It's people were because you got it. We'll get to that in a minute. We'll get that in a minute. We'll get to that in a minute. Because that's next to Manwa. I Googled what the Korean tiger meant to Korea back in the day. I looked up the lore, I looked up the pro the proverbs, I looked up the history of why and the mad pie. Because that's a thing too. That's sussy in the thing too. But in Google is free, ladies and gentlemen. You can Google anything. So before you open up your mouth and say something that's very westernized when it's trying to compare something that's actually using the correct history and whatnot, please shut up before you post it.

Um, so but the the the the video itself is absolutely freaking stunning. I cannot wait to see the whole flipping thing because uh just what we saw was like, oh my god, and I'm not even talking about the guys, I am literally talking about just the scenery and the concept and the the sets and just everything is just absolutely stunning, not to mention the song rocks. So um I I I for the the the 30 seconds of the song that we heard, it's I'm gonna be banging that in the car. That sounds bad. Um, I'm gonna be blaring that in the car, um, just with everything else, um, with the teaser, yeah. And like I I can watch that over and over again um to begin with. But to kind of do the segue into what that leads into is the other, I don't think I said this on the pod the other night, did I, JC? No, I don't think you did. So um I uh I yeah, I um the other night when we did the pod, uh shortly after we did the pod, I think this was on Saturday, I did a I do a daily for those of you that don't know, that don't follow me on threads, I do a daily post every day. And I call it my adumani advice. And it's basically me trying to create a little tiny space for people to just breathe for a second and kind of touch grass and come back to reality and just you know here what your auntie would do if you were acting up and being a fool, right? And that's what I try to I try to do with with as much tenderness and gentleness as I can and with the tough love that is necessary from time to time. Um, and Saturday I decided to do a post about um kind of along the lines of the whole uh the whole aspect of people comparing stuff to K-pop demon hunters because again, or anything for that matter, anything in a western realm. Yeah, so but again, we love K-pop demon hunters. The movie is awesome. I loved the music. I have watched it a couple of different times. Yeah, I I love and I love what it has done to a certain degree, but as I have said many times before on a many podcasts now, I know what happens when something goes mainstream over here because I've watched it happen to far too many subcultures. Um, and it it causes problems. Um, so exactly. So um my whole post on Saturday was literally asking everybody to stop colonizing K-pop and to stop putting a Western lens and a Western perspective on every single effing thing that any K-pop, J pop, C pop, TI pop, whatever puts out there because it is a different culture, it is a different country, it is a different societal expectation. Absolutely, and we cannot be putting our societal, cultural, what have you on that. It doesn't work. There are similarities, absolutely, there are similarities, but the similarities are where it ends, and people need to stop interjecting because what ends up happening is you essentially have an influx of new people who are trying to cram K-pop, not just stray kids, but everything K-pop, K drama, K Beauty, you name it, into a Western box. And what happens when you do that, essentially, is um you are trying to make it what you want it to be so that you are comfortable, not the other way around. When I saw K-pop demon k-pop demon hunters for the first time, I went and looked up Manois, I went and looked up what the tiger and the magpie went and meant and where they got it from and why that uh why that imagery was being used, because there was a reason why it was being used, right? Like there's a reason for it here, and when you realize what the reason is, it adds a layer of storytelling to the movie, right? You know, if you're a kid, you're not gonna get it, they're just kind of cute little funny, cute funny creatures. But if you're an adult and you want to do the things, you can kind of appreciate that. Strike is the same way, they put all of this cultural aspect into their into their work. There's a reason for that. There's Hollywood is there for a reason, it's to be able to spread Korean culture. So, why would you take something that is you willingly? I'm I'm going off on a tangent, JC. Stop me at any point in time, unless you just want to keep going. Why would you willingly interject yourself? You decided, I'm collective you, not necessarily everybody in this group, but collective you decided that you were gonna go and start fanning. What did I miss? I mean, yeah, it exists everywhere, blah, blah, blah, yada, yada, noise cancellation. But the yes, we want to see representation. Oh, D's in here. D joins a hi D. We want to see representation. Obviously, any marginalized group wants to see marginal wants to see representation. And I I'm not gonna say that I guarantee that if they could, if they are and they could, they would, because we have seen what has happened with previous performers, not just K-pop idols, but also actors and whatnot, who are um of the LGBTQIA variety, and what happens to them when they do come out.

Well, if they are, well, but but and if they are of of of that identity, they can and will get arrested for it. So why, why would you in any way, shape, or form want to jeopardize them in that way? Um and I my I had I had an ex bring me through that haunt, and I literally beat the living whatever out of him once we walked out the door because I was like buried in his jacket the whole entire time. So um I never watched Halloween Town. I actually have never seen Halloween Town. That's the one with Debbie Reynolds, I think. I don't remember, but the uh the I started working HalloweScreen, so now I'm seeing the behind the scenes stuff. Um, and once I saw how the behind the scenes stuff what worked, I was like, okay, wait. And now I'm the person that walks through a haunted house and laughs half the time whenever I get scared, because it's I it yeah, so um, so there's so there was that. Um, but and I've also like developed helped develop like smaller haunts and haunted trails and things like whatnot around here.
