The Art of Following
In Suite Vénitienne, artist Sophie Calle followed a man she barely knew through the streets of Venice, photographing and writing as she traced his movements. What begins as curiosity turns into a study of looking itself — where attention, desire, and intrusion blur. This episode of Photography and Walking explores Calle’s project alongside earlier experiments in surveillance and performance, from Paul Strand’s hidden lenses to Vito Acconci’s Following Piece. We also touch on a walk of my own, in Sunderland, that echoed her quiet pursuit. Together, these acts remind us that walking with a camera is never neutral: it’s a choreography of power, chance, and proximity — an art of following.

Ce qui commence comme une curiosité devient peu à peu une étude du regard lui-même — où l’attention, le désir et l’intrusion se confondent. Cet épisode de Photography and Walking explore ce projet aux côtés d’expériences antérieures de la surveillance et de la performance, de Paul Strand à Vito Acconci et son Following Piece. J’y évoque aussi une marche que j’ai moi-même entreprise, à Sunderland, en écho à la poursuite silencieuse de Calle. Ensemble, ces gestes rappellent que marcher avec un appareil photo n’est jamais neutre : c’est une chorégraphie du pouvoir, du hasard et de la proximité — un art de suivre.
