00:02:10.240 Um and so when we call them practices, they would be things that maybe don't come natural to us, but we would, as a community and as individuals, schedule these practices in our lives so that they would form us into uh the image of Jesus. 00:02:10.400 --> 00:02:22.159 And so if if I'm like your basketball coach and you are we are the team, I would say we need to practice shooting and passing and defense and dribbling and left-handed layups, unless you're right-handed, then right-handed layups. 00:02:22.319 --> 00:02:28.960 And I would expect as a team that we would go home and like you would be like Michael Jordan out in your backyard practicing foul shots or whatever. 00:02:29.039 --> 00:02:45.039 And so that's kind of the hope is that we lay this out as a grid and a framework, and all of us would be locked into as a community, but also individually, scheduling these practices in our lives so that we would be formed into the way of Jesus. 00:02:45.199 --> has become really a passion uh of mine and a and a central part of not only mine, but really my family's calling uh and ministry over the last several years. 00:07:59.279 --> 00:08:03.920 I'll get to some stories in a little bit, but uh let's talk about let's talk about the scripture. 00:08:04.079 --> 00:08:13.600 Um, our scripture reading this morning was from Luke's gospel, and it gave us a really beautiful glimpse or kind of a paradigm for the concept of Christian hospitality. 00:08:13.759 --> 00:08:16.959 So so Jesus is talking to this tax collector, right? 00:08:17.040 --> 00:08:22.160 Uh, this guy named Levi, and he calls him to follow him, and instantly he he does. 00:08:22.319 --> 00:08:28.000 Uh he leaves his tax booth, it says, and he jumps at the chance to become a follower of Jesus. 00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:31.360 And then I want you to note this what is the very first thing? 00:08:31.519 --> 00:08:38.399 Like what is his first action or his first response that followed this kind of this conversion calling moment? 00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:40.879 Bro throws a party. 00:08:41.039 --> 00:08:42.000 Right, a banquet, right? 00:08:42.159 --> 00:08:45.360 Verse 29 called it a great banquet. 00:08:45.440 --> 00:08:48.799 Um, and it's a party or a banquet that's full of whom? 00:08:49.279 --> 00:09:00.320 Well, it's his former co-workers, it's his social circle, his neighbors, it's people that that Levi wants to meet Jesus. 00:09:00.559 --> 00:09:05.440 And so he's saying, hey, come come on over, come to my home, come to my table, meet my Lord. 00:09:05.759 --> 00:09:08.480 You can follow him too. 00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:21.919 It's really fascinating to me, by the way, um, back at Red Sea Church in Portland right now, we are in a teaching series through uh the book of Acts, which if you're not familiar, it is literally it's the sequel to the book of Luke. 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:28.480 It's part two of the story of uh of Jesus' life lived out through his first followers. 00:09:28.559 --> 00:09:33.919 And just like two weeks ago, last time I preached, I preached on Acts chapter 16. 00:09:34.080 --> 00:09:40.639 And that's the story where the gospel makes its way into what is today the continent of Europe for the very first time. 00:09:40.799 --> 00:09:48.639 And in the city of Philippi, we learn the stories of two, these two people, Lydia uh and this Philippian jailer, right? 00:09:48.720 --> 00:09:50.960 Like a corrections officer in the city. 00:09:51.120 --> 00:09:57.120 And both of them come to, they they convert, they come to love and trust Jesus as Savior. 00:09:57.279 --> 00:10:11.440 Uh, and then with both of them, their very first action after coming to salvation was to gather a whole bunch of people at their tables in their homes, was to throw a party, to throw a banquet. 00:10:11.759 --> 00:10:18.240 And so it's just so interesting to me that Luke seems to be pointing out a pattern, right? 00:10:18.720 --> 00:10:25.200 That when Jesus opens someone's heart, they in turn open their home. 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:30.159 We see it again and again in the stories of Luke and Acts. 00:10:30.240 --> 00:10:38.080 And those homes, when we investigate a little bit further, um become filled with radically uh diverse groups of people. 00:10:38.480 --> 00:10:43.679 You can say it this way it's people from almost every color and collar and class. 00:10:43.919 --> 00:10:44.240 Okay. 00:10:44.480 --> 00:10:46.799 So in this story, we saw the tax collectors. 00:10:47.039 --> 00:10:53.440 The tax collectors were shady white-collar government contractors, right, taking money from people. 00:10:53.600 --> 00:11:01.600 Uh we see the the sinners as the Pharisees referred to them, which in Jesus' posse ranged of everything from like prostitutes to fishermen, right? 00:11:01.759 --> 00:11:03.600 Working class blue-collar folks. 00:11:03.759 --> 00:11:08.559 Uh, and then finally in this party, we have these self-righteously pious priests, right? 00:11:08.639 --> 00:11:11.279 The the Pharisees, the the clerical collars. 00:11:11.360 --> 00:11:14.799 We've got all the collars, blue-collar, white collar, clerical collar. 00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:19.840 And so you have to assume can you like put yourself there at that party for a moment? 00:11:20.240 --> 00:11:23.120 It's awkward for everybody, right? assume, at whatever party, that there were a lot of similar people from similar backgrounds sharing some sense of similarity, right? 00:12:51.440 --> 00:12:59.200 They're sharing in common affinity or uh a similar life stage, or we all have young kids, or whatever, whatever it was. 00:12:59.279 --> 00:13:05.120 But Christian hospitality, we could say, requires diversity. 00:13:05.440 --> 00:13:32.639 --> 00:13:35.360 Uh I met someone earlier from Pittsburgh. 00:13:35.440 --> 00:13:37.679 Uh so close by is Philadelphia, right? 00:13:37.919 --> 00:13:38.799 Philadelphia. 00:13:38.879 --> 00:13:40.480 You know, it's the city of what? 00:13:40.960 --> 00:13:41.840 Brotherly love. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:42.960 Somebody said birds. 00:13:43.120 --> 00:13:44.559 I don't want to talk about the eagles. 00:13:44.879 --> 00:13:47.840 Um yeah, brotherly love. 00:13:47.919 --> 00:13:51.279 Okay, the other word is the word xenos, which means stranger. 00:13:51.600 --> 00:13:55.360 Um, if you've ever heard you can think xenophobia, right? 00:13:55.519 --> 00:13:58.080 Is the fear of those who are different than us. 00:13:58.240 --> 00:14:03.919 So in Greek, they just smash those two words together, and what you get is in English hospitality. 00:14:04.080 --> 00:14:06.960 Uh, in Greek, philoxenia or phylosenos. 00:14:07.440 --> 00:14:09.919 Um, most literally translates. 00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:20.320 The best literal translation here is loving the stranger, or what I like to do is make a verb out of family and say familying the outsider. 00:14:20.960 --> 00:14:23.200 That's Christian hospitality. 00:14:23.519 --> 00:14:28.159 It goes far beyond uh just loving our church small groups. 00:14:28.720 --> 00:14:35.039 Uh Christian hospitality goes far beyond hosting your extended family for uh Thanksgiving dinner. 00:14:35.200 --> 00:14:42.639 Uh it really means showing real love to strangers and to outsiders and to unbelievers. 00:14:42.799 --> 00:14:52.080 I've heard it said this way before, that it's not actually Christian hospitality until there's someone there who you wish wasn't. 00:14:52.399 --> 00:14:53.440 Does that make sense? 00:14:53.600 --> 00:14:58.399 Uh and some of you are thinking that is exactly what holidays with my family are like. 00:14:58.720 --> 00:15:00.960 And uh, believe me, I get it. 00:15:01.120 --> 00:15:06.559 Uh our families are not always the most enjoyable, but they're still insiders. 00:15:06.799 --> 00:15:08.240 They're still insiders. 00:15:08.399 --> 00:15:24.000 And the reality here is that it doesn't take a bloody cross and an empty tomb for us to hang out with a whole bunch of people that look just like us, that think just like us, that believe just, that embrace the same values and and and lifestyles as us, right? 00:15:24.559 --> 00:15:43.679 And and I have this fear and this sneaking suspicion uh that my fear is that our churches today, churches across the nation especially, um, we we might get so good at the practice of community. 00:15:43.919 --> 00:15:49.120 And by community, I mean spending meaningful time and and meals and life with other Christians. 00:15:49.360 --> 00:15:55.039 My fear is we might get so good at community that we never actually break into hospitality. 00:15:55.440 --> 00:15:56.240 Does that make sense? 00:15:57.120 --> 00:16:07.600 Um So I want to challenge you diversity present in your home? 00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:33.840 Uh at the core of the gospel, we see that Jesus came to create one uh multicultural, multi-ethnic family uniting people of every color and when it became popular, nobody wore a what would Levi do bracelet, right? 00:17:05.680 --> 00:17:07.519 Um so let's talk about Jesus. 00:17:07.920 --> 00:17:11.119 Let's talk about Jesus' hospitality, an example. 00:17:12.160 --> 00:17:23.200 Um just out of curiosity, does anybody happen to know the what was the most common title that was used of Jesus in the New Testament hint? 00:17:23.519 --> 00:17:29.200 Commonly, uh incorrectly, people often think that this was Jesus' last name, which it wasn't. 00:17:29.440 --> 00:17:30.079 What was the title? 00:17:31.359 --> 00:17:32.880 Christ, yeah, yeah, Christ. 00:17:33.200 --> 00:17:33.839 The Christ. 00:17:34.240 --> 00:17:40.240 It shows up like I forget 530 something times in the New Testament, Jesus referred to as the Christ. 00:17:40.480 --> 00:17:46.240 Interestingly, Jesus almost never used that title of himself. 00:17:47.039 --> 00:17:53.519 Everyone else did, but he had a different title that he preferred, and that title was Son of Man. 00:17:53.839 --> 00:17:54.720 Son of Man. 00:17:55.119 --> 00:17:57.759 And if you're unfamiliar, it's a super cool title. 00:17:57.839 --> 00:18:00.160 It's got all sorts of roots in the mysterious and and tragic and very heroic figure that shows up like riding the clouds and slaying apocalyptic beasts at great personal sacrifice. 00:18:16.960 --> 00:18:20.720 He should he's almost like a Marvel hero, is really the vibe of the Son of Man. 00:18:20.880 --> 00:18:23.359 And Jesus was like, you can call me that, right? 00:18:23.680 --> 00:18:27.200 Like, I'll go by Iron Man, um, is
