Episode 10 – Colossians 1:9-11

In this episode of The Break Check Podcast, we continue into Colossians

For the first time, we’re walking verse-by-verse through a book of the Bible—starting with Colossians . Together, we read the passage and unpack Paul’s message to the church in Colossae: faith in Christ, love for the saints, and the hope laid up in heaven.

We talk about:

  • Who Paul is writing to—and why it matters
  • The power of a Gospel that is “bearing fruit and growing”
  • What authentic Christian faith actually looks like
  • How encouragement and gratitude shape a healthy church

This marks a shift for us as we begin reading Scripture in order and slowing down to really discuss it. No cherry-picking. No rushing. Just opening the Word and letting it speak.

If you’ve ever wanted to study the Bible more intentionally but didn’t know where to start, this is a great place to jump in.

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to the Break Check Podcast. I'm Lewis.

SPEAKER_01

And I'm Joe.

SPEAKER_00

And this is episode 10, I believe. Two full hands. Two full hands. I'm gonna run out of, I'm not gonna be able to count anymore. I'm done. I can't see much.

SPEAKER_01

Welcome to the last episode. The final episode. We filled up our hands. We're not going any further.

SPEAKER_00

I wouldn't say that. It's more like we just it's just episode. Stop counting. Just you know, episode.

SPEAKER_01

We got toes.

SPEAKER_00

We got toes. I can't see. They're my shoes.

SPEAKER_01

We can like, can you feel them?

SPEAKER_00

No. Ooh, you better get that checked out. Yeah, probably. Okay. Okay. So, Joe, it is as of today, the middle of March. So what are you doing spring break?

SPEAKER_01

Okay, spring break. Well, I'm gonna be working. Still gonna be working. I don't get to take it off, right? So that sucks. But but the one cool thing about spring break is we're we're hopefully we're gonna get this done. But my daughter is gonna be getting her driver's license. So she's gonna do like a like an intensive driving like class and then boom, take the driver test. Everybody watch out. She's gonna get her driver's license. Head on a swivel on the road, people. My cute little curly headed daughter is finally gonna get to leave without me in the passenger seat. Terrifying. Terrifying. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

She's just gonna be on the road now. She's going. Like you gotta it's over with. Check left, check right at the shop sign. Yeah. That's right. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

How about you? What are you doing over spring break?

SPEAKER_00

Well, I will be working as well. I'll have a conversation with my boss on that though. Maybe I'll get the week off. Um, yeah, I don't know. I let's see, wife's gonna be out of school, so we might have a little more time. How if we just rest? I don't know. It's so hard to find time to rest anymore.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my goodness. Yeah. And as you get older, you just start to realize how important that is. I used to never rest. Even in my in my thirties, I'm like, ah, who needs that? I'll just lay down when it's time to go to sleep. But sleep is for the dead. I long for rest now. I get you know.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I think it's just like we say we never did rest, but we just didn't realize how much rest we did do. Like now I've got a full-time job and I'm working all the time and like I understand like I didn't realize how much I sat and played video games before. And now I'm like, dude, I never play video games but just because I do stuff.

SPEAKER_01

Like I I think we should it's important to define rest. Yeah. It's important to define it. What is it and and what do you need from it?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And I'm like I'm looking ahead and I'm like, dude, when I have a kid, like I'm gonna get off work and come home and do more work because diapers need to be changed and mouths need to be feed fed and so I'm like, oh good, good night.

SPEAKER_01

Worst thing ever is getting up in the morning, leaving early, the kids are still in bed.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And then you have a long grueling day. And especially if it's like the w like the cold weather time, winter time, where it's like gets dark earlier, and like the kids are going to bed at like 7 p.m. So you get home at 6 15, 6 30, and then you get 30 minutes to hang out. Yeah, and really that's whatnot. You know, if you do it right, that's like the time that you unwind and you start getting them chilled out, right? And then all of a sudden you get home and they're excited because dad's home. You know, that's that's rough.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. All right. So we started last week with this new series. We're going through Colossians. We read the first eight verses. Um, I don't know if we're gonna read a chunk that big again till the end of the book. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Well, Colossians gets good. I mean, not it's good.

SPEAKER_00

I don't want to say that.

SPEAKER_01

Well, book's good, but but it gets more rich. Yeah. Right? As we as we go forward.

SPEAKER_00

So um, so today we're reading verses nine through eleven um in chapter one. Um, do you wanna do you wanna read the the scripture?

SPEAKER_01

Nine through eleven. I got it, I'm ready. And so from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy. Wonderful. That's Colossians 9 through 11.

SPEAKER_00

Colossians 1, 9 through 11. Yeah. Um, before we get into uh breakdown, I'm gonna pray real quick, okay?

SPEAKER_01

Pray for us.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Lord, thank you for today. Uh thank you for this time to come together and just study your word and to look into the intricacies of your apostle Paul. Um, I pray that you fill this place with your spirit and just guide us through um not only what we need to say, but what you want to say through us. Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

SPEAKER_01

Amen.

SPEAKER_00

Alrighty. Um as I was reading through this scripture, I thought of another scripture actually. I thought of Philippians four, six and seven. And I love Philippians four, six, and seven. I'd say it's probably top three verses in the Bible for me, or scriptures for me. Um, and Philippians four, six says, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God. Word. And that is exactly what Paul is doing here, right? So he says, We've not ceased to pray for you. So he's indicating that he's praying, right? Um, that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will and spiritual in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. So he's supplicating, right? Do you know what supplication means? No, define it for me. Supplication means to ask or beg for something earnestly and honestly, right? So this is Paul asking for something from God over the church of Colossae.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

Right. And I think when we break down, kind of we last week we talked about how he never went to the church of Colossae. It was founded by uh a disciple of his without really a lot of his influence. And so he's never been to this place, and he's kind of sending this letter as a as a beacon of light, a guiding light in the distance. And so, you know, we're we're building this foundation of what Paul is asking God to bestow on these people and then what they are to do with it in the later verses.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. Yeah, and I think, you know, when Paul talks about we have not ceased to pray for you, you know, we've had an episode earlier in our in our recordings talking about you know prayer, right? And to pray without ceasing, right? And I think we we kind of drilled that down and and and gathered an understanding of what that means. And and Paul talks about that here, and and you know, his his the posture of his heart is always um with delight for the Colossians, right? Um and so I really like here in in verse nine, he talks about, if I if I may, can I can I can I talk about it? Okay, in verse nine, he talks about um uses the word spiritual, right? And in not as a synonym of religious or of religious, but as a reference to the activity of the spirit of God, right? So when we say I'm not religious, I'm spiritual, right? Come on, that guy, yeah, get me going on that, right? But you know, that's not what he's saying here. He's saying spiritual, meaning the movement of the spirit of God, and what the Colossians needed above all is God's own spirit at work to turn their knowledge of the scripture into true wisdom, right? Because we talked about knowledge, you can know all sorts of things, but wisdom is the applied knowledge. Like, how do you use this knowledge you have, right? You know, I know how to, I know how to drive a car. We talked about my daughter getting her license, right? I know how to drive a car, but if I don't know where I'm going, if I don't know how to get to the hospital, I'm probably not gonna make it. You know what I'm saying? So I really liked how he uses the the you know, first of all, his delight in saying we don't, we've not ceased, you've been on our on our hearts, you know, posture of our heart is that you grow in knowledge and then spiritual wisdom.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. It was yeah good. Kind of ties into what I was going at for like the the movement of God, right, and what he's asking for in these people. Absolutely. Um and I think as we kind of move into verse 10, it says, so as to walk um in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. Um, and so we're kind of transitioning from what Paul is asking of God over the church of Colossae into what Paul is asking for from the church, what they what he's expecting um them to do with this newfound knowledge that he's asking God to bestow upon, or not knowledge, wisdom, right? Because um, when I was reading through this, it really stuck out to me that he he says knowledge in both verse and nine and ten, right? It says with the knowledge of his will in verse nine, and it says increasing in the knowledge of God in verse 10. And I'm like, well, like what it's redundant. Why why does he say knowledge twice, right? Because we we know Paul, we know that every word that he writes is thought out, correct. And so why are we repeating ourselves here in essence? And I don't think he is, right? In verse nine, he's asking that the that God fills these people with knowledge and wisdom. In verse 10, he's asking these people to use that knowledge to build their understanding of God, right? He's asking God in verse nine, he's saying, um, to be filled with knowledge of his will, right? Right. To know what they what God wants these people to do, right? And then in verse 10, he's saying increasing in the knowledge of God. So not knowing what God wants you to do, but knowing who God is and what what all of what he wants you to do has to do with playing into your life and the lives of others, right? Absolutely. And so I really enjoyed how he transitions into kind of asking for these what these people want and how verses nine and ten build a foundation of like this is what I want for God from you for you people, and this is what I want you guys to do. Um, and I'm just gonna read verse 11 because that's where we're gonna finish off today, saying, being um strengthened with all power according to his glorious might for all endurance and patience with joy. And we mention what two, three fruits of the spirit, right? That's what I was getting ready to say. How many fruits of the spirit are in that statement, right? So he's he's talking, you know, uh bearing fruit in every good work. How do we bear fruit? Verse 11. That's right. And so these this expectation of these people um built up on knowledge through power, um, in accordance with might, endurance, patience, and joy. Joyously doing it, right?

SPEAKER_01

I want, if I could, going back to verse 10, um, I wanna I want to go back and reread it, but I wanna I want to emphasize on something slightly different than what you just did. And that's the again, that's the beauty of Paul's letters, is like I think you said this last week where um or a couple weeks ago, where you and I could go home to our wives and recount this conversation differently, right? So as we read this and we navigate this, certain things jump out at us at different times. So if we if we reread verse 10, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God, right? And when I read that word increasing, I see it as if we replaced increasing with pursuing the knowledge of God, right? He talks earlier, like you said in verse nine, that um asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. So growing in the scriptures, growing in spiritual wisdom and going spiritual knowledge and then wisdom, but even though you've grown in it and you have it, don't ever stop pursuing it. Don't ever stop increasing in the knowledge of God, right? And so the knowledge, yes, correct, you're absolutely right, with how you placed it. But I think that word increasing, we shouldn't skim over that because I think he one more time, Dr. Mindful Paul, right, uh he uses that word increasing in growing, right? And so that's kind of what we're doing, right? As we navigate, read our Bible, you know, uh you know, we've talked about it, we've read the New Testament a couple times, but every time you read it, you increase in knowledge and and and wisdom for sure, right? And a couple other points in verse 10, he uses the word so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord. And I really love that because that's an emphasis for Paul, right? So as he references walk in a manner that is worthy of the Lord, you know, we could take that back to the metaphor of walking um as a way of life, right? So as we navigate, we we progress, we move, um, or or to live in a manner that reflects the Lord, right? And so if we reference, for example, I'm gonna go Psalms 1-1, blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor um, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, right? So a man who walks, right? Blessed is the man who walks not. So the man that lives not in their way, but in the way of God, right? So blessed is the man who walks in the way of God. Um I'm so glad you coughed on camera now. So now it's I'm not the only man. I'm over here fighting for my life. Dude, I'm struggling too. Fresh off the flu, you know, trying to trying to live. Yeah. But it's it's um, I really love that because he's he he references action over words, right? Um, or or knowledge in this verse. So bearing fruit in every good work and then increasing in the knowledge of God. That's action steps, right? So he's telling them, This is what I hope and wish for you, and these are action steps on how you can obtain this. Yeah, right. So he he draws attention to the importance of behavior and belief in the Christian life over just performance.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Yeah, I I think it's it kind of all ties together because you're talking about action. And when you you were speaking to, you know, we need to be increasing in our knowledge of God. All of these things kind of play together in this concept that Paul is building up of the knowledge of God and how it's bestowed upon you and how you can understand it. Because um, you know, knowledge of his will, nobody knows what God wants, really, right? Right. We're just all here making our best guess, trying to do what we think is pleasing to him, but nobody actually has the concrete, this is what you are to do in this exact moment, every second of their lives, right? Right. Um, and so I think it's important to kind of make light of that of like when you try to bear fruit and be patient with others and be joyful of others, and when you study your Bible, it's all in this um attempt to increase your knowledge of God and increase your knowledge of what he wants you to do. Right. Um, less so of, hey, I'm gonna be joyful because that's what the Bible says, or hey, I'm gonna read my Bible because that's what my pastor said to do on Sunday. No, I'm gonna be joyful in an attempt to understand what it means to live a Christ-like life and how that affects those around me. And I'm gonna read my Bible not because that's what pastor said to do, but because I want to understand the character of this man that I've dedicated my life to.

SPEAKER_01

That's right. That's right. Well, and we we know and believe that when you give your life to Jesus, everything changes. Everything. And so you go into this with this uh joyful pursuit to increase in understanding, knowledge, and then wisdom, the application of it, right? You you seek that and you've and it's just so good, right? When you're when you're it's almost like we get to a point where it's harder to live the other way.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Right? Um, and I think if you've truly given your heart and you're in that, then these other things become things you're eager to do, right? You're interested and eager to do that for sure. You want to unpack verse 11 for us?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I was gonna say, um, I mean, I don't really have anything to add with verse 11. I think verse 11 um is really just an extension of verse 10, kind of going a little bit deeper into what he's asking for for the Church of Colossians, for the Church of Colosse to do, right? Um it's it's kind of mashing the first two concepts together, right? Right. Verse 10 is it, or verse nine is asking, hey, God, will you fill these people with your knowledge and your wisdom so that they can do your will? Right. And verse 10 is it, hey, you people need to listen to that guy and you need to execute and learn what God's will is. And verse 11 is, hey, God is with you as you go and do this. That's right. Right. He's gonna give you the strength and the endurance and the patience to do this stuff with a good attitude.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_01

That's kind of like what I I think that's I think that's kind of like what I just said, you're right. You you go into it um, because right when Jesus, when you give your life to Jesus, he changes everything, right? And so you're going to endure joyous, right? You endure the toil of, I mean, because listen, we pray for power strength from God, but that doesn't mean, you know, we are overwhelmingly victorious in our life as a Christian. As a matter of fact, it means the opposite. It means that we are convicted from our sin. We are repentance and we have, we feel it. We know, you know, and and we we guard and defend ourselves. And so praying for the strength and power is not like this physical, like Paul's not praying that the Church of Colise is all of a sudden gonna be powerful and they're gonna be an army, right? He's praying for their hearts and their their minds and their their their persistence to endure in a joyous way, yeah. So, yeah, I think we're saying the same thing, man.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I was gonna say, uh that's been Colossians 1, 9 through 11. Um, if you guys have any questions or anything, leave it down in the comments. And please, please let us know kind of how you're uh liking these new episode formats.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. I'd really like to know it. I I I re-listened to the last episode again this morning, and I gotta say, personally, I like a shorter episode. I like getting it in my drive in the morning and and absorbing it and getting getting time to think through it, right? Instead of listening to an hour-long episode, right, in my 40-minute drive. Lewis apologizes. I get it, man. I understand. I fought hard. Man, you yeah, you're you okay? No, no, no. Listen, uh okay, I'll pray us out of here. But first, just reminding everybody like us, follow us, all the socials, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, uh, obviously YouTube, right? Um, and then we have a website, breakcheck.net. If you like what you hear, want to send us some feedback, or you don't like what you hear, we want your feedback, right? And then if we can pray for you, let us know. But I'm gonna pray us out of here. Lewis is gonna step away from the mic if he needs to cough. Father, we love you. Thank you for this day, God. And I want to first pray for Lewis's cough and ask that you give him uh divine knowledge towards some day quil. And Father, I pray over our listeners, I pray over our families, I pray over your word with gratitude. Father, I'm so thankful for an opportunity to gather together uh over your word and speak it into the internet, Lord. We just ask that you bless us as we uh go forward, Lord. And you're we pray this in your son's holy name. Amen. That was episode 10. Colossians 9, Colossians 1, 9 through 11. Excuse me, I said it wrong the first time. So that's it. Peace. Goodbye.
