Episode 11 – Colossians 1:12-14
In this episode of The Break Check Podcast, we continue into Colossians
For the first time, we’re walking verse-by-verse through a book of the Bible—starting with Colossians . Together, we read the passage and unpack Paul’s message to the church in Colossae: faith in Christ, love for the saints, and the hope laid up in heaven.
We talk about:
- Who Paul is writing to—and why it matters
- The power of a Gospel that is “bearing fruit and growing”
- What authentic Christian faith actually looks like
- How encouragement and gratitude shape a healthy church
This marks a shift for us as we begin reading Scripture in order and slowing down to really discuss it. No cherry-picking. No rushing. Just opening the Word and letting it speak.
If you’ve ever wanted to study the Bible more intentionally but didn’t know where to start, this is a great place to jump in.

Welcome to the Break Check Podcast. I'm Lewis. And I'm Joe. And this is episode eleven. Eleven. Two point one hands. Two point no. Two point zero five hands. No. Two point two hands. Nah, I don't know. Math. You can't, but that math is wrong. I know that that math is wrong. I don't know what the right math is. That math is wrong. Two and a tenth? Why would it not be two and a tenth? Because one tenth of a hand is half a finger.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03Well, okay. Welcome everybody.
SPEAKER_00So Lewis, what's going on in your world? Um, that's a that's a that's a deep question. I think I'm gonna go I think we're gonna go down the sports rabbit hole just for a second. I think we'll mention that Jalen Waddell just got traded to the Broncos, which gives me hope for the future that our offense will be more two-dimensional next season. So welcome, Jalen. I'm sure you're definitely listening. Um, Broncos Country, let's ride.
SPEAKER_03Is that it? Yep. Jalen Waddles got traded to the Broncos. Congratulations, Broncos fans. Right. And Jalen Waddle. And Jalen win a Super Bowl. Because obviously.
SPEAKER_00Oh, because he's going from poverty down to Miami to winning a Super Bowl with the Broncos next season. Oh, okay. Have the Dolphins ever been good? The Dolphins are the only team in history to go undefeated and win a Super Bowl. Really? Yep.
SPEAKER_03I didn't know that. I did not know that. Well, cool, man. I like that. Congratulations, uh, you and all your um Broncomaniacs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Mile High Maniacs. Is that what is that is that No, I just made that up, but it's better than Broncomaniacs.
SPEAKER_03Hmm. I went to a RC race one time at a mile high raceway deal. In Colorado? Colorado. Golden Colorado.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's mile high. Yeah. Because like elevation at Denver is literally a mile high.
SPEAKER_03Interesting. Yeah.
SPEAKER_005280. The private.
SPEAKER_03That is the name of the track, 5280 Raceway.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Yeah. Because it was a mile high. 280 feet is a mile.
SPEAKER_03I see. Okay. You learn something new every day. Yep.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Well, because you're going to ask me what's going on in my world. Um, I signed up for this really cool deal at my church called the Foundry. And I'm officially signed up for it. It is a two-year biblical training course. Yeah. So I think I have two semesters or two years basically. It's not really semesters, but man, I am really excited about that. I think it's gonna really give me some extra biblical brain wrinkles.
SPEAKER_00Biblical brain wrinkles.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. The very first like little section of it, I guess would be semester of it, is harmeneutics, harmonetics, but essentially it's the study of how to study the Bible. The study of how to study the Bible. Yeah, because there is a proper way, apparently. Yeah. So I'm going into it just real humble and just want to learn and absorb and get deep into God's word. I think there's no better way. I think so too. So okay, so we're Colossians 1, 12 through 14, episode 11. You want to kick us off?
SPEAKER_00It's kind of like a part two to episode 10. I don't want to read the scripture. You know why? Because I have this horrible thing going on where verse 12 starts on this page and it the rest of the passage is on this page.
SPEAKER_03So the curse of the single column Bible. It's a double column. Oh, okay. Well, I'll read it. I'm happy to do that. We are 12 so Colossians 1, 12 through 14. Giving thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. For sure.
SPEAKER_00You want to pray a sinner, you want me to pray sin? I'll pray a sin.
SPEAKER_03Father, thank you for this opportunity to get together over your word, God, and lead us, lead our conversation to grow your kingdom, God. I pray for the listener and for them to absorb what you have for us here, Lord. We just pray that you lead our lips. In your name we pray. Amen. Amen.
SPEAKER_00All right. Verse 12 through 14 of Colossians 1. Um I want to kind of connect this back because I said it was like a part two of what we talked about last um episode. And last episode I talked about Philippians 4, 6, where it says, do not be anxious, but through prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving, and how we read like the prayer and supplication part of that. Right. Um, and now we're reading Thanksgiving, obviously, because uh, you know, it starts off with, you know, give thanks. Um, and so I kind of wanted to just acknowledge, I didn't think I did do a very good job last week of driving home the fact that I think this is Paul resting some of the anxieties around, you know, not being in the church of Colossae before and you know, trying to lead this via like through letter, right? And through his disciples. And so he's kind of turning some of that anxiety into this prayer and thanksgiving and resting over his anxieties. Yes.
SPEAKER_03Okay, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah, I can I can get behind that. So, um, and then, you know, if you want to start talking about verse 12, what's going on?
SPEAKER_03Of course, yeah. I I love the fact that, you know, thankfulness is a recurring theme in the book of Colossians. Um it's, you know, and I think Paul, you know, of course, we we mindful Paul, right? Um, he makes it crystal clear that thankfulness, also, I mean, we could change that word and go with gratitude, right? I like gratitude. I was telling my wife the other day, I like the word gratitude better than thankfulness, but but but all meaning the same thing, that should be a distinguishing mark in all Christians. I think that as, and and when we when we look at it, it's a foundational principle in scripture. Like, for example, Psalms um 107, verse 1 and 2, oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble. And isn't it interesting how you know when we read this, it's saying that, right? He has redeemed um who whom whom he has redeemed from trouble, right? Um, delivered us from the domain of darkness. Yeah, right. I think very that those align very well. So Paul's bringing some Old Testament in referencing giving thanks, but but all that to say the more a a Christian can allow the scripture to shape their attitude, um and prayer time, the more the thanksgiving and gratitude becomes just a natural resting place.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I like that. It's like taking the uh the scriptures are a reminder of what we've been delivered from. And so if if thankfulness is spawned from that, then you know, constantly being reminded of what has happened is gonna produce more thankfulness. Um and I think I think Paul in this three pat three-verse passage is giving thanks for three things. I think he's giving thanks for hope and promises, he's giving thanks for what Jesus did by dying on the cross, and giving thanks for the person that is Jesus and uh what actually happened in our lives when we accept him. Um and so, you know, in verse 12, it's talking about the first one that I mentioned, giving thanks for the promise, the inheritance that um, you know, is promised. I think a big word that I wanted to bring up was hope. Um, my pastor talked about how hope in the Bible means something different than hope today. And like when I say I hope I win the lottery, that's me hoping for something that hasn't happened yet. Right. That probably won't happen, right? But I'm still hoping for it. Right. Um, but hope in the Bible is a promise, right? For this reason, to this end, we have hope, right? Um, we hope that we're gonna go to heaven, but at the end of the day, we read this book and we know that's a promise as long as you uh confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus is Lord. And so hope, when it's mentioned in the Bible, is a little bit more concrete, more more rock solid. And I think that's kind of what Paul is thanking, thanking God for in verse 12, is the hope of the inheritance that we're gonna gain one day um in heaven.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. That's like having hope for what's been done, right? What's been like the inheritance of going to heaven, right? Because that's to me legitimately what he's talking about here. He's he is stating that um he he's qualified you, right, to share in the inheritance. And so I really, I really love I appreciate you bringing that up because I think hope is is a big piece of of this passage too. So I agree with that.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah. Uh, and you were talking about prayer, and I think, you know, thanksgiving is so important in prayer, right? Oh yeah. Because you're that's our ability to communicate to God. And like it's great to be thankful for everything, you know, all the time, but you gotta be thankful to the person, right? It there's a reason your mom drove home when somebody gave you candy at the store, you gotta say thank you, right? And so you gotta make sure to pray thankfulness to God.
SPEAKER_03Um Yeah, and and so I I think that well, I I don't think. I don't think this, I know this, that you know, we give God the glory, right? And we we give him thanks and and and we we pray with gratitude, that's our that's the sign that we're seeing God operating and actively participating in our lives, leading our lives, right? So we have gratitude, and even if it's for just the smallest stuff, the gratitude of, you know, thanks for letting me get to work safely today, God. Yeah, thankful for you. Um, and so I I I tr I try really hard. Sometimes my prayer time is more like woe is me. I'm guilty of that, but I think that I really try to build it around an attitude of thankfulness, of gratitude. And I I and that gets I think stronger as time goes as a Christian, and again, that union with Jesus, there's nothing but gratitude. For sure. Because we don't deserve that, you know. So I think that's I think it's really important, you like you said, you know, bringing up the prayer time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, and you know, bringing up Jesus, I think, uh kind of transitions into what Paul is thanking for next is uh deliverance, right? Deliverance from sin. And Paul is very cryptic in verses 13 when he says, like, delivered from the domain of darkness, right? It sounds very spooky, scary. Um, and so I think he's drawing conclusions to more than just like sin or whatever's wrong with your life, but he's he's talking about how, you know, when when the fall happened back at Genesis, the world was enveloped in sin and there was evil um entering into the world. And when Jesus died on the cross, he he offered freedom from that. Um and he he transferred us from you know this darkness and built us this place, the kingdom of heaven, right? Jesus talks about the kingdom of heaven as like all the time throughout the gospels. And so it's this uh this thankful attitude towards you know no longer having to bear with the weight of the darkness in this world, but having you know Christ to set us free.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely. And you know, when I read that, you know, like you said, that the the the um domain of darkness, you know, I think it's important that we that we that we point out that Paul isn't saying that the church of Colossae was possessed, right? They aren't demonic, right? But we know that darkness is is a reference to without light, right? And we know God is light, right? And so when we say, when I think when he's telling the church that the domain of darkness, meaning their homes being without God, right? So they are without God when they're in the darkness, right? When we are not in the light, we're not being the light, right? God within us, um, then we're in darkness. And I think he's pointing that out, um, the deliverance of that, meaning that is that is God in action, right? Delivering us, picking us up, and bringing us out of that, right? So I I I really appreciate his word choice here. Um and kind of a a kind of a fun fact that when we talk about, and I'm jumping a little bit forward here, maybe shouldn't do this, but I'm gonna do it anyway, because you know, but when we talk about the word kingdom, you know, you see that word kingdom, and you know, in the letters, Paul using the word kingdom is pretty rare. Doesn't happen a lot, he doesn't use that word. However, if you go back and you read the gospels and the teachings of Jesus, he overemphasizes the kingdom, right? He's the king of the world, right? And so um Jesus, and this is this is a really cool moment where Paul ties together the teachings of Jesus in his letter to the Colossians when he's saying, you know, we're delivered into the kingdom, right, by way of Jesus. So I thought that was pretty cool. I kind of picked up on that as I was studying earlier. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um let's see here. And so I I really like you know how verse 13 and 14 kind of work together. Um, it's hard to I thought it was kind of hard to pick up on exactly what Paul was getting at um in verse 14. It's very short, cut off in the middle of a sentence. Um and I really liked kind of picking up on how like we always talk about how the ESV is more word for word, right? Um and when people read the ESV, like my wife had a big issue with like it reads backwards. It's kind of like Yoda speak. It's like yeah, yeah, um, in this place the people were, right? Um and I kind of applied that to this entire passage. If you look at it backwards, it's kind of kind of references almost the gospel. I know, I know you would kind of note take that down as well. Um, but it's like if you read verse 14 and then 13 and then 12, it's like Jesus redeemed us, forgiving us from our sins, transferring us from the domain of darkness into the kingdom of heaven to sharing his inheritance for all people. Love it.
SPEAKER_03No, absolutely, for sure. Yeah, and I I couldn't I couldn't separate 13 and 14. So in my notes, I put verse 13 and 14. Because it's just to me a truly it's it's it is the gospel in a very short and simplified way. And Paul, he is constantly and continuously talking about the gospel. He brings the reign when it comes to the gospel. There is there is nobody that's evangelizing like Paul, right? And so, well, maybe, but I mean, you know what I'm saying. I'm getting at it, I don't want to, I don't want to offend anybody, right? But I'm just I'm just saying he shortens and simplifies the gospel in those two verses almost perfectly. Um and you know, especially when he he capitalizes. So in verse 14, he capitalizes and then clarifies it, right? He says the same thing twice. It's a single action when he says, In whom we have redemption, comma, the forgiveness of sins. Really, what it should have been is slash the forgiveness of sins, because redemption is that. The redemption is the forgiveness of our sins. And kind of going back to that Psalms 107, verse 1 and 2, um, let the redeemed of the Lord say whom he has redeemed from trouble. Um so I think he's he gave us the acts of Jesus by, you know, so the act of God by way of Jesus and then reiterated it by saying, you know, we are um we are we we have redemption, and then what is redemption? Redemption is the forgiveness of your sins. Um so acknowledging the Colossians that they were delivered from the domain of darkness, they were delivered from their sin and then given redemption, forgiveness from it. Right? We're gonna grab you and pull you out of here, and then we're gonna forgive you for it. Now just follow me. So pretty cool little snapshot of Paul. And and and again, this c this continues throughout the book of Colossians. He just continues to just continues to kind of bring it, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think this prayer, I think the reason I think it was good we broke down into episodes because this prayer sets the stage for the rest of the book. I agree. Right. I think Paul in the these what six verses, six verse prayer is setting setting the stage for you know what he wants to talk about. Like this is what this is, right? This is this is Christianity is in it in its entirety, and this is what I pray for you people. And then we're gonna go and break down why it, you know, the next the next header is a preeminence of Christ. So we're gonna go break down why Christ is important, and then we're gonna go into what we're supposed to do as a church. And as you know, you progress through the rest of Colossians, it's just a handbook.
SPEAKER_03It truly is, yeah. It just gets better from here. It just gets better from here. Well, man, I don't have anything else.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think I got through most of my stuff too.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely. Well, so that was episode 11. Yeah, that was uh a quick little snapshot of of Paul and thankfulness and gratitude and quick little gospel, smack you in the mouth with uh being delivered from the domain of darkness. Um so just want to remind everyone, follow us on the the socials. Everywhere you get your socials, you can find us there um Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, um, Spotify, all that stuff. Um you want to pray us out of this house?
SPEAKER_00Lord, uh, thank you for this day and this opportunity to uh explore your word and to kind of look at what your servant Paul had to say uh to the Church of Colossians, Lord. I just pray that if this any this uh gospel message resonated with anybody and they're not giving their life to you, that they would take the steps necessary to go ahead and do that and to and get plugged into a church and understand what your character and your your lifestyle looks like here on earth. Um, thank you for each and every blessing you pour out on every single one of us each and every day, um, for the opportunity to film this podcast and for the opportunity to grow closer to you, Lord. Jesus' name I pray. Amen. Amen. All right, episode eleven. Thanks everybody.
