We’ve engineered one of the most over-engineered disposable objects on the planet, and then asked people to solve it at the bin.
This episode follows that tension underwater, to the mussel, a creature that holds on in chaos through a repeatable cycle: use, release, renew.
Through biomimicry project work, Pia began exploring what that pattern might look like applied to coffee cups. Not disposable. Not forever. But something in between: a retiring cup, designed to age, release, and work with how humans actually behave.

Biology: Mussels attach using temporary byssal threads that allow them to hold fast in turbulent conditions, release when needed, and continuously renew their attachment.

If you stand near the bins outside a cafe for long enough, and I've done this more than is probably healthy, you'll see the full spectrum of human coffee cup disposal anxiety play out. Some people, zero hesitation. The whole thing goes in. Cup, lid, one bin, one and done, moving on. Others pause. They'll lick that chocolate froth off the lid first, and then stand there staring at the two bins like they're trying to diffuse a bomb almost. Cup in one, lid in the other, both in one? Wait, hang on, is this one recyclable or is that general waste? The majority of us are trying to do the right thing. We just can't always tell what that right thing is. Growing up in the 80s in Australia, we had a really famous TV campaign all about do the right thing. The concept was put rubbish in the bin, not on the ground. Simple. Now it means separate the components, rinse them if possible, identify the material composition, find the correct receptacle, then crush your fingers and just hope the system actually works. And offer an object that costs about 11 cents to make and will outlive our grandchildren. Four minutes of usefulness, centuries of consequence. That's chaos in my view. That's a design crime. I'm Pia, and this is Feral by Design. Stick with me, you may never look at your takeaway coffee the same way again. Today's adventure involves muscles, coffee, and a retirement plan. Here's what most people don't realize. That cup is paper, plastic liner, and glue. Three incompatible materials forced to cooperate for four minutes. And the part that looks most recyclable, the paper cup part, is actually worse than a clear plastic cup when it comes to recycling because of that hidden liner that's bonded inside. And yes, there are PLA lined compostable cups now, except most cities don't have the facilities to actually compost them. It needs industrial composting systems. So even when we buy the eco-friendly option and feel a bit good about ourselves in doing so, it still goes to landfill. We're doing the right thing. The system just isn't. We've basically engineered one of the most over-engineered disposable objects on the planet. According to WWF Australia, we throw away roughly 3,500 takeaway coffee cups every minute. Every minute. Which is why, a while ago, I was working on a project in the coffee space. We were looking at ways to improve the life-friendliness of the classic takeaway cup. God knows I've got a whole shelf of reusable cups at home. So that was both professional interest and a personal pain point. For one aspect of this project, I went looking for answers underwater, naturally. Because if anything's mastered temporary adhesion in wet, chaotic conditions, it's something living in the ocean. Okay, goggles on. I've got some engineers I want you to meet. Introducing the mussel. Picture the coastline at low tide. Rocks covered in dark, clustered shells, just hanging there like they've been caught high and dry with their pants down. Mussels don't just choose their seat and sit. At high tide, they have to anchor themselves against incredibly powerful waves, currents, boat churn, forces that would tear most human structures apart. So how does something that small hold on in chaos like that? Tiny protein fibres called byssus threads. Part rope, part shock absorber, part superglue. It's all the same. One material, multiple behaviours. It's flexible where it needs to flex, it's rigid where it needs to grip, and it's shock absorbing where it needs to take the biggest hits. It's like using the same dough to make a stretchy pizza base, a rigid watercracker, and a waterproof seal. All from the one recipe. Biodegradable, non-toxic, and safe for marine life. And tucked inside that biology is a second neat little trick. Those byssus threads, they don't just last for one wave, but they also don't last a lifetime. They last for the conditions they're in, then the muscle sheds them and grows new ones. They use, they release, they renew. Back on dry land and into our coffee project. One idea that rose to the top at the time was creating a bioliner inspired by muscle adhesive proteins. Now here's the thing before you go, ooh, that's all so sci-fi, it isn't so out there. Scientists have isolated the muscles adhesive gene, placed it into bacteria, and now brew actual muscle adhesive in bioreactors. Kind of like brewing beer but stickier. I for one vote beer and muscles go very well together. No muscles are harmed, same chemistry, same behaviour, completely biodegradable. This protein is already in surgical glues and wound dressings. Some products are commercial, others are in late-stage trials, so it is coming. The material is real, it's just not yet scaled at the volume or the prices that the hospitality industry needs. Crucially, this isn't a plastic liner laminated on with high heat. It's a thin coating that biodegrades completely. Nothing to peel, no microplastics. The whole cup breaks down together. In domestic compost, in soil, even in the ocean. So the technology works, the biology works, packaging scale, not quite, but almost. So we filed it away as a promising near-future direction, but the muscles stayed with me well after that project wrapped. Because it showed me a bigger pattern. See what you think. The muscle survives chaos through one simple rhythm. Use, release, renew. And I think that pattern has a parallel with our coffee culture. We grab a cup, we use it, we let it go, we grab another one tomorrow. Can you see it? Same behaviour, opposite consequences. The muscles let go of its thread and leaves no trace. We let go of the cup and we leave a landfill mess. In that project, we'd basically bio-reinforced the coffee cup as like a one-night stand. Great in the moment, useless in the morning. Throw in a touch of regret. Even with a more life-friendly liner, we were still designing a one-and-done object. This simple behaviour pattern shifted my thinking from what's the smarter material to what's the smarter system? We always think something has to be disposable or last a lifetime. But muscles show us a third option, this smart, temporary middle, something that meets humans where we actually are, forgetful, rushed, human. If muscle threads can handle heat, turbulence, and constant water, why was all that durability only inside the cup in our design? What if the real unlock was bringing the muscle strategy to the outside too? The concept is elegantly simple in design. Coat the inside and the outside of the paper cup with that muscle-inspired protein. These coatings are heat stable far beyond anything a dishwasher or hot coffee can throw at them. And suddenly the cup can survive cafe dishwashers, office and home domestic dishwashers, getting stacked, being reused 10, maybe 20 times. Importantly, not a permanent plastic cup and not a single-use cup. I like to call it a retiring cup. Designed to age gracefully. Light, stackable, and still familiar, but built for a short, useful second life. Because it's still fully biodegradable, cafes don't need deposits, apps, sign-ups, special bins, tracking. If it comes back, great. Wash it alongside your normal ceramic cups and reuse it. If it doesn't, fine. It breaks down cleanly in household compost, soil, even marine environments. A reusable cup without the reusable system. The return program is built into the material itself. Reuse without friction, reuse without guilt, reuse without the infrastructure. So picture this. You grab your usual flat white, decaf, of course, the perks of this one-way transmission podcast, I can't hear all of those shouts right now. The cup feels like a normal takeaway cup. Same weight, same stack, same lid lift, but this one can survive a few wash cycles. It might have a fade marker on the side showing how many uses it has left when its time is nigh. You finish a coffee on your walk or at your desk. You can drop that cup in at any cafe you pass or pop it into your home or office dishwasher or into your compost. Stack a few up over a few days and return them in a batch if you're lazy. And when it's done? Into either your compost bin or into the cafe's compost bin, which increasingly in Australia, cafes are being required to have anyway. No app, no deposit, no remembering the right cup. Just a muscle-inspired shortcut to less waste and fewer coffee ghosts in Landfill. That's the thing about borrowing from nature. You start with one question and it hands you a better one. I went looking for a smarter material. The muscles pointed me to a smarter cycle, one that works with how humans actually behave right now. We keep asking how long something should last. Nature asks how well it can leave. So tomorrow, when you're standing at that bin again, maybe the question won't be which bin, but why is it designed this way at all? And that's where change starts. And in the tennish minutes we've spent here, underwater with mussels drinking coffee, 35,000 cups have been thrown away in Australia alone. Stay curious.
