When Harden Hook arrives in Dodge City, half-starved and desperate for work, Marshal Matt Dillon offers him a helping hand. But Hook's past as a Confederate raider who participated in the violent Lawrence, Kansas raid of 1856 catches up with him when two former companions recognize him. The arrival of these old enemies threatens not just Hook's safety, but his chance at redemption in a town that's become his last hope.

The situation escalates when Jeb Wingate discovers that Hook killed his brother Lou during that same fateful raid. Hiring Hook under false pretences, Jeb plans revenge at his isolated ranch. Matt and Chester arrive just in time to stop the murder plot.
