For two months, a predator had been working the darkened parks and canyon roads of Los Angeles — a stocky, blonde man who flashed a badge, then turned on his victims with his fists. Fifteen robberies. Fifteen assaults. Sergeants Joe Friday and Ben Romero of the LAPD were hunting a ghost: the Badge Bandit, Charles Kirby, a man the department knew by description but couldn’t catch. When the trail finally closed in a canyon road confrontation, Kirby rammed their vehicle and vanished into the brush, leaving both detectives hospitalized. Friday walked out in two days. Romero stayed ten.

Back on duty, Friday was assigned to a decoy operation — parked on Mulholland Drive in the small hours with Policewoman Dorothy River, waiting for Kirby to take the bait. He did. The arrest came quickly, quietly — until the system stumbled.

SPEAKER_05

Another steak, I was the same down.

SPEAKER_06

Another murder in Highland Park?

SPEAKER_05

No, my the badge bandit wouldn't pose it as a policeman.

SPEAKER_06

Move that one. Certainly ought to do something about him.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, well, we're trying to. We cannot find him.

SPEAKER_06

There's gonna be defeat in the paper about it tonight. They're terrible the way he beats up people and robs them. See that, Sandra. The way he treats women. Oh, you get a shame. They ought to put him away.

SPEAKER_05

You know. You have tomorrow eye bread?

SPEAKER_06

Mm-hmm. You're gonna have tomorrow off, Joker.

SPEAKER_05

The captain says he works to stay through, so we give the guy.

SPEAKER_06

I thought you were gonna have tomorrow off. You ought to tell the captain, you need your wrecks. You can't go online if it's working all hour. You'll be coming down to work one of these days.

SPEAKER_05

Fifteen robberies, fifteen assaults, all in two months. How many gotta stop them? You ready?

SPEAKER_06

Can't they warn the people? Wouldn't be getting robbed and beaten up if they were parking with lonely crazy.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Long freedom can't do anything about that, Mark. Public place.

SPEAKER_06

Mm-hmm. I throw this in the hand of trade. That's sure if it is. In stewing beef's just running together. Then we're gonna eat with you.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, his wife's sore too. He hasn't been home much since we started on it. That's a tough one.

SPEAKER_06

All that rotting, heating, huh? Couldn't be deep.

SPEAKER_05

Well. You set the alarm. I got us checked back in at eight in the morning.

SPEAKER_06

Eight o'clock?

SPEAKER_05

Badge man has got two more victims tonight. They're a college kid. Doctor said he didn't think we should talk to him tonight, so what I've seen tomorrow morning about.

SPEAKER_06

Really badly injured.

SPEAKER_05

Nope. Pretty bad. A boy took the trouble being a girl with the task thing done. Well, it's very good, Ma. I'm better get to bed.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, but your face looks so thin. You need all the rest you can get.

SPEAKER_05

I get it.

SPEAKER_06

I won't be film out first thing.

SPEAKER_05

Hello. It's Lorman done homicide jewel. Sorry to bother you. Yeah, Lorman. Please do. Captain wants you or Romero to meet him in Hollywood and Laurel right away. What's the matter now? Tagging hold up in Laurel Canyon 20 minutes ago. Yeah? Got the area blocked off. Figure they got the man trapped. The victims get a look at the gunny. Same description, the badge banded. I left the house, went over and picked up Ben. We drove out to the edge of the Santa Monica Mountains where Hollywood full of our dams and Laurel Canyon begin. We headed back into the canyon to the blockaded area. Captain Steed from Homicide was there waiting for Kemp. Have them tell them I'll invent tour to start moving in. Sorry to call you back. Couldn't be helped. Okay. How's it shaping up?

SPEAKER_07

Commander search detail in the vicinity of Laurel Canyon. Unit 62K reports that they are at Mulholland Drive and Oakitone Avenue. Nothing further to report.

SPEAKER_05

Covers just about all the Laurel Canyon district. Badge bandit got his victims near the top of this hill here. Well, the man who called in said the bandit had trouble starting his car. Finally had left it and took off into the brush. It was headed west on this road here. All right. Any report from the detail up on Canyon Road? Nothing yet. I'll stand by the radio. How much area we got to cover? From the mouth of the canyon here and all the way back to Ventura Boulevard. On the west here, from Lookout Mountain Avenue over to Perthview Drive on the east. How much have we got to go on? Crowley talked to the victims for a minute before they took him to Georgia Street. Yeah. The guy's description's the same. Heavy set, blonde hair, chubby face, on ring battle. Mm-hmm. He's on foot. There's plenty of underbrush around here to hide it. Wait a minute, uh, before they get this call in for a sailor. Have communications contact them to QK. Don't go there line faking air. Yeah. We'll have the other flow thin from the west to the north. Right. You two gotta get up on Rowland Drive. Line's pretty thin up there. I'll use the help. Is that the area where you've been in the car? Yeah. I want you to cover all the houses in that area. Check with everybody you can find in the neighborhood. I may be able to help. If they don't answer, find out why. Okay. I'll be making the rounds another ten minutes. Check with you then. All right, thanks so much. So one more thing, catch you. I'll tell you what I told the rest of the men. This guy's in a corner and he's got a gun. There's only one way out for him. Make sure it's not you. 3 45 a.m. Ben and I drove up to Groveland Drive and joined the search. We started our house canvas of the neighborhood where the suspect had abandoned his car. None of the residents had any further information to give him. 4 a.m. We kept on checking. 23 hours. Long get, yeah. I could use some sleep. What a mine is boiling man. She even mad the kid. Yeah? What's the trouble? Oh, and her sent down some flower bulb from Oregon yet, the bloody old bulb. Yeah. Kid was playing with a little girl next door yesterday, and they found the box, the flower bug. They put the mess of them in a pot of water and boiled them on the stove. What'd they do that for? Oh no. There is another house up ahead. We better check it. They ought to get them street lights up here. At night, working people up in the middle of the night. I don't like it any more than they do. Which we can make them believe that. Nice neighborhood up here. Wonder what the price is on these lugs. Well, it shouldn't be too high and say real estate's coming down. Yeah? What is it? Police officers. If I had to disturb them, we'd like to talk to you a minute.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, all right. Let me get the door open. What's been going on in the neighborhood tonight? Some kind of trouble? Cars racing up and down the hill? What's the trouble? Have you noticed any strangers in the neighborhood lads? No. No, I just got to bed 20 minutes ago. I work out at Fairmont. We're shooting night.

SPEAKER_05

What's all the commotion anyway? Orden for a suspect. He's supposed to be around this area.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I haven't seen anybody.

SPEAKER_05

I thought I heard somebody out of the garage a few minutes ago. Went out and looked around, but I didn't see anything. You checked to see if your car is still in the garage? No, I left it in the driveway. No, sir, there's no car in your driveway. Sure there is.

SPEAKER_03

Let me show you. Hey, a gone. And we'll use your phone. Yeah. Yeah, but I saw it just a few minutes ago. The car was right there in the driveway. You think that guy took my car?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, just a pretty good bet. You got your license number handy here. I don't remember it. I got it on a card in my wallet. Give me a communication. Can you give it the description of your car? It's a Plymouth to Dan, black. In the dam, listen. Search detail, all canyon. I got some new information for all units in the detail. Here's the license number. Uh, when you broadcast this information to all units in the third detail, what would they make and model your car? 43 Black Limeth, a two-door to dam. Uh 1946 Black Plymouth, two doors to dam, license number. Uh, 7X-ray 2569. This car's just been stolen from 102-11 Grosven Drive. Any identifying marks on the car? Well, I left my keys in it. No, no, sir. I mean any special markings on the car. Maybe a dent in one of the fenders. Well, good George. Hold on, we get it.

SPEAKER_03

Uh, the right headlight went out on me last night. I haven't had it fixed yet.

SPEAKER_05

The right headlight on the car is out. Notify all units in the search detail that we believe the suspect is now in possession of this car. Fine, thank you. Let's go.

SPEAKER_03

Must have happened in the last 16 minutes. I heard that noise and I went out to check. The car was there then.

SPEAKER_05

Well, here's our car and we'll be checking with you later.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I sure hope you find it. I don't know how I can get to work tomorrow without my car. Well, we'll notify. Yeah, yeah, I sure hope you find it.

SPEAKER_05

Thanks for your help, man. World Dev.

SPEAKER_06

Great 569. Repeat. 569. For a distance stolen from 1021, Groveland Dry. The right headlight is out. Oh my god, the least affected non-session is our key three things.

SPEAKER_05

I don't think you could have gotten it card to the blockage, yet you better start searching the side roads. Yeah. Wait a minute, did the car coming down the hill through it? You're always making time. Yo. Only one headlight on the door. Let's turn around quick. Get over to the M5.

SPEAKER_06

Attention, all units. Special attention, all units in Philly.

SPEAKER_05

You're right. Ben. An ambulance was called, and Ben and I were taken to Georgia Street Receiving Hospital. There I received emergency treatment for multiple cuts and bruises and a sprained left shoulder. Fenn didn't do so well. He had a possible concussion, two broken ribs, and a half a dozen severe cuts about the face and arm. We were then taken to the PF ward. Next afternoon we had a visit from Captain Steve and Chief of Detective Sad Brownfield. Braddy, how are you feeling? Oh, pretty good, Chief. It saw Romero across the hall. You came out better than he did. Yeah. That's what I hear. Are you resting, Amy? Oh, much better. No danger involved. Needs rest, that's about all. How long? Oh, you'll be here two weeks, according to Doctor. What about you? Couple of days. Too bad, Joe. Badge band? Yeah. Looks like you two got banged up for nothing. Oh? After he rammed your car, he ditched Black Plymouth, and then we figure he hit the underbrush. Yeah. Somehow, when we were all on you and Ben out of that wreck, he slipped through the line. Any fingerprints on the car? Only you. It's rotten luck. I guess it was his night, huh? We're getting more men from Metro Division to help out. Dang. And we're doubling the number of decoys around the city. Police women, huh? Yeah, we'll have each of them planted in the parked car along with an officer in every area of the badge bed that's been working. All we have to do is grab it to bait once. Yeah, if he goes for it. And plenty of time to choose. We work the same setup every night till we reach him. Big operation. Might have to run it for a week unless he quit. Well, there's only one way a guy like that ever quit. Yeah, when we stop him. Saturday, March 10th at 2 p.m. I was released from the PF ward and went home. Ben stayed on at the hot fiddle. He had at least another ten days to go before release. Sunday I fent at home. Monday afternoon I checked back in at the office, and Captain Seed put me on decoy duty for that week along with policewoman Dorothy River. We were assigned to cover an isolated parking area near Moholland Drive and Beverly Glane. With a nice view that the duty was slow. No sign on the bad bend. Policewoman River and I waited it out from late evening to early morning, from Monday through Thursday. Friday night came, same thing. We waited.

SPEAKER_08

How's Danny see him today?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, you're doing fine. Be out next week. Well, sure.

SPEAKER_08

You want to figure it out?

SPEAKER_05

Thank you. Go find me there.

SPEAKER_08

Long ride.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Long.

SPEAKER_08

Just alone. Show me up here on the area.

SPEAKER_05

How full of kid. Just going out.

SPEAKER_08

Ready to cry, found you? Stay grass in the air.

SPEAKER_05

The look of your gold, you can have my code. It doesn't bother me anything.

SPEAKER_08

No, no, that's right, Joe. Okay. Beautiful view from up here in the all the light.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

You like to dance, Joe? I said, do you like a dance?

SPEAKER_05

Once in a while, I guess I'm not too good at the point.

SPEAKER_08

Well, they're caught having this big annual dance two weeks from Fraterty.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

I might get a kick out of it for him.

SPEAKER_05

It leaves me out. I don't own a tech.

SPEAKER_08

He could rent one, it'd be fun.

SPEAKER_05

Afraid I don't look good in a tech.

SPEAKER_08

I never met a man who thought he did. Why don't you try it?

SPEAKER_05

I might be working.

SPEAKER_08

Well, I mean if you're not working, how'd you come?

SPEAKER_05

You going?

SPEAKER_08

I was planning on it.

SPEAKER_05

Got a date?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. I have hope.

SPEAKER_05

There's a car pulling in.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Parked over in the back of it.

SPEAKER_08

I can only make out one person in the car.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Looks like a man I can't make sure. Alright, getting on over closer. We might as well look the part, huh? Alright.

SPEAKER_08

Coming with what?

SPEAKER_05

Walking over to the side of the road. Got a flashlight. Looking around.

SPEAKER_08

And I don't like the bad gun.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, he's turning around. He's got his flashlight on.

SPEAKER_08

Coming up on your side of the car.

SPEAKER_05

I take it easy, you know what to do. Come on, I'll let the car. Please help.

SPEAKER_04

All right, hold on. Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_02

Come on, I get out of the car, blonde you. All right, so the dunny.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Now I'll get the cup, Frenny.

SPEAKER_05

Thanks. I didn't think I hit him there hard.

SPEAKER_08

You didn't, I did.

SPEAKER_05

Policewoman Dorothy River Knight took the suspect to Hollywood Division, where he was booked on suspicion of robbery and gave his name as Charles Leon Kirby, age 46. Monday, March 19th, Ben was released from the hospital and he checked back in for word. A special show-up was held at which ten of the 17 victims definitely identified Kirby as the bad family. The suspect had finally been apprehended. Now we started the slow process of formally charging the man and presenting our evidence against him to bring him to trial. 10 a.m. Sen and I went across the street to the sixth floor of the Hall of Justice to present our case against Kirby and to obtain a formal coupling against him. We met with Deputy District Attorney Broker.

SPEAKER_04

When you get out of the hospital, then showed that sick to that place. Heard about your accident.

SPEAKER_05

That guy sure gave enough trouble, didn't he? Yeah, he's still giving us trouble. How's that? He got in a tangle with another prisoner out in Hollywood division.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah?

SPEAKER_05

The other prisoner gave Kirby a pretty bad going over. Cut him up and broke his left forearm. They're moving him in an ambulance through Hollywood to the prison ward at the General Hospital. When did this happen? This this morning. I think they're moving him downtown now. Tough one. How about the reports on Kirby? Are they all in order? Here's a summary report. Ledges 10 positive identifications containing 10 counts for robbery and 10 counts for forcible wraith. Mm-hmm. Here were here are seven other crime reports. Only far identification on means. Okay. What do you got for crow riding evidence gas? Oh, we went through Kirby's department, found at least a dozen pieces of property that he took from his victims. Mm-hmm. Mostly watches and jewelry. The victims identified every piece we found.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, let me get the details out. So excuse me a minute. Drift. Broker speaking. Yeah, it's not you, Friday.

SPEAKER_05

Family. Friday. When? Yeah, right away. Ballette bedded. Went to my Kirby. She just broke out of that ambulance.

SPEAKER_09

And now it's true.

SPEAKER_02

You are listening to Dragnet, the case history of a police investigation, presented in the public interest by Fatima cigarettes. If you smoke a long cigarette, it will be in your interest to listen to a typical case history of a Fatima smoker. It's the case of Mr. Richard Watts, Jr., drama critic of one of New York's great newspapers. This is his actual signed statement.

SPEAKER_03

My working day starts when most people are going to bed. When the curtain closes on the last act, I've got a newspaper deadline to make. Working more means smoking more. And that's when Fatima quality really tells. I agree. It's wise to smoke extra miles fatima. And so do more and more smokers every day. Actual figures show extra miles fatima has more than doubled its smokers coast to coast. So enjoy extra mild fatima yourself. The king-sized cigarette, which contains the finest Turkish and domestic tobaccos, superbly blended to make it extra mild.

SPEAKER_02

You will prefer Fatima's much different, much better flavor. You will agree. It's wise to smoke extra mild Fatima.

SPEAKER_01

It's wise to smoke extra mild fatima.

SPEAKER_03

The best of all. With long cigarettes.

SPEAKER_05

As soon as word of Kirby's escape came through, the information was broadcast to all points. All available cruiser cars and men were rushed to the escape area, and the door-to-door canvas got underway. All of the men were given mugshots to Kirby together with his description. 11 a.m., Fenn and I got back to the office. We found a message from Captain Steed to meet him in the Chief of the Detective's office.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_05

What's the story, Chief? Well, I'm trying to find out. Where'd he make the break? Yeah, fourth and main. Couldn't have picked a better thought. The ambulance has just crossed third and main when Kirby plugged the guard. The driver was too busy dodging traffic to notice what was going on in back. Well, it's a lousy break. Kirby jumped out of the back end of the ambulance and disappeared in the crowd. No silent sense. Well, that's fine. Takes us almost three months to reach the guy, and he breaks away on a cheap floop like that. Well, he doesn't have many friends in town. He's only got one we know of. Yeah. My brother. Kirby stays with him pretty often, from what we can gather. And the brother lives in a roomy house down on Alameda. Will nobody check that guess? We've got it staked out. The brother works at a box factory in the south end of town. That's covered too. He's not going far with a broken arm. What do you got?

SPEAKER_03

Farm shop rolled up next three here, a few months ago.

SPEAKER_05

Here's a description of an order, man. Stop your bill, blonde hair, horn rim, black, it's chubby face. You were wrong about that. Broken arm. Come on. 11:40 a.m. Ben and I folded up at the East Asia Farm Shop on 6th Street. Inside, we found a proprietor, Morris Brewbaker, lying propped up against one of the showcases. He was an elderly man, and his face and head showed the marks of a savage beating. His wounds were hemorrhaging badly, and the ambulance attendants were giving him first aid. We showed him Charles Kirby's mugshot.

SPEAKER_04

I wouldn't make a mistake, actually. Well, he alarmed this brewbaker. He had by himself. He has to look at a watch, and when I turned to get it, he kicked me. I fell against the showcase and cut myself. He pulled me in the back room. I didn't even know the cell. He kept beating me, eating it, true baker.

SPEAKER_05

Let me get this conflict done. Much did he get away with, dear?

SPEAKER_04

I I I'm not sure.

SPEAKER_05

Blue suit, blue overcoat, wrap around, and navy blue bullet. He he kept hitting me. I have you out of here in a minute.

SPEAKER_04

He kept hitting me like a crazy septic my stingwheel.

SPEAKER_05

Okay. What else did you take much fruit baker? Can you remember? Uh yeah, uh from the cash register. He took money. How much? $1540, I can't be sure. I mean, that's your store. Did you see which way we draw? I don't know. He he he dragged me in the back room, he locked me in. Hey, moving nonsense. Okay. I don't know. I'm going through the shelves there and um the back of the counter. I don't know. What'd you keep, uh? My uh account books and my gun boxed of shelves, too. You want to take a look, Ben? Yeah. My cats after the shake it, we feel they're gonna be a minute now. Account booked it too, there. Yeah. He got the gun. 4 p.m. Kirby, alias the badge bandit, was still at large. As far as we were concerned, the case was almost back to where it started from 11 weeks before. The suspect was still loot, was well armed, was still free to rob, assault, or murder. We had two big advantages: Kirby's possible broken arm, which would need medical attention, and secondly, the lead to Kirby's brother. At 5:30 p.m., we had a report that the suspect was seen purchasing a ticket at a theater box office out on Hollywood Boulevard. We ran it down. It didn't pay off. At 6:15, a taxi driver thought he plotted Kirby boarding an outbound streetcar at Figaro and Fico. Was checked out. No result. At 7 o'clock, Ben and I got something to eat at a drive-in, and we relieved the men on stake out of the rooming house on Alameda Street where Kirby's brother was staying. 10 p.m. midnight. No sign of Kirby. We waited. At 3 a.m., Hampton and Cummings of Homicide relieved us and Ben drove me home. It was 3 45 when he dropped me on Pitcoliff Avenue, number 465.

SPEAKER_06

Drill Battery.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, Ma, I didn't mean to wake you.

SPEAKER_06

What sound is?

SPEAKER_05

Almost four.

SPEAKER_06

And it's late hour. You got to say yes, Long Rabbit goes.

SPEAKER_05

We'll be all right, La. Got something to eat and you ain't bought it.

SPEAKER_06

There's a little hole meat and some things in the cupboard.

SPEAKER_05

Just want a sandwich.

SPEAKER_06

If I had some dice meatballs and spaghetti for dinner, I can bond the dun sorry. Hi, Sandy working all outer.

SPEAKER_05

I wish she wouldn't get up more. I can figure something.

SPEAKER_06

Why not the meatballs, it's spaghetti. You need something from stamp, sure.

SPEAKER_05

I get it. Yeah, Larman. Thought you'd like to know they just got Kirby. Where? And his brother plays about 15 minutes ago. Hansen and Cummings grabbed him. Any trouble? No. Grabbed him before he got to his gun. You just locked him up, thought you'd like to know. Yeah. Thanks, Warren. Good night. The office, Ma. The gut could'll be the badge band.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, big face. Maybe you had some time else, you know.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Never fails, that it you work on a case for three months. Leave it for 30 minutes and it's all over.

SPEAKER_06

Is there anything else you robbed?

SPEAKER_05

No, no, that's fine, Ma. You go on to bed.

SPEAKER_06

Well, all right, Georges. Don't say it too long.

SPEAKER_05

All right. All right. Hey, Mark.

SPEAKER_06

Yes, sir.

SPEAKER_05

Have I still got that old tuxedo around?

SPEAKER_02

The story you have just heard was true. Only the names were changed to protect the innocent. On June 27th, trial was held in Superior Court, Department 87, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California. In a moment, the results of that trial.

SPEAKER_05

It's amazing how many long cigarette smokers are changing to extra mild Fatima. Here is the actual report. From coast to coast, extra mild Fatima have more than doubled its smoker.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, more and more smokers every day are discovering that Fatima is the king-sized cigarette steady is extra mild.

SPEAKER_05

Extra mild because it contains the finest Turkish and domestic tobaccos, superbly blended to make it extra mild, to give it a much different, much better flavor and aroma.

SPEAKER_02

Enjoy extra mild fatima yourself. The best of all long cigarettes.

SPEAKER_01

It's wise to smoke extra mild fatima. It's wise to smoke extra mild fatima.

SPEAKER_02

Charles Leon Kirby, alias the Badge Bandit, was tried and convicted in Superior Court on several counts of armed robbery, rape, and assault with intent to commit murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonments. After serving one year in the state penitentiary, he was judged insane and committed to the state mental hospital at Mendocino. After two months there, he escaped. Charles Kirby, alias the badge bandit, is still at large. You have just heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases from official files. Technical advice for Dragnet comes from the Office of Chief of Police, W.A. Wharton. This is NBC, the National Broadcasting Company.
