Welcome to another episode of Wake There's More Get a Skinny with Sue and Kim. This podcast is all about real talk, real experiences, and the real journey behind weight loss, health, and learning how to actually keep it all. I'm Sue and my co-host is Kim. And together we've spent years navigating the ups and downs, victories, and challenges of weight loss, mindset, and lifestyle change. Around here, we believe weight loss is the only part of the journey. Each week, we're diving into topics like long-term weight loss success, mindset shifts, gastric surgery journeys, fitness, nutrition, motivation, and everyday struggles that women face when trying to live a few lives. We are not medical professionals. Everything we share on this podcast comes from our personal experiences, opinions, and the lessons we've learned along the way. Think of this podcast like sitting down with two friends who have been through it, figured some things out, and now we're here to share the truth about what it really takes to transform your life and keep the weight off. So go grab your cup of coffee or even your protein shake, and let's get real about health, weight loss, and everything in between. Because remember, wait, there's more. Hey, we're back. Hey everyone, thanks for tuning in. And we are in studio. I bet you're all excited. Right? Finally. Yeah. We got a couple of um comfy chairs and um a little new look. So it's been so long. We thought we'd take this day and and get in studio for once. Our lives are so busy. Yeah, it it's 70 degrees out, but we're in here for you. Yes, exactly. On a Sunday. And we're here to actually talk about ourselves and our own little struggles as of lately, what we're struggling on. We always feel like we have a subject, but maybe it's time to get to know um a little more about us and and our actual struggles.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we were just kind of, I don't know, hitting a plateau with with topics and you know, what can we really do to help? And we keep saying it's this is real talk, a conversation between two friends. Yeah. And what you don't see is we do sit here and talk for a while before we even hit record. And I thought, let's just bring the group into that and talk about what we're struggling with right now. Like what's here we are, you know, March 2026. You know, what what is life for us? Um, rather than sounding like we have everything all together and we're just trying to reach out and help people, we're also struggling. Yeah, you know, we have our own personal stuff going on. So we thought we'd talk about it.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, it's uh you you set the new year with challenges, or some people do resolutions or goals, and you know, kind of you get to a place where either you've already failed or you've plateaued, or you just haven't come up with a another challenge for yourself. And you know, life gets busy. We're we're so busy, sometimes it's really hard for us to get together in studio to even record. And, you know, lately I've been so busy with my coaching practice that you know I struggle with eating at a normal time or eating a normal meal. It's mostly like run downstairs, grab something, and come back to the desk. And, you know, those aren't healthy patterns, and somehow I have to just flip that switch and and get back to refocusing on you know, eating three healthy meals like I used to, and you know, doing the right things, like I'm getting enough water, but that you know, we don't have any snacks in the house. So sometimes I struggle with you know that midday, oh my gosh, I need like chocolate or what you know, something salty, and I'll run downstairs real quick and kind of like look around, disgusted that we don't have it. And so then I go try to refocus on um, you know, a non-food activity to keep my mind off of that chocolate I want so bad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you need that distraction. Yeah, yeah. I imagine your schedule is all over the place because you're trying to meet the needs of who've ever who's ever reached out to you, your your coaching uh clients, and uh I can see where that would really, you know, your your main focus is them right now. So you're kind of putting yourself on the back burner burner and your schedule, your normal routine has flipped.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah, I mean, and I, you know, taking on this journey of a podcast, you know, um we have full-time jobs, so it it it was a struggle in the beginning, and I've gotten busier at work, so it's even harder to get together. Um, I don't mind doing the off-site podcast, you know, version of that. But um I struggle with, you know, how I'm prioritizing my day and you know, where does this fit in? And I'm still struggling with my weight gain. Um, we'll say it's 10 pounds, it goes up and down so much right now. But um, I set a new goal for myself this morning when I was at spin class. I'm like, I have to lose 20 pounds. I mean, there's just no way I'm gonna get where I've been wanting to go if I don't just think about that every day. So I've been struggling with um how to get back to my goal weight, which I never hit, but um, I think I've reset my goal weight a few times. But um yeah, I mean we just blew through January and February, and very typically we all kind of fall off the wagon. Um, so you know, we're just kind of checking in um and trying to reset the mindset once again. And like Sue has said before, just forget about yesterday and just start over today. Just, you know, um clean slate every morning. Um and just, you know, keep trying.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I I feel like we all go through this, and you know, we want you as listeners to know like we go through it too. It and this is why we're here to to share and um you know, motivate everyone that's struggling today that let's just flip the switch and and you know, have a restart and don't even look back, just go forward and you know, tomorrow morning get in front of that mirror and say, I'm gonna do this. And you know, I have to do that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, oh for sure. I mean, if any if we wanted to clarify anything, it's that we are not experts. Uh we're we're living you living this with you all. Um and and maybe we're not. I mean, maybe maybe your journey is like completely different, and I'm the one that's like teetering on the on the scale. But uh yeah, it's it's been, I don't know, it's been a the year has gone by fast. The last two weeks really drug for me. Yeah, I don't know if it's like the weather change because it is 70 degrees out where it was 19. Um, those big fluctuations. Um, I wake up with really pounding sinus headaches. Yeah. Um, and they like wrap around the back of my head. It's a really weird feeling. So, like this morning before I went to spin, my husband's like, Oh, you're gonna come back in a better mood. And I'm like, Well, I'm not in a bad mood, my head just hurts. Like, it's it's just sinus pressure. I'm sorry that like I'm I woke up on the right side of the bed. I was charged, I was ready to go. It just doesn't, well, and menopause too, right? So I feel like I'm like not feeling any emotions. So that's another one of my struggles is like what I'm thinking could be all positive, but what you see on my face is not. Like it, I look like I'm in deep thought or something. And then, but in my head, I'm like, oh, that was really good that he did that, or I'm you know, I'm really proud of him, or um, you know, I'm so grateful for everything I have, but like it doesn't come out that way. Yeah. Like I'm just stuck in this weird, like cold emotional state, which is which I think is is the menopause, the hormonal stuff that I'm going through right now. But um, you know, I feel I struggle with that because I feel bad. Like I want it to show up here just as much, the inside on the outside. I think a lot of people would relate more to we put that fake facade on when when everything internally is not going well. Yep, yeah. So mine's kind of in reverse. Like I feel like I'm in a good place, but I'm not showing it. Yeah, you know, yeah. So I'm working on that. I any any tips? Please help us. Yeah, please, please log in and comment and uh tell me what what what I can do to fix that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I feel um I don't know. I think my menopause just kind of blew by me, and I didn't even know that I would. The only thing I noticed is I wasn't having my periods. Right, the obvious, right? Which is and you know, and I think I did like have hot flashes, but other than that, I feel like it's just it was just something that happened, and I didn't realize I was even in it until it was over. I think that happens, and um it and it's the same way, like you know, everyone it's like a pregnancy, and you're having contractions, and everyone's like, Oh my gosh, my contractions are a minute apart, blah, blah, blah. I just thought, oh, my stomach's cramping up a little bit. I wasn't timing them. I had no idea. I just thought it was like normal stomach cramp. And um, until uh, you know, obviously four times later, you know, boom, they're out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I know I remember when they put that tape on me and they're like, you're having a contraction right now. I'm like, really? Yeah, like looking around, like, I don't understand this. Yeah, yeah. But yeah, I think you know, we all that's a good example. We all experience pregnancies differently. Um, menopause and definitely menopause differently. Yes, I was very blessed to have my first pregnancy be the easy one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, and you know, I I think I don't know if I had the hard one first if I would have done it again. You know what I mean? Like menopause. I'm glad it's only one time. I certainly don't want to do this again. And for me, it's some hot flashes, it's definitely mood swings. Um I don't know, I'm I'm sure there's people in my life that would say I've been on one giant mood swing ever since I was born. But and validated, I'm with you, people. Um, I I know I know what I was back then. You know, whatever I went through, childhood trauma, whatever. Um, nobody knew my story, so they just thought I was, you know, a bee. Yeah, yeah. But I mean, you know, I think once you grow up and and hit this stage, like, you know, you feel all the feelings, you know, all the emotions of menopause and whatnot. And um looking back, I, you know, sure, I wish I could have changed a lot of things, but I think we can all have that forgiveness of like, we didn't know their story, you know, whoever I may have mistreated or whatnot. Um again, another struggle that you know, my whole life, just trying to be a good person and be compassionate, and um, which you know brought us to this. Obviously, you know, it's in Sue's heart and my heart to just want to help people um go through something we went through because this is kind of big, you know. The the surgery was was a big deal. And um, you know, I wish I knew all of this in my 20s, you know, or even younger. Um, but I hope that everybody could just say, you know what, that person probably was going through something and we don't know their backstory. And, you know, not very few people know what I went through, and I'm I'm better for it now. Um, I have my faith, which is huge, and um, you know, current daily life, you know, I've got two adult children at home, and I feel like we've been having these like family meetings where we like we need to talk, you know, like guys, you know, I I'm going through menopause. I don't think it was ever meant to be that our adult children were at home with us. Like that's that wasn't the normal format. Like the world has changed, I get it. But like, let's figure out a way to like kumbaya together and get it right. Like, it is just yeah, things just aren't necessarily working there either. So, like, my my daily struggle is having a full house with adults, like it was different with kids. Obviously, it was what God intended, but like I pray every day, is this what I'm supposed to be? Like, I want them to, you know, be able to afford to live out in the world someday, and Lord knows they can't right now. So, um, yeah, we're just trying to find a way to live together with the two dogs. Yeah, you know, it's it's the house gets really small with grown adults and um, you know, and then when they add their pets, yeah, yeah, yeah. We were just talking before the episode, Sue kind of inherited one plus dogs, and uh because the college kids go off. I have a cousin that did the same thing, and he wants to take his dog home to school with him. And I think the parents are like, uh no, he's staying here. Yeah, yeah, we love him too much. So yeah, I couldn't part with mine either. But yeah, yeah, I mean, really, we were just kind of chit-chatting and thought, you know, let's just let's just give it to you straight. This is where we're at. We we are real people living crazy lives, and we all have a different picture of what that is, but um the the common, I mean you always say like everybody puts their pants on the same, you know, like whether you're a celebrity or you know, just a regular person, I think it the same goes for this. Like, I think what we find in common is that in some part of our lives, we've all all of us, most humans, have been on a weight loss journey. Yeah, you know, and I think that storyline um is more common than we think, but not talked about as much as we think. You know, and I think that's where I mean, when we did our research for this, like, is this even gonna be worth it, or are there gonna be 50 podcasts out there about weight loss? And there really isn't. There's not. Um, I was surprised. I was really surprised. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I I I I would love to get the reach out there even more because there are so many, you go on all these groups on social media and there are so many women struggling. Just like you know, everyday things, like like, you know, for me, like I said, when I was, oh my gosh, it's mint, I'm off my track of eating, and I gotta find a way to to get back to that.
SPEAKER_00Well, and maybe that that would be someone could turn our podcast on and refocus and be like, I don't need that candy bar or whatever, you know. Um, I'm you know, looking for that as well. Uh I mean for me, okay, like yes, I've had many a candy bar in my life, but I really love the bear bell crispy cream. Um, is it called creamy crisp? Something like that. I guess they couldn't say crispy cream, but um, it is like a candy bar. Now I can only eat like half because of the surgery, but um, I did that purposely today before spin class because I thought I'll probably pass out if I don't get my protein first. Yeah. So I had to really like plan that. And that's not easy for me. I'm not a planner at all. But um, I feel good. Like I feel good about doing that. I feel good about going to spin for the first time in a long time. Um, and you know, that it's almost like just find that replacement. And for you, it's that distraction of I don't have a snack, I wish there was a snack here. It's not like I'm driving to Piggly Wiggly to get it. Yeah. Do you go down there? No. You don't shop there? No. That'll be another time. Where do you grocery shop? Um, I mean, it's hard because we do want to reach a larger audience. And um, I think with Sue and I having traveled around with the Marine Corps, um, we had like Kroger.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Um, I think is like the Harris Teeter here. Yes. What else was that?
SPEAKER_01Albertson's Albertson's Safeway. I didn't have a safe way anywhere we lived. Yeah. Um in Fallbrook. No, no, no, Oceanside on 76. And um there's a safe way. So we lived in Fallbrook too. I can't even remember. There was Oceanside by Sprouts. Okay, I know where Sprouts is. So it was in the shopping plaza across the street at the Sprouts Safeway.
SPEAKER_00Well, and you have a piggly wiggly right here, and you don't go there. So I guess it just depends on what you like.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But um gosh, yeah. I remember Fallbrook, they had a peanut butter ranch pickle pizza. Oh my god. Like, I don't know where that was at anybody in California that might be listening. Tell me where that was. I can't remember. And that's another thing I struggle with too, is my freaking memory. I'm tired of it. Yeah, I have very fond memories of California, and there's little pockets like that. I can't remember like what the name of that pizza place was or what grocery store I went to.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It was funny because my youngest son today set up breakfast. He wanted to go back to Oceanside because he hasn't been there so long, just to like familiarize himself with it. Plus, he was younger when we moved.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So oh, Megan would love to go back. We went back to visit my sister because she had moved out there on one of Jim's deployments. Yeah. And then uh she stayed, met her husband online, and um yeah, so Megan got to go, even though she was born at Camp Pendleton. We left when she was like four-ish.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I mean she has good memories of her childhood, yeah, of even that far back. But um, she loved going back. I don't know if we went back once or twice, but she would definitely go again. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, they still call it their childhood home. I guess that you know, they spent most of their life there. Yeah. So uh yeah. Travis puts that he's from well, first he used to put that he was from Los Angeles. Oh, that's hilarious. His profile or his portfolio, but he did change it to Oceanside.
SPEAKER_00So I wonder if we do reach a larger audience, if when Travis gets big on Broadway, he'll like bring us in. Yeah. So I feel like I've my big dream has always been to be an actress. Yeah. And maybe he needs to know that. Yeah. Because I think we do a really good job. I think so. Yeah. I he might even just write parts for us. I think this, all right, Travis, if you're listening, we are ready for Broadway.
SPEAKER_01I gotta get patients.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, let's see. Let's see how many um reaches we get. Yeah. When you go into the insights, we're looking, we're looking to hit the hundreds people.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Just tune in. Yes. And keep tuning in because um our plan is just to bring you more real talk. Yeah, exactly. Any other struggles?
SPEAKER_01That's it. That's just the the the main struggle is like trying to get my meal back on track. Get your routine together. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, I you said it before um to get your structure or your kitchen structured. Like I knew what you meant by that. Like that really stuck with me. Um, and I think that's it. It's just that routine or structure, kind of redefining that, yeah, reapplying it to the changes in your schedule. You know, maybe you don't eat at 8, 12, and 4 or whatever that may be for you. Yeah, but just you know, figure out a way to adjust. Um, for me, it's we have no sit-down meals with the kids. Um, and I'm trying to get back to the the table.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Trying to um refocus and get the the weekly dinner in, which I think kind of turns out to be a Sunday for most people. Yes. So tonight would be the night that I'm gonna try to have family dinner and and have this, you know, kind of real talk at the table. Because I I think that's a huge foundation for families. Um, that especially when your kids are grown, even though they are still living with you, it's just like no one's ever home at the same time. Friday night, um, I couldn't wait for Jim. He was helping a friend. So I ate and then he came home and like stood at the counter and ate. I'm like, this is not what I had planned. I cleaned up the table, I was ready to like set the table. And he was like, he's like this. He goes, Oh, do you want me to move to the table? I'm like, I'll sit with you. But like we can't employ it, whatever. We can't get our kids to do it if we're not doing it. So we were kind of laughing about that Friday night. Like, here we are, we're both 53, and he and I are like still like learning, like. Still growing up.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Yes. And I'm I, you know, and you should try really hard. And I should try this really hard. It's like just the two of you to sit at the table and have a meal. Like our problem is, you know, 4, 4:30, I'll go down and I'll fix something. Like literally last week, we did not make a meal. Like we had leftovers from Sunday. We did chili and um what else? Burgers.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's a struggle too, is like because you we don't eat a lot. You know, our portions are so small. It it almost seems like overkill to like do this big meal. Yes. When when you know right away that you're packing half of it up for tomorrow. Like even at a restaurant, we'll just you know, just wrap that to go. And I think it that kind of gets in the way of the importance of sitting down together. Yep.
SPEAKER_01We'll get in front of the TV, we'll be like, oh, we got a minute, we got a little bit of time. Let's finish watching Survivor. Right. And we're in front of the TV watching Survivor. You know, because that's the by the time I go to bed at night, I can't watch anything.
SPEAKER_00I'm like, I fall asleep too. Sleep is another struggle. Oh my gosh. And like, yeah, I will. There's something about a car, a long car ride, and just sitting on the couch. I I'm unless I'm watching a wheel of fortune, I'm like zonked at five minutes and they all tease me about it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So let's do this, ladies. Let's let's just move forward. Tomorrow's a new day. And um, our next episode, I'll let you know how I've been doing with my meal planning.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I mean, I think that's important, you know, kind of go back to um where we left off, you know, a recap. Um, like all those Netflix shows, and which I canceled Netflix. That's another story. Yeah. Um, but yeah, let's reset, recharge. We're doing it together. Thanks for tuning in. We're here for you. And comment below your struggles. Let us know. Yeah. Yeah, we'll we're here for it. We'll look for those comments. And uh yeah, just thanks for being you and tuning in and uh looking forward to the next one. So then, wait there's more.
