Welcome to OG's Talk and Ball. This is Phyllis and Mary Lou back again for another session. Today we're gonna be talking about well, I think we're gonna first talk about college basketball and the how that winded up and what's happening now. And then uh we'll m both for men and women, yes. Yes. Then we'll move on to the WNBA, which is starting soon with their regular games. Right. And then current things for the NBA and what's going on. Oh, I like I like that. I like that schedule. We come up with good stuff, you know? Well it entertains us. It does, you know, and really, and if it's not entertaining to us, then you know that our heart, soul, mind, body, and spirit wouldn't be in these recordings and really how much we do enjoy them. Right. But but the season is winding down for well, it's gone now for college. Gone for college. Right, right. And winding down for the NBA. The playoffs are gonna be starting here real soon. Right. And I think we'll go to every other week or so. Something like that. So yes, just um, you know, listeners beware that you may not, if you get these automatically dropped on your um whatever uh format platform, excuse me, that you're using, you may not see us for a week at a time in between. But we will be, I think we've got a schedule now set up for every other week, and we're trying to keep things relevant and pertinent. Um, and we just don't want to take up airspace just for the benefit of talking, you know what I mean? Besides, Mary Lou, we have things to do, places to go. I know people to see. I know, definitely. It's springtime, and uh the weather, I hope it's nice by all of you because we've had a nice little patch of good weather here in the Pacific Northwest, and um it's time for golf, and Phyllis is traveling, and I'll be doing a GG. Oh, that's right. That's right, I do. A great grandma. My grandson had a baby last night. Well, his girlfriend did. That's right, but he thinks he did. Oh, okay. He thinks he worked at that. I'm sure he did. I'm sure the stress level hadn't been out the roof. But congratulations. Yes. Congratulations um to them on their new babies. Yes, absolutely, and my congrats as well. And I hope you get to see that baby um real soon and get your hands on her, definitely. Yes. Okay, so what do we have to say about you know what's an intriguing topic because I didn't really know much about it until we started looking at this was that whole idea of what the heck is a combine? You hear so much about the NBA having a combine for their new and upcoming players, and then actually this year through that collective bargaining agreement, the WNBA had already their first combine, and theirs was the third and fourth of April, I believe, which was kind of a messy time in our personal opinions. I think we both voiced that because what was happening at that time, folks. Well, they were having a championship games that same weekend. Yeah, and some of the same players had to play in the games and go to the combine. Combine, yeah, that's rough. That is rough and rugged. Um, yeah, because you would think, watch me play. Uh, you know, we're in the finals, you know, you what you see is what you get, you know, kind of thing. But um anyway, so that one's done, and we know that we've got the NBA um combine coming up soon. So what is the combine? Let's talk about what it is. Well, it it's an invitation only. There's a group of about 75 college and G League and other um prospective players for the NBA, some international players that all meet that age requirement, etc. Right. They have to be at least 19 that year who uh need to show off their skills. Yeah. And all the co that there are coaches and scouts and general managers who come and watch what's going on. That it involves very extensive uh different things. Physically. Physically they they get measured, they get they have their physical measurement, so it can't be a fake one, you know, like oh yeah, somebody says they're six foot one and they may be like five, ten and a half or something because they have their shoes on or whatever, you know. They the at the combine they're they are uh measured, their height is measured with shoes and without shoes. Oh, interesting. Interesting. Okay, cool. Yeah, they also measure wingspan, that's how wide their hands go. Right, right. You know, fingertip to fingertip, uh their weight, their standing reach, how how far they can reach up, and their body fat. Yeah. There's something we don't know. I know there's a full medical evaluation that takes place as well. I'm sure they want to check hearts and you know, and also their minds, you know, they have an extensive interview process. So they really, I'm sure the people that are running this thing um that are empowered by the NBA uh know questions to ask and any red flags, or if somebody might need some professional assistance that they would be available for them as well, you know, because the big transition as a that's a those are kids, you know what I mean? 18 and 19 years old, uh maybe 20, or there might probably some that are a little bit older than that. But you know, I again we talked about this before. We talk about our own lives at that point, and there's there's so many transitions going on and things that are happening uh to ourselves, and but this is a lot, you know, for somebody to absorb. Absorb, definitely. And then, you know, the coaches and the general managers, they they have um personal interviews, and that's where they find out something about the maturity of the player, also. I've heard them talk about that afterwards, that they did real well in their interview. There's also athletic testing, you know, sure, standing vertical leap, oh maximum vertical leap, you know, running jump, how far you can get up. Sure. Those skills are they are they those skills that they were born with, or are they skills that they've developed in their high school and college days? Uh you know, what is that all about? You know, you know, the other thing they do is the 40-yard dash, and I hear them talk about oh, at the combine, he was, you know, he did it in blah blah blah. X amount of seconds, yeah. Yeah, and they do, you know, three-quarter sprints and and shuttle runs and all kinds of things. And then there's the on court drills. Um, spot up shooting, off-the-dribble shooting, timed shooting, you know, how many seconds it takes, right, jump shots, wow, and then position-specific skill tests. That is intense. And five on five playing. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. So they are watched while they do all these different things. So not only on their individual skills, but how well they basically play with others, and maybe others that they don't know know at all. Right. Maybe have only played against, perhaps, or again, maybe they don't even know who these people are. Right. Because they could be from the other side of the country. Yeah. Yeah. You know, and are you a ball hog or are do you give up the ball when you should be shooting? Or yeah, how does that work? So we know that um the draft combine is happening in May. It happens what the 10th through the 17th. Yeah. Are those the dates that you have? Yeah. And prior to that is a G League Elite camp. So players from the G League are invited to have some time. Uh that's from the 8th until the 10th, uh, prior to the combine. So I think it's it's I love I loved looking this up because I really had no idea before what it was and why it was a big deal. Right. And you know, the um the G League Combine, uh sometimes players really stand out in that and then they get invited to the regular combine the the following day. Uh-huh. The following um week. Yeah. I mean the following day, actually. Exactly. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. So that's uh quite, quite um excellent in Chicago, too. I know. Most of the time, I don't know when it ever hasn't been. I don't remember in my recent memory anyway that it hasn't been in Chicago. But yeah, they do it all there um at uh the United if it's still called the United Center, um, where the Bulls play played, you know, years and played. More than one um I'm sure facility. Yeah. Uh-huh. They there's a lot of universities in that area too. I'm sure they spread them out. And um Yeah, wow. So basically the the Combine is the premier scouting event. Um, and this I didn't know too. If players are invited to this, they are required to go. Oh. Or have a a really good excuse. They have to have an excused absence. Like an appendectomy or something like that. I mean something that would really and that just happened to Joel and Bede. I'm sorry, we're sorry to hear that for the 76ers. But um, anyway, something like that would be definitely like okay, I can't not just because I have a runny nose or something. You know what I mean? Some of you, right? Right. An injury that prevents you from doing it. Because you have to participate in all of the areas. You cannot just there's no pass on any of them. No. No. So I guess that pretty much sums it up, Phyllis. That was really a nice uh little dip in that whole thing. Did you have anything else you want to talk about? Well, that's how you specifically you you raise you raise um your your price. If you do really well in the combine. I see I see negotiations, then you may be a higher draft pick. Right. Because I'm sure there's agents and people, their people and your people and all that involved. Right. And out of the 75, there there may be some surprises for some teams, and they say, Oh, we like that guy. Yeah, he would fit real well in our team. Right, right. You know, they may be a a second round pick, but they like him. So well, I'm hoping next year that we'll have more to talk about uh with the WNBA combine as well, because this year it kind of happened and I didn't know that it did, to be honest with you, until I read about it after the fact. So maybe we'll get more, we will we will be able to get more in depth about the WNBA and their inner workings as this season proceeds. So with that, uh let's move on to our next topic, which is drum roll, please, about what's going to be happening next with the WNBA and their season getting started. So go get a snack or do whatever, and we'll be right back. And we're back. So our second piece that we're doing today, our second segment, is uh going to talk a little bit more about what are the next what what next things to look forward to with the WNBA uh beyond that their season starts the first full week of May. I think their um preseason games are the third and the fourth of May, if I remember correctly. And then the opening tip-off will be May the 8th. Um, so that's coming right up in a couple weeks. So yeah, there are three games that first night. Yeah, it's a big big matchup, is the Las Vegas Aces against the Phoenix Mercury. Oh, that will be that will be a good one. Yeah, that will be a good one. Yeah, yeah. You know, that WNBA season is 44 games. Yes, it is. Starts May 8th. It does. And um, you know, Becky Hammond, I always like watching her coach and her interaction with her team with those aces, and she does doesn't put up with anybody's funny business. She is just so all business, you know. We're getting this job done today, ladies. Um, so let's move forward with that. So um we've talked a little bit about the collective bargaining agreement for the WNBA and the increase in salary and um how that is going to significantly significantly impact um the uh players over this next seven-year period. This CBA is a seven-year agreement that they signed as far as salaries are concerned, and raising that salary cap to seven million dollars. That's a big bucks for anybody. Yeah, you know. I mean, seriously. So um just recently, too, last week, Angel Reese was moved or traded uh from the Chicago Sky, and that got a lot of attention because she was pretty um overt, I guess would be the word, um in an interview about her dislikes and criticisms of uh the people that were running that team and she did that publicly. So of course there's Chicago's wishing her the best on her next team, which is the Atlanta Dream. But I think people listening, like me, are putting the pieces of the puzzle together, like, yeah, I don't know, she shouldn't have said anything and just played her dang game, you know what I mean? But um it didn't work that way for her. So um, you have anything else that you're thinking about, Phyllis, about what to look forward to? Well, there there this year there are significant coaching changes, including two more uh two more teams this year. Yes, yes, uh Toronto Tempo and the Portland Fire. Uh-huh. And then uh Dallas, Seattle, and New York all change coaches. Right, right. And uh and the New York coach went to the tempo, correct? Yes, yeah, yeah. Yes, yeah. Um some of the new coaches have uh NBA experience. Uh-huh. Um but this season it is a rare thing happened in the league. There are no black women coaches. Oh, interesting. Yeah. There is uh the first East Indian coach. Oh, okay. Yeah, she um she is with Seattle. Okay, she's gonna uh her name is Sonia Raman. She was formerly an assistant in in the with the New York Liberty spent four years as an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies, too. Oh my! Oh she's got quite a background in the middle of the year. Yeah, so she'll be with the Seattle Storm this year. Okay, and of course the New York Liberty hired Christopher DiMarco and he was with uh Golden State. He's the coach, he was the uh an assistant, an assistant with uh Golden State for 13 years. Wow, wow, interesting, yeah, interesting. And then of course we liked the uh Sandy Brondello, who was who was the coach for the Liberty, and now she's gonna start with a brand new team, the the Toronto Tempo, and because she had four years with the Liberty and did really well, and I was surprised they let her go. I I am there's you know, there's always more to it than meets the eye, you know what I mean? Somebody sees something that we either don't or that you know is something more important to their management. I mean, it's just very difficult. And I always have to try to get my feelings out of the way when it comes to these. I would never make a big head honcho in a corporation or an entity like the NBA or the WNBA, no way, Jose. People oriented. Well, you know, it's already it's already hard enough when we're fans of the Blazers and they end up trading guys that we kind of liked, you know what I mean? Or really liked. Yeah, or really liked, and I know that's gonna happen again this coming year because there's a new owner for that team, and I don't want to go down that rabbit hole right now. But with the um W, there's the draft is coming up on Monday, and we know that the tempo is holds four picks, and they're picking number six, number twenty two, twenty-six, and thirty-six. So they'll the Monday before this drops, right? It'll be to two days prior. So it's coming up. It's already it will be. It will already be passed by the time they listen. So anyway, but we know that there's going to be some um shifting of personnel all around. Exactly. And a lot of scuttle butt at this point in time after um the NBA or the excuse me, the um NCAA finals, um, with UCLA winning, and of course, you know, Yukon and Texas and uh South Carolina, a lot of great players in that final four, you know, that really were able to show their stuff. Shined. Shined. So we can imagine that those players will be going in the top ten for sure. I would imagine. I mean, I would not bet on it per se, but I would imagine that those players are going to be highly sought after. And, you know, again, we talked about this. The women have to be 22 or turn 22 that year. So you're getting kind of a whole I mean, obviously there's a whole difference between men and women, I know that part, but as far as the maturity levels, perhaps, and their playing abilities, they've just had that much more time to kind of refine their craft before they take it to the big league, so to speak.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00So anyway, what else you got on that? Well, uh you know, I there are two more coaches I didn't talk about yet. Jose Fernandez joined the Dallas Wings as a head coach. Okay. Um, you know, the Dallas Wings, didn't they have their worst record last season? Yeah, they're gonna pick first this year. Yeah, and they think that they'll be adding some the projection is that they're going to take Olivia Miles, who's a guard from TCU, as their number one pick. That that's an area that they need help with. So Okay, well, we'll see what happens. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. But he you know, he's an interesting guy. He spent 25 years coaching women's basketball team at the University of South Florida and developed a very uh successful program there. Yeah. But but this is his first um kind of a big league thing, professional one, you know, other than college. But and then there's then there's the Portland Fire coach. Alex Sarah Mott. Uh-huh. He was an assistant at the Cleveland Cavaliers. And he has a variety of coaching experience, including a remix, um Rip City remix. He was an assistant coach there. Oh, an assistant, interesting. Well, his philosophy was very different. Yeah. He I'm it's gonna be interesting to see how this role. I'm just more than curious about this because it's a whole player-oriented decision-making kind of thing. And I'm like, okay dokie, let's see how this goes. He he has a whole new training system, it's called Constraints Led Approach. Uh-huh. And it's popular in basketball and soccer in Europe. Okay. And it's starting to gain popularity in the NBA Wemby was trained with that. Okay. So, yeah, I mean, I I'm not saying anything negative about it. I just don't know anything about it. So it'll be interesting to see um how that all unfolds. Yeah, so uh rather than pattern drills in practice, they use a system that emphasizes adaptability, improvisation, and quick decision making, and um forces players to make decisions under pressure. Ooh. You know, so they'll give them a drill, for instance, that you you can't hold the ball for more than two seconds. Oh my. Okay. You know, so you have to like hot potato, you know. Remember, as kids played that game. Yeah, so you have to be pay you you have to make good decisions and you have to make them instantly. So uh we'll see what happens. Yeah, that's all we can do. It'll be interesting. It'll be interesting. Exciting. Those are some great, great things about uh the projections and what's going to be happening next and what's going on in the WNBA. I did have a couple of fun facts that there are, I think, five or six uh brother-sister combinations of players that are both in the NBA and the WNBA, and um Angel Reese, who we mentioned earlier, and her brother actually's name is Julian, and he's an NBA player as well. Megan and TJ McConnell, and Megan's with the Mercury, and TJ is um with um the Indiana Pacers, and Naya and Amir Coffee, and we're talking about Atlanta Dream and Phoenix Sons, and now they're both in Phoenix playing. Oh no, excuse me, that's the wrong pair. It's Elizabeth and Mark Williams, brother and sister, who are both playing in Phoenix. That'd be kind of cool as the parents. I guess you'd get like a long-term rental somewhere in Phoenix to hang out while your kids are playing ball there, or maybe just buy a property there, because I'm sure the kids might have a couple of bucks to spare. And uh Ryan and Ileana Rupaire, and uh Ryan was with the Blazers, and now he's with the Grizzlies. Um, and Ileana was with the Aces, and now she's played with the Valkyries. And coming up, this is the one I'm really excited about is Gabriela. Haquez is going to be probably in the top 10 picks of the um WNBA draft. And it looks like maybe the fever have their eyes on her, and she was an excellent forward, as is her brother Jaime, who plays for the Heat. So those are my fun facts to end the program today. Okay, so in a little bit we'll move on to the NBA. Yes, we will. And oh my goodness. Okay, moving targets. All right, see you in a few. Bye. So, Mary Lou, what's happening in the NBA here? Oh my goodness. It's it's a huge moving target right now, Phyllis. I think I've used that word before, maybe too often. But anyway, lots of things going on, lots of balls in the air. And um, we know that the play-in tournament will be starting soon. And that's the play-in started yesterday. Yesterday, actually, yeah, you're right. From from uh our dis our drop dates. But um, yeah, and uh Amazon Prime has the exclusive broadcast rights to those play-in games. So if you've got a team on that, if you don't have Prime, you're not gonna be watching them. You'll hear the um replays or hear about the replays at a later point in time. But yeah, that goes on from the 14th to the 17th. Yes. Okay, the play-in tournaments, and then so let's explain one more time because you did that a couple weeks ago. But how does that play-in work? No matter if you're in the Western Conference or Eastern Conference, it's the same rule. Right, but they're two different ones because it happens in each conference. Right. So the the teams with the best winning level number, record, they call that record, the first the top six are automatically in the playoffs. Right. Then there's this thing called the play-ins for the seventh and eighth spot. Right. So right now they'll be Because previously it was just the top, excuse me for interrupting the top eight teams, right. So now they give those other teams that have maybe been flirting with being in seventh or eighth place the opportunity to actually be one of those teams. Right. Okay. So nine team nine, nine in the nine and ten record spot also get to compete. So it's the seven and eight team that they play each other the first game. Okay. Whoever wins that game is in the seventh spot. Done deal. That's it. One and done. One game. One and done. Okay. Then one of them will lose. Right. That's what happens when two teams play. I know. Unfortunately. Sometimes when I watch NBA games, I want both of them to do. I get it. I never want both to win. I know. But I do want one to I would want both to lose sometimes. Oh my god. So then there's the ninth and tenth team, and they play a game. And whoever loses that is out. One and done. Right. The winner play of the 9-10 plays the loser of the 7-8. Ooh. Okay. So that'll be that'll be in like two days, like the 17th. Right. And whoever wins that game wins the number eight spot. And you know what they get to do then? They get to play the number one team. And the number two team. So depending, right? So the first place team plays number eight team and the second place team. So in the Western Conference, to give you an example of that, you would either, as the eighth place team, probably play OKC, because they're number one. And if you're the seventh place team, you get to play the Spurs. Right. Holy moly. Both of those teams are firepower. And then on the east, you would play either the Celtics or the excuse me, the Pistons are the number one. Yeah. And Celtics number two. Right now. Right now. So that could change in the next couple days. But anyway, yeah, sign me up. Not. You know what I mean? It's like look what you win. We know, we know that weird and strange things can happen. And I not wishing injury on anyone, but somebody gets sick or an oui or something happens, and that could certainly change a team's trajectory. Right. Because the playoffs. Yeah. But the play the play-ins are one or two games. The playoffs are seven game series. Yeah, best of seven. Yeah. Whoever whoever wins the first, whoever wins four games is going to move on to the second round. Right. But you know, the Yeah. And those first uh six teams then have like five, six, seven days of rest in between things, too. Whereas these other teams are backing and playing the players. So okay, thank you, Phyllis. That that helps because you know, people I know hear this, and even if they're not uh rabid basketball fans like you and I, it still is a little confusing sometimes about okay, why are they doing this and what exactly is the goal? You know, so now we now we got it. So we need those top eight teams, and then what happens to everybody else? There will they get to be the first teams in the lottery, yeah, top five teams, yeah. And then they get to pick a ball or something, right? They get their number chosen, and that's um in May sometime that they ha they meet for that. And then the lottery itself is in June, that they know what position they're going into. Oh that yeah, but the the the first four um lottery picks are soon. It's in May. It's in May. It's like the third week of May. Uh maybe right after the combine. I didn't get that date, but I apologize ahead of time for our listeners, but I know it's in May sometime that they know ahead way ahead of um uh the lottery itself. Yeah, yeah, it's about a month ahead. Yeah. Who the first four picks who gets the first four picks. Exactly. Right, exactly. And it uh we could explain that again sometime because I I know maybe again in June we'll do it. I now understand it better. Okay, all right, yeah, but yeah, no, that's it. We'll put that on our list for June. The NBA is considering some significant lottery reforms to crack down on the uh tanking. You know, I'm just you know me. I hate that. I do, I don't use the word hate too often, but I do hate that whole concept because you know, we have said this before in our podcast. You know, these kids that come from college were win-win-win-win. I mean, you know, everybody wanted to be the in that final four or be the conference champions or be the NCAA title holders at the end of all of that, and then you go to a team that is one of the lower-ranked teams, and you find out, oh yeah, we're gonna be tanking again this year because we want to have a better lottery or a draft position. It's like that could be I would think that'd be so deflating. Yeah, sign me up for therapy, I wouldn't need it big time. Yeah, uh, I'll I'll just explain that tanking is a deliberate um choice to lose by the team management or coach or whoever to lose games, and they do it by sitting their best players. So the player might play for three periods or three quarters, I should say, and then they sit them out the fourth quarter and watch the team lose a ten-point lead or something. Yeah frustrating. That's one way of doing it. Frustrating or they just they put their best players on the injury list because everybody has aches and pains at the end. And uh the the league is fining um teams for doing that, you know, faking injuries. They they're not severe enough to really sit. Uh uh, but it's a very complicated thing figuring out how to change that. Yes, you know, and the board of governors for the NBA is going to um be talking about that like on May 28th. They put out three different proposals, and I know listening to talk radio about basketball, there's one that everyone is more keen on, but I don't even want to get into it until we know what they ultimately decide. So again, I think we could put that as an item um of a you know, one of our segments in June that we can talk about those things a little bit more depth. There really is going to be some reform. Yeah, there's a decision made on the other end of the scale, there's a big race for rookie of the year right now. Oh, yeah, yeah. You know, two two uh two uh Duke dudes. Yeah, both both players from Duke are are right now tied for who's the best. Yeah, yeah, that would be Con Kanipple. Who we have been talking we've talked about him earlier on. Phyllis was one of her faves. From Charlotte, yeah, and Cooper Flag of Dallas. Yeah you know that uh you know VJ Edgecombe from Philadelphia, yeah, he would have won in another year. Sure. You know, but this year he has so much competition, but he is he has a strong number three. Right, right, definitely so good. And I would not be surprised if we have a tie and it's co-MVPs, rookie of the year, because you may not MV. Well, you know it it's to me it almost seems like it should be. Exactly, exactly because they're both have been strong throughout the year, and anyway, yeah, it's it's oh I don't want to again, I don't like making those decisions because my I get too much of my heart involved in it, and that's not the best thing. They're just young kids. They are they are don't want to hurt anybody's feelings. So, you know, the good the good news for regular TV watchers too is that the final games, the first and second rounds, um, are all um going to be also on ESPN and then on NBC Peacock and then some are gonna also be on Amazon. So there's a little bit more of an opportunity to watch games if you're interested. Yeah. So after the finals, then we don't wait until fall for something else to happen. There's stuff that will be happening in the summer, like the 2K NBA, 2K Summer League. Yeah, the summer league is in July, it lasts about eleven days. Uh-huh. Every team takes every team uh is competing in that. Um and you know it showcases that's the one in Vegas, yeah. And there's a couple that happen in places ahead of that. Yeah, Utah and California. Right. But um, you know, it really shows um the rookies and sophomores and G League players that um sometimes they just excel there and then they get picked up. Yeah. Well, another topic that I want to put on the calendar for either um July or or June or July is to talk about the Nay Smith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2026, the players and the coaches, ref, and team that have been nominated for that. So we'll hold that for another time. And I think we better call it quits for today. Okay, because I don't want people to unplug us totally. We'll we'll unplug for you. So, with that, I'm going to tell you that I believe life is better with basketball. And thank you, cousin Carol, for the dish kitchen towel that says that on the towel. She's been listening. Okay. Well, this G G, yes, and this OG G G G say that ten times fast. This great grandma and OG is gonna say, be kind to each other out there. Amen. Amen. See you next time, or talk to you next time. Bye.
