If AI Feels Overrated, Are Your Prompts Too Vague?

If AI has ever made you think, “That’s it?”, the problem usually isn’t the tool. It’s the briefing. We talk through the single habit that separates people who get incredible results from AI from those who write it off as overrated: clear, directed prompting that gives the model something real to work with.
We keep it practical with a simple formula you can use immediately across ChatGPT, email marketing drafts, content creation, and day-to-day operations: give the AI a role, give it context, and give it an example. We explain why “write me an email” produces generic fluff, while a tight brief about your audience, your offer, and a past email that performed well creates output that actually sounds like you. No complex prompt engineering jargon required, just better communication.
Then we get into the part most people skip: iteration. The best results come from treating AI like a conversation, not a one-and-done request. We share how to push back, refine, and steer the draft until it fits your goal, plus the mindset that keeps everything grounded: garbage in, garbage out. That rule still runs the show, even with smarter models.

Why AI Feels Overrated
SPEAKER_00What's happening everyone? Jason right here. Sarah's with me today, and I want to kick things off with what I think is the single biggest difference between people who get incredible results from AI and people who think it's overrated.
SPEAKER_01I feel like I already know where you're going with this.
Prompting Changes Everything
SPEAKER_00You probably do at this point.
SPEAKER_01Prompting.
SPEAKER_00Prompting. The way you talk to these tools matters a lot more than most people realize.
SPEAKER_01I feel like a lot of people expect AI to just read their mind, and then when it doesn't deliver, they write the whole thing off.
SPEAKER_00That's exactly it. Think about it this way: if you brought on a new employee and gave them no context, no direction, and no example of what you wanted, and they handed you something terrible, you wouldn't blame them. You'd blame the instruction. It's the same with AI.
Role Context Example Framework
SPEAKER_01So what does better prompting actually look like day to day?
SPEAKER_00Three things make an immediate difference. Give it a role, give it context, and give it an example. Instead of saying write me an email about my services, you should say you're writing to service-based entrepreneurs who are tired of inconsistent lead flow. My business does X. Here's a previous email that worked well. Write something in this direction.
SPEAKER_01That's a completely different starting point.
Iterate Like A Conversation
SPEAKER_00The output is night and day. You don't have to memorize frameworks or be some kind of tech person to do this. Just think about it the way you'd brief a human. What do they need to know to do this well?
SPEAKER_01I'd also say people don't give the back and forth enough credit. One prompt and done isn't really how this works.
SPEAKER_00Really good point. The best work comes from treating it like a conversation. You get a first draft, you tell it what's off, you push back on it, you refine it. People give up after one attempt and decide AI can't do it, when the issue is they didn't push through the process.
SPEAKER_01So the real skill is knowing how to direct it, not just how to ask it something.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. And here's the thing I tell people all the time the quality of your output is a direct reflection of the quality of your input. Garbage in, garbage out. That hasn't changed just because the tool got smarter.
SPEAKER_01That's actually a really easy way to remember it.
Garbage In Garbage Out
SPEAKER_0030 minutes learning how to prompt well will get you better results than years of sending half-baked requests. It's one of the highest ROI skills available to any business owner right now.
